o f To mo r row,

YOU HAV E THE OC E ANS RU NN IN G T H ROUGH YOU R VEINS! Who could have known the People of Tomorrow were such competent swimmers? With strong and steadfast strokes, friends, you dove down into the heart of Planaxis. Through winding passageways and between soaring seashells you floated, exploring ever more of the ocean floor and making it your home. In the cracks and crevices down there, something miraculous had happened: fabled creatures of the deep, two-legged mermaids and luminous fish-men known only from fairytales, had grown to become reality in Planaxis’ fertile soil. With these watery wonders gliding all about, it was not hard for you to join.

Soon, the crowds of Tomorrow moved like shoals of fish: in waves, in wondrous patterns, each and every single person enraptured in their own movement, but amounting to an organic whole nonetheless. True citizens of Planaxis, the ocean runs in your blood now; and as the oceans out there flow across the world as one, you have become connected into a single unity. During your next day in paradise, friends, there is a task at hand for you, as Planaxis’ ultimate purpose has not yet been met. Use your shared energy for good, for something beyond unity: use it to harmonize with all the world. Now off into the blue you go!

THE STORY OF PLANAXIS No one knows exactly how, why, or when Planaxis was built. The identity of its Architect is long lost to history, its first inhabitants are no longer with us. One thing was preserved for all these years, however, and has surfaced with the call for the People of Tomorrow to unite: a diary, waterlogged and old, but supposedly belonging to none other than the visionary mind behind Planaxis. Its third entry details the building process.

Well, well, well. There it is, slowly working reefs, our home is shaping up: the great its way out of the seafloor: Planaxis. Shell by nautilus whirls elegantly over newly built shell, bit by bit, it’s finally coming together. living quarters, the garden dome is nearing its apex, and the observation towers come closer It was a rough road getting here, and building to the surface every day. the big structures remains a struggle. From furious storms to treacherous earthquakes: In the middle of it all, my proudest creation mother Nature is showing her most impressive already presides over the proceedings. The side. All these dangers are part of the beauty humble seahorse. It is tough and proud, of the ocean, though, and ultimately, we will swimming upright amidst its fellow fish, succeed. We are working with the seas, not but also fragile and endangered. It must be against them. protected and cherished. This little creature, then, is the most fitting symbol imaginable, At this point in time, the fruits of our labour and shall be Planaxis’ guardian and central are beginning to show. THIS IS YOUR

WAKE-UP CALL

DREAMVILLE Howdy, DreamVille, and top of the morning to ya! You’re showing some fresh faces, some slightly less fresh faces, and a whole lot of happy smiles – all beaming at the beautiful dawn. Let’s start off the day by cleaning the last bits of last night’s stardust out of your eyes, by swinging your body around, by loosening up those muscles with a little stretch. Once you’ve done that, you’re pretty much ready to take this whole Tomorrowland thing to the next level. Put on your dancing sneakers and jive your way from your tent through the magnificent rainbow, en route for yet another night of fine funkin’ at the festival. Or don’t, and stay at DreamVille a bit longer to enjoy the many marvels your new home has to offer. And believe us: there’s plenty of everything for everyone. Don’t stop ‘till you get enough, right?

Like every other year, you can win an amazing prize from them. How to compete? The studio opens at 10:00 in the morning. If you’re the first to make an airplane of your newspaper (it has to fly!), you win.

Tyrone, Javier & Aleandra started their day with some exercise. Tyrone: “This move is called the Inchworm and it just gives your full body a boost. The best thing is, you can do it whenever you like.”

For Sofia (27) from Greece, yoga is the perfect way to power up. “During the class all your worries fade away.” Inhale the sweet, salty air of Planaxis, Sofia!

“If I could have breakfast this morning with anyone in the world, it would be Justin Bieber.” Jasmin (19) from Germany knows exactly who she would invite to her tent…

Simon (25) and Stephanie (27) from Germany like to live in luxury. “We don’t go camping, we go glamping! Let's go Kokono.”

“The neighbours kept playing music until four in the morning, so we had a short night.” Carmen and Jherel (both 26) from London and Spain figured the best way to recharge was to unwind and read Tomorrowland Today in a hammock.

DROWNING IN INFORMATION

“Last night we took it easy, so this morning we’re feeling fresh and ready to go!” Alban (20) and Arne (21) from Belgium have had a relaxing morning so far. “The first thing I saw this morning was a girl dressed like an angel outside our tent, so the morning has been good so far.”

Lost something, need help or just looking for a chat? Go visit a District House at one of DreamVille’s campsites! Jan, stationed at District Red, gave us an insight on his craziest moment at the District House so far. “Most people come for some water or ask for directions. But last night I received a rather dirty question. It required 2 girls, me and a tent…” He kindly thanked them for the offer, but as a proper District House master should, he remained stationed at his desk to help out the People of Tomorrow.

“When we woke up this morning there was only one thing on our mind: water!” Alison (28), Rosali (24) and Carlos (26) needed Planaxis’ most plentiful resource as fast as possible to survive the day without a headache.

“This is what we call a Hungarian breakfast!” Gabor (32), Csaba (26) and Cabor (23) showed us how it’s done. “The best way to cure a hangover is to stay drunk.”

Bert (28) and Jilles (24) from Belgium didn’t have any female neighbours to rub sunscreen on their backs this morning. “If there are any girls willing to rub us in, they can find us at District Red! It’s between the food court and the globe.” Any volunteers?

It took Angeline (22) from Germany and her girlfriends two (!) hours to get ready. But it was worth it! Angeline: “We wanted to create a look that was fancy, because at Tomorrowland you should shine.”

COMMIT TO BE FIT Thinsar (31) travelled all the way from Myanmar. “Last night I dreamt I was going to the movies. Fun, but then I had the best morning of my life, because when I woke up I realised I was at Tomorrowland!”

Isha is a personal trainer stationed at the Matrix Recovery area. After two days of partying and dancing, it is important to keep your blood pumping and get the toxics to leave your body. Yoga is a good way to start or end any exercise. The Twisted Lunge (as demonstrated by Isha) is good for stretching your hips and improves circulation. “Just sweat, smile and repeat!”

