Attention Loyal Fans,

TIMETABLE UPDATE!

Due to a printing mistake, the timetable included with the floorplan is incorrect about the mainstage. It shows the line-up for the wrong weekend. For the correct and definite edition, see page 24.

People of Tomorrow,

WELCOME TO THE LEGEND!

Ready?

Set! RAVE!

The Gathering may have been awesome, but the real madness starts today. Tomorrowland kicks off with Daybreak Sessions, which means three full hours of Eric Prydz at the mainstage. For those who are more tranceminded, the Trance-Addict stage offers a broad range of artists like Sean Tyas, Ørjan Nilsen and of course Paul Oakenfold himself. At Mad Decent twerking is mandatory, as Dillon Francis, The Partysquad and Diplo take stage, under accompaniment of Zeds Dead, DJ Snake and many more. The more underground techno vibes come from Carl Cox & friends, with Adam Beyer, Marco Bailey and Carl Cox himself. Is that all?

Yesterday’s Gathering began a whole new chapter of our story! No, it isn’t! Steve Aoki is bringing along Dirtyphonics, Joachim Garraud, a back-toback set by Felix Cartal & Autierotique and Belgian celebrity Coone. As you may have noticed, there is just too much to see, to hear, to admire, to dance to. You can’t catch them all, but where your favourites are concerned, you can damn well try. Be sure to check out the timetable on page 24, where you can find all the details about the musical styles you may encounter today.

Even though Tomorrowland itself is yet to open its gates, a better start to this weekend could hardly have been wished for. On Thursday, the sun shone and a city of tents called DreamVille was built, involving a lot of fiddling with lines, laughs and air pumps. Once everyone’s poles were erected it was time to head off and start the dance at the Gathering. Revelers were welcomed to a familiar sunand-moon stage, a vibrant yellow on the left and a calm nightly blue on the right, adorned with flowers and cogwheels. On it, a host of performers made sure the

early comers had something to practice the weekend’s dancing moves to. During the afternoon, some people took a breather at their camps and the lines for food and drinks at the Marketplace lengthened. Provided with nourishment, everyone was drawn back towards the Gathering stage where, by the time Murdock blasted out the final rays of daylight, a raging crowd had formed. Under the careful guidance of Wolfpack and Dimitri, Mike & Yves, the final hours of the night were danced away – and the magic of Tomorrow welcomed back onto DreamVille.

There’s a glitch inside my system, pushing through my whole existence Got me twisted, can’t resist this, something’s flipping all my switches And there’s no antidote KNIFE PARTY - ANTIDOTE

SIGHTS OF TOMORROW Besides its music, décor and beautiful people, Tomorrowland has a lot more to offer. In this daily travel column, we guide you through the little secrets that lie behind every corner. It’s magic all the way!

On this day, 6 years ago…

First of all, the One World beach is to be found under the eponymous bridge. No matter the number of beaches you’ve checked off your bucket list, no matter how many hours you’ve spent tanning on the sands, the cozy little beach underneath the One World bridge will become your favourite in no time. It’s on Tomorrowland, after all, and a great place to recover during a long day full of raving. Relaxed, nice and secluded and littered with enormous flowers, it will leave you stunned and slack-jawed at the absolute power of Mother Nature. Afterwards, follow the road

down to the I Love The ‘90s stage – for today will be sunny, with a chance of meatballs. The finest meatballs in town. Belgian TV chef Wim Ballieu, the grandson of a farmer family and the son of a butcher, has meat preparation running through his veins. As a child, his favorite dish was Flemish meatballs – and it still is today. The result is Balls & Glory, a range of handcrafted meatballs filled with things Wim loves. In other words, a mix of artisan mince, juicy fillings, and a modern touch. It’s a definite culinary must! And why not finish it all off with a smoke

at the Shisha Bar across from Radio Ultra Modern? A what, you ask? A shisha bar is an establishment where patrons share the flavoured tobacco of the shisha, or water pipe, from a communal hookah or nargile. Step inside a Thousand and One Nights fairytale, discover the allure of the Orient and sink into colourful pillows while enjoying an aroma of delicious flavours and fumes. Take a moment between dancing to come over and chill like you’ve never chilled before – before you know it, you’ll feel as light as Aladdin & Yasmine on their magic carpet.

