The Key TO Happiness

PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

ANOTHER CHAPTER HAS BEEN WRITTEN! The purity of your hearts and souls led you here, and together, you unlocked happiness! For several millennia, mankind has thought that what happens in fairytales stays in fairytales. And in just ten short years Tomorrowland has proven mankind wrong. The past weekend went to show how right here, each year, a mythical story comes to life, populated not (only) by fantastic creatures, but by real people. By you. With your endless enthusiasm, you breathed life into the tale of the Key to Happiness. Things that had always been thought to belong firmly in the realm of fantasy happened before our eyes.

Enormous flowers formed benches to sit on, a wooden bridge winded through forested areas and across a lake, an enormous mass congregated and shared its love for the artists before them. At night, colours flew into the sky in patterns that made you question if you weren’t dreaming. But no. All of this was real. And it was thanks to you, the People of Tomorrow. Remember the legend you witnessed, foster the feeling it gave you, and tell everyone the truth you’ve found: that happiness is in your heart, too. See you next year.

You came, you loved, you raved Today, you showed the world how to make an amazing weekend into a legendary memory always to hold on to. The goal was to outperform the 9 generations before you and you didn’t let down. Today was the icing on the cake! Sadly, we’re at the end of another epic Tomorrowland weekend, but on the bright side we’re sure that you gathered quite a

few musical memories that will last a lifetime. Maybe, who knows, a shared passion for a DJ even made you meet new friends or girlfriends that will help you walk through life and make your wildest dreams come true. Hawtin, Derrick Carter and Paul van Dyk on the other stages: you gave the artists you all. You all went crazy and you have been doing so for four days now. You impressed us once again, as even in the blistering heat, your hands went way up high. And for that, Tomorrowland loves you. Thanks for loving it back. Peace, love, rave.

TALK OF TOMORROW Walking back towards the campsite after Steve Aoki and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike finished their 3 Are Legend set, we can’t help but overhear the conversation Tommy Hackalot and Luke Airwalker from Australia are having.

On this day, a decade ago...

“I’m a Q-boy ‘till I die, a Q-boy ‘till I die,” Tommy shouts, pounding his fists in the air and swinging his Nike Airs from left to right. “Yeah, you might say that,” Luke remarks, “but I saw you going just as mental to Netsky’s set. That’s something different from those pounding salvos at the Q-dance stage!” These guys… They traveled all the way from Australia to undergo a full-on weekend of madness filled up with impressive hardstyle DJ sets, only to discover that they like house music, drum ‘n bass and

trance just as much. “And why shouldn’t I?” Tommy asks. “After all, what Netsky did was beyond any genre. He managed to unite people, styles and emotions. That was one scorching bombardment of drums and bass and angelic vocals.” Their Tomorrowland weekend is over now, and they’re already in nostalgic mode. But besides the music, they took part in the side entertainment and enjoyed the food as well. “Remember those burgers from De Burgerij? Maybe we should make them a proposition for

some kind of franchising in Australia. I could eat those burgers all day, every day!” Luke says. “Yeah, and that nice piece of meat we got served at the Steak House – I dare say that that was the very best tenderloin I have ever had in my life!” Tommy adds. If it were up to these guys, Tomorrowland would be held every single weekend. Before their trip to the festival they promised each other to have the best time they ever had in their lives. A promise they kept quite closely. The rave is strong in these two.

The first ever edition of Tomorrowland was held! Read the entire History of Tomorrow from page 29 onwards.

THE BEST OF DREAMVILLE Ah, DreamVille, how we’ll remember you. Blue skies, green lush fields filled with beautiful men and women, a friendly vibe. Shelter at night, our basecamp during the day, our home away from home at all times. You took care of us when we came back in shambles after a hard of dancing. You provided us with water, food, all the basics you need to survive in the land of Tomorrow. You were not merely a campsite, but a city of our own. Including friendly neighbors, exciting new places

To DreamVille, to its wonderful people, to the crew and especially to ourselves. Because a city is only as good as its inhabitants. When traveling home, wherever that may be, we take DreamVille with us in our hearts. Let’s spread the love we shared this weekend with the world!

The People of

Ahmed (20), Sri Lanka. When Ahmed was 16 years old, he bought a chicken. He now owns a thousand of them. With the money he makes he takes care of his family. He also bought himself a smartphone, and the internet has opened up an entirely new universe for him. In about 4 years he plans to marry his girlfriend, but until that time has come the only thing he wants to do is dance at Tomorrowland.

The stories behind the fairytale

Elisabeth (35), USA. Elisabeth Dorothy is mom to three children and lives in the northwest of the United States. She makes beautiful drawings and jewelry, while her husband’s trying hard to land a full-time job. Even though the family has a sober financial situation, Elisabeth takes to the streets often to spread the idea of happiness as found at Tomorrowland.

