Tomorrowland WEEKEND EDITION
P E O P L E O F T O M O R ROW,
YOU WROTE THE WISEST STORY YET!
How does it feel, now? To know that it was you, unequivocally and irreducibly you, who took up the pen and furthered the tale of Tomorrow into territories previously unknown? The Return of the Book of Wisdom brought forth the canvas upon which your stories could unfold. Referring to the memoirs of marvels sprouting from previous chapters, the last one was yet to be written by yourselves, friends. You dipped your feathers in an inkwell of love, friendship, mystery, magic and music, and incited the beginning of your narrative. You acquired wisdom
A TALE TO REMEMBER
Tomorrowland’s Book of Wisdom – The Return, the world’s finest celebration of electronic dance music, has now been closed. You’ve witnessed the very best in EDM, big room, techno, house, hardstyle and more. This year’s anniversary edition has had its classic moments, which will be different for everyone - though one thing that was certainly classical was the Symphony of Unity. Keep on singing as you take these tales home!
up and down the vortex of history, seized the joy of the here and now and went on to write the first letters of the future onto the pages of your souls. As these days of excited celebrations are coming to an end, and the final pages are in sight, it is time to thank you for your relentless effort, for this journey through the depths of your imagination. The end is nigh, but it’s a happy one. Just so, you may round off. Scribble down that final period and rest – the ink has nearly dried, and the back cover is about to turn. This, friends, was definitely one for the books. Wonderful Wayfarers,
NEW STORIES AWAIT!
THANKS FOR READING
People of Tomorrow, thank you all for your continued support, enthusiasm, dedication and passion. There wouldn’t be a newspaper without your cheery contributions. Safe travels!
Although this is where your weekend will end, please cherish the memories you’ve made here. As the Book of Wisdom closes, another chapter of your life will open. Make it a good one.

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN
TOMORROWLAND TODAY
BELGIUM 2019
A BEAMING FUTURE
ver there, in the corner of my eye - what’s that? What’s that glimpse of light beaming into my pupils? It blocks out half of my vision as I look out over the shelves filled with tales of futuristic endeavours, visions of today and stories of days gone by. I’m drawn into the light like a moth, unable to resist, mesmerized by that shiny object luring me in. What sorcery is this?
As I move in closer, I pinch my eyes, trying to get accustomed to such powerful rays of light. Finally, mere metres away, my mind is able to piece together what I’m looking at: a book, but unlike any book I’ve ever seen. It’s bigger, taller and thicker than usual. It’s just lying there, on the floor, as though it’s the most natural thing in the world. But I’m sure that it wasn’t there just ten minutes ago. My head starts spinning, thoughts racing through my cranium as I reach to pick it up.
At last, the overwhelming brightness dims, and I decipher the curly, shiny golden letters on the front cover: ‘The Book of Wisdom’, it reads. I open it up at random, somewhere halfway, and land on a page marked ‘2019’. It appears to be the beginning of a subdivision of the tome, going by the subtitle: ‘The Return’. I dive right in, and I’m immersed in a world of myths and legends promising a future of love and togetherness for all. Moving on, I end up on an empty page, but wait… A few letters materialise on the parchment, then more, forming up into paragraphs. “What’s that over there, in the corner of my eye?”

As you embark on your journey homewards, sunshine and memories will warm your heart. The Book of Wisdom is closed for now, but rays of sunlight will follow you on your way home. So long!

THIS WAS THE GATHERING So much has happened since, but surely you remember first pitching your tent when you arrived on that hot Thursday. From there, it was a quick bite and a cheeky little drink before you headed to The Gathering. The sheer energy of the stage was incredible. With the very best of the insanely strong Belgian electronic scene on the line-up, and a fresh crowd ready to party, The Gathering provided the perfect way to get Tomorrowland 2019 started properly.

