THE HAPPIEST CITY ON EARTH
Saturday morning at DreamVille: the People of Tomorrow slowly but surely wake up to the sounds of tent zippers and yawning neighbours, and crawl out into the brilliant sunlight, so badly needed after yet another chilly night. It felt like a dream last night to see the Mainstage in full force, but now it’s time to rinse off all the glitters and confetti. Don’t want to wait in line? Just hop underneath one of the outdoor showers, which are shaped like beautiful flower bouquets. At the Marketplace, you can fuel up again with fresh coffee, donuts or even a half grilled chicken if you are hungover hungry. Make sure to take it easy in the morning, though, and to get some well-deserved rest before the gates to our promised land open up once more. All of us know, after all, that DreamVille is more than worth spending some time on – just take look at some of these faces and tell us it isn’t the happiest city on Earth!
“I’m up for a tough challenge today,” Giorvio from The Netherlands admits, waiting in line for his black rocket fuel. “Last night we blasted hardstyle through our speakers until 4 a.m.”
This girl from Hungary is seeing the world upside down after being blown away by Eric Prydz’ HOLO set yesterday. “My name is Timea, like Timmy Trumpet! Today I’m going to see him.”

Between all the pre-coffee zombies at the Marketplace sits Nicolai, looking remarkably fresh. “This is my fifth edition, and my secret is magnesium.” Gotta balance those electrolytes!

WISDOM READY, SET, CURATE!
Imagine this: you build your own ultimate Tomorrowland setlist, One World Radio plays it for five entire months, and you win a meet & greet with Martin Garrix to learn how he creates his own tracklists! This became a possibility at LEAF by JBL, in their competition which was won by Kim from Germany. Should you still want to try your hand at playlist curation, one of Martin’s greatest tips is to see your playlist as a soundtrack to your life. And in order to create the perfect place to dance to these soundtracks, JBL is again hosting their own stage at Tomorrowland. Floating in one of the ponds around the site, it has an enchanting, bohemian vibe to it: bright, colourful and airy. It is also where we find Patrick from the United States and Annie from Germany. Of course, we had to ask which track is the absolute highlight of the soundtrack to their (love) life. “Ok, here it comes,” Patrick says. “Don’t laugh, but it’s actually a Martin Garrix song.” Annie adds: “That’s true! Martin Garrix played ‘Animals’ at Coachella a couple of years ago. It was our first festival together and that’s how we found out we have the same music taste. That’s really a love language to us!”
A HEALTHY START TO DAY ONE Surrounded by colourful fields full of tents, Alpro hosts the breakfast bar at DreamVille. At this bar, there’s smoothies and bowls rather than cocktails and bites. The iced coffees, cups with pink smoothies and breakfast bowls are a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds… and moreover, they’ll help you rise and shine before another long day at the festival. This is just the start of the day John (25) needed after the Gathering. “I’m so happy we booked this in advance. I sure needed this amazing cappuccino and my breakfast bowl is so tasty with all the ingredients.” He and his friend Nadia have found themselves a nice table at the food area, where they enjoy their first meal of the day. John was already familiar with Alpro, since he first tried it in his home country of Switzerland. “I can’t taste the difference at all, so in that case I’d always choose dairy-free products.”
LIGHT THAT CONNECTION The Reflection of Love is all about making connections and The Hill FTX has partnered with Tomorrowland to test these bonds to extremes. Located close to the Freedom Stage, they’ve created a threedimensional continuum where the People of Tomorrow can examine their connection by laying their hand on a totem. Placed next to each other, the two totems will give you all the answers you are looking for: is the connection between the both of you strong enough to light up the room? If it is, you will have a chance to win exciting prizes, ranging from a Tomorrowland NFT to an official TML NFT t-shirt to tickets for a secret stage. Lina and Yamil from Colombia came across the continuum and took a chance. “Well, we took a shot at love – so we might as well take a shot at winning something with it too,” Lina says. “And we’re definitely the types that like to light up the room!” And the couple was right, as they won bracelets to join a secret gig. ¡Diviértete, Yamil and Lina!

LOVE UP IN THE AIR At the Amare Ferris wheel you can get a bird’s eye view of Tomorrowland from the highest point in the attraction, named after everyone’s favorite Brussels Airlines aeroplane. But that’s not the only high we reached here. This edition of Tomorrowland is all about the Reflection of Love, and that’s exactly what we found! Jessie, Danny Louis, Bryan and Diede were in line when we approached them. Their colorful outfits and good energy immediately stood out. “We have this glow on, because it’s Jessie’s and my honeymoon,” Danny Louis says, wearing the Australian flag around this shoulders. “We got married two weeks ago. We first went to Paris, second stop: Tomorrowland!” Jessie adds: “It’s actually really funny. It’s been 4 years since we met, and we both always had the wish to come here. We bought tickets for the 2020 edition, but that of course didn’t happen. Since we could use the tickets this year, we wanted it to be part of our little love trip.” Once in the Ferris wheel, Diede and Bryan also share the introduction to their story. “We’ve been together for nine months. This trip is super special for us too, since our anniversary was during the Gathering. We came here to celebrate the love for each other – with all of the People of Tomorrow here,” Bryan tells us. Of course we’re dying to know how these two beautiful couples met. “It’s actually not that hard to make new friends here,” Diede giggles. “It’s hilarious – we only THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
just met. We were checking out each other’s outfits and were like: hey, you guys look great!” Bryan adds: “At the time, the 2019 aftermovie triggered us to come here. That’s why at this moment, we’re creating our own small film of our experiences. We never expected everyone to be this nice, positive and energetic. Wherever you go, everyone is hugging and holding hands – I never experienced this before. It’s a true Reflection of Love. And this new friendship proves it.” “Beautifully spoken words,” Jessie says. “It’s a reflection in so many ways – a reflection of love, but the festival also inspires people to reflect on themselves. And isn’t that what love is about, too?” Danny Louis smiles at his newlywed husband: “Let’s make every moment here count, honey!” Also want to take a magical ride yourself, perhaps with the love of your life, too? The Amare Ferris wheel is located right behind the Freedom stage – but then again, you can’t really miss it from wherever you are on the Holy Grounds. And the best thing? Tickets are free!

SELF-CARE IS THE KEY TO LONGEVITY It’s an interesting time for Nicky Romero. His label Protocol Recordings is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in October. His touring schedule has been picking up pace after the pandemic, and he’s happy to be back at festivals like Tomorrowland. But if it’s up to him, he won't be going back to the prepandemic madness. “I don’t think anybody wants to return to that pace anymore. Surely, there’s a new generation ready to give it 120 percent. But they will also find out that going this hard is not a sustainable approach.”

