360° OF MUSICAL
MAYHEM
The Elixir of Life – the perfume of Tomorrowland – is one of electronic music’s strongest and most illustrious scents. Fueled by dynamic soundscapes and permeating every genre barrier, the fragrance grows stronger and more vigorous with each decibel of sound, as we prepare to conclude another fascinating Tomorrowland chapter. Let the infectious, musical essence guide you through the mayhem from the hardest-hitting techno presented by Dave Clarke to the subwoofershaking frenzied sounds of Yellow Claw. Follow it from Oliver Heldens’ infatuated future house vibes all the way to the Pussy Lounge where Kutski will show you how to Keep the Rave Alive. And if an old-school ending is what your heart desires, head on over to the Mainstage and witness Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike slay out the final minutes of madness with a vinyl set.
TIMETABLE CHANGES There have been several last-minute changes to the timetable. Look for your favourites on p. 28 to make sure you can catch them.

You saw fire in the sky and a great display of lights, and you smelled the spices of the great tree in the valley. Perhaps, you met a

mouse at the Opera, or a pack of wolves at the Magic Mirrors. The experiences that you’ve had enriched you – both in your knowledge of the art of extraction, and in the growth of your person as a whole. Both will be of assistance as you head into this last day of Tomorrow. It is important that you go in head high, senses clear, and with all of your unwavering energy. Visit every place you haven’t been yet, uncover all you did not yet know. Only that way will you finish our celebration, tonight, holding in your heart your own concoction, your Elixir of Life.

ANOTHER INCREDIBLE DAY Do you know that cliché saying, the one about the middle child always being left out? Well, that sure didn’t count for the middle child of the Elixir of Life! As we started this second day (or third day, for the people of the Gathering) things just rocketed sky-high. The weather cooled down to a very pleasant and mild level, giving your body a breather. Rather than spending energy on puffing and sweating, you got to dancing instead. Incredible Saturday was just that: incredible. Whether you were playing basketball with your beer bottles, using the garbage cans as the ring, or waving your inflatable octopus arms at the Cubanisto stage:
Up this high, we’ll never hit the ground Don’t look down See that sky, we’re gonna reach it now
an adjective like ‘crazy’ just doesn’t cut it. You went to get some extra herbs and spices to add to your Gin Tonic at the Lipton Leaf stage, you got your motor running with some of tomorrow’s headliners at the Mazda Sound of Tomorrow Island, which was flooded with young talent. At times it did appear that you were all working hard collecting footage for the Tomorrowland aftermovie, as we saw a lot of smartphones and GoPro’s capturing the whole experience - put those little demons of technology back in your pockets, guys, the true experience is happening right in front of you, in real
life. We’ll take the pictures, you take on the party. Speaking of the experience, there were no complaints as far as the music goes. Those who’d rather roam the underground were able to get their rocks off with the likes of Jonas Kopp over at the Kozzmozz stage, Johannes Brecht at the Diynamic stage and a live set by Agents of Time at the Cafe d’Anvèrs stage. But there was plenty of awesomeness left for the rest of you, as Solomun, Afrojack, and Many Moore lead you into the night.

THE DAY
The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
Day one is done and dusted, and day two ready to commence. Everyone is waking up at their own pace, while the sun is warming up the day. As you enter the DreamVille grounds, the perfect melting pot that makes up the People of Tomorrow evolves in front of you. To the left, a group meditation session is just about to commence, while right across, people are turning it up a notch. Hardstyle blasts your way, and it’s not even 10 a.m. yet! But the best part is, it’s all on good terms – the open vibe of Tomorrow unites people from all walks of life, right here on DreamVille. From up-tempo beats to downwards-facing dog; let’s have a browse on the campgrounds for an international update.
FROM TENT TO BACKPACK All your camping gear, whether new, broken or outworn, is welcome at the Reuse/Drop-off Points. Here, Love Tomorrow has partnered up with a social workplace. They function as a thrift store where functional gear is resold, but they also turn broken materials into new things. Your old tent can be turned into ponchos or backpacks, banners can be used to make bags for bicycles and tent poles can be melted and made into metal bar stools. To make things easier for you, big trucks will be parked between the Red and Blue DreamVille zones to drop off your unwanted items. Minimum effort, maximum revenue!

Lukas and Mikael (Tsjech Republic): “This is our first time and we are already too tired. Luckily the main things we want to see are tonight, so we have plenty of time to get into the mood first.”
DROP BY AND CHILL OUT
Martin (Denmark): “It’s my 29th birthday today! I wish this was real champagne, but I’m sure my friends will get me a little drunk today. Birthday sex? I have a girlfriend. That’s not a problem, just a hurdle!”
5
If you haven’t been yet, now is your chance to explore DreamVille’s latest addition; the Chill Out area. Opposite to what the name might suggest, you can do more at the Chill Out than just relaxing. There is a tennis court and a beach volley area, and you can team up with or against your friends in a game of table tennis or beer pong. And don’t worry, it’s definitely geared towards those with a more chilled-out mindset as well. Have a leisurely meal at DreamVille’s Bistro, catch up on some snooze in a bean bag or take one of the hourly morning yoga classes!