Big smiles this morning, as some people sang ‘halleluja!’, but none of them in church. It was just the final, beautiful day of the Book of Wisdom that they were thankful for. Every page was read with lots of energy and a touch of nostalgia, as you knew today was the last day of a beautiful weekend where your dancing feet moved like never before. Highlights? THIS WAS TOMORROWLAND
Fifteen magical years of Tomorrowland have passed, and what a journey it has been. What started out as an experiment that hardly anyone really understood – an outdoor dance festival with over-the-top stages, in broad daylight, really?! – grew out to become this fantastic event we all love so much. Together with the stages and the DJs, the festival itself kept on developing as well. But what exactly are the key ingredients needed to make up this marvellous Tomorrowland recipe – one that has been kept fresh and improved upon year after year? We took a ride through the history of the festival, the legend of it all, the famous Mainstage and some key moments with a panel of some of those who were there from the very beginning: Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Dimitri Vegas, M.I.K.E. Push, Yves Deruyter, Coone, Yves V and MC Stretch. 23

Yves Deruyter 2014
The Early Days One of the very few acts to have been involved from the early days are Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, even though the Mainstage wasn’t quite something they could imagine playing back then: “I’ve been a part of Tomorrowland from its second or third year,” Dimitri explains. “During those first years I worked as a backline technician and helped the likes of David Guetta and John Dahlbäck with their stage setups. Needless to say, I seized the opportunity to slip some of our early demos into their DJ bags (laughs). In 2009, we played our very first show at The Gathering and we closed the Flugel stage that same year.”
According to legend, Belgium’s very own Yves Deruyter was one of those who did get lucky enough to play the very first edition. “To be honest, I can’t remember all that much of those days,” Yves says laughingly. “I can’t even remember what I did last week! But in general, it’s a good thing when I don’t recall an event, because that means that nothing went wrong. Back then, Tomorrowland was still just another festival, you know, one of many who were trying to make it big – though none of the others succeeded at constantly staying on edge, constantly improving. The Mainstage back then was nothing more than a couple of curtains and the ID&T logo spread out over it.” Coone recalls it differently: “To me, that ‘small’

“I’ve been here since day one, and it already seemed big to me back then” (Coone)
Mainstage already felt pretty big back then (laughs). I haven’t missed a single edition since the first one, so to me it went from ‘already pretty big’ to huge!” Closing the Mainstage in year zero, 2005, was M.I.K.E. Push: “I remember being invited to headline a new festival by the organization behind Antwerp Is Burning. They told me that it would be a new outdoor dance event called Tomorrowland, and that I could close out the day. I even remember ending my set with my track ‘Strange World’ and a very minimal setup of lights and fireworks (laughs). Looking back, the journey we’ve all been on together is amazing. You know, there were big outdoor dance parties back then in the rest of Europe, and especially in Australia, but there simply wasn’t anything like this. Tomorrowland immediately took it to the next level, the magnitude of it was awe-inspiring.” One year on and the festival had grown, at least a little bit. In 2006, it was none other than our very own Yves V behind the decks, alongside the likes of Armin van Buuren, Marco Bailey and David Guetta: “I played the Mainstage that year,” he explains, “and I remember that my girlfriend was allowed to sit next to me on stage. Things were a bit more jovial back in the day. There were a lot of people from Antwerp there as well, and as I was mostly playing local club shows at the time, it’s fair to say that I knew literally everyone on the front rows. But even then, you could feel that something special was happening. There were hardly other festivals that operated at that level, even then.” “I remember my first time pretty clearly,” says MC Stretch, who has been hosting the Mainstage for years now. “It was a one-day thing. I think it was the third edition, and I was here for the second day only. I was hosting a trance tent, it was either Armin or Above & Beyond who curated the lineup. It was terrible weather. I remember walking backstage, before Tomorrowland constructed proper roads at De Schorre, and I was literally knee deep in the mud. But when I went to look at the terrain in front of the stage I didn’t see any mud at all. And I was like: wow, they’ve somehow managed to work something out to have the people feel comfortable even though the weather conditions are working against them. And I’ve been walking around going ‘wow’, ‘wow’ and ‘wow’ ever since.” Armin van Buuren’s own memories also go back to those days: “I first got a stage in one of the smaller areas, and that was pretty impressive already. Knowing what Tomorrowland has
become today makes it even more special to have been there during the early days. The festival was so much smaller, it used to be the little brother of Mysteryland in the Netherlands, so those first times were one big adventure. I knew the organisation from back when I played at Antwerp Is Burning in the Sportpaleis, so it’s really nice to see it now, realising where they came from.” Tomorrowland welcomed a lot of huge talents from early on, but it wasn’t until 2008 that they had the pleasure to welcome the Three-Decked-Wizard: Mr. Carl Cox. “My first time at Tomorrowland, I was playing the Mainstage in a slot between Dr. Lektroluv and David Guetta, and the production at the time was nowhere near as massive as today. But even back in the day, you could sense that Tomorrowland was out of the box. In those early days there was already something special about it that went above and beyond any other festival.” Tiësto’s first encounter with Tomorrowland wasn’t, as one might be inclined to think, at the Mainstage. “The first time I played here it was still daylight,” he recalls, “I can’t remember the stage name, but I do remember that there were only about 200 people in front of me. It was very hot and very dusty, but a pleasant experience nevertheless. You know, as a DJ you sometimes miss out on what is happening in front of you. You come in through the back door, climb on stage, play your set and leave again – the Tomorrowland feeling you have on the dance floor is a whole different thing. I would love to visit Tomorrowland sometime as a member of the audience, as a fan, come into through the front gates and undergo that magical journey people always talk about. In order to do that, I think I’d have to wear a fake moustache, though, or better: my marshmallow hat (laughs)!”
