ALPE D’HUEZ FRANCE

PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

ENTER THE WORLD OF WINTER!

At the beginning, companions, you could barely feel it – nothing registered but the slightest tingle. The first crystal to land made only a few arm hairs rise, briefly, or so it seemed. But the seed was planted and it soon got to work. Its tiny shards of ice coursing through your veins, multiplying, vibrating, you became a vessel for the Hymn of the Frozen Lotus; throughout your body, that song resounded, leading you to seek out those who felt the same. Now, we stand together at the cusp of Alpe d’Huez, led by the call of the Hymn, about to witness the work it has done.

ECHOES OF

THE HYMN The Hymn of the Frozen Lotus may be a truly singular song, but during the days to come, you will hear it reverberate all across the mountains. Henri PFR’s house sounds on Wednesday, Sub Zero Project’s hardstyle Orangerie closing set on Friday, and many established figures such as Armin, Kölsch, DJ Snake, Netsky, Claptone and Paul Kalkbrenner will make you feel it: every single note of music you hear – and sing along to – is an echo, a reflection of the Hymn, and together, they will make a symphony to remember forever.

And behold: a bright blue dome stretching across a stark white landscape, dotted with plants, creatures and places frozen over with the life-giving ice of the Lotus. For now, friends, they remain tiny dots on the horizon, but the time is nigh for you to breathe your own energy into them. Go forth, roam free among the mountains, explore all there is to see; and you will notice that by your hands, everything you touch will be imbibed with the Hymn’s glimmering, crystalline essence of Winter. All that’s left for you to do is freeze the memories in your mind…

WINTRY WANDERERS,

TAKE CARE!

Enchanting as these mountains may be, they are a wild and dangerous place. Look out for each other, make sure your friends are warmly dressed, and escort each other home at night – so you can enjoy again tomorrow! RIDERS ON THE SLOPES,

SUIT UP!

Put on your most marvelous winter outfit and represent your country on the slopes with your flag on Thursday, March 14. The most inspiring “Tomorrowland” outfit wins a chance to go to Tomorrowland Belgium in July 2019! 1

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

2019

ENTER THE LANDS OF THE LOTUS It is with no small pleasure that you are welcomed, People of Tomorrow, into the fold of the Frozen Lotus. Here, in the kingdom whence the Hymn emanates, you have come together; come from all across the globe, from lands as far as Thailand and Colombia, China and Brazil. Wherever you call home, your safe arrival is a blessing.

airplane, or even Amare, Tomorrowland’s very own steel-winged bird, which came down for a special party flight from Brussels. Some visitors, on the contrary, are never far away from Tomorrowland: a number of neighbours from the Belgian Holy Grounds have come down to Alpe d’Huez, and there is a family present at Tomorrowland Winter who have been celebrating their yearly skiing holiday at Alpe d’Huez for years.

For some, the journey was long: there is one among us, for instance, who was present at the first Tomorrowland edition in Belgium, 2005, and has not missed a chapter since – including those in the USA and Brazil. Others may arrive today for the first time, but have undertaken long travels by bus, train, car,

Of course, visitors are not the only ones coming down (or is that up?) to the lovely frozen pastures of the Alps this week. You will also encounter the cream of the crop of Belgian chefs – staples of Tomorrowland Belgium such as Balls ‘n Glory, as well as a special team of cooks who will create an island of summer within

Shameless Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano

All in all, whether your journey was long, short, whether you’re pro skier or diehard raver, musician or chef, there is one thing that binds you all – us all – together: we are about to live the Prophecy of the Frozen Lotus. Therein, it was foretold that wherever we come from and whoever we are, we will all unite as one in these enchanted lands. Now then, People of Tomorrow, shall we get started?

0% BATTERY? 0% STRESS!

The People of Tomorrow are a very mobile and connected bunch. To maintain this connection throughout your time in the mountains, the Tomorrowland Winter Battery Service is available in the official TML by Tomorrowland Boutique. This service provides beautifully designed, swappable battery packs that will help you find your friends if you’re out of juice. Recharge your phone while you get busy enjoying the amazing views, dance to your heart’s content, or just get everyone a drink. If your battery pack runs dry, no problem; you can swap it for a fully charged device at one of the locations below. • • •

LOVE, Chantebise (10h-16h – swap only) Amicorum Spectaculum, Folie Douce (14h-18h – swap only) Official TML by Tomorrowland Boutique

Start-up of the service is only 12 Pearls in the Official TML by Tomorrowland Boutique (marked with a T-shirt icon on your floorplan) and swapping is free. If you return your battery pack at the end of the week, you will receive back your deposit of 7 Pearls. Of course, you can also choose to keep it as a souvenir to take home after the festival!

LET’S GO LIVE!

