A SEA OF HARMONY AWAITS!
Who could have known the People of Tomorrow were such competent swimmers? With strong and steadfast strokes, friends, you dove down into the heart of Planaxis. Through winding passageways and between soaring seashells you floated, exploring ever more of the ocean floor and making it your home. In the cracks and crevices down there, something miraculous had happened: fabled creatures of the deep, two-legged mermaids and luminous fish-men known only from fairytales, had grown to become reality in Planaxis’ fertile soil. With these watery wonders gliding all about, it was not hard for you to join.
Soon, the crowds of Tomorrow moved like shoals of fish: in waves, in wondrous patterns, each and every single person enraptured in their own movement, but amounting to an organic whole nonetheless. True citizens of Planaxis, the ocean runs in your blood now; and as the oceans out there flow across the world as one, you have become connected into a single unity. During your next day in paradise, friends, there is a task at hand for you, as Planaxis’ ultimate purpose has not yet been met. Use your shared energy for good, for something beyond unity: use it to harmonize with all the world. Now off into the blue you go!

THE STORY OF PLANAXIS No one knows exactly how, why, or when Planaxis was built. The identity of its Architect is long lost to history, its first inhabitants are no longer with us. One thing was preserved for all these years, however, and has surfaced with the call for the People of Tomorrow to unite: a diary, waterlogged and old, but supposedly belonging to none other than the visionary mind behind Planaxis. Its third entry details the building process.
Well, well, well. There it is, slowly working reefs, our home is shaping up: the great its way out of the seafloor: Planaxis. Shell by nautilus whirls elegantly over newly built shell, bit by bit, it’s finally coming together. living quarters, the garden dome is nearing its apex, and the observation towers come closer It was a rough road getting here, and building to the surface every day. the big structures remains a struggle. From furious storms to treacherous earthquakes: In the middle of it all, my proudest creation mother Nature is showing her most impressive already presides over the proceedings. The side. All these dangers are part of the beauty humble seahorse. It is tough and proud, of the ocean, though, and ultimately, we will swimming upright amidst its fellow fish, succeed. We are working with the seas, not but also fragile and endangered. It must be against them. protected and cherished. This little creature, then, is the most fitting symbol imaginable, At this point in time, the fruits of our labour and shall be Planaxis’ guardian and central are beginning to show. Between the ancient gathering place from now until forever.

SULTRY MORNINGS ON
DREAMVILLE Always remember to fall asleep with a dream, and wake up with a purpose. On Friday morning, the People of Tomorrow are slowly getting up to recount new experiences on DreamVille. The Gathering last Thursday, that new crush on the other side of the field, the amazing 2 a.m. pizza last night… stories are shared all about. While some are still trying to open their eyes and realize where they are (or where they should be), others are already good to start their day. The running for the first spot at the showers has started, the hunt for fresh bread is on, and the ones at the front of the queue for the grocery store are about to be treated to fresh bread. All the while, the Morning Fairies are trying to relieve some of the tropical heat with magical aromas and pixie dust. The following early birds all share their stories and give you tips on how to wake up, the DreamVille way!
Alejandro from Uruguay likes to take a nap in the early morning. “I always make sure I rest well for the remainder of the day,” he says.

Bohemian-themed cabanas in the middle of a festival camping? Yep, even that is a possibility at the fabled city of DreamVille! Called the Kokono accommodations, these lodges are located in the middle of the Montagoe chill-out area. It’s at the Kokonos where you can enjoy the luxury of a raised wooden deck with a canvas roof, foam-mattressed beds, and your own power outlets. “If the water doesn’t come towards us, we’re just going to make sure there is plenty of refreshment here,” Britt laughs as she tests the waters with her Dutch friends Emily, Eva, Steven, and Marc.
Anthony and Noémi from Italy casually sit in front of their tent. “We feel well rested, so let’s see what adventures we’ll face today!”
From one pretty fairy to another, Madeleine from England recognizes the chanting of the magical creatures around her. “I cannot wait to start my day. The entire squad is here to wake me up!” she laughs.
WORK THAT BODY
As the temperature is still stuck somewhere in between ‘WTF’ and ‘OMG’, you might feel a little discouraged towards doing your regular workout routine. Coen, instructor at the Matrix Recovery Area, has come up with one single exercise that will boost your day – no extra workout needed to feel fit! “It’s a quick workout that you can do as many times as you want. It’s a great time saver, and therefore a favourite in our gym.” 1. 2. 3.
Lost something, in need of water, or looking for a good chat? Visit a District House, located at various places on the DreamVille grounds. Here is where you can gather all of the information you need in order to make your stay as pleasant as can be. Lana (22) and Iris (20) love working here. “I think the Houses are one of the few places where you can find order in this beautiful chaos,” Iris says with a giggle. Lana agrees: “Every day is fascinating here, since we meet people from all over the world. You hear so many crazy stories, I love it!”