Wash your worries away

Even though there aren’t any flowers growing in this garden, the serene smell of fresh flowers comes your way. You can bring your clothes to the Miele Laundry Garden and get them washed, dried and ironed. And it’s all done with a big smile from the charming laundry ladies. “We have mostly guys coming in to wash their shirts. Perhaps they didn’t prepare for the weekend as well as the girls did.” At the Garden, you can sit back, relax and wait for your clothes to get spotless. “The best part is that you don’t have to wait here if you don’t want to. You can just continue with your daily routine and we’ll send you a text message when your laundry is ready!”

Come find me

A lot of you came sliding into my DMs again, and I can honestly say it was a tough job choosing a new winner. But congratulations German Syroezhkin, you just won a TML by Tomorrowland package! The team is going to contact you ASAP. Let me give you a hint for today, now. I was casually strolling around the fields and found my perfect place to stay. But remember, I’m a girl that can appreciate a little effort. Tracked me down? Send your selfie of us to today@tomorrowland.com. I’ll choose my favorite picture every day, so even if you haven’t managed to find me yet, there’s always tomorrow.

CHEF OF THE DAY

When the usual festival meal (read: pizzas and burgers) doesn’t sound so impressive anymore, you can choose to boost your health with a detox blend or a healthy bowl. We have reached an era where feeling good is (almost) as important as looking good, so why not go for a drink that stimulates both? Ellen Schreuder, owner of Soupa Doupa, welcomes you to her – mostly vegan – juice bar. “I really believe that taking care of your body is the new drinking.”

SELFIES WITH A GREAT VIEW SHOW US YOUR WORLD Last Thursday, TML Today roamed the DreamVille site with a big map of this beautiful world we’re living in. We asked you where you’re from, what you do and what you like. We wanted you to pin your hometown on our map and hear your personal stories. Now, we need you to keep on telling us how many seas you’ve crossed to get to Planaxis. Take a selfie with our map (and your friends), point out where you’re from and send it to us at today@tomorrowland.com. Maybe your beautiful faces will feature on these pages right here, showing your love for your homes.

An astonishing Ferris wheel stands at the edge of Tomorrowland. It’s a place where the brave People of Tomorrow can take off to fly around the world. People have flown to Tomorrowland from many cities; so naturally, every pod on the Ferris wheel represents a different one. Niamh from Ireland stepped inside the Stockholmthemed cart and took off. Niamh: “It’s so great to see the entire festival from above. I can’t wait to go for another round by night to see all the shimmering lights.” While on the ride, you can share your selfie with #Brusselsairlinesloop. Your photo flies into the Instagram cloud, and the technicians from Brussels Airlines will have it printed and ready by the time you step out of the wheel. Don’t forget to take this pic with you on every journey yet to come!

CHARLOTTE DE WITTE

m a k i n g wav e s i n t h e t ec h n o ga m e

If Dave Clarke is the Baron of techno, then Charlotte de Witte is definitely the Queen. Riding the cusp of a wave of fresh talent roaring through the techno scene, she’s made many famous fans – Chris Liebing and Richie Hawtin, to name but a few. Yesterday she played the Mainstage right after Carl Cox, and in November she’ll be hosting her own KNTXT XXL night at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. Make no mistake about it: Charlotte’s career is going as fast and as hard as her powerful beats.

The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

2018

“I mean: there’s a techno act playing the Mainstage of Tomorrowland, who would’ve thought that a couple of years ago?” You’ve released two EPs this year already, compared to last year’s four. Does that mean there’s more to come? “I have one more track coming out later this year on a compilation album, but that’s about it. I really need to get back into the studio. I’ve played so many shows that I haven’t really had the time to fire up my laptop and produce. I’ve underestimated my schedule a bit, I’m afraid. It’s been a wild ride. I pretty much haven’t been home at all in May. I bought a new laptop to try and create some things on tour, but mostly touring gets you so tired that in between shows, you can’t get your brain to function on a level high enough to write new tracks. You just want to get to bed and empty-headedly watch some series on Netflix. I’ve made some new loops, but that’s about it. It’s a lesson I’m taking with me for my next tour (laughs).” Doesn’t visiting all those cities all around the world inspire you to write new material? “It definitely does, as they all have their distinct vibe and feel, which gets creativity flowing. But given that it’s just me by myself on tour most of the time, I tend to take the last flight to my destination, have a quick bite, try to sleep a couple of hours before the show and two hours after, and then it’s on to the next one. The time I’m spending in those cities is so limited, I rarely have the opportunity to really soak up the city’s atmosphere.”

Do you feel like you’ve evolved as a producer over the last two years? “Yeah, absolutely. Especially on the last EP, which was recorded exactly a year ago. I feel that that one is more profound, in a way, than what I’ve done before. It’s not conceived with the idea that people need to dance to it as much. I basically just wanted to do whatever the hell I wanted. And if there’s more tracks on the EP, you have the room to elaborate and tell different stories throughout.” Was the idea that people needed to dance to your music the main thought on the EPs that came before? “I guess subconsciously, it definitely was. Hung up between different ways to do things, I would always choose the danceable option. The tracks I’ve done recently can be danced to as well, obviously, but you might need a little more time to really get into them.” Melancholia seems to be a big part of your music, as well as the trademark voices you blend in there. Are those the main ingredients? “I love working with those voices. First of all, because they’re so easy to work with. I’ve never learned to play an instrument. I can play some piano, but it took me a while to get to a level that was just a tiny bit better 10

than abominable. Those voices create a hook in your track which keeps it very plain and stripped, which I truly love. And that probably makes it so melancholic, because it’s everything but chaotic music, it’s pure. I find it to be much more interesting to lose yourself in a few elements, rather than overflooding your music with all sorts of sounds.” How do you feel when someone like Richie Hawtin or Chris Liebing plays your tracks? “That’s simply crazy, every single time. At Awakenings, a couple of weeks ago, Chris Liebing played the same stage I did. I stood there watching him from the backstage as he played three or four songs of mine. I crawled behind him to hug his leg with excitement, thanking him for doing so. The biggest compliment you can get as a techno producer is having your tracks played by one of those big shots. It really honours me to have them supporting me like that. I mean – I’m still a little new to the scene, I’m young, and therefore there’s obstacles to take. You need to keep on proving yourself as you grow. The fact that guys like Chris and Richie have my back is just wild. Techno is a scene where you need to pay your dues in order to get where you want to be - and rightfully so. But when Chris plays my tracks, posts them online and tags me, I feel as if it’s his way of saying ‘she’s new, she’s young, but she’s definitely OK. We’ve got your back’.”