TOMORROWLAND TODAY
BELGIUM 2022
“I’m in third or fourth gear now, and I don’t know if I ever want to shift back into fifth again.”
After three years, you’re finally returning to Tomorrowland. How does it feel to be back? Nicky: “Tomorrowland has always been very special to me. I like to describe it as the Disneyland of the music industry. It’s hard to compare festivals with one another, since every festival has its own atmosphere. But with Tomorrowland it’s even harder, because this is such a unique event. TML is one of the most remarkable festival experiences you can have – both as a visitor and as an artist.” The pandemic was a trying period for people all over the world. For artists, the wait was even more agonizing, being out of a job too. How did you survive that period? “I got a lot of energy from watching other people’s livesets. I also watched many of my own livesets, to see how I could improve my performance and sound. It was really tough to make club music during the pandemic, because part of the creation process is to be in touch with the dancefloor feeling. But watching livesets is what kept the fire burning for me.” Who were you inspired by most in the past few months? “This industry is so dynamic; things are constantly changing. What I’ve been really digging lately is the return of a sound I’ve always loved. Tech house is booming at the moment and getting a lot of mainstage traction. If you look at a guy like James Hype, he’s doing extremely well. It’s great he can do his tech house thing on mainstages now. I love how electronic music goes in cycles. Something people tend to forget is that tech house is the sound I started out with. I’ve also released on Toolroom Recordings. It’s great for me to see this sound taking the limelight again.” “I love how electronic music keeps going in waves of about five years. It’s what has happened before with Dutch house, progressive, slap house. Tech house is now at its peak, but it will inevitably be followed up by a new hype. I’m happy that our industry constantly keeps changing, it’s what keeps things fresh.” Your label Protocol Recordings will celebrate its 10-year anniversary at ADE. What’s going to happen? “As has become a tradition, we’ll have our yearly Protocol ADE party again. Over the years, we’ve had several venues as our home base: most years that was Melkweg, but we’ve also done parties at Escape and Jimmy Woo. We have an exciting new venue in store for this year, but we can’t reveal the exact location yet. We will also be releasing a special vinyl record, containing some of the greatest highlights of a decade of Protocol.”
Would you say the pandemic has changed people’s attitude towards the madness of touring? “I don’t think the break has been bad for anybody. After several years of reflection, I think everyone will agree that it was a bit too much. We had all stepped on a train that just kept on accelerating, without anyone knowing where the hell it was going to end. When that train came to a full stop, I think we were all confronted with the sheer madness of it all. I don’t think anybody wants to return to that pace anymore. Surely there will be a new generation ready to give it 120 percent. But they will also find out that this is not a sustainable approach. I wish for everyone to have a mental coach in their career. It definitely has done a lot of good for me.”
What are the highlights of those ten years? “There are many. We initially founded the label because we wanted independence from the major labels. We wanted the freedom to set out our own course, write our own story. It has been quite a ride, even with artists like Calvin Harris releasing on the label. Another highlight for me has been our sublabel Protocol Lab, which has proven to be a great breeding ground for new talent. It all started off with a demo drop, where my A&R manager Jorik van de Pol and me would give producers feedback. We received such great music, we decided we had to start a sublabel. I see Protocol Lab as the more accessible stepping stone to Protocol. The sound is also a bit more techy. It’s a great label for young producers to release their first club bangers.”
What’s the most important lesson that you’ve learned from your mental coach? “A mental coach doesn’t offer just one lesson, or one solution. The point is that they continuously guide you on your journey. The coach of a football team doesn’t just look at one player at a time, either. They need to make sure all the players of the team are working together in harmony.” Many starting DJ/producers aspire to be in your position one day. What’s the best advice you can give them? “Be sure to discover your own identity. Don’t follow the flock like a sheep, because you will never stand out. Seek out your own identity and set out your own course, and you will start building your own following from there.”
You’re known to be a real food fanatic. If you had to choose one city where you would have to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be? “I would have to say New York City. I mean, you have the best cuisine there from all over the world. I’m also a big fan of French cuisine, so I guess Paris would have to be my number two favourite town. And number three is definitely Tokyo. The food you can eat there is definitely in a league of its own.” Word has it that you’re also a big BBQ fan. Have you whipped out your tools this year and fired up the BBQ yet? “I haven’t had a lot of chances yet this year. I’m hoping for good BBQ weather in August, when I’ll be at home in the Netherlands because of Dance Valley.”
“I love how electronic music keeps going in waves of about five years.”
THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
With festivals in full swing again this year, how do you go from first to fifth gear? “You can’t shift from first to fifth: the motor will stop running. It’s the same with people. You need to warm up before you pick up speed. Thankfully, the scene as a whole is still warming up. There’s no chance to be touring in fifth gear at the moment, because every country has different COVID rules. In some places, you need a specific vaccination or booster. In others, you need to quarantine for one or two weeks. So it’s still impossible to be going at the same pace as in 2019. To stick to the metaphor, I’d say I’m in third or fourth gear at the moment, and I’m wondering if I ever want to shift back to fifth gear again.”

You’re a man with a clear-cut vision on food, cooking and eating. How would you describe your cooking style? “I like to describe my cooking style as avant-garde, but with inspirations from all over the world. I have travelled a lot and I’ve fallen in love with a lot of foreign dishes. But I would never copy a recipe one to one, that’s just not my style. I’d rather translate flavours to the kitchen I’m most comfortable with: the Belgian/French cuisine. Guided by my passionate affinity for regional, ecological products, my cuisine has a taste pattern based on freshness, newness, frivolity and transparency. I always cook with seasonal ingredients, and whenever possible, according to traditional methods.” So what are your thoughts on the question of local food versus global production? Bart smiles. “I always say: go local if possible, but with global flavours for the best taste!” Pastorale was voted best vegetable restaurant of 2018. How come? “Vegetables have always been important to me and my style of cooking. I’m not vegan, but a flexitarian – I still eat a good piece of meat about once a week. But on the days I don’t, I don’t miss it at all, and that is what I wanted to translate into my dishes. After winning this prestigious title in 2018, opening an entirely plant-based restaurant was easy. I call it plant-based, by the way, not vegan; that often has a negative connotation.” Why do you feel that way? “Well, a lot of people identify vegan food with meat replacements that are packed with artificial additives, like fake crab, for instance. I would never cook with that, as I have a strong preference for whole, pure foods.”
VEGAN VS. PLANT-BASED Vegan diets eliminate all animal products, while plant-based diets do not necessarily eliminate animal products, but focus on eating mostly plants, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains.

