Motorman’s Tips, Tricks, and Techniques – March 2018 Between my videos, my weekly tips on YouTube and my monthly articles, I get plenty of questions via email. When I start to get some of the same questions over and over, it’s time to take the top three and put them in this monthly column. Lately, I get a lot of riders asking if the techniques, head and eyes, the friction zone and the use of the rear brake will work on the new Goldwing with an automatic (DCT) transmission, since it has no clutch, thus, no friction zone. Well, of course! Head and eyes, i.e., turning your head and eyes and looking in the direction you want to go always works and has nothing to do with what type of transmission you have in your bike. In fact, it works with motorcycles, cars, skiing, and even surfing. You will go where you’re looking. Since there’s no clutch to worry about, for the most control at low speeds, bring the throttle up a bit and put a little pressure on the rear brake to help stabilize the bike at low speeds. A few weeks ago, a rider with a Yamaha FJ1300 with the auto transmission came to my class and I tried his bike out. I found that using 3rd gear, along with a little throttle and a bit of pressure on the rear brake made making tight, low speed, maneuvers very easy. Using 1st or 2nd gear with the Yamaha’s sensitive throttle was more difficult, but 3rd gear was the charm. On the Goldwing, see which gear works the best for you. The next question I get a lot is, will using the friction zone cause excessive wear and tear on the clutch? Well, if you keep your throttle at 1500 rpms and light pressure on the clutch as I advise in my Ride Like a Pro video, the answer is NO, it will not cause excessive wear on the clutch. Motorcycle
16
clutches are cooled with oil and designed to be slipped at low speeds. The better you get at manipulating the clutch and throttle, the less pressure you’ll need on the rear brake. With enough practice with the friction zone, you’ll probably notice you can eliminate the rear brake and still be in perfect control of your bike. The thing that causes excessive wear on the clutch is revving too high while in the friction zone and putting a lot of pressure on the rear brake. Since the clutch is a wear item, eventually, you will have to replace your clutch. I recommend Barnett clutches. I use them on my training bikes that get a lot of abuse and they last twice as long as the stock clutch and usually cost less than a stock unit. The next most popular question is, “I know I’m not supposed to use the front brake when making low speed turns, but my bike has linked brakes, when I use the rear brake, it applies front brake too; what am I supposed to do?” First, let me say that Harley’s linked brakes are not linked until 20 to 25mph. Since low speed turns and maneuvers are below 15mph, Harley’s linked system has no effect on the technique. On most other bikes equipped with linked brakes, putting light pressure on the rear brake has very little effect on the front brake. If you’re using so much pressure on the rear brake that you can feel it affecting the front brake, you’re pressing way too hard. So, cut that out! If you have a question, shoot me an email, motorman1857@yahoo. com. To receive my weekly YouTube tips, subscribe to my YouTube channel, Ride Like a Pro, Jerry Palladino. You will be notified whenever I post up a new video. Till next month, get out there and practice! I’ll be performing with my Ride Like a Pro team at the Leesburg 2018 Bike Fest in Leesburg Florida April 27th – 29th. We’ll be in our regular spot, the USB Bank parking lot, so, bring some friends, enjoy our shows, and have some fun while watching the team whip our bikes around like a bunch of Pro’s! What a great time we had in Daytona Beach for Bike Week. Tons of bike shows, cold weather and record crowds. We got to do tons of riding out to Flagler Beach, Cabbage Patch, the Speedway and every place in between. Since most of you know that I am a new rider, this was especially fun for me, getting to log some miles with the Full Throttle family during Bike Week and getting to meet all of the people that make this the best job out there. When I retired from the Navy last year, I wanted to do something where I can be around other veterans, and I haven’t been disappointed. We ran into Ron and Stephanie out at Boot Hill Saloon one frosty night, I was wearing my flight jacket and they followerd us all the way to the end of Main St., we started talking and they were both retired Navy Chief’s, well Ron eventually went to the dark side and retired as a Lt.Cdr, but we won’t hold that against him. Stephanie lived the good life as a Mech in the VP world and also retired as a CPO. It was an absolute pleasure to get to chat with these two and reminisce about the “good ‘ole days” especially since Ron and I did a deployment together back in ’01 and never new each other. Saturday at the Daytona Speedway, Tony and I got to judge the Hot Leathers Bikini