2018

The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

“At a festival, you adjust a bit with some more hooks, and then blow the roof right off with a Belgian trance classic at the end.”

Do you think they get inspired themselves, having someone younger pushing them to their limits? “I believe so. Chris Liebing has been in the scene for over 25 years. I think he finds it interesting that there’s new talent out there ready to join him on the barricades for techno. I think it would be rather foolish to do otherwise, to ignore the fact that me and many others are catching up to the scene. In the end, we’re all doing this for the same reasons, coming from that same deeply felt love for techno music.” Did the scene change since you started playing techno? “It got bigger. I’ve been DJ’ing for over eight years now, starting out with electro before moving on to techno somewhat over five years ago. Back then I still lived in Ghent, and there were some techno parties, but not to the present extent. Nowadays techno is all around. I mean: there’s a techno act playing the Mainstage of Tomorrowland, who would’ve thought that a couple of years ago?” Techno’s success in Belgium is partially to your merit, as there has never been a bigger Belgian techno name than Charlotte de Witte. This means that you’re bringing in people from other scenes, of course, because they know your name but aren’t necessarily educated in techno. Do you notice the difference between those audiences? “At the shows I’ve played at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels or at Rock Werchter Festival: yes, there is a difference between the vibe I get there and the one I would get in a sweaty nightclub or at Awakenings or Time Warp. When you’re playing those shows you know you’re part of something bigger than just techno, and that’s fine. Studio Brussel, the radio station where I hosted my own show for years, played a huge role in how people got to know me, especially in Belgium. You’ll see a different audience at Rock Werchter than you do at an all-nighter at Fuse in Brussels. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was just as crazy, you simply adjust your set a little bit with some more hooks, and then blow the roof right off with a Belgian trance classic at the end!” Your own concept KNTXT started off at Fuse. How did that come about? “I think we did the first one almost four years ago. I’d played there before, and the guys contacted me asking to host my own night. Needless to say, I dove right in! Since then it’s been pretty much all that I do in Belgium. Well, there’s a little something else coming up later this year…

You’ll be hosting KNTXT in the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, pretty much the biggest venue in Belgium. There have been drum ’n bass parties and EDM events there, but never a full-blown techno night. What can people expect? “We were like: let’s just f*cking do this and slay! Bigger, better, bolder. Soon, we’ll release the third headliner next to Len Faki and myself, but I can already tell you that we have a line-up that will blow your mind. And productionwise, we’re gonna go all the way. It will be in the spirit of techno, so no confetti, no multi-coloured lights, but rather sober and with an industrial touch to things. It will blast your goddamn head right off!”

House of Mask Tomorrowland is a massive place and walking around in the sun all day can sure make you thirsty. Thirsty for liquid, but also for uninterrupted house, techno, and EDM bangers. Luckily for you there’s a place where you can find it all: the House of Mask stage by Cubanisto! In this glow-in-the-dark area, both Rum- and Mojitoflavoured beer are served in custom Tomorrowland bottles; this golden liquid marries beautifully with a slice of fresh orange, and it is the perfect dance companion for the line-up. There is also a photobooth where you can get silly with your friends and capture that moment for ever. Featuring Fabrice Lig, Nico Morano, Eelke Kleijn and many others, this stage is the hidden pearl of Planaxis, and something you definitely do not want to miss.

Time to contact the homefront? For just that purpose, Hallmark has created a post office like you’ve never seen before. If there’s one word to describe it, it would be love! Esmee: “We hand out postcards to the People of Tomorrow and they can write a sweet or funny message on it, whatever they like.” After that you can drop your card in the mailbox, and it will be shipped to your loved ones worldwide. “We’re actually sending all your love!” Good to know: sending love is free, no matter the destination! Straetis is sending a card to his uncle in Greece. “I wanted There are many stages to be discovered at Tomorrowland – and you may not him to be here, but he couldn’t make it. have found the smallest one yet. Next to the lake, hidden inside a robust-looking He’s 75, you see...” After a laugh, he building, Jupiler created The Brewery. Shifting gears, simmering kettles and continues: “But he acts like 30!” steam machines adorn its walls, making clear that this is a place where beer flows as freely as the waters of Planaxis. The stage inside is crowded, captivating, and covered in elements that make you feel like you’re in the process of creating the perfect beer yourself. Sophie visited The Brewery with her British boyfriend and they both loved every drop of it. “Belgium’s beer is just as amazing as their festivals. In this place you can almost taste the music.”

Beer makes everything better

THE MUSIC NEVER STOPS

The sound of tomorrow

Summer in a glass

If there’s one place at Tomorrowland where you can actually taste the summer, it’s at the fountain-bar by Aperol. Surrounded by fresh oranges and flowers, skilled baristas create the characteristically cheerful orange drinks. “We have something extra this year,” one announces, “customers can create their own caps and sunglasses today.” At the bar, three girls from England are giggling. Chloe: “At first we wanted to customize them into something dirty, but we got cold feet.” The girls made the right decision, if you ask us. Chloe has ‘Live Today’ written on her accessory, and her two friends complete her look with the quotes ‘Love Tomorrow’ & ‘Unite Forever’ on their caps. You know what they say: it starts with Aperol Spritz!

