PEOPLE OF TOMORROW,

I

A WORLD OF WISDOM LIES IN WAIT!

magination is not just a spontaneous power; it must be nourished, it depends on stories and tales, feeds off experience and memory. To imagine a better world, one needs to live and breathe examples, other worlds, rich with colourful characters and peace and beatitude. And that, friends, is why you are here: to learn, to be imbued with stories and wisdom. You stand at the doorway to a

library that has long been hidden to the world, archiving its narratives with quiet resolve. But now, at the fifteenth Gathering of Tomorrows, the library is about to open up and reveal itself – for the Book of Wisdom herself has woken op, and ordained that all should participate in the tales she has collected. You will see, hear and feel the might of the Elixir of Life, of the Kingdom of Melodia,

MELODIC ADVENTURES

of the frolicking Amicorum Spectaculum. There’s just one night’s sleep left, bibliophile friends, before you’ll pour into that world of books, freely exploring its myths and legends. For now, cherish the tingling sense of impending bliss, treasure the knowledge that before long, you will walk the hallowed halls of Wisdom. Tomorrow will be a grand day indeed.

When one chapter closes, another one opens. Amidst that turmoil, People of Tomorrow,

With stage hosts ranging from Star Warz pres. Critical Music to Diymamic, from a Q-dance stage to acts such as The Chainsmokers and Armin van Buuren; the Book of Wisdom is full of enchanting melodies. What else is there to inhale? Well, Eric Prydz is bringing his brand-new Holosphere show, in which he will be absorbed by a three-dimensional holograms and an out-of-this-world spectacle. There will be an orchestral EDM performance in the form of the Symphony of Unity, urban sounds and old-school vinyl sets. However far from home you choose to stray this weekend, know that what you will experience is a new adventure full of musical storytelling. Are you ready to sing along to the next chapter in the Book of Wisdom?

It is our wisdom you can borrow. Your journey will commence with heavy rays of sunshine. Remember to stock up on sunscreen, look after each other, and wear the warmth in your heart. Spread the love and drink lots of water to keep a cool soul!

EMBRACE THE BRACELET Your festival bracelet is the place where you store Tomorrowland’s very own currency: Pearls. With your Pearls, you can buy all the Holy Grounds have to offer, from food to fashion. Pearls are added straight onto your bracelet, meaning they’re quite literally always at hand – as long as you top up, of course! You can do so both online and on site:

Use your Pearls effectively by always wearing your bracelet around your right wrist. Don’t put it on upside down and keep the Tomorrowland logo facing forward so that it can be scanned easily. That logo ensures entry to Tomorrowland and DreamVille, and it is where all your Pearls are kept!

Dear friends, It's not safe to take drugs. Take care of yourself and each other.

Online

Go to your Tomorrowland Account in the App and click ‘Cashless Top-Up’, using either Visa, Mastercard, Bancontact or iDeal. Adding Pearls through your online account ensures that your unspent Pearls are automatically refunded after the festival.

-Tomorrowland

On Site

You can also top up at several physical locations throughout DreamVille and on Tomorrowland. The booths accept Visa, Mastercard and cash. If you choose to go through the physical top-up system, unspent Pearls can only be refunded by filling out a form.

LET'S GO LIVE

Do you have friends or family who couldn’t make it to the biggest celebration of the year with you? Tell them to cancel all their weekend plans regardless! Every year, People of Tomorrow from all over the world unite in their shared love for music, and not all of them travel to Belgium to do so. The Tomorrowland livestream is accessible from every nook and cranny, so wherever your peers are on this beautiful planet, send them to tomorrowland.com for their share of the action!

IBIZA MADNESS

Tomorrowland knows how to bring the Madness – that much we knew. Ibiza is the ultimate party island in the world – that we knew too. Just imagine what happens when you put the two together… Or, actually, don’t just imagine, but go experience it for yourself at Tomorrowland Presents: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike in Ushuaïa Ibiza. The open-air club is transformed into a theme designed by Tomorrowland, with an elaborate stage made to match the anniversary celebration that this year is all about. This synergetic performance by Tomorrowland, DVLM and their friends has taken place every summer since 2017, but this year, the setting, show and music will reach levels no one’s ever experienced before. You’ll want to be a part of this! Tomorrowland Presents: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike takes place every Tuesday from June 18th to September 24th at Ushuaïa Ibiza. 7

HUMMING

THE HYMN Embracing Tomorrowland Winter

In March 2019, a new magical adventure in the mountains of Alpe d'Huez commenced, as The Hymn of the Frozen Lotus called us to all-new Holy Grounds for a pioneering adventure in the snow. Over 120 nationalities travelled to the French Alps, and while some were avid skiers, some had never braved the slopes before. Some journeyed for days, whereas others were born in these mountains. All of them had one thing in common, however: they became Winter’s first People of Tomorrow. The trip up to Huez already provided adventurers with a sneak peek of the incredible scenery they would be surrounded with for the next few days. But that wasn't the only thing of beauty that the mountains had to offer. Traditionally, all travellers are welcomed to the Holy Grounds at The Gathering. At Tomorrowland Winter, though, the kick-off was celebrated differently with The Welcome, where the party started on Tuesday in the villages of Auris, Vaujany and Oz. Afrojack: “It's so much more fun than boarding by myself. I need an invite for next year already!” While The Welcome featured artists such as Afrojack, Double Pleasure, Bassjackers and Nico Morano, the snowy Holy Grounds kept their secrets for a few more days. This gave revelers some time to explore the slopes first. Upon their return, they were happy to discover that some stages were already open: the Moose Bar blasted hits all day and night, welcoming DJs such as Thierry and DJ Mr. E. On Tuesday, the Orangerie, The Garden of Madness and Eden joined the party, hosting artists such as Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano and Henri PFR.

Block your schedule Do you want to experience Winter like never before? Block your schedule for 14-21 March 2020!

On Wednesday, the Madness properly started as the Frozen Lotus opened up, allowing all to experience her wintery bliss in full effect. Climbing to great heights, surrounded by rolling hills and blue skies, her Hymn was answered by many great artists such as Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Afrojack and Armin van Buuren. Many of them were spotted shredding snow before or after their sets, sliding down the slopes with friends and fans alike, enjoying the fresh mountain air. Dimitri Vegas:

Ticket info and pre-registration will be available at tomorrowland.com starting mid-August.

“Hats off for Tomorrowland Winter!”

