SATURDAY

PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

WE ARE BACK WHERE WE BELONG Far and wide the Key has traveled, and today it finally found its lock. The machine has come to life. Yesterday marked the beginning of the tenth year of Tomorrow, and what a day it was. Clearly, the crowd – you – were looking forward to fulfilling the promise of happiness. After opening at noon, the grounds immediately filled up and the first dance steps were soon taken. Pouring out of DreamVille, party people were caught in the claws of Eric Prydz’ Daybreak Session. On

the other side of the terrain, day visitors discovered the walledin Opera stage. Tomorrowland harboured more nooks and crannies than ever and quite a few things about De Schorre had changed. With highly agreeable weather all day, veterans and newcomers alike used the afternoon for an exploratory stroll. In the meantime, the dance floors were lowered considerably by

thousands of feet. Towards day’s end there was jumping, there were cheers, there was wild movement fueled by waves of bass. Most of Tomorrowland ultimately gathered at the mainstage for a final performance by Knife Party. The instrument of happiness on which they stood had done its work. Will you help it breathe beauty into the world again today?

THE SOUNDTRACK TO SATURDAY Dozens of excellent DJs, here to make you dance all day! Isn’t it beautiful? Isn’t all of this, all of Tomorrowland, the beautiful fairytale you hoped it would be? As yesterday slowly comes back to mind, a blur of happy people and maybe a beer or two too much, we help you to focus on today. Every stage has a new name and a fresh line-up, just waiting for you to come on over. Be a superhero at Super

SIGHTS OF TOMORROW

Besides its music, décor and beautiful people, Tomorrowland has a lot more to offer. In this daily travel column, we guide you through the little secrets that lie beyond every corner. It’s magic all the way!

On this day, 3 years ago…

Nature lovers rejoice, you’re on to something! It turns out even science can’t deny the holistic benefits of tree hugging. It relieves stress and makes you calm, and besides, this is Tomorrowland, so if you want to hug a tree you damn well will. And nature needs a little love every now and then just as much as you do. By the route between the Opera stage foodcourts and stage 4, the trees have been knitted soft, colourful sweaters so you can hug them all the better. They’re a sight to be seen as well as touched. If you’re more of a sailor than an arboriculturist, though, follow

the road down from the day entrance and have a little rave on the waves of the lake at the Dream Island stage. Being a completely floating affair, and not as big as the Garden of Madness, the least you could say is that the Dream Island is not entirely stable. Whether it’s just the crowd stomping away in its intimate setting or an artist shuttle boat passing by, the pontoons that support it never stay entirely still. The dance floor’s to-andfro interplays with the rhythm of the music to create an experience markedly different from those other landlubber’s stages. Once

you’ve done enough surfing, it’s time to wrap up today’s tour with a trip down memory lane. Tomorrowland’s very own memory lane is located conveniently on the backside of the mainstage, connecting its two gates with each other. It is lined with canvas fences each depicting one of Tomorrowland’s 9 past editions. You may have seen those around the festival site before, but this is the most complete collection around – especially for those who just can’t get enough after reading the final, history-dedicated pages of Tomorrowland Today. Relive the past madness!

The first three-day chapter in the story of Tomorrowland was written! For more History of Tomorrow, turn to page 29.

Welcome to

“We just imitate the people next to us, roasting any food available,” this fellow says, while his sausages are getting blacker and the smell of burnt meat intensifies.

Wake up! Another day has come! Damn, you were out of bed early Friday. And even though the Gathering happened last night, you looked fresh and ready to rage all weekend! The barbecues were fired up already, the first beers got downed as though they were glasses of orange juice. Did you guys sleep at all? You brought along quite some noteworthy attributes. From the brightest of smiles to inflatable monkeys as well as, no way to put it mildly, dicks. With so many people, there are many stories to tell as well. The Marketplace

was full of people getting breakfast at the butcher’s or the bakery, or just hanging out by the fountain, trying to cool off a bit. One thing that stood out was the way people were treating complete strangers as if they had been best friends for ages. Love is the first step to happiness. And DreamVille was full of love. Love for your bed, for your breakfast, for your drink and for the neighbours. As breakfast is sinking in, get your pretty behind to the festival! It’s time, at last!

“We’re pacing ourselves a little bit, so we can smash it extra hard today, tomorrow and the day after that. Can’t have a heavy head when dancing at the festival!”

ALL THE WAY

FROM JAPAN

“In Japan people party hard,” Nick Sugiyama tells us. “The clubs go on ‘till the break of dawn. One thing about going out in Japan is that when you’re lying on the curb passed out, strangers will pick you up and take care of you. They even put back your wallet if it has fallen out. Safety is a big part of Japanese culture, and because it’s so safe, people tend to get wasted more easily. ‘Cause you know that when you can’t stand, it’s safe and random people will take care of you. Why? Empathy and caring for others is a strong part of Japanese culture.”