At the Pepsi Max booth, young, talented DJs get to show off their skills. Downstairs, there is a game visitors can play where you can practise getting the beat right. The stakes are high, because the winner gets a free drink. But that’s not all: when you explore the site some more, you discover that there is a DJ booth at the top of the stairs, too. Here, would-be DJs can sign themselves up for a set of 15 minutes. Not only will they play for an audience, the whole set will be filmed and sent to them, too. So are you a talented DJ and do you want to play your music at Tomorrowland? Now is your time to shine! 13

For those of you that wish to stay on point music-wise 24/7, from the last beat resounding from the Mainstage to the very first bassdrum at the next Daybreak Session – this is your jam. Open your Spotify app, search for Tomorrowland, and you’ll find yourself a whole set of exquisite playlists of various genres and styles to break the silence. Beat up your campsite with some stage-host playlist by the likes of Abracadabra, ANTS, and Monstercat, and dive into the tracks that the artists playing here want you to hear. There are no less than 13 playlist ready and waiting for you to play as loud as you possibly can.

She’s opened up for Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Nas, and J-Cole, but now she’s running a show of her own. Antwerp-born Coely has become the rising star of Belgian hip-hop over the years, and now she’s ready to take over Tomorrowland from the festival’s brand-new hip-hop stage. Going

from modern beats to heartfelt soulful productions, her music is hip-hop 2.0, designed to move people’s minds and hips. Right before her show at the Organ of Harmony, she gives us an insight into her state of mind. Coely is just as excited as the rest of us to start this new chapter in Tomorrowland history.

How are you feeling today? “Oh man, I am so excited for today’s show. Ever since I learned that I would get to perform at Tomorrowland I knew that it just had to be spot on. We have to hit the bullseye.” Never mind the nerves – is the fairytale atmosphere of Tomorrowland something that inspires you? “I do feel like a little princess here (laughs). I mean, the whole vibe you get here is beyond amazing. It’s like you’re walking around in one huge circus tent. It does stimulate your phantasy. There’s people dressed up as all sorts of creatures, you see unicorns all around, people can really let themselves go this weekend. If there’s one place on this Earth where you can be yourself, it’s Tomorrowland. There’s no escaping that feeling of freedom here, and we should let the uniqueness of it sink in. The ‘Madness’ tagline shouldn’t be taken for granted. You better believe it: this is madness. This is Little Red Riding Hood and Alice in Wonderland mixed up into one big fat crazy world of its own.”

The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

This is so big that it’s a privilege to be a little part of it.

But isn’t this way beyond your usual habitat? “It is, in many ways, very different from the clubs and festivals I’m more used to playing. When you get to play something the size and prestige of Tomorrowland, though, all those differences just fade away. I mean: people from all over the world are looking forward to this a year or longer before it starts. This is so big that it’s a privilege to be a little part of it.” And what about the music? Is Tomorrowland your jam? “It depends, from song to song. Musically speaking, I’m pretty much open to anything, so it comes down to whether I feel the beat or not. The beat is always key. If you can vibe and dance to it - sign me up!” It’s the first time Tomorrowland has an actual full-blown hip-hop stage. What’s your take? Why now? What changed? “I have no idea, to be honest (laughs)!” You must have some clue. The Belgian hip-hop scene is booming like never before, with artists like DVTCH Norris, Stikstof, Roméo Elvis - and yourself, of course. Have the stars finally aligned for Belgian hip-hop? “Belgium’s finally ready for some really good hip-hop. Kids these days don’t want to listen to anything besides hip-hop. It all fits perfectly, really. Every couple of years, one genre or other blows up like there’s no tomorrow, and hip-hop’s time has finally come. There’s so many great artists out there that at this point, there’s no surpassing this music. It’s music that taps into the lifestyle and the worldview of young people, music that makes them feel good, there’s no denying or ignoring that. Back in the day when DMX started doing big rock festivals, everybody hit the moshpit on his rhymes, which was a first

But regardless of what happens in the future of music: Coely will always be Coely. “Damn right. I’ll keep doing my thing regardless of everyone else. I know what I’m good at, but I’ll also keep trying out new stuff and looking for new directions. I have the freedom to do something different within my own world. Take my song ‘Can’t Get Away’ with Polar Youth, for instance. It’s fair to say that that song is outside of my main sound.”

Would you rather be in the studio or on stage? “Being in the studio isn’t always a walk in the park, it’s not always as fun as some might think it is. It’s a hard day’s work. You’re constantly going through new sounds, new samples, new beats, trying to find perfection. You’re doing everything over and over again until you get it right. But being on stage is something else, I can tell you. That’s my stage, I’m the boss right there. It’s like being the chef at a restaurant: you want nothing more than to have all your guests go home with a full stomach after an amazing night. I have to give those people something that they will remember, something they can take home with them and can hang on to forever. I love to perform, because it’s an experience you share with everybody. There’s no switch to be flipped, no act to be put up, when I walk onto the stage the raw energy just flows automatically. Just: bang!”

How do you come to decide what a song will be about? “Again: it’s all about feeling the beat. When I feel the beat, I start singing immediately. It may be just phonetically or without using any words at first, but that’s where it all starts. When I feel the beat I lay my rhymes upon it. The beat’s born before the lyrics are.”

You work with producers, but it seems like you’re a producer yourself all the same. “Maybe I am, partially. I mean: in the end I have to perform the songs, so it’s my responsibility to make sure that the tracks I put out slay like no other. But it’s a team effort between me and my three producers. We write and produce everything together – credits to them.”

Does fitting words onto the beat come before telling a story in your songs? “You can’t have one without the other, man. You’ll start writing your words to the beat, but then it becomes a process where both the subject you’re writing about as well as the beat can change along the way. The embryonic stage of a song often gets crafted into something completely different. ‘Celebrate’ sounded way different than what it eventually came to be. It was slower and harder, heavier, and it took a while for it to take the shape it has today.”

You did it yourself and you’ve always been a natural, that’s for sure. But how important was it to surround yourself with the right people? “You can’t even start to imagine how important that part is in the story of Coely. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here today, and I mean that. I’m not the only hip-hop singer around. I’ve been lucky. We’ve worked hard together, and after six years we’re still here and better than ever. Now we’re scoring silver and gold records. Wow! I didn’t see that coming. But we did all we could to get here, and we’ll work even harder to stay.”

for hip-hop in general. People went mental to rap music instead of guitars – imagine what it must’ve been like to see that happen. Well, it’s happening again, right here, right now. Maybe in a couple of years we’ll see indie rock or really hardcore hip-hop rising up again, but that’s hard to predict. We’ll see what happens. There’ll be new Kendricks and new Dr. Dres, music will keep on reinventing itself.”