Wash your worries away
Even though there aren’t any flowers growing in this garden, the serene smell of fresh flowers comes your way. You can bring your clothes to the Miele Laundry Garden and get them washed, dried and ironed. And it’s all done with a big smile from the charming laundry ladies. “We have mostly guys coming in to wash their shirts. Perhaps they didn’t prepare for the weekend as well as the girls did.” At the Garden, you can sit back, relax and wait for your clothes to get spotless. “The best part is that you don’t have to wait here if you don’t want to. You can just continue with your daily routine and we’ll send you a text message when your laundry is ready!”
As I walked around Tomorrowland’s fields, Again I found a place to shield. I want you to find me, and send your selfie. So I am daring you to to try, And make your picture into my DMs fly. Or to today@tomorrowland.com is where it can be sent, Then I’m the one to choose the winner in the end The lucky winner of today is already here So in order to find me, make sure you shift up a gear!
A HAVEN FOR TOMORROW
If there’s one thing you need to remember to survive this weekend’s shenanigans, it’s the fact that quality shut-eye at a comfy haven is key. Pentahotels have got you covered with their Tomorrowland-themed hotel in Brussels, where complimentary cocktails, cushy beds and a pre-festival gathering place for Global Journey guests are on offer. The Penta-experience continues at DreamVille, where they host 5 tents at the DreamLodge, a luxurious full-serviced camping area with its own restaurant, bars, and beauty parlour. With access to the VIP deck of The Gathering and a private chill-out zone called the Montagoe, this is glamping like you’ve never glamped before!
Congratulations Jipke and Emilie!
SELFIES WITH A GREAT VIEW Summer in a glass
If there’s one place at Tomorrowland where you can actually taste the summer, it’s at the fountain bar by Aperol. Surrounded by fresh oranges and flowers, skilled baristas create the characteristically cheerful orange drinks. “We have something extra this year,” one announces, “customers can create their own caps and sunglasses today.” At the bar, waitresses Laura (23) and Alicia (23) serve the drinks to the guests. “A lot of people are looking for a refreshment. I’m glad we can help out with that,” they giggle. One of the visitors who are in for a pick-me-up is Douglas from Brazil. He laughs: “I chose this drink because it looks much lighter than a regular beer or a cocktail. It just really freshens me up. Or does that make me sound weird?”
An astonishing Ferris wheel stands at the edge of Tomorrowland. It’s a place where the brave People of Tomorrow can take off to fly around the world. People have flown to Tomorrowland from many cities; so naturally, every pod on the Ferris wheel represents a different one. Niamh from Ireland stepped inside the Stockholmthemed cart and took off. Niamh: “It’s so great to see the entire festival from above. I can’t wait to go for another round by night to see all the shimmering lights.” While on the ride, you can share your selfie with #Brusselsairlinesloop. Your photo flies into the Instagram cloud, and the technicians from Brussels Airlines will have it printed and ready by the time you step out of the wheel. Don’t forget to take this pic with you on every journey yet to come! 7

S E O R E H ) I T N A ( C I N O R T C E L E F O C I S U M E C DAN It goes without saying that DJ culture is peppered with a certain degree of rock ’n roll, though it’s often incorporated into the DJ lifestyle rather than the music itself. Lucky enough for those of you sporting black t-shirts with illegible band logos, and for those longing back to the days of distortion-fueled guitars, thundering drums and raw, raunchy vocals, The Bloody Beetroots are putting the punk right back into electronic dance music. Lead by the notorious and mysterious Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, this is a next-level outfit when it comes to tearing audiences apart. Having started out as mainly a live DJ act flooding the scene with loud, banging electro uppercuts like the well-known dancefloor anthem ‘Warp 1.9’, the release of their third full album, 2017’s ‘The Great Electronic Swindle’, saw them become an actual live band. Rifo plays vocals and bass, assisted by Battle on synths and Edward Grinch on drums. Before their hot-as-hell show at the Organ of Harmony yesterday, Rifo shared his thoughts about playing live at Tomorrowland, the history of electronic music, and the state of the EDM scene today. With ‘The Great Electronic Swindle’ you went from doing mainly live DJ sets towards actually bringing a band. “Mostly right – but actually, the adventure of playing with a band started
9
officially in 2010, and then we had some first live appearances in 2011. But when we released the new album last year, we really cemented our reputation as a live band. I am a musician before anything else. I still do DJ sets from time to time, but the best way to express the music of The Bloody Beetroots is by playing it live, with real instruments and real people. It’s the best option for us in many ways. Firstly, because there’s so much going on musically that you need more than two hands to play all the different sounds. And secondly, because I love the human interaction. It takes the show to another level.” If you look at the video for ‘My Name Is Thunder’ you’re playing in front of a live audience at a rock festival. Isn’t that a long way from Tomorrowland? “The thing is: we can play Tomorrowland as well as rock or even heavy metal festivals without making any compromises. And that’s a great thing, that’s what I’ve always been after, bringing people together with the same perspective and passion. That’s the beauty of music, isn’t it?” In 2013 Daft Punk took a stand with ‘Random Access Memories’, defying DJ culture and what it had become by releasing a funky and soulful album. It seems that you’re doing a similar thing here, by really putting the spotlight on the guitars and drums. “It’s not like I’m giving DJ culture the middle finger – it’s more about bringing some quality content back in the game.
Let’s give the audience something with substance. I’m very well aware of the fact that what we do as musicians can always be reduced to mere entertainment, and I’m a part of the music industry as much as any other artist. It’s our primary job to make people happy, and I fully accept that. On the other hand, I honestly believe that it’s our responsibility to make people think. Think! Especially nowadays, since we’re living in such a crazy cultural depression. Everything has become completely superficial, and I’ve made it my sole artistic purpose to ensure that The Bloody Beetroots is a non-superficial project. Giving people a feeling of substance through dance music: it’s for that purpose that the album, with its seventeen tracks, became so long. It’s also for that reason that there’s so many features and guest singers and musicians. I want people to know the history of music.” One of those guest singers is Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons, probably one of the most vintage-styled and analogue-sounding bands of this moment. How did you get him to sing on an electronic track? “He was down with the idea completely, and I think he blended with the song ‘Nothing But Love’ perfectly. He really made it his own. That track right there may even be the best example of why this experiment worked so well. It was the perfect marriage between analogue and digital.” On other tracks, you got Anders Friden from death metal band In Flames to sound like Jonathan

Davis from Korn, and you even managed to capture more of Eric Nally’s charisma than he ever did on his own Foxy Shazam albums. Is that due to getting them out of their comfort zone? “I just pushed them and I was looking for nothing but the best. I wanted to capture the sound of how I look at them as musicians, but capture the feeling of looking at them as a fan of their music as well. I wanted them to become one with the track. I would have sold my soul just to get the best out of them, that’s the only thing I was after. Music is about collaborating in such a way that one and one make way more than just two.” In 2009, you released a hardcore punk album together with Steve Aoki called Rifoki. How did that come about? “As you may know, Steve actually comes from the California punk scene and he has even played in some screamo bands. At the time we were spending time in Italy working, writing and producing together. And I went like: “Steve, we should just take a break from
all this. We should do something completely different to clear our heads. You like punk music, I like punk music, let’s do that!” We took two days off, jammed together and this album was the result. It was probably the easiest thing I’ve ever done (laughs). If you listen to bands like Descendants or The Germs or Circle Jerks, that’s all pretty basic music, but it comes down to capturing the right moment and just delivering it. But for me and Steve, all that music is part of our roots, and the album that came out of it was part of a bigger adventure.” Talking about Steve: in the past you’ve said that you didn’t see yourselves as being part of what EDM is or what it has become recently. On the other hand, that seems like a bit of a contradiction, given that you pretty much ignited the stomping big room sound with ‘Warp 1.9’. “I forged the movement (laughs). When I say that I don’t want to be a part of that movement, I’m saying that EDM is just a word and nothing more. We ended up crafting a big chunk of the identity of that word. I don’t feel like I’m a part