A flying sea turtle came to De Schorre to watch over the People of Tomorrow! The History of Tomorrow goes on on page 29.

FRIDAY

JULY 25TH 2014

THE GLOBAL JOURNEY People of Tomorrow, the search for happiness has commenced! As you carried your keys to the town of Boom, you took your first step into the universe that is called Tomorrowland. Many of you literally traveled all around the world to get here, crossing oceans and continents. We came along on the last part of the trip, from Frankfurt to Brussels, to capture the travelers’ tales. As the plane that is to take everyone to Belgium arrives, the gate is already shaking on its foundations. A pre-arranged DJ is performing to warm up the waiting crowd. Enthusiasm and energy are on a level not usually seen at airports. When the doors to the aircraft are opened, however, the party seems to be over. “This is your captain speaking. Brussels Airlines welcomes you on board of this special flight to Tomorrowland. We hope you’ll enjoy your flight and wish you an unforgettable weekend!” After this communication, the uproar slowly returns – especially when the ‘fasten your seatbelts’ lights turn off. “On behalf of our captain, I’d like to ask you to keep down. Please don’t stand up, dancing is not allowed.” Not every person on the plane is surprised by this message. “To be honest I know what to expect,” says one passenger. “I visited last year’s Tomorrowland with the Global Journey so this isn’t the first time for me. My friends didn’t know what was coming! For them it’s the first time and I didn’t spoil the surprise, so I’m really curious about their reaction.” Shortly after, DJ Makasi – the surprise – walks to the middle of the plane. “I’ve never performed in an airplane before so I’m very excited. There’s not so much space, but the Brussels Airlines crew managed to create a spot for my decks which is great.” In no time, the stewardesses conjure up his turntables and the crowd goes absolutely insane. “Helloooo, People of Tomorrow! Are we excited? Let me see your hands in the air, come on!” At first, the passengers don’t seem to believe what’s going on, but within seconds the plane is bouncing through mid-air. “I visited last year, but I went on my own,” Odette yells in between the beats. “This is the first time with a Global Journey package for all of us! The DJ on board was a big surprise; the whole journey was full of surprises so far. We had big expectations about this weekend, and with such a start they might just come true,” the young lady from Saudi-Arabia continues. “I’m here with my friends Saleh and Omar. He’s from Syria!”

FRIDAY

JULY 25TH 2014

Not everybody starts off this weekend with luck on their side, though. Simon, for instance, disembarks from the plane on crutches. “I’ve just had surgery four weeks ago. It will have to heal for another two weeks before I’m allowed to start walking without those sticks again. It might get a little rough walking around the festival site, but luckily I’ve got Dominic with me. I’ll be fine with him.” And so, crutches or no crutches, the amount of love shown this flight is highly promising. As it was only one of 133 to Brussels Airport, originating from all over, we have no doubt that there’s a warm weekend ahead of us!

FLYING FACTS 1,128 Partypeople from Geneva are visiting Tomorrowland by plane. Flights have been booked from all over the world, even including Mauritius, Nigeria and the Isle of Man. There were 113 party flights for a total of 247 party hours at 10,000 feet of altitude!

Many passengers were on another plane before attending this party flight from Frankfurt. Constantinos, Andreas and Alex transferred from an airliner out of Cyprus. “This is not the first Tomorrowland for any of us! I’ve been twice before so I know what to expect,” Constantinos tells us. “But to be honest: that’s why we’re here. There is really nothing like Tomorrowland on Cyprus, nothing in the world is as special as Tomorrowland!” The energy of all these people packed into one plane is intense. Everybody seems to be proud of their origins; flags appear out of nowhere and are swung around like everyone’s just won the World Cup. “We’re proud to represent India this year,” Josef starts. “Sebastian, Dariel, Max and I have been dreaming about attending here for years, and now the moment has finally come. After this weekend we’re heading to Holland to see what’s happening in Amsterdam, and we’re planning on visiting Dance Valley next weekend.”

After staying away from the internet as much as possible, not to ruin the all the surprises that are waiting for you, you can finally begin the quest for happiness! Maxime “It’s my birthday in a few hours! Not only Tomorrowland is celebrating, me too. But hold on, I’m trying to set up five tents at once. I’d rather do that than lift the heavy groceries.”

