Lasers! VR! Theatre that YOU control! Got your attention? Brighton Digital Festival is here and we’re serving up our biggest #TOMtech season ever. Although new technologies can push us more towards a life spent indoors in the ‘warm’ glow of a screen away from the worlds they were designed to enrich, in #TOMtech we’ve been exploring how technology can allow us to see things differently, through new eyes, and reconnect back with the world. For the first time, we’re introducing huge scale installations into our space. Cutting-edge design studio Marshmallow Laser Feast brings us the awe inspiring Habitats (p4 & 5), which celebrates nature with a spectacular laser forest and immersive virtual reality experiences. Elsewhere in VR, the sensual journey Frogman (p6) is ground breaking VR theatre with binaural sound that takes you into the heart of the coral reef, whilst WHIST (p7) journeys into the unconscious mind. And vrLAB (p8) returns to showcase yet more virtual reality experiences following a sell-out run last year. Elsewhere, there’s cutting edge automated performance in Macondo (p10) and Remote (p11) where you, the audience, steer the show. Check out the full #TOMtech line up on pages 4-11. Phew! On top of all that we’ve our usual offering of comedy, gigs, and a healthy dose of films from TOM’s Film Club. And if you’re looking for Halloween laughs for all the family, TOM faves Le Navet Bete return with their 5-star brand-new show Dracula: The Bloody Truth (p16) here for five days this October. WooooOOOOooo! See you in the forest...

#tomtech 2017 What can new technology bring to the world of live entertainment? Now’s your chance to find out We’re living in the middle of the largest technological revolution since we mechanised farming, which brought us in from the fields to the cities, saw us develop a five day working week, and changed the shape of our society. With new technologies emerging at an ever-increasing rate, we wonder what the next 20 years will bring. Last year, we launched #TOMtech to assist artists in exploring this brave new world, questioning how we’ll consume art and culture in the future, and what that future will look like for society as a whole. Expect experimental theatre, new VR (Virtual Reality) shows that enable you to visit immersive new environments, as well as talks and discussions on the latest tech trends and discoveries. For artists, we run labs to introduce new technologies and allow space to see what is possible when they master these tools. This year, we are running a workshop on the basics of VR / AR (Augmented Reality) coding, and offering two theatre companies a funded week to explore how they can use realtime motion capture, live on stage. Join the conversation online: Shows: theoldmarket.com/TOMtech Podcast: tomtechblog.com Social Media: #TOMtech #TOMtech is funded by The National Lottery through Arts Council England and presented in partnership with the Digital Catapult, British Science Festival and Make[Real].

Cat and Mouse
A coming of age, supernatural thriller, told through VR and binaural sound.
an animation adventure, featuring original big screen cartoons, live music and performance.
Queensland, Australia, 1995. Meera is eleven. It’s her first sleepover. Strawberry dunkaroos, SEGA Megadrive, and band practice descends into stories by torchlight, swapping coral fragments and theorising about the universe. Lights off. In the corner, the aquarium is beginning to glow. Outside in the coral reef, the Frogman dives by moonlight looking for traces of a missing child as blue police lights reflect across the water. With the annual coral bloom due, time is running out.
Cat and Mouse navigates extremes of human idiocy from art to war, from technology to industry, from civilisation to love all rendered through the shenanigans of a rodent, a feline and the dogs of law. But who is really to blame in this anthropomorphic chaos, Mr Mouse or Mr Cat? Don’t forget that a good Cat is not a good Cat if he has no bad Mouse against which to be compared.
Commissioned by TOM, this impressive VR show from double Fringe First-winners curious directive takes you inside the rainforests of the sea.

Under the Shadow covers the ghostly goings on of a mother and daughter living in postrevolution Tehran of 1988. After an unexploded missile skims the top of their apartment building, Dorsa, the daughter, is under the strong impression that spirits are now haunting their home while her mother Shideh, grounded more in the grim reality of their situation, is more concerned for the return of her husband from the Iran-Iraq War. But is it the mother projecting her anxiety that is the cause of her daughter’s night terrors, the family’s war-torn surroundings, or is there something even more frightening at foot?

There were many on the UK folkscene who felt the same urge for similar challenges and change in their own music and lives, and Oysterband’s hard-edged music and performances amply filled those needs. They brought passion, and not a little poetry to folk and roots music, but also a welcome power and energy.

Directed by Fred M. Wilcox, Seated, the film follows Space Unreserved Commander John J. Adams 1 hour 38 minutes as he journeys to the largely Rated PG unexplored planet Altair-4 in search of a previous expedition which went missing many decades prior. Upon arriving to this new and mysterious world, he encounters the brilliant but arrogant Dr. Morbius, his daughter Altaira, their versatile metallic servant Robby the Robot, but no other signs of life, with the reasons soon becoming clear. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and a pre-Airplane! and Naked Gun Leslie Nielsen, Forbidden Planet boasts some superb monster effects (created by Disney animators), the first all electronic musical soundscape in film history, and overall an extraordinary scale unmatched by many films of its era, and still continues to impress and influence audiences to this day.

Marko is the minutes first member of the resistance Rated 15 movement to reach the surface after the war is over, but he neglects to tell the others that the war has ended so they can continue manufacturing arms. The Vaudevillians
Thu 30 Nov Fri 1 Dec, 8pm (doors 7.15pm)
£16.50 (£12 conc.) Friends 15% Off Seated, unreserved
After selling out an oftenextended Off-Broadway run, 16+ Australian tour and London 1 hour 10 minutes run at Soho Theatre, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon heads out across the UK with The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales.
Throughout the 1920’s Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow - instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed. It’s a vintage cabaret with a twist of drag.
“The laughs are jam-packed and the musicianship is flawless… It’s an expert blend of comedy, song and theatre and I’m going to do my best to see it a second time.” ★★★★ Time Out, Melbourne “Straight or gay, everyone leaves this show with sides aching from laughter.” The New York Times “Intelligent and entertaining… Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are the millennial Kiki and Herb” TheaterMania