LOVE TOMORROW “Yeah, it’s not easy washing yourself without a shower. But we don’t have time to wait in the queue, we need to go to the festival as soon as possible!”

All drinks at DreamVille are served in EcoCups, which cost one and a half token apiece. This is done in order to reduce plastic waste – a serious concern for the planet’s conservation. You can exchange your cup for a token at the exchange points or the district houses. Alternatively, buy a new drink and hand in your old bottles & cups in exchange for new ones. Either way, you are doing your part for the protection of Tomorrow.

SATURDAY

“What our plans are? Just walk around a bit. Try to see everything there is to see.” But first, breakfast. ‘Cause on an empty stomach you can’t keep on dancing!

“Why pay for the shower, when you have the sun and running water available?”

“We don’t need much to have a good time. Just ourselves and some bubbles. Bubbles always make people smile!”

PICTURE PERFECT

Willem Huygebaert (Nightlife photography specialist with Canon Belgium) gives you some useful tips to take better pictures at the festival. Whether you’ve brought a DSLR or not, if you’re out to take photos, you might want to read these!

Today’s Treasure

1. Use the sun to your advantage. Look at how the light influences the shades in your picture. Sometimes, having sunlight fall onto your subject from a different angle can make it look “glowy”. Now that’s Tomorrowland!

Tomorrowland is a magical land full of surprises, as you are currently about to discover. During the weekend, there’ll be a little piece of treasure hidden somewhere for you to find every day. See it as a little quest of your own. It will take some effort to find the envelope containing the key to the prize, but there’s a clue for you to figure it out too. Think fast, as there are probably a lot of others looking for the treasure as well – but once you’ll find the envelope, you’ll know what to do. Happy hunting!

2. Take a burst of pictures. Even when it’s a posed picture, take a few pictures in a row. Oftentimes the moment when a posing group of people falls apart is the most spontaneous moment. There’s always someone who does something clumsy or who says something funny! 3. Look up. Tomorrowland is an amazing festival where there’s always something happening where you least expect it. Look up and capture what you hadn’t noticed before!

TREASURE HUNT HINT: ‘It doesn’t get more Belgian than this!’

10 YEARS OF BEER Ever since the very beginning, 10 years ago, Tomorrowland has been supplied with beer by Belgian brewer Maes. In order to celebrate the anniversary, a limited edition set of beers was designed in collaboration with the festival’s creative team. Each can is filled with 33cl of MAES pilsener, and each is uniquely decorated with a drawing based on one of Tomorrowland’s 10 editions. For 15

Art for Thought’s tiny Tomorrowland visitors have returned, and in great number! Can you spot the one below? If you find it, send us a selfie with it at today@tomorrowland.com and earn eternal fame!

I’m trying to change the world “You think it is politics that changes the world? Think again! It’s you and me. Day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute. We are the world. You have the power and with power comes responsibility. If you don’t like what you see… change it! You can make it happen. Right here, right now. You are the future. Ask yourself, what have you done to make things better today?”

tokens, you can lay your hands on a tray containing them all! At DreamVille, the Maes Limited Editions can be found at every bar; on the festival terrain, you’ll need to search closely, because only a few bars sell them. And for those who can’t get enough of these colourful cans, a special collector’s box can be won exclusively at maes.be.

FLOWER OF LOVE Over the past few weeks, Floor, the youth campaign of VLAM, has been looking for the ultimate Flower Couple of Tomorrowland. These are today’s winners. “Two years ago Matthias moved to Brazil to work and live there,” says his best friend Daisy. “Tomorrowland was the last festival he attended before he left, so naturally we had an incredible goodbye party.“ This year, after spending two full years abroad, Matthias is spending a short time back in Belgium. How awesome would it be to celebrate this together at Tomorrowland!” Because Tomorrowland is all about bringing people together, Matthias and Daisy won the Tomorrowland Day Pass! Today, their love will be declared forever in the name of Tomorrow.

Walking on happiness A bridge connects separated pieces of something: an island to the mainland, two pieces of text to each other, or human beings with other human beaings. 210,000 human beings, to be precise, connected by 537 metres of wood imprinted with their messages. Through these, they are connected to one another and to everyone walking the bridge between this weekend and eternity. Each single message speaks of hope, love, happiness and all the good in the world. This bridge is a symbol of what Tomorrowland is about: creating a place of peace and beautiful music in a world still too divided. Take a moment to look beneath you when you walk these planks.

