JULY 27TH 2018

ATTENTION!

Ravers & ReveLlers,

MIND THE SUN! Your arrival at Planaxis is marked by a spell of extremely hot weather. Please watch one another and take the following precautions – that way you’ll be able to enjoy Tomorrowland all weekend long. •W ear sunscreen properly: apply thickly and multiple times a day! • Hydrate well: keep on drinking water throughout the day. • Wear a hat or a cap and cover up bare skin, or use the parasols handed out at the festival. Staying in direct sunlight all day will cause heat stroke! • Take a breather! Sit down in the shade every now and then to preserve your strengths.

People of Tomorrow,

TODAY W E P O U R

I NTO PL A N A X IS! It is time, friends; time to leave yesterday’s high. Remember the Gathering globe suspended in the hands of Unity, remember the beaming faces of newfound friends all around you, and remember the sublime feeling of being exactly where you were meant to be. Remember all of this well, because by now, you will have parted with the Gathering in search of Planaxis. It is time to go down. Down, down, beneath the waves, ever deeper, until you hit rock bottom – or is that… a glass dome? A seashell? An array of lights spreading out before you? 1

It seems you have finally reached the coordinates, then. From this day onwards, Planaxis will be yours to explore. Be sure to swim through every nook and cranny – spread your fins, twirl around between the towering carapaces and shimmering shells hidden in the deep. Settle down and make yourself at home in the reefs. You will find many fellow seekers alongside you, craving as you are to take in the beauty of this watery world, longing to imbibe its energy and spirit. Your journey is at an end now, friends. Go forth, and revel in the oceans’ beauty.

The STORY OF PLANAXIS

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

B E LG I U M

THE STORY OF PLANAXIS No one knows exactly how, why, or when Planaxis was built. The identity of its Architect is long lost to history, its first inhabitants are no longer with us. One thing was preserved for all these years, however, and has surfaced with the call for the People of Tomorrow to unite: a diary, waterlogged and old, but supposedly belonging to none other than the visionary mind behind Planaxis. This is the second entry.

Who would have thought? What they say is true after all. The Golden Ratio – it’s perfect. I set out to build my underwater houses like a seashell – sturdy, elegant, impenetrable. But then I found that the shells themselves are shaped by the numerical harmony we call the Golden Ratio. In honour of the creature which best embodies the ensuing spiral shape, I decided to name the colony ‘Planaxis’.

am working on the selection of materials; I believe I am close to finding a suitable way to construct the enormous dome that is to cover the community’s gardens, which will allow us to be truly self-sufficient.

The moment of inhabitation is at hand, then. Finally, we will have our place beneath the waves, our base from which to protect the surrounding reef, the point whence we shall relay to all the peoples of the world our Inspiration for Planaxis’ greatest structure, message – its central gathering place, came from another elegant animal. In due time, it will show The oceans are our greatest wonder, and we itself. For now, with the basics complete, I must never squander them.

THE TIDE IS HIGH… IN THE SKY! The People of Tomorrow come from all over the world. Some of them have to cross so big a distance that the only viable option is to take to the skies in iron birds: air travel is the way to go for them. And so, 11,000 travelers are brought to the festival site by Brussels Airlines, some of whom will check in to a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the Partyflight to Tomorrowland. Buckle up and enjoy the ride! For Partyflight travelers, the celebration of Tomorrow starts at the airport gate, where a DJ is spinning, the drinks are cold and the vibe is very much alive. A friendly breakdance battle, waves of cheering, dancing besides as well as on top of furniture: it’s all part of the proceedings at Ibiza airport, where one of the Partyflights is about to take off. Crowds of all ages, shapes and sizes dance, sing and befriend each other. Four guys in white shirts hand out sharpie markers and let fellow party people write on their clothes. “Sometimes they're Instagram account names. Sometimes they are just scribbles. We don't care. It's all about connecting people,” explains festival adventurer Sergio. “I'm here with my friends from Bilbao to celebrate life. Tomorrow is a gift!” Every time more people arrive at the gate, the crowd bursts into screams and whistles. It is no secret that the People of Tomorrow are friends who just haven't met yet. Groups of people fall into each other's arms at the sight of Amare, the beautiful, one-of-a-kind Brussels Airlines vessel that will soon carry them to their destination. “I can't believe it!” screams one. “This is so awesome…” gasps another. Once airborne, world-renowned pastry chef Roger van Damme gets ready to serve his special Tomorrowland creations to the hungry. His take on the Belgian waffle, topped with vanilla cream as well as a chocolate imprint of Tomorrowland's own logo, is a welcome treat to take a short

break from the revelry. All the while DJ Lady S blasts her fine beats. The airplane windows are shut tight as a soft, gold and purple glow lights Amare’s interior. Glowsticks are lit and flashes of light emerge from the DJ booth. We have lift-off in all senses of the word: the plane goes wild. Remaining seated is next to impossible for the passionate, beautiful crowd on board. Brussels Airlines came prepared and brought extra crew to ensure the safety of our people – even when that means showing impatient dancers their places. But turbulence does not break their spirit: singing, whistling and banter continue as travelers decorate the plane with flags of their countries of origin. Once in a while, whether spontaneously or just on their way to the bathroom, someone starts dancing again, unable to resist the DJ's grooves. The Partyflight on Amare takes about two hours. It is an unforgettable trip and for many, it is the last leg of their Global Journey. Some of the People of Tomorrow traveled to no less than three different European cities in preparation for their homecoming at Tomorrowland – some of them for the second, third or fourth time. Touching down, it is time to prepare for their arrival at Planaxis, where their adventure continues. The People of Tomorrow are ready and eager to go home to their Holy Grounds.

