people of tomorrow,
THIS IS YOUR PLAYGROUND NOW! Ladies and gentlemen, human beings of all persuasions: the ice has been broken! Beginning with little cat steps onto the grounds, you quickly poured all over Tomorrowland. The sun, of course, shines happily upon such gatherings, and so caressed your skin with its warm embrace. The Spectaculum, in the meantime, is quite up to steam: once the curtain was lifted, flying dancers rose out of the crowd and performers popped up all across the many corners of the Mainstage. Elewhere, even return visitors must have been surprised as a new stage had grown out of the forest, and a new green rolling hill gave way to the

Symphonic Friends, I believe that yesterday, you’ve already felt it: the joy that we find in harmony. All of Tomorrowland is one great composition. You – the notes, the DJs on stage – the rhythm, we performers – the conductors that bind everything together.
It’s probably still singing ‘round in those pretty little heads of yours, yesterday’s music. Believe me when I say that I have done all I could to make it enjoyable for everyone. I invited all of my musical friends; the techno troupes of Drumcode & Toolroom, the melodic madmen of Monstercat, the energetic ensemble of the Mainstage. I even saw you dance as I played my own symphonies there! I believe that all of Tomorrowland’s musicians, each in their own merry way, brings out that which makes music the most powerful force in the world: harmony. If only there’s music to bind us, harmoniously, we all become friends. Is not harmony the loveliest thing in the world? A well-struck chord, numerous instruments singing in unison? But harmony, as I perhaps already hinted, goes beyond music itself. We see it here, at Tomorrowland, all around us. People harmonize, differences melt away. All sorts of artists, spectators from all walks of life, the wondrous creatures of Tomorrow; they all wind up working together like a symphony’s separate parts. What I ask of you, then, is to listen carefully. Listen to the music itself, of course, but also listen to the whole of this Amicorum Spectaculum; listen to the way all comes together, to the sound of different kinds of people meeting, the subtle harmonics of joyful crowds – listen to the sound that smiles are making all around you. Once you are attuned to it, I promise, your life will be all the richer. And you will be a part – a part of the symphony of Tomorrow!
Melodically Yours,
ERNESTO – Composer & Conductor

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM
DREAMVILLE AWAKENS It’s early in the morning, but DreamVille is alive and kicking already. Literally, as far as the DreamVille Gym in the middle of the campsite is concerned. There’s a bunch of sports-minded ravers bench pressing, punching, kicking, and squatting their hang-over away. At the showers, many enjoy a fresh splash of water, brush their teeth and hair and are getting ready for their first day of Tomorrowland madness. The smell of sizzling meat drifts over the campsite from the barbecues, and apparently ravioli-in-a-can is the new way to wake up. Let’s meet some of the many beautiful creatures roaming DreamVille this morning!
James couldn’t make it. He recently became a dad, so his mates had to come to Boom without him. However, they brought a bit of James along with them! The masks represent James in the different stages of, let’s say, happiness. Those are some ride-or-die buddies you’ve got there, James!
KICKSTART THE DAY Getting up in the morning isn't always easy – and getting up in the morning feeling energized, even less so. DreamVille's very own yoga teacher, Goedele, has some tips to help speed up the process of coming back to life after a rough night. In a quiet corner of an otherwise very hectic DreamVille morning, 35 Villagers are sitting cross-legged in front of yoga teacher Goedele. They are trying to gain some extra energy before heading to the first festival day. With some relaxing music in the background, Goedele takes her students on a 40-minute journey. She teaches Kundalini yoga: "Everyone experiences a sensory overload at festivals, so I try guide them into a moment for themselves. First, we release all the tension from last night. Then, we wake up slowly with some breathing exercises and at the end, we charge the body and mind for the day to come.” But not only those on-site need a boost from time to time. "I have some excercises for the people reading this when they’re back home as well," Goedele says. "The first one is the shoulder roll. Sit with your back and your neck straight and then slowly roll your shoulders backwards. Always stay mindful of your breathing. Then do it the other way around, rolling your shoulders forwards instead. This exercise helps amicorum spectaculum relax your shoulders, which is very nice after a night full of fist pumping to the music."

Today they’re miming their way across DreamVille, tomorrow they might be a bunch of Clowns. Alexandra, Nicholas, Alexander and Aleksandar (all around 25) brought a different circus costume for every day. What would their role in a real circus be? “A hippo!” Nicholas blurts out without a second thought.
INTERCONTINENTAL
BREAKFAST
The International Ambassadors, an especially selected group of people from all the different nationalities present at Tomorrowland, were treated to a breakfast of kings on Friday.
We interrupt Sonne (18), Julia (18) and Robin (18) while they’re in full make-up mode. It’s their first big festival, and already they’ve met a wide array of friendly strangers. “Never judge a book by its cover. Even just standing in line for food together, we’ve come to know sides of people you’d never expect by looking at them.”

“It was so nice! The breakfast came right when I needed it this morning,” Abdel from Egypt says while he’s putting on his pharaoh costume. “The fresh juice and the croissant were the perfect way to start this day. With a hangover like mine, it was a real treat to get my breakfast served in my tent. Now I’m all set and ready to make this day legendary.”
It’s called ‘Edward 40-hands’ and even though it’s still early in the day, Raphi (22) and Roman (22) have been at belgium it for a bit. The goal is to drink what’s taped to your hand before going to the loo… because trying to unzip anything isn’t going to work without your hands available. “I might need some help very soon,” Roman admits.

