P eo pl e

o f To mo r row,

P RE PA RE TO BE S UBMERGED I N TO A W H O L E N E W W O R L D A slow and steady rise, a gliding, slippery descent: such is the rhythm of the ocean’s waves. Up, down, and up, and down, and up again you went, friends, sights set for a destination unknown. You went in search of a site marked by a nondescript set of coordinates accompanied only by seahorse, bracelet, and a name: Planaxis. Why, then, did you come? What did you hope to find? The answer is due promptly now; for you have clearly arrived somewhere, your boat – down, bump – landing upon an underwater marvel difficult to make out from above.

For now – for one more day – what is hidden down there remains veiled by foaming waves. For now you remain moored on the precipice of Planaxis, whatever mystery that name may denote. Yet something clearly is afoot inside. Something calls for you, has called for you across the seas and continents, an energy – planted at birth? Bestowed upon you by that seahorse, representing all the creatures of the deep? Who knows. Tomorrow, you will see. For now, be aware of where you are, gathered at the precipice – and unite, friends, for there is a voyage yet to come.

A SEA OF SOUNDS

LOVERS OF MUSIC,

DO YO U R HO M EWORK !

A wise underwater critter once said: “Darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter, under the sea.” It’s a fitting slogan for this weekend, as the amount of excellent music to be discovered is nothing short of astonishing. Dive right in and discover this whole new world on the bottom of the deep blue sea with the likes of Tiësto, Paul Kalkbrenner and Axwell vs. Ingrosso. Sound travels much faster underwater, so you’ll be drowning in beats before you know it. There’s not just four-to-the-floor rhythms standing at the ready, though. Craig David and Coely spearhead a selection of pop and hip-hop artists; The Bloody Beetroots will lay down some nasty guitars for you at the Organ of Harmony and Hush Hefner and TLP will have you shaking your milkshakes all day at Hush Hush. Of course, these are only a tiny few of the many musical surprises in store for you this weekend - so be sure to float around and explore to your heart’s content.

At the back of this paper, starting on p. 30, you will find timetables for the whole weekend. Be sure to mark the artists you don’t want to miss out on!

CAMPSITE EXPLORERS,

PITCH S O ME T E N TS ! DreamVille is home to many people – all of them, same as you, full of love and looking for Planaxis. Be sure to talk to your neighbours and lend them a hand when needed. 1

B E LG I U M

THE STORY OF PLANAXIS No one knows exactly how, why, or when Planaxis was built. The identity of its Architect is long lost to history, its first inhabitants no longer with us. One thing was preserved for all these years, however, and has surfaced with the call for the People of Tomorrow to unite: a diary, waterlogged and old, but supposedly belonging to none other than the visionary builder of the city. Here is its first entry.

Everything was gone.

being realised. It was to be an underwater congregation with a shared roof overhead, I woke up tonight, and at first, there submerged beneath the mighty waves. It was nothing anymore; all the beauty of would be a place of admiration for the the seas I’ve seen destroyed. Fish caught oceans and a guardian of all the creatures and eaten, reefs replaced by industry… of the deep, a self-sufficient community the ocean floor a wasteland, with nothing borne of love for the endless variety of alive in sight. underwater life. Luckily, it was a dream, and luckily, another one came.

If the bottom of the sea is still to be marveled at centuries hence, I must do as this strange dream tells me. Humankind's I went to sleep again, shaken, when a new home under the sea must become second vision unfolded. I saw a place reality – and when it does, it will become that would prevent my other dream from the happiest place on Earth.

DIGITAL MAGIC Online is the new offline! Who doesn’t live their life through a screen nowadays? While experiencing the magic is all about being in the here and now, a little help in finding the right place and time is a good thing. That’s where the Tomorrowland App comes in! With a timetable to make sure you’re not missing out on the action, a floorplan so you can decide upon a meeting point with the friends you lost (again), and a way to take a selfie in true #Tomorrowland style. Download, plan, shoot and share it: get the Tomorrowland app now! You can download the app through the Tomorrowland website, or find it in your Google Play or App Store.

‘ TIS THE SEASON… There’s magic, and then there’s the enchantment of winter: nothing lives and breathes fairytales quite like glistering snowflakes, neverending white landscapes and crisp blue skies do. But what do you get when you combine winter with the magic that is Tomorrowland? Read all about it on p. 28!

LUCKY FEW As one of the lucky few, you received a puzzling box at home not too long ago. You inspected it carefully, decoded its secrets, you’re probably even wearing the necklace now! Adorned with the seahorse, you may have forgotten to check the back of your box… On it, you’ll find the coordinates to the city of Planaxis, a place that will have so much to share with you this weekend. Retrace those coordinates as soon as you can for this story to start: it’s exactly there where you’ll find that the magic will unfold. Giacinta_v I .... CAN’T ..... WAIT !!!!

FIND FLANDERS You’re already in it: Flanders! The Dutch-speaking part of Belgium has plenty going for it, and Tomorrowland is the cherry on top of the Flemish cake. But there’s more to make it a worthwhile stop on your Euro-travels. Belgians know how to indulge, and you can get a taste of it this weekend. Come find, taste and experience Flanders at Tomorrowland while you’re here! For instance, try one (or more) of the many Belgian beers at the beer café on the Marketplace, or give in to the finger-licking local chocolate. Eat at the Aperto Tastes of the World restaurant, where Flanders Kitchen Rebels show their worth, or treat yourself to some festival grub done well by trying the Belgian fries. There’s more, though: did you realise how many Belgian artists are playing this year? Try to count them all in the line-up, if you can! There’s something in the water here for sure, and it’s well worth trying it all now that you can. Find Flanders at Tomorrowland and you might not want to leave the country ever again…

SEND YOUR SELF(IE) Her banner is staring you right in the face as you first meet her: “Send your selfie with me to today@tomorrowland.com.” But where will you find her? Every year, mysterious miniature People of Tomorrow from Art for Thought appear all over the festivalsite. This year, they challenge you to snap a photo with them! If you come across the little girl asking you to take a selfie with her, do not hesitate. Send it in and you might go home with a TML by Tomorrowland package. She’ll choose her favourite selfie every day, so slide into her DMs and you might just get lucky!

7

DIGI-CONFET TI It’s invisible, goes through walls, gets weaker or stronger depending on distance and is extremely addictive: any guesses? Free Wi-Fi, of course! Find the People of Tomorrow Free Wi-Fi hotspots all around the festival site so you can throw Tomorrowland selfies online like confetti!

LOVE TOMORROW MUSIC & ARTS SCHOOL Actions speak louder than words, and with that in mind, the Love Tomorrow Foundation has achieved one very tangible new success. Driven by your very own donations and help in building up the foundation, promising words have become actions. In collaboration with the Belgian nonprofit organization Cunina and together with the Love Tomorrow Foundation, Tomorrowland has opened up its very first music school on the ‘Roof of the World’ in Sekha, Nepal. This very first of many upcoming projects kicks off a brand new era for Tomorrowland, as all the positive energy coming from the festival itself is converted into the building of a better world.