Those mountains harboured more mysteries to be unravelled. Over a dozen ski and chair lifts provided access to areas beyond instant reach. There was music to be heard from La Taburle, where Bassjackers and Da Tweekaz graced the decks, all the way up to the Love Stage,

88

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

accessible only to those who navigated the slopes and took the right turns. Then, it was onwards to Amicorum Spectaculum, where festive mountaineers were welcomed in style by a band of performers led by their pater familias, the extravagant Circus Director. The People of Tomorrow themselves are known for their fabulous fashion sense, but these fire-eaters, jugglers and dancers provided a whole new level of altitude-ready apparel. Robert Falcon: “Despite the snow storm, everyone was in a party mood. Amazing!” Experienced adventurers could take the last lift up to the Top of the Mountain to conquer the Tunnel, a black ski route that only the bravest of daredevils completed. A daunting descent down over 2000 metres of slippery slopes is guaranteed to make you thirsty, and fortunately, La Cabane, a short ride down from Amicorum Spectaculum, was open to the droughty all day, every day. Salvatore Ganacci: “People have a lot of clothes on, so they move differently, which is fun to see when they dance. I love it.” Before the slopes closed, a mandatory stop at Signal 2108 for a late lunch was inevitable. Local cuisine in Alpe d'Huez had a lot to offer to the new international guests, so no adventurer ever had to go hungry. Felt peckish anyway? Besides many varieties of world-famous cheese fondue, prepared by a world famous chef right on the spot, there were plenty more options. The name Brasa might make your mouth water if you've been to Tomorrowland before. Winter Brasa grilled up a storm with snow gloves on, warming the hearts and tummies of the frozen. Goldfox: “Tomorrowland Winter combines my favuorite things, nature and music.” The Hymn of the Frozen Lotus has enchanted many, and Winter has been locked in our hearts forever. The journey of a lifetime came to an end, but will continue again soon. Pack your bags and embark on this next adventure to Unite Forever in the snow!

ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE MARKETPLACE

If DreamVille is your home for the week, the Marketplace will be one of your most frequented stops. Whether you’re on the hunt for croissants in the early morning, just passing through between dancing and resting, meeting with a friend for coffee or getting glammed out permanently or temporarily: the Marketplace will be the heart of your temporary hometown. Trace back your footsteps on Sunday eve and you’ll see: all roads lead to and through the Marketplace. To help you get started, here are four shops you’ll want to stop by this weekend!

FOREVER YOURS

THE RECYCLE CLUB

GLAM THE CAMP

TREAT YOURSELF

A new addition to the Marketplace this year is the Tattoo Shop. Let the artists magically move the ink from the Book onto your skin, to imprint you with the Wisdom forever. Remember this weekend for the rest of your life and get your own permanent souvenir right here!

Looking for inspiration? The Recycle Club shows you their best practice in taking care of Mama Earth. They can teach you all about using your Recycle Kits best, and their Club House displays the things that can be done with recycled materials. They will undoubtedly motivate you to Love Tomorrow a little more each day!

Brought flags to pimp your tent, party lights to guide your friends home, and bunting to heighten the spirits? Be a bit of a shame if you forgot any essentials like an airbed or a flashlight, wouldn’t it… But rest assured, the Camping Store will save your day (and night)!

What’s a holiday without a daily bakery run? Take turns in getting a fresh loaf or yummy pastries, and don’t forget to pick up the Tomorrowland Today newspaper as well! While your friends fix coffee, you’ll get to choose which breakfast you’ll treat them (and yourself, of course!) to today.

BURPEES & BEVERAGES ‘Make yourself at home’ is the motto of your stay at DreamVille. Doing so means incorporating your daily rituals in this new, temporary setting: fetching breakfast at the Marketplace, sharing coffee with your neighbours and working out a couple times a week. For the latter, make your way to the gym! Hit the treadmill solo, join group lessons of all sorts or gather for an early morning run with your fellow fanatics. Looking to take it somewhat easier? There are yoga classes as well as a cocktail bar. Just don’t drink and downward-dog, stick to ‘bend before beverage’ instead!

MORNING QUICKIE

If that title made your mind run wild, get your body ready to join in. This year, ‘running wild’ is part of the official programme. Every morning at 10h00, all the crazy energetic gather at the Gym for a communal run. There’s a mild option (3 kilometres) and an intermediate one (5 kilometres): you decide how quickly you want to get this over with.

REFRESH YOURSELF Woke up this morning realising you’re not 16 anymore? Nothing much to do to turn back time, but plenty to feel younger again. Break a sweat: Let your body expel the not-so-great leftovers from last night by working yourself into a sweat. It gets your endorphins running, which will make you instantly happier, and clean you up from the inside out. Hydrate: Water, water, water! Before, during and after, preferably. Just keep drinking this see-through magic potion all day. Chill: Take a deep breath and land with both feet back on Momma Earth. Take a yoga class to tune back into your inner wisdom. This can really help you shift perspective from ‘rough morning’ to ‘another brand new day’, so let your inner sun rise and shine!

NO CHOICE BUT TO CHILL

Want to be active, but just a little less so? The Chill Out Area offers the perfect combo between a leisurely game of volley and a serious game of food truck testing. This is also where you’ll find the Balance Area, with two domes sporting the more mellow activities like yoga classes. Can’t choose between a tennis match and a breakfast cocktail? There is no need to make choices so early in the day. Be chill, as here, anything goes as long as it feels good! Chill Out Area Thursday: 12h00 – 02h00 Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 07h30 – 16h00, 00h00 – 03h00 Friday 11h00: Kung Fu with Laidback Luke

UNWIND & RECOVER

The Madness may have only just begun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t admit to yourself it’s time for a bit of recovery first. There’s plenty of artists performing today, so allow yourself a bit of time to explore the Recovery Area for some much deserved self-care. It’s all about priorities, after all! Get rid of any and all negative energy in the boxing ring, where you can take boxing classes to relieve the stress of travelling. Meet likeminded individuals in one of the many group classes, because isn’t self-care all the more effective when shared? All that communal energy will surely get your blood pumping – and have you dancing happily through the rest of the day. Don’t hesitate, and let your body and mind make most of your recovery time! BE KIND TO YOURSELF • Be conscious about what you consume. • Make sure to hydrate; DreamVille days can be very hot, and sleep is often not a priority. So drink lots of water! • Don’t drink too much, though. More than 3 litres can be dangerous! • Eat healthily; fruits and veggies will make you feel much better than a burger. • Detox with fruit juices at the Marketplace or Farmhouse. • Relax with morning yoga at the Chill Out area. • Get all your energy back with a gym session! The Gym is located between the Farmhouse and Marketplace. • Join for a morning jog; meeting point is at The Farmhouse every day at 10 a.m.

SAVE WATER AND ENERGY • Be careful with your water usage; think about your shower time. • Choose vegetarian or vegan options instead of meat, chicken or fish.

HOW TO CAMP CONSCIOUSLY To truly love Tomorrow is to be kind to Mother Nature, each other and yourself. This checklist contains tips and tricks that will help you live in harmony at DreamVille , and will make your life’s journey more in tune with Nature afterwards. Can you tick off the entire list at the end of your stay? We know you can!

ENJOY YOUR STAY!

RESPECT EACH OTHER AND DON’T ACT WITHOUT CONSENT • Respect each other’s integrity. • Make each other feel safe. • Make sure everything you do is consensual. This means there is a mutual agreement between you and the other party to engage in interaction. • Help your neighbours at DreamVille to set up their tent, They will be friends for a lifetime!