The Mainstage Let’s be honest: amidst all that prominent worldwide DJ talent, there’s really only one headliner that stands out, isn’t there? The one recurring big name on the line-up that fans of every genre, every visitor, everybody is looking forward to see is the Mainstage. Back in 2005 it may have been just a big podium, but that changed rather quickly as it became bigger, bolder, more extravagant and utterly mind-blowing, a story in and of itself. It became so grand that even the greatest of the world still have the shakes before they step up
25

BELGIUM 2019
THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN
behind those golden decks. DJ Tiësto was one of the first DJs in the world to sell out an arena show all by himself, yet the Mainstage is a whole different level even to him. Tiësto: “The funny thing is that my own arena shows in Belgium back then were organized by the same people behind Tomorrowland today. But that stage is a completely different thing: here, you’re not only standing in front of Tiësto fans, you’re playing in front of fans of all the other DJs as well, and they’re from all around the world. Playing the Mainstage is one of the most highprofile DJ gigs in the world, and I’m still very honoured to be able to do so, because it means that they still think I have what it takes to play in the top league.”
“My first time at Tomorrowland, I was doing the backline for John Dahlbäck” (Dimitri Vegas)
The first one to have brought techno to big stages around the world was Carl Cox, and he has done so at Tomorrowland as well. “You know, for me, it wasn’t really about bringing techno to that famous Mainstage of Tomorrowland, as I’d done that kind of show many times already. I do think they were very smart in programming a style of music on the Mainstage that has an element of commerciality to it, but that music - it comes from somewhere, it comes from me. And now we have Amelie Lens and Charlotte de Witte there, people who are starting to make techno at the Mainstage a normal thing. People have become more educated in music, and it’s great that it can be accepted in this here scenery - even in broad daylight!” Another not-so-mainstream genre at the Mainstage is hardstyle, and the one to bring it is quite a few years younger than Carl Cox and goes by the name of Coone: “That was such a big moment for me, and for hardstyle in general. The beauty of Tomorrowland is that they provide opportunities for all those genres, including hardstyle, and I’m ever so grateful for that.” The Tomorrowland Mainstage and MC Stretch go together like Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike: their past, present and future are indissolubly intertwined. Stretch is the host and the voice of the Mainstage, the one to welcome you in the morning, keep you on your toes during the day, and send you off with a little goodnight 26
TOMORROWLAND TODAY
kiss after the last blasts of fireworks have quieted down. That doesn’t mean that he’d ever take the Mainstage for granted, though: “I’m still amazed every year. Take the new Book of Wisdom; the level of detail is beyond this world. Did you know that those are all real books on the shelves behind the booth? Thousands of them! And then there’s the opening ceremony: seeing the stage come to life is such an epic moment, there’s no way I’ll ever grow tired of that.” For Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, 2010 marks the first time they ever played the Mainstage. They’re rocking it for the tenth time this year, so for them, this fifteenth edition is one celebration on top of another. “You bet we’ll be celebrating that with a bang,” he assures us. “What makes the Mainstage so grand is the production: no other festival comes anywhere close to what Tomorrowland brings year after year. They try to reinvent themselves every time again in terms of theme, design, production... The whole thing is constantly renewed.” Belgium’s very own electronic music innovator, Yves Deruyter, has been putting out records since 1991, but had to wait just a little bit longer to make his first appearance on that one stage to rule them all. “I played the Mainstage last year for the very first time, together with DJ Ghost, as Cherrymoon Trax. Even though I’ve been around for quite a while now, and I’ve seen pretty much everything there is to see in Belgium, that was something really special. You’re playing the Mainstage of what is officially the best festival in the world – all eyes are on you. And what’s more fun is that people still talk about that set. We managed to stand out last year – people from outside Belgium and the Netherlands probably thought that we were bringing a completely new style of music, because they’d never heard of us old guys (laughs). For me, personally, playing that Mainstage was one of the very few things left on my bucket list, and I’m humbled and honoured to have been able to do it.” According to Armin van Buuren, next to having a starspangled line-up, it’s the surroundings that do the trick:

“The Mainstage being where it is, at the bottom of the valley, is what makes the atmosphere extra special. It’s like a big natural outdoor arena. You can actually see the people in the back and for me, that makes me feel more in touch with everybody, not just the first rows. De Schorre is just such a unique location, even without considering the stages that get crazier every year.”