Rahul (26) lives in Paris, but misses his home country of India a lot. Whenever he can he flies over for a weekend with the family. Yesterday though, India came to him in the form of newfound friend with some fellow countrymen at Tomorrowland. “I’m waiting for them to get back from the grocery store. It feels wonderful to talk my native tongue again!”
Jack (24) has a self-diagnosed poncho fetish; he brought his 3 favourites to Tomorrowland. The one he’s wearing is his thinkingponcho, apparently. “What if society was like a festival? What if we’d just talk, love and have fun with each other, like we do here? Politicians should attend a festival every once in a while.”

TIME TO RECHARGE
Three days of partying, meeting new people and flirting with the person next to you can be draining. It’s absolutely obligatory to recharge from time to time, both for you and your phone! JBL offers the perfect solution, with 6 stands on DreamVille (at the Marketplace and the District Houses) and another stand on the festival site itself, at the main information point. You can get a JBL charger for 16 Pearls, of which 10 are only as a deposit. We don’t expect you to return it, though, since JBL produced them in an exclusive Tomorrowland design! You can swap your charger for a fully charged one at any time this weekend, so you can take your phone right back to the dance floor and leave it to charge in your pocket.
TOO GLAM TO GIVE A DAMN!
MISSING STATUETTE
With the expansion of Tomorrowland over the past years, a new species has joined the green fields of Boom. Sweet little Art for Thought (AfT) statuettes have become inhabitants of the beautiful Tomorrowland grounds and give the festival a little extra fairytale flavour. But just as we’ve started to get used to them, they’ve run away! All we have left is this silhouette. Can you find the corresponding statue on the pages of Tomorrowland Today, or on the Tomorrowland festival grounds themselves? Take your most creative selfie with it, send it to today@tomorrowland.com, and we’ll announce today’s winner in tomorrow’s paper. You don't like my clothes? You have no taste! You think I'm superficial? So what! You think I'm a b*tch? Et alors...? You steal my fancy new lipstick? You're dead. Yesterday’s winners: Debora Schwarzbach & Wibke Rohrbeck
GREATER HEIGHTS
VINI, VICI, VIVA LAS VEGAS The restaurant that probably captures the whole Tomorrowland vibe best is probably B-EAT, located at the food court between the back of the Mainstage and the Wind Stage. This is where the two great loves of the festival come together: food and music, beats and eats. A Tomorrowland DJ provides the beats while a world-renowned chef prepares the food à la minute for a select audience. The city of Las Vegas hosts the B-EAT restaurant throughout the weekend, and yesterday, the delegate chef was none other than Iron Chef America winner Anthony Amoroso. He’s the former chef of the SeaBlue at The Borgata in Atlantic City. He took up the knives while trance masters Vini Vici took on the ones and twos. “It’s definitely a first for me to cook live next to a DJ! But apart from that, the number of couverts doesn’t really scare me as I prepared food for 20,000 people last week at a corporate event,” he says. amicorum spectaculum Chef Anthony does always have music on when he’s in the kitchen, however. “I mean, you have to, right? Music and food go hand in hand. Although our choice of music is usually more democratic than just techno and dance music. We gotta keep everyone happy!”

Behind the Budweiser Freedom Stage a giant circular edifice rises up to the clouds. At the feet of The Loop, the Brussels Airlines Ferris wheel, Americans Ben (22) and Unsh (22) are waiting for their ascent over the Holy Grounds of Tomorrowland. And they have something to celebrate! “We’ve been backpacking for over a month through Europe and visiting Tomorrowland is the climax of our trip,” they tell us. Together we enter The Loop, which swiftly sets itself in motion. “From down there it’s gigantic, but from up here you feel the intimacy of the festival. It’s like an enormous theme park of which the stages are the rides, like a world of possibilities.” If you want to experience the heights of Brussels Airlines’ Amare flights, visit The Loop yourself – it’s free! As you enter you’ll pass through ‘The Dome’ where you’ll undergo, in a full 360° video experience, what it’s like to break through the clouds as the Amare airplane. ARMIN VAN BUUREN
TRANCE, TOMORROWLAND, UNITY One can’t start making proclamations about trance music without putting the name Armin van Buuren in the same sentence. The Dutch DJ has been the leading man in the genre for nearly two decades, but it wasn’t until yesterday that his own live radio concept A State of Trance struck down at Tomorrowland. Armin has played nearly every edition of Tomorrowland since its very beginnings, but it was the first time he hosted his own stage as well as the ASOT radio studio right here in Boom. Together with friends like Ruben de Ronde, Rodg, David Gravell and Andrew Rayel, they made a whopping 13 hours of live radio right next to the Freedom stage. It’s time to make up the state of the union of A State of Trance. Looking at Armin van Buuren, the first thing you see is a man driven by an unbridled and relentless passion for music. A man who looks a whole lot younger than he actually is, a man with levels of energy that rise above many of his younger colleagues. Considering that he’s arguably the incarnation of trance, a musical legend, he’s always pretty relaxed. Having been the principal advocate of trance music since forever, Armin has always been striving to stay on top of the scene he’s helped to build. As the flag-bearer of the trance movement, he’s become one of the most influential figures in EDM in general, too. Even though he lives an extraordinary life as one of the world’s most popular DJs, he has always remained a downto-earth, stand-up guy. He’s constantly on the move, whether creating music in his own studio or en route to the next high-end club or festival somewhere around the globe. Yesterday he took a brief pause just to present his famous A State of Trance concept at Tomorrowland. ASOT’s first appearance at Tomorrowland is a clear case of ‘better late than never’, given the nature of the concept. Armin: “Since the very first episode in 2001, ASOT has basically been a radio show with a non-stop mix of trance and progressive. We want to highlight the full spectrum. Trance used to be just one basic sound but it has become a much broader notion, letting in influences from psytrance and EDM and even minimal. It’s really amazing to see how after 16 years, the show is still growing. Since we started doing visual radio, the numbers have even doubled.” Even though ASOT has been a significant part of what Armin does, it’s way more than merely a vehicle for his own label Armada. “On the contrary: amicorum spectaculum for ASOT it doesn’t matter whether a record
was released on Armada. The intention is that you’ve heard 80% of all the tracks that matter at any given time through ASOT. It’s not the best of Armada, nor is it the best of Armin, it’s the best of trance music at the moment.” The beauty of trance, in Armin’s opinion, is the fact that it has succeeded in expanding towards other genres and influences. It’s a way to keep things fresh, he says. “When you listen to Ørjan Nilsen, you hear a strong presence of Swedish EDM in his music, whereas a lot of other strance records nowadays have some sort of psy bass. The genre’s crossing borders and that’s a real gift for me as a radio host, as it tends to keep the levels of variety up.” For Armin, trance music has always been the core of dance music.
10
“Historically speaking, that’s a fact. There was a time when dance, hardcore and techno were all played together on the same stage and on the same parties. Those days are over. You used to have dance music, and that moniker just about comprised the whole lot. Nowadays it has dispersed into various tentacles: dance in pop music, dance in techno, dance everywhere!” Yet oldschool dance music hasn’t been all that present in the pop charts over the last few years, or has it? “In some ways it has been, as about one half of today’s charts consists out of electronically produced music, and that’s not to be taken for granted.” Armin has had his own share of success when it comes to topping the charts, but big hits like the ones David Guetta belgium writes at the breakfast table aren’t his forte, he

