bringing new vibrancy & a personal story to the horrors of WW1 HORRORS of war are vividly brought to life in The Trench, a gripping tale of torment in tunnels beneath the WW1 battlefield. Blending live music, puppetry and physical performance, the show brings new vibrancy to this wellknown subject matter. The Trench, written and directed by Oliver Lansley, offers a fascinating insight into the life of one soldier, Bert, who is thrown into turmoil by the physical and mental torment of trench life. The show is currently
into play mythology and mystery to add a new dimension to this personal tale with conflict at its core. “We have all heard about the horrors of war” explains Oliver, ‘and the terrible human suffering of conflict, but with this piece we wanted to find an individual, innovative way to explore the subject and draw in the audience. We seized on the idea of using the tunnel as the centrepiece to the performance, both as a physical and a figurative symbol of imprisonment.”
“action and atmosphere, prompting an instinctive reaction from the audience.” touring the UK with Oliver’s theatre company Les Enfants Terribles. Its run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe last summer sold out and earned 5 star reviews. Inspired by the true story of Sapper William Hackett, who became entombed in a tunnel and lost his life to save his fellow soldiers, The Trench is a harrowing account of the journey of a tunneller, burrowing deep beneath enemy lines as the troops battle for territory above. Hackett was the only tunneller in WW1 to recieve the Victoria Cross.
With home and family in mind, tunneller Bert finds peace and comfort from his burgeoning friendship with young recruit Collins. Soon, though, the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur and Bert is immersed in a horrific nightmare, unable to control his fate as unworldly creatures loom large and invade his soul. Oliver adds: “We combined different theatrical effects, from shadow puppetry to live music, exploring the subject in different ways and connect with the audience on an emotional level, prompting a visceral reaction.
Writer Oliver Lansley combines The fast-paced performance is fantasy and reality, bringing
enhanced by majestic live music, written and performed by Alexander Wolfe. Songs, Oliver explains, are critical, “conveying action and atmosphere, prompting an instinctive reaction from the audience.” Truly masterful, this carefully crafted production offers a fresh interpretation of a familiar subject, as a poignant personal story is expressed in stunning detail in a creative and captivating performance.

it’s just a case of...
making the sounds TOM interviews toy / folk / pop musician Kate Daisy Grant
One half of the newly-wed and perfoming duo with Nick Pynn, Kate Daisy Grant is no straightforward songstress. We find out how and why Kate makes music... Kate, your show makes music from “toy, folk and home-made instruments”. Is it a refined affair or a ramshackle one? It may appear haphazard, but I promise this is carefully planned, orchestrated chaos. My performing-partner Nick Pynn has created over 20 instruments for our current tour, and it’s his wizardry that makes sense of all the apparent ‘junk’! A carefully-crafted set, then? Some elements certainly have to be. Together, we use live-looping which requires concentration on the layers of sound. Nick’s music is a lot more precise than mine, whereas mine allows for a bit more freedom. There’s always an eventual destination in mind, but you often encounter terrifyingly accidental ‘experiments’ on route. Where do your songs come from? Dreams, thoughts, somewhere in space, certainly not from any normal-day situation. My process is something near a trance-state. Nick, on the other hand, finds a melody line, decides on the instrument (or builds himself a brand new one) and plays it. Inspirations arrive in your head, then it’s a case of making those into sounds. You and Nick have played various Fringe Festivals – why ‘cultural’ rather than ‘music’ festivals? We enjoy performing to mixed audiences, and there’s greater range at Fringes. We find Fringe audiences are less influenced by current musical trends, and often more open to feeling a core, instinctive reaction to our music. With our elaborate and complex technical set-up, it’s also much more practical to have audiences drop in and discover us while we stay in one spot. Less lugging for us! Any other favourite festivals?
“Meeting Nick was magical, and we immediately started both romance and music” Green man is ideal, and Glastonbury. But what we like most is being on tour, going to really out-of-the-way places. We like being found where you wouldn’t expect to find us, then working hard to win over an audience who’ve taken a complete punt. You see their expressions changing, and get a lovely reaction afterwards. Now, congratulations are in order for you both… when was the wedding? Thank you! We got married on our only day off during Edinburgh Festival Fringe last August. Have you and Nick always had a working relationship? I was looking for a multi-instrumentalist to perform with. Meeting Nick was magical, and we immediately started both romance and music. I can’t imagine how you could work so closely with someone and not be a couple… it would be so inconvenient!
If you could play anywhere, where would it be? I don’t care where we play, as long as there are people. People of any age, size, description, whatever. Other picks of this year’s Festivals? Everything that’s happening at Bom Bane’s Café. I’m playing with Jane on the 3rd, then there’s Spacedog on 21st and The Baroque Byrds on 30th. All of those will be really special.
