PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

THE HYMN IS FROZEN IN

YOUR HEARTS FOREVER!

White. Blinding, beckoning white. Bright, crystalline blue, billowing clouds of grey, lights flashing in every colour, sounds to lift your heart to higher heights – your heart, friends, home to love, friendship, unity, and everything else that matters. Your heart is where you felt the Hymn of the Frozen Lotus, and into your heart you welcomed it; it changed you from the inside, and all too soon, you became a glittering shard of ice. Now that you’d been attuned to Winter’s dominant element, the temperatures bothered you no more, and you conquered the slopes and stages with enthusiasm. The domains of Alpe d’Huez were

set alight with energy – a fiery explosion, intense enough to withstand endless streams of snow every day at the Mainstage. Home to the Spirit of the Frozen Lotus, this crystalline contraption proved to be the site where your transformation was made permanent. Under the Spirit’s watchful guidance, you froze love, joy and friendship in your heart forever, let go of all selfishness, and became one with your peers – the People of Tomorrow. Do you feel it, friends? Each and every one of you, in their own particular way, became a Lotus too. Go forth now, go home – and blossom, spreading what you’ve gathered here all over the world.

THE SOUNDS OF THE SLOPES

TRAILBLAZING TRAVELLERS,

GET HOME SAFE!

You were the first ones to experience Tomorrowland Winter and scale its peaks; now, it is time to descend. Board your bus, car, plane, boat, get seated, and have a safe and pleasant journey!

The red thread connecting anything and everything at Tomorrowland Winter was most certainly the music. Ranging from Delafino’s soulful house sounds to explosive bigroom by Martin Garrix to Charlotte de Witte’s rock-hard techno, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

A WINTRY CHAPTER HAS BEEN WRITTEN! This was it: the first ever edition of Tomorrowland Winter. With 30,000 People of Tomorrow from all over the world, eight stages and many smaller areas, the Hymn of the Frozen Lotus blossomed into a story of untold magnificence. During daytime, the main attraction was, of course, the ski slopes. For as long as a week, brightly dressed People of Tomorrow jollily went up the lifts, coming down even happier as they shredded the pistes without a care in the world. Along the way, there was much to be enjoyed even beyond the

And we come alive, we run the night with strangers ‘Cause in the end, we're all familiar faces We’re young and wild, enjoy the ride, we made it We made it Martin Garrix ft. BONN – No Sleep

breathtaking mountain vistas: six official stages and Music & Food Experiences were scattered across the mountains, providing ample opportunity for a musical or gastronomical intermezzo. Once the views had been taken in and the slopes descended, a treat of a whole other level was in store. The magnificent, snow-streaked spectacle at the Mainstage, the warm comfort of an Orangerie lined with food stands, the indoor musical mayhem at the Garden of Madness and the added silliness of a packed Moose Bar made for a festival experience unlike any other. Of course, when all was said and done, not everyone had quite

spent all their energy yet, and lodgings at Alpe d’Huez and the surrounding villages played host to numerous informal gettogethers into the small hours. All in all, it was proven that even in full ski gear, the People of Tomorrow know how to party, and that even after nights of raving, they can manage to carve up the slopes in style. Luckily, the proceedings were registered by photographers on skis and snowboards, by helicopter crews, as well as by reporters with ears pricked up and pen in hand; so read on for an elaborate recap of the latest chapter in the story of Tomorrowland.

EARLY ARRIVALS FLYING TO THE PEAKS

Some lucky early birds got to travel with Amare, Tomorrowland’s very own ruler of the skies. This steelwinged falcon has been an important part of the festival since 2017, when it first started transporting People of Tomorrow from all over the world to Boom, Belgium. For Tomorrowland Winter, it went the other way, flying from Brussels to Grenoble with its precious passengers.

More than just a festival, Tomorrowland Winter had a special, extended sort of treat in store for those wanting to spend a little extra time on the slopes: the first People of Tomorrow to arrive at Alpe d’Huez had secured 7-day packages, and came in on Saturday and Sunday already. With appealing snowy slopes and a daily dose of music lying in wait, what was not to love? The early birds got to enjoy the pistes in relative quiet, partied at the stages in the mountains which were already opened, and once they got back down, they found the Orangerie in full swing with the likes of Yves V, Henri PFR, and Da Tweekaz at the helm. Some had travelled a long way to get here, but now that all had arrived – even before the madness of the official Welcome was to break loose – there would be no stopping them.

Ed, Wouter, Rick, Nancy, Tom and Sam from The Netherlands “Our navigation stopped working, so it took us 16 hours to get here,” said Tom. “It took us 11 hours with the other car from the same town,” his friends chimed in. “You just like to take your time!”

Lotte & Emmy from The Netherlands

Armando & Alfredo from the United States

Even though they live in the neighbouring country of the Belgium edition, this winter is Lotte and Emmy’s first time at Tomorrowland. “There's no other option than going all out this week. Otherwise we could have just stayed at home, right?”