“If we all do and think the same, progress wouldn’t exist, as it is diversity that gets things going.2w” says. “I did a number of big collabs that just didn’t have the commercial potential others do, and that’s perfectly okay. ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ was a massive hit, of course, but back then all I wanted was to make a euphoric record with a great break, not a pop single per se. I learned that creativity is not something you can steer in any direction. You’re in the studio and stuff basically just happens. You’re making music and something beautiful comes out. Music just comes into existence from out of nowhere, I understand that now.” The fact that it took a while before ASOT landed on the Tomorrowland grounds is partly thanks to the fact that trance has been working very hard to keep itself fresh, so it needs to find the right places to keep growing. “I’ve always been reticent about implanting ASOT as

a festival hosting concept, but I’ve got an exceptional bond with the people of Tomorrowland,” Armin says. And before you ask, that’s not something he says to all the festivals! “No, I really mean it,” he goes on, “what I feel is that Tomorrowland has become way more than a festival. There’s music, food, culture and arts. It’s a unity of cultures that embrace each other. It’s almost like a political message to our world leaders: look! Look at what a festival can do to unite people! You know, my mom is still talking about The Beatles and Woodstock, but what happened at that time is happening again right now. Our future presidents and lawyers are right here. The future prime minister of Belgium is probably partying here at this very moment. We’re building up a new cultural base for the future here, by bringing young people from other cultures and creeds into contact with
each other, making them see and accept each other’s differences. Mankind was created from the idea that we are all different, otherwise there wouldn’t have been an Einstein or a Mozart. If we all do and think the same, progress wouldn’t exist as it is diversity that gets things going. We need to embrace that in order to survive. Whether it’s a car or a hamburger or a festival: everything has to advance in order for it not to go extinct. And - to conclude - the same thing goes for trance music!” He said it, and we can do naught but agree. If you missed A State of Trance’s extravaganza of forward-looking music yesterday, be sure to check out the ASOT Radio recording when you get home.

PASS THE DUTCH We asked Armin to pass along a question to one of the many friends he’s brought for ASOT. “I’m honoured to start this carrousel of questions, and my question for my dear ASOT Radio partner Ruben de Ronde is very simple: would you want to headline the Tomorrowland Mainstage? And more importantly: would you be able to pull it off?”
RUBEN DE RONDE
“Wow, that’s a a straightforward question by Armin, isn’t it? Let me think… Well, the answer is yes, of course! Could I pull it off? Absolutely! I think closing the Mainstage is the most beautiful thing there is for a DJ. That’s like winning the World Cup! But let’s pass the ball to Rodg: we just played back to back, if you could change one thing about that set, what would it be?”
RODG
“Hard one, that’s a nasty question to ask. Actually, our set went really well! Maybe it would’ve been better if we’d written a little more new music for Tomorrowland. Because of our touring schedule we weren’t really able to produce as much as we wanted to. But hey, Andrew: you’ve played here a couple of times, what keeps playing at Tomorrowland special?”
ANDREW RAYEL
“It remains special because there’s people from all over the world looking right at what you are doing. Even from countries that are fighting with each other. Only here can you see people standing next to each other and dancing, all in harmony. But hey, David, it’s your turn: would you rather change something in the past or travel to the future? Take that one!”
DAVID GRAVELL
“That’s a hard one, because I don’t really want to travel into the future right now. I’m really enjoying the present time, and there’s not really anything I want to change in the past. But I have to choose, right? I think I’d rather travel to the future, to just have a look around, see where I stand and see where my friends and family are. Maybe I’ll even amicorum spectaculum stand over there on the Mainstage?”