FRESH OUT OF BED
Waking up at DreamVille has become a routine these past days. A little bit infatuated from last night, heads pop out of tents one by one. Some still have make-up from last night, a memory painted on their face, and some have make-up from someone else. The rest of the body fiddles itself out of the tent after the head, and feet quickly find flip-flops. It’s time to freshen up, so you head over to the showers. And then, something magical happens. With every drop of water, the fog that’s taken up residency in the heads of last night’s party animals clears and makes room for the day to come. DreamVille, make good use of the showers today, because for only 2.5 Pearls, they might be just what you need on your last day of madness.
Jesse (Australia): “We haven’t been to bed yet. I’m not worried about being too tired though, I’ll absorb all the good energy from all these amazing people. Plus, the magic Unicorn will help me out. I flew him all the way here from China, aeroplanes are overrated!”

HOUSE OF MASK Belgium
On the outskirts of the festival terrain, hidden next to the Opera stage, is the Witness Cubanisto House of Mask: an exclusive area so secret you need a heat-activated MAGICAL FRIDAY map to locate where it is. Guests enter through the draped door into a black hallway. Once inside, you’re in an entirely different world. Deep-house, house, The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. The staff and bartenders have their faces painted in glowing neon greens and oranges to coincide with the mask theme (and by the way, The clock is running. Make the most of today. Tom Verhulst, Cubanisto’s Today is a gift.their That's why it is called the present. supervisor, says they wanted to bring something special to Tomorrowland this year: “When you enter, you don’t know what to expect. People need to come and discover this place.”
THE-REPORTERS
Caz and her friends from South Africa told us that the trap worked: they had no idea what to expect. “It’s full of surprises,” she says. And right she is: as you set foot into the darkened hallway, you’ll notice your shoes starting to glow and as you walk further, the music will begin to grow louder until you step onto the dancefloor. There, we found Candi, who shared with us that this was her and her friend’s first drink of the day, and that it is the perfect refreshing drink to start off her day at Tomorrowland.
DO YOUR LAUNDRY! It doesn’t really matter if you live close by or have to travel thousands of Mieles to get home. Nothing is worse than coming home exhausted after Tomorrowland, opening your suitcase and smelling your dirty underwear from a weekend full of madness. That doesn’t have to happen though. In a different scenario, you come home slightly disappointed because you have to wait a whole year before the madness is starting again. But at least you can open your suitcase to the fragrance of fresh flowers emanating from your squeaky clean clothes. Why? Because you were smart enough to go to the Miele Laundry Garden before you left!
THE MYSTERIOUS
SCULPTURE
At the place where the two legs of the bridge cross a surreal-looking work of art rises from the ground, extending like an umbrella over the passing crowds beneath. Since it’s a popular place to gather with friends and decide on what stage to go to next, many people are standing still and wondering what the immense sculpture represents. Mealeen from Germany thinks it’s like a tree spreading its branches to expand into the sky. “It’s a nest,” according to the hesitating Mitchell from Australia, “maybe from a bird, or a dragon.” Jeremy from France has a hard time guessing until suddenly he gets hit by a surge of inspiration, and with a fulfilled smile shouts out: “I know, it’s a Pokemon!” Little do our budding art critics know that the sculpture is actually an integral part of the bridge, created by Arne Quinze and inspired upon the Ancient Greek images of Nikè, goddess of victory. Victory, in this case, for the People of Tomorrow, in their quest for a more peaceful and better world. The sculpture is admittedly abstract, but once you know what it is, isn’t it a beautiful symbol?

SWINGIN’
Love sparkles everywhere on Tomorrowland, as couples of lovebirds swarm around the place. Some of them will stay together for a lifetime, and some of them will spread their wings and go their separate ways after this weekend. But one thing is the same for every couple: every duo thinks they’re made for each other. Is it always that obvious, though? We rolled around Tomorrowland and found eight couples that were confident enough to take this test and switched them up. Can you tell who belongs to who?