Ethan & Juan “We’ve traveled close to 8000 miles now. Tired as hell, but it’s worth it! It’s our first major festival. Both of us graduated and landed a well-paid job recently, so why not spend the money on this?”

ALL THE WAY

FROM THE CONGO

“People from the Congo are as friendly as they get. Just like the weather, they’re warm and welcoming. When you’re all alone wandering around, they’ll come over to say hi, to help out a little. That’s the African way. The Congo knows how to party, whether it’s in the club or just on the streets, in little café. There’s no EDM scene at all however, everybody listens to r&b and hiphop. Even if they’re poor, they’ll throw a party. Why? I guess because life’s harsh over there sometimes, and they are determined to enjoy every peaceful moment.”

Maurice, Bob, Frank, Tim “Have you seen the poles of our tent? We’ve lost them! As if it wasn’t hard enough already to put this thing up. We’re not that good at spatial visualization, to be honest.”

From DreamVille

to dream girl Enjoying yourself on the camping? Good, but perhaps you would enjoy some company. If you’re single and ready to mingle, then these tips will most definitely help you out. Use them to find that great girl who can make your summer in Belgium unforgettable!

1. If you met a girl at a random occasion, you would also buy her dinner, wouldn’t you? Perhaps you can buy her French fries and treat her to a nice cold beer afterwards. Pay attention to what kind of sauce she takes with that! Is she a samourai? Spicy and adventurous. Mayo? Independent and aware of what she wants. Pickles? Unpredictable and trendy. 2. What you should definitely avoid is to, for lack of a better subject, turn to the cliché of bragging about how many girlfriends you’ve had in the past. Girls don’t kiss and tell either. 3. Also make sure to keep the number of encounters very low, at least per festival. Nobody wants to go home with an extra sexually transmitted friend in their pants... Besides that, be a real man and think about safety first! You can most definitely buy some condoms at the camping store. 4. Girls need romance! So make sure you hide your dirty underwear when you leave your tent open, and never forget that smelling your best will have great effects on a girl when you walk past her. Basic science! (And why do you think girls always look and smell their best?) 5. Did none of the above work for you? Or are you feeling a bit down about being rejected? No matter the circumstances, give a girl a compliment and you will get the brightest smile back! Being nice to a girl happens to be the unwritten law of seducing one. For more sex & seduction, see thesite.org or allesoverseks.be.

Camping GRILLMEISTER This year Lidl will be looking for the greatest master of the grill at the DreamVille campsite. How can you conquer the title of the one and only true Tomorrowland Grillmeister? Easy: just head over to the butcher shop, wrap one of the BBQ aprons around your neck, grab the grill tools, let the charcoal scorch and cook up the juiciest slice of meat you can. Post your picture on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the #Grillmeister hashtag and you might just become that one lucky griller to win an exclusive chopper flight over the grounds of Tomorrowland on Sunday!

The Wall of Love

Wim Tellier

This weekend all of us have a whole lot of love to offer. But for those of you that share the bounce of every heartbeat with a special someone, every single day of every single year, Floor came up with The Wall Of Love. They invite you to come over and present yourself in an overflow of beautiful and colourful flowers for a photo-shoot that will make you feel as if you were walking through the garden of Eden! Would you like to pose with your one and only true love – your ‘poepie’, if you will – your BFF, or just your mates or the ladies? No problem. And in addition to the photo-shoot opportunity, they have a hairstylist ready to design the perfect flower look to go with your outfit. Floor’s Wall of Love will be open and welcoming you to their flowery brand of happiness all day.

Medical Information Got a headache? Or a hangover? Medical supplies are available at the pharmacy in the town near Tomorrowland: De Lindenboom, Grote Markt 2, Boom. The pharmacy is opened on Friday from 9 – 12 am and 1.30 – 7 pm,

and on Saturday from 9 – 12 am. If you need immediate medical attention, however, do not hesitate to go to the nearest First Aid point on DreamVille or Tomorrowland. And remember: always keep an eye out for your friends!