Tomorrow

The fairytale that is Tomorrowland welcomes people from all walks of life to participate in what has become way more than just a festival. Hundreds of thousands strong, you descend upon Belgium every year to celebrate love, life, friendship and music. Guided by 400 of the world’s most renowned artists, together you give shape to the indefinable feeling of being one through music. During this weekend, you form a universe of your own, filled with light, friends and passion. But who are you? Where do you come from? What has brought you to Tomorrowland? This summer Belgian national television station VRT1 dives into the story of the People of Tomorrow in search of answers. Over the past months thousands have submitted their own personal story through peopleoftomorrow.com. They were beautiful, moving, funny and unique in every way. Out of all those submissions 200 were chosen to represent the People of Tomorrow, and out of those, 9 got picked to tell their story on national television. They are people just like you, die-hard fans of Tomorrowland with totally different origins and a shared passion for music. Hailing from Colombia, Sri Lanka, Schotland, Australia, Kenya, the US, South Africa, Kosovo and Belgium, they were visited by a film crew at home. The results are 9 wonderful, intimate portraits of equally wonderful people. What makes them who they are? What role does Tomorrowland play in their lives? Next to being interviewed at home, they were given their own cameras to document the whole Tomorrowland adventure from start to finish. They taped the packing of their suitcases, the planning of the trip itself, the nerves the night before. And then: their actual arrival at the festival, the dancing, laughing, sleeping, making friends, the trip back home, and life after Tomorrowland. All those precious moments, together with the material filmed earlier, will be made into a series of six episodes. These will be broadcasted on VRT1 starting October 1st 2014. Furthermore, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike take the cameras backstage during Tomorrowland, for a sneak peak into what it takes to put together such a fairytale. To the right, you can find six of the nine chosen. These are their stories, this is where they come from, and this why they are worthy of spreading Tomorrow’s message.

Lisza (29), Belgium. Lisza has been living in Kasterlee for 6 years now, together with her Belgian husband and daughter. She grew up in Sweden, adopted by a lovely family, and graduated as a Protestant priest and expert on beer (a ‘sommelier’). The group of friends she’ll be traveling with consists of 8 gay guys. Within that group, she’s known as ‘Zotte Helga’, which translates to something like ‘Crazy Helga’. In real life she’s president of the N-VA at Kasterlee, a local political party. Purity (25), Kenia. Purity lives with her 4 sisters at their parents’ house in Nairobi. Her father served in the army, her mom owns a fish store and she herself works at a bank. As a young, modern woman who grew up in a traditional and catholic family, she lives in a country torn apart by religious violence. Purity has never been to Europe before. Cameron (20), South Africa. Cameron is a young graphics designer living in Johannesburg. Three years ago he lost his dad, and because of this tremendous loss he started meditating. He calls himself a thinker, a philosopher, but one with a Tomorrowland obsession. Millie & Lola (32), Kosovo. As a teenager, Millie experienced the consequences of war herself. Today, she works for the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe). Lola is het partner in life and working as an activist for an LGBT rights organization. Life as a lesbian couple in a very religious country isn’t easy. The trip to Belgium with a passport from Kosovo isn’t either, but Lola is a die-hard Tomorrowland fan.

A Refreshing New Mix What’s better than electronic music? Electronic music mixed with refreshing cocktails. Tomorrowland and Smirnoff have teamed up for a brand new mix of the greatest cocktails that are Exclusively for Everybody at 5 bars around the Tomorrowland grounds. That means you were never far away from their three refreshingly delicious Smirnoff No. 21 signature cocktails. Back at home too, recreating them will be a tasty way to keep the weekend fun alive. However you mix things up though, please remember to drink responsibly.

ORIGINS FEVER TREE

Don’t just call a gin and tonic a run-of-the-mill long drink, because it is the perfect pick-me-up during a long day of shaking everything you’ve got at a festival. The gin and tonic – a gentleman’s and lady’s beverage, if you will – can be savoured as an aperitif to start off after the siesta or as a nightcap to round your evening off. Reason enough to dedicate specialized bars to the king of all cocktails! At the Origins Fevertrees, perfectly mixed GTs could be enjoyed all weekend. Cheers!

HEAD & SHOWERS Maes Belgian Beer Bar Belgian beer has a heritage unlike any other, which translates into exceptional beers and wonderful tastes. Belgian brewers bring seven centuries of brewing experience to the table. Does that mean Belgium has the best beer in the world? We’d like to think so. Maes, however, proved the point with their bar behind the mainstage. We hope you got to enjoy beer the Belgian way!

Showers turn out to be pretty handy at Tomorrowland year after year. Most of you took one in the morning for a fresh and fruity start of the day. Did you notice the shower curtains? They may be unsightly little things, but without them, taking a shower would be a rather awkward experience. Some of you might like that and choose to leave them all open, but most of you have probably appreciated your daily moment of me-time. Head & Shoulders was so kind to provide these shower curtains, to give you a little privacy. A big thanks goes out to them!

BRASIL’S BOOK OF WISDOM Spreading happiness, madness, love, unity and joy around the globe always has been the main goal of Tomorrowland. As its 10th anniversary comes to an end, Tomorrowland is proud to reveal an entirely new episode of the fairytale, besides TomorrowWorld Atlanta! On May 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2015, the festival lands in Itu, São Paulo, Brasil. For more information, go to tomorrowlandbrasil.com.