You have also opened WILDn en PLANTn, a fully plant-based restaurant. We can imagine that being a big step? “Actually, no. I mean, yes – opening a restaurant is always a big step, but the choice for a fully plantbased menu was relatively easy. At WILDn en PLANTn, we just use wild herbs taken from nature and plants. Cooking with plants gave me a new alphabet, you could say. Another motivation for me is that a growing group of people are interested in eating more vegetables. With this restaurant, I want to give them a platform. A place where they can be surprised at what plants have to offer. And vegetables can offer you a range of new flavours, as we use techniques like fermenting, drying, grilling and simmering. Our signature dish is the roasted cauliflower, inspired by small street food stands in Tel Aviv.”
"I EAT, SLEEP AND BREATHE VEGETABLES, AND I WOULD L I K E OT H E R S TO H AV E T H AT CHANCE TOO."
Besides taste, choosing to go plant-based can also have ethical reasons. What are your thoughts on that? “Shifting to more plant-based foods is essential to combatting climate change, soil, air and water pollution, ocean dead zones, and myriad other problems. If we decide to eat fewer meals with meat each week, we can have a huge impact on our collective health and the health of the planet. I firmly believe that chefs can show people that you don’t need any animal protein in order to have a good meal. Having said that, it should not be forced upon people. We just need to give them their own new alphabet. And if that makes them shift to eating vegetarian maybe once or twice a week, at first, then that’s already a great step forward.” I can imagine you getting a lot of compliments on the magic you create in your kitchen. Can you share a good anecdote you heard this week? “It’s tough picking one”, Bart says. “But I’ll give it a try: I met this lady who asked if the flatbread with veggies was vegan. It wasn’t, so I had to make some alterations for it to fit into her diet. It made her so happy. She replied to me by saying that she had been in Belgium for two days, and this was her first fully vegan meal – she was ecstatic. And that is why I do what I do: I want to make people happy with food.” For the readers that would like to try to eat less meat at home: what’s the easiest traditional dish to cook without meat? “Oh, that is definitely chili con carne. Or it’s chili sin carne then, actually. Beans have the lead in this meal and there’s so much you can do with tomatoes, herbs and spices. The best thing is it’s fully foolproof. Everybody can make this and you will not miss the meat.”
You have plans to start a food forest as well. Can you tell us more about that? “I’m delighted to! At home, I’m actively growing my own corn and I enjoy every single moment of it. I eat, sleep and breathe vegetables, and I would like others to have that chance too. I even want to give a piece of this energy back to the world. That’s why I’ve opened a call named ‘Land Looking for Farmer’, in which 12 acres of farmland are made accessible to people with innovative projects. The call attracted a lot of creative minds, and we’re currently bringing 15 of those proposals together to see how we can blend them. The proposals vary from keeping bees, chickens and herds of sheep to projects on the development side. People even donated more land, so the 12 acres have now become a hundred! A hundred acres for a fully plant-based project with food, offices, gardens. Can you imagine? What we’re ultimately trying to achieve is to create a wider platform to inspire individuals to make more green choices.
LOOKING FOR FARMERS Do you have green fingers, a passion for permaculture and are you interested in engaging in this project? Then the ‘Land Looking for Farmer' project may be just right for you. You can still submit your idea via grondzoektboer.be.

UNDER PRESSURE?
FIND THE WC DJ RENÉE OPSEDEE
“My rules are simple: strictly no sex in the booth.”
Roaming the grounds of Tomorrowland is one big adventure of discovery. It’s the combination of the grand and the obscure that makes this weekend so special. Tucked deep inside one of the tunnels to the Mainstage – right where the restrooms are, actually – is where you’ll find one very special dance floor. Behind the decks is a man who has dedicated his entire life to DJ’ing in toilets. Renée Opsedee aka the WC DJ started his career playing Belgium’s bigger clubs, including the world-famous FUSE club in Brussels, but feels much better at home in the place we all go every now and then to release the pressure. It’s a place where old-fashioned interaction between the dancers still exists and Renee wouldn’t have his career any other way. Welcome to the fascinating world of one of the most engaging DJs in the industry. “I started DJing in toilets out of discontent with my friends’ music tastes. All that bang, bang, bang techno they play every day, I just got fed up with it,” says Renée. Tomorrowland’s official WC DJ is a real rebel, but a lovely one. Whenever the main DJs play slow music, he’ll play something fast like ska, the uptempo sun-drenched style from Jamaica. But obviously, it’s the other way around most of the time. “Of course, mainstage DJs usually play fast stuff and then I play it slow. I love slowing down songs that are meant to be played at 130 BPM to 100 BPM. Now that is a whole different experience. It makes trumpets sound really dreamy, for example.” Call it a surprise effect, but people generally get really excited when they see a DJ play in the restrooms. They’ll start dancing without knowing it, or they may stare at the honest music lover who is out there just doing his job. You might see many kinds of strange behaviour and it may even get a little pervy sometimes. Luckily, Renée is a man of principles. “My rules are simple: strictly no sex in the booth. I did have a mother and her daughter come to me once asking for a kiss while their husband or dad, depending how
you look at it, was having a good time in the main room. That kind of thing I have no problem with at all.” René is a genuine music lover and has a broad taste in music, but sometimes when he’s booked to play the restrooms, he is required to “play music so bad I want to hide behind the booth.” Obviously, Tomorrowland is not among these places, and the good thing is, he’s been booked to play the Mainstage toilets no less than nine times this month. “Here I get to do what I really love,” says Renée, as he plays a classic ‘80s slow jam by British outfit Imagination. “I play it all slow, but the genres can be totally different, from weird edits of well-known tracks to Latin rhythms like cumbia and reggae cuts by people like Bob Marley.” Now here comes the big question: would Renée ever give up his job as a toilet DJ were he to be asked to play the Mainstage? “The answer is decidedly no. I love playing in the toilets so much because of the way I can communicate with everyone around me. I’d rather play a set from somewhere deep down in the sewers than somewhere up in a booth high above the crowd.”
RENÉE’S BIG SURPRISE Let’s make sure Renée will have an even better time DJ’ing at the toilets today than he did yesterday. Everyone who loves a really good time, come to the toilets in the tunnel on the left-hand side of the Mainstage to show him some love by making the heart sign with your hands. Tell him Tomorrowland Today says ‘hi’, too – today, Sunday 16 July, 16h00. Be there!

