THIS IS HOW THE STORY STARTS P E O P L E O F T O M O R ROW,

It’s a matter of hours now, friends; only manageable minutes, countable seconds, before you pour into the Holy Grounds once more. Can you hear the singing of the stories yet – the delicate, soft sounds of tales whispered in your ears? Can you feel them beckoning, begging you to come and listen? It seems you do, for already, you’ve collected a few stories of your own: the stories written yesterday, during those momentous hours by the hand-held globe of The Gathering. What wonders did you see there, what new friends did you meet? Did you take note of the sagas of their

lives, of the twinkle in their eyes as they told you all about their dearest memories? Whatever you experienced, be sure to lock the recollections in your heart, and they will become a part of the greatest story ever told – the one recorded in the Book of Wisdom. Now, prepare yourself to be immersed in Wisdom proper, to witness the opening of that monumental tome. Step through the door to the library, feel the flutter of the pages as long-forgotten tales are brought to life once more – by you, reader friends. You’re the ones who make this real. Remember that, go out, and learn.

A DROP OF HISTORY

he sound of a drop falling on the otherwise silent library floor draws my attention. Knowing how detrimental water damage is to antique books, I make my way through the maze of bundled stories. Moving closer, the frequency of drips seems to rise, and a small splash gives away the location of the culprit. My finger follows the back of the patient narratives until it touches a damp diary cover. ‘The Story of Planaxis’, it reads.

Releasing it from its confinement, a layer of dust gives away the book’s long history. Another drop rolls out from under the cover, its salty taste a hint of joy-fueled tears. But instead, the first page unfolds a different explanation: a beautiful drawing of a mythical city hidden far beneath the ocean’s surface.

diary is, as the words are even more captivating than the hand-drawn illustrations. Amidst the many wise books contained in this library, this one stands out as a true gem. It was only a year ago, or so it seems, that hundreds of thousands travelled to the underwater world of Planaxis. Why did they leave this marvellous place, then? Between The Story of Planaxis reads like a dream, with thought-to- the lines, the answer can be read: be extinct animals floating around lagoons and underseas they never really did move out – in valleys, towering seashells occupying the ocean floor, and fact, each and every one of them aquatic greenery from all over the world blooming and has locked Planaxis in their heart. blossoming. It’s bewildering how underappreciated this

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

FLY LIKE AN EAGLE Travelling to Boom inside the belly of a bird from a different world: it sounds too perfect to be true, but it actually happens every year when Amare comes to Tomorrowland. Extending her wings all across Europe, Amare allows People of Tomorrow to meet their peers from all over the world even before they hit the ground running. The great news is that it works: plenty of friendships were made already on last Wednesday’s flight from Ibiza to Brussels.

TOMORROWLAND PARTY FLIGHTS You can take a party flight from 11 different cities including Washington DC, Hamburg and Ibiza. Party flights can be booked as part of a Global Journey package, in a collaboration between Brussels Airlines and Tomorrowland. The flagship airplane Amare was designed by eight different artists including a father and a son. All party flights are preceded by a gate party before boarding.

All of Tomorrowland’s eleven party flights naturally include a banging DJ set and delicious food. But even ordinary things feel very different on board. Initial welcome words are provided by a duo of elves, who also act as the official party starters as soon as the food is cleared from the tables. Rather than the usual airline menus, giant glowsticks are stuck to the chairs. And of course, the raving gate party organised as part of the Global Journey and party flight packages has already given some things away before take-off. Shortly after party starts, people with Tomorrowland and national flags are screaming and bouncing along to a smashing series of tracks that includes a version of Human Resource’s 90s rave classic ‘Dominator’. When a few handfuls of excited Amare flight attendants join in, the party is complete. While the last tunes are being played, the pilots and cabin crew start getting themselves ready for the flight, some of them slightly nervously, as it is a very unusual working day for them. It certainly is Belgian pilot Thibeaut’s very first party flight, although he’s flown Amare before. “It's amazing to fly a plane that looks like a bird. When we start flying over the wonderful island of Ibiza with its blue skies, pay attention, as you’ll be able to feel what it’s like to be an eagle in flight.” Thibeaut and his co-pilot feel their tasks are 4

a little different today: “We’re always responsible for taking passengers to their destination safely, but today we also feel proud to be part of Tomorrowland, to bring people from all over the world together. We’ll add a few extras to our announcements too. We’re going to ask them to close the window shields, and to bring out their glowsticks to get in the mood for a party, for example.” After a big round of applause, the dancers slowly make their way to the gate. Queueing up to board a plane has rarely been this much fun. Though most people have obviously never met each other before, the vibe is one of mutual appreciation and friendship. Chef de cabine Patrick smiles, but also realises he needs to get the party people seated in an orderly way. Apart from some banging EDM coming out of home-brought speakers, for a few moments this seems to be a fairly normal flight. All of that changes when the seatbelt sign is switched off and Roger van Damme, one of the world’s most famous patisserie chefs, starts to put the final touches to the amazing creation he’s about to serve to all passengers on board. He talks effortlessly while he does his job: “No matter what people have been up to before boarding the plane, I want to make sure they experience the best of the best, in line with everything else at Tomorrowland. The dessert has a base of crushed ice cream cones, mixed with chocolate

“I took the Global Journey trip because I wanted to turn a weekend break into a longer holiday to explore more of Europe. I went to Amsterdam and Ibiza before I got on the flight.”