Belgian Beer Corner

A DAY FULL OF FLOWERS

When Belgian people do something, they do it right. That goes for throwing a party, making premium quality chocolate and of course for making great beer! The Belgian Beer Corner was a proud display of the many different brewed beverages produced in this great country. There was the strong-flavoured Duvel, which came in special limited Mini-edition. Did you try Hoegaarden, with a more mild and refreshing aftertaste? Furthermore there were a lot of special variations on the most popular drink in the world, often created in Belgian monasteries. Yes, even monks like to drink over here. Every single glass of this divine nectar got served the way it should be served, at the right temperature and in just the right shape of glass. ‘Cause if you drink beer, drink it the Belgian way: with your eyes closed and taste buds wide open. Cheers!

fusing art and

photography

Wim Tellier and Canon joined forces this weekend. They worked on two very special art projects, ‘fed by photography,’ as Tellier likes to call them. First off, every day, a special moment was announced at the mainstage to shoot a Unity Portrait. The goal: capture as much people as possible in one picture. Soon, the pictures will be online at tomorrowland.com for you to find and tag yourself and share the love. The other project was designed to give an organic motion art impression. This art piece is called ‘Floating Reflections’. Whoever went for a walk and crossed the One World bridge had a chance to meet Tellier’s lens and be a part of this project. He captured special moments around the bridge with his fish-eye lens, which were processed into floating art pieces during the night. The art piece grew every day, until about 80 floating pictures had been placed around the bridge. Here, the object was to give the People of Tomorrow the chance to see their own reflection in the water, bringing the most beautiful experiences back to life.

THANKS FOR READING Dear People of Tomorrow. On behalf of the entire Tomorrowland Today staff, thank you for sticking with us throughout the weekend. Your stories were all wonderful and it was an honour to write them down. Until next time!

ACCESS ALL AREAS This weekend the broadest range of dance music passed by on fifteen different stages in Boom. We list them one more time for you, because there’s a reasonable chance you didn’t catch everything with so many great things to see. At fifteen perfectly provided areas with beautifully decorated stages, Tomorrowland has tried to give you the weekend of your life. On behalf of all the artists, stagehands, technicians and promoters: thanks for dancing!

CARL COX & FRIENDS / SUPER YOU & ME / DAVE CLARKE The Opera stage was a tribute to the legendary Hans Zimmer, who composed the Tomorrowland Hymn that brought many to tears. It also looked the part. Carl Cox & Friends didn’t play classical music on Friday, they tore the stage apart with techno. Oh yes, oh yes, it was powerful. The next day the area was filled to the brim with superheroes. Superman, Batman and Spiderman headed what looked like the entire Marvel universe on the dancefloor. Today Dave Clarke, Paul Kalkbrenner and Green Velvet took it upon themselves to fill the arena one last time with the sweetest of tracks.

Blue Flame / B2B / Bakermat & Friends “How about we just – simple and easy – blow the roof off this tent?” is apparently what you thought while dancing to Blue Flame on Friday, B2B on Saturday and Bakermat & Friends on Sunday. Blue Flame invited DiMaro, Mystique and Neon to spread some R&B-flavoured house beats, while B2B went for a complete trance music takeover with Skazi, Astrix and Firaga. On Sunday upcoming superstar of the jazzy house scene Bakermat invited Alle Farben, Lexer and Tube & Berger to end the weekend in a relaxed fashion. For three days, the mirror tent’s myriads of dancing reflections were a sight to behold. WE PLAY HOUSE REC. / BONZAI / PROFOUND SOUNDS Looking out over one of the lakes, podium 3 varied more radically than most. We Play House Recordings took care of the line-up on Friday. They’re known for their straight-on house and disco music. Saturday had a more progressive taste. Bonzai Music have been active since the early 90’s and ou can still hear that in the authentic progressive music, so the more old-school orientated people had a great time here. Profound Sounds got the honour to provide the artists for the last day. These clubminded guys danced the floor to a relaxed ending.

DIM MAK / Q-dance / Legends of Trance Three major names filled the open-air stage next to the big pond. DIM MAK on Friday showed the progressive party mindset they’re famous for, with blasting sets by Yellow Claw, Coone and of course the big boss Steve Aoki. From start to finish, it was pure mayhem. That continued the next with Q-Dance, the worlds leading brand in harder styles. Harder, faster, louder was the philosophy. Something Angerfist, Frontliner and others lived up to big time. Legends of Trance took over on Sunday, with a marathon set by Markus Schulz and his friends. Time to close your eyes and drift away! RADIO ULTRA MODERN Radio Modern filled your hearts and souls with summer vibes at this year’s edition of Tomorrowland once again! They succeeded in transforming your favourite festival into an Ultra Modern Carnival. Radio Ultra Modern promised you nothing but the silliest and they delivered: a real treat featuring the cream of the crop of their signature DJs – spinning everything from deep house classics all the way to ABBA’s Dancing Queen – live shows, saucy dancers and a variety of other surprises that all came together in a fascinating mix of Ultra Modern and pure vintage. Radio Ultra Modern went all the way back to the future!