MUSIC AND DANCE O N T H E RO O F O F T H E WO R L D On Monday April 16 in Sekha, a small mountain village in the heart of the Nepalese Himalaya, the first Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School was festively opened. The date was highly symbolic, as it was also the first official day of school in Nepal following the Nepalese New Year, traditionally celebrated on April 14. The music school is the result of a unique collaboration between Tomorrowland and its Love Tomorrow Foundation on the one hand, and Belgian NGO Cunina on the other. The honour of opening the school’s doors was left to Sophie Vangheel, founder-president and GM of Cunina, and Felix de Laet a.k.a. DJ Lost Frequencies, who was there to represent Tomorrowland and the People of Tomorrow: you, the actual funders of this whole project. As your gifts were so generous, don’t mistake yourself in thinking this Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School is merely four walls with nothing but some school benches, a banjo and a triangle inside. It is in fact fully integrated into the existing Cunina Boarding School where more than 300 children, sponsored by Cunina godparents, will now have the chance to explore their creativity and learn about music and dance. The school, which has been 8

given a distinctive, original design, covers over 400 square metres and features four spacious classrooms and a central covered playground. The classes will be taught by two full-time music teachers as a part of the standard curriculum for the youngsters. They will learn the ways of the guitar, flute and keyboard, next to a variety of traditional Nepalese music instruments such as the Sarangi (a string instrument) and the Madal (a hand drum). By building the school, the Love Tomorrow Foundation wants to give children and young people the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Love Tomorrow and Cunina believe that high-quality education is the key to a better future, although education should not be limited to learning to read and write alone. The ability to creatively express oneself through music or through dance forms an essential part of the personal development and education of children. Building the first Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School is only a first step for the Love Tomorrow Foundation, which has the ambition of opening more of these schools for music and arts in the coming years. As far as locations go, both organizations are now scouting for places and continents where children and young people need their help the most. The next Love Tomorrow projects will be announced in 2019.

B E LG I U M

100% funded by the People of Tomorrow The construction of the first Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School has been funded for 100% by the visitors of Tomorrowland. At the last two editions of the festival, the People of Tomorrow were offered various ways of making a contribution to this fine cause. For example, when you activated your bracelet and added Pearls to it, you were given the opportunity to donate 2 Pearls to the foundation and thus to build the school. Donation is still possible, of course, so for the equivalent of one drink you’ll add another brick in the walls of the next Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School - and fill up your good karma tank while you’re at it. For those that want to do even more, there is the possibility to donate Pearls a t any given time during the festival. Furthermore, for every Tomorrowland flag that is purchased in the merchandise shops on the festival grounds or through the webshop, a donation of five euros is made to the Foundation.

This also offers those who did not manage to grab a festival ticket to contribute. And because we’re all working on that better world together, everyone who received a free ticket through a partner or sponsor will have to pay a one-time contribution to the Foundation in exchange. Last but not least, the proceeds of Secret Resto, the exclusive restaurant built somewhere inside the Mainstage, also go to the Love Tomorrow Foundation. Your very own spokesman and representative at the opening of the school was none other than Belgian top DJ and Tomorrowland household name Lost Frequencies, defending the colors of the People of Tomorrow in faraway Nepal. But make no mistake: this was your own achievement. Let’s keep making this world a better place for everyone through the unremitting power of music.

You are the actual funders of this whole project.

Felix de Laet a.k.a. DJ Lost Frequencies was present at the opening of the Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School and shares his experiences: “First of all, I was really honoured to have been asked by Tomorrowland to fly for and with them to Nepal to open the school, the new big project of the Love Tomorrow Foundation. Needless to say, I absolutely wanted to take part in this great adventure, so I cleared my schedule in order for me and my team to be able to attend the trip to Nepal. Immediately after we set foot on Nepalese soil we noticed what an amazingly beautiful country this is, with those majestic mountains and the specific architectural style which can also be found in the school.” “Although I didn’t play any music there myself, I did attend the whole opening ceremony. The official part was graced by a local live band – which of course fits perfectly into the spirit of the school. Besides many other things, traditional Nepalese instruments are a significant aspect of the curriculum. It’s a nice way of keeping their own culture very much alive. My first time in Nepal definitely was one I’ll never forget, but I do hope to return to the school someday. Maybe I’ll even make some music together with the kids, by then they will have studied there for a while.” “It’s also very comforting to know that all the efforts made and all the gifts contributed to the Foundation by the People of Tomorrow really do make a big difference. We can actually do some real work in the world and building a school is a major example of that. Some of these kids used to have to walk two and half hours to and from school every single day. Being able to do something back for them is so, so inspiring.”

‘Have you tried switching it off and on again?’ or ‘Just put it in rice!’ aren’t always quick fixes when it comes to mobile phones. LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU Your underwater weekend will begin the only way it really ought to: partying it up at the Gathering. The official pre-party on Thursday night gets you going straight from the start. However, this year, more will be happening on that exact spot. Overnight, the Entertainment Stage will appear! On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, return to be wowed right there. Both right before and right after the festival (say, late in the morning and around 1 a.m.), the circus director will be calling for you. He and his friends will aide you in kicking off or cooling down the festival day by adding their extra touch of magic. Get hypnotised, be awed, get serenaded to and be marvelled by artists of all sorts! Let them entertain you…

HEAR, HEAR!

You wouldn’t want to go without your daily this weekend, would you? Call us biased, but it’s the only right way to start the day. That’s why the Newspaper Boys will be attracting your attention not just with their snazzy looks, but also by carrying the most-wanted goods: Tomorrowland Today! It’s a collectable, it’s (in)famous… It’s the only reason you’re here, really – right?

KEEP DREAMING

Hear a little rustling around your tent in the a.m.? Panic not! The Morning Fairies will be busy waking you in the gentlest way; they fly over every single tent to wake you with the tiniest sprinkling of fairy dust. Not to keep you asleep, but so you can carry your dreamlike fantasies into the day! They’ll make everything look shinier, taste yummier and sound heavenlier (yes, that’s a word). So please, do not disturb…

SHINE ON

Spotted a cutie and need a little mirror-check? No need to rush back to your tent or to do the awkward selfie-camera move; just look for the Shoeshiners, instead! These men will try their best to turn your shoes into portable mirrors, with the added effect that you’ll tan twice as quickly with a reflection this vivid. You won’t want to simply walk past them – not with those shoes, anyway.

That's why this upcoming weekend, Pearls are the keys that open all cashless locks. Whether you're in for a merch shopping spree, or it's your turn to buy breakfast, or you're in need of a drink, Pearls will be your means of payment. And holding them close won't be a problem, as the way to carry them is through your bracelet.

