COVER:

SPRING ‘18 Hello, Don’t put away your Winter coat just yet, because it’s Reigning Women (Hallelujah!) at TOM this SPRING. We’re celebrating women this season with a series of fantastic female-fronted shows, including the explosive acrobatic display of sisterhood HYENA (p9); coming of age story Girlhood (p14) and frank and entertaining Enter The Dragons (p15) storm our stage in the comedy that won ‘Best of Brighton Fringe’ last year. Take a look at pages 12-13 for the whole mini-season, and prepare yourself for some serious GIRL POWER. We can’t forget to big-up the Men this season, as Richard Herring (p14) continues to lift the lid on ageing in his half century milepost, ‘Oh Frig, I’m 50!’, and long-time funny man Griff Rhys Jones (p7) reminisces on forty years in the business. We celebrate the 'Dude of all Dudes’ (“That or, uh His Dudeness, or uh Duder, or El Duderino") by donning our dressing gowns and marking the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of The Big Lebowski with a screening and A Big Lebowski Party (p11). There’ll be White Russians a plenty and prizes for the best outfits! Giving an incite into life on both sides of the gender fence, the critically acclaimed, sell-out at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, TESTOSTERONE (p10), presents an honest and hilarious take on the minefield of modern masculinity. Have a great time browsing our SPRING programme; we hope you’ll agree it’s a bright, bold and beautiful start to the year.

TOM’s Film Club presents:

My Left Foot (1989)

The Last Of The Mohicans (1992)

There Will Be Blood (2007)

The first feature in a triple-bill celebrating the master of method acting, Sir Daniel Day-Lewis.

Probably the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Daniel Day-Lewis in an action film, we continue our DDL triple-bill with Michael Mann’s epic historical drama.

Often cited as one of the best films of the 21st century, Paul Thomas Anderson’s magnificent oil-prospecting saga closes our Daniel Day-Lewis triple-bill.

Set in 1757 during the French and Indian War, Day-Lewis plays legendary frontiersman Hawkeye, a white-orphaned settler, adopted by the last member of a native tribe. During this battle, he falls in the love with a British army officer's daughter and finds a new reason to continue fighting.

Appearing in all but two scenes throughout the film’s two-anda-half-hour runtime, Day-Lewis gives the performance of his life as the unsympathetic Machiavellian oil tycoon Daniel Plainview.

My Left Foot chronicles the life of Christy Brown, an Irish man afflicted with cerebral palsy who found acclaim for his writings and paintings created using his only functional limb, his left foot. Daniel Day-Lewis won his first Best Actor Academy Award for this role, and quickly developed a reputation as an idiosyncratic method actor, staying in character throughout the entire shoot long after the cameras stopped rolling. Directed by one of Ireland’s finest filmmakers, Jim Sheridan, My Left Foot is a cinematic accomplishment of human courage and strength against adversity and hardships.

Mohicans is well known for the offscreen devotion of Day-Lewis, in preparation for the role he learnt to track and skin wild animals, build a canoe and cut firewood with a tomahawk. He eventually perfected the use of a 12-pound flintlock gun, which he took everywhere he went, even to a Christmas dinner.

The film opens with Plainview as he perilously mines for silver, but instead strikes “black gold”. When Plainview visits the owners of the land in the guise of “a family man", he is interrupted by local priest Eli Sunday (played brilliantly by a young Paul Dano), who has other ideas, and hopes that Plainview will fund a new church through his exploits, thus starting decades of conflicts and compromises between the two opposing figures.

Robin Hood Set in a society divided by wealth and power, the play cavorts between the wild, carefree existence of Robin and his forest dwelling friends, and the harsh regime inside the Sheriff ’s Castle, where a young Maid Marian struggles between her desire for independence and loyalty to her overbearing Uncle. Bringing the classic story of outlaws and adventure bang up-to-date, and set to stunning original music (think Mumford meets Arctic Monkeys), this vibrant adaptation is guaranteed fun for the whole family.

The Big Lebowski (1998) Twenty years ago, on 6 March 1998, The Coen Brothers followed up their success with the Academy Award winning Fargo by releasing a film that most critics hated, flopped at the box office and divided audiences.“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.” Since its release, The Big Lebowski has become the very definition of what a cult film is, gaining a loyal following- with a religion (Dudeism) and an annual festival known as 'Lebowski fest'created in its honour. Jeff Bridges, who wore much of his own wardrobe for the role, plays The Dude, an amiable and unemployable burnout who gets mixed up in a rambling tale of lies, corruption, mistaken identity and bowling. With a memorable ensemble cast of misfit deadbeats and Nihilists, including the terrific John Goodman as Walter, Steve Buscemi as Donny and Julianne Moore as The Dude’s “lady friend” Maude.

“Recently someone asked me, “How would you feel at the end of your career if the role you were most famous for was the Dude?” “I’d be f***ing delighted,” I told him” Jeff Bridges, 2007

comebacks i thought of later

ode to the attempt (a solo for mEself)

by Eleanor Sikorski

by jan martens:

Have you ever kicked yourself not being more quick-witted? Or replayed a conversation in your head that you wish had gone differently? This is about that. These are tales of sex and sassy comebacks, where things are turned on their head. Tragedy becomes beauty, regret becomes comedy and the mundane wonders and traumas of life get a good kicking.

After producing some almost dogmatic pieces like The Dog Days Are Over (2014) and Sweat Baby Sweat (2011), this solo is a safe zone for Martens to fool around in. The result is a collage-like self-portrait laying bare choreographic and other choices and his way of working and living.