of the associated world just because I made up the word. The American sound took over EDM and made a big beast out of it. And I don’t say that with any disrespect. I knew that I had started something, I acknowledged that, and the next step was to destroy my brandnew creature. Six months after ‘Warp 1.9’ came out I released ‘Warp 1977’, screaming ‘motherf*cker’ to pretty much the same song. I didn’t have the intention to start a movement or the EDM community, but I did feel a bit guilty (laughs).” The capes you made for this tour are a nod to Tabarro, the opera by the great Italian composer Puccini. You’ve also restyled your masks. Why was that? “Tabarro is another way of bringing other cultures into what we do. But it’s also about putting content into what we do, because if you drop the word Tabarro, journalists will ask you about it. That in turn gives you yet another opportunity to talk about culture and talk about Puccini (laughs). And on the other hand: it’s not that far a stretch from Puccini’s opera to The Bloody Beetroots, is it?”

There are no less than 13 playlist ready and waiting for you to play as loud as you possibly can.
CHEF OF THE DAY Looking for bites that are a little out of the ordinary? Yalla Yalla serves you streetfood, Beirut style. Think falafel, flatbreads, and a variety of vegetarian and meat platters. It all started three years ago when two Lebanese sisters, Mona and Dalilah, teamed up with their friend Hanne, deciding to sha-re their passion for cooking with the rest of the world. “We love to be here,” Hanne (29) says, stan-ding next to Liselot (27). “With our foods, we try to let different worlds collide. We like to share the way we eat with people from all over the world. And what would be a better place than to do that than right here, at Tomorrowland?”
Up your DJ game! Sending all your love
Time to contact the home front? For just that purpose, Hallmark has created a post office like you’ve never seen before. If there’s one word to describe it, it would be love! Esmee: “We've created exclusive TML postcards. People can send these to the people close to them, write them a special message.” After that, you can drop your card in the mailbox, and it will be shipped to your loved ones worldwide. “We’re actually sending all your love!” Good to know: sending cards is free, no matter the destination! Alina from Latvia is sending hers to her mom. “I actually wrote ‘Don’t worry Mom, I’m fine’, as she is always worried about me. I love to travel the world and see new things. I know she supports me in doing that, but deep in her heart she’ll always see me as her little girl.”
At the Pepsi Max Sound of Tomorrow booth, fresh DJ talent gets the chance to show off their skills. In their 15 minutes of fame, they are linked to a professional who teaches them all the tricks of the trade – and they get to take home a video of their performance to show off to their friends, as well. Oscar, Daniel and Daniel (yes, the two friends are both named Daniel) from Spain are some of the lucky ones who got to practice their DJ game in front of a real crowd. “We are all from different parts of our country,” Oscar says. “The three of us met on the internet, as we all share the same passion for EDM.” Daniel laughs: “We were actually carrying a USB stick when we came here, just in case somebody wanted to listen to it.” Their fifteen-minute-tutors Mathy and Vincent are proud of their performance. “It’s really cool that we can provide a stage to fresh talent. We really believe that it can be a unique chance for upcoming talent – those first little cat steps can go a long way!” 11

N a t u r e
Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano are a team unlike any other. Sure, most DJs play b2b sets every once in a while, but could you imagine Sunnery without Ryan, or the other way around? Inseparable friends, the two grew up with a healthy dose of Caribbean beats. When they added a dose of additional power to the percussive tracks of old, their sound started to seep into the hearts and souls of EDM and house DJs across the world. En route to their performance at yesterday’s Sexy by Nature hosting, the two Amsterdammers spoke about their brand new EP ‘Affective’, teamwork in the booth and, of course, their personally curated stage. You’re about to release a new EP called ‘Affective’. What’s it going to be like?
Ryan without Sunnery; you are a very close DJ duo. How do you work in the booth?
Sunnery: “We don’t like following a certain sound, so we made beats we weren’t sure other people would like. They’re different, but we’re extremely happy with the record, and the R&B vocalists were very inspired to work with the beats that we sent over to them.”
Ryan: “We always play back to back. Sunnery grabs the mic a little more often to hype up the crowd, and I make sure the people backstage are alright and having fun – that’s what I’m very good at.”
The video supporting the four tracks tells the story of a guy meeting the woman of his life, after which he is suddenly unable to find her anymore. Is this something that has happened to you in your own lives? Sunnery: “I used to fall in love every two weeks as a teenager. One time, Ryan and I went on holiday to Lloret de Mar in Spain, and there was a girl working behind the bar at one of the places we went. Oh my God, she was just something else! When we went back home I thought – I really need to go back and find her…” There’s no Sunnery without Ryan, and no
12
What happens when one of you is terribly ill or hungover – do you then decide to play a solo gig? Ryan: “Ahead of one of our first bookings in Canada, I started to feel super sick on the flight. Then when we got to the green room – which was jam-packed with beautiful dancers, by the way – I saw a toilet, went in and just didn’t care how much noise I’d make… During the set, I walked back and forth to the toilet about twelve times, I think. They even gave me a chair to sit on. That’s how much we like to be separated (laughs).” Sunnery: “I once went to Brazil to do a gig by myself. That was a very special case, though, as Ryan’s wife was due to give birth. It happened to be

falling in love with tribal house; it’s where it all comes together.”
You’re hosting your own Sexy by Nature stage at Tomorrowland this year. How did that come about?
Do you try to find a balance between hits and lesser-known tracks in your sets?
Sunnery: “It’s the result of a combination of factors. We’ve been DJ’ing for years and years, we’ve made lots of friends, and we’ve really come to a point where we’ve claimed our own style of music. The result is that other people in the scene start respecting you. Tomorrowland is great, as they look for real and genuine identity when they select their artists. So they told us to stick to doing our own thing, to not compromise at all, and that makes us very happy.” The tribal element in your sets and productions is always strong. Where does your mutual love for percussion come from? Ryan: “It’s really got to do with our upbringing. My mum loved salsa and merengue, and even though I don’t get to hear that music anymore nowadays, it’s been a huge influence for me. My dad listened to jazz, and that’s how we ended up
Sunnery: “It really needs to fit within what we’re doing at the moment. It can be super commercial and it can be something more obscure. If it’s ‘us’, we play it, if it isn’t, we don’t. Actually, a track like ‘One Kiss’ by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa, there’s just no way we wouldn’t play that song – but we still want to surprise our audience, so we always play an edit hardly anyone has ever heard.”