LEAVE NO TRACE • Recycle waste and materials in the right recycling bins. • Tidy up while you’re having fun; there are Recycle Points and recycling bags available all around you, and this small gesture of goodwill costs you nothing. • If something is broken, don’t leave it on the grass for others to clean – put it in the right bin. • Bring everything back home with you, including what you don’t see… like tent pegs!

15

DON’T WASTE FOOD • Buy only what you really want to consume. • Give leftovers to someone who is still hungry. • Don’t bring drinks you can’t keep cold and won’t drink warm.

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

The People of Tomorrow stand for something much greater and deeper than one weekend of unity. You reaffirm the world’s belief in a better future, in a better Tomorrow, because you care. As People of Tomorrow, the unity that you share amongst each other translates into how you view the rest of the world, and that’s exactly

GENERATION TOMORROW

how the first Music & Arts School (co-founded by Cunina) opened its doors in Nepal last year: entirely funded by your generous gifts. This year, you can support the Tomorrowland Foundation in their educational quest once more, contributing to a newly added project: Mobile School. Both the Music & Arts School and Mobile School share a focus o educating young ones around the globe. Few things make as much sense as the People of Tomorrow supporting the generation of Tomorrow, after all!

One of the things that characterize the People of Tomorrow is their ever-positive attitude to life. And that’s exactly what it’s all about when you want to make the world a better place, according to Arnoud Raskin, founder of Mobile School. “What binds Mobile School and the Tomorrowland Foundation,” Arnoud explains, “is our shared focus on the positive side of the world.”

Looking at the People of Tomorrow, it’s quicly apparent that they think of the world as a beautiful place filled with talent, creativity and positivity. And this goes beyond just the weekend they spend together in Belgium – even though it’s easy to imagine them as just a bunch of strangers randomly come together. “In reality, there’s such a strong sense of belonging between the People of Tomorrow. They share a strong, positive identity. And that’s exactly what a lot of children on the street are lacking,” Arnoud says. MOBILE SCHOOL Going through Design School in the late nineties, Arnoud was the odd one out. For their final project, the students had one year to spend on a problem-solving product. Instead of choosing a multinational for a sponsor, like most classmates did, Arnoud did not want to follow suit in measuring ‘success rates’ by sales rates. He wanted to make a meaningful impact. “I left for Latin America to get to know the needs of children living on the streets. You have to really understand the context before you can create a product that can make a difference.” This trip and graduation project gave life to Mobile School, Arnoud’s foundation that brings education to the street, rather than taking children from the street and forcing them into a school. 16

“The People of Tomorrow make for such a great example because of their ever-positive attitude to life.”

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

Tomorrowland Foundation Music & Arts School (by Cunina), Nepal

The core vision of Mobile School is all about recognising how the street can teach positive values, like overcoming challenges and creating opportunities. “Our Mobile Schools turn the street into a positive environment. When we put up shop, we’re very visible, we literally teach on the sidewalk,” Arnoud explains. “This is much more effective in establishing a positive sense of self than taking children somewhere else, essentially telling them that the street – which, for better or for worse, is their home! – is a ‘bad’ place.”

BACK TO SCHOOL If you are staying at DreamVille, look out for the mobile Tomorrowland Foundation teams. You can find them walking around on Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 10h00 and 14h00, and they’re pushing a Mobile School to show you exactly how it works. Feel inspired by this ‘back-to-school’ session? This is your chance to contribute to the Tomorrowland Foundation, starting from as little as 2 Pearls. Make Tomorrow’s generation proud!

The Mobile Schools are extendable blackboards on wheels, which come with more than 250 educational panels covering themes from reading and writing to creative and social skills. Once a Mobile School arrives in an area with street children, the blackboard slides open to create a two-sided 6-metre long educational tool, helping the street educators to interact with the children. “Our teachers are very proud to do what they do,” Arnoud glows. “That really helps with the educational process. It gives the children a positive example to look up to.” CHANGING PERSPECTIVE Now think about this: “Just imagine,” Arnoud introduces his scenario, “we drop you in the middle of a city you’ve never been and then take away your passport, your mobile phone, and your credit card. How would you make it through the week? These kids aren’t ‘poor little children’, like some would make them out to be, they’re actually incredibly resourceful and resilient!” And that is exactly what the Tomorrowland Foundation builds upon: a positive outlook on making the world a better place. It’s about changing perspective, about taking the sense of community from the Holy Grounds to instil it around the world. The People of Tomorrow already know what a feeling of ‘togetherness’ can do – just walk around the festival grounds with your arms wide open, and someone will hug you right back. Who wouldn’t want to translate this feeling to a bigger scale? “Feeling like you belong is one of the most important factors of selfdevelopment,” Arnoud elaborates. “It’s crucial in shaping a sense of identity. If you grow up without a healthy social context to mirror yourself to, you’ll look for that sense of belonging elsewhere – in bad places, perhaps.” In order to help kids find their place, Mobile School has 52 schools in 26 countries, from as close by as Central Europe to the very southern tip of Chile. With your support, Mobile School will be able to continue to expand. “We’re aiming to open five new locations in countries such as Haiti, Kenya, Poland, Togo and Lithuania,” Arnoud enthuses. Both Mobile School and the Tomorrowland Foundation Music & Arts School (by Cunina) have a strong focus on the creative component in education. Creativity is an essential part of identity formation, after all. It is as Arnoud says: “If we would all learn to see each other from a point of individual strength, appreciate the things everyone can do and make, it would make such an impact on human self-confidence. Everyone can consciously change perspective to a positive one.”

BELGIUM 2019

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

OUR STORY

With 15 years of experience under their belt, Tomorrowland has become a true master at many a thing. One of those is bringing together not just the best fans, but also the very best artists in the world. On 17 & 18 October this year, Tomorrowland will unite some of their electronic music heroes with the Metropole Symphonic Orchestra during the Amsterdam Dance Event. Two nights in a row, the Orchestra strings together all-time Tomorrowland classics during a three-hour show featuring artists like Armin van Buuren, Netsky and Steve Aoki. With these geniuses from very different ends of the musical spectrum, a magical night is guaranteed. Don’t miss out!

UNITE ALL OVER EUROPE

UNITE with Tomorrowland welcomes the most spectacular group of entertainers in the universe to parties all around Europe. The Amicorum Spectaculum touch down in Athens, Malta, Porto and Barcelona to host a mix of live streams from Tomorrowland and local live performances. During this weekend, some of the line-up’s biggest names will fly in with the band of entertaining friends. There’s NERVO on stage in Barcelona, Martin Solveig in Porto, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano in Malta and Armin van Buuren in Athens. And that’s only just to mention a few!

LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR

Tomorrowland takes place every summer in the small Belgian town of Boom: a town where people live and work, where children grow up, where families gather to enjoy summer barbecues and where life happens like everywhere else. Try to keep this in mind on and off site this weekend; love thy neighbours, and they will love you right back!