MAYOR FOR A DAY What if you’re just casually strolling around the Holy Grounds, and all of a sudden, you are titled ‘Mayor of Planaxis’? The power that comes with that position knows no bounds. Not only do you come into possession of the magical livery collar – from now on, it’s going to be your way or the highway. The lucky birds below felt the magic of the collar and happily share their playground plans with you. Jarryd There is no doubt Jarryd from Australia would be a good candidate. In his ‘Mayor of the Minute’ speech he pleads for nothing more than what Planaxis already is.

Kayne Relevant experience can be helpful. Captain Kayne from Australia would happily leave his current position to become Planaxis’ leader. His thoughts? Obviously, a free flow of water for all. Miss T.

Carolina

T., looking abosolutely stunning wearing the collar, would only have one wish. “I would just invite all my friends from Hong Kong over to share this experience this with me.”

Carolina from Spain would certainly put her reign to good use. “The bigger Tomorrowland becomes, the better. I would have all my friends over, first of all, and then the rest of the world!”

Steve When running for the position, Steve from England would keep his friends close before all else. “When you experience together, you learn together, and therefore you can change together.”

Mr. X This mysterious Spanish-speaking mister would certainly apply for the position, although he kept his plans veiled in secrets, too. Franzi Lovely Franzi from Germany would continue to keep the regency the way it is. “Even if I had the ability to change something, I just wouldn’t. It’s already a perfect world!”

LOVE TOMORROW values for a better future Responsibility, nature, innovation, health and respect. These are the five core values of Love Tomorrow, and they all tie together into creating a better world. It works as follows: as People of Tomorrow, we hold responsibility by taking positive actions towards the future. Nature is where it all begins. The Holy Grounds of Tomorrowland are part of a natural environment. It is our duty to treat it with kindness. Lots of successful and fun initiatives are happening at Tomorrowland and DreamVille in that regard, and many of them are all about innovation. Sharing ideas and collaborating creates the most sustainable future, and without innovation there is no future. One great example is the WaterVille Project, which you can read about today. Besides taking care of our environment, it is also important to take care of the mental wellbeing and health of yourself and others. The circle ends with respect; respect yourself, Mother Nature and your fellow creatures. If we live by these five values, we are ready for a better Tomorrow together.

WAT E RV I L L E : S AV I N G WAT E R FO R P L A N A X I S What would the Story of Planaxis be without water? Water is very precious, and it’s important not to waste a drop. A few years ago, Love Tomorrow launched a research project called WaterVille. With this innovative project, measurements were taken on how much water the visitors of Dreamville used when showering. Smart meters monitored water consumption in some of the showers, and certain showers were equipped with systems that influenced the shower time of the visitor in a subtle way. Different techniques were tried out: some showers had a light that slowly faded out, others had communication about water consumption or a pulsation in the water. The project has returned this year, and wants to inspire the People of Tomorrow to take shorter showers. Do sensors that explain how much water you consume make you take shorter showers? We’ll find out!

C A M P 2 C A M P: C I RC U L A R C A M P I N G Yesterday Love Tomorrow highlighted renting CAMP2CAMP packages from the camping gear that was left behind last year. Today we focus on the social benefits. CAMP2CAMP does not just provide camping gear to the People of Tomorrow who come in from all around the world; the local community also benefits from the project. Love Tomorrow is building a CAMP2CAMP ‘sharing economy’ rental service together with re-use shop Ecoso. Local members of CAMP2CAMP will be able to rent camping gear for holidays as well as for their summer BBQs in the garden. Those in need can also rent camping equipment; people in vulnerable positions, for example, or youth organizations. They will be provided with tents and other camping gear for next to no cost. In this way, CAMP2CAMP adds social value and makes festival camping a circular activity. Joining the CAMP2CAMP-project means caring for nature and caring for all People of Tomorrow.

TACOS

03

If you can’t spot these nachos on the menu at the Taco stand close to the Mainstage, it’s because they were actually invented on the spot. Bieger Jonckheere explains that he originally served a chili con carne. “However, with a growing demand for meatless alternatives, people wanted us to improvise. And that’s when we came up with this nacho-ish dish.”

01 S w e et D R E A M S For those with a sweet tooth, Sweet Dreams by Roger van Damme is an ideal location to indulge. The product range varies from Belgian waffles to ice cream to cotton candy, and it all tastes just as amazing as it looks. As chef Roger van Damme puts it himself: “It’s fresh, it’s sweet, it’s happiness!”

04 LOVE TOMORROW KEBAB

02

Love Tomorrow Kebab is a veganfriendly alternative to this popular snack. Greenway’s chef, Paul Florizoone, explains that the wrap is a mix of a tortilla wrap, lettuce, cabbage, soy/wheat-based kebab and loads of different spices. “With our products, we want to show everyone that plant-based food can be just as good as eating meat. We really believe this is the future.”

LO S CO CO S Coconuts are a delicious source of hydration, so with temperatures rising, why not have some? Los Cocos is a concept by Andy Selleslagh and focuses on good nutrition. “We only work with pure ingredients,” he says, “that’s why it would be a waste if we used plastic drinking straws.” Instead, Los Cocos uses edible straws in different flavours!

My heart is

in Havana It’s the only Cuban rum still made in Cuba, and that is what they’re proud of. Alexander, host of the Havana House behind the Mainstage: “We wanted to create a vibe that is similar to sunset on a rooftop in Cuba.” Larissa, sipping on a cocktail, sure felt that vibe. “It’s so nice to be here, it really became a point for us to meet with friends and have some drinks before we go to the Mainstage.” Alexander told us that the brand is expanding through music. “Hip-hop and its easy street culture are such a good match for us. We also work with young, upcoming faces like Caballero & Jeanjass.” These rappers from Brussels will make an appearance at the House this weekend. And there’s more to enjoy: from 13:00 to 18:00 you can decorate your own tote bag, so come and experience those Cuban vibes!