SUPERB STYLING
The hairdresser’s hands run through Hanna’s hair, twisting and turning it gracefully into the right shapes. “It’s the first thing I’ve done at the festival,” Hanna (26) tells us, smiling. “My friend took me here because her long hair was covering her face all the time. Contrarily, I have short hair, so I’m here to challenge the hairdressers. You know, as long as it looks a bit crazy, I really don’t care. We’re at Tomorrowland for the madness, right?”
PUZZLES & COCKTAILS
Do you want to get your hair styled by the cutting-edge trimming wizards of Sebastian, too? Next to the Organ of Harmony stage you’ll find a well-frequented little parlour in which these barbers reside. Here, ten professional stylists will work their magic on your pompadour and get you all fixed up for the festival grounds. The price? Just a mere 5 pearls for the girls, and as a special offer, 1 for the boys!
Three Zimbabwean friends are panicking in the Lipton escape room. Sean (31), Ross (33) and Gareth (25) are attempting to solve all kinds of puzzles and win the game. If they succeed and escape in 15 minutes, they’ll deserve a free Friendship Jar! But it’s not looking too good right now. While Sean is dancing frantically with two flags in his hands, Ross is searching through a pile of blow-up dolls and Gareth tries to listen to a radio for a clue. If they want to succeed and have a shot at their precious prize, they will have to work together and escape the room victoriously! If you desire the Friendship Jar – a pitcher full of ice tea and booze of your own choice – for yourself, you can find the escape room behind the Mainstage, on the balcony next to the right tunnel. Here, you can also lie down in the sun, drink Lipton cocktails and get decorated with free fake tattoos and glitters. No need to escape from this oasis, really!

DREAMVILLE RADIO
SURFING THE AIRWAVES WHERE & WHEN Tune in on: 87.6 FM Every morning from 10:00 to 14:00 Every night from 00:00 to 02:00
Why not wake up and get out of your tent with a nice and easy pack of beats to get you right into the groove? And why not pair those beats with some fresh news from the DreamVille grounds or stories by yourselves, the People of Tomorrow? There is a team of radio-loving youngsters lined up for you at DreamVille Radio to do just that. Their sole mission is to provide you with the best tracks, tunes and dance classics as well as the latest updates on local and worldwide news, peppered with various reports on the festival and its amazing visitors. Day and night! Since 2011 DreamVille Radio has become an essential part of the DreamVille experience. It started out as a small-scaled production after Tomorrowland asked Studio Brussel to establish a radio station on the campsite. Other festivals like Lowlands in Holland and Glastonbury in the UK already had their own radio stations back then, so Tomorrowland couldn’t fall behind. But they sure made up for lost time with DreamVille Radio which, for Studio Brussel, was the perfect opportunity to give its young talents a chance. They did a great job, too: over the past six years, DV Radio has grown out to become the perfect ‘compagnon de route’ guiding the citizens of DreamVille through their wake-up rituals and putting them to bed again at night.
MOST REQUESTED ARTISTS 1. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike 2. Carl Cox 3. Duke Dumont
It’s fair to say these aspiring radio talents are thrown to the wolves immediately, though. In a ‘real’ studio you’re pretty ‘safe’ and in control of everything. You have the time to prepare things, to have a little pre-talk with your interviewees – but none of that applies here. “You never know what is going to happen,” hosts Jill and Robbe say, “but that’s exactly what makes this so exciting.” Every day they host live DJ sets from midnight until 2 a.m., but still, there’s far more adventurous things happening in and around the DreamVille Radio studio. “For instance, yesterday we had a couple of guys dropping their pants and pressing their bare naked butts to the window of our studio. That was, uhm, special. Just like the guys with the Borat costumes,” Jill says. Robbe: “There was also a pregnant woman who just absolutely wanted to take a picture together with us, another first for us, haha!” So what does their daily schedule look like? “Well, we’re here from Thursday morning until Monday at noon, so we’re here for the same long run as the campers, right from the build-up until the very last tent has been removed from the campsite. Our broadcast stops at 2 a.m., then we walk to the crew camping, try to calm down a bit and shake off all the excitement of the day. We go to sleep and wake back up at 8 in the morning for breakfast and the editorial meeting. We get behind the mic everyday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., and then again between 12 p.m. and 2 a.m. Those are some long hours, but we don’t feel that tired. It’s our first time at Tomorrowland so we’re fueled by suspense and adrenaline. And besides, all these passers-by and the smiles on their faces are just what you need to scare off any hint of fatigue.” With a team of four hosts and a total of nine people working behind the screens to get everything into the airwaves, it looks like these radio youngsters are stepping up to the big league this weekend. So whether you have something to say, a special story about Tomorrowland, an experience you’d like to share with your fellow People of Tomorrow or just a song request, drop by DreamVille Radio!