with a chocolate-coated ball on top, filled with chocolate mousse and with a core consisting of citrus fruit.” As soon as the tables are cleared away, one of Belgium’s prime house DJs gets out of his chair in the front row to set up his gear. Antwerp’s DJ Licious first played Tomorrowland back in 2010 at a small stage near the festival entrance. After producing his first tracks, demand for his performances went up and when he reached the charts with ‘Calling’ in 2016, Licious was invited to play Tomorrowland’s Mainstage. “This is the first time I’m playing a party like this, ten kilometres up in the sky, but I always go with the flow. Seeing that ever yone has to remain seated I wonder what the vibe will be like… but I think I already know the answer. It’s Tomorrowland after all,” Licious rightly prophesizes. “The only thing I’m slightly worried about is what will happen in case of turbulence, whether I will still be able to do my job then. At least it won’t be as disastrous as it would’ve been back in the days of vinyl though – I don’t think the stylus would stay in the groove for longer than a second!”

Lucas & Karen (Brazil)

“Last year, Karen went on a Global Journey trip to Berlin with a friend and I happened to stay at the same hotel. Karen and her friend were the first two Brazilians I saw and we discovered the city together. Then something happened between me and Karen. Now, a year later, we’re on the same Global Journey trip to Berlin together, and I asked her to marry me.”

Luckily, the flight proceeds without a hitch. The crowd is left wanting more after Licious’ last tune, but it’s time to get ready for a safe landing. The seatbelts are strapped in and things look just like they’re back to normal again… but only for a short time. Back in Brussels, it’s time to create more memories. And to round off this first leg of the journey, literally everyone on the plane gets themselves a picture with the two elves, in front of that beautiful mechanical bird, Amare.

Chasitty (Canada)

“I keep asking myself, is this real life?”

The Tomorrowland livestream is accessible from every nook and cranny, so wherever your peers are on this beautiful planet, send them to tomorrowland.com for their share of the action! Fri: 17h00 - 01h00

BIRD'S EYE VIEW

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? What if you don't have to choose? Experience both at the Amare Ferris Wheel! Get a bird's eye view of Tomorrowland from the highest point in the attraction named after everyone's favourite aeroplane. Amare, Brussels Airlines' Tomorrowlandthemed plane, flies People of Tomorrow from all around the world home to where their heart is: right here. Although they would love to taxi Amare straight onto the Holy Grounds, that’s not possible – she’d outright overpower the music from the nearby Freedom stage – but luckily, a (free!) ride on the Ferris wheel will also get you high up in the sky. Every gondola is named after a different Brussels Airlines destination: imagine wearing your best outfit in Milan, snapping a selfie at the London Eye, or checking out Times Square in New York. As you rise and rise, snap a shot of the most spectacular view of the weekend and post it on Instagram with #BrusselsAirlinesLoop, and you'll get a print of your picture for free when you finish your ride. The Amare Ferris Wheel is located right behind the Freedom stage – but then again, you can't really miss it from wherever you are on the Holy Grounds.

Feel like going the extra mile? You're invited to try the Doritos Dare. This game sends you into a black box with nothing but a chipped Doritos chip in hand. Out there in the dark, it’s your mission to scan hidden chips with yours, while the clock is ticking: you only have one minute to find the five chips. Meanwhile, tension builds as your friends outside can follow your footsteps in the dark through a night-vision camera. Chipped all your chips? Spin the wheel of fortune and claim your fame, and your prize!

SPARKLE AND SHINE WE NEED MORE SPACE

Rumour has it that that a number of extraterrestrials fled the US as an effect of 1.5 million people signing up to storm the topsecret Area 51 military base. It appears the otherworldly visitors then took note of the anniversary of the world’s most international gathering, and promptly decided to join up. A wise choice – what goes down at the Holy Grounds stays at the Holy Grounds, after all, so we trust you not to alert the authorities about this outer-space gift. 7

Feeling like adding some brightness to your look? Delegate the art of make-up to the artists of MAC Cosmetics at the Marketplace and you’re guaranteed to illuminate the hearts of those around you. The smile one wears when feeling like a million pearls shines brighter than any light can. The make-up artists present have created three looks to choose from: ‘Glow Getter’, ‘Turquotic Treasure’ and ‘Sweet Stardust’. All have been designed with the energy, love and passion of the People of Tomorrow in mind. Using an SPF 30 fixer, they make sure the art on your skin stays put and your skin is protected again the sunshine. Everyone is welcome from as early as 9 in the morning, and they request only 5 Pearls and 15 minutes in exchange. And afterwards? Take a seat in their porch-swing surrounded by flowers to make a lasting memory of the occasion!

STARTING NEW CHAPTERS AT

DREAMVILLE

As the People of Tomorrow set foot on DreamVille, new friendships are already being formed and smiles are everywhere to be seen. Even though people are still busy setting up their tents and carrying heavy bags filled with riches, not a single gloomy face is among them; different nations are uniting to build adventures at the campsite. Colourful flags are represented throughout the fields and our planet has never seemed so small and united.

The People of Tomorrow seem to be ready to open up a new chapter of the Book. Where do they come from? What will be in their stories? Let’s find out…

Far from his home in Porto Alegre, Brazil, we find Tiago proudly strolling around the DreamVille grounds. “After two years of waiting, I finally managed to get here. I’m so excited!”

9

Catarina and Eduarda from Portugal travelled here for the freeminded spirits of Tomorrow. “We cannot wait to become a chapter in the return of the Book of Wisdom,” they smile.

One team, one mission: this group of friends from Australia travelled over 24 hours to teach the People of Tomorrow their unique slang. “Get a dog up ya!” pack leader Dimmy yells. “Yep, that’s definitely our number one saying.”

