Welcome to
COVER:
spring 2017 Hello, Welcome to Spring 2017 at TOM – a season designed to remedy the disappointment that was the year 2016. Us humans can be extremely tough. In Thrive (p9) and Near Gone (p14), we explore the emotional consequences of painful events and the human capacity to dig deep and convey with many different kinds of language – humour, physicality, dance, words – the unspeakable. Expect tons of laughs to help ease the shocks of 2016, with top stand-ups Tony Law (p13), Susan Calman (p6), James Acaster (p5), award-winning physical comedy Police Cops (p7) and more. Let your hair down in blistering gigs from beatboxer Shlomo (p7), and Dizraeli and DownLow (p13), three incredibly fastwitted musicians (Shlomo will be doing a kids show too - see p6). And we explore the line between epic gig and powerful raucous theatre with Medea Electronica (p12) and the appropriatelynamed-for-2017 Songs for the End of the World (p11). Want to binge on TOM shows (the healthiest kind of binge!)? Join the TOM’s Friends scheme to get 15% off of selected shows. Find out more at theoldmarket.com/tomsfriends We'll see you soon. Hang on in there...

About US We think THE OLD MARKET (or TOM for short) is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. We aim to encourage the presentation and production of performance arts, by handpicking shows (see TOM’S TAGS for our picks). We often add new shows – keep an eye on THEOLDMARKET.COM and sign up to our newsletter to stay one-step ahead of the crowds. TOM is owned and supported by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of the smash-hit show STOMP.

On the edge of a nervous breakdown, H stumbles into a gallery and across the work of Vivian Maier, the “reclusive nanny” who has posthumously emerged as one of the greatest street photographers of all time. H’s hallucinatory encounter with the genius who kept her photography a secret explores Maier’s extraordinary life and examines issues of privacy raised by her evolving story. Performed in a gallery type space, with action happening both around the audience and on their smartphones, Still asks: is there is any privacy left? Who owns your life? And who else knows where you’ve been?