It’s the middle of the afternoon as TML Today takes a look on the bridge that crosses the terrain from The Rave Cave all the way up to the mainstage. The majority of the crowd is just cruising along, on their way to the next artist, the next stage, the next moment of madness. Amidst all the fuzz a young man is searching for his piece of bridge. “I’m Noyan, from Turkey” he introduces himself. “I haven’t found mine yet. It says ‘Are you ready? The future is now!’ How I feel about my message being here forever? It feels kind of like being a bit famous. But I got to run man, my friend’s a way up ahead.” A bit further on, Bart is inspecting the messages beneath his feet with an intense look in his eye. “I’m due to play in The Rave Cave in a few minutes. I thought it would be a bit easier to find my message. Ah well, it doesn’t matter. It says ‘There’s something about Barto and Maruschka’. She’s my partybuddy. What the thing is about us? We are both able to switch off our minds and just go crazy. It’s a great feeling to not care about what others think of you. When we’re old, and my DJ career has ended, we’ll go back here to reminisce about all the great things we did, sitting next to our message. Which I’ll have to look for again some other time, I got to go and play some fine music.”

One people, one bridge, a thousand wishes.

Nainesh, Richa, Khushil, Ropal, Carl, Melroy, Lionel (Dubai, India & Australia) “We have tried so hard to get here. We saved money for three years, worked our asses off just for Tomorrowland. All of us work in Dubai behind a desk, as an accountant, at an insurance company or as a fashion designer. You can party in Dubai, but it’s nothing compared to Tomorrowland. There’s something of an EDM scene over there. But Dubai is a true melting pot of people and of music. From R&B to ‘EDM’ to bass music, everything is represented in the club circuit. Now that we’re here, we are determined to make the most of every moment. After this, we’ll be traveling to Vienna, Austria, to do some sightseeing before heading back to Dubai.”

9 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

Oscar, Robin and Asa have just found their plank. ‘Bridge to happiness’, it shows. They wash it clean with some water. “Ah man, this is the perfect spot! Right in the middle of the bridge! Nicely in the center, spreading happiness to all directions. To the right, there’s happy people. To the left, smiling faces, to the other left, more great vibes. All coming together at our piece of wood! We love it!” They lie down, blush on their faces. “Could you take a picture? We want to remember this moment!”

Sure, no problem! Helping each other, that too is Tomorrowland. People are enjoying themselves on the bridge in the meantime, taking selfies with the Opera stage in the distance. A couple of prettily dressed hostesses are giving every passer-by a little piece of paper with a golden knot tied around it. Once unfolded, it contains a personal note, wishing you good luck or a beautiful day. But if you look closely at what you’re standing on, you don’t need that piece of paper. 210,000 People of Tomorrow have left their own notes for you to feel good about.

WHO WANTS TO GO TO

ATLANTA? This weekend, Hello bank! gives you the opportunity to win very exclusive tickets to TomorrowWorld in Atlanta, USA. You want to head over to the States in order to live this fairytale all over again? You probably do. So make sure to visit their stand at the food court behind the mainstage and unleash your balloon. The guys or girls (or guys and girls) whose estimate comes closest to the number of balloons to be released from the Hello bank! stand are rewarded with six Full Madness packages: an entire trip to TomorrowWorld where you’ll be taken care of in style. The flight’s booked, the hotel’s arranged and the combitickets are waiting for the lucky few! Anyone can join the game, as long as you live in Belgium, are at least 21 years old and registered at the Hello bank! stand on Tomorrowland. Worth a shot, isn’t it?

THEY DO!

Yes yes yes… is this not the best place on earth?

Gael, Fabrice, Ronald “Tomorrowland is amazing, but we are convinced TomorrowWorld is even more brilliant. Especially the American spirit intrigues us. It’s that family feeling, being part of a system in a positive way. To feel like a community, just like over here in Boom, but with an American flavour. That’s what we’re dying to experience! So fingers crossed and hope Lady Fortune favors us.”

Eline, Eline & Nele “Why we want to go to TomorrowWorld? Well, it’s more crazy and exotic than Tomorrowland, for us. We’ve never won something, so should there be a first time, please let it be this. We’ve been saving up for this weekend for three years, and can’t possibly afford going to TomorrowWorld ourselves. It’s a bit cheesy to say, but you only live once. Why not make the best of it?”