Contest (tough job I know) We were joking around with the couple behind us, and they were both retired Navy CPO’s , willing to help us judge the contest the best we could. (My apologies on not having names and rates, other than Joel Washington, still going through everything I brought back) All in all, it was a great trip and part of the reason I decided to join the Full Throttle staff. I want to wish all of my Brothers and Sisters out there, either deployed or at home, a very happy 125th CPO Birthday, “Ask the Chief" is a household phrase in and out of the Navy. The exalted position you have achieved exists because of the attitude and performance of the Chiefs before you. It shall exist only as long as you and your fellow Chiefs maintain these standards. Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and we will see you in Leesburg! Invest Smart Ride Safe www.fromwallstreettomainstreet. com 754-MONEYAM This month we are going to talk about a few options that may help you derive meaningful income from your hard-earned dollars while reducing risk, as well as ways to effectively position your money and optimize your interaction with Uncle Sam. I know a lot of people that love to ride, and most of the time, riders that have successful journeys make sure they have gas in their tank, provisions in their bags, and an understanding of the roads they are about to travel down. With retirement nearing for many in our biking community, it is increasingly vital that you carefully examine your financial gas tank, investment provisions bag, and your map for the financial road ahead. This means, understanding the income level you will need, how long you may need that income to last, and what challenging tax implications you could be facing in retirement? Have you ever wondered how your investments could generate income for life? Well, there are several investment vehicles that can provide you with income for life, but you may need a vehicle that also has the opportunity to grow your principal. Many of my clients are enjoying the benefits of in-
creased income while still retaining the opportunity for principal growth. Speaking of retirement, some of my clients have decided that they are now ready to sell their business and/or real estate assets (rental homes, apartment complexes, commercial buildings, etc.). We call this getting rid of the toilets, trash, and tenant obligations. In some cases, selling your real estate investment holdings could cost you as much as 35% in taxes, but I have been helping my clients with situations like this throughout my career. So, when it comes to selling your real estate or your business, contact us PRIOR TO the sale so we can explain your options and explore the possibility of never paying a dime in capital gains tax. This could help preserve your sales proceeds, remove your property management obligations, and capture an income level that may otherwise be greatly reduced. So, whether you are rolling over your retirement assets, selling your business, selling your real estate investments, or receiving a settlement from an accident, I will use my expertise and work diligently to make your principal work for you as hard for you as you worked for it. I take a helicopter approach to investing that includes every aspect of your financial house including your income, tax situation, and family legacy. With so many options out there, it is hard to determine how to get the most from your money without specialized advice. Call me, I can help. (754-MONEY-AM) HAPPY RIDING! Cell phones, we all have them now, but how badly do you need to use them while you are driving??? Say you just left work and your boss text you and says "text me back immediately". What would your response be? What would your options be? Obviously you want to answer your boss as quickly as possible, but are you willing to risk your life or the life of another to answer your boss? We all know the correct answer to this question but do we actually do the right thing? Most people do not, myself included. This includes stopping at a red light and using the excuse that your stopped so it's ok to text. Truth is your still in a motor vehicle, the engine is still running and it is still illegal. Statics show that 92% of all drivers nationwide with cell phones have used them while in a moving vehicle in the past 30 days. Florida drivers received the 2nd worst score for driving while distracted. According to the State Department of Highway Safety and ;Motor Vehicles. There were almost 50,000 crashes involving distracted driving in Florida, which is more than 5 crashes per hour. This accounts for more than 3,500 serious injuries and 233 deaths. These numbers may not be accurate though. If your involved in an accident would you actually tell law enforcement that you were distracted by your cell phone, 48