Cameras rolling, get ready, let’s go live! For all who couldn’t travel to the magical French Alps, and for those who’d rather see snow than feel cold, Tomorrowland Winter will host a livestream. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 17:00 22:00 CET, have your friends back home tune in to live.tomorrowland. com to see what’s happening on the Mainstage of Tomorrowland Winter. While you’re out there making the magic happen, they can pour themselves a cup of hot chocolate and get the party started, too.

MAKE IT APP’N Log onto the WiFi at your lodgings and download the Tomorrowland App, if you haven’t already. It’s the perfect companion to tell you all about when to be where, and it will notify you of the latest news and updates. But that’s not all! If you turn on location settings in the application, you’ll be able to get to your favourite stages fast with the interactive map, and you’ll get to keep tabs on your friends with the ‘Friend Finder’ feature. Now even the fastest and the newest on the slopes can keep an eye on each other. Race you to the Moose Bar!

MR. BIGFOOT

Did you hear the rumour? Was it Yeti, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman? The mega snowman spotted on the slopes is none other than Afrojack, everyone’s favourite friendly giant! And he’s taken one very lucky fan for a private snowboard session. Romain Prouteau was the winner of the One World Radio contest that rewarded him and his girlfriemd Victoria with an exclusive experience of Tomorrowland Winter. They were treated to hotel and meals, ski passes, entrance to the festival and a private powder sesh with Mr. Afrojack himself. Sighted the three on the slopes? No need to call it in, just wave and smile!

GREAT RESPONSIBILITY

You are the pioneers; you’re the first to experience this brand new story during the most magical season of the year, the trailblazers to set foot at Tomorrowland Winter. However, with big adventures comes great responsibility. The mountains are a magical place, but also a wild one. That’s why the adventurous spirits roaming them must take good care of each other. Stay warm, keep an eye on each other and make sure everyone gets home safe. Have a friend who’s a little tuckered out after a full day of skiing and dancing? Don’t let them go back to the hotel alone, and preferably drop them off inside so you’re certain they’re warm and comfortable. Let’s make this story a magical one. 7

PARTY STARTING ON THE SLOPES THE INTERNATIONAL VIBE IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS TOMORROWLAND IS KNOWN FOR. RAVERS CARRY FLAGS FROM ALMOST EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, AND YOU’LL HEAR TONGUES YOU’VE NEVER EVEN HEARD BEFORE. WE WENT ROAMING DOWN THE SLOPES TRYING TO KEEP OURSELVES AND OTHERS SAFE AND SPOKE TO A BUNCH OF EARLY-BIRD PARTY-STARTERS WHO WERE GETTING ON DOWN AS WELL. WHAT DO PEOPLE OF TOMORROW FROM AROUND THE GLOBE LOOK FORWARD TO MOST, HOW DO THEY FIGURE OUT HOW TO DECORATE THEMSELVES, AND WHAT’S UP WITH THEIR SNOWBOARDING SKILLS?

Teiha, Nick, Scott and Mike from England “The atmosphere is growing every day, you can really feel it. We’re seeing more of Tomorrowland’s branding and decor the more we ski around.”

Sandrine, Christopher, Marie-Amelie, Amandine and Ludo from France “We’re a family and we enjoy the adventure even more when we dress up like animals.”

Felix from Germany and Kelvin from Hong Kong “We met in our refuge just after we arrived yesterday morning and decided to have a beer together. That’s when our love story started.”

Nina from Russia “I’m here for seven days and can’t wait to see Martin Garrix on Friday.”

Quentin from France “I’ve been to Tomorrowland three times before and I’m especially looking forward to the sets by Armin van Buuren and Da Tweekaz. I’m a big fan of Da Tweekaz as their music has that typical hardstyle party feeling that makes you want to jump.”

Kashish from the US “I went to Tomorrowland in Belgium last summer for the very first time, after watching the aftermovies for the past ten years or so. It really changed my life. For the winter edition, I’m keeping myself hydrated, which I think is very important at this high altitude.”

Milou and Kristiaan from The Netherlands “This is our first festival in the snow. It’s so pretty and awesome, and we haven’t even seen the Mainstage yet!”

Iwona, Karolina, Seba and Kris from Poland These guys don’t like glitters, but we made them promise they will put some on tomorrow.

Wim, Wouter, Pieter Jan, Tomas and Hannes from Belgium “We’ve been to Tomorrowland in Belgium every single summer and know from experience that we lose each other easily. We bought these tasteless reflective ski jackets to solve that problem!”

Maddy and Romy from the Netherlands “We felt like skiing and snowboarding this year, and we also wanted to go to Tomorrowland’s summer edition this summer. Then we found out about the Winter edition, so we didn’t have to think long!”