WE LOVE OUR NEIGHBOuRS Tomorrowland had a treat for its neighbours last Wednesday. While some of you were already traveling on a Global journey, they had their own party to thank them for their hospitality. And to celebrate Tomorrowland’s ten-year anniversary of course! Over 4000 people from Boom and Rumst visited the gathering especially organized for them. The locals received a tour around the festival site and enjoyed a snack and a drink as well as the music performed on stage. There was also special entertainment arranged for their kids. Together, they toasted to ten years of beautiful memories as they inspected this year’s Tomorrowland. The neighbours’ stories about the People of Tomorrow are often positive, appreciating the business and liveliness the festival crowds bring. The privilege to keep up with such a reputation is something to be proud of – and a little quiet in the villages or a friendly conversation with the neighbours is all it takes!

FLOATING Reflections

& UNITY Portrait Tomorrowland has always supported art in lots of different ways. This year creative partner Canon invited artist Wim Tellier to make two art projects which are fed by photography. The idea behind these projects is to push creativity and imaging technology a giant step forward, enabling you to capture your unforgettable moments of Tomorrow. ‘Floating Reflections’ is an organic motion art impression, best seen from the new One World bridge. Wim will capture your happiest experiences with a Canon EOS camera and fish-eye lens. These pieces of art will be printed at the Tomorrowland grounds on Canon wide format printers at 1.5m by 1.5m. Mounted on rafts, the posters will be added daily to a growing exposition near the bridge throughout both weekends. The project will be a sediment of the magical moments that you live through this weekend. For ‘Unity Portrait’ forty-five full-frame Canon EOS cameras will be mounted on a rig to take one single picture with all of them at once. This results in a photograph, taken from within the mainstage, in which every single person can be recognized. There will be preannounced moments to take the unity portraits, one on every day. They will then be published at tomorrowland.com/unityportrait in an especially developed app. You can find & tag yourself and your friends, and share the souvenir with your loved ones who weren’t there. Don’t miss this moment, and strike a pose!

UNEXPECTED REQUEST Tomorrowland received a heart-warming request last week. The Poor Clares (‘zusters Clarissen’) of Boom declared their love for Tomorrowland and asked if they could have a Tomorrowland anniversary flag. They’re always looking forward to Tomorrowland, so they would appreciate some Tomorrowland goodies, they said. According to the buzz on social media, the nuns’ question surprised many of you. The Clares pretty much went viral!

Today’s Treasure Tomorrowland is a magical land full of surprises, as you are currently about to discover. During the weekend, there’ll be a little piece of treasure hidden somewhere for you to find. See it as a little quest of your own. It will take some effort to find the envelope containing the key to the prize, but there’s a clue for you to figure it out too. Think fast, as there are probably a lot of others looking for the treasure as well – but once you’ll find the envelope, you’ll know what to do. Happy hunting!

Of course the festival’s organization didn’t hesitate to oblige to the request and they immediately received an invitation to come and visit the official Tomorrowland neighbours’ event last Wednesday. The Sisters were honoured and extremely excited. “Every year we’re praying days in advance for good weather and a good outcome,” they elaborated their enthusiasm. Unfortunately for them, it wasn’t all good this week. When they got home after visiting Tomorrowland, they received the sad news that sister Amata (94) had passed away. The thoughts of all the People of Tomorrow are with you, zusters Clarissen!

Save the land , Monkey plant a plant Business! During the previous Tomorrowland weekend, Stefan Mayer and his friends from Austria decided that they’d not only do their part for the environment by keeping their campsite clean, but also wanted to walk the extra mile. They grew a brand new plant in the Red District on the DreamVille campsite and left it next to a message to this weekend’s campers. We’d like to know if their work of art is still there – if you see it, send us a pic!

Meet Heidi. Not your average partypeep at Tomorrowland! She’s the third and most lighthearted member of the Pary Heroes Inc. She was hesitant at first to have her picture taken by Kenneth, also a member, but once busy posing she shone more than King Kong on top of a huge skyscraper. If you see her this weekend, take a selfie with her and her trusty Belgian flag. She knows she likes it!

Surely you’ve got flags, inflatables, flower belts and all kinds of other funky accessories with you. Why not decorate your home-for-theweekend with all of that too?