“I’m sorry, I’m just such a Harry Potter fan,” Anthony from the Dominican Republic chuckles. “I had to bring my Slytherin flag – wouldn’t it be amazing to have a Slytherin flag in the Tomorrowland aftermovie?”

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

Hiba from Germany cannot wait for her first festival ever. “Being here on DreamVille, it already feels like another world. I need that, I just want to write my own story, being in another realm.”

Tomas from the Czech Republic starts his day with mixed feelings, instead of the usual mixed drinks. “I had to leave my wife and little baby at home. She wanted me to have this experience, but I’m missing them already,” he says.

RISE & RECOVER

Energy can be sourced in a multitude of ways on these Holy Grounds we stand upon. Eager to get the blood pumping through your body? Want to start the day feeling fresh as a daisy? Want to revisit the satisfying feeling one gets after a good work-out? Visit the Recover Area, located opposite the DreamVille Chill-Out, and join in on one of the classes available. Sparkle with sweat and have an experience you won’t regret. Fully engage and show your power… and then treat yourself to a well-deserved shower.

As of this morning, Yutaki, Miyake, Angeline, Jerlin and Rykiel from Singapore are set up on the DreamVille playground with nothing but the intention of enjoying every single second here.

Ana and Fernando from Argentina returned to the Book of Wisdom as a part of their honeymoon. “We did travel here with double intentions.” Fernando laughs. “My sister came along on a hunt for the man of her dreams.”

“We want to bring the world together by sharing ours.” It’s a tough statement brought by five tough blokes from Scotland: Ryan, John, Dougie, Jamie and David proudly present their flag.

Fabio, Flavio and Leandro from Brazil and the Netherlands returned to Tomorrowland to catch up with each other. “We are a close family, but we don’t see each other so often, because of the distance between us. Oh, and we need a million pictures together – for everyone back home.”

“The Book of Wisdom returned and so did we”, Sabrina and Anna from Liechtenstein state. “We’re happily going back to dancing, glitter and more dancing!”

SORTING THINGS OUT with

The Recycle Club

DreamVille’s lush green fields and lovely sunshine are provided free of charge by Mother Nature – everybody knows that. But have you stopped to consider that all of the stuff you bring along to DreamVille ultimately comes from nature too? Cups, plates, bottles, tents, chairs – all of that plastic, metal and fabric is made from plants, oil and rocks. None of those things are infinite, and every time we simply throw something away, Mother Nature pays the price. Luckily, a solution is at hand: the Recycle Club is on a mission to increase the re-use of materials at DreamVille and Tomorrowland to 50%, up from 22% last year. There’s no better way to Love Tomorrow than by doing your part.

Kit out your campsite Everyone’s invited to join in taking care of nature’s precious gifts, and your invitation comes in the form of the Recycle Kit. Use this nifty package to doll up your encampment with its own waste sorting facilities – it’s as easy as throwing plastic bottles (no cups!), cans and drink cartons into the blue bag, and other waste into the white one. If you have any questions about what goes where, the Recycle Teams roaming DreamVille are always at hand to help out.

Welcome to the Clubhouse Planted squarely in the middle of DreamVille, the Recycle Clubhouse is the Recycle Teams’ home base, and a fun place to hang out at that. Here, you can watch as a 3D printer creates new furniture out of plastics recycled from last year’s waste. Drop off your blue PMD bags to give it some fuel, and collect unique 3D-printed beads for your wristband in return. You can also pick up new Recycle Kits.

Eleonora (26): “We get to share the vision we have for a more sustainable experience with the People of Tomorrow and I literally get goosebumps from the joy that brings me. Together we can actually make a difference, activate and inspire people to bring their trash here and show them that we can make wonderful treasures with it.”

Closing the loop Waste collected from the Clubhouse and the Recycle Points around DreamVille is taken to Tomorrowland’s very own recycling facility, which is close to the festival. Here, the materials collected at the campsite are sorted out further – by hand, mind you! – so that they can be properly re-used. At separate facilities, the resulting highly pure materials – say, a truckload of metal cans – are washed and ground or cut up. The result is a raw material that can be used to make many kinds of new things, with the difference that Mother Nature hasn’t suffered for it. Love Tomorrow Recycling is often seen as a hassle, especially at festivals. But once you get to know the awesome new things that can be made with your rubbish, and how important doing so is for nature, it will become a sport to sort as much as possible. So drop by the Clubhouse this weekend, become a member, and Love Tomorrow! 13

This statement is backed up strongly by the Far mhouse, a gathering of food stands that remain tr ue to the origins of their cuisine. EVERYTHING CHICKEN The Spitthouse stands for everything chicken: freshly grilled, tasty, and a joy to consume. They serve it in all kinds of forms: juicy chicken wings, the one and only Spit burger & baked potato, or a soft flaguette bun. Owner Margaux explains a small part of her secret: her homemade dressings. “We add a caesar dressing for lovers of a good classic, and a pepper sauce for the daredevils among us. Oh, and it’s just really good hangover food,” she chuckles.

Craving a breakfast with fresh eggs and bacon? Or do you have a preference for a pork stew with fresh fries? At Duroc d’Olives you can find a varied selection of recipes that have one thing in common: every single dish is built around pork from one of the best pig breeds in the world. Chef Olivier explains: “With our product, we like to keep the supply chain short – our products come straight from the farmer, then go right to the DreamVille Farmhouse for all your morning to midnight cravings.

