Welcome to

winter 2016 Hello, The weather may have been getting colder, but we’ve been having a great time tucked away in the warmth of our venue, with our virtual reality headsets on. We looked a bit silly but it was definitely worth it to experience many strange digital worlds. Check out the #TOMtech photos on the other side (p2). This season, we’re marking what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday, and the anniversary of his untimely passing with From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads (p11), a powerful story about a Bowie fanboy. And following the successful launch of our new series TOM’s Film Club, we’re planning some Bowiethemed film screenings around the same time. Keep an eye on theoldmarket.com for updates. The insanely talented Beardyman (p6) sold out two gigs here at TOM last year, creating two albums in two hours from scratch based on audience suggestions. We’ve brought him back to do it again, but this time he’s bringing his mind-blowing freestyle supergroup for the ride. Book now, as this one’s going to sell out way in advance. Looking for a Christmas treat for the kids? The Magic Lamp (p10) is a truly magical alternative to pantomime. You’ll be transported to far off lands in a beautiful Bedouin tent, as a bewitching shadow play is told using just light, paper and oil. And if you can’t get enough, get rewarded for your appetite. Get a TOM’s Friends membership for 15% off selected shows. Find out more at theoldmarket.com/tomsfriends.

Standing Last year, multi-award-winning musician and comedian Beardyman brought his sell-out show One Album Per Hour to TOM for two wildly successful nights. And now Beardyman’s back. But this time, he’s bringing a mindblowing supergroup of some of the world’s best freestyle musicians and vocalists along for the ride, including one of the world’s best drummers, Emre Ramazanoglu, World female Beatbox champ Bellatrix on Beatbox, double bass and electric bass, Rob Lewis on cello, UK Slam Poet champ Dizraeli and LeeN on freestyle vocals (Beardy considers him to be the best freestyle MC in the whole wide world!). How will this show differ from the One Album Per Hour shows and indeed Beardyman’s previous tours? “The Dream Team are some of the best freestylers on the planet and together we improvise live compositions based on the audience’s song title suggestions. It’s a blank slate with weaponised telepathy, we create worlds within worlds together with infinite possibilities” - Beardyman

The Magic Lamp

Be transported to far off lands with a truly magical alternative to pantomime and an ideal family treat. The Magic Lamp is the story of a blessed and beautiful boy who, through serendipity alone, ends up with a lamp-dwelling genie at his disposal. Taking a traditional Iraqi variant and using an ancient Middle Eastern version of the text, Indefinite Articles approach Aladdin in a unique way. Played out in a Bedouin tent with a set filled with billowing silken drapes, this bewitching shadow play is told using light, paper and oil. From these simplest of ingredients, Indefinite Articles conjures up fantastical characters, shimmering transformations… souks, caves, palaces and deserts choreographed to haunting original music. Recommended for everyone aged 5+

From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads Written and Directed by Adrian Berry on what would have been david bowie’s 70th birthday, and on the anniversary of his passing, Adrian Berry’s acclaimed sell-out production about a young David Bowie obsessive comes to The old market. Martin is a boy with problems - an illness no one understands and a head full of sound and vision. So when an unexpected gift arrives on his birthday, Martin embarks on a thrilling journey in the footsteps of his obsession, leading him to discover some long-hidden truths about himself. What follows will change his life forever... Powerful and touching, music and magic realism collide in this darkly funny and moving tour-de-force solo show featuring Alex Walton and the voice of comedian Rob Newman. With a blistering Bowie soundtrack, the life of the pop fan is dissected in this tale of unnatural teenage wildlife. This brand new and updated production sold out runs in London, Edinburgh and Germany.