PASS THE DUTCH Sunnery & Ryan kick off a relay race of questions between the friends who joined them at their Sexy by Nature stage. The first one is from them, for Fedde le Grand: “Hey, Fedde! You’ve played Tomorrowland a bunch of times, what’s your best Tomorrowland experience, and why?”
Do you always agree on the tracks you want to play? Sunnery: “We regularly have different opinions on tracks, although when I find something new, I’m often about 99% certain that Ryan will like it too. Sometimes it happens that Ryan suprises me with a new track and I don’t like it at first, but then after a few plays I start to think he’s right, and it turns out to be a total banger. I’m planning to play an amazing track here at Tomorrowland and I can’t wait for Ryan to hear it, he may not even survive!”
“Must be last weekend, because it's still fresh in my mind and I got to play three sets: two secret ones, up close and personal with fans, and my Mainstage gig. I love that balance!” Next up is Sander van Doorn. “Sander, which artist would you recommend everyone to go see and why?”
“Definitely Maceo Plex! He’s made huge steps over the last years and I absolutely love his dark and moody sounds.” Sander leaves the stage to Burak Yeter: “What do you like most about European festivals?”
“The only time one of us has ever played a solo set is when Ryan’s wife was about to have a baby.”
“I love playing in Europe, the vibe is amazing and I think people act more freely and open at festivals than in clubs. This was my first time playing at Tomorrowland, and it’s definitely one of my most spectacular festivals so far.” On we go, go Bruno Martini. “Bruno, you’ve worked with Sunnery and Ryan in the studio, what was that like?”
“It was an amazing experience to work with them! We had real good chemistry and we’re both really happy with the outcome. Let’s spill the beans: we’re working on new projects together, so this is definitely not the end of our cooperation!” 13

CHERRY MOON TRAX
HOUSE MUSIC HISTORY AT THE MAINSTAGE Belgium. It was the unlikely epicentre of dance music during the midnineties. Flanders especially was generously endowed with influential record shops, rave labels and clubs in the absolute middle of nowhere. They weren’t downtown, they weren’t even uptown; it was right in the middle of the paddocks that clubbing history was made. You had La Rocca, Boccaccio, Café d’Anvèrs… and Cherry Moon, possibly the most (in)famous of them all. It was tightly connected to a legendary DJ and production duo. They are known separately as Yves Deruyter and DJ Ghost, their joint stage name is Cherry Moon Trax, and they, well, have a story to tell.
Many in today’s crowd will have been too young to remember the sound of Belgium. How did it feel to play in front of this massive crowd – many of whom may have never heard your style of music before? Ghost: “We didn’t expect it, but the crowd went mental and we really appreciated their open-mindedness. By the way, I love you, Yves!” Hold up – why did you just say ‘I love you’ to Yves? Ghost: “He’s just such an amazing guy, I can tell him anything. When we’re DJing and I want to take things in a certain direction, I tell him and he follows and it works the other way around, too. It just makes me happy to hang out with him.”
Tonight, right at this moment, we can see a sort of Cherry Moon in the sky; it’s a lunar eclipse, also known as a ‘blood moon’. That’s got to have you excited? DJ Ghost: “Absolutely! Haven’t you seen us on stage? Belgium has been begging for rain over the past weeks, we started playing, and look: big drops of water came hurtling from the sky (laughs). The crowd asked for music and rain and we gave them… everything!”
True friendship lasts forever, they say! Last one. It’s an obvious question, but… what was the cherry on the cake during your Mainstage performance just now? Yves & Ghost: “Everything, from beginning to end. The fact that we were asked to do what we always do because Tomorrowland really wanted us to. We didn’t fake anything, yet we received nothing but love. It felt so good!”
Belgium has a history of great influential clubs outside of big cities. How on Earth did this all happen in the countryside? Ghost: “People would come from as far as Germany and France because we played a certain type of music and the atmosphere was unlike anything else. It could’ve happened anywhere, it just happened to happen in Lokeren by coincidence.” So how would you best describe the club? Yves Deruyter: “Everybody just stood there and didn’t dance. No… seriously, it was sex, drugs and rock & roll, and we really enjoyed it.” The Belgian scene was very strong in the nineties. Everybody, including the big British DJs and producers, bought whatever came out on R&S and Bonzai Records. What was it like to be right in the middle of it? Yves: “I don’t remember much of that time…” Ghost: “No Yves, this is a serious interview! I worked at a record shop closely affiliated with Bonzai Records. Bonzai label boss The Fly and I would travel to Germany, the Netherlands and the UK to buy ultra-rare records. I’d give them to influential DJs like Yves to play out, and the records were so exclusive, they became known as the sound of Belgium.”