5

THE PI LOT “It's formidable to be able to do something like this. Formidable,” explains Amare pilot Peter Treier once we touch down in Brussels. Peter's skills got the crowd from party island Ibiza all the way back to Belgium safely, so that all of them can immerse themselves into the world of Planaxis. “It's a beautiful thing to accommodate all these different nationalities, and that we can be the number one flight carrier to deliver all these people to the party capital of the world. I'm very proud of that. It's an incredible event – a first time for me, and the most amazing thing I've done in my 13 years of flying for Brussels Airlines.”

PACKING FOR PARADISE

In search of an unknown world, Global Journey travellers carried tents, sleeping bags and backpacks. From five different countries they’d departed by bus, train, or plane towards Planaxis – following the coordinates that led them towards the underwater city. But before the mesmerizing hosts guided us allto the gates of madness... Please, tell us, what’s in those big bags of yours, and how was the journey?

ALVARO (26) Mexico City, Mexico “I’ve had this rabbit hat for a while now. I bought it last winter on a super lame bachelor party in Austria. I thought it would be fun to take it with me on the bus journey to Tomorrowland. I won’t wear it much at the festival itself, I think. Way too hot!”

ANTONY (25), ANDREW (26) AND JOSE (28) Guadalajara, Mexico “We brought humongous sombreros all the way from Mexico. Especially for Tomorrowland, of course.” The enormous traditional hats aren’t even that comfortable, in the guys’ humble opinion, but these three friends have been hauling them around for a whole week. Andrew: “We’ve been in Europe for a week already. Our Mexican hats have even travelled through Russia!”

CONNER (24) Washington DC, United States “I have been traveling for 25 hours. It was chaos: my flight was cancelled because of a storm. To catch my bus from Amsterdam to Brussels on time, I had to travel to another airport and book a new flight. But, hey, nothing could stop me, because coming to Tomorrowland is my biggest dream. I still can’t believe I’ll be there soon. What I brought from home? A flag!”

Wanted: experienced drinkers

Strolling, hanging or dancing around the Chill Out area and in desperate need of a cocktail? Look no further, as the cocktail professionals are here. The cocktails they serve are similar to your regular classics, but remixed in a notso-regular way. For example, try their gin tonic with a topping of cucumber and cranberry, red amaranth or fresh pineapple – or their DreamVille cocktail, made of tequila olmeca, Lillet, lemon, basil, and cucumber. “To us, it’s all about being different and creating a relaxed vibe,” Ben (25) says. “We have an amazing team that makes amazing cocktails.” As Ben introduces his co-workers David, Yoni, Cato, and Anthony, the girls start laughing. “If you come to us, you don’t only experience the drink, you drink the experience.”

LOOKING FABULOUS Surrounded by hypnotic mirrors, millions of colours and beautiful faces, one of M.A.C.’s best artists, Connie Man, is working her magic. Especially for Tomorrowland, she has created three festival-proof looks. While applying one of her masterpieces, she elaborates on how this look came to life and what inspired her to design it. “Glitters are hot right now, so I wanted to create something that could be seen from miles away.” Connie didn’t just use ordinary glitters; if you take a closer look, you will see that they’re shaped like stars. “You can make it stand out as much as you like. This look is easily translated to everyday life if you take it easy on the glitters. The freedom of festival make-up is what makes it fun. It doesn’t have to be perfectly symmetrical. Just play with it!” Connie has some make-up tips to share, too. “Most people look at how they can hide things, rather than focussing on what they can accentuate. Make-up is an accessory – use it as such!” Would you like to accessorize your outfit with one of the custom-made M.A.C. looks? You can find their salon at the Marketplace.

Friendship refreshes the soul The People of Tomorrow are all about unity. This freshly formed group of friends surely shares a will to become as one. And what says ‘unity’ more than a magical bracelet? Tomorrowland has designed a number of exclusive friendship bracelets together with Belgian jewelry brand Atelier Clash, and they are sold solely on Tomorrowland. Every bracelet colour has its own gemstone, which makes it easy to send a personal message to someone special. Curious to see how the magic happens? Let’s just say it can be best explained as ‘strangers on Thursday become family on Sunday’.

Time for a hair party! Of course, you had your festival outfit ready months ago. But what about your hairdo? Still looking for that effortless ‘I woke-up-this-fabulous’ look? Wella’s Braided Buns are your way to go!

Step one: Use a wide-barreled curling iron to create a soft wave and texture. Step two: Part your hair at the top of your head and take two small, upper sections on either side. Step three: Make a braid on each side, using new strings of hair with every section you braid. Secure each braid at the back of your head with a micro band. Step four: Take both end sections of the braids and turn and twist them into a tousled bun, securing it at the back of your head. Make your bun as thick or thin as you want. You must have noticed them already: the official Step five: Use the tips of your fingers to give your bun a messier texture. Tomorrowland flags flying high all about the festival. Buy one at one of the TML by Tomorrowland boutiques, Make sure to bring or borrow an extra mirror to check out the fabulous result from behind. Disappointed about the reflection? and all proceeds are donated to the Love Tomorrow Numbed every finger and both of your arms, but still created something that wasn’t worth the work at all? Wella’s got you covered! Foundation. They use the money for charitable projects Come and consult the hair experts at Wella’s shop on the Marketplace at DreamVille to get those insider’s tips and tricks, as well such as their Music & Arts School in Nepal. as the products you need to create the hairdo of your Tomorrowland dreams!