LOVE TOMORROW We, the People of Tomorrow, care about the future. We can’t change history, but we can change the course of what will happen next. Every year, Love Tomorrow raises the bar to inspire us to recycle and prevent waste. The most notable addition this year is the Recycle Kit given to every citizen of DreamVille. The garbage bags provided in these make recycling a breeze: there are blue ones for plastic bottles, metal cans and drink cartons
as possible. Why? Because Mother Earth gave life to all of us and everything around us – but her resources are far from limitless! Unsorted and unrecyclable waste is burnt in furnaces. The materials used are thus destroyed forever, meaning that they can’t be used again, forcing us to take new ones from the Earth. To recycle is to Belgium prevent this from happening. DIMI & MIKE VINYLLY GOING OLD SCHOOL man has dared to go before: playing a vinyl-only set at the Tomorrowland Mainstage. Tomorrowland Today spoke to Dimitri to measure up the duo’s stress levels.
They’re DJ Mag’s number one DJs in the world, these two Belgian brothers, and they were born and raised in the area around Boom. Their rise to fame runs pretty much parallel with the history of Tomorrowland; Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike are the reigning kings of the festival and they’ve pretty much conquered the rest of the world since their first appearance at Tomorrowland in 2009. Though leading the top of the big room house world, these two brothers graduated from the school of hard knocks. They learned things the hard way, paying their dues from the moment Dimitri bought his very first vinyl record as a kid. Today they’ll be rolling those dice once again, doing the unthinkable and going where no
You guys sure went in guns blazing with that vinyl-only intermezzo during your shows at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp in December. How much fun was it to get that old-school groove back on? “It was absolutely great fun! That felt just like the 16 year-old me spinning vinyl in the attic at my parents’ house. Although it was quite a big venture to play a vinyl only set in an arena with 18,000 people in it. And it’ll be a challenge at Tomrrowland as well, because these days the backline and technical setup aren’t adjusted to playing with vinyl anymore. A problem we had to counter at the Sportpaleis, for instance, was the fact that we had audio feedback through the needles of the record players. Fortunately, we were able to set things up perfectly in the end. But over there it was just us. This weekend Martin Garrix will hit the stage just before us, so there’s very little time to set everything up. So yeah, that sure does bring a little tension with it.” We can imagine! That vinyl set also featured some cool rave classics and
10
even more obscure old-school tracks. Was that your way of surprising the audience once again? “You know, I just spin my favorite tracks. Of course you need to take the circumstances into account. Some of my top tracks need 5 to 7 minutes to really ‘get there’, you know. Those are hard to fit in a 30-minute set. So the songs I chose had to be my favourites, on the one hand, and on the other hand, they had to be easy to mix in very fast. But it’s fair to say that that was exactly what we sounded like when we started out years ago. And it was great to relive those times once again.” Is playing devoid of all expectations and prejudices something you miss sometimes? That feeling of just stepping into a club, armed with nothing more than just a case of records to convince the audience? “Missing isn’t the right word, but it’s definitely that kind of variation that keeps it all fresh and fun. I mean, it’s just as fun to step into Café Mambo in Ibiza and play a deep house set. But that doesn’t mean I’d be willing to do that five times a week. Our retro vinyl set was a super fun thing, but it was the element of change that made it extra special.”
B ELGI U M
What was the reason for deciding on a vinyl only intermezzo? Was it in some way meant to counter criticisms? “No, it actually came into being really spontaneously. I moved into my new place and came to collect my record collection at my mother’s house - for years she has been nagging me about how all those boxes were a nuisance. So I went to collect them, and when I connected my record players and started spinning those vinyls again it felt so damn good! It felt right to give a try Belgium on a bigger scale. It was a candid idea, THE-REPORTERS really.”

What did the old school look like for The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. is history. you? What clubsYesterday did you go Tomorrow to? is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present. “We were at Cherry Moon (an iconic house club in Lokeren, Belgium) and The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Illusion (a dance club just Today as is iconic a gift. That's why it is called the present. in Lier, Belgium) a lot. But we also frequented the Sportpaleis for parties like Hardcore Overdrive and Thunderdome. Those were the nights you just couldn’t miss out on!”
Did you go out to party? Or was the main goal to check out what other DJs were doing? “I’m afraid I’ve always been that annoying guy who stood in a corner somewhere looking at the DJ going ‘I can do better than that’ (laughs)!”
“I’m afraid I’ve always been that annoying guy who stood in a corner somewhere looking at the DJ going ‘I can do better than that’ ” You don’t do fancy dance moves? “No, I really don’t. That’s why I became a DJ, haha!” Let’s get a bit nostalgic: what was better in the early days? “That’s all so very relative. But if there’s one thing, maybe it’s that the lifespan of tracks seemed so much longer back then. And I think we’ve got the internet to ‘blame’ for that. Back in the day you went out to clubs to hear new records, there was no Shazam hell, there weren’t even cell phones yet - so you had to go ask the DJ what he was playing. Nine out of ten times he refused to tell and you had to try and read the label on the record. The following day you’d ride your bike to
the record store, tried to explain what track you were looking for - and usually they wouldn’t have it in stock. Next you had to wait three months for your order to arrive because it had to be shipped from Italy or wherever. Plus: you paid a hell of a lot of money for it as well! But that also meant that when you finally got that record in your hands, you easily played it for one or two years. Nowadays, aside from your own songs, it’s almost impossible to imagine that you’d play the same track for longer than three months or so. Again: I’m not saying it was better back then, it was just different. Things go faster now. You play a track live for the very first time and in less than an hour it’s available to the whole world. You reach a lot more people a lot faster. Before, tracks needed way more time to grow and reach a bigger audience. But like you said: that’s nostalgic. If there’s one thing I don’t miss about the early days, it’s dragging along all those kilos upon kilos of records everywhere I went (laughs).” There’s still some dinosaurs out there claiming that you can only show your true DJ skills by playing vinyl records. Are they right? “Well, if there’s one thing you can say it’s that no, a record player doesn’t have a BPM tap - unless you connect it to a laptop. So yeah, they’re kinda right. Although CDJs also allow you to loop stuff and so on, things you can’t do with a record player. Purely looking at the beatmatching bit, you can say
11
that it is true that vinyl allows you to truly show your skills. If you were to ask the average young DJ to mix a few LPs with a record player, I’m sure he’d get a bit anxious. On the other hand, the same goes for ‘older’ DJ’s who are asked to loop stuff with a CDJ - they’d
have a hard time as well. But as far as I’m concerned, the one job a DJ has is entertaining his crowd by means of the records he selects. And whether you’re a beatmixer or not, the biggest skill a DJ can have, in my opinion, is the way he can make a crowd go completely bonkers.” Amen to that!