TRAIN HARD, PARTY HARDER

They say getting your adrenaline pumping actually gives you more energy. While it’s up to you to decide if you feel energetic enough to bust a sweat this weekend, there’s a place to be in case you want to go for it. The Gym Area at the heart of DreamVille hosts an array of professional Matrix Fitness equipment. Go at it solo to work on cardio or strength, or try one of the many dynamic group classes offered every day. There’s even a Workout of the Day zone, where you can join communal workouts throughout the day. As they’ll happily show you, their mantra is ‘Train hard, party harder!’ 18

EXPERIENCE

THE MUSIC

You’ve all come here for one core reason: to experience the music. If you want to be able to continue that love for music for a lifetime to come, you’ll want to protect your precious ears very carefully. The BLOX Xperience Music earplugs have been especially designed with the People of Tomorrow in mind. And better yet: this year, their Super Limited Edition packaging is one you’ll want to treasure as much as the earplugs themselves! The metal box is crafted to match the Book of Wisdom, a real gadget you will want to keep. The BLOX earplugs are available for 13 Pearls at the BLOX shop at DreamVille, the BLOX shop close to the Freedom stage and at the TML By Tomorrowland Boutique. 19

Getting an invite to a party you desperately want to go to is one of the best feelings in the world. And it’s even better when someone put a lot of effort into making you one! The entrance bracelets to Tomorrowland are received with open hands and hearts every year, but the Book of Wisdom Returns invite was a stunner unlike anything else in the festival’s 15-year history. With an actual 160-page hardcover book, written by Irish author Sarah Maria Griffin and illustrated by Belgian artist Patrick Cornelis, this year’s story got a far deeper layer.

TOMORROWLAND TODAY

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

BELGIUM 2019

Young, wild, free and loving, that’s what sums up the People of Tomorrow. All of which translates into their choice of outfit: you’ll find some of the most colourful and authentic-looking spirits on the Holy Grounds each summer. Of course, one surefire way to display your pedigree as one of the People of Tomorrow – be it here, at the festival, or back home – is by donning some items from the official TML by Tomorrowland collection. And what a gem this summer’s collection is! Whether you’re a first-timer here or you’ve returned like the Book of Wisdom, chances are that you’re familiar with the TML by Tomorrowland collections from past years. It’s not a rare sight to see aficionados across the globe proudly display their love for Tomorrowland with these items – and of course, there are some new ones up for grabs this year.

SPIT FIRE THIS SUMMER The brand-new collection takes its inspiration from the most iconic elements of 15 years of Tomorrowland, celebrating the festival’s anniversary with fresh and playful attire, sometimes referencing Tomorrowland’s imagery subtly, sometimes boldly displaying it. Three main pillars within the collection ensure there’s something to suit everyone’s style: Flourish is ready to wear for all the bohemian blossoms, whereas the Tomorrowland Icons will recognise the strength in rocking the legend, and only the most fiery personalities will feel fully comfortable in the Rosegarden collectibles. Ready to bag yourself a true Tomorrowland outfit? Find the collection at the TML by Tomorrowland Boutiques on site or, should you want to expand your wardrobe further after the weekend, year-round via store.tomorrowland.com!

Flourish Let Your Personality Bloom This collection is for the wild and free spirits, who feel most at ease in breezy bohemian attire that flows as they twirl to the music. It’s only when beautifully blooming personalities try on these flowerpatterned outfits that this summer collection really blossoms. The Flourish collection is designed with dancing in mind: create your own unrestrictive festival look with the crop top and a skirt or flared flourish pants, or slip on a comfortable dress instead.

Iconic When Classics Become Legends How could we celebrate a 15th anniversary without dedicating at least part of the collection to the iconic imagery that makes Tomorrowland? Featuring unique details such as embroidery, tie-dye fabrics, satin prints and woven patches, you’ll proudly wear the Icons. Take the Amare Tee for instance, with its celebration of the steel-winged bird - or the Sketch Tee, which shows not just the creative process and symbolism of the Icon. These are for the unabashed Tomorrowland lovers!

Rosegarden Unleash Your Inner Dragon She’s the beast that awes everyone who meets her, a benevolent guardian full of smoke, sound and fury. An ode to Tomorrowland’s magical Rosegarden and its gigantic moving dragon, also known as the most beautiful festival stage in the world, this part of the collection is designed for you to unleash your inner dragon. Wear her on your hoodie, as a badge, or anything in between – and don’t forget spit fire about everything you’re passionate about.

PLEDGE YOUR ALLEGIANCE Want to look and feel the part? Show us or tell us which of the collection’s three pillars would suit you best and win a TML by Tomorrowland surprise! Make sure to be as creative as possible and send your story or picture to today@tomorrowland.com. FIND YOUR STYLE Are you ready to be transformed from the outside in? Look for the official TML by Tomorrowland Boutiques on your map. They are located at the main info point on the court by the day entrance, behind the Mainstage, near the exit towards DreamVille, and on the Marketplace at DreamVille. 23

PLAN(T) A BREAK

For the People of Tomorrow, this is nothing you didn’t already know: plant-based is the new black. And who else to trust with your favourite meal of the day than Alpro, the proven pro when it comes to healthy and environmentally-friendly goodies? Your tummy surely knows the answer to this question already! At the Farmhouse, right on DreamVille, you’ll find the Alpro breakfast bar, the place where you can feast your taste buds on a beautiful breakfast bowl with fresh fruits and granola. If that doesn’t make you feel whole again, surely, a smoothie vitamin boost will do the trick. For that extra shot of energy, the Farmhouse has the best coffees, freshly brewed by the baristas. Still feeling hot, hot, hot from dancing all night? Get a ready-made iced coffee to go in one of three different flavours. Be kind to your body and to Mother Nature: plan a plant-based break for breakfast!

HAIR FIX

Woke up feeling less than gorgeous today? Take a deep breath, tune back in to your inner fabulous self… or admit defeat and move on to the hair salon, because let’s be honest, sometimes we all just need a little extra oomph. The Sebastian Salon is situated at the festival grounds next to the tattoo shop (make sure you don’t get those two mixed up in the early a.m.!). Here, hair stylists are eagerly waiting to work their magic with glitters, flowers, shiny accessories and braiding skills you’ve never seen before. No need to book ahead, be welcome from 12h00 18h00!

LIVE: TOMORROWLAND - ONE WORLD RADIO

Up and running since this celebratory year is Tomorrowland - One World Radio, a digital radio and content platform. The platform plays exclusive tracks, unique mixes by the biggest DJs, new releases and, of course, the most iconic livesets from 15 years of Tomorrowland. You can tune in via tomorrowland.com or through the Tomorrowland App, or you can drop by the studio itself this weekend! Every festival day will see another a live broadcast from Tomorrowland - One World Radio’s campsite abode. Find their studio at the DreamVille Marketplace, and don’t forget to give the DJs a thumbs-up while you’re there.