MC Stretch He is the voice of Tomorrowland and speaks from his heart towards the People of Tomorrow every day. What will Tomorrow have in store for us? Mainstage MC Stretch puts the shell to his ear and grows silent with concentration. He nods and smiles, and then nods some more. “Wait a second, it speaks, and its sirens keep singing louder!” After listening for another while, Stretch is convinced. “The future of Planaxis will keep getting better. The story will soon be revealed, more people will gather in their quest towards unification and history will be written here.” But the shell has revealed more to him: “The Story of Planaxis proves that Tomorrowland won’t stop growing and that there are many more new worlds to be discovered. There’s hope for a future immersed in love!”
THE SEASHELL Speaks…
T h e p ro p h ec i e s o f p l a n a x i s Those who dive the deepest bring up the rarest pearls… The nooks and crannies of Planaxis are full of long-forgotten lifeforms and ancient creatures of the sea. Amidst the natural beauty of the ocean, treasures lay hidden – secrets and stories that should be shared with the world for all to see. But where to find them? As anyone who’s ever held a seashell knows, these old and seemingly discarded husks in fact record sounds. The people of Planaxis have been using shells to communicate since time immemorial, storing their thoughts and relaying them to others. As such, every shell tells a story about Tomorrow. If you listen really hard and concentrate on a specific person, event, or object, the shell will whisper their fate into your ear. You can’t ask it to tell you something about yourself, so you’ll have to trust your fellow People of Tomorrow to translate the predictions. What did the shell tell you? Josh puts Planaxis’ seashell to his ear and listens closely. “It’s telling me that Nicolette will have lots of successes and lots of Eric Prydz. Not really lots of him as a person, but she’ll be present at many of his live performances. Oh, and the shell also emphasizes that she’ll be together with me. We are both big fans of Eric, and we’ll stay together for a long time. After our journey through Europe, we’ll head back home, but next year we’ll visit Tomorrowland again.” Well Josh, if that’s what the shell has to say, we’ll meet again next year!
As soon as Nicolette starts listening to what the shell has to say, she and Josh glance at each other. “It tells me his future is going to be with me. History will keep repeating itself, because we met at a concert and will keep falling in love while we’re at festivals. Music brought us together and will keep us together Tomorrow. In the foreseeable future I see him walking, smiling and enjoying Brussels.” On Monday, they will start the final phase of their Eurotrip by travelling to Brussels before heading back to the States.

“I can hear the ocean roar, and it’s like music to my soul.” Kassandra focuses closely on the sound, divining the prophecies the shell has in store for her boyfriend Moises. “It tells me that he will be here every year from this day on, and that he will be very, very successful with his business. Oh, but that’s not all. It is saying something more – wait, I almost can’t believe that that’s true. It’s telling me there will be an edition of Tomorrowland in Mexico!” Dream big, little mermaid!

After the prophecies the shell released to Kassandra, it is now time for Moises to listen and discover the wonders that lie ahead. “She will travel the world, and will visit a new festival at every place she touches down. She loves them, so that’s something nice to look forward to in the future”. Moises also does some foretelling about Tomorrowland: “Next year, the festival is going to be twice as big and twice as colourful.”
Kassandra & Moises, Mexico Ola fascinates sailors from far and wide with her bright mermaid hair. She feels connected to the shell immediately, just as much as she feels at home at Planaxis. “This place is so great, it’s like finding a new family!” She then listens to the secrets the shell has in store for her best friend Kasie. Ola: “Her future will be filled with laughter and she will find her dream job as a director. Oh, and before I forget, she will also be able to get her hands on tickets for Tomorrowland next year, just like she did this year.”
Besides the calm water Kasie starts listening to the serene voice of the shell. Only those who listen well unravel its secrets, after all. Kasie: “Ola will have 3 kids with bright colourful hair just like hers. Not only will they be wealthy, her kids will be very healthy. Even as a mother she won’t skip a year of Tomorrowland. The shell tells me that for the next eighty years she’ll keep coming to Tomorrowland. Not with her kids, but with me.” There is nothing on this Earth worth more than to be united in true friendship.
Ola & Kasie, Poland Jentle is excited to find out which secrets the shell has in store for her best friend Sophie. Normally, the future cannot be predicted, except perhaps by those most versed in magic. But during her stay in Planaxis, Jentle finally finds out some secrets that the future holds for Sophie: “She will live in a beautiful house with her new boyfriend, and will come back to Tomorrowland every year. She was here last weekend as well, and she’ll continue to party and enjoy life for the rest of her days.”
“So, the shell will tell me more about her future? Why have the people of Planaxis kept their magic shells hidden for so long?” Let’s find out what it has in store for the future of Jentle. Sophie: “She will find a nice boyfriend so we can all go out and have fun together. She will also finish her school, and eventually start living with her boyfriend in a beautiful house as well. Even though we’ll both be living a suburban life, we’ll keep on visiting festivals together.” That’s a great forecast, girls!

My heart is in
Havana
It’s the only Cuban rum still made in Cuba, and that is what they’re proud of. Leen, one of the faces of the Havana House behind the Mainstage, says: “We wanted to mix a Cuban vibe with urban influences.” Joel, a visitor who has recently been to Cuba, feels that vibe. “It’s like I’m back on my holiday!” he laughs. “Havana House is a cool hangout to rest and have a drink. It is actually our favourite pre-party before we hit the Mainstage.” Leen tells us that the brand is expanding through music. “Hip-hop and its easy street culture are such a good match for us. It’s actually very satisfying to see that we are providing a place for urban music here, at such a big EDM festival. Of course, I dare to say our rum-based cocktails play a part in that satisfaction,” she goes on with a wink. Besides cocktails, there’s more to en-joy: at the House you can costumize your own tote bag. Go and experience those Cuban vibes!

TASTEMAKERS
from afar
Tomorrowland is a massive place, and walking around in the sun all day sure can make you thirsty. Thirsty for liquid, but also for uninterrupted house, techno, and EDM bangers. Luckily for you there’s a place where you can find it all: the House of Mask stage by Cubanisto! In this glow-in-the-dark area, both Rumand Mojito-flavoured beer are served in custom Tomorrowland Cubanisto bottles; this golden liquid marries beautifully with a fresh slice of orange, and it is the perfect dance companion for the line-up. There is also a photo-booth where you can get silly with your friends and capture that moment forever.
The overwhelming Freedom stage has a captivating appearance which many visitors would like to immortalize in a picture. It’ll say more than a thousand words, after all. Paulina and Maciej are very excited as they queue up for Budweiser’s panoramic photo booth. “It's our first time here,” Paulina says. “We travelled all the way from Poland, and I think taking this picture is something we will remember for a lifetime. Especially since the pictures will be emailed to us afterwards. I always lose the pictures I take on my phone after a while,” she laughs. When asked for how long they have been a couple, they look at each other in the most adorable of ways. Maciej answers: “Six years and counting, that is!”
“I often get the question whether I’m more of a festival type or a club lover. With this area I don’t have to choose!” visitor Thomas says. His friend Cirio agrees. “Oh, and I love the house drink. It’s the first time I tried it, but it definitely won’t be the last!” Featuring Cellini, Denis Horvat, Francisco Y Gael and many others, this stage is the hidden pearl of Planaxis, and something you will definitely not want to miss.
TODAY IS A GIFT “I put this quote on my phone case because it’s my life motto”, Tony from Curacao says. “As the world goes faster and faster, a lot of the people around me don’t see the beauty of the ‘here and now’ anymore. And I just believe we should cherish where we are today – hence, ‘Today is a Gift’. But I absolutely think it’s good to think about the future, too” he laughs. With their wooden, eco-friendly phone cases, SMTH Smooth’s Phonecover stand has him covered. “Ecology goes hand in hand with our vision. With the products that SMTH Smooth offers, we want to bring the world back into contact with nature,” says Kristof van Thielen, who is the manager of the stand. In the meantime, his business partner Dimi Moreels is working on another unique phone case. “We try to do this in a fashionable and trendy way.” Interested in getting your own design? The stand is located close to the DreamVille entrance to Tomorrowland. 21