Last week was amazing and it was a real honour to be a part of it but this is the real deal. Yesterday proved that love rules over everything. So for those who never heard my poem this is for you. We are the people that must bring down the system No leaders and no politicians deserve the trust that we give them Sisters & brothers of Tomorrowland our love is not a crime You & me must change and now is the time So this weekend learn to make people smile Be LOVE or be nice because that’s dem wickedest style We are the children, the bricks in the wall And if we all stand together, how the mighty will fall Yesterday is history, Today is a gift Tomorrow is mystery so we must all work this shift. One Love Look out for one another, it’s Saturday and shit gets crazy! So if you have never been here before know that you are not alone, and we are family. Don’t be afraid to change who you are, because we all need to. Tolerance, understanding, love. Have a wonderful day, wherever you may choose to be today. Mainstage is always madness so make sure to come and say hi. Stretch

SATURDAY

JULY 26TH 2014

Bridges For Music DANCE to unite Bridges for Music, a South African non-profit, music-based organisation, have partnered up with Tomorrowland this year, providing the opportunity to take two South African artists to the festival. This weekend, DJ Lavish 189 from the Langa township dropped by the Lotto Dream Island stage. It was the very first time that Lavish played outside his home country, let alone at one of the largest dance festivals in Europe, so this was a massive gig for him. We spoke with Lavish about his first experience abroad and about how Bridges for Music uses the power of sound to unite people. What was it like for you to travel to Tomorrowland? “It was quite the experience, I’ll tell you. It was the very first flight of my life, man! I’ve never been on a plane so it was exciting. It was wow! The take-off was awesome, I found that exhilarating, the landing was a bit harsh and bumpy so I didn’t really like that so much (laughs). It took about 16 hours and I was on my own, so that was a bit scary for sure.” What was the first thing that went through your head when you arrived at the festival? “I was like: wow, this is really, really happening! I’ve never imagined something like this to happen in my life. I’ve been DJing for a while and I know I’m quite good at what I do, but this is just beyond me. And I was pretty nervous, oh yes. Especially because it involved flying over here, and I really didn’t know what was awaiting me. But it was a great experience, and I’m still enjoying every bit of it.” Where you able have a look around the festival before your set? “No, I actually got here only 20 minutes before my set so everything went in a hurry. But we will be here all weekend so I’ve still got plenty of time to make up for that. But when I walked up towards the Dream Island stage I was already amazed by how huge the stages are, and how detailed the decorations are being put up. And of course: how happy the people are, wow! You know, Tomorrowland is actually bigger than the township I am from.” How did you experience your set? “My set was quite intriguing, actually. It was the first time that I played for a bunch of people that are probably not really familiar with the dance culture I grew up with. It was really interesting to see whether I would be able to pull it off. But I do believe I managed to do so.”

11 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

What’s the difference between playing in South Africa and playing here at Tomorrowland? “There’s some major differences! Everything here is more EDM focused, like the real Europeanstyled hard EDM. But I think the audience did accept what I tried to do. I would describe my own sound as a kind of jazzy type of deep house. Homegrown electronic sounds of South Africa, basically.” Do you feel that there is a divide between the two cultures in South Africa? “Yes. Very much so. There’s a big divide between the black culture and the white culture. But thanks to Bridges for Music and certain DJs the two cultures are growing closer together. Through the sound I make I try to do the same thing myself. I still represent my township and the music that goes with it, but I am definitely trying to narrow the gap between the two cultures. South Africa is such a diverse nation – we call it the rainbow nation – that it is actually absurd to divide people even more through music. Music should unite. It’s all about peace and music.”

First stop: Pepe’s pasta! With Pepe Giacomazza of La Botte, Tomorrowland brought Italy to the festival. “It’s always a great challenge to bring quaity food to the festival. The pasta is freshly made and we’ve got quality truffles and a hint of basilica to top it all off,” Pepe tells us.

Chocolates

Aftert the pasta, we backtrack a bit to the Callebaut Belgian Chocolates stand for a supreme dessert. An amazingly fresh-tasting plate with chocolate mousse topped off with lemon water and a little crunch is offered. “People love to see us prepare the dish right in front of them,” chef Nils Hendrikse says.

02

Lombardia

For a gluten-free meal, we continue towards the Mainstage for Lombardia. Chef Chiara is chef Eric Taeymans’ daughter and explains us why their meals are so healthy. “We bake gluten-free bread and it’s all low on calories. The Magic Mushroom dish and the salads are recommended.” We second that!

03

Moochie Frozen Yoghurt

We only need to take one step to the left for a sweet cup of frozen yoghurt ice cream. “But actually, it’s not ice cream,” miss Moochie Greet Buytaert says, “it’s not even yoghurt ice cream. It’s really frozen yoghurt. It’s much healthier and lower on calories than an ice cream!”