THE HOLY GROUNDS A TOUR OF ALL DANCEFLOORS From the iconic, ever-changing but always magical Mainstage to dancefloors overlooked by giant mushrooms to a peaceful, out-of-this-world face overgrown by jungle plants to a friendly giant dragon, Tomorrowland’s magic is made in large part by its stages. As you will have noticed by now, there’s never a dull moment as you switch between styles such as EDM, techno, psytrance, house, drum & bass and hardstyle in front of varying backdrops. What’s more, the stages are always a visual fit to the walls of sound they host. Everything, in other words, is taken care of for you when it comes to the best settings for dancing. And just in case you missed something so far, here’s a tour of all fourteen stages!
MAINSTAGE THE REFLECTION OF LOVE The Mainstage is the undisputed centrepiece of Tomorrowland, the one everyone is always most excited to see. 2022’s decor is a true Reflection of Love, a grandiose celebration of good-hearted science fiction. It’s the true Holy Ground, a place of ceremonies and rituals. The structure is white, it is gold, it is magnificent, and it reaches higher into the sky than ever before in the history of Tomorrowland… The Mainstage is where the guiding souls of love – all wearing fanciful white suits – make you feel welcome, and it is where they’ll eventually salute you at the end of this glorious threeday festival.
THE ROSE GARDEN RAMPAGE | BONZAI | 2010-2012 Entering the Rose Garden feels like entering the dragon like Bruce Lee in his famous movie. The dragon overlooked the field and the adjacent lake while you danced to the best in drum & bass and liquid funk on Friday, when the stage was hosted by Rampage. Saturday was for the legendary Belgian label Bonzai, famous for its unique blend of trance, hardcore and techno. Then last but not least, on Sunday, The Rose Garden is where you'll relive Tomorrowland like it’s 2010-2012 with the very best EDM and trance DJs from that age including Dada Life, Sidney Samson and Thomas Gold.
HARBOUR HOUSE RADIO ULTRA MODERN Built on the edge of the water, the Harbour House is your safe haven for high-quality eclectic sounds. The theatrical decoration, the silly performances, and the brilliant DJs all add to the coziness and good vibrations of this stage. Ever since its first hosting at TML, Radio Ultra Modern has been your go-to provider of everything funky, groovy and quirky. Be it R&B or hip hop, dancehall or dance classics – Radio Ultra Modern serves them all on a tantalizing dish of all-you-can-eat dancefloor delicacies. Feast your ears, grind your behinds and feed your souls with Lady S, Daddy K, Omdat Het Kan Soundsystem and many others. 18
MOOSE BAR MOOSE BAR Sun is shining, the weather is sweet and the temperatures are scorching. None of that means you can’t get into the festive après-ski mood if you want to! Upon arrival at the Moose Bar, you won’t need to get rid of your skis and snowboard due to the typical seasonal conditions of the Belgian summer. All you might want to do is grab a lager, say cheers and start dancing to the evergreen hits played by classically trained party jocks such as Jeroen Visser, Michael More, Lorenz Buffel, Kurt Verheyen, Thierry VonderWarth and many others. Looking forward to Tomorrowland Winter yet?

FREEDOM BUD | Q-DANCE | BUD The Freedom Stage is a technical feat of epic proportions, hosted by beverage partner Bud on Friday and Sunday, and by Dutch hardstyle heroes Q-dance on Saturday. Armed with a massive LED backdrop, giant dragonflies, and spotlights scanning the room for happy ravers’ faces, this is an unparalleled experience. Eric Prydz set the standard on Friday, boggling the mind with his impressive 3D HOLO show. Friday and Sunday line-ups are a mixed bag with both established and newcomer house and techno DJs, from Paul Kalkbrenner to Amber Broos. Saturday showcased the pounding face of hard dance with Da Tweekaz, Sub Zero Project and more.
ATMOSPHERE KNTXT | AFTERLIFE | DRUMCODE The Atmosphere is a massive indoor stage, filled with all the top-notch artists your techno heart could ever desire . The custom-made tentstructure caters to thousands of dedicated party people, and has an immense backline of LED screens to further ignite the explosive dance floor. Each day of the weekend, another techno institute is taking control, starting with Charlotte de Witte’s beloved techno brand KNTXT on Friday. Tale of Us’ Afterlife conglomerate was calling the shots on Saturday, and on Sunday, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode Records is taking the lead. Expect techno in all of its relentless shapes, from Bart Skils b2b Monika Kruse to Chris Liebinwg and from ANNA to Stephan Bodzin.
CAGE COINCIDENCE | STAR WARZ | FOOTWORXX At Cage, the darkness of clubs and warehouses is celebrated in full effect. The electronic music you'll hear all over Tomorrowland emerged from such spaces across New York City and the Midwestern USA, before diverging into a plethora of new styles in the UK warehouse rave scene. The music today is a little different than back in the day, though. Cage is where you lose yourself to the sounds of hardstyle, drum & bass and techno DJs like Tha Playah, Scepticz b2b SVB and Cynthia Spiering. If you love ultra-energetic vibes and rhythms, then Cage is where your friends will find you.
THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
THE RAVE CAVE KRANKENHAUS | WE PLAY HOUSE | CRYSTAL Tomorrowland may have grown to be the ringleader of massive, epic, and larger-than life festival experiences, but it will never cease to honour the roots of its musical success. The Rave Cave is the place to take you back to the original vibe of outdoor partying – back when all you needed to get down was a pair of speakers, a handful of dope ass DJs and a tunnel (aka the Rave Cave) to rave in. On Friday, the Rave Cave was hosted by Begian promoters Krankenhaus. Saturday, the cave was the domain of Brussels’ We Play House. And on Sunday, Antwerp’s very own Crystal Events is taking over the tunnel.
LEAF BY JBL PIV | SHOMI | FLOW Powered by JBL and stacked with solid grooves is the LEAF stage. As you walk onto this island, you will feel all your mainland woes drift away in the breeze. The palm trees are swinging from left to right, and so are the hips of your fellow island hoppers. This is where the DJ is at eye level, getting down with you as you raise your hands in pure bliss. Lifting your moods and spirits for three days on end, high-quality sounds are provided by Dutch house dons PIV on Friday, Antwerp’s soulful house connoisseurs SHOMI on Saturday, and Belgian house heads FLOW on Sunday.

CORE PRINTWORKS | CORE | ELLUM Enter the world of the incredible Core stage, which has slowly but surely become a Tomorrowland classic. Now also a brand-new annual festival of its own, Core has literally put a face to the music this year. Centred around a figure with a serene, upward gaze, the stage is a temple of human expression right in the middle of a mysterious forest. Core is where you become one with nature while you dance to the sounds of the world’s best forward-thinking DJs. It’s a place you’d never want to leave if it weren’t for all the other wonderful provinces of Tomorrowland still on your travel bucket list. 20

CRYSTAL GARDEN DIPLO’S HIGHER GROUND | NETSKY & FRIENDS | SEXY BY NATURE Smoke on the water this year at the Crystal Garden! If there ever were an enchanted swamp worth visiting, it would be this magnificent piece of floating art. Drifting on the water and steaming on all sides, it oozes eclectic beats and enticing sounds. The hosting partners this year only add to the excitement of it all. On Friday, Diplo showcased his famous Higher Ground concept. On Saturday, Netsky and his friends were on the wheels of steel. And on Sunday, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano’s Sexy By Nature is touching down to spread sexy dance vibes. Steaminess is guaranteed.
THE LIBRARY THE LIBRARY | THE LIBRARY | SMASH THE HOUSE The Library is where you indulge in wisdom, surrounded by the giant books strewn all around the stage. Their presence is enough; there’s no need to read the pages. The Library is where DJs and performers fire their beats right at you as if they were poetry or literary fiction. The Library’s soundtrack throughout the weekend is a sweet and energetic mix of deep house, hardstyle, psytrance and EDM, played by a wide array of DJs including Ofenbach, Nicky Romero, Vini Vici, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Bassjackers and Tungevaag.
YOUPHORIA PUSSY LOUNGE | PSYGATHERING | MONSTERCAT The wonderfully decorated Youphoria stage is where lush mushrooms grow abundantly, for an enhanced psychedelic experience. The fungi are delicate organisms and there is always a lot to look at here. The DJ booth is at the base of four of them, with a great view for the selector onto the entire dancing crowd. This is where you got to enjoy thumping psytrance beats on Saturday, but also where you heard some of the crazier hard dance styles including happy hardcore on Friday. Youphoria shows no signs of slowing down on Sunday, when it is the place to be for fans of dance music's catchiest platform, Monstercat. THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
KARA SAVI
SECRET STAGE
KARA SAVI | GLITTERBOX | CAFEINA This small and intimate stage blasts its beats from the mouth of a spiral shell somehow risen from the bottom of the ocean onto the festival site. Kara Savi is the kind of stage you’ll only find at Tomorrowland; full of atmosphere and with an actual beach to complete the feeling. This dancefloor is where the true spirit of club culture in all its forms is celebrated, with Tinlicker delivering euphoric progressive house on Friday, Glitterbox bringing disco and house from the early days on Saturday, while Tofke, one of Belgium’s heroes from the ‘90s, is playing the stage on Sunday.