The Legend It’s been fifteen years since De Schorre was originally taken over by an army of thousands of dance fanatics, and that crowd has been steadily growing in numbers ever since. In terms of overall international reputation and prestige, however, the growth was exponential. Dimitri Vegas: “When we were still aspiring young DJs, it was already pretty clear that Tomorrowland was on its way to become a legend in Belgium. The second time we played the Mainstage, the festival was sold out and had started to go international, with visitors from all over the world. The aftermovie of 2012 went viral, and I think that year and the next were turning points for the festival. It’s fair to say that the worldwide explosion of popular electronic music and the boom of Tomorrowland were basically synchronized.” Yves V concurs on the importance of the aftermovie, and recalls the moment he realized just how big Tomorrowland was becoming very clearly: “Years ago, one of my friends who works for Tomorrowland was on a holiday in Mexico. When he spoke to people there, they had never heard of Belgium, but knew all about Tomorrowland.” But where does the legend come from? For Carl Cox, that’s easy to answer: “Above all, it’s the camaraderie that made this festival become what it is today. The People of Tomorrow feel like this is their world, they come to meet their friends and make new friends. In that way, it’s kind of close to an event like Burning Man, where people go because for that one moment in their life, they can call it their home. I think people feel at home here as well, or at least during that one weekend. And the organisation does all they can to make you feel like that, it’s as much a fairytale as a it is social and musical event.” Yves Deruyter goes on: “I’ve been asked what makes Tomorrowland so special before, and the answer’s very simple: it’s the best festival in the world. Throughout the years they kept on improving the production, the whole setting and the line-up. They’ve managed to keep on growing year after year, every edition is like a final, and they won every single one of them.” In M.I.K.E. Push’s opinion, it’s the variety of musical styles that helped the festival rise above all others. “Us artists grew, in a rock ’n roll kind of way, along with the festival. They’ve always managed to keep a place on the line-up for us, the creators of the sound. There’s new and edgy next to classic and retro. While us DJs also kept improving ourselves in the club circuit, what Tomorrowland did was bring the concept of a festival to a whole new standing. They’ve managed to make playing outdoors to be a magical experience for both artist and audience.”
The DJs “In a way, Tomorrowland is like the New Year’s Eve party of the electronic music scene,” Dimitri Vegas says about the DJ’s experience of the weekend. “There’s all kinds of musical styles to choose from. For us, personally, we’ve had some great moments doing b2b sets with Martin Garrix, Hardwell, Steve Aoki and Afrojack. That time we played Laidback Luke’s Super You & Me stage and dressed up like superheroes was also one for the books. The atmosphere amongst the

artists is just so easy-going, we have the opportunity to get in contact with each other, whereas at other festivals the experience is more solitary, like you’re in your own little cocoon.” M.I.K.E. Push agrees: “It’s a gathering of artists. We often miss out on each other during the rest of the year, but we can rest assured, because we’ll definitely be able to meet up at Tomorrowland.” MC Stretch: “I can only speak for myself, of course, but music is music. People can put it in whatever genres they want to. That’s why the Mainstage of Tomorrowland is so important: it showcases all those different styles and people. There’s techno, house, EDM and hardstyle following up on each other, and those DJs get the opportunity to see each other at work and talk and get to know one another. Introducing the Daybreak Sessions was the greatest move in festival history, by the way: to allow DJs to come and play for three hours, genius. Next to that, some artists get their own areas on other days, and it all contributes to the DJs being one big family here. And me, myself, I feel like Uncle Stretch (laughs). If you’ve got any problems, come speak to me, maybe I can help you out. You know, I’m the host of the Mainstage, and I think that role is equally important both on stage and off stage. When a young DJ comes up and is nervous about playing for the first time, it’s my job to put them at ease and tell them that if they’ve made it here, they’ve absolutely earned it. I just said that to Hugel yesterday and he was like, ‘thank you, but I’m still pretty darn nervous!’ (laughs).” Tiësto gives props to the festival for creating an environment wherein it’s so easy to get in touch with each other: “Tomorrowland has always had one of the best backstage experiences in the world. You feel special right away. Take the food, for instance: the backstage food is cooked by none other than Nick Bril, the chef from two-Michelin-star restaurant The Jane in Antwerp – that’s world-class! Next to that, you meet all those