Roasted chicken Delight yourself with another Belgian classic: the roasted chicken – or ‘kip aan ‘t spit’ if you will. It’s chef Kor Vermeylen’s second year here at Tomorrowland but he’s been roasting chickens for 22 years now. “It’s fun to see all these happy faces, although it gets up to 45 degrees in our cabin.”

Say hi to the chefs

Over the past few years, Tomorrowland has become known as one of the world’s best-fed festivals. You can, in fact, take a bit of a Michelin guide trip around the festival and delight yourself with the creations of some of the best chefs Belgium has to offer. Follow our lead in this culinary journey through the festival, and feast on the amazing dishes these chefs are preparing for you all weekend long!

08

Belgian Croquettes

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

In the food zone behind the Mainstage you will find the nice people of the Vuurtoren baking the best fresh Belgian Croquettes. Peggy Tielemans: “Our famous cheese croquettes and cheese ‘n ham croquettes are sold the most. Basically because people from abroad don’t really know what shrimp croquettes are (laughs)!”

Swa & Marieke There’s Belgian fries and then there’s Belgian fries by Swa & Marieke. They became a real institute in the art of frying over the years. Hailing from Frituur De Kwetterwei, it’s the couple’s very first time at the festival. “But we definitely want to come back!” Marieke says.

What time is it? Falafel ‘o clock! Next to the strawberry stand, Finjan restaurant offers the finest falafels in the country. “Nevertheless we get loads of people from abroad here because all we serve are vegetarian dishes,” says chef Sabine de Clercq. “It’s great fun here ‘cause all we see are bright smiles!”

Strawberries

Let’s take in some vitamins as well, shall we? “Last weekend we sold 2,250 portions of strawberries,” Koen Dockx explains. “All our strawberries are fresh and are local products. We top ‘em off with some whipped cream or chocolate and the hotter it gets, the more people start craving for their freshness.”

The Q-dance night owls

While you were sleeping in your tent to recharge for this second day of Tomorrowland, the Dim Mak stage was converted into the Q-dance stage. During the night, stage riggers added a towering face and the characteristic spikes to give the podium a real Q-dance twist. Building half a new stage overnight; that’s dedication to your cause if ever we’ve seen it. Then again, Q-dance are known for turning every hard dance party into a high quality total concept. With their area all sorted out, they’re set to provide you with the best of the harder styles in dance music!

SHE SAID YES!

We would like to congratulate Victor Arruda and his girlfriend. They were here to celebrate love, Tomorrowland’s anniversary and the fact that they’ve had a relationship for ten years now. Victor surprised his girl with a marriage proposal, and she said yes! See you for another double celebration in ten years, lovebirds!

Camping GRILLMEISTER

This year Lidl will be looking for the greatest master of the grill at the DreamVille campsite. How can you conquer the title of the one and only true Tomorrowland Grillmeister? Easy: just head over to the butcher shop, wrap one of the BBQ aprons around your neck, grab the grill tools, let the charcoal scorch and cook up the juiciest slice of meat you can. Post your picture on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook using the #Grillmeister hashtag and you might just become that one lucky griller to win an exclusive chopper flight over the grounds of Tomorrowland on Sunday!

To ask or not to ask, that is the question!

Tomorrowland is crowded with beautiful people, so you’ll probably find someone who makes your heart beat a bit faster. Once you’ve found this special someone, how do you find out if he or she’s been hit by Cupid’s arrows as well? Pay close attention! These instructions will guide you to a night full of romance.

x

The best way to see if you made a striking first impression as well, is to simply start a conversation with him or her! Find out where (s)he’s from, tell your best joke and try to make them laugh. Once you’ve established contact with your dream lover, try to take it a bit further. Put your seduction powers at work! Show your signature dance move or offer something to drink. Touch him or her lightly on the arms or lower back and see if they repay the kindness. If everything is still going smoothly after this, the time for romance has come! Whilst Tomorrowland is a place where anything goes, usually, do pay attention to the boundaries of your potential lover. There’s no shame in asking “Can I put my hand here?” In fact, it might even lead to some dirty talk, which will only improve the intensity of your foreplay! If you made it to this stage of your romantic quest, it’s probably wise to head back to your love palace at DreamVille. On your super romantic inflatable mattress, it’s still very much possible that your sexy soulmate-to-be has other expectations. Are they just not as quick to the draw as you are? Then try a nice night of cuddling. Who knows what might come out of those deep conversations that only happen in the darkest hours of the night… And remember that no is also an answer! INCREDIBLE SATURDAY

Focus on:

STAR WARZ This drum ’n bass concept was once founded by Mister M, known from Kozzmozz and One87. The first edition took place in 2001 and was already massive, but Star Warz kept on growing ever since. It’s no surprise they eventually got the opportunity to host their own area at Tomorrowland. Besides Tomorrowland’s 10th birthday, they will also celebrate the 20 year anniversary of record label Metalheadz. If you like it fast, you won’t regret a visit to stage 13, the big tent on top of the hill behind before the mainstage. Many sharp snares, rolling hihats and far-reaching basslines await!