MORE THAN A MEMORY It’s not just what you wear that’s relevant, what your phone wears is important, too. Combine that fact with your secret desire to create an everlasting memory, and a new idea is born. The SMTH Phonecover boys will personalize your Tomorrowland cover just the way you want them to. They use the latest 3-D techniques, which keeps the look natural and authentic. “Ecology goes hand in hand with our vision. With the products that SMTH Smooth offers, we want to bring the world back into contact with nature”, manager Kristof van Thielen says as his business partner Dimi Moreels works on another, unique phone case. “We try to do this in a fashionable and trendy way. That is why we aim to offer only ecological and sustainable products to the people of Tomorrow.” Interested in getting your own design? The Phonecover stand is located close to the DreamVille entrance to Tomorrowland.

The best tea you ever had Surrounded by flowers, a fairytale setting is created at The Lipton Bridge House. At the back, an enthusiastic DJ spins summer vibes. The dancefloor is called the T-Room, and people sure are enjoying their tea… Lipton has created wonderful cocktails using their Ice Teas! “These cocktails aren’t like anything I’ve ever tasted before,” says Sophie, who certainly looks like she’s enjoying hers. You can pick six different cocktails here, but that doesn’t mean you have to choose only one, of course. Also: don’t forget to get social and use #liptonbettertogether. All the pictures uploaded to Instagram with this tag will be published at the photo wall! Go and take a look for yourself; your photo will also be printed for you to keep.

SELFIES FROM AFAR The overwhelming Freedom stage has an enchanting appearance many would like to capture in a picture. After all, a picture says more than a thousand words. Amanda: “We came all the way from New York and really would like to share all the happiness we feel over here.” There is no better way to capture all the beauty of Tomorrowland than by Budweiser’s panoramic picture booth. Right in front of the Freedom stage, people step onto a platform. A hundred meters down the grounds, a camera has been installed which will take shots from far, far away. This enormous panoramic picture is converted into a video which starts with you and your friends and zooms out to a point where you can see the entire festival grounds. Your picture will be emailed to you after the festival; upload it with #BUDxTOMORROWLAND to join your fellow revellers in the experience! 23

CAGE

For those who love the harder styles ofdance music – and we know there are plenty of you at Tomorrowland! – Q-dance is heaven (or hell in a good way, whichever you prefer). No matter whether you like hardstyle, hardtrance or hardcore, you’ll find your favourite distorted beats right here. As a matter of course, this year’s line-up is heavy, with highlights being hardstyle hit machine Wildstylez, Slam FM radio show host and Defqon.1 veteran Brennan Heart, and hard-hitter Lindsay van der Eng a.k.a. Korsakoff. If your urge to jump is uncontrollable, you know where to get to get your fix.

If you happen to be one of the older ravers in Boom, and especially if you’re carrying a Belgian or Dutch flag, you may very well be acquainted with the pride of this country’s hardcore, rave and trance scenes: Bonzai Records. The iconic Bonzai tree is something of an institute, with the first records dating from as early as 1993. Representing the label’s melodic sound this year are absolute party animal Franky Jones, German trance legend Olivier Lieb, and of course one of Belgium’s biggest, former La Rocca and Cherrymoon resident Yves DeRuyter.

An event of pure bliss where everyone smiles, hugs and throws their hands in the air to classic house & disco: that’s Glitterbox. A deep love for the original club culture of New York City shines through everything Defected Records boss Simon Dunmore puts together at his sparkly events. From Dunmore’s own club in Ibiza to Ministry of Sound in London and various other venues in the UK, Glitterbox have had the very best of NYC’s original house DJs headlining their bills. Naturally, the Glitterbox stage at Tomorrowland 2018 doesn’t disappoint: Todd Terry (not to be confused with Todd Terje!) and Roger Sanchez play alongside Mr. Dunmore himself.

KOZZMOZZ When you think Belgium and techno, you think Kozzmozz. If you’re a local or following the minutiae of the techno scene on a daily basis, that is – Kozzmozz usually holds pretty underground events in and around Ghent exclusively. At Tomorrowland, that changes: their fairytale-like stage is open to all and forms the perfect introduction to everything the party crew stands for. It features topnotch sets by Marcel Dettmann b2b Ben Klock, MULTIPLES (Speedy J & Surgeon live), Monika Kruse b2b Anna, as well as one by longtime Kozzmozz residents Spacid and Pilose. Yves Debouvry, a.k.a. DJ Spacid, tells us about the organisation’s very beginning in Ghent, and about their Tomorrowland hosting.

A TECHNO UNIVERSE

“The challenge is to first get the heads moving, then the feet, and finally the whole body.”

What was the original idea behind Kozzmozz when it started in the nineties? “The time was ripe for it. There weren’t any techno parties in Ghent, but the amount of great techno coming out was tremendous. And the local crowd seemed to be ready for it.” The very first Kozzmozz event was a boat rave – will we be seeing some of the same original spirit at your Tomorrowland hosting? “That’s a tough one! The scene was much more underground and niche back when Kozzmozz started. The audience was limited. Our parties aren’t so small anymore today, but a festival requires a different approach, a different sound – it’s just another thing out in the open air. On the one hand, you want to play a little harder and more energetic, yet we also want to play music that’s in harmony with the friendly, forestlike environment of our stage. It’s a magical setting, and you really want to do justice to that when you select your records.

The Vooruit venue in Ghent has always played a major role in the existence of Kozzmozz. Can you say something about what the venue means to you guys? “We play Vooruit very often. It’s an art deco monument, and one of the first venues in Belgium to receive that status. Other venues in Ghent are also dear to us though, mostly industrial places. The location can be anything, really, as long as the energy in the room fits techno. The atmosphere between the audience and DJ needs to be right.” What was it like to grow up in the city that was home to possibly the most important techno and rave label in Europe, R&S Records? “I didn’t grow up in Ghent, but moved there as a student. R&S left a big mark on the city’s scene, but it was bigger abroad than in Belgium, actually. The musical background of Belgium was inspiring in general, with Electronic Body Music and New Beat emerging just ahead of the rave and techno revolution. There was a famous club called Boccaccio where you could dance to these sounds. Ghent is a young, left-wing and open-minded city with a great party scene. You could say it’s like a small Berlin.”