MORE THAN JUST A SHIRT

You may have seen them already: the ‘Happy to Help You’ crew ready to assist at DreamVille and, as of tomorrow, Tomorrowland itself. From this year onwards, that happiness isn’t just limited to the service they offer – it’s a part of the very clothes they wear. In cooperation with Urban Fibres and local Indian organisation Grameena Vikas Kendram, Tomorrowland has developed an entirely new, sustainable production chain for crew T-shirts. They are made with fair treatment for local cotton farmers and organic farming methods. A new re-use system ensures they are never thrown away, and once they’re worn out, they are recycled into jeans. Think of that when you see the crew, and you’ll surely be smiling!

INSTA-FAME

He's here, he's there, he's everywhere! But where is that, exactly? You won't know until you know. And when you do, it's up to you to ask him for a photo. Mysterious miniature People of Tomorrow notoriously show up around the festival every year, ready to photobomb your festi-selfie. While Bram here might say he hasn’t much time, don't let that mislead you: he's ready for insta-fame whichever way. Send your selfie with Bram to today@tomorrowland.com! 25

APERTO RESTAURANT (BY MELIEFSTE)

This year, a new restaurant enters the magic grounds of Tomorrowland: MESA. A sister spot of the new Antwerp-based restaurant, MESA offers different flavours from all corners of the world. Made with ingredients that come from passionate farmers and producers and prepared with respect for the traditional ways of cooking, you can taste the love MESA’s chef puts into every dish. It’s one of those places where you’ll want to over-order, just so you can share and try between you and your friends. Find the restaurant located in the tent next to the Cage entrance.

Young chef Thijs Meliefste doesn’t just have the loveliest last name (it translates to ‘Mylove’ in Dutch), he’s also all about loving his profession. Incredibly hard-working, he made his Restaurant Meliefste grow to world fame in just a few years. At the Aperto Restaurant, Meliefste’s menu is a great introduction to the culinary adventure of high dining. Enjoy a three-course meal with a sweet bite to end and views on the Mainstage, and let Thijs Meliefste’s view on top-notch food surprise you in the best possible ways. Find the Aperto Restaurant at the Mainstage, on top of the hill, in the centre tent.

BRASA

They were here last year, they melted the snow of Winter and now they’re back again: the real grillmasters of Brasa! Choose between meat, fish or cheese (yep, a barbecue place that is veggiefriendly!) and a wide range of tastes. Try the Tomahawk steak, chomp down on their fresh gambas or let the gooey burrata melt on your tongue as it melts your heart. All dishes are prepared on the Ofyr grill, and pair perfectly with a cold glass of wine. You can find the BRASA restaurant as well as their food stand on the terrace close to the LEAF stage.

FARMHOUSE

For all who have temporarily moved into DreamVille for the weekend, the Farmhouse is the place to be at any time of day. Boasting many different food stands, everyoneat the Farmhouse has one thing in common: they all stay close to their origins. When it comes to food, this means fresh chicken on the grill, fruit straight from the orchards and local bacon for breakfast. Come here for a beautiful breakfast, stay to lounge and lunch and return after a wild night for a late burger to end the day on a juicy note.

B-EAT

GELATERIA

The vibrant B-EAT restaurant returns once again to Tomorrowland 2019 to celebrate the 15th anniversary with a celebration party! Presented by Tastes of the World chefs and bartenders, it’s all one big surprise, with one certainty: they will serve up some of the best food and music! B-EAT is all about matching consumptions to beats, with DJ’s playing even as the food is served. You can find B-EAT behind the Mainstage at the big food court, on the upper floor next to the Belgian Beers bar.

Looking to satisfy your sweet tooth? Consider making your way to the Gelateria. Belgian summers might not be the most reliable when it comes to keeping temperatures in the tropical range, but you can never go wrong with a cone of ice cream. You’ll want to lick it now, lick it good with the vast array of flavours on offer here – they offer twice as many options as last year. Don’t forget to try their waffles as well (when in Belgium…!).

KEEP IT SAFE, ENJOY TOMORROW

octors go to parties too, as evidenced by Ken Dewitte, who goes to Tomorrowland every year as a visitor. This year, he’s looking forward to seeing Netsky most. But Ken isn’t just any old music fan: he is also an emergency doctor at Antwerp University Hospital, where he treats people who need acute help, including those who are adversely affected by drug use. Here, the doctor/DJ-lover shares his ideas about his practice, explains some of the risks involved, and explains how to keep an eye out for your friends.

Tomorrowland is one of the most happy and positive places in the world, and it’s seemingly difficult not to have a good time. “That’s most easily done when you keep yourself out of the danger zone,” says Dewitte. “Drug taking is a risk that’s not worth taking, and many people don’t realize you don’t have to binge-use in order to put yourself in danger. Alcohol has its dark sides too, but cocaine, MDMA/ecstasy and other hard drugs are harder to dose. Everybody knows you won’t die after three standard drinks, but class A party drugs can cause strokes, heart attacks and heart rhythm disorders, even after taking very small amounts.”

impossible. Dewitte adds to this that for young and inexperienced people from abroad, dosing can be another issue. “Strengths of substances may differ locally, so relatively small amounts of a drug are likely to affect the body quite strongly.”

As a doctor, Dewitte has been in many situations where desperate friends brought a victim into the hospital, overcome by feelings of guilt. “They often say that he or she normally never takes drugs, and they regret even bringing up the subject of taking drugs before heading out. Apart from general medical treatment, we usually cool down patients with ice when they’re overheated, which is a common symptom. It works in some occasions, but in others it doesn’t. That feeling of powerlessness when you can’t help a young and previously healthy person is one of the saddest things. That’s why one of the things I always suggest to people who do want to take drugs is that they keep it to themselves, without trying to convince others to join. You will never forgive yourself if a friend dies because you’ve suggested for him or her to take drugs.”

Things to look out for when you realize your friends have been taking drugs include decreased levels of responsiveness, wobbly legs, a desire to lie down, an inability to think straight and, in some cases, drowsiness. It is also important to keep track of how much water your friend drinks, says Dewitte. “Too little is no good. If someone has a dry mouth or dry, chapped lips, that’s a bad sign. But too much is no good either. If you see someone drinking abnormally high amounts of water, bring them to the medical team on site. They’ll give them some salts to help recovery. Lastly, it is absolutely essential not to let shame determine what you tell the doctors. I can’t stress this enough – you can safely tell the doctors exactly what you or your friend took, there will be no bad consequences for you. But the doctors can only help you properly if you’re honest.”

Love people, don’t take drugs

One of the reasons drug use is particularly dangerous is that severe injuries can be caused by inverse circumstances. “When taking drugs, there is a danger of dehydration, but also of overhydration. If you drink too much water, the body’s salt levels are thrown out of balance, leading to potentially lifethreatening situations. Another potential cause of harm, even with limited intake of drugs, is a heightened level of adrenaline. This causes one’s blood vessels to narrow and one’s heart rate to go up, leading to many potentially deadly scenarios.” People coming to visit Tomorrowland from abroad run an additional, serious risk, says Dewitte. “People don’t tend to bring drugs on the plane, so they buy it in Belgium from dealers they can’t possibly trust.” And if you don’t know exactly what a dealer gives you, dosing properly becomes practically

Clearly, the best way to avoid trouble is to not take drugs. And it’s important to note that avoiding drugs means more than taking care of just yourself. Dewitte: “If you say you come to Tomorrowland because the vibe is international and you love everyone, I think it’s also good to consider people who are badly affected by the drugs trade. Think of how many runners end up in jail or even end up sentenced to death, just because there’s a demand for party drugs. Others get killed by the drug cartels. By not using drugs, people around the world experience a much better Tomorrow.”