CHANTEBISE

There’s no taste like home Chantebise’s ambiance will make you feel right at home, so cosy up with a blanket before you bite into your delicious lunch, and let the chef prepare comfort food that will warm you from within. Your hearty mountain meal will be served in a private lunchbox, like back in the days, but bigger and better. Here, ‘home cooked’ becomes a conflicting notion: from now on, you’ll be wishing your kitchen endeavours could match up to the memories of Chantebise.

SIGNAL 2108

Sweet dreams are made of cheese Melted, grated, gooey or fresh; there’s one secret ingredient that just makes life tastier. Cheese, you say? That is right. Now if you imagine a chef who’s dedicated his entire career to it, you’ll understand why Signal 2108 is where you want to be for lunch or dinner! One of the world’s top cheese refiners, Bernard Mure-Ravaud, is stationed here to share his best creations with you. So if you think you know mountain fondue, think again. Let the expert show you how to really ‘say cheese’!

LA CABANE

Roast it while it’s hot You might be surprised to hear the term ‘slow food’ on a slope, but the results are mouthwatering all the same. La Cabane’s specialty is spit-roasting: a technique that allows for balanced cooking so you can dig your teeth into tender, juicy meat. Even the process itself sounds sexy in French: rotisserie. For lunch, you’ll be able to savour the roasted half-chicken hot off the spit, prepared in one of various styles. Prefer to dine out? La Cabane will roast rib steaks to perfection, just for you.

FOLIE DOUCE

With table service in front of the stage, Folie Douce offers the best kind of crazy.

LE TABURLE

Craft beers & bites Like slopes & snow and music & dancing, some things are undeniably better together. Le Taburle knows this all too well, which is why they’re serving the best of duos: beers & bites. Not just any beers & bites, either; their array of specialty beers team up on the menu with a variety of food. With a cosy wooden cabin feel, you’ll want to linger at Le Taburle for a bit and work your way through all the possible pairings. Just keep in mind you’ll still have to get down the slopes afterwards.

WINTER BRASA

Nothing says ‘hot’ like a winter barbecue Get the best of both of your favourite seasons at Winter Brasa, an outdoor barbecue right in the middle of the festival zone! The days barbecues were exclusive to summer are long gone, especially when you’re working with the state of the art Ofyrs. Their versatility is endless, which is why you can drop by for every meal. A good old steak for dinner? Winter Brasa has you covered. Breakfast from the barbie? You won’t want it any other way!

RESERVE A TABLE Want to eat at one of these splendid restaurants? Go to tastesoftheworld.com to order your voucher!

QUICK BITES & TAKEAWAY Fries

Taverne can be served either sweet or savoury. And let’s be honest here; chances are you’ll want to try both.

Folie Douce, I

Burger heaven A mountain burger or a mountain of burgers? Foulie Douce is a solid bet for either preference. This is the perfect refuel stop for a post-snowyworkout indulgence.

Ride or fry You can take Tomorrowland out of Belgium, but you can’t take Belgium out of Tomorrowland. Get your fix of those famous fries right here. Mad about cheese With a name translating to ‘sheer madness’, they sure are crazy about cheese here. Nothing says Alpine food like wheels of cheese melted straight onto your dish!

Spithouse

Dreamy burgers It all started with a food truck on DreamVille in Belgium, and now he’s here in the French Alps! Get a taste of those dreamy chicken burgers at Spithouse.

Balls & Glory

The taste of winter Cold mountains call for comfort food, and comfort happens to be Balls & Glory’s specialty. It’s mash and meatballs 2.0, with original flavours, fresh ingredients, and veggie options too.

Designed for the very first edition of Tomorrowland Winter, a new milestone in the history of Tomorrowland, the new TML by Tomorrowland Winter Collection delivers a line of warm hoodies, beanies, accessories and T-shirts, inspired by the Hymn of the Frozen Lotus and designed for warm memories in Alpe d’Huez. To the untrained eye, some T-shirts and sweaters in the collection may just seem to feature the Tomorrowland icon in high-quality embroidery. However, if you take a closer look, you’ll see the beautiful horizon of a winter landscape in Alpe d’Huez. Sunshine, mountain pastures, crystals – they’re all there. This is just one of the many designs that pay tribute to the magical horizon of Alpe d’Huez. Along with other warm hoodies and accessories, TML by Tomorrowland’s new range of headwear is guaranteed to keep your head cool and will help create warm memories to last a lifetime. If you think that the collection is limited to T-shirts, hoodies and headwear, think again: to make the most of your stay, Tomorrowland is also launching Limited Edition Winter Gear.