The best way to start your weekend A temporary settlement of 30,000 residents. Ambassadors from Brazil wearing football-styled bras with inflatable palm trees on their heads, going coconuts. Three of the five Power Rangers walking side by side with the masked avenger from V for Vendetta. ‘Hi’s’ and ‘How are YOUs!’ flying around. Broken English as a universal language. Countless high-fives. This is bivouac 2.0. No camouflage, but full-out club colours and fluorescent war paint. Don’t duck down but look up, show yourselves. See and be seen. It was the Gathering of a congregation that fights for its right to party. At night, they rest here in their tents, although ‘rest’ is a relative thing in DreamVille. With Murdock, Raving George, Wolfpack and everyone who came before them reigning from their fortress of light and sound, lying down was the last thing on your mind. The Gathering was the pre-party. ‘Pre’ as in pretty, precious and prefect. Uh, perfect, that is – and it was.

These groups got together for a group hug at the Gathering. If you haven’t already, make sure to gather into a cuddly pile every so often over the next few days, too! 15 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

Yes, I’m pretty sure you would look good in my bed.”

So, what’s appening this weekend? Whether it be timetables, maps, artist information or just plain and simple maps of the festival and DreamVille: the Tomorrowland app has all you need. A quick search for ‘Tomorrowland’ in the Play or App store and you’re good to go. Have fun!

hAPPiness fresh, look good! Yeah, we know: you already look smashingly good this weekend and your beauty is beyond comparison. We Play House Recordings is just what the name suggests, a label releasing house music in all its shapes & forms. Their ethics date back to the days when house was just a name for a single genre. Red D started We Play House Recordings as an outlet for the music of San Soda, a friend of his he met in their hometown Deinze, near Ghent in Belgium. And ever since then, they’ve followed the same philosophy: there is no such thing as tech house, there is no such thing as deep house, there is simply house music, good or bad. The results can be heard at numer 3 on your map.

When it comes to Paradise, Jamie Jones sure knows what he’s talking about. For this Tomorrowland edition of Paradise, Jamie Jones has carefully chosen a great series of residents that consists out of cuttingedge artists from across the music spectrum. Expect talents such as the infamous boundary-breakers Art Department, the ever mind-blowing Richy Ahmed as well as others like wAFF, Dixon, Russ Yallop and Mark Jenkyns. Paradise is a hub of exceptional music, continuous energy and dance floor enthusiasm, and it can be found at podium 9.

Mad Decent is the name of the LA-based record label spearheaded by Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo, successful record producer and also leader of dancehall project Major Lazer. Over the years the label has helped introduce Brazilian funk and Angolan kuduro to clubs around the world. The label’s roster varies from Baauer to drum and bass icon DJ Fresh to meme rapper RiFF RAFF. As Diplo himself puts it: “If it doesn’t exist yet, we want to help it be out there.” This weekend he brings Dillon Francis, DJ Snake, Flosstradamus and more to stage 11.

ERIC PRYDZ HERALDS THE BEGINNING OF TOMORROW For the first time this year, each day of the festival will begin with a Daybreak Session. One artist with three hours to fill at the mainstage: that’s the recipe for a great start to the day. On Friday, you’ll be welcomed by none other than Eric Prydz. Eric is a mysterious figure. Even though he has had his fair share of worldwide hits, the Swedish producer shies away from the attention of the media. Whereas many artists go on worldwide tours, give as many interviews as they can and are very visible on social media, Eric chooses not to. He hasn’t given an interview for almost 6 years. Instead, he retreats to his studio to spend his time and brilliance on running his well renowned labels Pryda and Mouseville. This unique approach to the life of a musician, making hits but keeping himself

away from the media, has provided Eric with the international allure of a superstar DJ, while earning respect from the more underground scene as well. His very first, very own artist album is rumoured to be released very soon. Until then, we can enjoy tracks like Pjanoo and Proper Education, a rework of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall. The latter even got Prydz nominated for a Grammy, and the music video got adopted by Greenpeace as part of one of their campaigns. Join Eric at Daybreak Sessions today!

Yellow Claw FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY Dim Mak 23:15 - 00:00 soil after conquering every stage the Netherlands has to offer. Recently they gave away a hell of a show in Las Vegas. “That was a really mind-blowing experience. Magical, even. The sun just went down, the lightshow was spot on and we had trouble seeing the end of the crowd, somewhere far away in the back. There was so damn much love at that moment, Bizzey just had to do a stage dive at the end of our set.”

