COVER:

Festivals ‘16 Hello, Our programmer has been working her socks off to bring you an amazing May here at TOM, and we think you’ll agree that this one’s going to be a real humdinger. Fancy a little Bromance (p4 & 5)? Turn the page to see the boys who could “teach Isaac Newton a thing or two about gravity” (The Stage). Acclaimed touring company Paines Plough bring their UK Garagethemed (yes, you read that correctly) With A Little Bit Of Luck (p9) for a night out at the theatre that will make you rave. Elsewhere, the Wardrobe Ensemble explore the awkward first sexual encounters of three couples in 1972: The Future Of Sex (p14). Trygve Wakenshaw returns with his 5-star comedy world Kraken (p12 & 13), a hilarious show that’s hard to describe but must be seen. But why should adults have all the fun? James Campbell’s Comedy 4 Kids (p15) is top-notch stand up minus the naughty words. There are too many fantastic events to mention here, so please keep reading. Trust us, it’s worth it. And if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to come to everything. Get more festival tickets with 15% off selected shows by joining our TOM’s Friends scheme. Find out more at theoldmarket.com/tomsfriends. With a little bit of luck, we’ll see you soon. Happy festival!

Barely Methodical Troupe

Bromance Bromance – Noun (informal): A close but non-sexual relationship between men. Early 21st cent: blend of brother and romance. Relationships are the heart of the stylish Bromance, where handshakes become handstands and backslaps become backflips. This tour-de-force of physical heroics wittily explores male friendship and its limits through parkour skills, B-boying, tricking, hand-to-hand acrobatics, Cyr wheel and more. Set to a stunning soundtrack that ranges from Lee Fields, to Einaudi, Morricone to Tone Lōc, Bromance walks the line between pugnacious and poignant in a hilarious, jaw-dropping celebration of everything blokey. Why you should see it One of the UK’s hottest new circus ensembles, the boys have been wowing audiences of all ages the world over, winning a Total Theatre Award for their sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and the UK’s inaugural circus competition Circus Maximus in 2013.

Kraken

Join Gaulier-trained clown Trygve Wakenshaw as he returns for a beautifully strange and “blissfully funny hour of physical stream-of-consciousness” (Time Out). Magnificently mad, rubber-limbed Trygve is his own animator in a cartoon world, taking the audience from fun with unicorns, to sword-swallowing, to snake charming, weight-lifting, beatboxing, self boxing, and the birth of a baby elephant. It’s a strange world with never-ending laughter and the occasional bit of audience participation. Guileless and innocent – even at his most risqué, this is a physical comedian in a class of his own.

Why you should see it Kraken has won awards and sold out at multiple festivals since it was first created in 2014, and continues to delight audiences around the globe. WINNER: Best Comedy (Adelaide & Perth 2015); Underbelly Award (2014) and many more.