Unique Tomorrowland-inspired goggles and the mind-blowing Limited Edition Ski and Snowboard set are guaranteed to turn heads on the slopes. Emblazoned with a Rose Gardeninspired gold design and Tomorrowland icon details, this high-quality gear will allow you to crush laps at top speeds. Only 100 ski sets and 50 snowboard sets were made, so don’t wait too long to get your hands on these Limited Edition shred-sticks. Feeling cold, but not yet cool enough, then? Visit the Official TML by Tomorrowland Boutique at the Festival (marked with a t-shirt icon on the floorplan) or shop and oneof five selected stores in Alpe d’Huez (mentioned below). Get your gear while supplies last! 1. Superdry, Avenue des Jeux 222, Alpe D’Huez 2. La Folie Douce, Télésiège Marmotte, Alpe D’Huez 3. B’Kolors, Galerie de l'Ours blanc, Avenue des Jeux 69, Alpe D’Huez 4. Ripcurl, 90 Venue des Jeux, Alpe D’Huez 5. Cyril’s Sport, Centre Commercial les Bergers, Alpe D’Huez

T-TIME WITH FRIENDS Bring your friends round for tea at the T-Room by Lipton Ice Tea! There are plenty of reasons to spend your afternoon here, even if you’re not the scones and jam kind of type. With three cocktails and a mocktail, it’s not your typical tea place anyway! With black peach, black raspberry, green lime and mint Lipton Ice Tea as a base, these refreshing mixes are the perfect companions to a good time with friends. And that’s exactly what is key at the T-Room: friendship. The area provides the perfect hangout spot to have a drink and play a game together with those you enjoy spending time with the most. There is an array of games on offer, indoors as well as outside on the terrace. Play old-fashioned board games like Connect Four to bring back childhood memories, or challenge your friends for active games outside on the deck. Not in the mood for fun and games? Kick back on the sunny terrace, cocktail in hand, and just enjoy the music. Find the T-Room at the roundabout, next to the TML by Tomorrowland Boutique!

LIQUIDS OF WINTER Luckily, even in this enchanted chilly land, official drinks distributor Bud

A PERSONAL ASHTRAY

has found a way to keep liquids from freezing. Bud supplies bars all over the grounds with a selection of beers including Belgian craft specialties, soft drinks, and a few stiffer brews. Santé!

Since on the pristine mountainsides of Alpe d’Huez, waste and litter are even harder to clean up than at a usual festival site, Tomorrowland is handing out personal ashtrays called ‘Stübs’ free of charge. These test tube-like devices make it easy to take your cigarette butts with you, even high up on the slopes. Down at the festival sites, you will find larger cigarette bins, into which you can empty your Stüb. The best part is, besides keeping the mountains clean, you will help recycle some extra plastics!

CLOSING THE LOOP

The People of Tomorrow are a special kind: the type that cares about the future, the kind to take care of Mother Nature. That’s why you should definitely visit Tetra Pak at the Alpine Cabin where they upcycle Tetra drinking cartons. Want an example? Even the chairs and tables at the Alpine Cabin are made from recycled water containers! The manufacturer’s water cartons are available all around the festival site, and as you’re the type that is mindful about waste: keep an eye out for the specific PET bins. If you discard your empty Tetra Pak containers in the PET bins, the Recycle Club will make sure they are taken straight to the Alpine Cabin to be upcycled. Here, they are broken down into paper and plastic polymers, both reused in their own way. Paper waste can be repurposed into new recycled paper products, and the polymers and aluminum lining are processed as composite materials to create new products such as chairs, tables and Fatboy filling. Ever knew a drink carton could turn out to become such a comfortable seat?

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS There’s always a way to experience Tomorrowland to the fullest, even when you’re in your chalet, apartment or hotel room. Enjoy the best Tomorrowland music and moments, all week long, on the TV in your room! Simply go to the Alpe d’Huez TV channel and let the madness begin. Starting on Tuesday, Tomorrowland’s One World Radio will broadcast live from the festival with sets featuring nothing but the best tunes. Artists such as Afrojack, Salvatore Ganacci, Yves V, Henri PFR and many others will be invited to join as co-hosts, live in the studio. And there's more: on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the official Tomorrowland livestream will be broadcast from 17h to 22h, bringing all the magic from the Mainstage right to your screen. As you will most probably be there enjoying the party yourself, you can also enjoy reruns all night and day long. Tomorrowland – One World Radio and the live stream are both also available at tomorrowland.com and in the brand new Tomorrowland mobile app. 23

WAVE YOUR BANNERS FOR TOMORROW A tradition eagerly taken with us from the plains of Boom into the windy mountains of Alpe d’Huez are the many flags symbolizing ancestry, creed and belief, flying brotherly next to the official Tomorrowland Flags. So why not let yourself be embraced by love, peace and unity, skiing down the mountain with this colourful piece of fabric wrapped around your shoulders? The official Flags come with two plastic D-rings and two thumbholes to easily wear them as a cape or raise them above the crowd. A small, custom-made bag allows you to carry your flag around wherever you go. And you’ll be doing a good deed while you’re at it: for every flag sold, Tomorrowland donates 5 euro to the Love Tomorrow Foundation. Discover more about this foundation at lovetomorrow.com.