Veni, vidi, party. Yellow Claw comes, sees, conquers and leaves the party only when the last man standing can’t stand no more. The Netherlands has already succumbed to their ferocious quest for glory, and now they’ve set their sights on the rest of the world. DJ Nizzle, Jim Aasgier and MC Bizzey started only three years ago with a successful residency in Amsterdam’s Jimmy Woo nightclub, and can now be admired on the biggest stages worldwide, with Tomorrowland as an absolute highlight!

The three friends are as musically diverse as it gets. “Basically, we’re just doing our thing. Somehow that works really well. We’ll continue to play everything that sounds awesome, regardless of genre.” Recently they even invited gabber veteran Distortion (Rotterdam Terror Corps) for a gig. “He’s a true legend, and has been for the last two decades. Tracks made by Rotterdam Terror Corps have influenced our sound in so many ways, so when a festival gives us an all-clear, it only makes sense to invite an act like him.”

“There are a few places of pilgrimage in the world for those who love dance music. Tomorrowland is such a sacred place. For us personally it means a lot to return here, as it was the first event of this stature where we got a spot to play our music. Our set was sick, the crowd was sick, the delicious lobster we ate afterwards was sick.” Yellow Claw is quickly becoming a household name for everyone into partying hard. They’re known for being eclectic, energetic, a guarantee for mayhem, and for thinking outside the box. A very big part of their success can be traced back to the high amount of interaction they have with their fans while playing. “If you ask us, the key to success lies in a couple of things. Work very, very hard, never listen to negative fools and always (always!) try to improve yourself in every way possible.” Focus, determination, a clear vision of how music should be played; Yellow Claw has got it all. And they risk it all to deliver the highest quality of music and that true party feeling, time and time again.

Keeping it fun while being together on tour all the time can be a bit tricky. The friends have found a way to keep things flowing on a personal level. “We’re completely different characters within the group. Socially, but also professionally we’ve found some sort of way to deal with this diversity. Even to make it into a strength, rather than a source for bickering. We’re a bit like the Spice Girls, with Bizzey being Sporty Spice, Nils Baby Spice and Jim Posh Spice.”

“Our strategy to take over the world is simply by making the best music.”

Amidst all the touring and producing, they made time to prepare for Tomorrowland of course. “We have made a kind of unofficial anthem, together with Alvaro, called ‘FLAGS UP’. And we’re going to stop eating days in advance, so that we can dive into all the magnificent lobster!”

“Our strategy to take over the world is simply by making the best music, to surprise the crowd every time with unique sets and to take along our musical friends while we’re at it.” Yellow Claw has set foot on foreign

Armin van Buuren

Mainstage 21:15

Armin van Buuren’s set last year at the mainstage has grown out to be a legendary one. Not only because of the music, but mainly because of his emotional announcement that he just became father to a son. He dedicated his entire set to his newborn, a gesture that moved many viewers to tears.

This year Armin returns once again to do what he does best, to take you on a trip to paradise. “It’s not just love for music, it’s passion. It goes beyond liking, and beyond a hobby, it’s about a way of living. Music is essential to my life,” he has stated. This dedication has brought him to the very

top of the worldwide dance movement, leading the way as the #1 ambassador of trance. With his acclaimed ‘Armin Only’ tours he’s taking his events to a whole new level, with mindboggling visuals and decorations. Enough said. We’ll see you there on Friday!

Dillon Francis

Carl Cox

Coone

Dillon Francis does not give a fuck or shit: ‘I.D.G.A.F.O.S’, he calls it. Dillon does everything he wants to, which is mainly producing absolutely mindblowing moombahton (or other genres whenever he sees fit). The prankster from L.A. also does whatever you want him to, if you pay him. For a mere $750 he’ll do your taxes. For $300, he’ll prank call your mom in the middle of the night. He’ll even enlist in the army if you spend a million dollars. Why? Because I.D.G.A.F.O.S! That careless attitude, that free-minded spirit is one of the most charming things about Dillon, and can be seen in his performances as he tears the place up without any regards for the stiff rules of society. Mayhem may be the closest thing to describing Dillon on stage. Expect nothing. Expect everything. Let’s go one deeper.