mainstage marvels marvels mainstage
There’s nothing like entering the Holy Grounds that are the Tomorrowland festival site for the first time. This year we walk ardently towards the crown of the festival, the Mainstage. In awe we look up towards the enormous carnival tents, lighthouses and carrousels. But nothing could have prepared us for the rich variety of elements we find upon closer inspection. Throughout the years this enormous stage has transcended the concept of a mere podium for DJs. By day, you can explore all the corners for acts and performances; at night, the stage is lit up with the most insane special effects. Stop and step back for a moment to discover the secrets in and around this piece of art. We’ve already made a start for you, and noted some of the stage’s secrets by day and by night.
When the sun has disappeared far behind the horizon and Afrojack is manning the decks we return. The whole valley in front of the Mainstage fills up with People of Tomorrow, for as far as the eye can see. These folks gather here after a day of roaming around the festival in search of a major spectacle, and they’re bound to find exactly what they’re looking for.
Early on during the day, when we walk up towards the Mainstage on the right side, we walk through a tunnel full of laughing mirrors. Disoriented, we go on, and on the corner of the stage we meet the lovely Vanessa at the Candy&Popcorn stand. She takes great care in preparing sugary treats for the music lovers, so that they can keep their energy levels up. Her special kind of corn, naturally called the Butterfly Corn, makes for the best kind of sweet and caramelized popcorn. It tastes magical, so find her and try them for yourself!
When Afrojack plays the last track of his set, fountains surge up around his decks, and out of the blue some black-and-red figures rise high up in the air, balancing on thin poles in the middle of the crowd. Moments later the beat drops, fireworks burst out of the top of the stage, and the People of Tomorrow are covered in a sea of light and confetti. “This is Tomorrow,” we read right above the cheering DJ. And this imaginative stage is exactly what will stay in our dreams of today, and bring us straight into our fantasies of the night… so we can dream and party on until Tomorrow!
Walking on to the other side of the stage we find Vanessa’s sister. The lovely Astrid lives in the corner of the Mainstage where she spins enormous clouds of cotton candy. When asked why one would need to try one, she contemplates for a second, then answers wisely: amicorum spectaculum “Simply because they taste amazing!” With our face stuffed with all this sugary goodness, we look out onto the stage for one more time before we retreat for the day.
The artwork of the stage, its mechanisms and machinations, are set into full motion. Over the gates, smoke-filled bubbles appear, shot into the sky above the visitors. The People of Tomorrow look up in awe. Some chase the bubbles, trying to pop them, making them release smoke around their euphoric faces. LED and lasers are unleashed over the crowd. The jack-in-abox clown high up on the right-hand corner of the stage laughs down on the crowd uncannily and a lighthouse reaches up mysteriously into the air. The words Theatre Macabre above the tunnel suddenly make sense.

AIN’T NO PLACE LIKE HOME yves v talks tomorrowland What makes a home truly a home? Is it the place you happen to live at, the place you were born, the spot where you grew up? Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes. The love the People of Tomorrow share, the beautiful stages and the amazing tunes resounding around the grounds are what make Tomorrowland our shared corner of the globe. Yves V has been a part of this family from the get-go and knows every nook and cranny of the enchanted lands. Tomorrowland not only holds a place in his soul, but has shaped his life in too many ways to count. We strolled around the grounds with Yves and had an intimate conversation with one of the most revered, yet equally down-to-earth artists ever to call Tomorrowland home.
You can immediately tell Yves is a Tomorrowland native. He’s moving through the crowd with ease in a way only someone who is truly at home could. People start recognizing the face they often see on stage in no time, and before you know it, it’s raining selfies. Yves doesn’t mind at all. He belongs here and has a smile and a moment for everybody.

Our friendly DJ reminisces about to the old days. “I remember playing the Mainstage for the first time. There I am, still spinning vinyl. At a certain point the wind picks up and my needle starts to skip forward. The MC and I had to come up with a solution on the spot, while the music’s playing. So she started entertaining the crowd, chanting
and keeping them busy, while I quickly fixed my needles.” It’s one of his many memories here and he continues digging up stories. “Let’s go back to when the B-EAT restaurant was just starting off. There were maybe a hundred people enjoying their food, when suddenly I started to play. It was a surprise, nobody knew. And it was the beginning of a night my friends still love to talk about. According to them, it was one of the best gigs I ever played, no doubt because of the intimacy of the setting.” The day before I was rocking the Mainstage, can you imagine? From that immense crowd to playing a hundred people, and it’s still engraved in our memories.” He’s stopped for a shy but determined girl with what looks like an Indonesian flag. Yves

is more than happy to make her day and poses for a selfie. You can tell he’s not here to be the big superstar. Yves’ humble streak extends beyond smiling and posing for the crowd. Walking around backstage, he greets or is greeted by pretty much everybody working the festival. It doesn’t matter if it’s a security guy or a medic, a reporter or the CEO, this is his family. “One thing I admire about the guys making all of this happen, is that they’re not in this for the money. Sure, it sells out within an hour nowadays, but back in the days when Tomorrowland wasn’t on the level it is now, they stuck with their vision. belgium They struggled, they persevered, they kept going. I think the one thing that’s
amicorum spectaculum
belgium
“a festival’s success is often dictated by the line-up, but here, people actually come for the vibe of tomorrowland itself” working so well for the guys is that they’ve never compromised on the festival itself. Everything is next-level. Year after year they set the standard for the world to follow. That goes for deco, for artists, for the tale they’re telling and the music that’s in the middle of everything.” By always pushing boundaries, they’ve achieved something only few accomplish. “Whereas the lineup often dictates the success of a festival, here people actually come for the vibe of Tomorrowland itself. They’ll go all out no matter who’s playing where. That doesn’t excuse us from putting together one hell of a show, but Tomorrowland has achieved that much sought-after balance between music and experience.”
It took a while for the enormity of the festival’s worldwide reach to sink in with Yves; it only happened when he went on a well-deserved holiday to Mexico. “So imagine me there. I’m just a guy on holiday. Not playing gigs, not doing anything with music for a change. I’m just there with my buddies when suddenly everybody around us starts talking about Tomorrowland. I don’t know how the conversation got there, all I know is that the realization suddenly hit me. When you’ve been involved in something from the very beginning, it’s easy to lose sight of how much it means to people who haven’t been.” Yves encounters the message of unity that makes this weekend so amazing in the farthest corners of the world. Currently, Asia is an upcoming scene. “I’ve been playing in countries like Myanmar on a regular basis. Asia is new to the whole electronic music vibe. They might not have the history we’ve got in Belgium or The Netherlands, but they are so incredibly passionate. One of the differences is that they’re craving for tunes a bit harder. What we play at the Mainstage, they play at the club. It’s a part of the world that’s going to play a huge part in the scene in the next few years.” The world unites at Tomorrowland, that’s something that Yves experiences firsthand. “I’ve made so many friends, met so many people over the past years from all
amicorum spectaculum
across the globe. You know what’s funny? A lot of them are here this weekend. My phone has been ringing off the hook with calls and texts to meet up, all from my international friends.” Having been in the middle of the madness for quite a while, Yves has a unique perspective on where dance is going. He already mentioned the blossoming scene in Asia, and another thing worth noting is the music itself. After a period where the drops couldn’t get any louder, we’re moving into the era of incorporating live elements into the music, according to Yves. “Tomorrowland lives up to its name musically by looking further than what’s popular today. One thing you’ll notice this weekend is that many musicians are adding live features to their tunes. Take Oscar & The Wolf, for instance. I believe it’ll bring a bit of rock ’n roll back into the music.” It’s time to let Yves go. He has people to see, hugs to give and places to go. The energy of the People of Tomorrow reflects in his eyes as he’s walking back to our initial meeting place. Yves is here for you, thanks to you, and will give everything he has to live up to your expectations. And let there be no doubt. Yves will deliver, for he is the very embodiment of Tomorrowland.