Winterclubbing / Woody Weekend / Coincidence What a rollercoaster this stage was this weekend! We went all the way from Winterclubbing with Dimitri Wouters, Funk D and Deve & Matizz to Woody Weekend with Commonphase, Thim and Luca Barassi & Fré and back to Coincedence with Tom Dazing, Trixy and Redhead. This stage was the Batcave of Tomorrowland and had all kinds of underground up and comers, as well as established names playing in the actual underground! For true music lovers this stage grew out to be a real delicacy and an absolute treat to discover the freshest sounds of the future. The future was happening… right beneath you! QULT / KetaLoco / Derrick Carter presents the Family & Friends The bamboo tarantula opposite the maze on top of the hill was made by local artist Jan Detavernier of baboom.be, and was the backdrop to three intimate raves over the weekend. On Friday, the QULT set up shop and converted new souls with resident ACTI and Tomorrowland regulars The Oddword. The day after KetaLoco hosted the area, with Eats Everything, Pleasurekraft and more. And pleasure it was! The last part of this trilogy was about Derrick Carter and the family & friends he brought along. It was a cozy bunch. DJ Sneak b2b with Mark Farina and Inland Knights made the crowd feel at home as well.

Cafeína / Full On / Age of Love This stage spread out like a beautiful flower in bloom, welcoming all to dance under its leaves. Cafeína showed the way on Friday by giving you artists like Roma, AN21 and Funkerman. The funk was plentiful that day. Grandmaster Ferry Corsten had the honour of occupying the flower on Saturday with his Full On concept. Amongst the talented artists were Sied van Riel, Marco V and Sick Individuals. At last the Age of Love commenced. The love was spread thick on Sunday, not only by Franky Jones and friends, but most definitely by the amazing people dancing in front of the stage.

I love the ‘90s / Kozzmozz / Forma.T Who doesn’t hanker back to the infamous 90s once in a while? If you do, I Love the ‘90s was the place to be on Friday. The enormous tent behind the mainstage was blasted with oldschool beats by Johan Gielen, Charlie Lownoise and Mental Theo. Those sounds were followed by the brute power of techno when Kozzmozz took over on Saturday with names such as Chris Liebing, the mesmerizing Ben Klock and the futuristic visions of Jeff Mills. The weekend was closed by Forma.T. It’s difficult to put a name to the sound of Forma.T, seeing as they brought along DJs with a variety of styles, from Skream to Kolombo.

Mad Decent / V-Sessions vs Doorn Records / Smash The House The Garden of Madness, connected to the mainland by the new bridge, got thrashed all weekend long. First by the twerking army of Diplo, along with DJ Snake, Zeds Dead and more. Mad Decent showed us once again we need drop that booty. V-Sessions teamed up with Doorn Records the day after, bringing you Sidney Samson, Bingo Players and the main men themselves: Yves V and Sander van Doorn. Smash the House topped it off with a day full of house-based goodness, provided by our own Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Wolfpack and the shuffling Redfoo. Party rocking all the way!

Trance-Addict / Star Warz presents Metalheadz / Pussylounge It was the first thing you heard on Friday, entering the festival on the DreamVille side: the Trance-Addicts! Their beautiful and out-of-thisworld melodies set the sunny mood for the rest of the day thanks to Paul Oakenfold, Team 140 and their beloved colleagues. Star Warz took over on Saturday, approaching their audience with big fat drum & bass. Eardrums were banged by Dillinja, Goldie ft. GQ, Lenzman and the rest. On the last day Pussy Lounge came to town! Freestyle all the way, not giving a damn about genres. Paul Elstak, Darkraver, Korsakoff and a bunch of happy-go-lucky party peeps raved their beautiful behinds off.

Paradise / Cocoon / Minus The weekend started off with probably the most perfect name a stage can have: Paradise. Surrounded by water the peninsula gave way to the sounds of Dixon and Art Department, invited by the famous Belgian club Café d’Anvers and Hot Creations, the label founded by Lee Foss and Jamie Jones. On Saturday, the stage came to life as Cocoon brought maestro Sven Väth and Seth Troxler. Talking about pioneers, Sunday was the day the minimal powerhouse Minus landed in Tomorrowland. Spearheaded by the boss, Richie Hawtin, Minus was once again a showcase of how less can be more.

Desperados It may have taken you a bit of time to locate the Desperados Club, hidden deep within Tomorrowland. But once you entered the tropically flavored tent, it was damn hard to leave. What it lacked in space, it made up big time in atmosphere! If dancing to FeestDJRuud made you thirsty, a cold can of Desperado wasn’t far away. Three days in a row, this little sanctuary welcomed ravers of all ages, and nationalities alike. These last few nights, being together with Foxy Lady & MC Elvee, Black Tropicals and Jacck the DJ, we’ll remember forever. Though it may be a bit fuzzy…

Lotto Dream Island Being a completely floating stage, the least you can say is that the Lotto Dream Island was making impressive waves this weekend. Next to the very promising South African Bridges for Music talent, DJ Siphe Tebeka, all kinds of upand-comers passed by. For instance there was Greg Bouvin and Steve Romani & The Addiction on Friday, Jacob Liedholm and Gregori Klosman and Reygel & Peri on Saturday while Sunday was closed down by Dave Lambert and Mr. Moustache vs Smith Davis. The mixture of pounding beats and a floor floating up and down proved to be a fertile soil for party magic.