If you’re a fan of cheese, you should drop by the cheese refiners of Van Tricht. Their Tartiflette is a typical winter dish, but delicious in this weather nonetheless. Veerle, who handles sales, says: “We wanted to serve something with a direct link to the Winter edition of Tomorrowland this March.” Tartiflette is served at skiing areas throughout Europe – with the best cheese on top, of course.

Connie, owner of the stand, tells its story. “The dish finds its origins in Hong Kong. The dough tastes like vanilla. It’s soft on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. And you can make it as much fun as you like with toppings, sauce, and even ice cream!”

It’s called Crispy Patato, Creamy Cheese, Spicy Jalapeño.” The fried potato is topped off with cheese, smokey paprika powder, and jalapeños, of course. “This dish has it all. It’s crunchy, creamy, spicy, smokey, and delicious.”

The family business of Faya Lobi is booming. Shirley, one of the sisters who run the shop: “Our Baras are unique because of their mix of herbs and the filling. Filling is something every restaurant experiments with, but we’re really trying to stand out. We try to make something that looks good – besides tasting delicious, of course.” Vegetarian baras are on offer as well!

LOVE TOMORROW values for a better future Responsibility, nature, innovation, health and respect. These are the five core values of Love Tomorrow, and they all tie together into creating a better world. It works as follows: as People of Tomorrow, we hold responsibility by taking positive actions towards the future. Nature is where it all begins. The Holy Grounds of Tomorrowland are part of a natural environment. It is our duty to treat it with kindness. Lots of successful and fun initiatives are happening at Tomorrowland and DreamVille in that regard, and many of them are all about innovation. Sharing ideas and collaborating creates the most sustainable future, and without innovation there is no future. One great example is the WaterVille Project, which you can read about today. Besides taking care of our environment, it is also important to take care of the mental wellbeing and health of yourself and others. The circle ends with respect; respect yourself, Mother Nature and your fellow creatures. If we live by these five values, we are ready for a better Tomorrow together.

WAT E RV I L L E : S AV I N G WAT E R FO R P L A N A X I S What would the Story of Planaxis be without water? Water is very precious, and it’s important not to waste a drop. A few years ago, Love Tomorrow launched a research project called WaterVille. With this innovative project, measurements were taken on how much water the visitors of Dreamville used when showering. Smart meters monitored water consumption in some of the showers, and certain showers were equipped with systems that influenced the shower time of the visitor in a subtle way. Different techniques were tried out: some showers had a light that slowly faded out, others had communication about water consumption or a pulsation in the water. The project has returned this year, and wants to inspire the People of Tomorrow to take shorter showers. Do sensors that explain how much water you consume make you take shorter showers? We’ll find out!
C A M P 2 C A M P: C I RC U L A R C A M P I N G Yesterday Love Tomorrow highlighted renting CAMP2CAMP packages from the camping gear that was left behind last year. Today we focus on the social benefits. CAMP2CAMP does not just provide camping gear to the People of Tomorrow who come in from all around the world; the local community also benefits from the project. Love Tomorrow is building a CAMP2CAMP ‘sharing economy’ rental service together with re-use shop Ecoso. Local members of CAMP2CAMP will be able to rent camping gear for holidays as well as for their summer BBQs in the garden. Those in need can also rent camping equipment; people in vulnerable positions, for example, or youth organizations. They will be provided with tents and other camping gear for next to no cost. In this way, CAMP2CAMP adds social value and makes festival camping a circular activity. Joining the CAMP2CAMP project means caring for nature and caring for all People of Tomorrow.

Once upon a time, techno was a predominantly male-dominated affair. It still sort of is, actually, but clearly some of the best DJs to have conquered the clubs lately have been female. After a spectacular Mainstage appearance last week, Charlotte de Witte has returned to a musical habitat somewhat closer to her roots, hosting a KNTXT stage at her home country's favourite festival. Also on the bill is the amazing Birmingham-based ambassador of beautiful and hard-hitting techno, Rebekah. More up-and-coming but equally interesting is Russian talent Nastia Reigel, and closure is provided by sorry, it's a boy - Berghain resident DVS1.
None other than wonderboy Lost Frequencies is responsible for hosting one of the most uplifting and versatile stages this weekend. So who’s blasting their tunes out of the Organ of Harmony’s pipes today? There’s Zonderling and their oddball house music, Felix de Laet a.k.a. Lost Frequencies himself bringing sweet and melodic allround dance tunes, smooth vocal house duo Ofenbach, a set by New York’s Armand ‘You Don’t Know Me’ van Helden and - to top it all off - an eclectic Dolly Parton meets Röyksopp party, presented by the world famous 2manydjs. This is the place to be if you just want to get lost in the frequencies!
If you happen to be one of the older ravers in Boom, and especially if you’re carrying a Belgian or Dutch flag, you may very well be acquainted with the pride of this country’s hardcore, rave and trance scenes: Bonzai Records. The iconic Bonzai tree is something of an institute, with their first records dating from as early as 1993. Representing the label’s melodic sound this year are absolute party animal Franky Jones, German trance legend Olivier Lieb, and of course one of Belgium’s biggest, former La Rocca and Cherrymoon resident Yves Deruyter.