With the Pearls on your Bracelet, you can taste all that Tomorrowland Winter has to offer and get your hands on the exclusive TML by Tomorrowland Collection. Even your Lift & Ski Pass is integrated in your Bracelet, so top up and hit the slopes!

TOPPING UP

PEARLS UPDATE

Every €30 equals 14 Pearls. You have different options to top up your Bracelet with Pearls.

Although the best way to experience this week is to indulge yourself in all that is Tomorrowland Winter, you might want a reality check from time to time. That's why you will always be able to check your Pearls balance online after you've activated your bracelet through your Tomorrowland Account. You can also check your balance at Top-up points and payment terminals.

Online You can add Pearls online through your Tomorrowland Account, at the tab 'My Bracelet' before the festival with your credit card (VISA, Mastercard), Bancontact, Sofortüberweisung or iDeal. If you’ve topped up online before the festival, you will receive an automatic refund for your unspent Pearls.

HOW TO USE YOUR BRACELET

On Site You can top up at the cashless Top-up booths using cash or card with your debit card (Maestro) or credit card (VISA and MasterCard). These are marked with an orange P (Pearl) logo on your floorplan. If you do your first Top-up at the festival site, you will need to fill out the manual refund form in order to receive your refund for unspent Pearls.

Always wear your Bracelet on your left wrist; this makes scanning fast and easy. Make sure the Tomorrowland logo is facing you and do not wear the bracelet upside down. Scan the icon printed on your Bracelet to enter the Tomorrowland Winter grounds and to pay for food and drinks.

DANCING IN THE CLOUDS

Welcome, oh weary traveler. This is the end of your long journey. Lay your belongings aside and take a moment. Find a warm spot and take in the snowy splendor of the Kingdom of the Frozen Lotus. Heartwarming musical adventures await on these magnificent mountains. The Lotus has created a wide array of musical hotspots and spread them across the slopes. Below are some of the major ones, but be sure to explore and the hidden ones too!

MAINSTAGE

GARDEN OF MADNESS

ORANGERIE

MOOSE BAR

Standing a staggering 22 meters tall and 65 meters wide, this brand new design took 15 fully loaded shipping containers just to get here. During the day its frozen stature looks out over the Kingdom, its mighty gaze ensuring that everyone is safe and enjoying themselves. As dusk falls, the Frozen Lotus shows its true form, a grand spectacle of sound, lights and emotion. It will bring you legends like Armin van Buuren, Yves V and Lost Frequencies.

The party continues long after the Mainstage closes out for the day at the infamous Garden of Madness. This giant tent will host the likes of Charlotte de Witte, Paul Kalkbrenner, Kölsch and Kungs. The concept championed by Tomorrowland all over the world brings you the vibes of Ibiza and the magnitude of Sportpaleis Antwerp, all under the breathtaking skyline of the French Alps. From shredding snow to salacious beats, this week has got it all.

Under the dome of the Orangerie you’ll find all you need to replenish your strength: top-notch food, top shelf drinks, and a well-balanced line-up of artists to bring you the sounds of Tomorrow. The humongous sphere welcomes all and is a perfect spot to take a short break from all the fun on the frozen mountain. Eat, drink, and dance to the tunes of Salvatore Ganacci, Netsky and many more.

What’s a ski vacation without a good time at the bar with your friends? At the Moose Bar you’ll be able to indulge yourself in some old-fashioned jolliness, mixed with the quality production you can expect from Tomorrowland. Put your boards away after a long cold day and come warm up under the Moose’s reassuring gaze, shaking what your momma gave you with DJ F.R.A.N.K., Feest DJ Lucki Luc, DJ Mr. E and friends.

TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

As you wander off into the Kingdom of the Frozen Lotus, you may encounter a familiar sight way up high in the mountains. The Amicorum Spectaculum, the roving band of entertainers which took over Tomorrowland a few years ago, makes a surprise return this week at Folie Douce. As you move to the sounds of Joris Voorn, Claptone and numerous others, you’ll have an amazing view onto the Mainstage and the beautiful village of Alpe d’Huez.

We started our journey down in the valley, and as we’re working our way up to the clouds we come across another place of musical joy. LOVE is where you’ll find the early birds, as it’ll host several exquisite Daybreak Sessions brought to you by Yves Deruyter, Dave Lambert and more. The first beats roll over the mountain tops at 10 a.m., so be sure to set your alarm early enough to catch a lift to LOVE.