Armando and Alfredo got married just a week before Tomorrowland Winter, and chose Amare to take them to their honeymoon destination. “We try to be part of all the special editions, because it’s such a great excuse to travel. We went to the first TomorrowWorld in 2014 as well!”

You Are Welcome To

THE WELCOME In perfect analogy with the infamous The Gathering opening party at Tomorrowland’s home ground in Belgium, Tomorrowland Winter was kicked off with The Welcome. Divided over four ever so enchanting locations, The Welcome lived up to its name by admitting one and all into snowy winter wonderland. The Welcome was all about sliding gently into the madness, as it was easy enough to ski or board right from the slopes into the fairytale – literally, since its locations were based not only at the main festival area, inside the Garden of Madness to be precise, but also in the neighbouring villages of Auris, Oz and Vaujany. The Welcome was the exact moment when the Frozen Lotus awoke fully, bringing about the collision of two worlds: Tomorrowland and the micro-universe of this majestic mountain. Auris welcomed the likes of Double Pleasure and Kid Noize, in Oz the groundwork was laid with DJs such as Yves V and ASLOVE; Nico Morano and Goldfox held the People of Tomorrow of Vaujany in their arms, and at the main festival site BASSNER, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano as well as surprise act Afrojack proved that putting the Garden of Madness on a mountain lifts the spirits higher as well. Smiles and warmth were to be felt all around as the beats cracked open the cloudy skies over Alpe d’Huez. It’s a good thing that temperatures went below zero, or there wouldn’t have been any snow left – this was a very warm Welcome indeed! Given some of the not-so-fresh-looking

Virginie Belgium “I’m actually here to work, but during The Welcome we have some time left to relax and check out the surroundings and stages. We haven’t really seen anything crazy yet, but I sure hope that things will go mental during the rest of the week. I’ve checked out the Moose Bar already, and that will definitely become one of the hottest places this week.”

John & Lisa Ireland “If you think we’ve been skiing, you’re wrong, because snowboarding is what we’ve been up to learn the difference! We’ve been on the slopes a few hours per day and then we gather here for the music. We’re looking forward to seeing Armin van Buuren most. We saw him at previous Tomorrowlands in Belgium and he always delivers!”

faces juggling their skis down the slopes the day after, it can be safely assumed that the party didn’t stop as The Welcome petered out at 1 a.m., but then again, that’s only to be expected when the Spirit of the Frozen Lotus has you in her magic grasp. If one thing became clear during this night, it was that this was your very own experience to mold any way you wanted to!

Steven & friends Switzerland “We went to the Summer edition of Tomorrowland dressed as doctors, and we figured it would be kind of cool to wear Top Gun suits for the Winter edition. They’re pretty ski-friendly, you see. One of our friends is a master skier and you’ll definitly see him doing the so-called ‘Royal Christie Turn’ - check it out!”

Medhi & friends France “We’re here to ski and party, but if we had to choose one I guess we’d go with partying. The line up is just as grand as ever, with the likes of Vini Vici, Armin van Buuren and Timmy Trumpet. My friend here likes MATTN as well, but I suspect that feeling goes beyond her DJ skills (laughs).”

Stephanie America “I’m half Brazilian and half American and I live in Paris. I’m here on my own, but it’s pretty easy to make new friends when everyone is in such a good mood. I love to dress up as well, I’m sporting a style that can be best described as ‘the yeti who got tangled up in some Christmas lights’.”

The Welcome was where the world of Tomorrowland and the marvels of the mountain came together.

FIND YOUR FREQUENCY Enjoyed Lost Frequencies’ set at LOVE on Wednesday, or better yet, his Mainstage show on Friday? Then there’s some good news in store for you: Felix the boy wonder is going on an American and European tour with an all-new live show! “In my songs I try to transcend dance and electronic genres, and I’ve been aiming to do something similar with my live show for a while now,” Lost Frequencies elaborates. “We’ve been working on an entirely new show. It’s more immersive, more explosive, and I will only use my own music and original productions.” With dates booked across the USA and Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands, Lost Frequencies will be introducing his refreshing sound to entirely new audiences this fall. Are you ready to tune in to his vibes?

A WATERY CIRCLE

What if, instead of throwing things away after use, we could upcycle our leftovers into entirely new products? At their Alpine Cabin, Tetra Pak gave a glimpse into a circular future as they broke down empty water cartons into reusable components before your very eyes. There was even a pair of Waste Scene Investigators on hand, apprehending those who threw their rubbish on the ground! Of course, none of this was done for naught: just as the People of Tomorrow care for a better future and enjoy the natural splendour of the Alps, Tetra Pak does their part to preserve natural resources by re-using the ones we already have. Their water packaging was designed to be recycled, and at the Alpine Cabin, the process as well as the results could be seen. First, empty cartons were shredded and separated into component materials; from the paper, new paper can be made, whereas the plastic polymers from the cap and the aluminium from the lining were repurposed into chairs and tables. And the littering offenders? They repented, and will sort their waste properly from now on!