While many visitors stop to take a selfie with these scary but friendly giants, no one seems to understand the origin of the curious manimals. And you don’t want to start your day without a fresh cup of caffeine, so what about a cuppa prepared by a famous coffee barista? If you are looking for a little boost to kick off your last day at Tomorrowland, you can find the Alpro stand at the Marketplace in Dreamville.

The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
QUALITY TIME WITH SUNNERY JAMES, RYAN MARCIANO, MOTI AND JULIAN JORDAN The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
In the press village, established artists and groundbreaking talents are interrogated by TV, radio, and sometimes, a real newspaper too! In the meantime, they have an opportunity to catch up with each other – there’s not many a congregation of so many top-of-the-bill performers as Tomorrowland. In between preparations for their respective sets, we sat down in the press village’s fake grass with Sunnery James, Ryan Marciano, MOTi and Julian Jordan. All of them are good friends, but as it turns out, they can still compete and reflect on each other’s styles. Here’s how we got to know them better.

The clock is running. Make the most of today. Time waits for no man. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.
Now that we’re all here, let’s begin with an easy question: who of you is the best DJ? Ryan starts off laughing: “That’ll have to be me, because I have the longest hair.” Sunnery James: “But I have the largest hands!” Ryan: “But seriously, I don’t have any idea who the best DJ is.” Eventually, everyone present agrees on MOTi. “You’re the most versatile. But you should return a bit from EDM back to your early techno days,” Sunnery declares.
Ryan wants to urge Julian to keep on finding his own style. “You’re the biggest DJ and producer talent of the Netherlands for sure. So try to develop that gift into your own language.” Julian wouldn’t change anything about the others: “Every single track of MOTi’s is full of energy. And Ryan and James, although they’ve never produced an enormous hit, have a huge reputation as DJs just because of their mixing work, and I respect that deeply.”
And who has the most beautiful girlfriend? Julian: “I have a beautiful girlfriend, but unfortunately she isn’t here at the moment.” Hesitantly, MOTi claims his significant other is the hottest, adding, “I have to say ‘mine’, because she’s watching us right now!” And indeed, one female member of the boys’ entourage smiles significantly. Meanwhile, Sunnery James skips the question. He has no girlfriend, but a wife, and we all know that that’s world famous top model Doutzen Kroes.
If you had to trade places with one of the other DJs, who would it be? “Julian, for sure,” James tells us, “he’s so young and on the rise. While I’m now happily married with kids, I would love to experience that time in my life again.” If Ryan would have to trade places it would be with MOTi, “but that’s only because of his girlfriend,” he adds with a devilish grin. Boys will be boys, right?
What would you change about each other's music? James has some friendly tips for MOTi’s work. “I know you’re good at mixing, I understand the road you’re walking and it got you far. But it’s time to step back from EDM a little now, and return to the things you did with Groovenatics.”
Do you play each other’s tracks? MOTi loves ‘ABC’ (featuring Sander van Doorn) from Ryan and James, while Sunnery and Marciano have been playing MOTi’s old Groovenatics hits for over eight years. With everyone admitting to playing music of the other DJs, the discussion ends up in a lot of back-and-forth compliments. It’s high time for some rapid-fire questions.
15
No thinking: Techno or House? James, Ryan and Julian go for house, while MOTi prefers techno. Drum or Bass? Ryan tells us he prefers bass while James picks drums: “That’s why we compliment each other!” MOTi goes for drums, and Julian selects the bass. Tiësto or Armin? Suddenly, the noisy group of friends fall silent – apart for some sighs and the uneasy noise of hesitating top DJs. Ryan breaks the silence: “If I have to choose, it has to be Tiësto.” James elaborates: “We grew up with Tiesto, the god of all DJs, and the four of us are all following his legacy.” Everyone nods, reminiscing of their personal memories of the legend who’s already played two shows at Tomorrowland this year. A couple playful jabs and jokes later, the four funny dance musketeers jump up and move on. They have to prepare for a long night, a night during which each of them will get on stage to deliver a dazzling performance.