Focus on:

Super You&Me Calling all crime fighters, shape shifters and teleporters! Wanna party like a superstar? Well, Laidback Luke’s Super You&Me parties are all about saving civilization from mediocrity through ‘younique’ merrymaking music around the globe. Now are you superhuman enough to take on the Super You&Me challenge? Have you got the ammunition? Can you take the suspense? If so, harness all your super powers, dress to impress, and join Luke on the adventure of a lifetime. Have a smile put on your face at Super You&Me. A world of strobe-lit silhouettes and mind-blowing beats awaits at area 1!

V Sessions vs. Doorn Records One of Tomorrowland’s all-time favourites, Yves V, has invited Sander van Doorn to show the crowd what his label is capable of. Together they constructed a line-up to be proud of. Apart from their own performances, Yves & Sander have invited Bingo Players, Tommy Trash and many more headliners including Don Diablo, Firebeatz and Dyro as well. Together they’re sure to transform the floating Garden of Madness into a wave machine. Even the flowers on the ceiling will dance along to the beats of these two legends and their staff. The Garden awaits your arrival at 11 on the map.

JULY 26TH 2014

A Wake up call by Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano For those who like to focus on the music deeply, this year, each day of the festival will begin with a Daybreak Session. One artist with three hours to fill at the mainstage: that’s the recipe for a musical start of the day. This Saturday, you’ll be welcomed by the dynamic duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano.

JULY 26TH 2014

It all started in a clothing store. Not the first place you’d think would bring forth such a successful act as Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. While working there, selling clothes and stuff, a mutual understanding of music brought them together. They took to making some tunes somewhere in 2006, and are now named as ‘the Dutch version of Swedish House Mafia’ by none other than Axwell himself. They’re residents in the world-renowned club Hakkasan (Las Vegas) and regularly pump out a smashing Essential Mix on

BBC Radio 1. Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are smooth. They’re gentlemen, but with a sexy twist. That twist led to the hosting of their own night at the famous Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, called ‘Sexy by Nature’. Their sound is funky, electro, erotic and latin, it sways hips and it raises hands. No matter where they’re at, the tension in the air gets deliciously dirty with their music. What better way to start your day than by getting funky for three hours long?

Hardwell

Mainstage 22:30 & Mainstage 00:30 b2b with Tiësto

If you haven’t heard of Hardwell this past year, you probably live under a rock somewhere. Or on the dark side of the moon. Because nobody could have missed all the fuzz around the newest #1 DJ of the world! After Armin and his mentor Tiësto, Hardwell was chosen by fans all around the globe as their most beloved artist in the

famous DJMag Top 100. Recently he also became the new face of Dance4Life, which is leading the battle against the terrible disease AIDS. Dance4Life has been around for ten years, a milestone celebrated with Hardwell playing in the Amsterdams Concertgebouw, a magnificent location normally reserved for classical music. Once

‘just’ Robbert van de Corput out of the Dutch city of Breda, Hardwell is now a leading figure in the world of electronic music. His complex drum ensembles, emotive chords and powerful synths have captivated the newest generation of ravers.

DVBBS

Blasterjaxx

Ferry Corsten

They are fresh! They are Canadian, with a hint of Dutch! DVBBS (which is pronounced ‘dubs’, by the way) is bringing the mayhem to you! Since Tsunami took the world by storm, the two brothers have taken off at lightning speed into stardom. Chris and Andre, who first started off playing punk and dub reggae, have the fullest support of Quintino, Tiësto, Sander van Doorn and many others. Don’t consider them one-hitwonders! After the success of Tsunami they hooked up with another new, young and popular producer: Martin Garrix. The result? Gold Skies, in which legend Sander van Doorn also took part. During their sets they’re all over the place, from trap to hardstyle to electro to house. After smashing Ultra and EDC, DVBBS finally arrive at the epic tale that is Tomorrowland. Prepare to be blasted upside down and inside out by them!