26

You’ll be warming up the Kozzmozz stage together with Pilose. Do you like playing early sets? What makes them unique for you? “You can build it all up and that suits me. I actually prefer to play opening sets. When you play prime-time, everything has to be banging and everybody’s in the mood already, so it’s relatively easy. When you’re the first one to come on, the challenge is to first get the heads moving, then the feet, and finally the whole body. It’s a dance of seduction, really, between the DJ and the audience. I love it.” What makes the programming of the Kozzmozz stage so special this year? “We have Berghain residents Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock playing together this year. The last time that happened at Tomorrowland was back in 2010. Klock and Dettmann really caused a revolution in techno about fifteen years ago; they slowed the sound down and gave it a rounder feel. We’ve actually decided to have all DJs play back to back this year, making for a unique experience. You may have seen Dettmann or Klock solo, but seeing them together, that’s really something else.”

TECHNO’S GREATEST EXPONENTS “So if you use the old rock band anology, I play the bass and drums and Anthony is the guitarist as well as the lead singer.”

MULTIPLES

It’s not easy to think of an electronic artist with a more dazzling career than Rotterdam’s Speedy J, who has been around from the inception of the early rave scene, producing classic evergreens and releasing cutting-edge electronica on Warp Records alongside Aphex Twin and Autechre. Today, he is still pushing the boundaries of techno, remaining as forward-thinking as he ever was. As one of the key figures playing the Kozzmozz stage, he talks about his newest brainchild, MULTIPLES, which is a joint effort with UK techno producer Surgeon.

“No creative limitations, just pure live improvisation!" is what you tweeted last year when you first announced the MULTIPLES project with Surgeon. How did the project come about? “We’ve known each other for a long time, and without realizing it, we were both on each other’s wish list for collaborative projects. So when we spoke about it, we decided to come together in my studio and to see what would happen when we’d merge our setups. It all happened quite naturally - we really took the time to listen and let our collaborative sound develop. We prepared things to a certain extent, but the element of improvisation is very important.”

How do you decide who does what with a live electronic performance like yours? “It’s always smart to carefully divide the roles between each other. I play with four decks and a drum machine and I use music made by others, but only in short loops. Anthony (Surgeon’s given name) loves playing his modular synthesizer. So if you use the old rock band analogy, I play the bass and drums and Anthony is the guitarist as well as the lead singer.”

27

What did you admire in Surgeon’s music? Why did you want to work with him? “Anthony really is one of my favourite producers and he has been since the beginning. He’s got a very unique sound and view on things. I find artists interesting as soon as they don’t sound like anything else.”

The music you make seems to be designed to play out loud and in front of large audiences. So what’s it like when you work on something so banging just with the two of you in the studio? “On stage, you don’t have time to communicate, and that’s why it’s a good idea to rehearse a little in the studio. Whenever the sound moves into a certain direction, you can discuss it afterwards. I say ‘discuss’, but you can’t really talk about techno using words, I think, or only to a certain extent. It’s very intuitive. The only type of thing I say to Anthony whilst performing is when I plan to change the rhythm or something like that. When I switch from a four to the floor pattern to a broken beat, I let him know so he can anticipate, but it’s all very minimal.”

You’ve collaborated with a wide range of producers, from the British experimentalist Mike Paradinas to techno producer Chris Liebing. Where does the urge to collaborate come from? “These projects usually happen spontaneously. The great thing about them is that you learn to look at your own work differently. What we do as artists is very specific. When do you meet someone who has been producing electronic music for thirty years, too? It’s refreshing to speak to someone on the same wavelength.” The music you’re creating with Surgeon is fast, dark and without compromise. The audience on Tomorrowland is colourful and maybe a little happier than you’re used to. Does that effect your set? “You say a happy audience, but people can handle more than you think. Like with DJ’ing, you always have to try before you draw your conclusions. You usually find out what works within the first ten minutes or so. So far, MULTIPLES has worked without fail.”

FIRAGA FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY PSYGATHERING (THE ARCH) | 20h00 - 21h30 Psytrance DJ Firaga (1984), real name Michael Kiriloff, was born in Venezuela, but moved to Belgium as a toddler. Although his father is Dutch, he is descended – the last name is a tell – from Russian nobility. By everyday profession, by the way, he is an antiquarian: he trades in Chinese porcelain and collects Russian icons. But Firaga loves the apparent contradictions and paradoxes of life and has been organizing psytrance parties since he was 18 years old, too. This year, for the 11th time in a row, he's hosting the PsyGathering stage at Tomorrowland, which has grown considerably in size, as the popularity of the genre is increasing. Hey, Firaga! Please tell us more about you and your scene... Psytrance originated from the party scene in the hippie pilgrimage destination Goa, India, in the mid-‘90s. Is the scene still influenced by its origins? “We're all still kind of hippie-like. You wouldn't be able to tell if you saw me walking down the street – I often wear button-up shirts and dress shoes. But in the psytrance scene, it doesn't matter how you look or what you do. Everyone's welcome, as long as you appreciate our culture. We're still idealists. PLUR (a set of values that is associated with the dance scene meaning Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) is still very important to us. There's just no fighting in psytrance. On the other hand, that spiritual part of Goa trance is ridiculous. I am too much of an atheist for that. For me, psytrance is about compassion and humanity. Religion and spirituality have done the worst for mankind. Then again, we’ve had to deal with other problems related to our origins as well. In the past, lots of psytrance events were shut down by the police. We had to deal with so many prejudices. People thought

we were extreme trippers. That's just not true. At a certain point, in 2006, the police called me. They'd visited some of the parties I organized undercover. Yes, some drugs were taken, they concluded. But no more than in any other dance scene. 'Michael' they said, 'we have nothing to worry about.' You know, we are just soft people who love hard music. Initially - before it got commercial - Goa trance had the same intention.”