A COOL DRINK

MADNESS AT THE WHITE ISLE From the 18th of June ‘till the 24th of September, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike return to Ibiza for the third consecutive year of their residency at Ushuaïa, officially presented by Tomorrowland. An all-new, custom-built stage is set to blow away the island weekly on Tuesdays, with support coming in from artists handpicked by the brothers themselves. If you’re yet to book a summer getaway, this might be your chance!

Thanks to official beverages partner Bud, Tomorrowland Winter was amply supplied not just with two brands of pilsner and an assortment of Belgian craft beer, but also with ample soft and stiff drinks. Thanks to their bars scattered across the stages as well as their deliveries to existing venues around the mountains, a refreshment – or a hot drink to drive the cold from your bones – was never far away.

FUN TIMES AT THE T-ROOM What’s better than a Lipton Ice Tea-fueled cocktail? Ice Tea-fueled cocktails & mocktails and tabletop games with friends, of course! At Lipton’s T-Room, it was all too easy to take a break from skiing or dancing and switch things up with some good, old-fashioned fun. Nestled in a cosy, ivy-covered wooden hut next to the Moose bar, the T-Room’s cocktails were a welcome treat to a group of guys from Norway dressed in an appropriate colour. “No need for the heating, though – with the temperatures we’re used to, we’re sweating right now,” they added over their game of Jenga. While others around them played draughts (checkers) or pick-up sticks (Mikado), our Norwegian boys enjoyed a wintry Mellow Yellow cocktail with Lipton Ice Tea Peach, fruits and grilled marshmallow, and their Djenga tower collapsed into a big shambles. Who won, you ask? “None of us – we are Team Useless!” 11

lifting you higher They’re the silent servants who take us up the mountain quickly and safely, they’re a cause of annoyance and hilarity during many ascents, and they’re the most ubiquitous and indispensable element of any ski area: the lifts. A week in wintry paradise means many hours spent in seats and pods, hours spent with fellow skiers and People of Tomorrow. It is said that what happens on the lift stays on the lift – but is that really so?

Jeron & Roy From Israel

“We learned a new word while on the elevator: ‘preparty’. But do you know what pre-party means to us? Skiing. We’ve been skiing for twelve years now, but we’ve never been to Tomorrowland before, even though we wanted to. Now, our two loves are coming together. The secret is to go as crazy on the slopes as you do during the festival.”

Claire & Andrew from the United States

“You know, there’s always a bit of small talk going on in the lifts. We like to ask people questions like: ‘if you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?’ Our answer would be Tahoe in the US, because you can ski there during winter, while in summer you can chill and party by the lake.”

Lexy, Paul & Nick

from Hong Kong & China Lexy: “We’re obviously here to ski, board and party, but next to that there’s a whole sideshow to enjoy. I’ve been trying to master the art of picking up guys, and learned that dancing in front of them is a very effective strategy. In the lifts I ask the guys how the snow conditions are. If they can come up with a good answer… chances are, they’re good at the rest as well (laughs)!” 12

Alpe d'Huez boasts 85 lifts and roughly 250 km of pistes.

beyond the clouds! Frederik & John

from Norway “Up until now it’s just been us and our friends on the lifts. We talk about where to go, because it’s the first time we’re here. We want to hear where the best and craziest slopes are. Where to eat, where to drink and where to party, and at what time. Pretty practical stuff, actually!”

Emilie

from Belgium “My family actually has a house here in Alpe d’Huez, so we’re not here just for Tomorrowland, but it’s a nice change of scenery compared to our usual holidays. It’s fair to say that the village went through a makeover, but apart from the stages being really loud we can’t complain. We’re really enjoying the vibe!”

Coralie from France from France

“The most important thing on the lifts is to learn from other people what the best place to be is at that time. It does happen that we share stories and anecdotes of what happened last night, but up until now, we’ve behaved ourselves pretty decently, actually. We’re looking forward to the crazy things that are yet to happen!”

SECRETS OF THE MOUNTAIN Alpe d’Huez is situated on a fully south-facing plateau in the French Alps. With 300 days of sunshine per year, Alpe d'Huez Grand Domaine Ski is a paradise for skiers, snowboarders, adrenaline seekers, and for those who simply like to walk and take in the scenery. The ski area is equipped with no less than 85 lifts and offers fun for every level of skiers and snowboarders: from beginner areas to legendary ski slopes like ‘Sarenne’, with a length of 16 km. The domain’s slopes add up to a grand total of 250 kilometers and attract snow enthusiasts from all around the world, making Alpe d’Huez the ideal landing ground for a festival that is all about frost: once a year, the otherwise eerily quiet mountains are turned into the wonderland that is Tomorrowland Winter, and the lifts are taken over by the People of Tomorrow. 13

GOING DOWN IN STYLE WITH

ARMIN, STEVE, SUNNERY AND RYAN Here’s a crazy idea: what if Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano got to ski & board down the mountain together? What seemed like a utopian proposition at first soon became reality, as it turned out that these four musketeers of electronic music have a fair amount of shredding experience between them. So here’s what you get: going way down hill with Armin, Steve, Sunnery and Ryan. Hold on tight!