DREAMVILLE A TROPICAL STATE OF MIND

Welcome home! The currents have led your hearts to tropical DreamVille, where you can finally inhale the sweet sea breeze of Planaxis. Many of you have crossed oceans, survived heavy storms and conquered gigantic waves during your quest to find the underwater city. Now that you’ve found it, you can let your worries drift away, make yourself at home and become the driving force of Planaxis. As the breeze caresses your skin, the sun greets you with a smile so bright it’s nearly impossible not to run for the shade or to find other ways to cool down at the campsite. What are the best tips and most brilliant ways to cope with the heat? We’ve collected some of your best ideas, so dive right in!

Freke (26) & Jolien (27) from Belgium have found the perfect way to cool down while setting up their tent. “They’re handing out free ice cream here! But we probably shouldn’t have said that, now everybody knows…”

9

Roxanne (19) from Luxemburg has it all figured out. While she sits in her chair, Alex (20) blows cold air towards her. Roxanne: “It’s hot at DreamVille, but still a lot of fun! The tents are finally up and we’ll bring our fan with us all weekend to stay cool.”

“We have 4 buckets and we’ve made the trip to the taps a couple of times already. But oh boy, will it be worth it!” Max (22) from Germany told us that a pool party is the best way to deal with these tropical vibes. Can we get an invite, guys?

2018

Sandra (20) has just returned from her trip to Spain, where she went swimming and tanning. “It’s actually hotter here in Planaxis than it was during my holiday.” She and her friend Cynthia (27) use a hand fan to cope with the heat. “You can take it with you wherever you go!”

DON’T SWEAT, SPARKLE Dear weather, please stop showing off. We know you’re hot! Angelique, instructor at the Matrix Recovery Area, explains that even with these high temperatures, there are always ways to keep working on your own hot body. “Just do it at your own tempo. Begin by focussing on your mindset via meditation to cope with the heat.” With these moves, you can really give your body and mind a boost. 1. Begin with the Child pose: place your knees on the mat, put your forehead on the ground and point your fingers forward while you press your hands to the ground. 2. Get in a plank position and press your arms up for the Cobra. Keep your core tight and breathe in while you look to the sky. 3. Start to walk towards your hands to get to the Downward Facing Dog position. Lift your hips to the ceiling (or up to the sky), keep your hands apart at shoulders’ width and draw your belly in towards your spine. 10

“I was here last year, but never experienced these tropical temperatures.” Pieter-Jan (25) from Belgium has multiple tips for us in store: “You should definitely try a Fresh & Black tent, drink a lot of water, use your fan, and wear something on your head.” Why not use the last edition of TML Today? They make great hats. Try for yourself and send your best photo to today@tomorrowland.com!

“This is the first time we’ve tried it, so time will tell if our tent stays nice and cool!” Philip (22) and Patrick (22) put foil over their tent to keep the sun out. Let’s hope it helps!

“After we’re all done with our tents, we will set up our pool!” Sophie (25) goes on: “We’re also making sure we wear enough sunscreen so that we won’t get a sunburn on the first day.” That would surely ruin the party…

B E LG I U M

The adapt-or-die approach is what works best for Willie (25) from South Africa. “Shove it to the back of your mind, stay hydrated and your body will be able to cope with it subconsciously. You can’t let this heat stop you from having fun!”

For Ewoud (18) it’s his first time at Tomorrowland. “We’re here to help people cool down!” Elisas (21) has visited DreamVille before: “Last year I also brought my water gun, but this year people are finally happy to get shot.” They laugh and start blasting water towards overheated bystanders.

“Heat? What heat? We’re here for the music and the ambiance!” Luoni (22), Carla (20) and Maulyse (21) won’t let the weather get in the way of the best weekend of their lives. Luoni: “Our plan is to cool off here at the showers right before we go, so we can go to the party all fresh.” Girls just wanna have sun!

11

“I sure hope it won’t break!” David (28) yells to his friends Robin (34) and Dominic (28). We are happy to inform you that the boys made it back to their tents with an intact pool. Dominic: “It’s the best way to relax a bit and cool off, so it was worth the trouble.”

LOVE TOMORROW treasure mother nature Today, Love Tomorrow dives into the Story of Planaxis together with the People of Tomorrow. Love and passion for each other and for all of Mother Nature’s treasures are key in this new, underwater realm. Love Tomorrow provides the People of Tomorrow with the necessary facilities to sort waste correctly and is a way for everyone to work towards Planaxis’ greatest ideal: a better Tomorrow. Before going through the festival gates, make sure to check out the cool things that are happening at DreamVille. Get inspired by the Recycle Clubhouse with their massive 3D printer!

S O RT T H I N G S R I G H T W I T H T H E C A LY X Today, Love Tomorrow reveals a beautiful creation at the festival site: the Calyx. These were created specifically for the People of Tomorrow, to help them respect Mother Nature’s treasures. The bins are made for sorting your waste in a fun and easy way. After you’ve finished your food and drinks, the food packaging, cutlery, bottles, cups and cans get recycled if you sort them right. The green Compost bins are for food waste and all food ware. The red bins are for all plastic drink cups. These cups are 100% recyclable and will be used as 3D-printing material at the Recycle Clubhouse.

R EC YC L E C LU B H O U S E The Recycle Clubhouse is located in the vibrant city of DreamVille, next to the Marketplace. It is a place for the People of Tomorrow to come together to share experiences, unite, connect, and learn from each other. And there is more: inside the Clubhouse, a massive 3D printer makes furniture (!) out of plastic bottles and cups. Come and have a look at this unbelievable creature… To become a member of the Recycle Clubhouse, you can recycle your PMD waste and Tomorrowland cups. In return for a full bag of PMD or 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) of Tomorrowland cups, you will be gifted with a 3D-printed icon of the Recycle Club to wear as a bracelet. By handing in more PMD or cups, you can collect a full bracelet with all the sorting symbols of the Recycle Club. Once you have collected them all, you become a prime member, and you get a small metal Tomorrowland icon!