ZONDERLING
How a strange concept took over clubs as well as charts
Zonderling is Dutch for ‘sort of strange’, and it’s a fitting description for the dark and weird house duo from the remote north of the Netherlands. After the underground hit ‘Sonderling’ and club smasher ‘Tunnel Vision’, Zonderling recently broke through to a mainstream audience with the Lost Frequencies collab ‘Crazy’. We spoke to Zonderling’s DJ Jaap de Vries about the surprisingly rapid rise of the duo’s popularity, and guess what – even Jaap finds it hard to explain. Something about the right time and the right place, maybe? We’re not going to lie, Zonderling is a peculiar name for an artist. Where does it come from? “In Dutch the word means something like a loner, an eccentric, and that’s what our music is, really. We’re the odd man out.” Your very first hit ‘Sonderling’ closely resembles your artist name. What’s the story behind that? “The title to the song is so simple because Martijn, who does the production for Zonderling, isn’t very good at coming up with track names (laughs). It’s that simple a story!” Zonderling is a duo and you both have very specific roles. How come? “Martijn is one third of bass and breaks project Noisia, and I run the Noisiaassociated record labels, so we were working together before we started
Zonderling. When Martijn spoke to Jorn from Spinnin’ Records during a festival in the US, he played him some Zonderling tracks and Jorn was like: ‘I want to put this out!’. Martijn’s thing is producing, he loves being in the studio, and I have always been a DJ through and through. So while Martijn gets involved with what I blend into the sets on stage, I’m creatively involved with the production. We both know exactly what to do and it works extremely well. Martijn comes along with me for the very biggest gigs though; he’ll be there for our show at Tomorrowland, which is pretty unique.” Your music has a very international feel to it, but for a long time, many of your songs carried the weirdest Dutch titles such as ‘Pruillip’, ‘Telraam’ and ‘Zinderlong’. You’ve changed this for the more recent releases. Why? “We had a lot of fun using the crazy titles. Martijn often visualises things when he makes a track and the titles are related to that, but with global releases, it doesn’t work. And it makes sense to refer to the lyrics when a track has vocals. The Dutch titles made our songs recognisable, but our sound does the job now in that respect; people often say they immediately recognise our songs. They have the Zonderling feel. It’s a very detailed and layered sound, and we find people are starting to copy it more and more.” So you’ve found your own sound – what does that do for your career? “Our productions are all characterised by a certain atmosphere. You feel like
you’re in your own world when you listen to them; they’re a little strange. The challenge for us is to navigate between sticking to our own sound and reaching a wider audience; to find a way to make it work on the dancefloor.” Both of you grew up in the quiet north of the Netherlands, away from the busy clubbing landscape of Amsterdam. What was that like? “It works for both of us. We like the peace and quiet of the countryside, it’s our comfort zone. I travel back and forth to Amsterdam Airport every week, but I don’t mind. And we still sort of have the rest of the Netherlands with all of its dance music infrastructure in our backyard. There’s the annual ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) conference, you have all the agencies there – it’s super convenient.” ‘Crazy’ – a track you did with the famous Belgian producer Lost Frequencies – turned out to be a massive hit, reaching number one in the charts in some countries. What was it like to work with him? “We started working on ‘Crazy’ and it was finished before we knew it. Our sound is obviously very different from Lost Frequencies’, but it was a very organic process where Felix (Lost Frequencies’ given name) delivered some ideas with vocals and guitar riffs to Martijn to work on. The cool thing about the song is that it’s very 50/50. The pop elements are Felix’s and the drop, the groove and the synth, that’s us.”

CHARLOTTE DE WITTE FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY KNTXT (ARCH) - 20h00 - 21h30 If Dave Clarke is the Baron of techno, then Charlotte de Witte is definitely the Queen. Riding the cusp of a wave of fresh talent roaring through the techno scene, she’s made many famous fans – Chris Liebing and Richie Hawtin, to name but a few. Today she’ll host her own KNTXT stage at the Arch alongside One Track Brain and Rebekah, and in November she’ll be hosting her own KNTXT XXL night at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. Make no mistake about it: Charlotte’s career is going as fast and as hard as her powerful beats.
“Yeah, absolutely. Especially on the last EP, which was recorded exactly a year ago. I feel that that one is more profound, in a way, than what I’ve done before. It’s not conceived with the idea that people need to dance to it as much. I basically just wanted to do whatever the hell I wanted. And if there’s more tracks on the EP, you have the room to elaborate and tell different stories throughout.”
“It’s much more interesting to lose yourself in just a few elements.”
You’ve released two EPs this year already, compared to last year’s four. Does that mean there’s more to come? “I have one more track coming out later this year on a compilation album, but that’s about it. I really need to get back into the studio. I’ve played so many shows that I haven’t really had the time to fire up my laptop and produce. I’ve underestimated my schedule a bit, I’m afraid. It’s been a wild ride. I pretty much haven’t been home at all in May. I did buy a new laptop to try and create some things on tour, but mostly, touring gets you so tired that in between shows, you can’t get your brain to function at the level required to write new tracks. You just want to get to bed and empty-headedly watch some series on Netflix. I’ve made some new loops, but that’s about it. It’s a lesson I’m taking with me for my next tour (laughs).”
Melancholia seems to be a big part of your music, as well as the trademark voices you blend in there. Are those the main ingredients? “I love working with those voices. First of all, because they’re so easy to work with. I’ve never learned to play an instrument. I can play some piano, but it took me a while to get to a level that was just a tiny bit better than abominable. Those voices create a hook in your track which keeps it very plain and stripped, which I truly love. And that probably makes it so melancholic, because it’s everything but chaotic music, it’s pure. I find it to be much more interesting to lose yourself in a few elements, rather than overflooding your music with all sorts of sounds.”
Do you feel like you’ve evolved as a producer over the last two years?
How do you feel when someone like Richie Hawtin or Chris Liebing plays your tracks? 29
“That’s simply crazy, every single time. At Awakenings, a couple of weeks ago, Chris Liebing played the same stage I did. I stood there watching him from the backstage as he played three or four songs of mine. I crawled behind him to hug his leg with excitement! The biggest compliment you can get as a techno producer is having your tracks played by one of those big shots. It really honours me to have them supporting me like that. I mean – I’m still a little new to the scene, I’m young, and therefore there’s obstacles to take. You need to keep on proving yourself as you grow. The fact that guys like Chris and Richie have my back is just wild. Techno is a scene where you need to pay your dues in order to get where you want to be - and rightfully so. But when Chris plays my tracks, posts them online and tags me, I feel as if it’s his way of saying ‘she’s new, she’s young, but she’s definitely OK. We’ve got your back’.” You’ll be hosting KNTXT in the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, pretty much the biggest venue in Belgium. There have been drum ’n bass parties and EDM events there, but never a full-blown techno night. What can people expect? “We were just like: let’s f*cking do this and slay! Bigger, better, bolder. Soon, we’ll release the third headliner next to Len Faki and myself, but I can already tell you that we have a line-up that will blow your mind. And production-wise, we’re gonna go all the way. It will be in the spirit of techno, so no confetti, no multi-coloured lights, but rather sober and with an industrial touch to things. It will blast your goddamn head right off!”