He is signed to Spinnin’ Records, but at the same time publishes his harder stuff with Disciple. We heard rumors that he’s working hard on a new, mysterious project this summer, but that he wouldn’t dare miss a chance to visit Tomorrowland. Eager to discuss, we catch up with him just as he arrives, wearing designer pants, a white T-shirt and a friendly smile.
So why are you constantly refreshing yourself? “I’m always on my quest to become the act, the artist, that I would love to be. And every time when make a big transition, I’m getting closer to that goal. I think the difference between becoming a live act and merely producing songs is like the distinction between painting and photography. You can paint the same landscape and sing the same songs, but every time the result will be different, while with photography and music production you create something solid and unchangeable. For the same reason that I want to do more live acts, I didn’t create a set list for tonight. I’ll just be playing anything that feels right for the crowd. I love to shape a unique moment when I play my booth, and the crowd has a say in that too. Together, we create a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience!”
Hey Fox! It’s good to see you back at Tomorrowland. Do you have any good memories of your first time at the festival last year? “Sure! I remember that I played at three o’clock in the afternoon at the Smash the House stage. It was really exciting for me, since I was only used to playing DNB and dubstep shows. Tomorrowland was quite a different game for me. But actually, it was really crazy. I had decided to play only my house tracks, since that’s what Tomorrowland is all about, but the crowd made me feel really comfortable. I spontaneously mixed in some of my heavier stuff and whatever else popped up. The party went totally rampant when I played ‘Sweets’!”
In the meantime you just released ‘No Fox Given’. Isn’t that quite a far cry from a house EP? “Yeah, that EP was made for a totally different scene. In the USA I’m mostly known for my dubstep. The dubstep scene there is like the drum ’n bass scene over here. So that release was mostly made out of love for that other part of my producing persona. In the future I’ll return to house, though, and I’ll even do more real songs. I’m planning to do my own vocals in the next productions, creating something between a pop song and a house track – something that will be a huge leap from everything I’ve done so far.”
It’s certainly true that you are really versatile. How is this reflected in your production process? “I produce some of my most popular hits in merely two days, while others take weeks. Sometimes a great track is made when you’re just having fun, trying stuff out. I love to experiment with different approaches. Since I’m a multi-instrumentalist, I can switch instruments and play the same melodies in a different framework. Nowadays house music takes itself so seriously, perfecting every pitch and beat, but at the end of the day it should be just about having fun and making something new. When you start making up a new track you don’t know where you end up, that’s exciting and terrifying at the same time.”
What’s up with the fox? Where did that trademark come from? “As you probably know, my first DJ alias was Stan SB, but I wanted to cut myself loose from all the experiments under the name I came up with when I was just 13. My best friend nicknamed me Fox, since when I grew my beard my red hair came out really prominently. Adding my last name, Stevenson, a new DJ alias was born. And since I’m currently moving into a totally new direction I thought about changing my name again, but I’m glad I didn’t!”
You’re up in two hours, are you excited or terrified now? “I feel relaxed, but also a bit excited. In the end, of all the festivals, this is the one. You can get the same line-up in the USA, but people will still come here from all over the world for the grand vibes and the awesome production. I hope next year I’ll be able to present my new project to the Tomorrowland audience, but let’s throw a great party tonight first!”

WINE & DINE
Name: Fontanafredda Serralunga d’Alba Barolo Country: Italy
Tomorrowland offers you everything to enjoy the good life, and let’s be honest, there is no such thing as a good life without a good glass of wine! Tomorrowland Today did a taste-testing of Tomorrow’s best wines on a sweltering Saturday afternoon, and to make life even better, we’re sharing the ins and outs with you here.
Name: Rock Angel Country: France Year: 2014 Grape: Grenache and Rolle
Year: 2009 Grape: Nebbiolo
To make the most of the experience, we call in the local walking, talking encyclopedia of wine. As we head to the wine bar located between the Tulip stage and the House of Books, he confirms our thoughts: it’s a rather exclusive feature for a festival to have a wine bar like this. We’re in for a treat! We start off with one of the most popular wines they serve, a Chilean Chardonnay. It’s fruity and easy to drink, with hints of melon, grapefruit and banana: a well-rounded Latin mix, with sweet but zesty notes. A flashy bottle catches our eyes next. This hip packaging contains the fresh Rock Angel rosé, which is perfect for a warm day like this. With its spicy undertones, it manages to defy the girly image rosé wines are known for. The only way is up, and so we make sure to end on a high note with the bar’s most expensive bottle: the Barolo. This little red devil looks fiercer than it tastes. Instead, it is well-balanced and full-bodied, with warm tones of vanilla. This warm embrace is definitely a recommendation to end the day with. On a gloriously sunny weekend like this, you don’t need an excuse to enjoy a glass of wine. But as today is the last day of Tomorrowland 2016, there is no better time to treat yourself to a glass or two than right now!

Rosé wine
What: Sushi Where: Oishii Sushi, Grill & More
After an extensive dinner furnished with wine and coffee, it’s time to get the party going again. And what better way to do that than to treat yourself (and your friends) to a refreshing cocktail! On each side of the wine bar, you’ll find a cocktail and a Gin Tonic bar, respectively. We’re not done taste-testing just yet! The most popular cocktail served here is the good old Mojito. This ultimate summer drink is prepared with rum, lime, mint, crushed ice, a bit of cane sugar and club soda.
Why: For more reasons than just the pink-on-pink colour combination, rosé and salmon are a match made in heaven. Salmon contains a lot of good fatty acids, which work really well with the fruity acidity of rosé wines. Aerosmith already said it well: pink is our favourite colour.
Red wine
What: Barbecue Pulled Pork Where: American Barbecue & Grill Why: If you think ‘red wine’, you think ‘meat’! So go to the American Barbecue & Grill for a pulled pork sandwich. This trendy slow-food is cooked until it so soft that it can easily be pulled from the bone. We confirm the classic combo of red and meat to be a great choice at Tomorrowland, too.
If you’re not in the mood for a mojito, the strawberry Caipiroska is a delicious alternative. This variation of the Caipiriñha is a sweet treat for the mouth as well as for the eyes. A table full of these joyful drinks immediately sets the tone for a day full of laughter and love.
DESSERT What: Chocolate Where: Callebaut Chocolat
And last, but certainly not least, is a drink that needs no introduction. Gin Tonic is probably the most popular drink in the universe right now, and things are no different at Tomorrowland, where it’s topped off with summery strawberries. A true treat for the eyes as well as for the nose and the mouth!
Why: You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy chocolate! Eating chocolate is always a good idea in our book, and Belgium is internationally known for their chocolate for a reason. Belgium’s best chocolate, from Callebaut, goes really well with red wine. But if you’re ready to move on from wine, a strong espresso makes an amazing pairing as well.