Mainstage The mission was simple: unlock the doors to happiness and step into a magical world of mystical creatures, glorious sounds and a show that stimulates all of your senses into overdrive. Steve Angello! David Guetta! Armin van Buuren! Hardwell! Tiësto! Steve Aoki! Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike! Afrojack! Netsky! Skrillex! And many, many others. The arena in front of the mainstage was all yours this weekend and you threw yourselves at the feet of hundreds of salvos of pounding and mesmerizing beats. Only you, the People of Tomorrow, had the key in their hands and did you ever make complete and full use of it!

JULY 20TH 2014 The last of something usually means a heartache, the realization that it all will be over soon. But as the final stage of your search for happiness commenced, these feelings of melancholy instantly got replaced by joy and excitement. Why sob around if Steve Aoki is playing? Why be sad when you can dance to David Guetta? Tomorrowland looked as magnificent as ever, with hostings by Richie Hawtin’s Minus, the Age of Love, Dave Clarke, Smash the House, the party at Forma.T and everywhere else. Knowing that tomorrow it would all be over gave everything a certain allure, as if the whole terrain was telling you to push yourself to the limit one last time. A message understood by one and all. how Tomorrow came to last a decade When the domains of De Schorre, Boom, Belgium first came to life with a flurry of festival stages and dance devotees, the event’s moniker was oddly prophetic: Tomorrowland. The future held more than one tomorrow for the newly born land, and has until now graced us with ten editions – ten years – of the world’s most magical festival. How did Tomorrowland come to be, and whence comes its allure? In this final installment of the series, the entire history of the festival you have just experienced is told – starting with the humble beginnings that took place five years into the new milennium.

2005: THE BIRTH OF A FESTIVAL

2005

In Belgium’s northern neighbour, the Netherlands, a movement called Mysteryland had been growing for years. Possibly the world’s most well-traveled festival, it had by 2005 safely settled down at the Floriade grounds, after visiting no less than seven other locations. Its promoters had gone on to mold ID&T into a renowned operation, organizing events such as Thunderdome and Sensation as well as cultivating that very special something that Mysteryland had. Everyone involved felt it: the hills, paths and tiny forests of the Floriade yearly came alive with a dash of magic, a particular shared feeling of enchantment. It was this joint joy that was to be surrected in Belgium as well. A local team, set up by the brothers Beers, found the perfect spot to foster it. De Schorre, an old clay pit with forested walkways, a readily available amphitheatre and beautiful vistas, would become the Mystery-magic’s home away from home. On the fourteenth of August 2005, the Belgian adventure began, and it was called Tomorrowland. From the onset, Tomorrowland was meant to be more than an everyday music festival. The first edition wasted

no time reflecting that. It was a lot smaller than what we are currently used to, but it looked just as bewildering. Huge puppets and creatures, from longnecked blue men to bouncy brown kangaroos, roamed the domains; thousands of guests went exploring just the same. Of course, there were some start-up problems as well. The entrance queue was long, the bars weren’t that fast, and the toilets may have been slightly too few. Tomorrowland being an entirely new festival, some visitors were hesitant to truly dance the day away – but others celebrated merrily. All agreed on two strong points, however: atmosphere and sound. From bumbling fantasy beings to stage décors, lights and fireworks, Tomorrowland had succeeded in its magical mission: to create a land of Tomorrow, outside of normal time. And although music was not to be the festival’s singular forte, it was played on proper systems by skillful – and wellknown – DJs. Thus, the groundwork was laid for an event that would prove, as we now know, to be wildly successful.

2006: A LAND AWAY FROM TIME

2006

To dream, you need to sleep, and to sleep, you need a tent. Just so, Tomorrowland’s second coming included a camping place that offered the most magical of dreams to those who dared spend the night. They woke up to a Tomorrowland one and a half times as big as the first, better organized but just as charming. Certain welcome faces from the first edition returned; most notably, Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten reiterated their performances. Far from bringing only trance, the mainstage was also climbed by David Guetta. Other podia offered a place to everything from the heart-wrenching kicks of hardstyle to the never-stopping train engine that is techno. Tomorrowland’s strategy of inviting partners to provide the musical part of the day turned out to be pretty successful; the people of Tomorrow were introduced to genres they had never heard before, and loved them. Thus, the magic grew. It was no small task to bring to Belgium the seemingly unique feeling Mysteryland had managed to evoke at the former Floriade. So much of it depends on the exact nature of the grounds, the fairies & genies that decide to come out, the mood of the crowd and the weathery will of the gods. (Which in 2006 was first hot, then rainy,

30 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

by the way.) This year, however, made it start to look like Tomorrowland was actually pulling it off. People’s reactions were genuinely positive. Although admittedly, it was hard to find due to lack of signposts, the camping added to the festival’s being a land away from time, enchanted and unreal. The camping pre-party, held the night before the main event at the main stage, was a not-yet-wondrous but amicable introduction to the magical day to come. Yet to make all of Tomorrowland a place of dreams required more than just a camping and a stage. A small army of workers, from the actors that embodied Tomorrow’s wild creatures to the volunteers manning first aid, made for a well-oiled operation. The festival’s collective heartbeat, however, was and remains to be in deejay’s hands. The above-mentioned diversity of styles was filled in by masters of music, Ben Sims, Bob Sinclar and Axwell but a few of them. They were also joined, however, by new and local talents. 2006 showed off Tomorrowland’s definite musical direction: worldclass headliners interspersed with little-known, but just as capable wizards of sound. Between them and all the behind-the-scenes sorcerers that made Tomorrowland tick, the Mystery magic was well and truly recreated – albeit with a distinctive twist.