14

ALPE D'HUEZ

Before this week, no one knew if any of you guys actually skied, but luckily for us, things seem to be working out fine Ryan: “Well, Armin is the only one who’s skiing. Me, Sunnery and Steve are boarders!” Steve Aoki: “But this is the very first time we’re doing this together, actually. We should do this more often. It even makes me want to go skiing with Armin one day. You see, I’m from Southern California, and out there everybody boards. Where I’m from we’re into the three S’s: surf, snowboard, skate. The fun thing is that you can do all three of them pretty close to each other. The mountains are only a three-hour drive away from the coast.” Sunnery: “And Steve does all three of them in his very own way (laughs)!” Will you be doing any tricks? Steve: “I’m gonna jump over Armin! Sunnery and Ryan will be doing backflips. Let’s see how crazy this can get.” Who’s going to be the first one to arrive at the foothills of the mountain? Armin: “I only started skiing when I was 29, so I’m afraid I’ll be the the last one there. I’ve been doing it for about a decade and I really enjoy it, but I didn’t exactly grow up with it. Not so for my own kids, though; my son can’t even tie his own shoes yet, but he can get down the black slope any time of day. And that’s because we taught him to ski before he learned to be afraid of what could happen when things go wrong, I guess. He’s fearless! I’ll do the blue and red slopes myself, but I’m not sure whether I’ve trained my ‘I can ski without being afraid-face’ well enough to try one of the black ones.” Ryan: “I think at snowboarding, Steve Aoki is king. At what age did you start, Steve?”

ALPE D'HUEZ

THE

HYMN OF THE FROZEN LOTUS

Steve: “When I was still a kid, like 15 or something. And what Armin says is true. I felt invincible. When you’re young, you act like nothing can hurt you.” Isn’t it nice for you guys to wander, board and ski around here in relative anonymity, wearing goggles and hats? Ryan: “For us, maybe, but for Steve it’s still difficult. They all still recognize Steve, even with his goggles on.” Steve: “The funny thing is that with our skis and snowboards on no one is able to stop us, we’ll just slide away: see ya!” Armin: “It can get uncomfortable when you’re in a lift together with people you don’t know, though. You try not to draw too much attention, but eventually people will recognize you and things can get awkward very fast. Especially when they recognize you, but can’t quite put

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

their finger on which one of those DJ guys you actually are (laughs).” Armin, Sunnery and Ryan, this is the third year of your residency in Ibiza. Did you become friends through those seasons on the White Isle or were you close before? Sunnery: “Ryan and I, we go back almost twenty years, so we know each other quite well, obviously. And we’ve been working with Armin for almost eight years now. Now that we went skiing together, we’ve gotten to know each other even better (laughs).” Do you actually see each other a lot in between gigs? Do you guys have afternoon tea together, or go to Sunday matinees? Ryan: “Back in the day we used to hang out 24/7.

15

2019

But from the moment you have kids, your life obviously takes a bit of a different turn. You’re going to want to be the best dad there is. So outside of playing, we don’t see each other that often anymore. Or at least not as much as we did when we were ‘young-er’.” Sunnery: “If we hang out too much our wives will become jealous, and we wouldn’t want that, haha!” With all the time you spend on tour, you must know a few of one another’s secrets. Sunnery: “There’s many a secret to be told, but not many to be shared! You know, it’s like that old French saying: what happens on the mountain stays on the mountain. But I’ll let you in on a little one. A couple of years ago Ryan and I were playing a gig with CDs – this was before USB sticks became popular. We had just burned a whole new folder of CDs, we happened

2019

ALPE D'HUEZ

“When you’re young you act like nothing can happen, you’re invincible!” to be playing in the mountains too, and we were going to go to Miami the next day. But we got so drunk that we ended up sleeping scattered all over the room, nowhere near our beds. As you can imagine, our gear and our CD wallet were nowhere to be found, although the crew ensured us that they were still behind the booth where we left them. Later that day, we found out that in our drunken spree of destruction we, ourselves, threw the CDs off the mountain as though they were frisbees.” Armin: “How very professional of you guys!” Ryan: “Not one of our proudest moments, no. Afterwards, we took the decision to play with USB only, and up to today that has proven to be one of the best decisions ever.” Sunnery and Ryan, your new record’s called ‘Shameless’, but what are you most ashamed of? Sunnery: “I’m pretty ashamed of my toes, actually. But I try to live with them. I kind of destroyed them playing football, they look like an oak tree.” Ryan: “Last week we were sitting on a boat with a film crew and I actually saw him covering up his

toes, so there’s some real issues there (laughs).” Sunnery: “I’m not exposing my toes on Instagram. But let’s face it: maybe they’ll help me beat the lot of you at boarding.” Armin, your new track is called ‘Lonely For You’, but with your family and all those people around you, is there ever a time when you are still lonely? Armin: “Well, there’s the predictable story of the DJ all by himself in his hotel room, with his iPad as his best friend. But that’s the price that happens to come with this awesome job, so I absolutely don’t mean to complain. Sometimes you just have a day off on your own and you’re at the hotel. You’ve worked out for two hours, gone through all of your e-mails – but the wife’s busy and the kids are at school, so there’s no calling them. Those are the difficult times, but they come with the job.” Steve: “If you love what you do, it’s worth !t.” With that nugget of wisdom, off the musketeers went, into the great white open. See you next year, snow devils?

