COVER:
Festivals 2017 Hello, We love Festival season here at TOM, and as usual, we're serving up our own lovingly-crafted BRIGHTON FRINGE programme, plus more from BRIGHTON FESTIVAL, THE GREAT ESCAPE and ARTISTS OPEN HOUSES. Notions of masculinity are challenged with witty performance MACHO MACHO (p11), whilst AY | NA (p6) and SLAP AND TICKLE (p6) champion strong women. Speaking of which, soul powerhouse AVERY*SUNSHINE (p7) will be delivering her signature mix of soul, gospel, jazz and R&B, supported by future soul Brighton newcomers YAKUL. MELANCHOLY (p10) and JACK ROOKE: GOOD GRIEF (p10) deftly tackle the subject of mourning, whilst FOCUS GROUP* (p4) explores the loneliness and absurdity of modern life. And we continue looking inward with WILDER STORIES (p5), three specially curated, colour-themed nights of storytelling and music, presented by local singer-activist-poet Chris T-T. If you want to get political, comedy shows JONNY & THE BAPTISTS: EAT THE POOR (p7) and ED ACZEL'S FOREIGN POLICY (p9) will be right up your street. And there's escapist silliness from TRYGVE WAKENSHAW with NAUTILUS (p11), plus three genre film send ups from SLEEPING TREES (p8-9), returning to TOM following hit runs last year. Want it all? We don't blame you. The good news is, if you join our TOM'S FRIENDS scheme, you'll get 15% off TOM's shows. Find out more at THEOLDMARKET.COM/TOMSFRIENDS.

Focus Group* * or How to Stare Down & Transfigure Loneliness1 1 a play after David Foster Wallace Sun 7 May, 7.30pm Inspired by the cult US writer’s short story Mister Squishy, Focus Group* is a comedy with a dark heart, exploring the loneliness and absurdity of modern life and consumer culture with humanity and humour. It is strange, unsettling and playful. The production celebrates the human drive to continue in what can feel like an increasingly remote reality. Through TOOT’s distinctive style of interactive performance, the company provokes audiences to consider whether a real connection is possible at all.
Sit back, eat (individually wrapped, luxury) cake, and see a man gradually relinquish the delusion that he matters in the slightest.... And then go back to watching kitten videos on Facebook.

Wilder Stories: Rhapsodies In colour Join us for three pigment-drenched intimate storytelling nights this May, each themed around a different colour. Have you ever thought about what colour love is? What about rage? For this specially curated live-lounge podcast, we’re inviting storytellers: musicians, writers, academics and artists from across the city to share a story with us evoked by colour over three intimate Sunday sessions at The Old Market. Hosted by local singer/songwriter Chris T-T with a live score by Todd Jordan, each night is inspired by a different hue: blue, red and green. Tickets are just £5, and £3 each if you buy a ticket for more than one Wilder Stories event. VENUE PLEDGE: For every ticket we sell for the Wilder Stories live shows, we pledge to make a seat available for our TOM programme throughout the year for people in community groups that we work with who wouldn’t usually be able to go to the theatre.

Liz’s “refreshing irreverence” (theatrebubble) litters the stage in a disorientating display of interpretations and received contradictions about women, girls, mothers and pensioners. It’s a feminist soup, which lurches from spoken word to expressionist movement, music hall to radio nostalgia, costume change to prop manipulation. Come on everybody let’s have a party!