2007: DOUBLE THE DAWNS One of Tomorrowland’s distinctive features first occurred in 2007, with the addition of a second festival day. On Saturday, a limited number of areas was opened to the public, and Belgian dance stars like Marco Bailey played their songs to an enthusiastic flock of fans. These found themselves on a terrain again painstakingly decorated; a few had felt the magic beforehand, and came dressed in fairy’s wings. Through word of mouth and newly erupting social media, Tomorrowland’s reputation slowly grew. Indeed, the festival was beginning to gain international traction, drawing visitors from Germany, France, the Netherlands and even Great Britain. Some of them came over for the whole weekend, staying at the camping, truly experiencing a morrow at Tomorrowland. Some only went on Sunday, the day on which all nine stages were opened. With now twice as many visitors as in 2005 – some twenty thousand – the podia had a lot to cater for. Tomorrowland was growing up into one of the larger festivals, but with growth comes trouble. Although there was no rain on Sunday, the wet weather beforehand had soaked the soil with

water. In the afternoon, having been trampled by thousands of dancers’ feet, the old clay pits of de Schorre finally gave way and turned to goo. Some areas, Q-dance’s high-tech laser-packed hard-dance zone in particular, became veritable lakes of mud. As some will remember, a dancing style befittingly called ‘jumping’ was all the rage in Belgium back then, leading to more than several grime-covered outfits. In the true spirit of Tomorrowland, however, what was a nuisance to some was a blessing to others, and movies of people dancing and playing in the mud may still be found online. Besides, for those not into getting down and dirty, wooden boards had been laid down at the mainstage, where Paul van Dyk closed the day in style. When he played For an Angel, under the accompaniment of a digital flight of doves, a lot of fans were holding back – or letting go – tears of joy. It is said that the third time’s a charm, and indeed, from 2007 on it became clear to guests, artists and crew alike that Tomorrowland had more charm than just a recreation of Mysteryland’s magic. In the land of Tomorrow, a grand chase for dawn, for happiness, had begun.

2008: DEFINITION OF MAGIC

2008

The first light rays to hit the earth on the twenty-sixth of July, 2008, carried an unambiguous message: this was going to be a hot weekend. Temperatures quickly blazed past 30 ºC as camping and festival filled up with the people of Tomorrow. All in good spirits, though; better to have sweat running down your back than rain running through your tent. Having set up shop at their campsites, people quickly made their way to the festival grounds where they were greeted by a more extensive Saturday programme than last year’s. Tomorrowland demonstrated its nose for future stars by booking Martin Solveig, Paul Kalkbrenner and Gareth Emery across three different stages. In between the dancing in the sunlight and the resting in the shade, a great atmosphere arose. Visitors who had been there in 2007 had happily returned to pass on the passion to newcomers. On Sunday, the addition of a few extra stages and enthusiastic day visitors only served to increase that fever. Again basking in sunlight, the crowd got rather hot and bothered – clothes were nowhere to be seen and it was shaping up to be the most naked edition of Tomorrowland so far. Although cause for eye-candy, the heat was nothing to be trifled

32 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

with; some people succumbed to it, requiring medical attention, though no one was seriously hurt. By and large, the festival thrived. Over the mainstage, an enormous and seemingly flying sea turtle sheltered dancers and deejays alike. In hindsight, it was the 2008 stage that started the trend of highly-detailed, intricate, indeed mesmerizing mains that continues to this day. And at night, under the turtle’s underwater wings, Armin van Buuren played one of his most memorable sets of all time. The weather gods chimed in with a rain shower, turning the laser show into an eerily beautiful light-storm, the most dramatic crescendo anyone could have wished for. Nature too, it seems, had taken note of the magical nature of this festival, and if not, visitors certainly had. Truly, the fourth edition of Tomorrowland was the one where you could taste it in the air: everyone was happy to be there, everyone realized they were becoming part of something greater. Magic had installed itself at the Schorre over the previous three years, growing in strength. It attracted attendees – the People of Tomorrow – from far and wide, and in doing so, ensured a bright future for itself. Everyone who was there was intent on coming back again.

2009: THE FIFTH FESTIVAL Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and for the first time in histor y, the fifth Tomorrowland sold out all of its tickets. Since there were forty thousand of those for ever y day, there were now twice as many people on the terrain as there were two years ago. At certain points, it showed; the festival had grown slightly too fast for its own good, and some bars and facilities had long lines to deal with. Apart from those hiccups, though, more was more. A massive mainstage was built in the same magical spirit as last year, but much more extensive. The purple creature that dominated it was lined with fountains, fireworks and performers. The tradition of incorporating large video screens, showing everything from the prettiest people in the crowd to visual magic tricks, was started as well. Up the hillside to the right a ski piste had been built with actual snow, on which people happily rode down on the back of – you didn’t guess it – crocodiles. As for the other podia, more and bigger hosting partners manned them than ever before. Aside from the Q-dance and Kozzmozz areas, which had both been going strong for a while, David Guetta commanded a

stage for a day and long-time Mysteryland partner Dirty Dutch, as well as famous label Defected in the House, also landed in De Schorre. Spots were reser ved for many more imprints, just like they had been over the past few years, allowing fans of all kinds of styles to mingle. Togetherness, after all, is one of the things Tomorrowland is about. After five years, it had become abundantly clear that due to the grand but loose organization of the festival, musicwise, exchanges could take place that normally never would. Fans of stadiumscale shows like Sensation would be there, at the mainstage, celebrating alongside underground clubbers come over from Café d’Anvèrs. And in 2009, they probably would have been doing this under the careful guidance of superstar surprise act Moby. His set, partially synced to a spectacular display of fireworks, was one of the fifth year’s highlights. And it had, alongside all the other extraordinar y features of the festival, succeeded in putting Tomorrowland on the map internationally. From now on, things were going to be big.