Winter has hit the gardens of Eden and brought along blissful tunes for this heavenly place. Nico Morano, &ME, Solardo and a host of others will be swinging by to play their very best sets. Wander through Eden as you take a break from sliding down the slopes, warm up your feet and dance. The Eden stage is centrally located, so if you find yourself craving some variety, this is a great spot to start venturing around the massive grounds.

At last, we’ve come to the legendary Top of the Mountain. At a staggering 3300 meters this is probably the highest there has ever been music played by DJs. This one is for the true adventurers, for those who are not only versed in black slopes but can appreciate their surroundings as much as the music. Before you lays an unobstructed view of Mother Nature in all its frozen glory. This truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you can’t afford to skip out on!

Whereas the summer edition of Tomorrowland has a long-running series of opening parties named The Gathering, Tomorrowland Winter offers a fourfold pre-party in the snow named The Welcome. Four very special events, very much in the magical Tomorrowland style, will happen not only in Alpe d’Huez but also in the surrounding villages of Auris, Oz and Vaujany.

Since logistics is tricky business in the Alps, there will be no shuttle buses between the four villages on Tuesday night (but don’t worry – they will be there on the festival days). During the day, you can freely roam the greater Alpe d’Huez area to explore all the stages up in the mountains that are already open, but since the ski lifts shut down at dusk, make sure to get to the village where you’re staying by then. Every one of them has its own selection of worldclass DJs playing The Welcome; Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Dave Lambert, Double Pleasure and Yves V are but a few of the artists scattered across the Alps!

GARDEN OF MADNESS 21h00–22h30 A taste of formidable electro house is here to spice up your pre-party! With nine Mainstage shows at Tomorrowland under his belt, Yves V has released on labels such as Armada Music, Dirty Dutch and Spinnin' Records. Yves truly is no stranger to the People of Tomorrow; for the past four years, he's hosted his own V-Sessions area at Tomorrowland as well. Yves’ successful V-Sessions brand includes a radio station and YouTube channel that the DJ uses to catapult other talents onto the scene. Established names are featured, too: Ummet Ozcan, for example, has graced one of the latest episodes.

Having graced the DJ Mag top 10 every year since 2011, he's here at Tomorrowland Winter to take the party to a whole new level. But back to the beginning – did you know Afrojack collaborated with Dutch DJ duo Partysquad and that's what skyrocketed him to fame? Drop Down (Do My Dance) was his first Dutch top 40 hit, soon followed by Take Over Control featuring singer Eva Simons – a tune we’ll all be singing along to this winter.

YVES DERUYTER

Early afternoons at Tomorrowland Winter are the perfect moments to ease into yet another festival day in the snow. Tomorrowland helps you a little as they’ve programmed unusual early DJ sets by some of the world’s biggest DJs. They’ll play long sets of the sort they don’t get to do a lot: the kind of performances that leave room to eat a croissant and drink a cafe au lait as you gently bounce to the beat.Today’s Daybreaker is Belgium’s rave don Yves Deruyter, whose name will forever be connected to the legendary early rave of Bonzai Records. Deruyter’s sound is usually very ‘nineties’ and uptempo – but no one knows what the selector will come up with this time, as his decade of choice was also known for the abundance of chill-out rooms at raves and the birth of trance. We’re thinking Yves may play you some gently bouncing ambient house tunes, but will he actually? There’s only one way to find out, and you know it!

He has collaborated with Tiësto, Hardwell and many others. In 2001, Van Buuren started producing his own radio show called A State of Trance. It's now broadcasted in 84 countries across 100 radio stations! VINI VICI

WEDNESDAY | MAINSTAGE | 19H00 – 20H00 Israel is the motherland of psytrance. You’ll hear it not only at raves, but also on the radio, at birthday parties, and on wedding dance floors. The country’s prime psytrance producing duo Vini Vici opened Tomorrowland’s Mainstage in 2018, and they make their return this year for the first edition of Tomorrowland Winter. Want to get to know psytrance? These are the guys to ask what it’s all about!

“We love and breathe all kinds of music. But if we have to name a few, Bob Marley, Daft Punk, Air, Chemical Brothers, and classic rock like the Beatles and Queen.” Can you tell us something about your collaboration with Armin van Buuren? “Armin is a true legend. He was so open-minded when we produced the track with him and he is such an amazing producer. We are also happy to announce that our first song with him, ‘Great Spirit’, reached gold record status in Sweden.”

To those of us unfamiliar with the psytrance scene, can you say something about how the genre came about? “Psytrance has existed for many years, actually. It’s been a genre with a lot of cultural and spiritual effects on people since the early nineties. Usually, those who listen to Psytrance also see it as a way of life.”