C I RC U L A R C A M P I N G : C A M P 2 C A M P Are you familiar with the game-changing idea behind CAMP2CAMP? The project is not only about collecting camping gear that is left behind. It also changes the way camping is organized at DreamVille. For the first time ever, the People of Tomorrow got the chance to rent CAMP2CAMP packages with all camping gear included. The packages were sold out very quickly: a sign that DreamVille guests understand the major benefits CAMP2CAMP has. Carrying heavy luggage all the way to Tomorrowland is no longer necessary, the packages are inexpensive, and the environmental benefits are huge. By re-using collected and cleaned camping gear from last year, you are making a positive impact on the environment. When the gear gets returned to the rental desk after the festival it will be cleaned and prepared for re-use again, so the cycle can be repeated. 13

BEAT THE HEAT! With extraordinarily high temperatures and the sun reaching down even into the deepest corners of Planaxis, it’s essential that you protect yourself against excessive heat. Of course, your swimming pool at DreamVille and ample ice cream are a good start, but there are some more serious measure that are simply a must in this weather. Besides, Tomorrowland has a few extra measures in place to help you cool your head and keep your body going. Here’s what to do: 1. Drink enough water. Do not drink alcoholic beverages only, and make sure you stay hydrated! 2 Stay out of the sun. Free parasols will be handed out and extra shade and cooling are provided at DreamVille and in front of the stages. If you’ve spent a while dancing in the heat, sit down in the shade for a bit to rest. 3 Use sunscreen! This is essential even for your DreamVille mornings. Apply liberally and refresh a number of times throughout the day. 4 Wear a cap or a hat and protect your face. If you haven't brought anything, the TML by Tomorrowland boutiques have you covered! 5 Listen to your body. If you feel yourself overheating, look for shade and grab some water and something to eat.

TREAT YOUR BODY RIGHT

Strolling around the campsite or the festival area multiple days in a row will have your belly rumbling. To make sure you won’t be sorry for what you said when you were hungry, try not to get hungry at all! Easy? Sort of. It’s perfectly understandable that you prioritize making new friends, flirting with that cute barista and taking selfies over eating well. So here’s the solution: Carréfour is breaking ground at Tomorrowland, providing a pop-up supermarket at the Marketplace in Dreamville. This is the place where you will find a wide range of fruits & vegetables, healthy salads, tapas, and a variety of dips. Everything can be found pre-cut, so you won’t lose any of your precious time. The main purpose? “Making sure every visitor has access to healthy foods throughout the festival,” Bart Peelmans, Carréfour’s Director Merchant Services, says. “We are also introducing our latest project on Dreamville, called Shipto.” Shipto is an online marketplace, hosted by Carréfour, where orders are delivered to your tent within 30 minutes after ordering. And if you’re in need of an extensive vitamin boost, but too tired to choose, Easy Packs are available for every moment of the day, offering a variety of boxed goods from Breakfast to Detox.

Capture the Moment You’ll probably be taking a selfie or two this weekend – but what about one that captures most of the Holy Grounds along with yourself? In front of the Freedom Stage, by Budweiser, you will find a stand where you can capture your journey for Planaxis in a panoramic selfie. As you stand on the podium, the camera will zoom out far and wide, catching the beauty of the stage, the surrounding scenery, and the happiness on your face. You’ll be emailed the photo after the festival, so that you’re able to keep this memory and share it with your friends. Upload it with #BUDxTOMORROWLAND to join up with your fellow selfie seekers online!

We ar what sets you r so ul o n fi r e You could call it a constant struggle; looking your absolute best on the best weekend of the year. Since everybody is done with the big festival outfit clichés, this common struggle is getting even bigger. What you wear tells a story, it says who you are and expresses your vibe. GETTING READY FOR TOMORROW AT

THE GATHERING

TOMORROWL AND TODAY

2018

How many hands did you shake yesterday, and how many new friends did you make? After a day like yesterday, surely, these can’t be small figures. Under a globe clasped in the hands of Unity you gathered, getting ready to enter the gates of Planaxis in style. Though the sun’s rays were beating down like hammers, nothing could stop the Gathering from becoming the pre-party of a lifetime. A little splash of rain, an enthusiastic crowd unable to contain their excitement, and a massive display of flags and unity were the ingredients that set the stage for talents young and old – from Henri PFR to Bonzai All Stars – to excel. To the People of Tomorrow’s delight, the night was closed out with a triple surprise act consisting of Netsky, Lost Frequencies, and Armin van Buuren. Mission accomplished: the intrepid band of explorers looking for Planaxis had been forged into one single unity.

Nicole and Robbie from Ireland have been together for 5 years. “We are getting married”, Nicole laughs. Robbie responds: “No, she’s just joking, but what I am going to do is propose to her next year!”

What better way to break the ice, then, than with the mirror image of that beautiful symbol of harmony depicted in the stage? Tag along with a journey around the world in twelve stories, as some of the early DeamVille arrivals pass along the magic of the Gathering!

Nicole carries the globe over to the first person she sees. “And he’s Irish,” she says as she meets Shane, wearing the nation’s flag. “Yes indeed, I am from Ireland. Didn’t really travel far across the globe now, did I?”