"We are just soft people who love hard music" How did psytrance change over the years? “Psytrance went through an all-time low between 2010 and 2014. From parties of 3,000 people we went to parties of 600 people. The scene disappeared almost completely. I don't know exactly what happened; I think it was partly because the old guard was now in their thirties and forties. They had children, preferred to stay at home. Now, we're suddenly on the rise again. If you look at Brazil, Japan, France, Germany, the United States and even China, you will see the popularity of psytrance increasing massively. The old school DJs do have a different standard in terms of production than the new ones, though. EDM productions are starting to tend more and more towards psytrance. DJ duo Vini Vici even came out with a collaboration with Armin van Buuren. It seems Armin’s also thinking, 'This is the new thing!' Perhaps because of this trend, BPM's in EDM are going up while BPM's of new psytrance productions are going down. Nowadays, psytrance tracks are produced at 140-142 BPM, slower than in the old days. Some are mixing their productions with drum & bass to go more mainstream. I still notice that if your melodies are spot on, 145 BPM lets the audience explode.” 29

Who are some of the new names to keep an eye on? “Guys like WHITENO1SE and WAIO. Mark my words, they're going to go through the roof. Now that the scene is getting bigger, so many artists can surprise the people.” PsyGathering is hosting a stage at Tomorrowland for the 11th year in a row. How did your stage evolve along with the festival? "Twelve years ago, I came to Tomorrowland as a visitor. I bet a case of beer with a mate on coming back the following year. Not as a visitor, but as a DJ. I won the bet and he owed me that case of beer. When the time was there, I had to drink a bottle of champagne before I had enough courage to go on stage. But I must have done something right, because I’ve been hosting the festival's psytrance stage ever since. I remember I built part of my own stage the first time, driving around with blocks and building the roof myself. It was just wonderful. Now, when I arrive everything is arranged. Tomorrowland's productions are simply the best in the world. Last year I had a small indoor stage. Big names were on the line-up, though. But those artists didn't want to come back. 'Yes, we're talking about Tomorrowland, but we can play at other festivals in front of 2,000 people,' they said. So I spoke to the organization, and this year they gave us a much bigger stage. They even programmed Vini Vici on the Mainstage. Psytrance is breaking through and Tomorrowland responds wisely to that. There's just so much more to come..." Like what? “Well, we will have a PsyGathering at IKON, Antwerp, on the 6th of October. And a few days before that, I am launching a PsyGathering record label, too. But first, let’s see how we do at the Arch this weekend!”

Fatboy Slim Axtone | 22h30 - 00h00 Have you heard of Big Beat? It's Fatboy Slim's very own genre, mixing techno, rock and rhythm & blues. The English producer has been around since 1981, when he learned to play bass guitar in his friend's band and accidentally scored a hit. He started producing in 1988 and remixed tracks by The Beastie Boys ('Fight for Your Right to Party') and Wildchild. Artists such as Madonna and U2 have since asked him to produce for them. 'Rockafeller Skank', which sports the world-famous line 'Right about now, the funk soul brother', is just one of many examples why it's impossible to stand still during Fatboy Slim's set.

Alison Wonderland Mainstage | 16h50 - 17h50

Who says fairytale characters behind the decks can't kick some serious ass? We don't! Alison Wonderland is the alias of Australian 30-something Alexandra Sholler, proudly ranking #89 in DJ Mag's DJ Top 100 in 2017. She started out remixing songs such as Ladyhawke's 'Blue Eyes' in 2012, for which effort she received critical acclaim. Alison then released her debut single in 2013 and her debut album, 'Run', in 2015. It was rated Gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Her powerful vocals along with her mix of EDM, electropop and hiphop provide for a unique, contagious sound. This might be due to her intensive musical training: from a young age, this true stage animal of EDM was taught to master both classical cello and bass guitar. Alison Wonderland is also a talented vocalist. Her vocals are prominent in her songs, giving her remixes as well as her original productions a vibe of their own. On stage, the energetic Aussie puts on a wild party of epic proportions. Her performance in her latest video for the track 'Happy Place' gives an accurate impression of that talent for showmanship. Her slot at Tomorrowland is not to be missed!

Having worked with great artists such as Tiësto, Fedde le Grand, Afrojack and Avicii, and continuing to tour the world, his reputation is nothing but stellar. One of his latest remixes is 'So Far Away' by Martin Garrix and David Guetta. Striving to bring progressive back, Nicky Romero is bound to make the Mainstage explode. His latest release, a collaboration with American songstress ROZES, reminds him of when he just got started with his career. Catch the chance to see him take a trip down memory lane!

Starting out in 2002 producing hardcore and hardtrance, Brennan Heart's sound eventually evolved into hardstyle. The Dutch producer was part of the duo Brennan&Heart with DJ Thera until they split up in 2005. He released his first solo album in 2009. Yves Deruyter is a bit of a Belgian phenomenon: he's been around since 1985. His single 'Rave City' was a smash hit and became an instant classic when it came out in the late 90's. In 1997, he released 'The Rebel', which became even more successful and led him to release his first album, 'D-Album'. Over the decades he has played many major festivals such as Trance Energy and Love Parade. His remix of Underworld's classic 'Born Slippy' is another memorable achievement. It’s hard to overstate Deruyter's influence on today’s house, trance and techno, and he has inspired whole new generations.

Dua Lipa Tomorrowland is more than just one thing, it is everything. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it. Besides many DJ sets, you can see some of your very favourite artists perform live. Raised in London by a musical family – her father being the Albanian singer Dukagjin Lipa – Dua

of A&R people across various major labels. The rest is history, as they say, even though things are still moving forward very fast. It seems that every new song is now breaking the records of the previous ones, with billions of streams across various online platforms. Lipa scored a number one hit with ‘Be the One’ as far back as 2015, followed by another one with ‘New Rules’ (her first chart topper in the UK), whilst her current collab ‘One Kiss’ (with Calvin Harris) is an even bigger success. Catch this diva on stage and make your underwater dream complete!