A TOUR OF THE SCENERY For Tomorrowland Winter, though the setting was familiar, everything had to be created from scratch – including the stages, which varied from small co-hostings with local restaurants to the enormous Mainstage, and were much farther apart than is usual at music festivals. One last time, strap on those skis and take a tour of all the musical hotspots!

MAINSTAGE

She’s become a genre of her own, she’s got a bit of a temper, she’s colorful yet fierce and fiery, and she’s the biggest of them all. To say it with an old-time platitude: this is where the magic happens. During Tomorrowland Winter, looking at the Mainstage was like stepping into a world of wintry wonders, towards a futuristic palace of fire and ice. The crystalline palace, to be precise, of the Spirit of the Frozen Lotus, who beckoned you forward with her Hymn. And oh dear, did you answer that call! Listening and dancing to the EDM greats of the Earth, it was all too easy to be hypnotized by the lasers, lights, and fireworks giving extra allure to the falling snowflakes. 17

2 Orangerie Literally located at the end of the slopes, the Orangerie was designed to illustrate the grandeur of early twentieth-century floriculture. ‘Orangerie’ is French for winter garden: a greenhouse with a lot of glass, allowing flowers and plants to soak up as much sun as possible during the winter months, and enabling the cultivation of rare, exotic species. And flourish those exotic species did: the Orangerie mixed food, drinks and music into a potpourri where colourful People of Tomorrow could be found with beaming smiles on their faces all day long. Even the dragon of Tomorrowland Belgium’s Rose Garden popped in from time to time!

3 Eden Situated in the epicentre of the main festival area, right between the Orangerie and the Garden of Madness, across from the Moose Bar, and under the ski lifts moving the crowd about, Eden was a place where everything and everyone came together. The stage was surrounded by the enchanting Tomorrowland Winter lanterns with their brightly shining flames on top, glowing as if they fed on your body heat. Whether you were dancing in front of the wood-adorned DJ booth or sitting about and relaxing, looking out from the Lipton T-Room or the TML by Tomorrowland Boutique, Eden was a true paradise to dwell by. 21

5 Garden of Madness There might be no ‘I’ in ‘People of Tomorrow’, but there sure is a ‘Tomorrowland’ in ‘Tomorrowland Winter’. And that means that the idea of taking the Madness to the mountains was taken very literally. Those of you who have been to the festival’s main stomping grounds in Belgium may have recognized the butterflies and certain other details here... The Garden of Madness was a whole new level of winter clubbing, as evident from the temperature difference between inside and outside. The doors stayed open until 2 in the morning, but the sound will keep ringing in your head forever!

4 Moose Bar It’s a concept that has proven to be very successful (and foreboding) during the past two summers in Belgium: an après-ski hut featuring tasty details like beautiful, braided mädels in lederhosen, red-and-white chequered shirts, big pints, a lot of shots and a touch of what the Belgians call ‘ambiance’ – or perhaps we should say, a no-holds-barred atmosphere in the style of ‘Anton aus Tirol’. This was exactly the party that one would imagine thinking of life in the mountains, where people are always looking for that shot of spiced liquor to warm the heart again after a long day of fun in the snow.

6 Amicorum Spectaculum When you took the Marmottes 1 ski lift to Folie Douce, whether you went up for some skiing or just to enjoy the view and party, your first stop was at Amicorum Spectaculum, a stage that looked out over the village and the surrounding slopes. Under clear conditions, you could see as far as the valley deep down below. The carnavalesque realm of Amicorum Spectaculum – one of the most extravagant chapters of the story of Tomorrowland – held its own like no other, even with temperatures diving far below zero.

7 Love Taking the DMC 1 or Jeux lift towards the top had you meeting plenty of people shaking off the icicles at LOVE. This grand terrace was a welcome stop for those coming down one of the black slopes from the Top of the Mountain, as the sight of its beating heart meant they were halfway there. Big walls of snow surrounded the platform that looked out over the ridge, and under the DJ booth – shaped like the basket of a hot air balloon – you could warm your cold heart to the likes of Klingande, Netsky, and a Daybreak Session by Yves Deruyter.

8

Top of the Mountain by The North Face

If you didn’t already have your head in the clouds at Tomorrowland Winter, there was always the Top of the Mountain stage to take you even further. At a staggering 3,300 meters, this was the highest DJ booth ever built, maybe even the highest place where music was ever played. This stage was for the true and audacious adventurers, for those who weren’t afraid to dive headfirst down the black slopes and into the music. It was an experience not to be missed during the course of the festival.