Thom and Idir, better known as the dynamic duo Blasterjaxx, are pushing the borders between electro-house, Latin and that delicious big room sound. With a shared passion for music they’ve taken the world of electronic music by storm since 2010. They enjoy support from artists like Sidney Samson, Gregor Salto and Vato Gonzalez. No surprise, since their shows as well as their productions are marked by an enormous energetic vibe. Every single tune they bring forth is laced with passion. The release of their Reborn EP back in 2012 marked a new chapter in the story of Blasterjaxx: it got them signed by Laidback Luke on his Mixmash Records label. Standing at the beginning of what’s quickly shaping up to be an epic career, one can only wonder what Blasterjaxx will give the world in the decades to come. If the past tells us anything, it’s that it’s going to big.

With Ferry you can’t go wrong. He’s more than trance. He’s everything, and a little bit more. With seven studio albums Ferry is one of a kind. What sets him apart more than anything is not only his diversity, but the way he effortlessly mixes emotions in his music. Ferry is always ahead of the curve, setting the bar for others to top. Tracks like Gouryella (ft. Tiësto) and his remix of William Orbit’s Barber’s Adiago for Strings became legendary club anthems over the years. But his latest production is probably one of the most beautiful in Ferry’s long, long career. He and his wife welcomed a newborn son called Seb into the Corsten family! Ferry, if you’re reading this, congratulations on behalf of everyone at Tomorrowland! We’ll be showing our love for you and your happy family with every move we know during your set on Saturday.

Tiësto

Mainstage 23:30 Tiësto is much more than just a DJ. He paved the way for the current superstars, as he created a global brand out of his name. He was nominated for a Grammy, his ‘Club Life’ radio show reaches millions worldwide, and he co-operates with the biggest companies and clubs there are, including Intel and Hakkasan Las Vegas. Musically speaking, he’s on fire as well. Whereas he gained his fame and glory by producing groundbreaking trance, nowadays he has shifted his focus onto every genre he deems worthy. That way his sound

has steadily transcended genres, something that can be heard on his latest album A Town Called Paradise. His releases come out on his very own label, Musical Freedom, which holds quite a few gold and platinum records. As Tiësto’s traveling from sold-out arena to sold-out arena, he is evolving in an idea rather than a man, spreading love and brilliant tunes everywhere.

Frontliner Q-dance 18:30

With his unique approach to hardstyle, Frontliner has made a name for himself as ‘The Melody Man’. This moniker may give it away a bit, but Frontliner is best known for his intense melodies combined with a devastating kick and that allimportant, non-producible factor; emotion. With Symbols (the Q-BASE anthem of 2012) and Weekend Warriors (Defqon.1 anthem 2013) as absolute highlights, he has built an impressive track record over the last years. All these

productions are released on his own label Keep It Up Music. Moving audiences nearly to tears time after time, he plays every large hardstyle festival there is. His tour around the world is currently being documented on film. The material that’s shot of him at the major festivals is turned into videos for his upcoming tracks under the name ‘The Summer of Frontliner’. But nothing beats the real thing – be sure to check him out at the Q-dance stage!

Sander van Doorn

V-Sessions vs. Doorn Records 22:45 Sander van Doorn is one of the most influential producers the world has ever seen. A musical and technical genius, born in the Dutch city of Eindhoven, he influenced entire generations with his music. That goes for his sets, as well as for his technical know-how in the studio. Always smiling, Sander is a true stronghold within electronic music. In 2014 he worked together with youngster Martin Garrix and DVBBS on the smasher Gold Skies. Another legendary track of his is Renegade, the anthem of the equally famous Trance Energy concept. It goes to show

Ben Klock

Kozzmozz 22:30 Hypnotizing. Ben Klock is hypnotizing. He mastered the skill of taking a dance floor beat by beat and moving it into a state of ecstasy in the infamous Berlin club Berghain, where he is a resident. Long nights full of bodies moving, eyes closed, feet moving, sweat dripping off the ceiling, that’s what Ben Klock does best. He’s a magician, rather than a DJ. With his imprint Klockwork he’s picking up like-minded artists to create a nostalgia-free powerhouse of techno.

Consistency, tension, a dynamical flow within his tracks, that’s his style. No climaxes, no deep drops, only a musical hypnosis. He mixes industrial influences effortlessly with natural sounds. Even though his slot at Tomorrowland this Saturday is not one of his famous marathon sets at Berghain, rest assured that Ben will give you a taste of what they feel like. Before you know it, your hour with him will have gone by.

Sander knows how to get the most out of every genre around. Such a name deserves more than just a DJ slot at Tomorrowland. Obviously, it suits him better to host an entire area. Doorn Records will be doing a co-op hosting with Yves’ V-Sessions all day long. Enough said. Get over there!