TA S T E T H E M A D N E S S Ever had your brain saying salad, but your stomach autocorrecting it to ice cream? Jarni, Yvon and Kevin have you covered. “We want people to taste the Madness, and have them create it themselves,” Kevin says. The boys’ Magnum dipping bar features the iconic ‘Make my Magnum’. So whatever topping you crave – goji berries, coconut flakes, chili rings or fresh marshmellows – the remixing is up to you. “It’s what we call the ultimate experience of Magnum craft and indulgence,” Kevin adds. The food stand also offers vegan options such as the Vegan Almond.

FUNGUS-BASED PROTEIN Caffungi is an urban farming project from Antwerp that creates vegetarian dishes around oyster mushrooms that are grown on coffee grounds. Chef Guita enthuses: “We created our menu together with star chef Kevin de Backer, with the mutual idea of eating healthily as well as taking care of the environment. Our products are very popular because the mushrooms are low in calories, but very high in protein – and all vegan.”

BURGERS & PIZZA SHOWTIME

Italian food custom-made for everyone, is how chef Wim explains his dishes. “Ranging from vegetarian pastas, poached eggs, breakfast platters to asparagus and meat, we try to offer an assortment that works out for everybody at different times of day. Every dish is freshly prepared.” When asked for his favourite plate, Wim chuckles. “Stop by and see for yourself!”

Manuela and Wilma proudly present the brick ovens at Gazsinker. “We serve authentic smoked meats and grilled pizza – and make a show out of it,” Manuela says. “In addition to good food, Gazsinker provides appropriate drinks and a oncein-a-lifetime experience, of course. With the largest BBQ of the Netherlands, we prepare delicious home-made burgers. Just sit back, relax and enjoy!”

You were 30,000 strong, and a line-up packed with Belgian and international DJ talent led the very first charge on your dancing muscles. Just when your tents were put up, DreamVille got baptized with beats and you were guided into the very first night of magic. Next to the magnificent stage, a dazzling circus of lights, sound and fireworks, and a first encounter with your fellow People of Tomorrow, The Gathering also welcomed two impressive surprise acts by the names of Lost Frequencies and Afrojack. It’s been said before and we’ll say it again: don’t call The Gathering ‘just an opening party’, for it is the ultimate kickstart your heart requires to boost off into the Madness of the weekend.

YOUR GATEWAY TO PARADISE

Citizens of DreamVille: that was pretty awesome, wasn’t it? Just when we thought that last year’s edition of DreamVille’s opening party, The Gathering, was the one to rule them all, you’ve actually managed to push the envelope even further. You were happy, you were energetic, you were colourful, you were dancing, you were smiling, and you were spreading the kind of love the hippies were singing about 50 years ago. For those of you who are visiting Tomorrowland for the first time this year, The Gathering was the ideal way to ease into the weekend, get a glimpse of the magic that awaits you, and start to get accustomed to what that so-called Madness is all about. The regulars amongst you already knew that this starting shot on Thursday becomes one for the books year after year, and that there’s no way of overestimating the impact of The Gathering. With a lineup consisting out of greats like Henri PFR and Yves V, special appearances by Afrojack and Lost Frequencies and some exquisite Belgian talent like Flashback Force, Prinz and Double Pleasure, the musical odds were in your favour. This was your gateway into the weekend: this was The Gathering.

Callum from the United Kingdom: “I always dreamt of coming here and now I’m here. I couldn’t be happier, really. I want to see everything and everyone, every DJ, all over.”

May and her friend from Thailand: “It’s my friend’s birthday today, so we are super excited! What we’ll be going mental over this weekend? Three words: Armin van Buuren.”

Luke from Australia: “I’m here with my mate, and we’ve just met these girls. When you’re want to get down, you go for it, right? We’ve been on a plane for 25 hours, just for this.”

Monica from Bulgaria: “I actually booked tickets to see Loco Dice, but then I found out that he is only playing the second weekend. No worries though, we’ll make the best out of it.”

BELGIUM 2019

Line and her friends from Finland: “Even though it’s the fifteenth edition of the festival, I’m convinced that it is still us, the People of Tomorrow, who make this festival so great. We’re all friends here.”

Sharlyn and Scott from the United States: “Let’s be honest: this is the best music festival in the world, so we just had to be here. We’re desperate to check out Maceo Plex this weekend. Oh, and Carl Cox’ Daybreak Session!”

Sebastian from Germany: “You know, the organisation is flawless, the stages are great, the music is top-notch and the people are ever so friendly. Everybody should visit Tomorrowland at least once in their life.”

Juliana from Portugal and Michaela from the Czech Republic: “We live together in London and travelled here together. We’re dying to see Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike. The roof is going off, I promise.”

Richard from the Netherlands and Scalina from Bulgaria: “It’s our first full weekend at Tomorrowland, but we’ve had day tickets before. We’re curious to find out how great and awesome the stages will look this year.”

Patrick from the Netherlands: “It’s our sixth time here at Tomorrowland already, and what’s special this year is that there’s 25 mates of ours camping here. You’ll mostly find us at the Q-dance stage.” 19

LIFE’S SUNNY, SO LOVE TOMORROW

A message of love in its purest form appeared in Tomorrowland Today’s inbox not too long ago – for a beautiful soul that’s dealing with an unbeatable fight against cancer. Visiting Tomorrowland and witnessing Don Diablo’s set at the Holy Grounds was Sunny’s biggest wish. His friends got in touch and kindly asked us for help, as they wanted to make the experience even more special. His ticket was bought, the flight booked… but unfortunately, due to recent changes in his condition, Sunny could not make the long journey from Australia. His friends are here and have come to Tomorrowland in his honour, carrying with them an Australian flag with the Tomorrowland logo, dedicated to their friend. They share the following message of love to Sunny from the Holy Grounds of Tomorrowland: “Dear Sunny, you are such a hero to us, you gave not giving up a completely new dimension. We miss you here with a smile and a tear. You are legendary, and we will dance the weekend away for you.”