Oh yes oh yes! Carl Cox is back once again and bringing a bunch of equally artistic friends along! The little boy who first laid hands on a set of turntables at the age of 15 has evolved into a sincere and powerful musical maestro. After meddling with disco and hip-hop first, he got into Chicago house when it didn’t even have a name yet. In the ‘80s he was on the forefront of the exploding British rave scene. In 1991 his debut, I Want You, was released on Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto imprint. A while later, Carl retreated into the more underground club-scene, staying true to the techno he helped create. “Techno drives home somewhere. It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you’re going. It’s scary, but wonderful at the same time,” he says. Nowadays Carl has a loyal fanbase and sells out major venues while also focusing on smaller, more underground parties. Let’s go on a journey with Carl. Oh yes!

Few Belgian artists are of such international stature as Coone. Only in his twenties, he managed to sell out one of Belgium’s biggest venues, blasting away in front of 10,000 hard dance minded people with Coone & the Gang. His roots firmly based in hardstyle, he does not shy away from working with artists outside the scene, like Steve Aoki. He’s even signed at Dim Mak, Aoki’s party empire. Combining the power of Dim Mak with the reputation of his own label Dirty Workz, Coone is taking his sound worldwide at incredible pace. Nowadays he’s touring the United States, Australia, Europe; the whole planet, really. Coone lives for the music. He lives the music. He is the music. And that may well be the reason he’s so damn much fun to see live on stage. Strap on your dancing shoes real tight, it’s going to go hard, harder, hardest!

Âme

We Play House 18:30 Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann are Âme. Âme is more than just good music, Âme is the future of electronic music. Instead of looking back at the past for inspiration, Kristian and Frank have made it their mission to provide you with sounds that you have never heard before. Filling up the unheard empty spaces others leave behind, they dare to venture across boundaries set by genres, time, instruments or ideas. They combine music with otherworldly visuals in their live-act. Also, they’re part of the driving force behind

the Innervisions family. This imprint is famous for their level of quality control, resulting in only five or six releases each year. Another notable thing is that those releases come with elaborate and unexpectedly beautiful artwork. The internet plays a crucial part within Innervisions, as they sell their music via their webshop, alongside fashionable clothing and books like Tobias Rapp’s Lost and Sound.

Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo I Love The ‘90s 00:00

When you’re thinking of the infamous ‘90s, Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo are certainly among the first names that come to mind. Who doesn’t know the melody of Wonderful Days, for instance? Together they produced some of the most famous happy hardcore tracks, but are also devoted to the harder gabber sound. Charlie & Theo always perform with a smile on their faces, bringing happiness to the dancefloor as

joyful as a sunny day, with rainbows, unicorns and hard-hitting kicks. Whether you were born early enough to have experienced the ‘90s to the fullest, or only after that, it doesn’t matter at the I Love the ‘90s stage. Young or old, Charlie Lownoise & Mental Theo are sure to provide you with familiar beats to lose yourself to.

Art Department Paradise 21:30

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner, Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, relevant underground producers out of North America. Kenny’s credentials date back to the late 80’s and include productions on Narcotic, Jinxx, his own Method 11/11 label and Turbo. The pair, despite

Paul Oakenfold Trance-Addict 20:00

Paul is on a mission. A ‘Trance Mission’. The legendary producer has returned to his very roots once again to spread the so-called ‘Full of Luoro’ sound to the remotest corners of the globe. ‘Trance Mission’ combines the very best in trance with stunning visuals, making it far more than just a cool guy behind fancy turntables. It’s a sophisticated venture into one of the bestloved genres ever, an undertaking to add a new generation to the fanbase that was there from

the beginning. He already set the tone for this new chapter with his famous Essential Mixes for BBC Radio 1, with the ‘GOA Mix’ as an absolute highlight. It fused underground trance with familiar film and radio samples. No wonder it was voted the best Essential Mix of all time by listeners of Radio 1. With this new show ‘Trance Mission’, Paul sets out to take trance to a level it hasn’t been before.

The result was an entirely new sound that drew cues from the best of both artists. It was a futuristic and raw, synth-driven, underground masterpiece, the start of a new idea and concept for the duo, and the birth of Art Department.