JULY 26TH 2014

2010

how Tomorrow came to last a decade When the domains of de Schorre, Boom, Belgium first came to life with a flurry of festival stages and dance devotees, the event’s moniker was oddly prophetic: Tomorrowland. The future held more than one tomorrow for the newly born land, and has until now graced us with ten editions – ten years – of the world’s most magical festival. How did Tomorrowland come to be, and whence comes its allure? This weekend, the final pages of each TML Today are dedicated to our origins. Every day, a different period of Tomorrowland’s history will be chronicled. Today, we consider the years 2010 and 2011.

2010: BUILDING CHARACTER

2010

A decade into the new millennium, Tomorrowland was going stronger than ever. Last year’s massive edition had laid claim to an authoritative position among dance music festivals worldwide, and 2010 would be the year to seal the deal. Online, both on old-fashioned forums and newly popular social media, Tomorrowland’s magical atmosphere was tipped as a great thing to see. Before long, all tickets – including 25,000 camping spots – were sold out again. In order to take the crowd to greater heights than last year, 2008’s giant sea turtle swum back to the grounds and settled near the day entrance, carrying a Ferris wheel on its back. Meanwhile, on the other side of the domain, an enormous rainbow came out over the friendly-faced sun which loomed above the audience. Due to the large scale of the event, there was room to realize a counterpoint to the massive stages as well. Tomorrowland had always been populated by a multitude of wondrous creatures, and the environmental decorations had been growing in detail from year to year. Now, the amount of dancers, fairies, gnomes and other small curiosities was such that they became unavoidable. Which was a good thing.

29 TOMORROWLAND TODAY 2014

DE SCHORRE BOOM BELGIUM

The magic of Tomorrowland, after all, hangs somewhere in the balance between grandeur and detail. Looking back at Mysteryland one more time, the 2010 edition shows that whereas its Dutch precursor is rich in small, surprising stages and performers, Tomorrowland is enchanted with a single theme throughout. From tiny signposts to towering podia, everything is infused with one single spirit, a magical lust for Tomorrow. Out of the distinctive twist of the first couple of years, Tomorrowland had definitely developed its own style compared to its northern parent. When, towards the weekend’s end, David Guetta took the mainstage, there was nothing holding the crowd back. No apprehension, no hesitation, only a sea of people who felt at home and safe enough to dance like no one was watching. It truly was a sight to behold, and much-discussed afterwards: what must have been ten thousand people waving and jumping in unison, from left to right, all about the floor. Closing DJ Chuckie followed suit with a sitdown on a scale never seen before, and thousands of people left the grounds drunk. Not (necessarily) with alcohol, but with a love for Tomorrow. 2011: DANCE REVOLUTION In 2011, it became clear that the surge in popularity of electronic music, which had partially fueled Tomorrowland’s 2010 success, was not going to subside anytime soon. Dubstep was more than a passing hype and Swedish House Mafia had scored more hits than just One. Dance music genres that had enjoyed consistent popularity in Europe for decades finally got the worldwide recognition they deserved. Clearly, it was time for the magic to multiply and Tomorrowland expanded into a threeday festival. The occasion meant further enlargement of the camping, called DreamVille since last year, and a bigger ‘n better Gathering pre-party. Guests were welcomed to their temporary home by the rainbow from last year’s main, now doubling as a massive entry gate. Through it, campers poured out into the festival grounds, where they were greeted by the Tree of Life. She had laid down her roots in the mainstage, her branches stretching across the width of the valley, strange, amphibious creatures crawling from her hidey-holes. In front of her: a diversity of people the festival had never before seen. Canada’s maple leaf, Australia’s Commonwealth blue ensign, and everything in between was waved wildly to and fro amidst the crowd.

In the meantime, the line-up of Tomorrowland had evolved in keeping with the development of dance lovers’ tastes. Beneath the Tree of Life, a mixture of electro and progressive house could be heard, with performers including Faithless, Steve Aoki, Wolfgang Gartner and 2 Many DJs. At the other thirteen podia, styles ranged from deephouse to schranz and beyond. Wherever one went – be it a little-known forest path or a packed dance floor – cheerful people could be found. If during the first five or so years of Tomorrow, the audience was sometimes unsure of how to respond to the festival’s grandeur, they certainly weren’t anymore. And it was the People of Tomorrow who now made the magic, of course, with their relentless relinquishment of everyday societal standards, their unconditional acceptance of the fantasy world they found themselves in, and their joint will to create a Tomorrow to never forget. It was as if a voice could be heard upon entering the festival saying, ‘we’re here to share, we’re here to create the incredible.’ Backed by so many eager supporters, the magic extended across the pond; at the Internatonal Dance Music Awards, among exclusively North American nominees, Tomorrowland conquered the prize for ‘Best Festival’.