FULLY CHARGED

Sending a message of love, hearing a warm voice filled with joy at the other end of the line; going out for a while, knowing that you’ll be able to connect with your friends a bit later… and sharing the memories you’re making with the people you hold dear. Proximus don’t want anything standing in the way of that, and that is why you can visit them at the Marketplace to acquire a powerbank. 10 Pearls will get you a Tomorrowland-branded powerbank that you can exchange for a fully charged one as many times as want to, for no extra fee. This way you will always have the power in your pocket to be as connected as you’d like. Upon return of this especially-designed source of energy, you will be credited 8 Pearls, meaning that 2 Pearls is all it takes to ease the worry of finding a power socket when needed. You are also more than welcome to keep the collector’s item, to hold a lasting memory of Tomorrow!

EMBRACE FREEDOM

From the design right down to the line-up, everything at the Freedom by Budweiser Stage oozes beautiful, spellbinding and breathtaking magic. At this superclub within a festival, expect to be pelted with lights and visuals, even as the music takes you to newfound heights. Friday, for instance, will end with a world premiere, as Eric Prydz presents EPIC:HOLOSPHERE. The Swedish producer will place himself inside a spherical structure at the center of a 360-degree 3D hologram, a design that has never been attempted before. And that’s not the only thing that will make your jaw drop at the Freedom Stage this weekend: Ferry Corsten, Bakermat, Paul van Dyk and Tiga will also have the audience taste and experience freedom in its finest form. On Sunday, The Metropole Student Orchestra have been invited back for a 60-minute, spectacular recital of ‘Symphony of Unity’ and Martin Solveig & Friends will take on the marvelous task of hosting the stage. There will also be an array of astonishing sets by Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk, Aly & Fila and Ben Nicky, to name a few. A million Pearls couldn’t keep the People of Tomorrow from feeling their blood rush through their veins in delight at the Freedom by Budweiser Stage this weekend!

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

KEEP IT SAFE, ENJOY TOMORROW

octors go to parties too, as evidenced by Ken Dewitte, who goes to Tomorrowland every year as a visitor. This year, he’s looking forward to seeing Netsky most. But Ken isn’t just any old music fan: he is also an emergency doctor at Antwerp University Hospital, where he treats people who need acute help, including those who are adversely affected by drug use. Here, the doctor/DJ-lover shares his ideas about his practice, explains some of the risks involved, and explains how to keep an eye out for your friends.

Tomorrowland is one of the most happy and positive places in the world, and it’s seemingly difficult not to have a good time. “That’s most easily done when you keep yourself out of the danger zone,” says Dewitte. “Drug taking is a risk that’s not worth taking, and many people don’t realize you don’t have to binge-use in order to put yourself in danger. Alcohol has its dark sides too, but cocaine, MDMA/ecstasy and other hard drugs are harder to dose. Everybody knows you won’t die after three standard drinks, but class A party drugs can cause strokes, heart attacks and heart rhythm disorders, even after taking very small amounts.”

impossible. Dewitte adds to this that for young and inexperienced people from abroad, dosing can be another issue. “Strengths of substances may differ locally, so relatively small amounts of a drug are likely to affect the body quite strongly.”

As a doctor, Dewitte has been in many situations where desperate friends brought a victim into the hospital, overcome by feelings of guilt. “They often say that he or she normally never takes drugs, and they regret even bringing up the subject of taking drugs before heading out. Apart from general medical treatment, we usually cool down patients with ice when they’re overheated, which is a common symptom. It works in some occasions, but in others it doesn’t. That feeling of powerlessness when you can’t help a young and previously healthy person is one of the saddest things. That’s why one of the things I always suggest to people who do want to take drugs is that they keep it to themselves, without trying to convince others to join. You will never forgive yourself if a friend dies because you’ve suggested for him or her to take drugs.”

Things to look out for when you realize your friends have been taking drugs include decreased levels of responsiveness, wobbly legs, a desire to lie down, an inability to think straight and, in some cases, drowsiness. It is also important to keep track of how much water your friend drinks, says Dewitte. “Too little is no good. If someone has a dry mouth or dry, chapped lips, that’s a bad sign. But too much is no good either. If you see someone drinking abnormally high amounts of water, bring them to the medical team on site. They’ll give them some salts to help recovery. Lastly, it is absolutely essential not to let shame determine what you tell the doctors. I can’t stress this enough – you can safely tell the doctors exactly what you or your friend took, there will be no bad consequences for you. But the doctors can only help you properly if you’re honest.”