B-EAT

DANCE & DINE

UP CLOSE WITH YOUR FAVOuRITE ARTIST Out of all the culinary treats on offer at Tomorrowland, B-EAT by Las Vegas might just be the most legendary. This year, the Las Vegas chefs will team up with Dutch and Belgian colleagues to transform this fine dining place into a unique piece of heaven once again. Alongside them sails a mighty selection of DJs, with the likes of Yves V, Sander van Doorn, and Florian Picasso showing up to spice up the bites with beats. Lasting one hour, visitors can experience a private and up-close DJ session with a menu consisting out of four appetizers and a special B-EAT cocktail. This is where the essence of Tomorrowland comes to existence, as food and music flow into one another. Don’t miss out!

Get your engine running on the very best of fuels Mother Nature has to offer.

If there is one thing Tomorrowland has taken pride in over the last years, it’s in its constantly improving and varying range of top-class food, offered to you by the fine fleur of Michelin-star-spangled chefs from all around the world. With the key words being ‘fresh’ and ‘quality’, the festival went on the lookout for those wizards of the kitchen that are able to incorporate the world of Tomorrow into their dishes – but also commit themselves to working with high-end ingredients in a respectful manner. At the same time, they have to be able to cook hundreds, sometimes thousands of couverts of a single dish. Thinking about

20

and loving Tomorrow is all about improving yourself as a person, and while there’s plenty of music and magic about to strengthen your inner self as well as your mental wellbeing, these chefs are the ones that get your engine running on the very best of fuels Mother Nature has to offer. The one restaurant on the festival grounds that arguably captures the Tomorrowland vibe at its very best is B-EAT. On the food court at the back of the Mainstage, opposite the Atmosphere stage, you will find this massive restaurant at the top floor of an enormous tent. Beats are pounding as fast as you can work your knives and forks, and this is the one place where the two great loves of the festival come together: music and food, beats and eats. The concept is as simple as it is Earth-shattering: four times a day, one of Tomorrowland’s top DJs gives the decks a spin while a world-renowned chef prepares the food – à la minute, for a select audience of those lucky enough to have made a reservation in time. The hosts of this restaurant are flown in from Las Vegas, but they have invited their best Belgian and Dutch friends for the occasion’; together, they provide an oase of magical madness and a feast for the tongue deep inside the festival.

B-EAT. When on tour, the promoters tend to take me out to the finest restaurants in the world. To me it’s very important to eat a good, healthy dinner as often as you can. It’s a premise that doesn’t always work out on tour, but I try to keep all that in balance by putting myself on a diet of vegetables and water when I’m at home (laughs).” Ever since he moved to Amsterdam, a city with many fantastic dining possibilities, Sander van Doorn’s inner foodie has come out as well. “But in the end, there’s nothing that will make me happier than a good old juicy steak with some Belgian fries!” Well, Sander, if you’re lucky, one of the chefs might just shove a culinary reinterpretation of that classic right under your nose today.

As the stove gets turned up to eleven, the knives get sharpened and the chefs put the final touches upon their pieces of fine edible art, the DJs take the stand to mix up the Madness in the dishes, as if it were the ultimate secret ingredient. One of the musicians that has been part of the B-EAT experience from the very beginning is Belgian DJ and Tomorrowland regular Yves V: “I have been doing this from the first time, actually. Looking at what it grew out to become, I’m amazed. Back then it was merely a prelude, a rehearsal of what it is today. It was bonkers nevertheless. Even though the tent was maybe a third of what it looks like now, the crowd went absolutely mental. Champagne glasses and plates flew through the air as if it were some kind of food tornado. Insane! The immense venue built for this year is in a different league. It can’t even be compared, which makes it a very peculiar feeling to play here. It’s like a festival inside the festival.” Yves V will be followed up by his Dutch colleague Sander van Doorn, who makes his debut today but has been warned about B-EAT nevertheless: “I have played in a food-

related environment before,” he says, referring to Club Mambo at Ibiza, “but even though everybody quickly got off their seats over there as well, I’m extra excited to get behind the decks at B-EAT. Some DJ friends of mine warned me that this can be quite the experience. Some of them even proclaimed this to be their best set at Tomorrowland yet!” Food and music, it’s a match made in heaven. According to Sander, the reason why is plain and simple: “When you’re up partying all day, you’d better get some good food in your stomach to be able to keep on going. And when it’s extremely tasty, as well as healthy, then there’s nothing better in the world, is there? I’m absolutely looking forward to scooching in and having a little bite myself during my set, I wouldn’t want to miss out on that!” Yves V plans on going for the full experience as well: “I mean, obviously you’ll have your hands full while playing, but I will definitely try to get a taste of the menu. I’ve always been a bit of a foodie, so I truly enjoy concepts like

You thought hardcore music to be a dark and grim affair? No longer! Pussy Lounge is as much about silly performances as it is about the most fun DJ sets celebrating the wide range of sounds of the harder, bouncier styles. You’ll perhaps enter the Pussy Lounge apprehensively, but you’ll come out a happier and more zen person – who would’ve thought? Oh, and despite the name, both female and male ravers are welcome at the Pussy Lounge; it’s a unisex party! This year’s line-up is brilliant as always and includes the likes of Paul Elstak, The Viper, Ruthless, The Darkraver and Korsakoff… Oh boy!

Trance is in a continuous state of evolution and – what’s a in a name? – Armin van Buuren’s very own A State of Trance stage very much reflects the vibe of the current scene. So at this year’s edition you’ll find German duo Cosmic Gate, relative newcomer Andrew Rayel from Moldova, and, of course, Mr. Van Buuren himself. The boldest part of the programme this year are Israeli psytrance dons Matan Kadosh and Aviram Saharai, a.k.a. Vini Vici, whose psychedelic sounds were – until recently – among the best kept secrets of the beaches of Goa and the parties of the die-hard psytrance scene.