EXPLORING THE TASTES OF TOMORROW Where do the People of Tomorrow settle down, hungry from the long hours of madness in front of the stages? Spread across the festival site you will find a wide spectrum of kitchens, as varied and high-quality as the musical lineup. These stands, trucks and tents offer you gateways to the world through taste. You can travel as far as the Thai River Kwai or as close as the Flemish chocolatiers. On the map below we’ll help you explore these territories and offer you a compass to navigate the overwhelming amount of delicacies.

For party people with an exotic taste Bart de Pooter has two meat skewers to choose from: a freshening Italian variant with parmesan cheese and basil, or a Mexican one with jalapeños. Get yourself spiced up for the dancefloor!

“At Bad Ape, you can get the one and only King Coconut, the best in the world! We’re the first German cooks on Tomorrowland, bringing you Vietnamese food, prepared by chefs who work in Michelin star restaurants,” Mo says to us. He is not just a chef, but also a DJ!

“Apart from our Belgian cheese, we also make bagels with Italian cheeses, like gorgonzala with a mostarda of strawberry.” If you’re crazy about cheese, like Kaj Veraert of the Kaasmakerij, this is the place to be!

SPIRITS OF CAMARADERIE Next to the only round bar at the festival area, on the way from the Freedom stage to the Organ of Harmony, four German pals sit next to a Friendship Jar filled with magical spirits and flavours. The pitcher contains Tomorrowland Special, a blend of honey, Absolut Vodka, lavender, lime, soda, and ice. It’s a cocktail rumoured to bring camaraderie to whoever shares a sip. Ole (24) explains to us: “It’s great to share a cocktail together with my brother and friends. Friendships means a lot to me, that’s why we’re here together. But to be honest, at Tomorrowland it’s like everyone is part of one big family of friends!” If you want to enjoy a fancy refreshment together with your (soon-to-be) friends, too, there are numerous places on the festival site where you can enjoy cocktails like Mojitos, Margheritas and Tomorrowland Specials. Just keep your eyes open for the ‘Cocktail’ signs next to the big stages!
VODKA & TONIGHT VITAMINS WE UNITE A glitter-covered girl is sipping a strawberry smoothie, lying back sleepily on a wooden bench. This is Lore (18) from Beveren, who’s just crawled out of her tent and made it as far as the Garden of Eden, an ivy-veiled construction on the way from the Mainstage to the Wind Stage. “To be honest, I’ve got quite the hangover,” Lore admits. “But right now, I can feel the vitamins streaming through my veins! Did I add a shot of vodka? Well, maybe later, for my second drink!” At Lidl’s Garden of Eden you can do like Lore and get your daily dose of vitamins from a plentitude of different smoothies. When you’re in need of a small boost of energy, you spice the drink up with a drop of vodka. Are you out of Pearls but in need of healthy things? Drop by between 18:00 and 21:00, when you can get a free apple, handed out by Adam and Eve themselves!
Today marks the moment when the eyes of the world are on the Tomorrowland Mainstage, and you can take that very literally. From cities as far as Incheon, South Korea, Byblos, Lebanon, and Dubai, UAE, to not-so-far-off metropoles like Barcelona, Spain, and Gelsenkirchen, Germany, a live connection with the Tomorrowland Mainstage will be made. The local audience will get the chance to Unite with the visitors on the Holy Grounds of Boom. Synchronised special effects with the show in Belgium, the Tomorrowland setting combined with a massive line-up on the spot: UNITE with Tomorrowland is more than just a livestream for the other cities to follow, it’s a unique show that allows you to share the magic with your fellow People of Tomorrow on the other side of the world. Prepare to connect globally at 21:00 at the Mainstage, alongside your partners in crime KSHMR, Armin van Buuren and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