other DJs, often playing other styles than yourself, and everybody’s friendly. There’s respect and love for each other; having techno, house, EDM and trance DJs all happily and respectfully mingling, that’s a very special thing. The younger DJs also come up to me to ask for advice and I’m always happy to help. They call me the godfather or the mentor sometimes (laughs). It’s hard to say what the ‘overall best advice’ is, because every DJ is different. Some of them need guidance on a more personal level while others profit more from musical pointers. But that’s the beauty of it, of course.” Armin van Buuren agrees that at Tomorrowland, DJs of all kinds of pedigrees stand next to each other with the utmost respect. “It helps that the accommodations are so top-notch, because you feel at home. When you’re feeling comfortable, it’s easier to get in touch with one another. But when younger DJs come up to me I still feel a bit weird, because to me it’s still like I’m here for the first time. To me, this is just as much fun now as it was the first time I was on stage; playing at Tomorrowland is still something special, you’ll never get used to it. It’s really uplifting to have younger colleagues come up to you to say how your music inspired them to start their career, though.”
The Memories There have been so many key moments that made Tomorrowland what it is today, and the lion’s share of them were the sort you’d want to frame and display in the pantheon of fondest memories. Others of them, however, were funny, emotional, or even slightly unfortunate. But for Armin, only one moment really stands out: “My special Tomorrowland moment was in 2013, when I had to fly here straight from Rotterdam to be able to make it in time. When I started my set, the skies covered over and the most horrible thunderstorm came pouring in. It was as if God was crying - of happiness, though, because 29

my son was born earlier that day. The feeling of becoming a father to a healthy little boy is just indescribable, and what better moment to share it than here, with the People of Tomorrow?” Dimitri Vegas has some warm memories of that same year, but for slightly different reasons: “The craziest thing we ever saw here was Swedish House Mafia’s set in 2013. That unique atmosphere, the vibe, it was the first time the Mainstage had that super-impressive total concept. We’re all spoiled nowadays, but it took some time to get here. For me, 2013 was the first time I could really put my finger on what became that true Tomorrowland feeling, the feeling that makes people from hundreds of different places make the journey to Boom.”
“The Mainstage is a whole different thing, you’re not only playing for your own fans, but for ever yone” (Tiësto)
Coone remembers one time in particular, a moment he still cheriches: “Tiësto closed the Mainstage with one of my tracks. It blew my mind. Determined to thank him, I snuck into the backstage area behind the Mainstage – I actually didn’t have the right bracelet to be there – and was able to thank him personally. That was a pretty rock ’n roll moment, haha!” For M.I.K.E. Push there’s one edition, 2009 to be precise, that immediately comes to mind: “It was hot, the sun was scorching, we were pretty much gasping for air. So what did I do? I went to get my BMW on the parking lot and drove it all the way back to the festival site. I parked it right behind the Mainstage and cranked the air conditioning all the way up. Result: all the DJs that day dropped by and came sit with me in my car (laughs). Gareth Emery and Markus Schulz still bring up that moment every time we meet. It’s hard to imagine doing something like that today, but back then, you could still get away with some mischief.” Yves V: “The first year I played here, I was on the Mainstage and I was still DJing with vinyl. The wind was so strong that my needle skipped time after time. Luckily, the MC took over the moment and I was able to readjust the turntables and solve the problem after a while. Today, it’s hard to imagine something like that happening, and it would be my biggest nightmare. But back then, in that laid-back atmosphere, it was a funny moment and a great anecdote.” For MC Stretch the moment that sticks out is also a rather unfortunate one – it’s easier to remember the exceptions that confirm the rule, after all. “I think the sound went out only once or twice during all those years,” he muses, “and there was this one time Axwell was playing and the sound just went: boom, gone. After it was fixed I asked the technicians if everything was OK now. ‘Yeah, no problem’, they replied, so I went to grab a bite and walk around a bit on the festival. By the time I got back, there’s Axwell standing there in the backstage, even though he was still supposed to be playing. He told me that the sound had gone out seven times or so, so he went off stage. I went running back to the stage and Dave Lambert was behind the decks and he’s like: ‘where the hell have you been, Stretch!?’ Dave had filled in because Axwell was annoyed by the sound falling out. Luckily Dave was able to turn things around, and he made it an epic set to never forget. On my end, I did my absolute best to make the crowd scream their heads off for Dave, because I felt quite guilty that I had run off (laughs). It was scary, but I’ll never forget about that.” Yves Deruyter may be a DJ and producer with a lot of love for all things retro, but when it comes to reminiscing, he’d rather look towards the future: “Obviously, our set last year on the Mainstage was epic, but I think that my favourite moment will be next weekend. I’ll be on that big podium again for a Daybreak Session on Sunday. It’s a nice, long set wherein I’ll be able to show my past, my present and my future. I’ve started writing new tracks and I’m looking forward to finally showcasing them to such a big audience, with the whole world watching. I’m doing new stuff with a nineties vibe, and together with Adam Beyer and 30 30
TOMORROWLAND TODAY
Thomas Schumacher, I’ve made an amazing remix of ‘The House of House’, so I’ll have plenty of novelties. It will be the launch of Yves Deruyter 2.0, so that’ll be my time to shine!”
