theatre

the animals and children took to the streets

05-09 March

1927 and TOM present:

// as seen at the National Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre // “A jaw droppingly clever and gloriously subversive parable... a world so complete it feels as if you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole” Guardian Trust no one. Suspect even your own shadow. Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed, wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling, stinking tenement block, in which curtain-twitchers and peeping toms live side-by-side, and the wolf is always at the door.

Like a giant graphic novel burst into life, 1927 invite you on a theatrical journey of startling originality. “Anyone interested in the theatre should see this company now” The Observer. Seamlessly synchronizing live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation, this wickedly twisted show comes to TOM - The Old Market for a limited season, following a world premiere at Sydney Opera House and sell-out, critically acclaimed seasons in Sydney, Melbourne, London, Perth and Paris.

“This is a perfect alternative show. In fact, it is a perfect show.”

the dizzy gillespie afro cuban experience

music

TOM presents:

// featuring special guest Machito Jr. under the direction of John Lee

Dizzy Gillespie’s most famous contributions to Afro-Cuban music are the compositions “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo”. Machito’s Afro Cubans (formed in 1940), the creators of Cu-Bop, were a major influence on musicians like Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy loved it so much, that in 1975, he invited Machito’s son, Mario Grillo or Machito Jr., to join Dizzy’s band for the recording of ‘Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods’. So it only makes sense to have Machito Jr. join the Dizzy Gillespie™ Afro Cuban Experience as a special guest alongside performers: John Lee, Bass; Freddie Hendrix, Trumpet & Flugelhorn; Sharel Cassity, Sax & Flutes; and Robby Ameen, Drums.

deliciously demented

gothic thriller, directed by

Cal McCrystal

// “a carefully crafted brand of lunacy... made me laugh so much my throat hurt” The Times A misty night.

A young girl arrives at a remote railway station in the heart of darkest Northumberlandshirehampton to take up her position as confidential secretary to the reclusive Forbes Murdston. Beautiful, fawn-like, swinging, but a hostage to passion, Laura knows now that life - and love - will never be the same again... ...And her an orphan! She has ignored for as long as she can the unsettling rumours that surround her new employer, his ominous manservant Klaus and the ancient mansion. But Murdston’s violent mood-swings can only signify one thing: INSANITY! Her terrible dreams seem to warn of some impending calamity. If only she could get word to Inspector Judadench to warn him. In her desperation she turns to the trusty family lawyer Roger Parchment. How can she leave Forbes now, now that he is so close to finishing his memoirs? How can she leave him when she has grown to love him? Yes, now... now she is truly... …COOPED! International comedy sensation Spymonkey present their deliciously demented take on the pulp gothic novella.

“Side-splittingly funny” The Times “A vulnerable man” The Guardian

Recent TV and radio appearances include Matt Lucas Awards (BBC1), QI (BBC2), Dave’s One Night Stand (Dave, obviously), Unbelievable Truth and The Now Show (BBC Radio 4), Fighting Talk (BBC Five Live) and his own six part BBC Radio2 series Henning Knows Best.