LOVE TOMORROW Let’s unite and make the Tomorrowland journey even more beautiful! Love Tomorrow not only provides you with the necessary facilities to sort your waste correctly, they also want to bring awareness to the People of Tomorrow: enjoy this journey to the fullest while respecting your surroundings, mother Nature, each other, and yourself. Today, Love Tomorrow’s message is about preventing waste with the Recycle Club and Camp 2 Camp.
THE RECYLE CLUB
Have you discovered the Recycle Clubhouse yet? It really is worth visiting! The lovely hosts will help you sort your waste for recycling and, if you get lucky, reward you for doing so with cool prizes. Upon arriving in DreamVille, you received a stamp card together with your Recycle Kit. Every time you bring a full and correctly sorted PMD bag to the Clubhouse, you receive a stamp on your card. After getting three stamps, you will have a chance to obtain one of the magnificent prizes. These include vouchers for one of the lovely restaurants on the festival site as well as unique accessories, made out of old or damaged Tomorrowland banners and shower curtains. On top of that, the one who has handed in the most full stamp cards during the festival weekend will become Love Tomorrow’s Recycle Club Hero. He or she will become a golden member, earning them a Full Madness DreamVille Package for next year’s edition. For the golden member, it won’t be necessary to bring camping gear, because that will be provided by Camp 2 Camp.
3D PRINT STUDIO
Did you know that….
Don’t believe in trying your luck for prizes? Check out the 3D-print shop next to the Recycle Clubhouse, where Love Tomorrow, Jupiler and Renewi have joined forces. Here you can exchange your full stamp card for a Love Tomorrow amulet. It’s not just a nice gadget to wear; you can also use it as a bottle opener when you’re back home. At the 3D Print Studio you can discover how plastic bottles can be recycled. The bottles are converted into 3D-printing material. This can then be used to print any item; even furniture could be made this way! Come have a look, and see how the plastic is shredded and then printed into beautiful Love Tomorrow amulets. Together we go for zero waste!
The amount of correctly sorted PMD (Plastic bottles, Metal cans and Drink cartons) at DreamVille last year was eleven times higher than the year before. Let’s do even better this year!
CAMP 2 CAMP After last year’s edition of Tomorrowland, Love Tomorrow and Re-use shop Ecoso worked together for the first time to collect the camping gear left behind on DreamVille. All the gear that was collected was cleaned up and sold at Ecoso. After a few days, the tents were already sold out! A big success, especially since all the proceeds go towards the creation of social employment at the Re-use shop. This year, the People of Tomorrow are encouraged to hand in any camping gear they can’t take home at the Re-Use Drop-Off Points at the District Houses. These will be opened on Sunday and Monday. By handing in your gear, the stuff you would amicorum spectaculum have left behind will not get wasted, but find a new destination – and help people who have difficulties finding a job in the process.
These are yesterday’s winners: Jens Neuber, Daniel Thabow, Timo Ehlmann, Mornie Bremen Nielsen, Virdai Rezewski, Jolan Johnson, Amelie Kriner, Els Queeckers, Flores Soto Mijail, Andes Torres, Nick Spriet, Sunischal Dev, Maxi Hammerschmidt, Abhash Bhattacharga, Notterdaeme, Louis Ampe, Ruben de Bruyne, Andre Gyger, Avinash Nayak, Xavier debelgium Almeida
If your name is on the list, make sure to drop by the Recycle Clubhouse to discover and collect your prize!

ORGAN OF HARMONY
Tomorrowland is all about crossing borders, whether it be music, food or any other recipe for happiness. Today, there’s some boundary-pushing to be done by legit tech-guys - as in ‘technology’ (ok, and ‘techno’ as well). Richie Hawtin will host the PLAYdifferently stage featuring a whole new mixing console: the Model1. Going loco on the PLAYdifferently’s knobs this Incredible Saturday are Tale of Us, Loco Dice, Chris Liebing, and a host of other techno Jedis that have moved towards the dark side. If you’re up for some hypnotic voodoo rhythms to help you dance down the devil’s road, this is where amicorum spectaculum they’ll happily steal your soul.
There’s a thing you need to know about the Belgians: we’re pretty proud of our own kind. And all subjectivity and jibber-jabber aside, we’re right to be. One of Belgium’s main young talents is Felix De Laet aka Lost Frequencies, and he’ll be hosting the Organ of Harmony today inviting some of his friends, influences and legit heroes. One of his heroes is big beat legend Fatboy Slim, the man who taught the rockers how to dance and vice versa. But there’s plenty of other musical gems to be found today, too, from Duke Dumont and a liveset by Curtis Alto to Lost Frequencies’ ‘brother from a Walloon mother’, Henri PFR.

AXTONE FREEDOM BY BUDWEISER
One of the most beautiful new additions to Tomorrowland is the Freedom stage, or ‘second mainstage’ as the People of Tomorrow sometimes like to call it. Axtone – a Swedish label founded by the one and only Axwell – will host the Freedom stage today with all the flavours big room house has to offer. Starting out as a channel for Axwell to release his own work, Axtone grew into one of the biggest labels around, and it’s now giving its founder the opportunity to host one of the biggest stages of Tomorrowland. Prepare for the rhythmic sounds of the British D.O.D, Russian duo M.E.G & N.E.R.A.K, Mr. Axwell himself, and many, many more.