or would you do as most people and cover up the fact that you were doing something illegal? This definitely would put the numbers much higher. As the clocks tick away this years state legislative session, a "Texting while driving" bill remains stuck in traffic. The concern of passing a law that will completely ban texting while driving is this. Senate feels it will give Law Enforcement more control and power. Also it will infringe on your privacy. If an officer stops you after he has seen you texting, he would have to go through your phone to prove that you were texting. This would be considered a privacy infringement. Although Law enforcement can't pull you over for texting while driving as an offense on it's own, in Florida, texting while on the road is illegal and can result in a fine or ticket. But only if they pull you over for another reason, such as failure to stop, speeding, running a light. Etc. Etc. It also brings up the question of, Is your privacy more important than your life or the life of another? With all this said, I am throwing out a challenge to everyone including myself, PUT THE PHONE DOWN, Send me a pic, write it on a piece paper, let me know that you are accepting the challenge!!! Tell me your story!!! The Challenge is there, YOU ONLY HAVE TO AGREE TO IT.. The life you save may be your own! My email is -Conniefullthrottle@gmail.com I look forward to hearing from you! What's shaking my fellow rider's? I hope that if you went to Bike week last month you had a blasts and returned home safe. As Tony and the guys where relaxing on the east coast I was back here at the fort holding it down J-sizzle style by meeting and hanging out with some really fantastic people. I especially have to give a big shout out to Kelly from Irish Kelly in Tarpon Springs for having me and my wife out on St. Patty's day. Man what a great time we had and I can't wait until the 5th for their next bike night. I also have to send some love to the guys over at Outlet Tires, Brakes & Mufflers in New Port Richey for helping me out with a blowout I had on my truck that same day. 100% professional service is exactly what I received at their shop. Gracias fellas. I'm also very siked about some new bike events that I'll be throwing around the Tampa bay area. Starting with a biker brunch on the 1st Saturday of every month beginning in May in south Tampa

On Thursday April hauler, will be at all of the events. Until next month, 19th is bike night. Full remember to ride safe no matter what you ride. throttle will be here. The band will be the Keelhauler six-string south band, there will be a 10-class SHUT UP AND KINGFISH
Razor sharp teeth, speeds that will Smoke your reels and did I mention they can fly? Yes, now is the season of the Kingfish a fast and fun way to spend the day out on the water. These fish are usually Green Water fish, which means they are going to usually be somewhere between the shore and where the water color changes. They range from a few feet long to over 6 feet long and can reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour when they are challenged. Quick as underwater Torpedo’s they also Skyrocket onto their prey, shooting up to 10 feet out of the water to land a meal. When you are fishing for King’s you better remember to set your Rig up right, I like Stinger Rigs with a skirt. Baits that can be used is a Sardine, Ribbonfish or a Blue Runner (live). The best thing to do is mix it up with the Bait’s, you never know what they are going to hit on. You are going to be trolling so if you are pulling Dead-bait a good speed is between 1 – 7 knots, pulling Live-bait you want to be going about 2 knots so they don’t spin and look un-natural. Remember a key mistake a lot of anglers make is to troll to fast, especially with Live-bait. To be successful you want to try and put at least 5 rigs out, you want 2 on your Down Riggers, 2 off your T- Top about 150-175 feet back and I love to have one in the Prop Wash, I get lucky with that a lot.