REFLECTING LOVE... Every breathtaking smile, every mesmerizing gaze, and every heartwarming touch is a Reflection of Love here at Tomorrowland. The People of Tomorrow have so much love to share, it is a marvellous idea that it will be spread to all corners of the world when this chapter of Tomorrowland is over, and everyone leaves full of love to give to everyone dear to their heart. But while we’re all still here at the epicenter in Boom, to whom would the People of Tomorrow send this love?
IZZY & MILLE
VICTORIA
FROM AUSTRALIA TO AUSTRALIA
FROM BRAZIL TO BRAZIL
“We’ll send love to this young girl back home,” say these girls, who both come from a small-town village. The Australian Tomorrowland flag they wear as a cape shows they are a long way from home. “Tomorrowland was my dream for 10 years. I was thinking about going alone, until the both of us met through work. The young girl is the daughter of my boss and it's her dream now too.”
With her blue outfit, Victoria looks like she knew this question was coming. Her love is sent overseas to her unborn nephew. “I don’t know his name yet, his mother is due in November.” This will be the first child of her only brother. “We live far away from each other,” she adds. “I can’t wait to show my nephew Europe and Tomorrowland one day.”
GROUP FROM BOLOGNA
RICKY & MIRJA
FROM GERMANY TO SINGAPORE
FROM ITALY TO ITALY Who would ever guess these four Roman gladiators are from Italy? The group of 9 is split in half, but they’re less divided when it comes to where to send the love. “Of course we will send love to our home country, Italia!” Take a wild guess to whom exactly they want to send the love... “Mama!” One gladiator points out the stage across the water, saying “I just called her from there!”
This couple’s love is so strong, it withstood being separated for two years. “Send our strong love to everyone in Singapore, where Ricky was born,” they say. Ricky was studying in Germany when Mirja spotted her prince charming five years ago. He had to go back for government obligations and due to COVID, Mirja couldn’t visit. “Now we are back together and plan to live in Singapore one day.”
HAN CHEN WU
FROM LUXEMBOURG TO TAIWAN This citizen of the world wants to send all of the good vibes from Tomorrowland to her parents in Taiwan. They are often a little worried, since Han Chen Wu parties a lot. “They always tell me to be careful and not to drink too much,” she clarifies while jumping up and down. Her dream is to show them Paris and Amsterdam, however: “One day, I will.”

... ALL OVER THE GLOBE
HANH
FLO & ARNE
FROM BELGIUM TO VIETNAM
FROM GERMANY TO UKRAINE
Her draped Tomorrowland flag of unity suits Hahn well: “I was born in Hong Kong and live in Belgium.” The sticker on the globe for her cousin is a bittersweet reflection of love for Hanh. She hasn’t seen her family in Vietnam since 2018 due to the pandemic. Her cousin Ngoc-Anh holds a special place in her heart. “We always travel together when I’m there, I wish she was here.”
“All the People of Tomorrow are so open and friendly. There is no aggression at all,” says Arne. It might look like they’re bananas in their funny melon shirts, but don’t let them fool you. There is more in life than parties and fun, so the guys want to send their love to Ukraine. Flo: “I’ve got Ukrainian colleagues who we are supporting with several initiatives, and now some Tomorrowland love.”
AMBER
NELE
FROM BELGIUM TO TEXAS
FROM BELGIUM TO MEXICO
Tomorrowland doesn’t feel the same for Amber anymore. Her close friend Caroline chose a life in the Wild West instead of going wild at the Mainstage. “We would always go to Tomorrowland together,” Amber explains, while placing her sticker over Dallas. “They run their own company with outdoor heaters for the US now.” Things being as they are, Amber will have to run up the heat all by herself for the time being.
Nele wishes to send love to her friend Sarah. “She is flying to Mexico at this very moment, so she couldn’t join me today.” Sarah works as a flight attendant. “I just wish she could reroute to Tomorrowland as her final destination,” she says wistfully while looking up into the sky upon her wish. “Our best memory is our trip to South Africa, but I’d like to change that into an adventure at Tomorrowland!”
KRISHAWN
FROM THE BAHAMAS TO CANADA “All love to my best friend Collin in Canada! He couldn’t make it,” says Krishawn, who is wandering around the MESA Garden with the bright sun as his natural spotlight. “For me it’s a dream come true being here, at the mother of all festivals,” he adds. This summer, Krishaw is living his best life in Europe instead of Canada. “Collin will come to Croatia, where we will party together.”