JORIS VOORN FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY MAINSTAGE | 12h00 - 15h00 Perhaps it’s his background as an architect, perhaps it’s just his nature and experience – but if there is one thing that Joris Voorn emanates, it’s well-composedness. Over twenty years in the game as a DJ, Voorn rose to underground fame with skillfully layered mixtapes, and a slew of well-received original productions. This year at Tomorrowland, he’ll be bringing the underground to the Mainstage in his Daybreak Session. High time, then, for a conversation with Joris about music, art, and the future. Joris – the crowd at your Daybreak Session will be rather different from what you’re used to in underground clubs. How will you approach your set? “Actually, I’m going in without too much preparation. I have an enormous library of music, I’ll just see what works and what direction the day takes me. I trust in the crowd’s open-mindedness, and though it won’t be as deep as a club set during those dark winter months, it’ll be a fun experiment. I’m curious to see if the crowd that normally goes to the more ‘underground’ stages will turn up, too. And then I hope there’s sunshine – that’s one thing I can only hope for, haha!” How did you start out as a DJ – did you ‘grow up’ as a part of the clubbing scene or did you become a performer right away? amicorumstarted spectaculum “Everything in the town of Enschede, where I was studying at the time. It was 1996. I had visited a small local club a couple of times and I quickly managed to land
a DJ gig. Then, with some luck, bookings started flowing in pretty quickly. I think you could count the number of events that I went to as a regular visitor on two hands. Soon, I had the privilege of being backstage for pretty much anything I would want to see. But I do know the ‘dancefloor’ side of the story – 10 or so years ago, I would often stay, party ‘till the end of the night after playing. But now, on weekdays, I have to get up at quarter past 7 to take the kids to school. So it’s quite alright not to stay up all night.” Speaking of growing up: over the past years house, techno, and EDM have become so popular it’s hard to put into words. How do you see this music evolving in the future, in terms of popularity as well as artistry? “You see, in the ‘90s, rock and other guitar-driven music were extremely popular. Slowly, throughout the noughties, that emphasis shifted to dance music. Actually, I think high-energy EDM fulfills the same role as Linkin Park and Greenday did back then: people just want to throw all of their energy in there. It’s very different from the sort of groove that I try to build. EDM is very popular right now, but that can change easily and such things are hard to predict. What makes electronic music interesting from a producer’s perspective is that it is very DIY; you can make pretty much anything with just your little laptop. So just because of that I think whatever the future holds, electronic music will have a large part to play in it. Furthermore, house, techno and EDM are based on the four-to-the-floor beat, which I believe is the most basic rhythm in existence. You can attach whatever you want to it, you can take it
29
slow, you can make it very fast, whatever; it’s always very energetic, the most attractive form of dance music. Artistically, I am all for people pushing boundaries and exploring limits. That doesn’t mean that I feel a connection with everything that’s being done, but it’s great that people are doing it. Again, I strongly believe in the 4/4 rhythm, it almost seems to be part of our DNA. This kind of beat began in the seventies with disco music. And now disco is very popular again! So you see, you don’t always need artistic novelty for people to have a good time, but experimentation is very important. As for myself, I’m not a purist, I don’t think you should approach dance music too intellectually – but I know others do. James Holden, for instance, in his handful of hits from the ‘00s, was pushing boundaries and doing everything that could be done within the confines of dance. He was one of the last great innovators. Afterwards, he went further down his own road, and I can’t really identify with that music anymore. So you have all these things going on, and let me be clear: it’s fantastic that there are still DJs that play very good music, whether it’s 40 years old or completely new and novel. Ultimately, the first place where music should touch people is the heart, not the brain.” Curious about Joris’ curator’s mind, his wide sonic Spectrum, and the way he strings all those interests together? Get up early and catch him at the Mainstage at noon! belgium

“It’s like gold dust, you see me mashin’ up your air waves / I know you can’t get enough of my sound!” Just remember the drop after these infamous lines and you know who Flux Pavilion is: one of the godfathers of contemporary dubstep, with his club banger ‘Gold Dust’. Joshua Steele, alias Flux, has been a key figure in the late ‘00s UK dubstep wave, bringing this underground genre to a more mainstream audience. He is one of the founders of the legendary Circus Records, which includes producers like Doctor P and Cookie Monsta. Inspired by The Prodigy and Rusko, Flux creates a heavy bass variant of dubstep, with a lot of samples and melodies, as can be heard in hits like ‘I Can’t Stop’ and ‘Cracks’. Recently Steele has been making a comeback with new hits like ‘Do Or Die’ with Childish Gambino, and this year’s ‘Pull the Trigger’ with Cammie Robinson. Flux Pavillion’s music is not for the faint of heart: heavy dubstep drops smash through your body and leave you trembling in slow motion. This Saturday Steele is representing Yellow Claw’s Barong Family at the House of Books, amicorumother spectaculum alongside bass-heavy legends like Mightyfools and Excision. Although Felix de Laet will spend his summer touring together with international legends The Chainsmokers, Tomorrowland is still the apex of the year for him. Felix is an unusual success story. In 2014 he suddenly received more than 150 million streams of his summer hit ‘Are You With Me’, which made him the most-played Belgian artist in the history of Spotify. Ever since then De Laet has been playing on festivals all over the world. But this year, he will surpass even that milestone with his very own hosting at Tomorrowland. Equipped with a new pair of glasses and a fresh haircut, he’s confident this’ll be a home match.
The KSHMR project is only three years old, but the man is coming up into the uppermost echelons of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs in the world. He debuted on position 23 and rose eleven positions last year. With productions like ‘Secret’, ‘Karate’, and ‘Wildcard’, his music is made to conquer the #1 spots of music charts all over the world. It’s been just a short career, but KSHMR has already enriched the scene with a lot of new sounds. He just launched a sublabel to Spinnin’ Records belgium called Dharma Worldwide and will never get tired of looking outside the box. Check out his sound at the Mainstage, 20:55!
And a little tip from us: you should put in a little effort. If you are very nice and we see you shaking your booty as if the survival of the world depended on it, we might just hand out some gifts. Gifts that will make us recognize you all day long. And if we recognize you we might just send you some special kisses from the stage. Yesterday the extravagant DJ duo Bart & Bakker joined in from Paris - from a fairytale city to a fairytale festival - and take it from us: those dandy DJs brought some of the best electroswing and craziest mash-ups ever! Dressed in suits and wearing top hats, they’re exactly the kind of gentlemen we like. Suit up! As for today, we can’t wait to have our one and only Rebelle on stage at 6 p.m. This beauty will bring some old school Chicago house classics that’ll make your heart go boom. No doubt our guest dancers will vogue with her until the stars come falling down. See you today Darlings, we’ll be waiting for you! xxx