2010: BUILDING CHARACTER

2010

A decade into the new millennium, Tomorrowland was going stronger than ever. Last year’s massive edition had laid claim to an authoritative position among dance music festivals worldwide, and 2010 would be the year to seal the deal. Online, both on old-fashioned forums and newly popular social media, Tomorrowland’s magical atmosphere was tipped as a great thing to see. Before long, all tickets – including 25,000 camping spots – were sold out again. In order to take the crowd to greater heights than last year, 2008’s giant sea turtle swum back to the grounds and settled near the day entrance, carrying a Ferris wheel on its back. Meanwhile, on the other side of the domain, an enormous rainbow came out over the friendly-faced sun which loomed above the audience. Due to the large scale of the event, there was room to realize a counterpoint to the massive stages as well. Tomorrowland had always been populated by a multitude of wondrous creatures, and the environmental decorations had been growing in detail from year to year. Now, the amount of dancers, fairies, gnomes and other small curiosities was such that they became unavoidable. Which was a good thing.

34 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

The magic of Tomorrowland, after all, hangs somewhere in the balance between grandeur and detail. Looking back at Mysteryland one more time, the 2010 edition shows that whereas its Dutch precursor is rich in small, surprising stages and performers, Tomorrowland is enchanted with a single theme throughout. From tiny signposts to towering podia, everything is infused with one single spirit, a magical lust for Tomorrow. Out of the distinctive twist of the first couple of years, Tomorrowland had definitely developed its own style compared to its northern parent. When, towards the weekend’s end, David Guetta took the mainstage, there was nothing holding the crowd back. No apprehension, no hesitation, only a sea of people who felt at home and safe enough to dance like no one was watching. It truly was a sight to behold, and muchdiscussed afterwards: what must have been ten thousand people waving and jumping in unison, from left to right, all about the floor. Closing DJ Chuckie followed suit with a sitdown on a scale never seen before, and thousands of people left the grounds drunk. Not (necessarily) with alcohol, but with a love for Tomorrow. Last year’s promise of a bigger-than-ever edition was well and truly fulfilled.

2011: DANCE REVOLUTION In 2011, it became clear that the surge in popularity of electronic music, which had partially fueled Tomorrowland’s 2010 success, was not going to subside anytime soon. Dubstep was more than a passing hype and Swedish House Mafia had scored more hits than just One. Dance music genres that had enjoyed consistent popularity in Europe for decades finally got the worldwide recognition they deserved. Clearly, it was time for the magic to multiply and Tomorrowland expanded into a threeday festival. The occasion meant further enlargement of the camping, called DreamVille since last year, and a bigger ‘n better Gathering pre-party. Guests were welcomed to their temporary home by the rainbow from last year’s main, now doubling as a massive entry gate. Through it, campers poured out into the festival grounds, where they were greeted by the Tree of Life. She had laid down her roots in the mainstage, her branches stretching across the width of the valley, strange, amphibious creatures crawling from her hidey-holes. In front of her: a diversity of people the festival had never before seen. Canada’s maple leaf, Australia’s Commonwealth blue ensign, and everything in between was waved wildly to and fro amidst the crowd.

In the meantime, the line-up of Tomorrowland had evolved in keeping with the development of dance lovers’ tastes. Beneath the Tree of Life, a mixture of electro and progressive house could be heard, with performers including Faithless, Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner and 2 Many DJs. At the other thirteen podia, styles ranged from deephouse to schranz and beyond. Wherever one went – be it a little-known forest path or a packed dance floor – cheerful people could be found. If during the first five or so years of Tomorrow, the audience was sometimes unsure of how to respond to the festival’s grandeur, they certainly weren’t anymore. And it was the People of Tomorrow who now made the magic, of course, with their relentless relinquishment of everyday societal standards, their unconditional acceptance of the fantasy world they found themselves in, and their joint will to create a Tomorrow to never forget. It was as if a voice could be heard upon entering the festival saying, ‘we’re here to share, we’re here to create the incredible.’ Backed by so many eager supporters, the magic extended across the pond; at the Internatonal Dance Music Awards, among exclusively North American nominees, Tomorrowland conquered the prize for ‘Best Festival’.