Once you start catching your Kingfish and you are noticing that they are not getting any bigger, you need to leave and find the big ones. The larger Kingfish do not hang out with the small Kings, go deeper or maybe even move shallower, just MOVE. Just like our significant others we need to get the Kingfish in the mood so remember a great Chum Slick is key. A lot of angler have their own secret recipes so feel free to try a few things out, like Menhaden Oil and even some glitter. The best way to chum is one scoop at a time, once that disappers drop in some more. Even when you have a fish on keep chumming it keeps the other King’s in the area and you increase your odd’s of landing the prize winning Kingfish. One last thing before I head off shore to catch my own Kingfish is remember to check your Drag, to tight and you will get broken-off. The key is to bump him to the surface, take your time you will wear him out, and make sure whoever is handling the Gaff they need to know what they are doing. It is really refreshing considering it’s only a few months out of the year and only time we all get to wear our gear without looking like a hot mess! Ok…. guys you all don’t care about that but us women do and happy wife happy life… right?? Keith will be able to tell you all about it lol. Speaking of happy wife…we did get back some of our wedding pictures and I promised I would share some…hope you enjoy them. Now Bike week was fun, as always. Hope everyone was able to see or participate in the many bike shows that Full Throttle organized. They always do a great job and thank you for a great time! Keith enjoyed them since he was able to participated on the other end this year and was judging the sound competition at Grandview Live. Now I know he was reluctant of doing it and had to be persuaded….. Not!! lol. He does love to help any way he can and has a passion for sound systems since we do install a lot of them but seriously, Bikes and Babes all in the same place, you had him at Hello Tony! Lol. The fun finally came to an end and back to the BIK shop to work on all the customers bikes that were patiently waiting until after bike week ended. Keith has been always busy in the shop working long hours and week ends and finally decided he needed help. We would like to welcome Jon Beck to the BIK staff. Jon has years and years of experience, but he comes to us as a certified Harley Davidson Technician. We hope you enjoy working with us as much as we have so far. I want to probably personally thank you for giving me my new husband

Hi Everyone! It was another great event month in south Florida! Didn't get to attend the Daytona Rally as the south Fl. calendar was full of so many events to attend! Miccosukee casino resort put on a great Music Jam located on the Tamiami, western outskirts of Miami-edge of the Everglades. Great music festival that included the Southern Uprising tour featuring the Outlaws,Marshall Tucker Band,Charlie Daniels band and Travis Tritt. This also included a free BBQ and beer sampling! This venue really knows how to put on an awesome event & only a couple times a year, so check it out ahead of time ! Rode to Founders Day Cooper City's 60th B-Day Celebration which featured parades, antique car show, food trucks, community performances, art booths and business expo. including BSO police & Fire Expo. - it even shut down the town for all the ongoing festivities. MNG ( MR. Nice Guy) one of our local favs. played @ the Brian Piccolo park as fireworks went off in the background- very kool! Following the Blues Society Jams- we attended an awesome night of Blues with Albert Castiglia, an American Blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. Castiglia has varioulsy worked alongside many well known Blues artists, to name a few Sandra Hall, Sugar Blue, Pinetop

Perkins, the list goes on and his latest albums have catchy titles; 'Get your Ass in the Van', 'Let the Big Dog Eat','Up all night'Castiglias 7th album. Nobody sleeps when this guy's in town with his Smack in the mouth Live shows, this South Fla. Blues leader is master of the red-raw, sweat & hair Blues that gives it to you straight- check him out! Attended the Keltics Annual at JP Mulligans which is always brings a large attendance with many of Sth. Fla. MC clubs. Great to see everyone and catch up, music by one of our local favorite classic rock & roll bands -'Hired Gunz' and guest performer Kent Bam Bam of Soulicide- You guys Rock!! Always a good time! Rode out to Cafe' 27 to help host the benefit ride put on by Cartels baggers, this was to support the Stoneman Douglas tragedy that has saddly affected our community. It was a great turnout and a percentage of the days sales went to this benefit. Music by Soulicide - who always brings in the crowd! That's it for now -more from KJ's Korner next month! Lets enjoy the ride & keep the rubber on the road! *** If you would like to advertise- Please contact me @ KJ.FullThrottleMag@gmail.comSouth Fla & Miami