THE BOOK OF WISDOM THE RETURN

FOCUS ON

IDA ENGBERG Friday | Freedom Stage | 21h00 - 23h00 (w/ Adam Beyer) Sunday | Atmosphere | 16h00 - 17h30

THE FEMALE For most of their roughly 40 years of existence, dance music DJ booths have been a male-dominated domain. The times are changing, though, and a new generation of female selectors are making their way from dark, underground clubs into the festival limelight. Tomorrowland is no exception to this trend, with more feminine talent on this year’s bill than ever before; what better way to unite than to have the festival’s gender balance realistically represented on stage, after all? Having come up mostly in the techno, electro and rave scenes, where quality and skill reign supreme over image and showmanship, Tomorrowland’s female DJs are poised to transform our understanding of dance music. Here are some of the femmes that will give you a glimpse of the future this weekend.

BELGIUM 2019

Versatility is the key word in this Swedish techno producer’s resumé. While the futuristic sound of Detroit is at the foundations of most of her work, she’s also ventured into projects with slightly more poppy artists and – more prominently so – house producers such as Roger Sanchez, Sebastian Ingrosso, Eric Prydz and fellow Swede John Dahlbäck. Naturally, you’ll hear a wide variety of sounds in her sets: expect anything from minimal to electro and from funky techno to techhouse. Interesting fact: Ida is married to Adam Beyer and they have three children together.

MATTN Sunday | Lotus | 18h30 – 19h30 Anouk Matton, better known under her stage name MATTN, used to frequent the underground house scene, which she felt was too dark, too much of an escapist exercise. Her current style as a DJ, which is more happy and positive, suits her much better – she describes it as a ‘celebration of life’. Many people know MATTN as Dimitri Vegas’s life partner, but she’s been around as a DJ for about five years now, which means she started spinning at the tender age of nineteen. Expect her to play sunny house and EDM bangers, with the occasional pop rework blended into the mix.

ELLEN ALLIEN Sunday | Core | 19h00 - 21h00 Berlin’s Ellen Allien has been running her famous BPitch imprint for twenty years now, and clearly is an icon of the electronic scene. She’s changed up her career recently, starting another record label called UFO Inc, but remains a welcome face at techno parties around the world. Allien is also active as a promoter, organising bi-monthly events at the famous Griessmühle club in her hometown. Ellen is a gifted and experienced DJ, whose mesmerizing sets span the whole spectrum of underground electronic music.

AMELIE LENS Friday | Atmosphere | 19h00 - 21h00 One of the rawest techno artists to be performing this year is 29-year-old producer Amelie Lens from Brussels. It’s hard to not instantly start bouncing to her bass-heavy, relentless techno sets with hints of bubbly acid and military-precision percussion. As is the case with many artists, Amelie experienced a ‘eureka’ moment early on in her career, after which many things changed: she went to a rock festival in 2006, and it was there, of all places, that she discovered electronic music in full. Upon arriving at home she started reading up on various electronic artists. With releases on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode and Pan-Pot’s Second State, Lens’s own sound does represent the banging four-to-the-floor nature of these record labels, although you shouldn’t be surprised to hear some dark underground electro in her mixes either. Amelie is one of the biggest sensations in the current techno scene - today you’ll have the chance to find out why!

LADY DAMMAGE Sunday | Cage | 22h30 - 23h30 Known in her native Spain as La Reina del Hardcore Nacional – The National Queen of Hardcore – it is obvious that Lady Dammage is a don when it comes to punishing, super-fast beats born out of a Roland 909 drum computer. There may not be much of a swing to what Paula Vigara Vivres does, but her music lends itself to vigorous dancing all the better. At only 21 years of age, there’s absolutely no doubt she is one of the big promises of the current hardcore scene. 31

THE GATHERING The time has come: Tomorrowland 2019 has kicked off. On this very first day, you’ll find yourself lucky to be able to rave right next to where you’ve pitched your tent. Easing you into the magical Tomorrowland atmosphere, as it were, The Gathering is almost a festival in and of itself – a glorious warm-up for the days to come. Many years ago, it was decided that DeamVille would open on Thursday, a day ahead of the full festival kick-off, so you can avoid the traffic jams and pitch your tent in a real chilled-out fashion. But practical matters aside, The Gathering comes highly recommended this Thursday, as it will give you an opportunity to acclimatize. Especially for those who have never been before, Tomorrowland’s magic can be a little intimidating at first. So with little cat 32

steps, The Gathering will give you a few hints about the grandeur of the weekend you are about to embark on – and offer you a chance to meet your fellow campers, of course. The Gathering may be a pre-party, but it will be unlike any pre-party you’ve seen before, because those who gather here are the People of Tomorrow, the most cheerful ravers in the world! Musically, The Gathering represents what’s going on in the current Belgian electronic scene, a scene that has been thriving since the very beginning of electronic dance music. With many clubs scattered across the country’s cities and even its villages, Belgium has always been a hotbed, a place where producers could try out new, exciting and revolutionary sounds on the dance floor. The Gathering’s lineup includes mostly Belgian DJs and artists old and young, established

as well as up-and-coming, spinning anything from old school rave to cross-over dance and EDM. People of Tomorrow, you now know what to do once you’ve pitched your tent: head to The Gathering and warm up those muscles as you rave along!

REGI VS YVES V 22h45 - 23h30

One of Belgium’s premium EDM DJs, Yves V has been in DJ Mag’s Top 100 for years. His B2B sets with long-time buddy Regi cover the full spectrum of high-energy EDM, ranging from happy and sunny singalongs to the kind of thumping, hoover-laden crowd pleasers that make your face contort in the best possible way. For a sample of what’s in store, check out the pop-star remixes Yves did for the likes of Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine.

JEROEN DELODDER

DJ LICIOUS

ROBERT FALCON

One of the key DJs at Belgium’s famous Studio Brussel radio station, Jeroen Delodder is known for DJ sets that are all over the shop in a very positive way. He can go rave, he can go trance, but he can also go disco, urban, pop, you name it. His are sunny, energetic and bright tunes, in other words, that are a perfect fit for a welcome party at the unique fairytale experience that is Tomorrowland. Go check out this don of a DJ, and be ready to dance to whatever funky tune he thinks fits the moment best.