T H E H O U S E G R A N D PA He’s called ‘The House Grandpa’ (De House Opa), and he’s been a living legend ever since his playful dance moves went viral online in 2012. The real festival connoisseurs must have met him multiple times, since he’s been going to festivals for over ten years, dominating the dancefloor. We joined 84 years-old Johan de Vries backstage and accompanied him on his first steps into Tomorrowland.
So this is your first time at Tomorrowland, Johan. What are your expectations?
I notice young women are especially fond of your moves, what does your wife think about that?
“I’m so excited to be here, backstage, but I’m even more curious to see the festival! I hope the grounds will be as great and colourful as in my imagination. My usual strategy is to walk around the festival area until I hear techno somewhere, my favorite style of music, and then I’ll just start dancing. Tomorrowland will be very special to me, since it’s my first time visiting a festival abroad.”
“My wife isn’t jealous at all! She loves that I’m enjoying myself so much, that’s an enormous support. I love to dance with the girls, especially when they’re coming from all around the world. And I’m always open to hugs.” Tomorrowland’s theme this year is ‘The Elixir of Life’. What is your secret to getting so much out of life at this age?
Your fame skyrocketed in the last three years, reaching hundreds of thousands of views on Youtube. Do you like all the attention?
“Dancing to music is my Elixir of Life, there’s nothing I enjoy more and I don’t need anything else. To all the people standing passively to the side during festivals, my advice is to stop drinking alcohol and using drugs and instead let the rhythms move your feet. I hope I can set an example for these youngsters by showing you can still dance at my age, just by being absorbed by the music. But can I go now? I hear some great techno and I can’t wait to start dancing!”
“Yes I do! People from all over the world recognize me. A while ago at Edit festival, two girls from New York came up to me and told me they knew me from the internet. Since the video went viral in 2012, I made two appearances on Dutch television and received a free backstage pass to Tomorrowland. Both things I wouldn’t have dared to think of before (laughs).”

People of Tomorrow, this was truly magnificent. Last night, UNITE – The Mirror to Tomorrowland – set up a live connection with Colombia, Mexico, Israel, India, South Africa, Germany and Japan. The sets of Nicky Romero, Afrojack, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Axwell /\ Ingrosso were streamed live in those 7 countries, intermitted with live DJs who made the atmosphere on their very own UNITE stages. Dave Clarke is known for always hosting a quality array of techno greats, and this edition will surpass all standards with sets from the likes of Vitalic, Green Velvet, Scuba, Marcel Fengler, Pierre, and of course the mastermind himself.

MARTIN
SOLVEIG FOCUS ON GLORIOUS SUNDAY MY HOUSE | !9h00 - 21h00
This French DJ released his first record in 2002, making him one of the only ones to survive a full cycle of styles in dance music. Now, dance sounds similar again to the way it did when he started out - but on the other hand everything is different, too. Except for one thing: Martin Solveig is still Martin Solveig, and he’s still ready to fire up the stage with a breath of fresh house air. We know a guy who had a little bird whisper in his ear that Martin Solveig would bring a fresh new concept to Tomorrowland: the My House stage. And premiering such a new venture on Tomorrowland is a prospect that’ll get any DJ’s engines running, even if that DJ’s seen as much over the years as Martin Solveig has. “I’m really very excited about it,” he says. “It’s the first time I’m hosting a My House stage at a festival. I have so many crazy memories of my Tomorrowland sets, and I’m pretty sure this special one will count for many, many others!” He has done residencies at Pacha Ibiza with his My House concept before, though. But what exactly does it stand for? And how does he wish to translate that successful clubbing concept to the language of the People of Tomorrow? Solveig: “My House is a real musical journey. It’s everyone’s house, really, so my guests are more than welcome to do whatever they want and give their own definition of what My House stands for. And as always, I’m really lucky to have my friends sharing this stage with me. They’ll bring their talent and their own vibe to it. There’s a ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’ that floats in the air and makes people dance and smile at My House Pacha Ibiza, and I’m pretty sure that’s a feeling the People of Tomorrow will relate to quickly. I’m happy to share that feeling with everybody with a heart for house music.”
It’s not always easy putting together a line-up, but Solveig has managed to bring in some roaring names like A-Trak and GTA. But having a well-known and resounding name isn’t nearly enough to get an invitation to Solveig’s stage. “The most obvious reason why I’ve invited these people is the fact that they’re super talented, not only as producers but also as DJ’s. GTA behind the decks is just massive, for instance: you can always count on them when it comes to rocking crowds. In the past I’ve worked with GTA on ‘Intoxicated’ and we both feel that this My House stage is a very good way to write a new chapter together.” But hosting a stage on Tomorrowland is just one of the many, many endeavours Martin Solveig has put his back into this summer. My House, after all, isn’t just a oneoff event at Pacha, but a 20-date residency. And it’s not always a breeze to maintain the proper level of quality and idiosyncracy, especially on an island drowning in cool concepts and special events. Yet Solveig manages to overcome every obstacle. “There’s nothing like My House on the island. My guests come from different scenes, whether it’s pop music or underground, and yet they feel at home. This mixture of genres is really unique. I’ve always liked the idea of bringing different artists
27
together and I’ve always striven for open-mindedness to be at the heart of my stage.” And that’s exactly the key to his success: great, honest house music that has no intention to narrow things down or to limit itself. It’s music that hasn’t got a single care in the world for something as vague or relative as boundaries. That’s the Martin Solveig brand, and it has become a true seal of quality over the years. As far as the future goes, things are still shining bright on the horizon for the Parisian house mastermind. He recently released the banger ‘Do It Right’, featuring Tkaj Maidza, and has a few more cards up his sleeve, although he wishes to keep the us in the dark on his new release plans for a little longer. “I’d love to tell you about it but I can’t just yet. I’m working hard and I’m super-pleased with what’s coming next. You’ll just have to take my word for it. The My House project will keep me busy for some time now, but I can tell you this: as you know I have directed 90% of my videos myself, and I’m thinking of trying a bigger playground one of these days (winks).” Well, that’s the kind of cliffhanger Game of Thrones could only dream of, isn’t it?