The Tracks Of course, the reason we’re all here is not just to see the DJs and the Mainstage, and not only to meet new friends; the red thread is still the music. Everyone has a special place in their heart for the one track that feels like it summarizes all their feelings perfectly – but what track do our beloved DJs think best sums up the history of Tomorrow? Dimitri Vegas: “I would say ‘One (Your Name)’ by Swedish House Mafia. The intro to that record was so cool, to turn a loop into a melody. At the time it was considered a pretty rough club track, especially for the Mafia boys. They were headlining festivals in no time though, and then it became a radio track on top of that. A beautiful moment for electronic music in general, and it pushed the boundaries of what EDM could be as well.” Yves Deruyter agrees on ‘One (Your Name)’ and would add ‘Your Mind’ by Adam Beyer. The choice is tough, though, because his game is so different from the majority of the other artists: “I play a lot of retro tracks and we’re still a bit of an oddball at Tomorrowland. So there’s not really one track that captures the whole feeling for me. But if I had to choose one track that’s more up my own alley, then it would be ‘The House of House’ by Cherrymoon Trax. It works every time.” A little less nostalgic, but still a golden oldie, Carl Cox opts for a track called ‘Access’ by DJ Misjah & DJ Tim: “It goes back fifteen years or even longer, but to me, that’s the ultimate Tomorrowland classic, for sure.” “To me, funnily enough, that would be ‘Warp 1.9’, by The Bloody Beetroots with Steve Aoki,” MC Stretch decides. “That ‘whoop, whoop’ became an instantly recognizable trope, but they did it first. The basic
THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN
BELGIUM 2019
hoover sound of that track is way old, and goes back to long before Steve or The Bloody Beetroots were even around, but the ‘hey ho’s’: that was done here first, at Tomorrowland. It was here, all of that Madness originated here, on these very grounds. The sitdowns, the jumping left and right and the crowd control: here.” Armin van Buuren decides on ‘Spaceman’ by Hardwell, and for reasons well thought through: “I know that back in 2012, you could feel a turning point with the Book of Wisdom. That was such an overwhelming stage, and in those days Hardwell was an upcoming talent, someone who I also supported. Even though he’s obviously not here this year, he deserves a place in the history of Tomorrowland.” Yves V opts for ‘Pjanoo’ by Eric Prydz, because it’s probably the track that has been played most at the festival. M.I.K.E. Push hands the honour to Tiësto’s ‘Adagio for Strings’. “Not only is Tiësto a great friend of mine, it’s also quite simply one of the top 3 best trance tracks ever – next to my own tracks, obviously (laughs).” Tiësto himself, however, passes on the torch to the younger generation and picks ‘Tremor’ by Martin Garrix and Dimi & Mike: “When you play that record, you just know that you’re going to tear the place apart. It’s a timeless record, the track’s five years old or so, but you can play it every year.” Coone, on his end, can’t think of a better track than his very own ‘Into the Madness’. “I wrote that especially for Tomorrowland, trying to sum up the whole feeling.” It is clear that all of these longtime guardians of Tomorrow’s melodies love the Madness dearly, and will be around for many years to come. So what do you say, People of Tomorrow: on to the next fifteen years? We’ll be there if you’ll be there. A big thank you from Tomorrowland Today to Tomorrowland, and all of you beautiful creatures, for making this the most newsworthy event in the world!