For non-SEPA countries PayPal is a free alternative option. ** The automatically refundable amount is limited to the total amount that you have topped up online with credit card and/or debit card. If your remaining balance exceeds this amount, you have to apply for a manual refund for the leftover value that is left after your automatic refund.

Although the best way to experience this weekend is to indulge yourself in all that is Tomorrowland and DreamVille, you might want a reality check from time to time. That's why you will always be able to check your Pearls balance online after you've activated your bracelet through your Tomorrowland Account. At the cashless Top-Up booths, food and beverage stands, Cashless Customer Service, and in the app, you will be able to check the amount of Pearls you have left.

How to us e your b r ac e l et Always wear your Bracelet on your right wrist;

this makes scanning fast and easy. Make sure the Tomorrowland logo is facing you and do not wear the bracelet upside down. Scan the icon printed on your Bracelet to enter the Tomorrowland grounds and DreamVille, and to pay for food and drinks.

Don't forget to Top-Up your bracelet before breaking ground at the campsite. Doing so is easy: go to your Tomorrowland Account and click 'Cashless Top-Up' to add the number of Pearls your desire for the weekend you will be a part of. You can do so from home or with a mobile device. The best thing? Any unspent Pearls will automatically be refunded through your Tomorrowland Account. To Top-Up, you can use Mastercard, Visa, Bancontact and iDeal. Topping up at physical sites on Tomorrowland or DreamVille is also possible. All Top-Up booths accept Visa, Mastercard, and cash. SHINE ON Tomorrowland is a mythical place, a place where joy reigns; but even more importantly, it attracts the most magical crowd. Whereas on the Holy Grounds, People of Tomorrow are instantly connected by mere presence, spotting your kindred spirits in the wild can be a trickier affair. It just got a little easier though – with the launch of the new TML by Tomorrowland Collection 2018. Fashion: it’s not about standing out from the crowd, so much as it’s about showing your true self to the world. What we wear has an immense effect on how we feel as well as on how we come across. When what you wear embodies what you stand for, you’ll confidently find your place in the world. You're about to become one of the People of Tomorrow. Whether you’re a first-timer or a Tomorrowland veteran, you'll notice that after a weekend of newly made memories, you might not want to leave that (new or strengthened) confidence behind on the Holy Grounds. You’ll want to take it with you! With the TML by Tomorrowland Collection, you can ease back into the real world while still carrying your magical vibe anywhere you go. Grab the new collection here on the festival grounds, in one of the international stores or online when you’re back home; whatever way you do it, you’ll let your inner-festival-beast shine through wherever you are.

Think the TML by Tomorrowland collection is just for the die-hards? Think again! The 2018 collection is perfect for any and every free spirit. For instance, these TML by Tomorrowland items will suit your personality in style… • Icons Galore: You love Tomorrowland and you ain’t afraid to show it. With a Tomorrowland branded T-shirt and the iconic cap, you’ve got the basics down. Add jeans and sneakers, and you’re almost ready to go. Just one tough decision to make: will you wear the TML jeans jacket or your leather one? • Travel Lover: A hint of the places you’ve been shines through in your style, so everything you wear tells a story. The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

2018

Music: is there any language more universal? That’s the exact premise on which Unite with Tomorrowland builds connections all over the world. No matter where someone is in the world, they can be one of the People of Tomorrow! And from the Belgian Holy Grounds, you’ll be able to come together with friends from the seven Unite with Tomorrowland gatherings, all under the watchful eye of the millions of people watching the livestream at home. Each of the Unite countries will put their individual touch on the magic that is unity; each of you will add your personal sparkle to the enchantment of togetherness. With a livestream straight from the Belgian Mainstage this Saturday, each of the Unite events hosts their own gathering with artists from all over the world. Will you join the global movement of music lovers? Dance, shine bright, love and Unite!

YO U A R E U N I T E ABU DHABI ABU DHABI

Where in the world does it make more sense to Unite than somewhere already carrying it in its name? The United Arab Emirates make a perfect base for this Tomorrowland-infused gathering. With a line-up consisting of artists from near and far, Abu Dhabi will get the chance to party to some living examples of unitedness. Like lifelong friends Lucas & Steve, who excel in the power of togetherness. And what about label-colleague Ummet Ozcan, who literally has a union of Dutch and Turkish blood running through his veins? One thing is for sure; on July 28th, the UAE will showcase its truly United side.

MONZA I TA LY

Monza is no stranger to international spectacles touching down on their soil. But never have they experienced true magic putting its roots down in their fertile lands. Unite with Tomorrowland is bringing just that to the Italian city: an abundance of music lined with a touch of dreams coming true. Masters of the trade Yves V and Martin Solveig aren’t afraid to take the lead in uniting fans, whereas Claptone and Malaa bring their mysterious vibes to leave the crowd wanting more. The latter two being veiled in secrecy, a touch of Venetian masquerade is embedded in their identity. A perfect fit for an Italian edition of Unite with Tomorrowland, don’t you think?

BEIRUT L E BA N O N

Blend it like hummus, arrange it like mezze; Lebanon knows how to bring together an array of flavours to bring out the best of each and all combined. And that’s exactly why Unite with Tomorrowland is coming to Beirut, to be blitzed into a creamy whole. With local flavours like MaDJam and Yussef K, not much more is needed, but still – the invincible Borgeous will add some spice, and Laidback Luke will leave straight from his Kung Fu class to Beirut to show everyone a proper fist-pump to the beat. With a livestream from the Holy Grounds, this is one delicious party you won’t want to miss.

MARSA M A LTA

Did you know that the amount of Maltese citizens is nearly the same as the amount of People of Tomorrow who gather yearly on the Holy Grounds? Taking that into account, it’s only fair that the two show each other the true meaning of Unite. Being an island, Malta knows how to express the uniqueness that a true Tomorrowland gathering requires. The wild-and-wonderful Steve Aoki and the equally crazy-and-loved NERVO sisters will Unite the exceptionality of both worlds, making sure that Malta will be left with an added layer of extraordinaire speciale.

M E X I CO C I T Y M E X I CO

When you picture Mexico, doesn’t a fiesta of sorts spring to mind immediately? Mexico is intrinsically linked to all the good things in life, and there needs to be no other reason for Unite with Tomorrowland to venture to the Americas than just that. Coming to Mexico City are Sick Individuals, who will make sure the crowd loses its mind and finds el ritmo. Showtek will show Mexico why they like to party, and Jessica Audiffred will turn the party up twenty notches and then some. Standing still is not an option, so Mexico will Unite into a new level of madness!

