Welcome to

COVER:

Summer 2017 hELLO, This season as part of TOM's Film Club, we're celebrating the return of Twin Peaks with a screening of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) - part of our David Lynch Mini-Season (p5) - and there'll be a Twin Peaks-themed after-party following the screening with plenty of black coffee and cherry pie. Other cult offerings include two brilliant but often overlooked musicals (p10), an Alien/Aliens double bill (p8) and a Ken Loach miniseason (p11), including a special charity screening of I, Daniel Blake. Tickets for all TOM's films this season are £6 each, £10 for two or £24 for all nine. We're thrilled to be hosting yet more fantastic gigs - from the wistful The Staves (p4) through to shambolically virtuoustic troubadour Richard Dawson (p7) and the critically-acclaimed Thurston Moore Group (p6). And we throw our doors open once more for Blue Camel Club (p4), Carousel's wildly successful club night for learning disabled people and their friends. Instead of cringing about our embarrassing moments and the questionable decisions we sometimes make in life, maybe we should mine them for comedy gold? Comedian Katy Brand spills all in I Was A Teenage Christian (p7) - her hit Edinburgh Festival show exploring her self-imposed conversion and total immersion in evangelical Christianity. And TOM's future looks bright... laser-bright to be specific. Turn to p13 for a teaser of the exciting large-scale installations taking over our building as part of this year's #TOMtech. See you soon,

“I am not an elephant! I am not an animal! I am a human being! Quite apart from his usual work, the nightmarish imagery of this film reinforced a moving and heart-breaking message of the human condition, which could not have worked were it not for Hurt’s delicate and poignant performance, and the many hours of heavy makeup he had to endure for the role.

Shell Shock Shell Shock is a stunning personal realisation of one soldier’s experience of learning to cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. After serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, Tommy Atkins’ observations on the absurdities of everyday life on civvy street are frequently comic, occasionally absurd, sometimes violent but always poignant. His wired energy leads to hyperemotional responses - from post office queues and a trip to IKEA to his relationships with family and friends - lead to alienation and anger.

Thurston Moore Group The critically acclaimed Thurston Moore Group will be coming to The Old Market this June. More of a ‘war’ film than Star Wars ever was, Aliens didn’t need to add a ‘2’ to the end of its title to make it scary, adding an ‘s’ and making it plural was terrifying enough. “a sequel that exceeds its predecessor in the reach of its appeal while giving Weaver new emotional dimensions to explore.” Richard Schickel, Time

Friends 15% off The musical genre is one of the more popular pastimes Seated, for film-goers looking unreserved for some escapism, but few were as realist, mature or as bittersweet as Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: rather than have a few musical numbers sung sporadically throughout the film to express dreams and emotions, Demy abandoned spoken dialogue in his film and instead had his characters communicate exclusively through song. Told in three parts, the film is the love story between Geneviève, played beautifully and brilliantly by Catherine Deneuve, an employee of her mother’s umbrella shop, and Guy (Nino Castelnuovo), a mechanic who will soon be going off to war, and thus potentially straining their whirlwind romance.

After directing Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese decided to go a completely Friends 15% off different route with his next project New York, New York - an Seated, MGM-styled musical of the old unreserved Technicolor Hollywood variety. Liza Minnelli plays Frances Evans, a struggling nightclub singer / aspiring actress and Robert De Niro plays Jimmy Doyle, a saxophonist / jazz enthusiast. Sound familiar yet? Together they embark on a turbulent love-hate relationship while at the same time trying to further their own creative endeavours and dreaming of reaching the “Big Time”. A long forgotten gem, New York, New York is a film that’s prime for reappraisal forty years on from release, and deserves to have its praises sung from the rooftops much like a show-stopping musical sequence, akin to Minnelli’s wonderful delivery of the iconic title number.
