introducing TOM - The Old Market

Performances, gigs, theatre, dance, events; TOM, The Old Market, is a dynamic cultural venue just outside Brighton city centre. TOM’s main space is a 300-500 capacity room with the flexibility to showcase everything from rock bands to exciting new theatre or cabaret. Recently re-fitted, TOM is also home to rehearsal spaces, production facilities and art and photography galleries. TOM’s bar, open every Thursday and Friday night, hosts its own entertainment from DJs to film screenings, live music to comedy.

// TOM and TOM’s Programming theatre

Designed to accomodate a diverse range of performance requirements, TOM’s auditorium suits intimate theatre, shows which demand large stage space, or even creative staging arrangements. We are fast earning a reputation as a great venue for quality theatre in Brighton and Hove.

comedy

TOM is ideal for stand-up, sketch or even mixed-media comedy. Seating can be arranged fully-end on, in cabaret tables, or as a mixture of the two. TOM’s Bar also hosts regular comedy nights featuring both new and headline performers.

music

TOM’s spacious auditorium (up to 500 standing) provides an excellent atmosphere that has impressed musicians and audiences alike. Great acoustics, quality production values and an inspiring setting. Optional arrangements include various PA specifications, standing space, cabaret tables, raked seating, stage-side bar, support stages and DJ faciliites.

events

Combined with TOM’s Bar, the auditorium becomes an ideal event space for private or public functions. Launch events, celebrations, unveilings, even film premieres would all be ideally placed at TOM. The elegant Waterloo Room is a fantastic additional function space.

The Old Market: 1828 to Present

The Old Market began life in 1828 housing meat, fish, vegetables, sellers and buyers. It supplied the elegant residential development of Brunswick town, which was originally independent from Brighton and Hove village. As Brighton and Hove have grown up around it, The Old Market building has catered for changing needs, operating as a stables, warehouse and more recently as an arts venue. In 2010 current owners Yes/No Productions bought and rennovated the building, fitting it out for gigs, theatre productions, events, performances and generally transformed The Old Market into TOM; a fantastically flexible cultural space.

// TOM’s Main House

// 300-500 Capacity flexible performance and event space...

TOM’s main house

Recently fully refurbished, TOM’s Main House is a fantastic 11mx24m room which can be configured in a huge range of setups. Hanging between gorgeous wooden roof beams, the truss is 5.15m above floor level. Standard theatre, music and comedy staging arrangments comprise a 6-6.6m stage at one end, however the space has the flexibility to accomodate multiple stages, catwalk staging or other arrangements to suit your show or event.

audience arrangements

192 raked seats can be extended out and combined with extra freestanding seats to boost seated capacity to 300. Maximum capacity for audience members standing is 500. Variations on these arrangements are numerous, and we’re happy to discuss the best set up for your event.

backstage facilities Behind the scenes at TOM - The Old Market you’ll find an extensive network of dressing rooms, showers, production offices and facilities.

In previous years, shows at TOM have brought the seaside into our cellar cinema, created a fictional government department in our green room, and a party in our Box Office. We’re very happy to use our imaginations in utilising various spaces in this large building.

TOM’s Bar & Waterloo Room

Whether supporting the Main House or providing event space of its own, TOM’s Bar and the elegant adjoining Waterloo Room are great for social functions or sit-down events. Although we don’t have a ‘studio space’ as such, TOM’s Bar is also regularly set up with a stage, basic lighting and seating for theatre, comedy, talks and live music.

backstage, dressing rooms, offices and The Dry Store Cinema Backstage, a number of rooms provide great ‘break-out’ spaces, should your event need a bit of extra space or privacy. Many of these have also been used for site-specific performances. One of our cellar rooms can also be converted into a screening space, The Dry Store Cinema, suitable for intimate films and video installations. The room has a capacity of 10-12, and is accessed via a spiral staircase into the basement.

facilities & provisions Wi-Fi - Free, and available front of house and backstage. Projector in TOM’s Bar - Presentations, videos or graphics can be displayed for all to see, with a variety of input options. PA Sound System - In TOM’s Bar and our Waterloo Room, using your own music, or providing microphones for speakers couldn’t be easier. Flip Charts - Are available in house.

Data collected from sales can be passed on to you if audience members have given their permission.

press & marketing Your marketing efforts will be well supported by TOM. We produce regular program brochures, run a multimedia website, send e-mailouts, produce posters, plus we’ve got great relationships with local printers, flyerers, and advertisers. // How? What? and When?

what’s the deal?

TOM is a privately owned, non-funded venue. We work with companies on a whole range of bases, and deals are arranged according to the show, your requirements, and a number of other factors. The more information you’re able to supply us with, the easier it will be for us to work out a deal.

what should I supply?

An application form is provided as part of this pack, which guides you through the process of what we need to know. We’d also love to recieve: // A summary of the show, its appeal for audiences widely or in niche groups and any past performance history // Your staging and technical requirements // Photos, videos, or media relating to your show, or past performance coverage.

when are the deadlines?

Applications open 23 October 2012, and there are various deadlines, from ‘earlybird’ to ‘absolutely final’. Please apply as soon as you can for the best chance of a slot.

when will I hear?

We aim to respond to all applications as soon as we can, although we often have to make date confirmations late in the application process. Please bear with us as we go through our applications.