Love people, don’t take drugs

One of the reasons drug use is particularly dangerous is that severe injuries can be caused by inverse circumstances. “When taking drugs, there is a danger of dehydration, but also of overhydration. If you drink too much water, the body’s salt levels are thrown out of balance, leading to potentially lifethreatening situations. Another potential cause of harm, even with limited intake of drugs, is a heightened level of adrenaline. This causes one’s blood vessels to narrow and one’s heart rate to go up, leading to many potentially deadly scenarios.” People coming to visit Tomorrowland from abroad run an additional, serious risk, says Dewitte. “People don’t tend to bring drugs on the plane, so they buy it in Belgium from dealers they can’t possibly trust.” And if you don’t know exactly what a dealer gives you, dosing properly becomes practically

Clearly, the best way to avoid trouble is to not take drugs. And it’s important to note that avoiding drugs means more than taking care of just yourself. Dewitte: “If you say you come to Tomorrowland because the vibe is international and you love everyone, I think it’s also good to consider people who are badly affected by the drugs trade. Think of how many runners end up in jail or even end up sentenced to death, just because there’s a demand for party drugs. Others get killed by the drug cartels. By not using drugs, people around the world experience a much better Tomorrow.”

TASTE THE LOVE

Psssst... Want to hear a secret? Are you ready to give your taste buds the ultimate Tomorrowland experience? Excited to let them explode with the flavours of the world? Well then, you’re in luck! There are rumours going around that if you ask nicely at the restaurants situated on the Holy Grounds, they might have a table ready for you – even if you missed out on the opportunity to make a reservation beforehand. Wouldn’t that be a wonderful, stomach-loving surprise? But don’t wait too long, as they’re highly soughtafter spots. Will you be one of the lucky ones?

OUR STORY

With 15 years of experience under its belt, Tomorrowland has become a true master at many a thing. One of those is bringing together not just the best fans, but also the very best artists in the world. On 17 & 18 October this year, Tomorrowland will unite some of their electronic music heroes with the Metropole Symphonic Orchestra during the Amsterdam Dance Event. Two nights in a row, the Orchestra strings together all-time Tomorrowland classics during a three-hour show featuring artists like Armin van Buuren, Netsky and Steve Aoki. With these geniuses from very different ends of the musical spectrum, a magical night is guaranteed. Don’t miss out!

RIDING THE AIRWAVES

MADNESS ON IBIZA

Tomorrowland knows how to bring the Madness – that much we knew. Ibiza is the ultimate party island in the world – that we knew too. Just imagine what happens when you put the two together… Or, actually, don’t just imagine, but go experience it for yourself at Tomorrowland Presents: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike in Ushuaïa Ibiza. The open-air club is transformed into a theme designed by Tomorrowland, with an elaborate stage made to match the anniversary celebration that this year is all about. This synergetic performance by Tomorrowland, DVLM and their friends has taken place every summer since 2017, but this year, the setting, show and music will reach levels no one’s ever experienced before. You’ll want to be a part of this! Tomorrowland Presents: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike takes place every Tuesday from June 18th to September 24th at Ushuaïa Ibiza. 25

Since this year, Tomorrowland has its own radio station by the name of Tomorrowland - One World Radio. Day and night, a team of radio hosts is at your service to provide you with freshly cut DJ sets, a whole lot of interviews, news and live reports from the festival site. Adam K is one of the hosts, and he is more than happy to elaborate on what kind of sorcery they’re going to spread in the airwaves over the course of the weekend: “Tomorrowland - One World Radio was actually launched this year in February, with a live set by Steve Aoki on the exact place where the Mainstage is this weekend. The next big thing we did was Tomorrowland Winter, followed by the Top 1000, the Ibiza 500, special DJ sets by Sunnery James, Claptone... the list just goes on. Tomorrowland - One World Radio was meant to be the celebration of 15 years Tomorrowland, but we’ll simply carry on, 24/7 in the mix. You can find us on the Tomorrowland website, on the FM in Ibiza, DAB+ in Belgium, we’re everywhere. What’s really nice is that we’re a bit of an extended family here. Obviously there’s the presenters, but NERVO’s doing a show, Armin does the weekend kickoff, Salvatore is always calling in on the phone and pretty much every Tomorrowland DJ is just a text away.”

Q-DANCE

WE PLAY HOUSE

From the northern suburbs of Amsterdam comes Q-dance, whose events such as Defqon.1, Qlimax, and X-Qlusive are all centered around the harder styles of electronic dance music. With their events and with Qlimax in particular, Q-dance has sold out a wide range of stadiumsized venues, creating a no-holds-barred atmosphere that will no doubt be recreated at their own little patch of Tomorrowland. If there’s one promoter responsible for the huge and enduring popularity of hardstyle throughout the past decades, it’s probably Q-dance. It’s very exciting, in other words, to see these passionate people bring the biggest names within the harder styles to Boom, from Wildstylez to B-Front and from Frequencerz to Evil Activities.

Bart van Neste aka Red D has become a mainstay in the more underground spheres of Tomorrowland over the years. The name of his record label We Play House gives it all away: Bart is a sucker for house music. With Lady Linn, he has been known to tear dance floors apart as he plays instrumental versions of classic and recognisable house tunes, while the Lady sings the lyrics. Another exciting feature, Maxim Lany is likely to be that one DJ in the WPH crew who you could also imagine playing at a larger stage, bringing his hybrid of house and techno sounds. San Soda, to round off with, is the biggest name on the imprint, and it’s a pleasure to have him on board.

What a golden combination. One of Britain’s most respected DJ/producers, Dave Clarke, and Belgium’s number one underground club, FUSE, join forces to create one of the best-curated techno stages Tomorrowland has seen to date. Dave will no doubt play his minimalistic strand of hard techno, possibly combined with some heavy Detroit electro, while Speedy J collaborator Chris Liebing’s set will no doubt be a little more punishing. Tassilo Ippenberger & Thomas Benedix aka production duo Pan-Pot can go both banging and melodic, so that’ll be a surprise. Berlin’s Rødhåd, then, will close the stage with a mix of loops, reverb-laden dub, percussive grooves and anything uplifting. Tomorrowland may well feel like you’re in Berlin for a couple of hours today.