BA RC E LO N A S PA I N

Oh, Barca: a city that blends beachy vibes and city life together just perfectly. Already a pro at Unite – not just in its cultural blend, but also having hosted an edition before – there’s no doubt this Catalan delicacy will shine on July 28th. Hitting that sweet spot are some special duos: Ofenbach, who know how to mix deep with catchy; Galantis, where high-pitched vocals will make you want to sing along instantaneously; and Double Pleasure, the Belgian duo who will leave you satisfied yet begging for more. And what could possibly be more pleasurable than Unite with Tomorrowland with a suave crowd and magical music? ¡Vamos de fiesta!

TA I P E I TA I WA N

The most faraway Unite with Tomorrowland this year is, without a doubt, the one in Taiwan. Very ready and able to set a towering example as to what unity should feel like, get ready to Unite with a crowd wilder than wild. They’ll get exactly what they need; with 90s kids Martin Jensen and Julian Jordan taking the stage, ‘rising stars’ seems to be the theme. Also from the northern end of Europe are Dannic and Headhunterz, all of whom will come together in the city known to reach for the stars. There is no doubt that this Unite will rise beyond anyone’s expectations.

LOVE TOMORROW For the next couple of days, Planaxis and DreamVille will be all yours to explore. As People of Tomorrow, you are about to enter a journey into a world of unity, love and creativity. With the start of this magnificent journey comes responsibility.

S o rt i n g Sy m b o l s To keep the Holy Grounds of Tomorrowland clean and happy, it is important to sort your waste well. Your actions count! Recycling your waste right protects Mother Nature and her resources.

PAPER AND CARDBOARD: These orange bins are for the Tomorrowland Today With the new sorting symbols, recycling has never been easier for the Newspaper and all other paper People of Tomorrow. The symbols will have the same shapes and colors and cardboard. Don’t put coffee everywhere. It is impossible not to recognize them! You will see them at or tea cups in there – these go every Recycle Point. into OTHER.

PMD: These blue bins are for Plastic bottles, Metal cans and Drink Cartons. Make sure not to put any cups or other plastic in there!

OTHER: These black bins are for all your residual waste, including coffee and tea cups.

Love Tomorrow and re-use shop Ecoso started up the CAMP2CAMP initiative two years ago. With this initiative, tents and camping equipment left behind get a second life. Benefits are plentiful: the plan eliminates heavy luggage, is environmentally friendly, cheap, and contributes to social service jobs.

1 R ec yc l e K i t s Today our Recycle Team members are distributing Recycle Kits to all visitors at DreamVille. With these Kits, you can start your magnificent journey in the most sustainable way. The Kit itself is made out of agricultural waste. It’s a small box that is printed with information that makes recycling as easy as possible. Inside the Kit, you will find what you need to get started: a blue bag for PMD (Plastic bottles, Metal cans, Drink cartons), and a grey or white bag for OTHER (general waste). If you haven’t received a Kit, or need a new bag, ask one of the Recycle Team members or come and get one at the Recycle Clubhouse!

S P ECIAL PROTECTION You love music? Then you also love your ears! That means there's no way you're not taking precautions, is there? Just in case you hadn't thought that through yet, BLOX comes to the rescue. BLOX limited edition ear plugs – designed especially for Tomorrowland – don't just protect your hearing, they’ll also look great with your festival outfit. You'll want to wear these year round afterwards! Get them for 13 Pearls at the BLOX shop on DreamVille, or on the festival site near the Ferris wheel. You've never wanted to use protection so bad before!

M IXIN G I T U P Of course, no Belgian export product is better-known that the thousands of beers the country produces – but did you know the ‘standard’ beer poured at all bars is also Belgian? Jupiler has been Tomorrowland’s main supplier for a long time, and will give the People of Tomorrow a peek behind the scenes at The Brewery. This cosy, unassuming area emphasises Jupiler’s heritage by implementing the beer’s main ingredients in its design – and also happens to host a line-up good enough to rival most of the festival’s stages. With DJ EU, Bruno Martini, Dave Lambert and many others at the decks, it seems mixing the ingredients for beer and mixing great music go well together! What’s more, at The Brewery, Jupiler is served in unique and limited aluminium bottles. Enjoy this Belgian treat to the fullest, and take your bottle home for a souvenir!

Capture the Moment You’ll probably be taking a selfie or two this weekend – but what about one that captures most of the Holy Grounds along with yourself? In front of the Freedom Stage, by Budweiser, you will find a stand where you can capture your journey for Planaxis in a panoramic selfie. As you stand on the podium, the camera will zoom out far and wide, catching the beauty of the stage, the surrounding scenery, and the happiness on your face. You’ll be emailed the photo after the festival, so that you’re able to keep this memory and share it with your friends. Upload it with #BUDxTOMORROWLAND to join up with your fellow selfie seekers online!

TASTES OF THE WORLD

2018

What unites people from all over the world, despite their origins & culture, and goes beyond all boundaries the same way music does? Exactly, food. Everyone who ever experiences Tomorrowland soon discovers that food is taken very seriously here – but in the most fun, light-hearted and happy-making way possible. By seriously, we mean making it as delicious as possible and to us, delicious means finger-licking good. Whether you’re in need of an energy or vitamin boost, you want to experience some serious, high-end, mouthwatering, star-worthy cooking, or you’re merely craving some fast food that will make for the perfect, high-paced pit-stop in between sets: Tomorrowland’s Tastes of the World gladly caters to each and every kind of foodie.

WHERE FUEL BECOMES SOUL FOOD APERTO What if there was one destination where you could taste all the flavours of our worlds in one restaurant? For the second year in a row, Aperto would be just that place. Nick Bril (** chef, The Jane) and six young chefs from the ‘Jong Keukengeweld’ collective will be concocting their most popular dishes for their guests to savour. Aperto’s chef line-up will leave you drooling, or at least dreaming of all the food magic that is waiting to be created: Michael Yates (Sail & Anchor) Matthias Speybrouck (Va et Vient) Vilhjalmur Sigurdarson (Souvenir) Alexander Reniers (Osteria Moretti) Glen Ramaekers (Humphrey) Laure Genonceaux (Brinz’l)

NOODLE BURGERS You might consider yourself a burger specialist. Someone who has tasted, savoured, rejected and rejoiced in a lot of different kind of buns, sauces and burger combinations. A burger pro, in a way. But chances are you have never tried a Noodle Burger... Imagine the juiciest burger you can think of, wedged between a bun made out of noodles. It’s a spicy, surprising alternative for the burgers you love so dearly, but with the Asian twist that will change your view on buns forever.

FAYA LOBI

Add as much exotic flavour to your Tomorrowland experience as you need with the soul food from Faya Lobi. The two Surinamese sisters behind the pots and pans will happily prepare you a sharing platter that will make you, your friends, and especially your taste buds jump for joy. Think roti, bara (fried, spiced mung bean flower donuts), Surinamese pies and more. The only thing left for you to do would be to close your eyes and imagine yourself being on a perfect journey. Oh, wait…

26

GREENWAY Those who snoozed at DreamVille last year and tried Greenway’s Love Tomorrow kebab know: kebab and veggies should’ve been best friends from the very start. Greenway has been dishing out the best vegetarian flavours for quite some time now, and after the launch of their Love Tomorrow kebab last year, it was impossible to imagine this year’s Tastes of the World without them.