This spectacularly curated stage, presented by Yves van Geertsom alias Tomorrowland hotshot Yves V, would have been a treat at any festival – but it is all the better, of course, that this happy dream should come true here. There’s top-notch Belgian king of the charts Regi, talented David Guetta protegé Brian Cross, and Timmy Trumpet, the Australian big room house DJ who’s been livening up his performances with… a real trumpet! Last but certainly not least, there wouldn’t be a V-Sessions stage without Yves V himself. He’s known to mix it all up: big room pumpers, trance anthems, urban crossover cuts, you name it!

MAINSTAGE 12h00 - 14h50

PAUL KALK BREN NER

LIVE

Paul Kalkbrenner is a pretty special case as far as techno artists go. He doesn’t DJ, but always performs live; deems post-1993 techno (other than his own, of course) not really worth listening to; starred in 2008’s spectacular clubbing-themed feature film Berlin Calling; rediscovered and identified his favourite tracks from his teenage years back on YouTube and – hold on tight – once performed on Tomorrowland’s Mainstage while nobody was there on a breezy day in April... 2018 sees colourful Kalkbrenner play two sets in Boom: a dense, one-hour-long performance during the first weekend and a generous marathon session during the second. There are many artists who favour performing live over DJ’ing, of course, but Kalkbrenner hasn’t played other people’s tunes properly for two decades now. Surprisingly, the roots of his way of performing lie in his own self-criticism. “It had mostly to do with me realizing, when I was very young, that I was technically always a very good DJ, but lacked a certain skill; I was incapable of giving the record enough time to run. I was just too impatient. And then I realised that on stage as well as in the studio, I could shift all the channels together and do a live show.” In a way, it seems funny that DJ’ing still prevails over live performance in the rave scene, as music marketeers would probably tell you it’s smarter to focus on your own work. “As a DJ you can’t really do that,” argues Paul, “because you’d be seen as a real ego tripper, just playing your own songs. No one does that. But when you have ‘live’ in brackets behind your name, people obviously expect that focus on your own work. People say you need a strong mind to do this, that it’s crazy to just do your own things, but I’ve been doing it since the very beginning, when I was twenty years old. It just comes naturally now.” By not taking any DJ bookings, Paul feels he’s able to fully concentrate on what is most important for him as an artist: his own production work. “One of the biggest advantages of not DJ’ing is that I don’t have to keep up to date with the latest music. If you start talking to me about the ten or so hottest techno labels right now, I probably wouldn’t have heard of them.”

With a very dedicated love for house and techno from the period 1989-1993, Paul probably couldn’t be a modern-day DJ playing lots of current stuff anyway. “Even tracks from 1994 or 1995 are missing something. I’m a big fan of early rave from the Netherlands and Belgium that came out at a time when the scene in Germany was still dormant.” In 2016, Paul was about to turn forty. He decided to look back at the time when he first started listening to electronic music via East Berlin’s DT64 radio station, which is still going today under the name Radio Fritz. “Back then I never knew the titles, I didn’t have the money to buy the records, and I didn’t even know where to get them. Now, twenty-five years later, after spending hours on YouTube, I finally got to know a lot of those names.” It is this love for the songs created just after the Berlin Wall fell that inspired Paul to start working on his Back to the Future series, a project that resembles DJ’ing more than anything else in his recent career. A hybrid between a mix and a series of Kalkbrenner edits, it is a project that felt very liberating on stage. “I turned forty last year and for men… it’s not cool, you know, to lose your hair and everything. Last year, with Back to the Future, I went into the time machine playing all those tracks and it almost made me forget I turned forty.” Back to the Future happened in 2016 and 2017, but this year held another surprise for Paul’s fans as well as for himself. Tomorrowland asked Kalkbrenner to work on one of the strangest projects he’s ever been involved with. “For 100 Days Until Tomorrowland 2018, they asked me to perform an hour-long set in front of a completely empty field. When I arrived there were only a handful of people, all involved with the production. ‘Where is the Mainstage’, I thought – I didn’t even realise they take it down every year! And then you start doing it, and it’s surreal, there’s nobody you can nod your head to or wave to. The important thing is to stay concentrated, which is kind of hard without anyone there – there’s just the one million people streaming.” This July, when the cold and breezy weather is just a distant memory, the vibes, smiles and countless dancers are back. What can they expect? “For the long set during the second weekend, I’ve not yet decided what to do, so that will be a surprise.” Come find out what that surprise sounds like for yourself at Paul's Daybreak Session! 26

LIVE ORGAN OF HARMONY 00h00 - 01h00

UNDER WORLD

The history of Underworld is nothing short of incredible. It was with their groundbreaking 1993 album ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’ that they brought techno to a rock audience for the very first time – and we’re talking twenty-five years ago! If that seems impressive already, remember that Underworld actually had a long history of music-making behind them – they’d been recording gritty guitar music since 1979. 2018 sees them return to their roots with a series of songs with rock animal Iggy Pop. It is also the year of their very first Tomorrowland experience. It was in the early nineties that Europe’s youth first encountered elements of rave culture. To many people, the most remarkable thing about this new style of music was the fact that at the core of it was a four-to-the-floor rhythm, created with ‘computers’, and without the assistance of what were then seen as ‘real’ instruments. Electronics-based pop music had surfaced before in the eighties, particularly in the new wave scene, but it had never exploded as violently as it did in the case of rave music. So when the alternative rock audiences first saw club DJs arrive at their festivals, it was rather hard to make sense of them. What the festival scene needed was some gentle education. And so it happened that Underworld, a group with a rock background themselves, were the perfect crew to introduce people to what was the most exciting sub-genre of rave music at the time: techno. The abstractness of Detroit’s Derrick May was still a step too far and so Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson (who has now left the group) added vocals into their trance-heavy techno sound. Lyrics such as ‘Skyscraper, I Love You’ and ‘Shouting lager, lager, mega, mega white thing’, appealed to the openminded, headbanging and pogo-dancing inhabitants of the muddy festival fields. Techno, once a black dance movement in Detroit, had found its way to a new, white, European audience – never ever to leave their hearts, minds and souls again. So with their first show at Tomorrowland coming up today,