The Mainstage is kicked off every day with a smooth, long set, helping you ease your way from quiet, magic DreamVille mornings into the pure madness that breaks loose at night. This year, the honour of opening the gates of Tomorrowland comes down again to larger-than-life techno legend Carl Cox. For over thirty years Carl has been a leading name, an establishment in house, rave and techno music. And he has been a Tomorrowland regular for years too, headlining and hosting several of the festival's very biggest stages. Even though he is a top name on most line-ups and thus not used to playing so early in the day, Cox is happy to make an exception for Tomorrowland, just as he did last year. One of the reasons to brave a morning trek to the Holy Grounds for this is the fact that DJs playing Daybreak Sessions are often caught exposing a whole new side of themselves. They display an artistic, musical gusto of that not many - if any! - have heard before. With a three-hour set early on the day, they get the chance to tell a story from the introduction to the everafter. Devoid of all the pressure of keeping the audience right in that pumped-up mesmerizing zone of energy, the music is allowed to blossom and ease its way into your body. Carl Cox' Daybreak Session will make your musical heart beat faster while your brain feasts on an abundance of fresh impressions.

SAM FELDT FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY SEXY BY NATURE | L'ORANGERIE | 18h30 – 20h00

One broken leg can break a lot of hearts. Last year, Dutch DJ/producer Sam Feldt (25) had to cancel his gig on the Mainstage as he was forced to stay at home due to a scooter accident. This year he is back – back in the saddle at his hometown of Amsterdam, as well as on stage worldwide, including two weekends of Tomorrowland. And his star is on the rise, as he is currently scoring a huge hit – 37.5 million streams already – with ‘Post Malone’. It’s about time to get to know this living legend a bit better. Nowadays, there’s no getting around you, but how did your career first get started? “It all began with two regular CD players when I was about eleven years old. I invented my own drive-in show of sorts. In a fully stuffed Seat Marbella, my dad took me to all kinds of parties. I would mix records on those two CD players for hours on end. Every time I saved enough money, I bought new stuff like a smoke machine or strobe. Years later, during a holiday in Albufeira, I saw DJ Billy the Kit perform in discotheque Kiss Club. Sounds dodgy, I know. But back then, when I was seventeen, this performance made a huge impression. From that day on, I knew that this was what I wanted to do in life.” You are an ambassador of sustainable projects such as Plastic Promise and GreenSeat; sustainability is obviously high on your agenda. How did this awareness come about?

“Well, both of my parents are vegetarian hippies. You could say I was raised like that. Unfortunately, my job cannot be done by a Skype videocall. I started to feel like the bad guy because of my flight schedule. And over the last five years, I have seen the world change so much. One time in Vegas, our aircraft could not take off as the landing strip was simply too hot. In China and Indonesia, I saw the effects of environmental pollution, as well. That is when I wanted to take action myself.”

“It all began with two regular CD players” So, what did you do about it? “Small things and bigger things. For example, my rider (the list of gear and food & drinks a DJ requests for their gig – eds.) is completely plastic-free. That means that there should be glasses instead of plastic cups backstage, and that straws and PET are no longer allowed either. I have also exchanged my car for a hybrid model. And I invest in projects in Uganda that offset my CO2 emissions. Instead of cooking over open fires, families there are now purchasing clean stoves.” What to expect of your performance at TML? Will we hear some unreleased tracks? “We have created a whole new live show this summer, which we are constantly finetuning. At Tomorrowland you will hear a lot of new records – expect some club 29

mixes and remixes which I have never played before. Ever since I released my very first track, I’ve worked with one, two, three or four real instruments like saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums, so that’s the sound you can expect.” What does a normal weekend for you look like in, let’s say, July 2019? “Wow, let me think. I’ve done nineteen gigs over the last three weeks. Sometimes it gets pretty hard to remember what you were doing even the day before. Last weekend, I had a show at Airbeat One in Germany. The day before I was at ElectroBeach Festival in France. During summer, things get quite crazy.” And a normal weekend for you when you are not on tour? “I just watched ‘Good Girls’ with my girlfriend on Netflix! A guilty pleasure, but funny. Actually, when I am at home, I’m pretty boring. It’s a strange thing: people think you live a non-stop glamorous life as a professional DJ. But I really just want to live a normal life at home.” You’ve worked with massive stars such as Jeremy Renner, Akon and Rita Ora. If you could collaborate with any person you wanted, who would be on top of your wish list? “Paul McCartney, Jack Johnson and John Mayer. Those are definitely the greats! Who knows what will happen in the future…”

BEBE REXHA

STMPD RCRDS (Lotus) | 22h15 – 23h00 Even though she had mainstream success as early as 2013 – as a songwriter for Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Monster’ – Bebe Rexha’s career didn’t really take off properly until 2016, when she was featured on Martin Garrix’ single ‘In the Name of Love’. Now that she’s starting to get the hang of successful pop music, Rexha naturally wants more, so in 2018 she released her aptly named debut record, ‘Expectations’. Expect banging hit singles such as ‘I’m a Mess’ alongside snippets of her well-known collaborations, in what is set to be a stand-out and invigorating performance.