HUMPHREY BRUSSELS

BLEND BROTHERS

MEAT & EAT

What if we were to tell you there’s someone who has managed to combine the best flavours from 7500 islands into a spring roll and a burger? That’s precisely what Glen Ramaekers from Humprey Brussels did. His Filipino food reflects all the influences that the island nation has experienced over the years. His burgers and spring rolls are best described as wrapped food gifts, and they form a vibrant gastronomic experience that will have you coming back for more.

Last year, Gault&Millau praised Blend Brothers’ ‘kroket’ with an award, and rightfully so. Its perfectly crispy outside and its heart- and belly-warming inside make for a heavenly local treat. We could go on forever emphasizing all the reasons why you should try their croquettes at least once this weekend, but you will simply have to take our word for it. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on the Blend Brother’s version of fried happiness, but be warned: no one ever said you would be able to enjoy just one of these babies.

Everyone needs a little crunch from time to time. Even more so when it’s seasoned with cumin and will leave you longing for more Middle Eastern adventures. Meat & Eat makes their Moroccan crisps to perfection, and as Moroccan heritage has it, everyone is invited to eat at this place and stay for as long as they want. Finding Meat & Eat shouldn’t be hard: just follow the sound of crispy crunchiness or follow the smell of the spices. After all, cumin has always been a good omen.

OYYA

KAASAFFINEURS VAN TRICHT

B-EAT BY LAS VEGAS

Sugary squares made from the most superior ingredients: pearl sugar, plant-based fats, high-quality flour, eggs, natural vanilla – all carefully combined to create the perfect Belgian waffle. Light and soft from the inside, and crunchy and caramelized from the outside. Although Oyya’s waffles are so delicious they don’t need any toppings, that doesn’t mean you can’t decorate yours. From whipped cream to strawberries and chocolate and everything in-between: Oyya pays the perfect ode to one of Belgium’s favourite sweets.

Some business owners simply find themselves in the happiness business. Kaasaffineurs Van Tricht, for instance. Because let’s be honest here, when you know and understand cheese, you pretty much know everything there is to know about life itself. Sumptuous, perfectly ripe and saline: cheese is like a life well-lived. With enough care and attention, it goes from good to perfection. This weekend, live life to the fullest with the tartiflettes and burattas from the Antwerp-based cheese parlour.

Dining at B-EAT By Las Vegas means you don’t have to push the pause button on your festival experience to eat. You’ll get to take it to a whole new level by marrying your need for dancing with your need for food. B-EAT By Las Vegas combines the best of both worlds by serving you exquisite beats and foods at the same time. This clubstaurant has been a Tastes of the World staple for some time now, and an indispensable destination for foodies and beats lovers alike.

SEMPLICE E BUONO

NOU MIL

FUN FOOD FACTS

Italians do a lot of things very well, and sandwiches are undoubtedly one of them. From baking superb bread, sourcing the most beautiful ingredients and devouring them in the best possible company: to Italians, a sandwich isn’t ‘just’ a sandwich. It’s a moment to pause, to think about things that matter and a way to fuel themselves for the rest of the day in a tasteful manner (literally and figuratively!). Semplice e Buono will provide you your daily dose of Italian sandwich with the same love and care as if you were in Italy.

Born in Gent, but sun-kissed by heartwarming Spanish sun and fuelled by all the passion in the world. That’s the only way to describe Nou Mil, your Tastes of the World destination for everything tasty and Spanish. Take a shortcut to all your favorite dishes from the land of olives, paella and seafood, or go for the happiness that comes with sharing: your belly will lead you straight to Nou Mil’s tapas platters.

Did you know… •T hat over 2 million ice cubes are produced for the festival? That’s the equivalent of 43 kilometers of ice cubes! • That if we were to make a tower of all the pizzas sold at Tomorrowland, we could build the tower of Pisa ten times over? • Tomorrowland’s five restaurants serve 2500 guests on a daily basis?

LIVE IT

LIVE!

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

B E LG I U M

WHAT IS A LIVESET? Rooted in the ages-old concept of a band of people playing live music with instruments, influenced by the experience of electronic music production and inspired by the sort of groove-building invented by DJs: a liveset can be lots of different things in the world of dance music. Some live acts, such as Paul Kalkbrenner, simply bring a studio full of synthesizers, drum machines and a mixer onstage, and rebuild their own tracks live, like a one man band. Others bring an actual band with them, from drum kit to guitar players – Coely is a good example. Besides these archetypical forms, a lot of hybrids are possible. From rappers who appear on stage before a DJ, clutching nothing but a microphone, to modular synthesis wizards who let their machines do the talking, Planaxis has it all.

As of late, Tomorrowland has been slowly returning to the roots of musicmaking with an increased focus on live performances. Even though the craft of the DJ is a venerable, wholly unique affair that will never be absent from the Holy Grounds, livesets are a welcome, explosive and fun addition that make our beloved festival all the more varied. With actual bands moving about on stage, unexpected twists and turns to your favourite songs, and a whole new level of interaction between musician and crowd, these are some of the one-of-a-kind performances you don’t want to miss.

Bloody Beetroots

FRIDAY | LIVE STAGE (ORGAN OF HARMONY) | 22h15 – 23h15

Long before beetroot regained popularity as a superfood, Italian-born Bob Cornelius Rifo decided to move away from his punk rock and new wave roots to embark on his brand-new live electronic project The Bloody Beetroots. With support from Étienne de Crécy, Alex Gopher and - recently - Steve Aoki, the dripping purple rascals have seen their career skyrocket over the past few years. Catch the masked duo play their incredible live set, it’s meant to be bloody good!

Klingande

FRIDAY | LIVE STAGE (ORGAN OF HARMONY) | 17h00 – 18h00 Like his contemporary, Kygo, French tropical house wonderboy Klingande is a prime example of an ultra-talented producer using live instruments in his productions and performances. With a vision seldomly seen among dance music producers, the man born as Cedric Steinmyller effortlessly blends both saxophone and piano sounds into his shows. Previous gigs at Tomorrowland received overwhelming public praise and critical acclaim, so come along and create an amazing memory for you and your friends!

Push

FRIDAY | LIVE STAGE (ORGAN OF HARMONY) | 20h30 – 21h30 Some people love trance, others prefer techno, and still other music fans simply can’t choose. Mike Dierickx a.k.a. Push decided to embrace his schizophrenic love for the two genres and blend them into his own spectacular live show. Having discovered synths and samplers at the tender age of eleven, now 34 years ago, this remixer of Moby, Mauro Picotto, and Oliver Lieb is also an experienced performer who totally owns his near-perfect, hypnotic live performances.