WISDOM MIXING THINGS UP
WARNING! THE FAIRYTALE CONTINUES... Tomorrowland is bringing the party back to the breathtakingly beautiful island of Ibiza. Until September 21st, the iconic duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are back at Ushuaïa with a string of legendary shows, catching the energy of the shimmering sunlight reflections on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea. No plans to visit Ibiza this summer? No worries, as Dimitri and Mike are also transforming the Antwerp Sportpaleis into a marvelous indoor festival – The Garden of Madness – on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 December. What to expect? Well, the brothers will be pulling out all the stops, with shows produced by Tomorrowland. This means that the stage, decoration and all special effects are in the hands of their creative team. No doubt it promises to be both spectacular and magical. In Dimitri’s very own words: “Everyone is hereby officially warned!"
There is no better feeling than that sense of belonging you get on a dancefloor. A place where everyone, regardless of identity, can assemble to express themselves without inhibitions. Tomorrowland and Absolut have come together to create a commitment toward a more diverse and inclusive Tomorrow with the initiative called United We Dance, aiming to create real impact. Part of this is putting six artists from underrepresented backgrounds in the spotlight: self-made female Brazilian producer Carola, non-binary transsexual multitalent Mandidextrous, Black pansexual non-binary artist Moore Kismet, female Taiwanese breakout star RayRay, Odssey, who uses his autism to fuel his creative process, and Jana Vitiligo, who has claimed her autoimmune condition as positive part of her identity. By offering these six trailblazers a platform, United We Dance aims to increase representation of their respective backgrounds and stimulate a more diverse Tomorrow. Find out more about them and read their interviews at unitedwedance.tomorrowland.com!
LOVE TOMORROW CONFERENCE Tomorrowland is dedicated to caring for Planet Earth and is working hard towards reducing its CO2 and water footprints, with the intention of reaching full circularity in the foreseeable future. In collaboration with their partner Love Tomorrow, the festival aims to achieve a spillover effect into parts of society beyond the grounds here in Boom. It is with this idea in mind that the first edition of Love Tomorrow, a conference centered around sustainability themes, takes place on the festival grounds on the Thursday ahead of the third Tomorrowland weekend. The conference program will feature inspiring presentations by pioneering speakers such best-selling author Yuval Noah Harari, renowned filmmaker Ali Tabrizi, as well as techno artist and environmental activist Ida Engberg. More than just a conference, this unique event by Love Tomorrow will also feature magical live entertainment, including classic Tomorrowland elements such as a Daybreak Session. For more info and tickets for the event, which will take place on 28 July 2022, go to lovetomorrowconference.com.
SWITCH FOR TOMORROW If only the whole world were as positive, colourful and connected as this magical place right here, you may have already found yourself thinking. Nothing is impossible, and it all starts with consciousness. With every choice you make, think of the bigger picture. With that in mind, chances are you will choose positive change. You will switch for Tomorrow! To set this change in motion, enter the soul-cleansing Tunnel of Mist at the food area behind the Mainstage. Entering this tunnel signifies a positive attitude change. From here on, you will be more mindful of all the greatness that surrounds you. Passing a person with the most vibrant smile? Return it! Mesmerised by another’s dance moves? Tell them! See someone cleaning up litter? Applaud and hel them! Enchanted by the energy here? Connect with your fellow People of Tomorrow and spontaneously join the free hugmovement. At the Tunnel of Mist, you can also get your photo taken for charity; every #switchfortomorrow photo means a direct donation to the Tomorrowland Foundation. This way, you get to take home a souvenir while topping up your karma points. And good karma is surely on the way for this beautiful couple! 24
TASTE THE WORLD IN ANTWERP Did you know that your love for the Mesa Garden can continue beyond the borders of the festival grounds? Mesa also has an easy-going bar/restaurant in the heart of the beautiful city of Antwerp, and it’s all about sharing dishes. Their team serves a unique experience of cocktails, tacos, dips, bites and signature dishes to you share with your friends and family. The food and cocktails are inspired by the Tastes of the World cuisine of Tomorrowland with typical and delicious flavours from all corners of the world. THE REFLECTION OF LOVE

FEELING GOOD, LOOKING BETTER Three years of living apart never felt like not-together. It is a special connection that the People of Tomorrow share. More than meeting at the Holy Grounds, they are united in their love of music, their wild freedom and unstoppable positivity. All these elements come together in the TML by Tomorrowland collections, which luckily remained available all over the globe. Even when distance felt far and wide at times, in all corners of the world, you remained visibly part of this unique tribe through your choice of apparel. This weekend, finally, you got to see it with your own two eyes: you all remained united, forever. In case you missed your chance at the festival, extend the magic and buy your own gear here at store.tomorrowland.com.
DRIVING YOUR DREAMS Ever wanted the chance to share your message of joy with the entire world? At the Magical Forest of Joy by BMW, behind the Mainstage, you can submit your dearest wish for a chance to win a dream drive by BMW to the Garden of Madness event at Sportpaleis Antwerp this December. “I’ve kind of always wanted to write on a car,” visitor Ann-Sophie from Belgium giggles. Together with her friends Dorine, Julie, Charlotte and Kathleen, she’s drafting a very clear message on the tablet. When we ask her if she wants to share that statement with us, she responds: “Of course! It’s a quote I read a while ago abroad, and it has become our group motto ever since. ‘We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy’. Hopefully others will find this quote just as inspiring, so that we win the prize.” If you have a message of your own that you think everyone should see, you can submit your quote all weekend long at the stand, and your might win the Exclusive Experience with BMW for BMW Friends Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s stadium show this winter. And whether you win or not, the enchanting fairies of the Magical Forest will be there guide you along the way.
THE HEART OF THE MARKETPLACE What would a marketplace be without a supermarket? Nothing! Here you’ll find the golden Supermarket store by Carrefour, with everything you need to treat yourself and your fellow townies. Grab fresh fruit and some warm baguettes, for instance, when it’s your turn to serve breakfast in bed. Next to refrigerators full of your favorite chilled drinks, you’ll find a freezer filled with packages for the BBQ. Isa (25) from Germany is amazed by all the store has to offer. “I’m a pro when it comes to weekend festivals, and I’m looking around to make sure I know exactly where to be.” The Carrefour staff is not so used to this environment as Lisa. Vincent (47) works as expansion manager for the chain, but today he’s serving the People of Tomorrow at the cash register. “The ambiance and the people are amazing,” he utters, while handing over yet another chock-full Tomorrowland grocery bag. If you want to get your hands on one of those too, the Carrefour supermarket is opened Friday-Sunday 08h00-16h00 and 23h00-03h00, and Monday 07h30-12h00. THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
KINDNESS MATTERS Education is the key to a better future. But life is not only about knowledge. Being able to express yourself creatively is just as important. That’s why the Tomorrowland Foundation aims to support children and youngsters between the ages of 4 and 21 from all over the world, focusing on projects that aim to give them the chance to express themselves creatively and work on their self-esteem. Music, dance and arts are key in this personal development. And they are able to do so, thanks to your spontaneous donations and contributions! So on behalf of the Tomorrowland Foundation it is we say: Danke sehr, Merci, Grazie Mille, Stokrotnedzięki and Thank You So Much!
THE VERY BEST CONTENT Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun. And a special talent in that field is exactly what Coca-Cola is looking for. They partnered up with Tomorrowland in order to find content creators for the Coke Studio, located close to the One World Radio studio. Their content will be used for the Coke Studio YouTube Challenge. But this is not the only exciting part about the Coke Studio. It is also home to the best Coca-Cola cocktails of Tomorrowland and the perfect place to unwind in one of the comfortable beanbags on the beautiful sunny deck. Want to take an everlasting memory home? Make sure you step into the Coke Studio Photo Booth, in which you can create your own 3D GIF on one of the most photogenic spots on the site.