For those curious to check out the genre, what are your top three psytrance tracks right now? “Those would Dash Berlin’s ‘Man on the Run (WHITENO1SE & System Nipel Remix)’, Major7 feat. David Trindade ‘SuperMan’, and finally, Basscannon & Zanon with ‘MoonWorld’.”

‘Psy’ stands for ‘psychedelic’, of course, but what is it that makes psytrance so psychedelic? “Psychedelic trance is all about the journey through the song. It is essential to deliver a big message in the track, to take the listener to a higher state of mind and to establish a spiritual connection. Usually ‘classic’ psytrance tracks are longer than tunes in other electronic genres, because we’re creating a journey.”

It is often said that DJs can’t dance. Does the same go for you guys? What’s going on with your dancefloor skills? “Haha. Well, we’ll sum it up with this age-old wisdom: the shoemaker’s children go barefoot!”

When was it that you both started getting interested in the scene? Did you start out producing psytrance or did you drop other types of electronic music before? “In our home country, Israel, psytrance is very big. It’s in our DNA, so to speak. When we were kids it was probably the first electronic music style any kid would get exposed to. So, the first song we produced back then was already psytrance.”

You opened the Mainstage of Tomorrowland’s Belgian edition last year. What will your Winter set be like compared to last year? Any changes? “For the last few months we have worked really hard in the studio, so we have a lot of new songs, edits and mashups. We definitely want to maintain our own style and energy, the stuff that defines ‘Vini Vici’ in our shows, but you can also expect a lot of new things in this set. We are very excited and we can’t wait to share all the new music that we have.”

What do you guys listen to when you don’t listen to psytrance? 31

DAYBREAK SESSIONS

JEROEN DELODDER

Warming up is important, People of Tomorrow. You’ve known that since you were little. At Tomorrowland Winter, this means a morning stretch followed by a little boogie at the day’s Daybreak Session, where DJs are lured out of their comfort zone – only to comfort you with the soothing, relaxed kind of dance tunes you’ll want to hear when you’ve only been up for a couple of hours. One of the key DJs at Belgium’s famous Studio Brussel radio station, Jeroen Delodder is known for DJ sets that are all over the shop in a very positive way. He can go rave, he can go trance, but also disco, urban, pop, you name it. So while DJs are meant to come out of their comfort zone during the Daybreak Sessions, this may prove a little tricky for Jeroen, as he’s comfortable playing whatever he wants. Surely, he’ll conjure up some tasty breakfast material and prove to be the quintessential Daybreak Session DJ. How lucky you are today, People of the Early Morrow!

Steadily headlining our Holy Grounds over the past few years and having produced multiple anthems to celebrate the People, the dynamic duo is coming to the mountains of France for a performance that will no doubt equal their usual home matches. The brothers have worked with some of the world’s favourites either in musical collaborations or through their Smash the House label, the list including Yves V, Ummet Ozcan and Martin Garrix. MARTIN SOLVEIG THURSDAY | MAINSTAGE | 19H00 – 20H00

Martin Solveig, the Parisian DJ/producer who once sang in a church choir, moved away from his religious roots around the age of 13 when he purchased his first set of decks. He’s since produced an impressive amount of dance hits and remixes, besides collaborating with the likes of Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, Bob Sinclar and DJ Spen. Ever idiosyncratic and funny, his tongue-in-cheek social media presence has ensured him a loyal flock of new fans over the past years. Prior to his special set in the snow, this icon of French club music shared his thoughts on the current state of house.

I’m a slow producer: on average, it will take me two weeks of studio time to produce a remix, whereas a real remixer can cut one in a day. I do it for friends and people whom I deeply respect, and only when I know I have something to add to the original song. Flume, Tiga and Mark Ronson are such artists – I look up to them a lot.” You’ve DJ’d in the nineties, the noughties and the twenty-tens. How do you feel the trade has evolved over this period, apart from the vinyl-USB transition? “In the EDM/festival scene things have changed drastically with technological modernization. Electronic sets sound like hip-hop sets now, with samples and beat changes every minute. The set is not only about the music, you also have to come up with interesting video content, lights, special effects, decoration… You have to consider your performance like a show people would enjoy if they were simply watching.”

If you had to name three key ingredients of typical Martin Solveig release, what would they be? “I’d say they’re all fun, but not too cheesy, and the beat should always make you wanna dance.”

What music do you dance or sing to at home when nobody’s watching? “Lately, I’ve been very into ‘Shake it Off ’ by Taylor Swift, Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’, besides so many other songs, of course.”

You’ve produced a great amount of tracks on your own, but have also been engaged in many collaborations with other artists. Which way of working do you prefer? “I find myself wanting to collaborate more and more these days. You learn a lot from someone else’s different approach, and also it’s fun to work with a teammate.”