THE GATHERING The best time of the year has arrived, which means there are two categories of ultraexcitement at play. The first one is enjoyed by experienced People of Tomorrow: you know what’s to come and that it’s too much to deal with, really. Type number two is observed among Tomorrowland first timers: you don’t know what the hell is going to happen, but you can sense it’s something grander than grand. Whichever group you belong to, on Thursday, the Gathering is there for you, and it’s a warm-up event of a calibre that’s simply unheard of.

We don’t want to scare you off too much, but even though the Gathering is a welcoming party, it really is something else – and it sets the tone for the rest of Tomorrowland in a fabulous way. You won’t find any real spoilers here, but we’ll give away some bits and bobs. For several years now, the campsite has been opening its doors on Thursday for those who prefer to arrive smoothly, avoiding the traffic jams and pitching their tents in relative peace and quiet. Relative, we say, because most of you haven’t really come to Boom to bum around in your hammock all weekend. So to make you feel welcome and at home, DreamVille is immediately kicked off with the best of what Belgian dance music has to offer. And as you may or may not know, there’s no rave history like Belgian rave history, so don’t you worry; you’ll be warmed up in a banging way. Old school names from the nineties such as the Bonzai Allstars (named after the legendary club in Lokeren) share the bill with the most pumping jocks of the moment, including Antwerp’s hard EDM duo Lowriderz, Café d’Anvers resident DJ Prinz with his hypnotic house sounds, and the guaranteed-to-please eclectic beats of Henri PFR. The Story of Planaxis is about to begin, so you’d better drop everything and get ready.

TONIGHT’S LINE-UP HIGHLIGHTS The Gathering is the place to be on Thursday, but which acts do you definitely not want to miss out on between pitching your tent and wolfing down dinner? Of course Cherry Moon Trax – alias DJ Ghost & Yves Deruyter, the founding fathers of Belgium’s house scene – are mandatory fare for all DreamVille denizens young and old, but besides that no-brainer, below, you will find the limelight on a number of the night’s acts. Be sure to plan for your personal must-sees!

REGI

AXEL HAUBE

Regi Penxten - better known as Regi - is a Belgian producer of poppy, chart-topping trance, spearheading famous acts such as Milk Inc and Sylver. If these names don’t ring a bell, then think Vengaboys, except a little more trancey. Regi is an excellent DJ, which is easy to tell from his fifteen-volume mixtape series Regi in the Mix. Recording mixes isn’t exactly the same as jamming it out live, but with his forty-two years of age, Regi knows Belgium’s DJ booths inside out and is a highly confident live DJ, spinning not only trance but also plenty of crossover bangers and mash-ups.

Axel Haube’s first introduction to the mixing decks dates back to 2008. At the age of 16, his career took off playing gigs at notorious clubs like Café d’Anvèrs, Labyrinth and Noxx in Antwerp. With a keen ear for good tunes, Haube even took his show up to London where he played Café 1001 and Ministry of Sound. Releases on both Sustain-Release and Comport Records started off his career as a producer, with new work scheduled to be released later this year. Axel Haube’s energetic house and techno sets at Tomorrowland have been praised in the past, and he will impress again at this year’s Gathering.

BONZAI ALL STARS

19h45 - 20h30

21h00 - 21h45

Henri PFR isn't exactly your average twenty-something. Born in 1995, the Flemish producer released his debut at the age of 14 on world-renowned DJ Armin van Buuren's label. Collaborating left and right, adding his melodic style to remixes for artists including Editors and Robin Schulz, Henri has already been awarded his first platinum record – and racked up numerous performances at Tomorrowland, where he is always a crowd favourite. There is but one conclusion to the style of this versatile young talent: the lightness Henri PFR brings to house music will make you feel that summer vibe.

Marijn Heylen and Sam Bombeek have been leaving their smashing mark on the international scene since 2013. Known for their exuberant drops and uplifting breaks, Double Pleasure makes it virtually impossible to stand still during any of their performances. But their sets aren't the only progressive thing about them. When their debut single 'Background' was bound to conquer the world, these gentlemen simply released their track on their own, taking a gamble that was widely rewarded by its international success. One thing’s for sure: their shared passion for Latin, tribal and progressive house is bound to put a spell on those who listen carefully.

DAYBREAK SESSIONS

PAUL KALKBRENNER MAINSTAGE | 12h00 – 14h50

There’s no better way to wake up than having yourself a healthy breakfast consisting out of nice big chunks of techno and electro with a side of scrambled minimal. For those of you who are here to focus on good old-fashioned quality music, the Daybreak Sessions were created. Each day, the Mainstage is kicked off with a lengthy three-hour set to satisfy your craving for prime quality beats. Ease your way from the magical peacefulness of the morning towards the madness that will break loose later that day all across the festival. The Daybreak Sessions are hosted by a big name in the festival’s line-up. Getting out of bed a little earlier today is none other than Paul Kalkbrenner. He will play his live setup for an unusually long time to serve you a unique set in which he can expand beyond the regular, shorter festival sets and is able to tell and complete and broader story. A well-known figure from Berlin, Paul is a very headstrong producer and usually circumvents the city’s vast and notorious electronic scene, preferring to focus on doing entirely his own thing. This isn’t Paul’s first rodeo, though. He’s been putting credits to his name for over twenty years now, performing live since 1998. With the lead role in the unforgettable film ‘Berlin Calling’, a couple of hits with the allure of true classics – remember ‘Sky and Sand’? – and, most importantly, a consistent level of quality throughout his productions, fans of melodious techno from all over the world have come to adore him. He’s the creator of a whole new generation, a community, a movement of techno, electro and minimal. With his new album ‘Parts of Life’ ready to play, he’ll most likely treat you to some fresh cuts from his synthesizers. For all his contributions to electronic music to date, the future is set to usher in even more power moves from this unshakable presence in the studio, in the music industry and behind the mixing deck - starting with this Daybreak Session. Wake up!