FERRY CORSTEN
A great poet once said: ‘wake up and make love to me’, and this applies to Tomorrowland, too! And there’s no better way to open your eyes in the morning, stretch yourself and do a little dancefloor yoga than with a nice and freshly sliced set of deep and techhouse beats. Whether you’re out to scare away that vicious hangover with some laidback beats, or you’re one of the music junkies who race from stage to stage and from DJ to DJ craving for a dose of nothing less than top quality product: the Daybreak Sessions are just the thing that will satisfy all of your needs. Each day the Mainstage is kicked off with a three hours long set by a headliner who will serve you a solid breakfast of house and minimal to prepare your stomach for the rest of the day. And remember, kids: breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Today, we have Ferry Corsten waking up next to you. Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Ferry Corsten’s illustrious career is exemplified by a passion for music that began as a hobby and spiraled into a full-blown profession. Today – just like things were in the beginning – Corsten’s skills lie in his ability to coax the maximum emotional impact from electronic dance music of all genres. Ferry doesn’t limit himself to just trance, there’s also some nice seasoning of progressive house and electro within everything he does. He remains and has always been ahead of his time, making music that becomes a template for others to follow. At today’s Daybreak Session, surely he’ll be more diverse than ever!

PAUL ELSTAK FOCUS ON GLORIOUS SUNDAY PUSSY LOUNGE | 21h30-22h30
Paul Elstak is the name – Offensive is the game. Some say he is the original creator of hardcore, the uptempo, relentlessly pounding genre that became en vogue in ‘90s Holland and has never stopped evolving. If it weren’t for Paul, we would never have hardcore on the map like we do now. A true player to the game, this man is constantly putting out new tracks, always original, always hard, and always in his own, tongue-in-cheek and world-famous style. Paul, does being the reigning godfather of hardcore come with some kind of pressure? “Not really. I just do my thing. I still produce hardcore tracks and other harder styles like freestyle. And I also run my hardcore label Offensive Records (Paul is also the exlabelmanger of Terror Trax and Rotterdam Records). I give new talents like The BeatKrusher, The Unfamous and Radiate a chance to release their hardcore tracks and coach them a bit along the process.”
“At Tomorrowland I represent hardcore at the Pussylounge stage. The Pussylounge concept covers all harder styles - and that’s exactly what makes it so popular. The audience will gradually experience different styles on one stage and at the end of the night the hardest style (hardcore, obviously) will finish the party with the kind of bang that will resonate throughout the rest of the summer. And that’s exactly why I often play at the end of the party (laughs).”
material to launch at that event during my set.”
What does hardcore actually stand for to you? “Hardcore stands for the hardest style of house. It’s a culture that started in Holland and spread all over the world. It’s a way of life for the hardcore fans. They are very dedicated to the music. You can often recognize them by their fashion - track suits, bomber jackets, Nike Air Max, hardcore T-shirts - and their hairstyle; often bald-headed, but less so than in the 90’s.”
A recent interview in a national Dutch newspaper said that you’re addicted to colouring books. What’s so appealing about colouring? “Well, I’m not really addicted to them. But when I have nothing to do (which is rather rare) I like to do colouring for adults. It’s very relaxing.”
This year’s Tomorrowland is not only about colour, but also about smell. What’s your favorite smell in the world? “The smell of coffee. I really, really, REALLY need coffee to wake up.”
The absolute heyday of the scene was in the ‘90s. How do you see hardcore fitting in in an environment like Tomorrowland as it is today? And what is your own mission this weekend?
Does that imply that playing a colourful place like Tomorrowland is something special for you? Is it the kind of place that inspires you? “Playing at a major event is always inspiring. I want to give something extra when playing at a big event or festival. Weeks beforehand, I start producing some new