Thought you’d seen it all with the stationary stages? Not so – every day, the Snowcat stage was set up at two different locations in the mountains. One of the lucky ones to play this guerrilla DJ stage was Charlotte de Witte. “I didn’t know what to expect, actually,” she said, “and to be honest, I wasn’t sure if there’d be any people there at all. Usually when I do intimate or radio sets I start off with a build-up towards deeper techno tracks. But since a big crowd showed up, I threw my selected tracks overboard and started to improvise. It was pretty cold even inside the Snowcat, so I can only imagine what it was like for the people out there. But things got cosy and the temperature rose fast.” Later that night, Charlotte would play the Garden of Madness, so the Snowcat was a great way to ease into the Tomorrowland Winter feeling. “It was a great warm-up for my set later tonight. I only have one hour and fifteen minutes, so I’m going to have to squeeze all the bangers together. I’ll even throw in ‘No Good (Start The Dance)’ by The Prodigy in there, as my tribute to the late, great Keith Flint... May he rest in peace.” And that’s not the last we’ll hear from Charlotte this year: “After the Tomorrowland madness, I’m looking forward to taking my club concept KNTXT on the road again. We’re doing Fabric in London, T7 in Paris and we’ll do a second edition of KNTXT XXL at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp in December!”

Taburle

Signal 2108

La Cabane

Food and music go hand in hand, and that’s exactly what was happening at Taburle, the place with Alpe d’Huez’ biggest terrace. This was the hottest place in the Alps with the heat of the kitchen, the warmest of beats and the scorching rays of the sun all swirling into one big explosion of awesome sensations.

That modernist-looking pyramid you saw breaking through the snow at approximately 2,500 meters high was Signal 2108: a restaurant slash comptoir slash solarium halfway down the mountain where DJs, chefs, music lovers and foodies stood happily next to each other. Curtis Alto, Kid Noize, and many others provided the tunes.

There was a bit of a toll to pay if you wanted to reach La Cabane, as this little house on the hill is only reachable via the slopes. For an afternoon snack, a meal to regain your strength, some drinks, and DJ sets by Yamo, Sinnermen, and many more, La Cabana was the hideout you’d always wished for.

COMFORT FOOD Steaming hot soup, a warm focaccia sandwich or a plate of panciotti – what more could you ask for after a long descent down a wind-stricken mountain? A snug shelter to protect you from the elements, perhaps? Carrefour had you covered on all fronts. “Our personal favourite is the organic coral lentil soup,” the enthousiastic crew exclaimed, waving at passersby to come and taste their creations. “What country are you from?” they went on to ask every client, before revealing that they were making a list of the nationalities of all their visitors. With a few dozen collected, they were already about to run out of space on the first festival day. No matter where you were from, at any rate, Carrefour’s little chillout area offered a very wintry kind of homeliness, with seating, snow-covered fir trees, and a roof over your head to boot. Bon appétit!

CONNECT FOUR FOR A PRIZE Listening to music and going to festivals are both journeys, just like exploring the French Alps. Crédit Mutuel, one of France’s biggest cooperative banks and proud supporter of music & festivals for 15 years, agrees; and so RIFFX, the Crédit Mutuel-kickstarted platform for those who play and those who like music, set out a quest to take you all around the mountains. “We’re staying at Auris en Oisans, but we’ve also been to Oz en Oisans now, and we won’t stop ‘till we’ve collected all the stamps,” Caroline and Olivia Solange from Denmark say, referring to their RIFFX stamp card. This unassuming little card, when filled with stamps collected from all four RIFFX Friends of Tomorrowland stages, could be exchanged for an exclusive Tomorrowland armband to be worn over your ski gear. At the time when they were interviewed, however, this was still a surprise for the Danish duo. “We don’t know what our reward will be, but we are filling that card and taking it to the Boutique no matter what.” That’s the spirit of the mountain!

BE KIND, REWIND For those not with us in the mountains this weekend, there was a livestream to enjoy every night of the festival. But what if you want to reminisce about all of those glorious moments yourself? Simply go to youtube.com/tomorrowland, put on one of the videos, relive the madness – and spread the love.

TOMORROW’S ATTIRE Surely, over the past days you’ve seen many a daredevil barrel down the slopes in exclusive items from the TML by Tomorrowland Winter Collection. Perhaps you’ve even bought some for yourself at the official Boutique. But if, upon your safe return home, you still feel the urge to shop for your next winter holiday – or for a summer outing at Tomorrowland Belgium or elsewhere – there is a solution at hand. Go to store.tomorrowland.com, and before you know it, the whole world will see you for who you are: one of the People of Tomorrow.

MUCH APPRECIATED! What would Tomorrowland Today be without its readers? A meaningless piece of paper, that’s what. Thank you for reading!

TASTES OF THE WORLD

HAUTE CUISINE ON THE MOUNTAINSIDE

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

ALPE D'HUEZ

Tomorrowland’s Tastes of the World has always been a benchmark for varied and high-quality festival cuisine, and even all the way up in the Alps, that tradition was honoured. A large assortment of food was to be found all around the festival area and the pistes, and local restaurants opened up their doors to provide exclusive food experiences for the lovers of haute cuisine. It is hard to capture the tastes on offer in words – but two of the week’s gastronomical masterminds, cheese chef Bernard and grillmeister Bart, shared their tales of cooking in the mountains and the French connection.

