Welcome to

COVER:

winter ‘17-18 SHE'S BEHIND YOU! What happens when you ask an anarchic band of brothers-incomedy to write a panto? CINDERELLA AND THE BEANSTALK (p14-15) by TOM favourites Sleeping Trees, was a five-star hit at Theatre503, and it's coming here with a brand new cast. Bring your kids, your nan, your workmates and other assorted drinking buddies, as this is a laugh-until-you-cry panto for everyone, without the clichés. Oh yes it is! Children (and their nostalgic adults) will be delighted by MISCHIEF AND MYSTERY IN MOOMIN VALLEY (p16), where the titular marshmallowy creatures that have charmed several generations are brought to life through evocative puppetry, sets and costumes created true to the original artwork by Tove Jansson. Our cult film series TOM'S FILM CLUB chimes in on the Christmas theme with Tim Burton's alternative yuletide classic BATMAN RETURNS (p12). And with a season that also celebrates the films of LUC BESSON (p17), DAVID LYNCH (p16) and the recently departed HARRY DEAN STANTON (p11), you'll want to come more than once. Snap up a two-film saver (£10) or a season pass (£24). And as for our own traditions... Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a familiar shameless plug, so here it is: Give a theatre nut you know the gift of a TOM'S FRIENDS membership, so they can get savings on TOM's shows all year round, while you get to feel all warm and fuzzy from supporting our lovely venue. TOM’s Film Club Presents:

Forbidden Planet (1956) The first of our audience requested films is Forbidden Planet, a film which has long endured as one of the finest science fiction films of the 1950s. Directed by Fred M. Wilcox, the film follows Space Commander John J. Adams as he journeys to the largely unexplored planet Altair-4 in search of a previous expedition which went missing many decades prior. Upon arriving to this new and mysterious world, he encounters the brilliant but arrogant Dr. Morbius, his daughter Altaira, their versatile metallic servant Robby the Robot, but no other signs of life, with the reasons soon becoming clear. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and a pre-Airplane! and Naked Gun Leslie Nielsen, Forbidden Planet boasts some superb monster effects (created by Disney animators), the first all electronic musical soundscape in film history, and overall an extraordinary scale unmatched by many films of its era, and still continues to impress and influence audiences to this day.

Jinkx Monsoon & Major Scales:

The Vaudevillians

After selling out an often-extended OffBroadway run, Australian tour and London run at Soho Theatre, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon heads out across the UK with The Vaudevillians, a bawdy, rowdy musical comedy co-starring composer and musician Major Scales. Throughout the 1920’s Kitty Witless and Dr. Dan Von Dandy toured the United States as The Vaudevillians, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. One day, while touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow - instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to Global Warming, they recently thawed out only to discover that pop artists had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their songs, performing their music as originally composed. It’s a vintage cabaret with a twist of drag.

“The laughs are jam-packed and the musicianship is flawless… It’s an expert blend of comedy, song and theatre and I’m going to do my best to see it a second time.” ★★★★ Time Out, Melbourne “Straight or gay, everyone leaves this show with sides aching from laughter.” The New York Times “Intelligent and entertaining… Jinkx Monsoon and Major Scales are the millennial Kiki and Herb” TheaterMania

Batman Returns (1992) This Christmas, we’re showing a special 25th anniversary screening of an alternative yuletide classic. Before his comeback in Birdman but after his breakout in 1989’s Batman, Michael Keaton played the Dark Knight in Tim Burton’s significantly darker, but altogether more Christmas themed, Batman Returns, plus fantastic support with Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken. After doing battle with Jack Nicholson’s Joker in the first film, Michael Keaton’s Batman returns to Gotham City to face the Penguin (DeVito in a genuinely tragic and sympathetic performance), who conspires with corrupt businessman Max Shreck (named after actor Max Schreck who played Count Orlok in F. W. Murnau’s seminal silent masterpiece Nosferatu) to make himself mayor. When the tycoon (Christopher Walken) tries to kill his secretary, she returns as a vengeful vigilante, referring to herself only as Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer, in one of her most iconic roles).

Cinderella and the Beanstalk A festive treat for those who like their Christmas panto with a twist. Comic playwrights and all round Christmas enthusiasts the Sleeping Trees have written a pantomime. They’ve knuckled down, finished the script, fashioned the props, hired the costumes, booked the venue and built the set. But they have forgotten one vital component; a cast.

Cinderella and the Beanstalk is a delectable cocktail of your favourite pantomimes. Follow Cinderella on a perilous adventure as the scheming Rumplestiltskin blackmails the would-be princess into retrieving the coveted golden eggs from the top of the beanstalk. Cinderella must complete her quest in order to recover her glass slipper, but with Prince Charming, the Fairy Godmother, Jack’s pregnant cow and several other lesser known characters all doing their bit to get in the way, these delicious, oversized eggs may not be so easily sought out… Sleeping Trees Productions started life as a multiaward winning comedy trio who, following a number of hit shows, were challenged to write a pantomime by their director, Tom Attenborough. The result is this original and anarchic Christmas offering for all the family, which blends the classical elements of a well-loved pantomime with an astonishing range of fast, physical and bareknuckled comedy. Join a brand new cast for 2017 as they recreate every character you’d expect to find in a pantomime, as well as some you might not… whilst still doing their best to sing, dance and fight their way through one hundred minutes of panto pandemonium.

Tom’s Film Club presents:

Luc Besson mini-season We’re kicking off 2018 with a retrospective of French auteur Luc Besson, a key figure during the Cinéma du look movement in France in the 1980s, and one of our favourite directors going into the 1990s.

The Big Blue (1988) Luc Besson’s The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu) is a loose retelling of the friendship and rivalry between Jacques Mayol (played by Jean-Marc Barr) and Enzo Maiorca (played by Besson regular Jean Reno) as they competed in world championship diving competitions over a twenty-year timescale. Described as "one of the most significant cult movies of the 1980s" by French Cinema historian Rémi Lanzoni, this underwater odyssey has long endured as a classic film of Cinéma du look, and often considered to be one of Besson’s very best.

Nikita (1990) After hitting the big time with The Big Blue, Luc Besson went in a different direction with his next feature Nikita (La Femme Nikita), a neo-noir which would establish a common theme that would run through much of Besson’s future films: a femme fatale assassin as a main protagonist. Starring Besson’s former wife Anne Parillaud in the title role, a former junkie sentenced to life in prison for shooting a police officer in the face, but only to have her death faked while in prison so that the government can train her to be a talented and accurate assassin, naturally. Also starring Jean-Hugues Anglade, Tchéky Karyo, Jean Reno and the late great Jeanne Moreau.

The Fifth Element (1997) Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, TOM’s Film Club is proud to present this screening of Luc Besson’s smart satirical and ultrahip sci-fi flick The Fifth Element (Le Cinquième Élément). A bit like John McClain in Die Hard, Bruce Willis’ taxi driver / special forces major finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time when a young woman (Milla Jovovich) falls into his cab from the sky, and she also happens to be the key in preventing the world’s future destruction. Also starring Gary Oldman, Ian Holm and Chris Tucker as the memorably eccentric Ruby Rhod!

Mark Thomas: SHOWTIME FROM THE FRONTLINE Tour Preview Name the comedian who might say 'I wonder if I can set up a comedy club… in a refugee camp... in Palestine?' Of course, it’s Mark Thomas. And that is exactly what he tries to do.

Dodging cultural and literal bullets, Israeli incursions and religion, Mark and his team try to establish a Comedy Club and put on two sell out nights in Jenin in the West Bank. Only to find that it is not so simple to celebrate freedom of speech in a place with so little freedom. Will he succeed?