House music is a feeling, and the same goes for any of the other genres of electronic music that are to be enjoyed at Tomorrowland. Music is what unites us, the People of Tomorrow, more than anything else. So get ready for it: in this section of today’s newspaper, you’ll read everything you didn’t realise you always wanted to know about the world’s most incredible DJs and producers. Reading artist bios and interviews, and studying Tomorrowland’s official timetable, is the best way to prepare yourself for the sonic splendour that awaits at the Holy Grounds. Enjoy!
SMASH THE HOUSE
DRUMCODE
Belgian-Greek brothers Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have been an essential part of Tomorrowland for about a decade now. Both their Ushuaïa residency in Ibiza and their Sportpaleis Antwerp nights are Tomorrowland-produced; these guys live and breathe Tomorrowland in everything they do, in other words. It comes as no surprise, then, that their stage hosting turns out to be one of the most outstanding today. The artists featured at the Smash the House stage are a mixed bag with something for everyone’s taste, but share one thing with the two curators of the stage: their love for unadulterated partying. Classic Dutch EDM duo Bassjackers, the incredible Tungevaag from Norway and Martin ‘Solo Dance’ Jensen are all present today.
Some say Sundays are for relaxing. While there’s nothing wrong with doing just that, there are a few places in Boom that represent the exact opposite today. One of them is the Atmosphere stage, where Drumcode, one of Sweden’s most established techno labels, will take over. Representing the Naples scene is longtime label affiliate Joseph Capriati, who will share the stage with techno’s fastest rising star, ANNA from Brazil. Atmosphere will also be the scene of an exclusive B2B featuring Voltt’s Bart Skills, who’s been asked to challenge Monika Kruse, one of Germany’s most acclaimed ladies of techno. Last but not least, a Drumcode stage would never be complete without a set by Adam Beyer, the man who originated the label.

Their biggest hit may well be the percussive house track Give It Up, which leans heavily on sampled samba rhythms. A remix by Detroit’s Carl Craig, which also became a classic of its own, followed suit. During the first decades of the 21st century, the duo kept releasing banger after banger as René et Gaston, Jark Prongo, Zki & Dobre, The Goodmen and, of course, Chocolate Puma. Are you a music freak who wants to arrive well-prepared? Then make sure to check out the tracks Vallée de Larmes, Complete Control, I Wanna Be U, Rock Your Body and of course Give It Up. You may well get lucky and hear them again when these two legends come on after you’ve just had your breakfast. One thing is for sure; with such a wide range of releases under their belt, their Daybreak Session can’t be anything but very interesting and entertaining.

SOFI TUKKER SEXY BY NATURE | 19H30
Sofe Tukker is the musical love child of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. Since they incorporate such a wide variety of genres from all over the world, their style is impossible to pinpoint, yet the outcome is a signature sound that’s poppy but unmistakably theirs. Thanks to hits like ‘Drinkee’ and ‘Best Friend’ (featuring NERVO) and their Grammy Award-winning debut album ‘Treehouse’, they now have a loyal worldwide following. Tomorrowland Today had a conversation with Sophie and Tucker on the road to talk about their new album ‘WET TENNIS’, dream collaborations and – last but not least – trash can aesthetics. Guys, you’re in the car right now. Where did you come from, and where are you headed? Sophie: “We’re on our way from Lisbon, which was a great show. The day before, we played at Electric Castle in Cluj, Romania. It’s such a cool festival.” Tucker: “Right now, we’re on our way to Belgium. We’re really looking forward to playing at Tomorrowland again.” You incorporate a wide variety of styles into your music. Can you tell us more about your personal musical influences? Tucker: “It’s interesting, because we come from entirely different backgrounds. I grew up in Boston, where my parents played a lot of oldies, and lots of disco. Then I got into basketball, and was heavily influenced by rap and punk. In college, I got into house music and DJ culture.” Sophie: “My parents moved around a lot, so I lived in many different parts of the world, where I would go to international schools. Manu Chao was extremely popular in my high school. I loved how he would incorporate different languages, other than English, into his music. Up until then, I had only known bands who would try to sing in English. I decided to study Portuguese and move to Brazil.” You released your first album ‘Treehouse’ on Ultra in 2017. Can you take us through your musical journey since then? Sophie: “We made our first track ‘Drinkee’ when we were still in
THE REFLECTION OF LOVE
college. Then we produced our first album soon afterwards. Our second album was very different from our first. During lockdown, we were DJ’ing and livestreaming every single day.” Tucker: “It was a great way to keep ourselves sane during those trying times. To reach people in their living rooms was also a beautiful way to connect and unite. On the one hand, the album is a reflection of our DJ sets, on the other, it also contains more chilled-out jams than ‘Treehouse.’”
with friends. But the one with Amadou & Mariam was through a charity project. They asked us who we would find the most interesting group in the world to collaborate with. Tucker and me come from such different worlds, but ‘Sabali’ by Amadou & Mariam was the first track we clicked on. And to our surprise, the collab came together. It was really inspiring to work with them, especially since both of them are blind. Can you imagine having to overcome something like that? It’s impressive.”
You mentioned elsewhere that you took your time to create a world and a concept around ‘WET TENNIS’. Can you tell us more? Tucker: “The concept is based on our livestreams. It was so heartening to watch the community connect through music. Many people lost their jobs, their livelihoods, and their loved ones. But there was such resilience and so much togetherness too. People’s choice to evolve through the hardships inspired us. That’s why ‘WET TENNIS’ stands for the following acronym: ‘When Everyone Tries To Evolve Nothing Negative Is Safe’, which means we can overcome hard times – individually and as a community – by trying to evolve.”
Are there any other dream collaborations on your bucketlist? Sophie: “We’ve mentioned him before, but Manu Chao would be amazing to work with.” Tucker: “And we were absolutely blown away by Belgian singer Stromae’s performance in Madison Square Garden. This guy has fully realized human potential. He’s out of this world! To work with him would be incredible.”
Your new album contains a bunch of collaborations, like the one with Malinese singers Amadou & Mariam. How did that come about? Sophie: “Most of our collaborations form naturally, because they’re
GLORIOUS
Yes, and speaking of Belgium... How do you feel about performing at Tomorrowland? Sophie: “We played at TML a few years back, and we were amazed at their approach to the concept of a music festival. It struck us how everything is made with love and attention, down to the smallest detail. I mean, even the trash cans have an aesthetic! That’s how Tomorrowland creates a world of its own. We’re thrilled to come back.”