We know you’ve played at many venues and festivals across the world, but… have you played in the snow before? “Yes, but only once! On New Year’s Eve 2011 I performed at Tignes in the Alps. It was quite amazing, everyone is naturally dressed to party in moon boots.”

If it’s about learning from a different approach, would you say there is a big difference between co-producing a track and remixing a track? “It’s incomparable. Producing your own song means writing and composing beats and melodies that are yours. Remixing is a reinterpretation of a song that’s not yours.”

By ways of goodbye, what are the three French words the People of Tomorrow definitely need to know now that they are in France? “‘Touché’ simply means touché. ‘Sympa’ is the word we use for ‘sweet’. And when something is cool – another easy one, actually – we say ‘cool’, too!”

How do you usually go about when selecting tracks for remixes? Do you find tracks you like yourself or have you been approached by others for the majority of the tracks you’ve remixed? “I’ve done four remixes over the last five years, I’m not really a remixer. First because 33

DELAFINO

By Friday, it should have become rather clear: Daybreak Sessions are a lot of fun, but they also serve a purpose. They were invented for you to loosen your hips a little before the heavy banging starts later in the day – as well as to give popular DJs a chance to do things they don’t get to do very often any more. With past and present residencies at Defected in the House, Ibiza Global Radio and Pacha on Tour, Belgium’s Delafino is a true connoisseur of smooth and glamorous house. Having enjoyed a broad musical upbringing wherein soulful genres such as funk and disco were an important influence, with people like Barry White, Donna Summer and the Jackson family playing an important role, this Flanders-born and bred DJ is more than capable of playing house with plenty slow jam influences. That’s not a bad idea at all for a final Daybreak Session – so be sure to sing it all together: “I feel love!”

LOST FREQUENCIES FRIDAY | MAINSTAGE | 19H30 – 20H30

In a mere couple of years, he went from being an aspiring talent to being a constant factor in the scene, and by now, Felix De Laet aka Lost Frequencies is one of the faces of Tomorrowland. The young prodigy emerged from the crammed pool of dance music stars halfway through 2014 and immediately delivered a worldwide hit: ‘Are You With Me’. Alongside colleagues such as Charlotte de Witte and Netsky, Brussels-based Lost Frequencies is part of a surging wave of dance music talent coming out of Belgium. Supported by Tomorrowland through and through, he’s even joined Tomorrowland on their journey to Nepal to open the very first Love Tomorrow Music & Arts School. For this week’s French adventure, he opens up about his musical path. First, a question about technology – how important has Shazam been to your career? “Immensely important, really. Especially in the beginning, I think, when people had maybe heard my track but didn’t know me as an artist yet. Shazam helped fans and listeners around the world identify me, which can only be a good thing! Is the fact that everything is Shazamable these days one of the reasons you started focusing on live sets? Because DJ sets have become more alike? “No, I wouldn’t say that. In making my own music I try to transcend dance and electronic genres. As I got along doing that, I started to wonder whether I could work with a team to create a ‘different’, more immersive live show experience, using solely my own music and original productions. It has been something I wanted to experiment with and expand on for a while now, and I’m glad it’s finally coming to fruition for me on a bigger scale, ahead of this summer.” Tell us something about your arena run with the Chainsmokers, what happened?

“The guys invited me as a special guest to join them across their arena tour of the US. They’re really cool, really funny, but also exceptionally talented at what they do. I loved working in the same space as them and saw that tour as a learning curve – I’ve headlined my own arena dates at home in Belgium, but to do it in a country as big as America was crazy!” They say you ripped up the rule book with your remixes. What do you think people refer to when they describe your remixes in this way? “Thank you! I like to not follow conventional paths that people may think of. In ‘Are You With Me’, for example, I used feel-good and tropical beats as a basis for Easton Corbin’s vocals, which had more of a country feel to them. I listen to all types of music and I want to create a cool mix of indie, dance and various other genres, but I still try to respect the original tracks.” What’s the one remix you’re most proud of and why? “It wasn’t a remix per se, but my debut release was an edit: my take on Easton Corbin’s ‘Are You With Me’ we just talked about. It all blew up from there for me as an artist.” Tell us something about your label Found Frequencies, what’s the philosophy behind it? “To support and nurture new talent. I want it to be a home to some super cool collaborations and releases! I’m really enjoying it!” Back to that live show – for all who have seen you play live last year, can you share any spoilers as to how things will be different this time around? “Nope, not quite yet. I like to keep it a surprise, haha! But I will say that to be playing Tomorrowland’s first ever Winter edition is set to be crazy. All my favourite artists, the best attendees and huge productions – what’s not to love? I am more than excited to party on the slopes!” 35