JULY 25TH 2014

2008

how Tomorrow came to last a decade When the domains of de Schorre, Boom, Belgium first came to life with a flurry of festival stages and dance devotees, the event’s moniker was oddly prophetic: Tomorrowland. The future held more than one tomorrow for the newly born land, and has until now graced us with ten editions – ten years – of the world’s most magical festival. How did Tomorrowland come to be, and whence comes its allure? This weekend, the final pages of each TML Today are dedicated to our origins. Every day, a different period in Tomorrowland’s history will be chronicled. Today, we treat of the years 2008 and 2009.

2008: DEFINITION OF MAGIC

2008

The first light rays to hit the earth on the twenty-sixth of July, 2008, carried an unambiguous message: this was going to be a hot weekend. Temperatures quickly blazed past 30 ºC as camping and festival filled up with the people of Tomorrow. All in good spirits, though; better to have sweat running down your back than rain running through your tent. Having set up shop at their campsites, people quickly made their way to the festival grounds where they were greeted by a more extensive Saturday programme than last year’s. Tomorrowland demonstrated its nose for future stars by booking Martin Solveig, Paul Kalkbrenner and Gareth Emery across three different stages. In between the dancing in the sunlight and the resting in the shade, a great atmosphere arose. Visitors who had been there in 2007 had happily returned to pass on the passion to newcomers. On Sunday, the addition of a few extra stages and enthusiastic day visitors only served to increase that fever. Again basking in sunlight, the crowd got rather hot and bothered – clothes were nowhere to be seen and it was shaping up to be the most naked edition of Tomorrowland so far. Although cause for eye-candy, the heat was nothing to be trifled with; some people succumbed to it, requiring

29 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

medical attention, though no one was seriously hurt. By and large, the festival thrived. Over the mainstage, an enormous and seemingly flying sea turtle sheltered dancers and deejays alike. In hindsight, it was the 2008 stage that started the trend of highly-detailed, intricate, indeed mesmerizing mains that continues to this day. And at night, under the turtle’s underwater wings, Armin van Buuren played one of his most memorable sets of all time. The weather gods chimed in with a rain shower, turning the laser show into an eerily beautiful light-storm, the most dramatic crescendo anyone could have wished for. Nature too, it seems, had taken note of the magical nature of this festival, and if not, visitors certainly had. Truly, the fourth edition of Tomorrowland was the one where you could taste it in the air: everyone was happy to be there, everyone realized they were becoming part of something greater. Magic had installed itself at the Schorre over the previous three years, growing in strength. It attracted attendees – the People of Tomorrow – from far and wide, and in doing so, ensured a bright future for itself. Everyone who was there was intent on coming back again.

FRIDAY

JULY 25TH 2014

2009: THE FIFTH FESTIVAL Word of mouth is a powerful thing, and for the first time in histor y, the fifth Tomorrowland sold out all of its tickets. Since there were forty thousand of those for ever y day, there were now twice as many people on the terrain as there were two years ago. At certain points, it showed; the festival had grown slightly too fast for its own good, and some bars and facilities had long lines to deal with. Apart from those hiccups, though, more was more. A massive mainstage was built in the same magical spirit as last year, but much more extensive. The purple creature that dominated it was lined with fountains, fireworks and performers. The tradition of incorporating large video screens, showing everything from the prettiest people in the crowd to visual magic tricks, was started as well. Up the hillside to the right a ski piste had been built with actual snow, on which people happily rode down on the back of – you didn’t guess it – crocodiles. As for the other podia, more and bigger hosting partners manned them than ever before. Aside from the Q-dance and Kozzmozz areas, which had both been going strong for a while, David Guetta commanded a

stage for a day and long-time Mysteryland partner Dirty Dutch, as well as famous label Defected in the House, also landed in De Schorre. Spots were reser ved for many more imprints, just like they had been over the past few years, allowing fans of all kinds of styles to mingle. Togetherness, after all, is one of the things Tomorrowland is about. After five years, it had become abundantly clear that due to the grand but loose organization of the festival, musicwise, exchanges could take place that normally never would. Fans of stadiumscale shows like Sensation would be there, at the mainstage, celebrating alongside underground clubbers come over from Café d’Anvèrs. And in 2009, they probably would have been doing this under the careful guidance of superstar surprise act Moby. His set, partially synced to a spectacular display of fireworks, was one of the fifth year’s highlights.