ROAST STEAK WITH A FRENCH TWIST Those lucky enough to have set foot on the Holy Grounds last summer might have recognized the unique design, the smoke and the smell: Brasa returned to Tomorrowland as Winter Brasa! Grillmeister Bart shared the secrets of those mouth-watering dishes. First of all: welcome back! “Thank you! It's great to be here. Last year was our first time at Tomorrowland, and we had the honour to serve over 7,000 people. It was awesome. Here, things are a little different. Of course, we grill outside all the time, but cooking out in the snow.. that’s something else. We did our best to make it just as special as last time. Our location is beautiful and the view is stunning, so we’re off to a good start.”

What are you guys actually doing here, how is the food prepared? “Our Ofyr grills, which are unique, round cooking pits, are heated up and ready to grill your tomahawk steak to perfection. We offer top-quality beef in an ambiance that breathes the Tomorrowland experience. We try to source all of our food locally, so our steaks come from French prime Limousin cows. We use eggs from around the area and our mash is made from French potatoes, too.” Are you serving the same food we enjoyed at Tomorrowland last summer? “Oh no! Of course, a different season calls for a different dish. We could hardly serve a light salad to hungry skiers. Sub-zero temperatures require food that keeps you warm, and especially if you’ve been on the slopes all day, the tapas-style options we offered before just won't keep you going.” 28

The technique is the same, the dish has changed? “Yes. It's important to us to be unique and of course, the atmosphere is different here. The audience is a little more mixed, the vibe is different. So we decided to change things up a little. Now, we are only serving one dish. Our famous grilled beef with asparagus is still here, but it’s accompanied by mashed potatoes and carrots. We don't mess around with our ingredients – they don’t need much, they’re great on their own and even better together. Honestly, it’s delicious – you should try it!”

CHEESE

A FRENCH TRADITION

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

2019

The quote “cheese is my wife” sums up Bernard Mure-Ravaud's life. The former Cheese Making World Champion runs a cheese shop in Grenoble and is about to open a restaurant in the same town serving only dishes that contain – you guessed it – cheese. His delicious cheese tartiflettes could be tasted just outside the Orangerie. When did you first get excited about cheese? “I used to sell fruit at a market when I was a teenager, but I was always enviously spying on whatever went on at the cheese stall. I followed my gut feeling and started a business selling the food I loved most.” What’s the importance of cheese within French cuisine? “It’s becoming more common to eat cheese as a starter these days, or even as a main dish. Cheese used to be mainly known as a dessert here, but it’s a shame to eat cheese that way. By the time you get to the last course you’re kind of full already, after all.” Are all of your main dishes cheese-based? Can you name a few? “In the new cheese restaurant in Grenoble, all main dishes will be cheese-based and that’s very unique. We’re going to serve dishes such as raclette, fondue, tartiflette and raviole, which is similar to Italian ravioli.” Do you have a preference when it comes to cow’s cheese, sheep’s cheese or goat’s cheese? “The trick is to switch between them regularly, so you never get bored!” Did you prepare something special for the People of Tomorrow? “We thought we’d set up a stall with mostly tartiflette, a local dish from the Alps made with potatoes, reblochon cheese, lardons, and onions, but it’s proven to be kind of a hard sell. Everyone knows what pizza is, but tartiflette… Let’s say we still have some education to do, haha.” Did you get to party yourself, or are you at your stall full-time? “Yes, we did get to party a little on Wednesday, to the beats of Henri PFR!”

ONE WORLD RADIO RELIVING THE MADNESS

Waking up to great music is an instant energy boost, wherever you are. Whether you’ve been up here in the French mountains or as far away as New Zealand, Argentina or Alaska: with the start of Tomorrowland’s very own 24/7 radio station, Tomorrowland - One World Radio, all of the world now has access to the Madness whenever, wherever. Over the last week One World Radio broadcasted live from Alpe d’Huez and brought you the best sets the festival had to offer, combined with drop-ins by the likes of Dimitri Vegas, Steve Aoki, and Afrojack. And the best part? You can expect a lot more in the future! Tomorrowland - One World Radio is a celebration of fifteen years of Tomorrowland fueled by unique mixes, iconic live sets from all of the festival’s editions over the years, and a lot of fresh, hot and happening content. The station will grow out to become a reiteration of what Tomorrowland stands for, a way of conserving the Madness through an expansive library of livesets and exclusive mixes, as well as a live broadcast uniting every nation under one big worldwide flag. Highlighting the demand for such an initiative, One World Radio host Adam K says, “When we rang Salvatore Ganacci up to ask him if he’d be willing to make 30