2manydjs Lost Frequencies & Friends (Organ of Harmony) 23h30 – 01h00 Hailing from the funky Belgian university town of Ghent, the DeWaele brothers are musical centipedes, always busy, juggling lots of musical projects at once. Together they form Soulwax, a rock band of no small fame that can’t really be called a side-project. When they first started their incredible DJ concept, 2manydjs, back in 2002, no-one else thought to mix up Dolly Parton's ‘You Come Again’ with Röyksopp’s mesmerising early downbeat hit ‘Eple’. It seems pretty insane today, and it was certainly even more left-offield a decade and a half ago! You may not even have heard of some of the genres the siblings blend into their mix: from cheesy, over-the-top prog rock that’s too stuffy even for your dad to the most clinical and hilarious Belgian New Beat anthems, and from the deep South’s most heartbreaking country songs to the most badass grime from East London, it’s all there. Listen to some of their mixtapes on Radio Soulwax (you can find a bottomless pile of them here!) to get in the mood for this very special performance. 2manydjs provide a creative and versatile electronic music & pop crossover unlike anything you've ever seen – even if you don't generally listen to rock and pop music, the duo’s expert showmanship will provide an experience that is not to be missed!

Belgian longtime business partners and close friends Christian Pieters and Marnik Braeckevelt started working together in the early ‘90s. Pieters, also known by stage name Fly, bought his first 7-inch when he was 10 years old and hasn't looked back since, with his first gig at the age of 16. Braeckevelt started DJ'ing at a local radio station at the same age. These Belgian DJ veterans are on a mission to share their inspiration and make you dance to everything retro. If you are looking for that ‘90s hard house sound, you have come to the right place.
Have you heard of Big Beat? It's Fatboy Slim's very own genre, mixing techno, rock, and rhythm & blues. The English producer has been around since 1981, when he learned to play bass guitar in his friend's band and accidentally scored a hit. He started producing in 1988 and has remixed tracks by The Beastie Boys ('Fight for Your Right to Party') and Wildchild. Artists such as Madonna and U2 have since asked him to produce for them. 'Rockafeller Skank', which sports the worldfamous line 'Right about now, the funk soul brother', is just one of many examples why it's impossible to stand still during Fatboy Slim's set.

Crosstown Rebels pres. Get Lost (Core) | 21h00 – 23h00
The tale of Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri is an unlikely one. They first started creating their immediately recognisable strand of techno in Milan, a city perhaps better known for its slightly cheesy Italo disco than for the type of tranceinducing club music Tale of Us are currently conquering the world with. Carmine and Matteo’s career is also unusual because their music is dark, yet somehow appeals to large crowds all over the world. A thirteen-week residency at Space Ibiza and this very closing slot at the Garden of Madness are the very proof of it, and hearing is believing!
German DJ and producer Dixon has held the #1 spot in the Resident Advisor DJ Poll since 2013. Being the odd one out as a deep house DJ in a city known for techno music, Dixon slowly defined his sound over the years, growing into the artist he is today. In 2015, Berlin newspaper Die Tageszeitung wrote that Dixon had 'redefined the sound of Berlin'. As Dixon likes to collaborate with other artists such as Âme and Henrik Schwarz, he often creates his own edits of other artists' tracks to have them match his own sound and flow. This makes his sets creative, enjoyable and unique, yet familiar.

Feel like you haven’t been kickin’ it gangsta enough yet this weekend? Today’s your day, as Lil Debbie has touched down at Planaxis. It’s a good thing to have her here: she’s been one of the funniest women in American hip-hop over the past ten years or so – and she is one of those acts that spruce up Tomorrowland’s universe of DJs with a real live performance. After leaving her first band The White Girl Mob, Californianborn Jordan Capozzi started working on a series of tracks with Houston-based rapper RiFF RaFF, shortly after which she released ‘2 Cups’ together with Dollabillgates. Her magnum opus of silliness features meaningful lines such as “Bended through the city with the gold on my teeth.” Debbie’s taken things a step further still on her new EP ‘XXIII’, a banging record full of collabs with producers you’ll also find on this year’s Tomorrowland bill, including Cesqeaux, Moksi, and Yellow Claw. So if youfind yourself in an urgent need to jump to some hypedup Californian hiphop beats, you’ve been warned and know exactly where to head tonight. Come and see Lil Debbie spit some fire with the Barong Family!
Birmingham-born techno artist Rebekah Teasdale started DJing in 1996 at the tender age of 16. At that young age, she was already very focused musically, listening to 1990s techno artist such as Aphex Twin. Remaining largely under the radar, it wasn’t until 2011 that she started gaining traction after doing a remix of a Matador track, which got picked up by the likes of Chris Liebing and Alan Fitzpatrick. Rebekah’s DJ sets are among the hardest in the scene and people are picking up on it. “Boys, girls, dogs, whatever, they’re all getting into techno at the moment,” are some of Rebekah’s famous words.

Any day is good day to play a Sigala song. His uplifting piano house-influenced tracks make rainy days brighter and sunny days even more cheerful. The video for his mega hit ‘Sweet Lovin’’, where a girl rides her roller skates through an otherwise uneventful but sun-drenched neighbourhood, says it all. Having featured samples from Mariah Carey and vocal collabs with John Newman and Paloma Faith, as well as having done a joint productional project with Chic’s Nile Rodgers, Sigala’s music comfortably sits on the poppier side of the house music spectrum – and let’s hope he stays there for a few more years to come.