2012: Still THE BEST THERE was

2012

In the wake of the previous year’s aftermovie, which had been viewed tens of millions of times on Youtube, it turned out that Tomorrowland’s popularity hadn’t nearly reached its peak yet. There were signals that enthusiasm from abroad had skyrocketed, so an exclusively Belgian presale was launched. In doing so, a balanced mix of loyal locals and newcomers from far away was retained – even in the face of the wave of 2 million people who tried to order tickets worldwide. The unfortunate fate of the fans who were excluded, as well as the glowing reviews of 2011’s aftermovie, led to the inception of Tomorrowland TV. That way, the magic of Tomorrow would be able to flow from De Schorre to the remotest corners of the world – live through Youtube. With a little under two hundred thousand visitors and eight million viewers, Tomorrowland was quite possibly the best-visited festival in history. Those are just numbers, however. Taking home the ‘Best Festival’ IDMA had given everyone behind the screens a confidence boost, and the challenge was on to surpass last year’s performance.

36 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

Now that the People of Tomorrow were well and truly aware that it was they, themselves, that made the magic, it was time to give them single focus. Tomorrowland had always had a strong vision behind décor design, of course, but from 2012 onwards all would be captured in a single theme. The Book of Wisdom was this year’s moniker and of course, the mainstage reflected that. A bookshelf of unimaginable proportions supported the Book of Wisdom and also housed its keepers. Lusting for Tomorrow more than ever before, the DJs were as eager to perform as the crowd was to dance. The churning mass of people in the pit before the podium had, within a few short years, become a familiar sight. No longer amazed, although still delighted at that grand spectacle, the audience collectively decided to recreate it at other stages, too. One highlight was Richie Hawtin’s ENTER tunnel of LED effects – besides David Guetta’s two-hour mainstage extravaganza, of course. The Book of Wisdom proved that last year’s IDMA had been well-deserved – and so received the award again!

2013: THE MAGIC OF LIFE Life always finds a way. At Tomorrowland 2013, it was sown by a volcano whose ashes fertilized and infused De Schorre’s soil with happiness, and the festival’s ninth edition was aptly called The Arising of Life. In the mainstage lived the Spirit of the Mountain, who spoke benevolently to her people; elsewhere, an enormous butterfly spread its wings over fans of Carl Cox, Laidback Luke and Dave Clarke throughout the weekend. In its regular, somewhat secluded area, Q-dance had struck up camp with an exceptionally beautiful stage, a scorpion just as mean as the imprint’s hardstyle kicks. And of course, the People of Tomorrow had been looking lively from the DreamVille Gathering’s very beginning. When on Saturday night, a meteorological mishap doused the festival in heavy rains, the magic of Tomorrow went into full effect. The better part of the mainstage crowd simply refused to leave as Armin van Buuren was – not for the first time – playing a masterful closing set. Along with life itself, a completely new stage had arisen from the waters of one of the grounds’ many lakes. Brought to life not by a creature, but by thousands of plants and flowers, its lush greens created an intimate

setting, inviting thousands to party their brains out. Like previous years, a lot of those people came from abroad, but this time many had booked through the extensive Global Journey programme. They came in by partyflight, bus or train and together, they made sure not a single hotel room in Antwerp, Mechelen and Brussels remained available. DreamVille had grown larger than ever as well, overtaking the festival itself in physical size. Saturday’s heavy showers had turned it into a veritable mud bath, but here too, the magic would not falter. Campers whose tents had succumbed to the rain simply slept elsewhere, and it turned out that a swampy path, an airbed and a running jump made for an excellent mudslide. One year before its tenth anniversary, the denizens of Tomorrowland were more intent on staying than ever. In order for more people from across the world to share in that magic, that ecstatic feeling, the step across the Atlantic was taken, and in September, TomorrowWorld began. Meanwhile in Europe, the anniversary edition of Tomorrowland, the best festival in the world, was eagerly awaited.

2014: A FORMIDABLE LEGACY During its 10 years of existence, Tomorrowland exceeded all expectations and goals set for it at birth. It was meant to be more than music, and it was. It was meant to be magical, and it was. It was meant to become bigger and attract an audience from all over, and it did. Tomorrowland grew so overwhelmingly fast that now, for its 10th birthday, it split into two. At the moment of writing, we are really only halfway; the first festival is at an end, but the second weekend is yet to come. No one knows what the future will bring, but if the recent past is any indication, it will be wonderful. Over the last four days, De Schorre welcomed a mass of people yearning for the spectacle they knew would be supplied. There were a few who had seen Tomorrow grow, went every time from 2005 on. Many more, however, only knew what awaited them from photos, movies and stories. By now, both groups are probably equally proud (and tired) of what has transpired since they arrived.

This year, Tomorrowland was driven by an instrument of happiness which displayed its workings on the mainstage. It was opened by a key, of which every visitor had received a copy, and revealed a host of artists intent on making everyone there the happiest they could. Which was very happy indeed. At the beginning of each day, the audience spent their seemingly endless energy – tropical temperatures notwithstanding – at the smaller stages, the intimate setting of which made for a relaxed afternoon. Towards evenfall, more and more visitors lined up for the mindblowing mainstage shows. Photos of the people, podia, fireworks and fairytale furnishings of Tomorrowland’s anniversary can be found throughout this newspaper. They are a testament to the enormous legacy that has been built up in just a decade, and built up by you. Because for all of the organization’s backstage effort, if there’s any lesson to be learned from the above chronicles, it’s that Tomorrow is ultimately made by its People.