HARDWELL FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY MAINSTAGE | 23h50 – 00h50 Prolific and popular as ever, Dutch DJ Robbert van de Corput hardly requires an introduction. Having been #1 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs twice, and being lauded these days for a highly eclectic output of releases, he is ready to make waves at the Mainstage on both weekends with a varied record selection. One thing is for sure: with Hardwell at the helm, the crowd is guaranteed a journey they’ll not soon forget. Having played everything from solo ADE shows to your own charity events in India, you now have your sights set on Tomorrowland. What is it like for you to play here? “I’m excited to be back! I’ve always had an amazing relationship with the fans at Tomorrowland so I’m looking forward to connecting with them once more on the Mainstage. We all know the impressive spectacle that Tomorrowland create with their Mainstage production and all the special elements that go with it. So yeah, I’m very much looking forward to partying with the Tomorrowland family again!” You have a primetime slot at the Mainstage on both weekends – the whole world of EDM is watching. How do you prepare for a set like that? “You always have to create something very special for these moments and for me, well, I know this year is going to be one a lot of fans are really looking forward to. I’ve had many of my fans from around the world reach out and tell me they can’t wait for my set. So I’ve spent a lot of time working on some really special tracks and edits. I’m buzzing with excitement at the thought of this show. I never plan my sets but I do like to prepare a real selection of music that I’ll have with me, records I might play, music I’ll sample or possibly

use to bring different elements into the set. It’s all about feeling and atmosphere. I like to react to the crowd, and at Tomorrowland you always want to give the crowd something they’re not expecting.” Your latest releases have been all over the place – from bigroom house to Dutch new wave hiphop to different kinds of hardstyle. How do you manage to work well within so many different styles? “I actually started out like this. Well, I started with hip hop and then went into dance music, but I mean I always bounced around with styles and genres. I like to mix up my music tastes. Over the years I’ve focused more on the electronic sound as my DJ’ing took off, but in the studio and even on stage, I am always playing around with new sounds. I’ve never been an artist who is stuck with one sound. It just doesn’t suit me.”

“I’ve never been an artist who is stuck with one sound. It just doesn’t suit me” In a recent online interview, you mention that you think it is no longer relevant for EDM producers to make albums. Why is that? “I think that’s probably true for the entire music scene these days. It’s hard to say it so explicitly, because some people still love albums and certain artists still like to create them, but the fact is fans are mostly picking and choosing their music now. This is because streaming has changed the culture of how we listen to music. I like that, but I also love albums. So I am torn, but as an artist, I don’t see myself making another album right this moment… but I never say never.” 35

Most of your releases these days are singles, but collabs, too. How do you manage to work with lots of different people and maintain a busy touring schedule at the same time? What role do you take in the studio? “I enjoy sharing ideas and working on different projects, so for me, collaborations offer a really good avenue for that. It stops me from getting ‘writer’s block’ because I am constantly going from one project’s vibe to the next. I’m lucky that my manager and her team understand my drive and help arrange my schedule so I can keep touring and keep making music, whether on the road or in a studio, which is my preferred method. I’m a perfectionist in the studio, but it’s only because I want to make the best music I can possibly make.” Perhaps your most unique collaboration yet is the one with the Metropole Orkest; first you made a set intro, and now a collaborative show is coming up. What brings you to work with an orchestra? “I love what those guys are doing. It really started when I was in the Abbey Road Studio back in October, and they played me some music by the Metropole Orchestra. I was captivated by the emotion they captured and just felt I needed to work with them and do something special. First off I wanted to do something for my Ultra Music Festival set, so we reached out to the Orchestra and from that the collaboration came about. The feedback from the fans was so positive that we discussed doing something bigger. ADE felt like the perfect event, us all being Dutch natives, so we set up this one off show to give the fans something special for the ADE week.”

DAYBREAK SESSIONS

ERICK MORILLO MAINSTAGE | 12h00 - 14h50

Waking up in paradise is unlike anything else – that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Tomorrowland’s asked some of the world’s very biggest DJs to play a different kind of set in the mornings. The type of gig they vaguely remember from back in the day. A warm-up set? Yes, but - don’t be fooled - not as you know them! The Daybreak Session today is by none other than New York City’s Erick ‘More’ Morillo. Daybreak Sessions are three-hour-long marathon sets and give experienced DJs a chance to really show their audience where they’re coming from. Morillo’s case is interesting, as he is extremely diverse. Many of you may know his most famous 1993 song ‘I Like to Move It’, which came out under his alter ego Reel 2 Real. The song turned out to be so successful that it became known among insiders as ‘an A&R manager's wet dream’. Anyone in the business would’ve loved to sign an artist with such tremendous songwriting qualities. Morillo’s early life brought him to places few Westerners got the chance to discover. Born in New York City, Erick traveled to Columbia, the country of his parents. It is in Cartagena that he was first introduced to typically Latin genres such as salsa and merengue. When Erick turned eleven, and his family decided to move back to the United States, he was already DJ’ing at wedding parties. A few years later, as a teenager, Morillo befriended ‘Little’ Louie Vega, an upcoming producer at the time. Like Erick, Louie had a Latin background, but he also had a great feel for pop music and advised Erick to focus on vocals. Erick took his friend’s advice to heart and Strictly Rhythm, the most important house music label in New York in the early nineties, showed interest in his music which led to the eclectic producer scoring hit after hit after hit. Morillo’s Daybreak session will no doubt be a blend of house, Latin and pop, with possibly some Jamaican flavours. We can’t wait to move it – can you?

DON DIABLO FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY MAINSTAGE | 19h30 - 20h50

Dutch future house producer Don Diablo explores previously unknown territory on his new record, ‘Future’. Dancing is not the only thing you can do to music, so on his poppy new album, Don wanted to go out on a limb and see if he could make people chill to his tunes as well. Ahead of his undoubtedly energetic Tomorrowland set, he talks about new choices, looking into the future, special relationships with fans, charity projects, and about being starstruck by someone… Yes, it also happens to those who are stars themselves! ‘Future’ turned out to be a record that has you looking ahead in terms of sound as well as feel. Can you elaborate a bit on that? “Well, there was one person who wrote something on my Facebook page, saying he expected more future house songs on the album. So I explained to him that I’d just scored fifteen number ones in the Future House charts on Beatport in a row, and that I really wanted to make a record where I could show another side of myself. Music comes in many forms. Sometimes you can dance to it and sometimes it makes you want to chill out or feel other emotions. As an artist, you want to grow, and at this time I felt like showing a more personal side of myself, musically as well as lyrically. ‘Future’ has become a very personal record with lots to explore on may different levels.” On the album, you create a crossover between future house and future pop. Tomorrowland knows about future house, of course, but how would you describe future pop? “To me, ‘future’ stands for a certain way of producing music. A good producer can create music in various genres and still

retain his own recognisable sound. So there are certain types of melody you can find in my dance records as well as on those records that aren’t necessarily made for playing out in clubs or on festivals. Future pop is more about the lyrics, the melody and the general feeling, and not only just about 'the drop'." You value the connection with your fans, the Hexagonians, very highly – more so than many other DJs, it seems. How did this special relationship come about? “My fans have really helped me to grow as an artist and as a human being. Whenever I feel down, I think about the happiness people experience when they listen to my music, and then I always find the energy I require to continue what I’m doing. Everything I communicate to fans comes from me personally. I don’t just produce my own music; I also produce my own music videos, design the clothes I sell on my own fashion label, the artwork for my records, and I fully control my own social media as well. I hardly sleep because of it, but I don’t mind. What I get back from my fans is absolutely worth the hard work.”