One might suggest that orange or pink wouldn’t be the best colours to describe the hardcore-feel. Do you see your own style as a way of bringing more colour into the scene? “My style is definitely not dark. I’ve always meant and wanted to create a more uplifting party atmosphere during my sets.”
A scent is often connected to a certain memory or event. Having travelled around the world, is there a certain place, venue or festival you remember because of how it smelled? “I sometimes play at a party that’s held in a hall where they normally sell cows and horses. You can imagine how that smells…”

He enhances new and old tracks to higher heights, flawlessly stacking melodies towards a cunning drop, as we can hear in his remix for Dr. Dre’s ‘The Next Episode’, which has reached over 100 million plays on Youtube. On stage he puts all his enthusiasm and love into his pounding beats, lifting the crowd metres off the ground. This year he released his new album ‘Gouldian Finch’, containing tracks full of high-pitched vocals and crispy clicks. Prepare to take flight at the Barong Family stage this afternoon with San Holo!
Things have been going very fast for Amelie Lens lately. A release on Lyase Recordings with the support of Maceo Plex, her very own clubnight at Labyrinth Club and her first time at Tomorrowland are just a few of the recent endeavours of the Antwerp DJ and model. And all of that wasn’t left unnoticed in the international scene either. German techno duo Pan-Pat immediately recognized her potential and took her in to the Second State family, next to names like Michael Klein and BEC - not bad for someone who only recently brought out her first release. With her obsession for telling stories through sweeping gyres of sound, she exhausts search engines looking for new material to create that narrative. Constantly defining the parameters within the available resources and time, she plots to unleash well-timed, dramatic and super-tense climaxes. Amelie Lens is about to take you on one very, very intense techno trip.
SAM FELDT Bakermat & Friends 17h00 – 18h15 One of Holland’s finest exports, Sam Feldt, has been quite the tastemaker lately. After years of hard work in the studio, producing behind the scenes, Mr. Feldt decided that it was time to show the world his passion and love for electronic music by releasing his first tracks in the last months of summer, 2013. It wasn’t long until Spinnin’ Records scooped up Sam, leading to his first release on the label. His captivating remixes, as well as smash hits like his twist on ‘Show Me Love’ which was released in 2015, proved to be his major claim to fame. Sam Feldt is definitely an artist to keep your eyes and ears peeled for, the creator of a new sound infecting the scene. Sam’s unique tropical house sound is characterized by beautifully built melodies, magnetic atmosphere, and emotion packed in a tantalizing, often laidback groove.
MACEO PLEX Cocoon 19h30 – 21h30
Is it possible to zero in on the sound of the future by re-contextualizing music of the past? Maceo Plex’s meticulously crafted DJ sets aim to do just that. Ever since the nineties Maceo Plex has stood for a meticulously composed mix of techno, electro and house. Maceo toured the world and blew the roof off of some of the most famous clubs around the world like Rex, Cocoon and Fabric. In the meantime, he also started out with his alter ego: Maetrik, a project that was out to bring forth a bit groovier set of beats. Nowadays he has returned to his roots, going back to what the Maceo Plex name always stood for. He is on a quest to fulfil his need to inject feeling and funk into the world, and he’s already proving to be quite productive. Arm with his own deep and funky works of audio engineering, from 2011 album ‘Life Index’ to recent dancefloor smasher ‘Solar Detroit’, Maceo Plex’ Tomorrowland set will be one of galactic proportions.

Age is just a number when it comes to one of the scene’s youngest up-and-coming talents. Robbie Bergin, more commonly known as Throttle, sparked his passion for music at the age of eight when he learned to play Being an MC/Host often raises the image that we are the guitar. In Robbie’s early teen years, he was first exposed to dance music and got his very first glimpse just standing there to clown around and to make sure into the exhilarating world of DJ’ing and producing. Since then, Throttle has created his own signature twist everyone’s hands go up when needed. Well… that’s a on the dirty disco genre, and rightfully so. WATERMÄT
JOSH BUTLER
Versuz invites My House 16h00 – 17h30
Cubanisto’s House of Mask 17h00 – 18h00
Since the rise of French artist Watermät, dance music has never been the same. In previous years, French DJ/Producer Laurent Arriau was producing music for numerous artists. It wasn’t until 2013 when he decided it was time to share his own love and fiery passion for dance music with the world. Watermät started to spread like wildfire, and shortly after he was signed with Spinnin’ Records. And let’s just say the rest is history. Laurent’s music is praised for its headstrong sound combining major appeal with cool contemporary house music. Watermät has built himself an empire. Come witness this French sensation in the flesh starting at 15:30 at My House.
Hailing from England, Josh Butler discovered the house scene going out in Liverpool and Manchester. After his exams he started hosting parties for his fellow students and evolved within the house party scene. Taking a retraite to New Zealand was a fundamental step to sharpen his sound before returning to England to take over the European underground house scene. The release of ‘Got a Feeling’ was a milestone in the career of the British artist, securing his position as a prominent producer, already having proven his talent for live sets. Nowadays Josh, still fond of islands, is an established regular in Ibiza, playing clubs like Spektrum, Sankeys and Amnesia. Inspired by everything ranging from dub reggae and hip hop to ambient, preferably listened to on vinyl, Josh produces pure minimal house tracks. Get ready to have his solid sounds course through your body during his late afternoon set at the Cubanisto stage!