SUNNERY JAMES & RYAN MARCIANO CRYSTAL GARDEN | 20H30
DJ SEINFELD CORE | 17H00
Dubbed the Dutch version of Swedish House Mafia by SHM member Axwell, crowds love Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano for their blend of funky house and percussion-driven energy. The duo’s sheer force leaves no-one unmoved, which translates into crowds jumping up and down and screaming for more. Touring globally has made the boys more and more confident doing what they do, resulting in a signature sound they will never compromise on. Production-wise, Sunnery and Ryan focus on anything driving and funky. Listen to the crisp hi-hats on the track ‘Better Things’, recorded with Ginger and Q.G., and you’ll understand what we mean. Get ready for a unique, energy-driven party with Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano taking centre stage.
Named after the legendary American sitcom series, Swedish producer Armand Jakobsson aka DJ Seinfeld entered the scene half a decade ago amidst the lo-fi house hype. After a few initial years of releasing his music through a myriad of independent labels, the Malmö-born, Barcelona-based artist has now become part of London’s famous Ninja Tune family, also home to the likes of Bonobo, Bicep and Coldcut. On his latest album 'Mirrors', named after a quote by Argentinian author Julio Cortázar, Jakobsson has managed to cross the boundaries between seemingly unrelated genres such as his first love, house music, UK bass and vocal pop. The record stands out for its melancholic, dreamlike qualities laid down on a framework of garage-style breaks, wonderfully polished into a sound that will appeal to fans of Flying Lotus, Martin Garrix, Flume and Aphex Twin alike, as they’ve all played DJ Seinfeld’s music in their sets. An avid remixer as much as he is a producer, Jakobsson has managed to reach the fans of Disclosure, Omar Souleyman, George Fitzgerald, Bob Moses, Honey Dijon, Pendulum and MJ Cole by delivering excellent reworks of their tracks. As a DJ, Seinfeld has started to build a reputation among fans of electronic indie and EDM, too, having supported the Disclosure brothers on part of their world tour before touring the world as a headlining jock himself. DJ Seinfeld is gifted with the ability to combine deep emotions with hypnotic dance floor energy, and he is not to be missed today by anyone looking to discover a whole new world of dreamy electronic sounds.

You can’t have it all... right? If you think so, you probably haven’t met Mim and Liv Nervo. These Australian twins have all the talent, the looks, and the fun. They grew up in Melbourne, where they started songwriting at an early age. They’ve had nothing short of a stellar career, working together with many of the greats. Highlights include co-writing the evergreen ‘When Love Takes Over’ for David Guetta and Kelly Rowland, writing hits for Kylie Minogue, Afrojack, Miley Cyrus, and Steve Aoki, and producing smashers like ‘Not Taking This No More’ and their latest with R3HAB and Ummet Ozcan, ‘Revolution.’ And last but not least, back in 2010, the NERVO sisters co-wrote the Tomorrowland Anthem. Be ready to welcome them to the the Mainstage again!
Born and bred in the beautiful woods of northern Germany, Pretty Pink manifested herself onto the club scene with a unique strand of almost spiritual deep house. Pretty Pink’s growing fanbase loves her for her galvanising stage performances, where she combines a sense of serenity with a relentless drive. Pretty Pink’s sets are unique and audiences feel it, whether that’s crowds in clubs or people who discovered the DJ/producer via her aptly named Deep Woods radio shows. Her first production – a critically acclaimed cover version of Daft Punk’s 'Get Lucky' – set the tone, and remixes for Armin van Buuren and Lost Frequencies followed suit. Risen from the forest, Pretty Pink may well be one of the world’s deep house superstars to be. THE REFLECTION OF LOVE

REFLECT THE MUSIC TECHNO The Reflection of Love is all about unity – a unity of loving souls, but also a gathering of widely disparate music styles. For those that like to brush up on their musical knowledge, or explore a set of sounds they’ve not danced to before, we take a deep dive into the history of one genre found at Tomorrowland. Taking it back to the bare essence, we zoom in on dance music’s most minimalist of styles – techno.
DJ DIESEL
MARCEL DETTMANN
YOUPHORIA | 20H30
CORE | 22H00
Once a world-famous basketball player, now a DJ almost as famous! Is that a unique career move or what? With his 2.16 m and 147 kg, former Los Angeles Lakers player Shaquille O’Neal was one of the tallest and heaviest players to ever play the NBA competition. So you can imagine that when this man says he’s gonna rock the stage, he will rock the stage. DJ Diesel – which is O’Neal’s stage name – plays tunes you’d expect a big man to play: heavy EDM bangers, bass tracks that rattle the body from tip to toe and, of course, lots of drops with a touch of not-so-subtle trap. You guessed it, this is party time…
Born and raised in the former DDR town of Pößneck, Marcel Dettmann entered the world of electronic music via genres that preceded techno, such as industrial, post-punk and the electronic side of new wave. Possibly the most well-known Berlin-based techno DJ by now, Marcel Dettmann has long been associated with Hardwax, an influential electronic music store that emerged just after the fall of the Berlin wall. Working in such a famous shop, becoming a techno DJ was along the line of expectations, and Dettmann soon started DJ’ing in a club called Ostgut. Ostgut became the techno institute now known as Berghain, and Dettmann still is a resident DJ here, working hard to continuously push the limits of techno.
LISTEN In the mid-‘80s, Detroit was at its most impoverished. The car industry had collapsed and turned the city into a dystopian wasteland of abandoned factories and little job opportunities. It was this grim environment that would birth house music’s angry sibling. Pioneered by the Bellville Three – Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson (who played a mesmerizing TML set on Friday) – techno was heavily inspired by German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk, American funk music and sci-fi imagery. It was in Black American culture, however, that it turned into the sound we know today. During the ‘90s, techno spread across the globe, creating new techno hubs in European cities like Berlin, Amsterdam, Ghent and Stockholm. The original Detroit sound was embraced by many during the ‘00s, with big events like I Love Techno, Awakenings and Timewarp adding to a more widespread appeal. In 2022, this captivating genre has become a worldwide phenomenon. From the Siberian stamina of Nina Kraviz and the Milwaukee madness of DVS1 to the German grit of Ben Klock – techno is here to stay. Today you can find techno in several corners of Tomorrowland. Swedish techno titans Drumcode are hosting their very own stage, bringing some of contemporary techno’s finest, like Bart Skils b2b Monika Kruse, Joseph Capriati and Adam Beyer. But there is more to be found on the other stages, like Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann and Berlin Calling superstar Paul Kalkbrenner. Time to get dancing!

PAUL KALKBRENNER
THA PLAYAH
FREEDOM | 22H30
CAGE | 20H00
Berlin’s Paul Kalkbrenner can do just about anything, or so it seems. This techno talent emerged from the underground, then topped the charts, acted in a movie, headlined festivals and amassed millions of fans, all the while refusing to compromise his grand, deep techno sound. He grew up during techno’s golden age; he turned twelve when the Berlin Wall fell, and then spent his teenage years raving, after which he started to DJ and produce himself. Many of his tracks - including ‘Sky and Sand’, ‘No Goodbye’, ‘Feed Your Head’ and ‘Parachute’, have become classics in the dance scene. Kalkbrenner’s energetic sets are known to be highly entertaining, a feast for new and longtime techno fans alike.
Tomorrowland will go out with a bang today anyway, and that will certainly be the case if you decide to hang out at the Cage. The stage will be hosted by Footworxx, a Belgian brand selling uncompromised, high-paced, distorted beats. One of the highlights today is set to be a performance by Tha Playah, a man with a big resumé when it comes to hardcore music. From his seventeen years of releasing on Neophyte Records, to more recent output on his very own imprint State of Anarchy, Tha Playah keeps on adding gems to the universe of hardcore music. The title of his most recent album ‘Sick and Twisted’ is telling: it’s full of punishing anthems, just the way the gabbers like them.