Antwerp’s Wim Clukers, better known under his stage name DJ Licious, first played Tomorrowland back in 2010 - still using vinyl, mind you - at a small stage near the festival entrance. After producing his first tracks, demand for his performances went up, and after reaching the charts with ‘Calling’ in 2016, Licious was invited to play Tomorrowland’s mainstage. Clukers’s sets can best be described as an infectious blend of big room, house, EDM, electrohouse – any type of electronic dance music that will make you smile, really. Add the regularly returning element of percussive suspense to the mix, and you have a DJ Licious set in a nutshell.

The quaint town of Lier is home to La Rocca, one of Belgium’s most legendary clubs, but it is also the birthplace of Robert Falcon. No coincidence, then, that he came to love dance music as much as he does – he even celebrated his birthday at the venue once. At just 23, this producer is already highly prolific with releases across a range of record labels. In his sets, Mr. Falcon typically uses a lot of pop vocals. He carries up to three hundred of these self-made mash-ups with him while on tour!

MAINSTAGE | 12h00 – 14h50

Tomorrowland’s Mainstage is going to shine in 2019, that’s an obvious and given fact. How brightly it will shine, though – that is the big question. It’s going to be intimidating to see the biggest dance area of the Holy Grounds for the first time, that’s the only thing that is for sure. So to start with, the soundtrack will be easygoing, and brought to you by the first Daybreak DJ of the weekend: Kölsch. This guy’s name may sound like he hails from Cologne, Germany, but Rune Reilly Kölsch – one of the most in-demand techno DJs on the planet – really is Danish! He is a very allround artist, but more than anything, Kölsch excels at creating emotion-inducing melodies that bring his fans to tears (of joy, obviously). And that reservoir of fans has grown bigger and bigger over the past few years – having worked his way up through techno festivals, Kölsch is now easily big enough to play the most magical of stages here in beautiful Boom. With age comes experience, and at 42, Kölsch has such a vast amount of the latter that he can play literally any crowd, in any setting. With a background in and passion for electronic, dreamy vibes, the Scandinavian is the perfect guy to play a lengthy morning set that will wake up the raver inside you in the most pleasant and gentle way: a Daybreak Session. Imagine, for example, him pitching down one of his favourites, Hardfloor’s remix of Mory Kante’s ‘Yeke Yeke’. Will it be this, or something else that’s going to make you smile this morning? Kölsch is the only one who knows…

MC STRETCH FOCUS ON MAGICAL FRIDAY MAINSTAGE | ALL DAY LONG

When he says hey, you say ho. When you say Mainstage, we say MC Stretch. When he asks you to jump or sit down, that’s exactly what you do. But he’s a far more versatile MC and goes beyond the classic tricks out of the crowd-controlling handbook; he’s the kind of host that makes you feel at home, keeps you on the tip of your toes and propels the DJs to give nothing but their very best. His home is at the foot of the Mainstage, cozily decorated and very welcoming, where he accredits the dance music superstars of the world – not to steal their thunder in any way, but to make the crowd roar with excitement and joy. Meet the groundskeeper of Tomorrowland’s finest stage, the voice of the weekend and a thoroughly nice bloke: here’s MC Stretch. What’s the hardest part about hosting and MC’ing on the Mainstage? “The hardest part is that everybody wants to do their own MC’ing now. Because everything’s being streamed to millions of people now, it doesn’t make sense to encroach on their moment, as much as I might like to. The guys get one hour to do their thing, they want to talk on the mic, and I can’t interfere because it’s their show, you know? Some guys will go: ‘Stretch, come in and come on, do your thing’, some won’t. I want to help them, but sometimes they want to do it on their own.”

I’m Uncle Stretch, you know. If you have a problem and no one else can help you, come to me! Sometimes, you must know better than them. “I always know better than them (laughs)!” You’ve been MC’ing at Tomorrowland for thirteen years now. What are the do’s and don’t of running a huge stage like the Mainstage? What are the secrets of the craft? “It’s 100% a craft, absolutely. It’s not just shouting into a microphone. The key is to know music, dance music. Not just your little balcony of sounds - you need to know the whole beach, you know what I mean? You can look out from your balcony on that beautiful place, but you need to walk up and down that beach a few times to understand the real beauty.” You’ve welcomed a staggering lineup of DJs over the course of the weekend. With which one of them was the rendezvous the most fun, and why? “It’s always great to see Tiësto. He’s the one who made 35

me famous! He was here on Friday and we played a game of pool. He beat me, but then again, he’s a bit of a hustler (laughs). It’s always wonderful to see Dimi and Mike, and Armin of course, and the young guys as well: Licious, W&W. All of them really, they’re all family. I’m Uncle Stretch, you know. If you have a problem and no one else can help you, come to me!” What’s your opinion on the Daybreak Sessions? And how do you, as the host and MC, go about them? “The Daybreak Sessions are the best idea in festival history, ever, and they’re actually easier to MC. That’s because you know that the DJ’s got almost three hours and depending on what that DJ wants to do, they will mostly work with me during that time. So, it could be every thirty minutes or every forty-five minutes, doesn’t matter. They need that ‘Tomorrowland, let the DJ know how you’re feeling!’, you know? Tickle the audience a bit. It’s the mayonnaise over the Belgian Fries, not too much, just enough.” With what last words will you see the people off Sunday night after the last of the fireworks? “I love you all! And I’m proud of you, see you next time (laughs).”

MAINSTAGE | 12h00 – 14h50

Welcome to the second Daybreak Session of the weekend. Anyone who’s witnessed Kölsch’s set yesterday will know the purpose of the concept; it’s a warm-up to the rave where gentle beats and melodies find a way to wake up your dancing feet, as it were. Every Daybreak is different, though, and today’s edition will definitely set itself apart from yesterday’s. On this Saturday morning, the golden-faced German boy that goes by the name of Claptone will serve as your wake-up call. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding Claptone, one of the most gifted deep house DJs on the planet, with his own productions once wonderfully described by Mixmag as ‘crisply produced and effortlessly infectious’. One of the biggest questions around the artist is whether we’re talking about one or two people. The confusion arose a few years back, when Claptone performed at two different locations at exactly the same time. Say what? Yes, you heard it right. The man (or men) hides behind a wonderful golden-beaked mask, so will we ever know the answer? His identity isn’t all that important, though, when the music he plays is among some of the best chilled-out, but danceable house music to be heard on global dance floors right now. The wide variety of top-notch vocalists who have contributed to his work only add up to the relaxed vibe of the music. With features by Peter, Bjorn and John, Jay-Jay Johanson and Boxer Rebellion's Nathan Nicholson, and remixes of work by the likes of Gregory Porter and Florence + the Machine, Claptone’s delicate output is the perfect, easygoing soundtrack to start the day with.