“It’s not about coming up with the best questions; it’s a matter of letting the artist provide you the best answers.” some special mixes for us, what he said was, ‘I totally don’t understand why this didn’t already exist!’” And given the history of the festival, their access to exclusive material and the many accolades Tomorrowland has gathered over the years, our dearest Salvatore has a fair point there. Adam K: “We have a broad spectrum of genres to choose from, but the key proposition is that it’s always in the mix 24/7, meaning that we never stop. When we play sets from previous festivals we call it Reliving the Madness, so in everything we do, the link with Tomorrowland is very strong.” Tomorrowland - One World Radio is also responding to the way the radio landscape has been transformed over the past years. “Radio has changed so much,” Adam K says. “In the old days, you used to tune in to your FM or AM and what you were able to hear was limited to where you lived. Now, in the digital age, our age, we broadcast worldwide through streaming. We reach people in Mexico, Iraq, New Zealand... All countries are covered, and that’s what unites us all.” Another key feature of Tomorrowland - One World Radio is that they can literally take their show on the road, or in this case, way up the mountain. “We brought our studio to the Alps and we’re broadcasting live from inside the festival,” Adam K explains. “What’s cool about that is that we can capture the festival’s spirit and hold on to the livesets for later times, thus again using them to Relive the Madness. Reliving the Madness is different from making live radio – we have a special tool for it, comparable to the well-known music and TV streaming platforms. The thing is that we’re broadcasting worldwide, so we’re in different timezones. With our tool, people can stream the liveset or historic mix they want when they want it. But of course, merely streaming sets is not enough; radio is a very suggestive medium, and it’s all about the human element. It’s about that special way of feeling involved in what’s happening in the airwaves. That’s what Camille, Valery and I are there for. Luckily, we’re getting a lot of help from some of our favourite artists. Armin van Buuren usually kicks off the week with a mix and it he’s really a part of the team. He’s a true professional and definitely doesn’t need much production. Another show we love is the One World Top 30 Countdown with NERVO: the People of Tomorrow can vote on their favorite three songs of the week through the app, and NERVO present the results of the tally in one massive Top 30 on Friday night.”

Lost Frequencies’ Top 3 Tracks 1. “My remix for ‘American Boy’, a mix between a radio song and a deep house track.” 2. “My track ‘Reality’ usually does the trick as well.” 3. “And to round off with, my new single, ‘Recognize’.”

During Tomorrowland Winter, all the greats of the festival got behind the mic with Adam, Camille and Valery – including underground figureheads like Patrice Bäumel. “It’s been fun to do a DJ set at One World Radio, as always,” he described the experience. “It always depends on the host and Adam is a great one. Very friendly, very enthusiastic, and that makes it super easy.” Adam K was obviously flattered by those words, but shifts the compliments right back to the DJs visiting him in the studio. “The point for me is that I always want to make people look the best they can,” Adam says. “It’s not about me, it’s about them. A good interview is about sharing the light. You don’t need to come up with the best or the most extravagant questions; it’s rather a matter of persuading the artist to provide you with the best answers. If you manage to do so, you’ll be able to share a bit of that light automatically.” Patrice Bäumel’s Top 3 Tracks 1. “My latest production – so that would be ‘Grace’ at this point.” 2. “A track by a producer I really believe in, so something by Ruede Hagelstein.” 3. “As a third track, I would chose a forgotten track from ten years ago.”

You can tune in to Tomorrowland - One World Radio via tomorrowland.com as well as through the Tomorrowland App. One World Radio will be broadcasting 24/7 as well as offering several live sets, special mixes and legacy performances for streaming. 31

BRUSSELS CALLING A staple of Tomorrowland’s Belgium edition, Studio Brussels once again set up shop at Tomorrowland Winter. With live appearances by famous DJs and exclusive sets, StuBru provided a radio link between the French peaks and Tomorrowland’s home country. If you’re feeling nostalgic later, all of StuBru’s live broadcasts can be replayed online through their website!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO… Of course, you knew this already. But since it is, by all measures, the event of the year, here’s a reminder: Tomorrowland’s regular Belgium edition is not-so-regular at all this year, since it’s the 15th birthday of the magic, the madness, the love and unity, the People of Tomorrow. Tickets are sold out – but if you’ve missed your opportunity, there’s always the live stream. Block your schedule: July 19th – 21st and 26th – 28th!

WINTER’S CHALICE What better way to celebrate winter and restock on energy than with a classic vodka-Red Bull? Perhaps if it came in an extra special package… something like an especially designed cup, a reward for coming down the slopes at breakneck speed? Red Bull had you covered! Of course, with the liquid energy of Red Bull running through your veins, it’s that much easier to practically fly up and down the mountain. But while that drink is available elsewhere, too, you can only be at Tomorrowland Winter once a year – so that calls for a keepsake, a memento of your shredding skills. That’s what the special cup, available for an extra Pearl on top of your Red Bull-vodka, was for. Carried home full of memories, it’s an ideal mantelpiece… And don’t forget to take a sip and relive your precious Winter moments every now and then! 33

AN ADE GETAWAY As if the spectacular debut of its Winter edition weren’t enough, Tomorrowland is taking its show on the road again for a celebration of its 15th anniversary at the Amsterdam Dance Event. On the 17th and 18th of October, the Ziggo Dome – The Netherland’s largest dedicated music venue – will be home to a magical show of a whole new kind. Curious? Ticket pre-registry is already opened through my.tomorrowland.com and sales start May 25th.