I’m planning to do more notfor-profit shows so we can work on a better future together. You’ve been working on a charity project, can you tell us something about that? “For my ‘A Better Future’ project, I’ve performed in 37

front of crowds in fourteen countries where people could decide how much they wanted to pay themselves. I performed for free at these shows and 100% of the proceeds at the door went to KWF, a Dutch charity that fights cancer by funding research. I’m planning to do more not-for-profit shows so we can work on a better future together.” Your upcoming show Future XL will be your biggest event to date. What can we expect? “Thousands of Hexagonians will gather in Amsterdam, where I will play an extra long set with mostly my own music, including my biggest hits as well as brand new productions. In addition, the stage production will be next-level in lots of different ways. ‘Future’ will be the central theme. Other than that, I don’t really want to give away any spoilers. People should just come and see for themselves on 8 December in Amsterdam!” As a down-to-Earth superstar, do you ever get starstruck by someone anymore? And do you have any stars in mind who you’d like to get a remix request from? “I’ve ticked quite a few boxes as far as remixes go. I’ve done them for Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Madonna, Rihanna, and Bastille. I’m proud to have worked on those tracks. Still on my list are The Weeknd, Radiohead, Daft Punk, Bon Iver, and Kanye West. I don’t get starstruck too easily, but one time, when I happened to be in conversation with Will Smith, Jamie Foxx, Gwen Stefanie, Beyoncé and Jay-Z all at the same time, at a party in New York, I really did feel the urge to send a selfie to my mum.”

DAYBREAK SESSIONS

MARKUS SCHULZ MAINSTAGE | 12h00 – 14h50

Every Daybreak Session is different. What they have in common is that – after munching down your cheese croissant, scrambled eggs and fruit de bois smoothie – they lure you to the heart of Planaxis for some excellent chilled-out morning glory. They provide sounds you wouldn’t normally hear at a Mainstage the size of Tomorrowland’s. While most Daybreak Sessions are pretty eclectic, today’s three-hour-long wake-up call comes from some who’s excelled in one particular style: trance. Your selector’s name is Markus Schulz. This German DJ is a very in-demand remixer. Madonna, Depeche Mode, Jewel, and Fatboy Slim have all had their songs tranced up by Markus. His production work gradually brought Markus to headline positions on festival bills all across the world: from good old Dance Valley in the Netherlands to Creamfields in the north of England and from Las Vegas’s famous Electric Daisy Festival to the equally iconic Ultra Music Festival, also in the US. With releases on Armin van Buuren’s Armada, Tiësto’s Black Hole and Sony Music’s dance music subsidiary Ultra, alongside a previous #10 DJ Mag ranking, Schulz is one of the stars of the trance scene. Even as the genre has moved towards round and sweet melodies, Schulz’s production sound always remained in your face and bombastic, which led a fan on Twitter to dub him the ‘unicorn slayer of trance’, a mock name Schulz ultimately adopted as an honorary title. So how can someone who calls himself a unicorn slayer ease you into the day? Good question! Schulz’s own sound is pretty harsh, so starting off a sunny day is not the first thing you’d expect him to do. The good thing about the Daybreak Sessions is that the DJs are always experienced enough to bring their challenge to a brilliant end. Markus Schulz warming up the Mainstage on Sunday, what will that sound like? Frankly, we don’t know, but what we do know is that we’re all in for a massive surprise. Planaxis, bring it on!

The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

B E LG I U M

CURTIS ALTO FOCUS ON GLORIOUS SUNDAY B-EAT | 14h00 - 15h00 The two brothers known as Curtis Alto are going rowdy on the Tomorrowland grounds again, with a Gathering set, a Mainstage set this Saturday, a set at the Live stage during Weekend 2, and a set at the Brewery. They can count some of EDM’s big-shot DJs among their fans and their livesets are full of their own songs, bursting with energy as they blend in percussion, synths, launchpads and all sorts of other musical instruments. After their brother Max passed away earlier this year, the duo has had and is still having a very hard time – but they are back to honour his legacy with what’s bound to go down in history as a set of legendary performances. Ahead of Weekend 1, they discuss the state of their career and their performances. Guys, who is Curtis Alto? Where did the name come from? “Curtis Alto is a name we chose for this project because it sounds like just one person, while in reality, there’s more. Curtis just sounded like a dope name – woulnd’t everybody want his name to be ‘Curtis’? The Alto part came from us writing a track with alto-violins at that moment.” Are Cultis Alto’s roots in electronic music or rather more elsewhere? “Ever since we were young we’ve been playing music, us three brothers, mostly guitar and drums. It wasn’t until later that we discovered electronic music and started experimenting with it – a lot. When we finally wanted to release the music that came out of

our experiments, we went looking for the ideal format for it. We didn’t see ourselves as a typical band, nor as actual DJs. And that’s where the decision of combining instruments with DJ’ing came from. It all started by buying a little mixer, into which we plugged our instruments, forwarding that signal to the DJ booth. But even that DJ booth has since disappeared from our live setup.” You’re often called a crossover act; a rather broad and vague term. Does ‘crossover’ mean anything to you? How do you see yourselves? “It’s always hard to describe yourself, but we think it’s fair to say that the most important thing regarding our music is that our sets have their very own identity. That is to say, we don’t want you to be able to mistake our music for anything else. Our process starts off with live versions of songs, and from there on we kind of remix them by keeping their vital characteristics on point, but also adjusting them to the environment or stage they will be played at. Another way of working is taking a lyric we wrote and building a song all the way up from the initial – and quite sober – melody. Maybe that is why the term crossover comes up, but we definitely don’t see it as one of the main characteristics of Curtis Alto. We just make the music we feel like making.” Do you feel as if the actual live aspect has been disappearing in electronic music? Is your way of performing a way of counteracting that trend? “It’s not really a counteraction, because we simply felt 39

that this was a very natural step in our personal process. It wasn't necessarily inspired by others. We made electronic music, we played instruments, so the idea of combining both simply seemed dope to us. We do feel that playing live brings something extra to the table. That’s just our feeling, though (laughs). And there’s more movement going on on stage, which is always nice!” You’ll be performing no less than four times at Tomorrowland this year. What can we expect? “Well, we will play a few DJ sets, in which we simply play music we like. We’ll be playing only our very own material during our livesets, with only a few exceptions. What’s more, pretty much everything we will play is unreleased yet, so we’re really looking forward to performing these songs! The sound we’ve evolved to is a bit of a combination between house, elements of disco music, ‘modern’ synths, melodies, but also some pretty raw sounds. And a big bunch of energy, of course! We’ll bring our electronic drums, vocoders and synths along, using one massive controller that brings all those pieces together and gives us the opportunity to trigger, edit and produce our tracks while playing them. That allows an immense amount of freedom in our sets.” What’s in the future for Curtis Alto? “The last few months have been very rough on us, and they still are, due to our brother Max passing away. He’ll be forever in our hearts. But we’ve always been positive and want to stay so in the future. Max will be with us at Tomorrowland somehow, that’s for sure.”