GIANLUCA VACCHI FOCUS ON INCREDIBLE SATURDAY YOUPHORIA | 18h00 – 21h00

Gianluca Vacchi, one of Italy’s most Instafamous entrepreneurs, got into DJing about three years ago. He soon began to combine his gigs with the promotion of a successful club night in Ibiza, starting last summer. This year, he’s taking his musical career to the next level with his very own curated stage at Tomorrowland. Time to introduce this Italian sensation to the world! Gianluca, this is your first appearance on Tomorrowland. How do you feel about playing here? “It’s a big honour and I’m super-excited about bringing some new content to the festival.” What type of new content can we expect from you, then? “It will be more or less in line with what I’ve done last year in Ibiza. I’m generally a humble guy, but I think I can safely say that I changed the market in Ibiza. The new format that I brought to Amnesia is a mix between live Latin acts and DJs playing electronic music. You can’t simply play reggaeton all night, as people will get tired of it, but if you combine it with EDM it works. Pacha adopted the idea as well after it proved to be successful in Amnesia.”

Can you say something about the origins of your passion for music? “I come from a musical family. The famous composer Fabio Vacchi is a cousin of mine and my Argentinian grandmother was a piano teacher. My passion for music has always been there, but I’ve only made it public recently. The Latin thing began to take shape when I started to put videos of myself dancing up on Instagram. The way I dance works best with Latin music and when artists like Becky G and J Balvin saw the footage, they asked me to also film myself dancing to their music.” You took DJ lessons to improve your skills when you first started out. What was that like? “I’ve always been very curious about the trade. I often watched DJs at work in the booth, wondering what they did. When I started DJing I realised that being popular would help me to get started, but that to really build a career I would need skills. So I started to practice five, six hours a day under the supervision of Antonello Coghe, who’s worked with Little Louie Vega of the American production duo Masters At Work.” Is there a specific trick that was an eye-opener for you? Something that you love to do again and again when you’re on stage? “At the end of the day, once you own the technical side, what you really need to be able to do is read the crowd. I generally propose three musical directions and 37

then decide what works best by seeing how the crowd reacts. It’s like in business, really, when you don’t have the courage to change your mind, you’re not going to be a great man.” How did you select the artists that will perform on your stage? Are they mostly part of your personal network? “Many of them are, yes. Others are artists I admire, like the Afro Bros, who will be closing the stage. For me, they are the best producers of new sounds, elements you don’t hear in other people’s music. Generally, I’ve invited people with whom I share a common energy. If you had to name one act on your stage no one should miss, who would it be? “I’m gonna have to say Anitta. She is like a bomb, something else. You have to see her to understand what I’m saying. She’s incredibly talented as a singer and as a dancer. She is also the most sexy woman on the planet. These three things make her the queen of Latin music.”

Yves Deruyter MAINSTAGE | 12h30 – 14h20

Early afternoons at Tomorrowland are the perfect moments to ease into yet another festival day in Boom’s beautiful surroundings. Tomorrowland helps you a little as they’ve programmed unusual early DJ sets by some of the world’s biggest DJs. They’ll play sets they don’t get to play a lot, ones that allow you to eat a croissant and drink a cafe au lait while you dance. Today’s Daybreaker is Belgium’s rave don Yves Deruyter, whose name will forever be connected to the legendary early rave music of Bonzai Records. Impressively, there doesn’t seem to be a single influential Belgian club where Yves hasn’t been a resident DJ. Globe, Barocci, Cherrymoon, Extreme, Carat and La Rocca are just a few places where the living legend used to play his mesmerizing sets on the regular. Deruyter’s sound is usually very ‘nineties’ and uptempo, but who knows what the selector comes up with this time? His decade of choice was also known for the abundance of chillout rooms at raves. We’re thinking Yves may play you some gently bouncing ambient house tunes, but will he actually? It is the final day of Tomorrowland, of course, so there’s also a slight chance that Mr. Deruyter will think to himself, “to hell with it, I’ll start off with some banging early rave and breakbeat tunes by The Prodigy, SL2, Joey Beltram and Speedy J.” And then top it off with his own newly written ninetiesinspired material. There’s only one way to find out this afternoon, and you know it!

DIRK BROSSÉ

THE SYMPHONY OF UNITY FOCUS ON GLORIOUS SUNDAY FREEDOM | 17h00 – 18h00

The fifteenth anniversary of Tomorrowland calls for a celebration like no other, and to that end, the biggest classics of EDM – the true Tomorrowland anthems – will be honoured with a dramatic, orchestral treatment. Dirk Brossé, one of the world’s most renowned classical conductors, is about to step out of his comfort zone to lead a sixty-piece orchestra performing the Symphony of Unity, an hourlong show boasting the very biggest hits of electronic music with live instrumentation, exclusively for the People of Tomorrow. Mr. Brossé, besides doing the Symphony of Unity project you are also Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Music Director at Ghent Film Festival, and you teach at the Conservatory in Ghent. The Symphony of Unity project seems to stand out. How does it fit in with your career? “I used to work exclusively with classical music and now it’s about fifty/fifty classical and non-classical. With this project for Tomorrowland, I am making a statement. Engaging with electronic musicians still is unusual within my world. But if Beethoven were alive today, he would have done the same, I am convinced. Being a total rebel, he’d be on stage with DJs today, that’s something I’m sure of.” What did it take to convince the sixty-piece Metropole Student Orchestra to play the Symphony of Unity? Did the non-traditional character of the project make it easy to

convince classically trained musicians to come on board, or was it the other way around? “They’re excited, as it’s something out of the ordinary, but it’s also true that Tomorrowland has asked them to do something they’re specialised in. They’re lending classical timbres to the festival. The orchestra introduces the audience to the sounds of live instruments and at the same time, the musicians themselves are being introduced to the music of Tomorrowland. It gives them insight into questions about the secrets of EDM, into the ingredients of that sound.”

Can you think of an orchestral instrument that you find particularly suitable to recreate EDM tracks in a classical atmosphere? “I like to draw the analogy between music and building a house. There are the outside walls that everyone sees, but they can’t exist without the inside walls. Similarly, within music, there’s the double bass that you can’t hear very clearly, and there are the violins, recognisable to everyone. Somehow though, the violin wouldn’t be heard the same way without the double bass contributing its part to the composition.”

Now that you’ve studied them, can you answer these questions? “The way I see it, there are three essential elements of EDM. The beat and rhythm, to begin with, take us back to the very beginning of human history. Our ancestors were into percussion and trance, even before such a thing as melody was known. Secondly, there are the melodies, which are strongly tied to the rhythmic structures and are instantly memorised by the listener after first hearing them. Finally, there are the new and inventive sounds, modulated by DJs. These keep amazing me personally.”

You will be bringing three massive drums as part of the orchestra, can you tell us something about them? “There’s an island off the coast of Japan called Kodo, and everyone there plays percussion. An important instrument for them is this drum called the taiko. The drum sticks they use are almost as big as the stem of a tree. Those who play the taiko are forced to use all of their body weight. It really is spectacular, both visually and sonically. The undertones the drums produce are primal and immersive; they’ll play a big part in making this performance something that’s one of a kind and, I hope, unforgettable.”

Who are the musicians in the orchestra, what is their background? “They’re all classically trained musicians, who are about to graduate or have just graduated. They are young professionals, just like the audience at Tomorrowland, which is something I feel establishes a connection between those who make the music and those who listen to it.” 39