27

are Underworld opening up a world of music to a whole new crowd again? Are they introducing fans of EDM and big room house to their dream world of vocal techno? “Back then, the scene, though global, was much smaller,” says the band’s lead singer Karl Hyde. “Dance music is even more ‘everywhere’ these days than the ‘everywhere’ we thought it was ten years ago, and that can only be a good thing for all of us who love dance music. It’s always great to jam with new audiences.” Even if festivals always were massive gatherings of happy people, celebrating the joy of discovering new music and seeing old heroes, Hyde sees notable differences between now and then: “It was less grand, looser, the toilets were disgusting… and dance events were happening in places that probably wouldn’t be allowed now for health and safety reasons!” Last year, an unexpected milestone event took place in the career of the nearly forty-year-old band: they received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. “It happened to us last year after we released ‘Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future’ and we were like ‘Wow, that was unexpected!’” The critical acclaim certainly didn’t cause the two current Underworld members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith to take a break, as new work with Stooges frontman Iggy Pop is on its way. “We’re just completing the release of the ‘Tea Time Dub Encounters’ EP, the collaboration we did with him, and after that Rick and I are preparing what will be the next exciting and unexpected series of events to escape from the Underworld vault. We’ve been recording a lot on tour all over the world, and now it’s time to start releasing that material.” So, in concrete terms, what does a live performance by two dance music veterans entail? Are Karl and Rick’s energy levels still sufficient? “Well, that depends on what time of night we get on stage,” Karl says with a big grin. “I will say though: whatever my body is telling me as I crawl onto the stage, when Rick drops the kick drum, the adrenaline takes over and I have all the energy I could ever need!”

COELY FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY LIVE STAGE (ORGAN OF HARMONY) | 18h15 - 19h15

She’s opened up for Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Nas, and J-Cole, but now she’s running a show of her own. Antwerp-born Coely has become the rising star of Belgian hip-hop over the years, and now she’s ready to take over Tomorrowland from the festival’s brandnew Live stage. Going from modern beats to heartfelt soulful productions, her music is hiphop 2.0, designed to move people’s minds and hips. Looking forward to her show at the Organ of Harmony, she gives us an insight into her state of mind. Coely is just as excited as the rest of us to start this new chapter in Tomorrowland history. Tomorrowland isn’t your usual kind of gig. How do you feel about playing here? “Oh man, I am so excited for today’s show. Ever since I learned that I would get to perform at Tomorrowland I knew that it just had to be spot on. We have to hit the bullseye.” Never mind the nerves – is the fairytale atmosphere of the festival something that inspires you? “I do feel like a little princess here (laughs). I mean, the whole vibe you get here is beyond amazing. It’s like you’re walking around in one huge circus tent. It does stimulate your phantasy. There’s people dressed up as all sorts of creatures, you see unicorns all around, people can really let themselves go this weekend. If there’s one place on this Earth where you can be yourself, it’s Tomorrowland. There’s no escaping that feeling of freedom here, and we

should let the uniqueness of it sink in. The ‘Madness’ tagline shouldn’t be taken for granted. You better believe it: this is madness. This is little red riding hood and Alice in Wonderland mixed up into one big fat crazy world of its own.” And what about the music? Is Tomorrowland your jam? “It depends, from song to song. Musically speaking, I’m pretty much open to anything, so it comes down to whether I feel the beat or not. The beat is always key. If you can vibe and dance to it - sign me up!” Your sound is very much your own though – even amidst a huge surge in hip-hip’s popularity. “Damn right. I’ll keep doing my thing regardless of everyone else. I know what I’m good at, but I’ll also

“It’s all about feeling that damn beat!” keep trying out new stuff and looking for new directions. I have the freedom to do something different within my own world. Take my song ‘Can’t Get Away’ with Polar Youth, for instance. It’s fair to say that that song is outside of my main sound.” How do you come to decide what a song will be about? “Again: it’s all about feeling the beat. When I feel the beat, 29

I start singing immediately. It may be just phonetically or without using any words at first, but that’s where it all starts. When I feel the beat I lay my rhymes upon it. The beat’s born before the lyrics are.” Does fitting words onto the beat come before telling a story in your songs? “You can’t have one without the other, man. You’ll start writing your words to the beat, but then it becomes a process where both the subject you’re writing about as well as the beat can change along the way. The embryonic stage of a song often gets crafted into something completely different. ‘Celebrate’ sounded way different than what it eventually came to be. It was slower and harder, heavier, and it took a while for it to take the shape it has today.” Would you rather be in the studio or on stage? “Being in the studio isn’t always a walk in the park, it’s not always as fun as some might think it is. It’s a hard day’s work. You’re constantly going through new sounds, new samples, new beats, trying to find perfection. You’re doing everything over and over again until you get it right. But being on stage is something else, I can tell you. That’s my stage, I’m the boss right there. It’s like being the chef at a restaurant: you want nothing more than to have all your guests go home with a full stomach after an amazing night. I have to give those people something that they will remember, something they can take home with them and can hang on to forever. I love to perform, because it’s an experience you share with everybody. There’s no switch to be flipped, no act to be put up, when I walk onto the stage the raw energy just flows automatically. Just: bang!”