THESE ARE THE WRITERS OF THE BOOK OF WISDOM

BLACK COFFEE Mainstage

19h50 - 20h50 Durban is arguably the capital of gqom, best described as South Africa’s answer to grime music – but Durban native Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, a.k.a. Black Coffee, decided to take a wholly different musical route. After finishing a major in jazz and further education in music technology in the early 2000s, Maphumulo went on to form an urban soul trio named Shana with three pals. He also slowly started building on the vocal house career he is now famous for, one that evolves around his recognizable vocal-heavy mid- to uptempo dance sound. Having worked with South African legends such as Hugh Masekela as well as international electronic stars like Masters at Work’s Little Louie Vega, Black Coffee has grown to become a producer who avoids afro house cliches. He is instead crafting his own, smooth “afropolitan” house sound of the future. After club gigs all around the world in places like London, Ibiza and Miami, and at smaller Tomorrowland stages in previous years, 2019 is the first time you can witness Black Coffee rocking the Mainstage at Boom. There will be many unforgettable, ecstatic moments to be enjoyed in this set by the biggest name in South African house music. Just make a move to the Mainstage – that’s all you need to do…

OLIVER HELDENS

DJ DIESEL

By the time Rotterdam-born artist Oliver Heldens released his first BBC Essential Mix in 2014, Pete Tong had already dubbed him ‘one of the breakthrough producers of the year’. Heldens walks the thin line between future house, deep house and mainstream dance. If only that were the full recipe, anyone could copy the master – but hell no, Heldens’ magic goes way beyond that. Be sure not to miss this set by the Dutch wonderboy, which will no doubt include releases by his pals Shermanology and Chocolate Puma on his very own record label, Heldeep Records.

Once a world-famous basketball player, now a DJ almost as famous! Is that a unique career move or what? With his 2.16 m (7’1”) and 147 kg (324 lb), former Los Angeles Lakers player Shaquille O’Neal was one of the tallest and heaviest people to ever play the NBA competition. So you can imagine that when this man rocks the stage, he tears it right down, front to back. DJ Diesel plays tunes you would expect a big man named after a highly flammable fuel to play: heavy EDM bangers and lots of drops, with a touch of not-so-subtle trap. You guessed it, this is party time.

AE:THER

NOTOIR

Diynamic (Garden of Madness) 12h30-13h30

Antwerp-based DJ, producer, promotor and all-round music aficionado Notoir is a very wellknown name and face in the city’s ever so booming house scene. He’s a resident DJ at Club Vaag and as a founder of Klank Music he has brought artists like Konstantin Sibold, Martin Buttrich and Magda to a variety of different locations, clubs and festivals in and around the city by the river Scheldt. It’s his third time at Tomorrowland and he’ll be playing the very first tunes of the day at Solomun’s Diynamic Stage at the Garden of Madness alongside other big guns like Magit Cacoon and Adriatique.

SOLOMUN

Diynamic (Garden of Madness) 21h30 – 23h30 Party-heads among famous DJs, we can all name a few. Ricardo Villalobos is a famous one, there’s Prins Thomas, always with a bottle of whiskey on his side, and in recent years, Diynamic Records’ label boss Solomun has been added to the list. Inseparable from his sunnies, the Luxembourg-based DJ is used to playing very long after-hours sets and will likely give you a little peek into that world during his set on Tomorrowland 2019’s opening day. Musically, Solomun is a house head of the evangelical type; he’s converted quite a few ravers to the genre.

Crosstown Rebels Present Get Lost (Core) | 18h30 - 19h30 A very unique voice in today’s techno landscape, Italian producer Ae:ther is currently gaining a lot of traction among music heads, due to his otherworldly use of synthesizers that sound very retro and very futuristic at once. Call it future vintage music, if you will. One thing is for sure: Ae:ther is set to cause a lot of dizziness on stage with his shattering synth sounds, which might literally knock you off your feet if you get too close to the speakers. Growing up listening to early Detroit techno artists such as the Underground Resistance crew as well as Autechre and Brian Eno, the producer moved to London in his twenties, where he befriended fellow futurist producers Bicep and Crosstown Rebels’ Damian Lazarus. He then went on to release on both Crosstown Rebels and Afterlife, a label with sought-after releases by fellow producers of underground techno such as ROD aka Benny Rodrigues as well as label bosses Tale of Us. Ae:ther’s performance at the Core stage will be all live, without any elements of DJing, so get yourself ready by checking out some of his work online – it’ll surely pay off as you’re likely to actually hear these tracks during his performance. Top tracks

THE CHAINSMOKERS Mainstage | 23h50 – 00h50

It takes some audience love for an artist to receive more song streams than the planet has inhabitants. Not many stars rose to fame as fast as The Chainsmokers from New York did, and if you love catchy, easygoing, EDM-style power pop, then obviously, you’re not going to want to miss this show. Get ready for on-stage performances of all of their massive hits including ‘Closer’, ‘Something Just Like This’, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, ‘Who Do You Love’ and many more. Get your pop fix with The Chainsmokers, it’s a total no-brainer!

include ‘Raven’, ‘Afterlife’ and ‘Fryhide’. Enjoy.

FJAAK (LIVE)

Kozzmozz (Cage) | 18h00 - 19h00 When do you ever hear of a techno band – a bunch of guys who get together and jam and jam and jam until they find the perfect, hammering club tracks? Meet Felix Wagner and Aaron Röbig, who created a bunch of true dance floor beauties together with former band mate Kevin Kozick, who’s only recently left the group. So what is this live performance by Felix and Aaron likely to sound like? Well, if you bring key words such as heavy kicks, chopped-up synths and subtle breaks into the mix, you get the jacking club music that FJAAK are known for. Guaranteed heavy times on the floor.