Alison Wonderland Netsky & Friends (Rose Garden) 21h30 – 22h30 Who says fairytale characters behind the decks can't kick some serious ass? We don't! Alison Wonderland is the alias of Australian 30-something Alexandra Sholler, proudly ranking #89 in DJ Mag's DJ Top 100 in 2017. She started out remixing songs such as Ladyhawke's 'Blue Eyes' in 2012, for which effort she received critical acclaim. Alison then released her debut single in 2013 and her debut album, 'Run', in 2015. It was rated Gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Her powerful vocals, along with her mix of EDM, electropop and hip-hop, provide for a unique, contagious sound. This might be due to her intensive musical training: from a young age, this true stage animal of EDM was taught to master both classical cello and bass guitar. Alison Wonderland is also a talented vocalist. Her vocals are prominent in her songs, giving her remixes as well as her original productions a vibe of their own. On stage, the energetic Aussie puts on a wild party of epic proportions. Her performance in her latest video for the track 'Happy Place' gives an accurate impression of that talent for showmanship. Her slot at Tomorrowland is not to be missed!

Dutch melodic hardcore DJ Lindsay van der Eng has been the face of the Korsakoff project since 2004. The project was originally started by Bart Kok, also known as Catscan, releasing its first single in 2001. 'Unleash the Beast' became the anthem for Masters of Hardcore in 2004. Korsakoff ’s first mix album, 'Face to Face', came out in early 2007 and was a collaboration with DJ Outblast. Since then, the Dutch grande dame of hardcore has toured the world: from the United States to Scandinavia and everywhere in between, her popularity seems to know no bounds.

Stemming from Belgian Limburg, Goldfox started spinning records at the age of 14. This vinyl junkie brings a game of electronic house, techno, breaks, and acid stompers to the table, then adds a twist or two to make the groove his own. The Fox isn't just headstrong when it comes to his tunes – he has grown to be a renowned promotor as well, thanks in part to his involvement in the oldschool concept Rave Our Souls. DJ'ing is what the he does best, though. Goldfox has spent more than half his life behind the decks, building his reputation steadily, and has not only appeared at Tomorrowland but also, for example, at Pukkelpop and Dour.

13h30 – 14h30

To Jauz (real name: Sam Vogel), music knows no boundaries. Whether it comes to combining the most sonorous tunes into high-energy sets or pushing talents through his own label Bite This!, Sam refuses to obey any status quo. He went from aspiring producer to stardom in just under a year and proved himself to be one of the lasting forces of a new generation of musical tastemakers. A must-hear for all those who dig dubstep, bass, and trap, as well as those who fell in love with his latest releases like ‘Claim to Be’, ‘The Game’, ‘I Hold Still’, and ‘Ghost.’

Working under a variety of aliases, BLR a.k.a. WSTLNDR a.k.a. Leon Bolier has been one of the hidden gems of the Dutch dance scene for 15 years. Originally starting out as a trance producer, he became influenced by the ‘big room’ house sound and ultimately developed his own, idiosyncratic style: deep rather than in-your-face, but with a relentless drive and a twist of pop to top things off. One of his recent achievements is the Rave & Crave collab ‘Taj’, released on his home label, Spinnin’. Fans of hypnotic four-to-the-floor beats with a dark edge are sure to enjoy the work of this tireless producer.

CRAIG DAVID PRES. TS5 Tomorrowland is all about dance music, and dance music is mostly played by DJs – but what if you wanted to change things up once in a while? Besides a wide choice of certified selectors, a large number of live musicians are also diving down to Planaxis with you, from modular synth wizards to bands. Today, a whole stage has been dedicated to them, and one of those standing at the ready at the Live stage is Craig David. With over 15 million worldwide record sales to his name, and a serious career in pop music that has had him in the limelight since 1999, it’s safe to say that Craig is an established musician. From his worldfamous Artful Dodger feature ‘Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)’ to solo hits such as ‘7 Days’, his soulful voice has made billions of speakers vibrate worldwide. Since a number of years, Craig has been touring the world with a new, unique crossover concept: TS5. Spinning well-known pop, R&B and soul by all kinds of producers, David sings along and makes every song into an spectacle entirely his own. With lots of artful mixing in between the singing, and decades of experience under his belt, Craig David presents TS5 is one live act you do not want to miss.

‘Call on Me’, anyone? Far from a regular charttopper, Eric Prydz has proven his worth as a producer of poppy dance anthems and as an underground force to be reckoned with. Under his own name as well as his aliases Cirez D and Pryda, he moves between uplifting progressive house and percussion-rich techno with ease. The title track from his most recent album, ‘Opus’, infamously got the remix treatment from Four Tet, while the original and several other tracks became dancefloor hits in their own rights. Eric’s twohour-long closing set at his own Pryda stage is set to be a lesson in house music!

A hyperintelligent sonic nightmare that always comes in guns blazing: TWR72. He started out with electro along the lines of Ed Banger and Gesaffelstein, but has since switched to techno, and this Dutchman’s techno is all about atmosphere. Stripped-back and seemingly quite hollow, it takes some time to reach into the deeper regions of your musical awareness, but once it does, it bites down deep and will not let go. Every element is thought through, and with off-beat, detuned harmonics and carefully calculated percussion, TWR72 is sure to lower the Cage by about an extra storey.
