Here’s a cool scientific experiment you can try at home kids. The next time you’re out cruising around on your motorcycle, find an empty parking lot or deserted road. Place a plastic cone, empty soda can, etc., on the ground. Get about 100 yards away from the can or marker while getting up to 20 or 30 mph, look right at the marker and try to hit it. You should find that you can hit it every time, regardless of your speed, if you keep looking at the marker. Why? Because your hands naturally follow your eyes and your hands will steer you right into whatever you’re looking at. This will work on your motorcycle, car, skateboard, ski’s, etc. This phenomenon is both good and bad news. The bad news, if you’re on your motorcycle coming around a curve and you look at the double yellow line, you’re going to run across that double yellow line. The good news about this phenomenon is if you look where you want to go, which in this case is towards the end of the curve, you will go there. The problem, your instincts tell you to look at the very thing you don’t want to hit. The only way to correct your instinct is repetition. You must practice turning your head and eyes to look ONLY where you want to go. The easiest way to do this on your motorcycle is to find an empty parking lot and begin turning big 100’ circles in both directions. Do not use any markers and make sure there is nothing to hit such as concrete parking space markers or potholes. A good way to do this is to circle around a light pole. Two big circles to the left then two big circles to the right. As you get comfortable, start tightening up the circles. When you get down to about 30’ circles, move away from the pole and just keep turning your head and eyes over your left shoulder, then your right shoulder. In essence, you’re looking behind yourself like an Owl throughout the circle. I’ve heard people say this is difficult because “I feel like I’m not looking where I’m going”. That sensation occurs because as I stated, your instincts are wrong. If you’re turning a circle to the left and your head and eyes are looking over your shoulder to the left, you are looking where you’re going. It’s your brain that’s telling you to look straight. Since there’s no straight part to a circle, obeying your brain will cause you to turn your head and eyes straight ahead and since the hands will follow the eyes, you will wind up pulling out of the circle and going straight ahead. As looking over your shoulder gets easier, draw an X on the ground with chalk or duct tape. The idea is to start making big figure 8’s. You want to run over the X. Every time you run it over turn your head and eyes and try to find that X again. It doesn’t matter how big your figure 8 is, the point is to train yourself to look at where you want to go. In this case, where you want to go is right over the X you drew on the ground. The sooner you find that X, the tighter your figure 8 will become. You will also get very good at transitioning quickly from left to right and right to left. With an hour of this type of practice, you’ll get darn good at looking only where you want to go. Soon, technique will overcome instinct. Till next month, get out there and practice. Jerry “Motorman” Palladino www.ridelikeapro.com copyright 2017 Jerry "Motorman" Palladino

“CREATURES OF THE NIGHT” “KISS AMERICA” the hottest “KISS” tribute band going. As a kid I was madly in love with Peter Criss, waited patiently for my 8 Tracks to arrive from Columbia record and tape club, loved when we got near a music store so I could buy all the newest albums, asked my Mom to paint my room black with KISS on the walls in white ( she said no…) and drove my family crazy with the “Destroyer”. Since we only had one 8 track player, after removing the Barry Manilow 8 track of my Moms…it was all “Detroit Rock City “.I was over the top to see “KISS AMERICA” play last month at Thunder by the bay. Neil Davis (Gene Simmons) graciously let me interrupt his yard work to tell us more about the band. “KISS AMERICA” has been around for over 12 years , play about 10 shows a year due to the fact that they bring the real show, fog, fire spitting, stage set up with all the original “KISS” special effects and then some ! It’s not something you can do every weekend. They rehearse weekly and always try to bring something different to each show, it varies depending on the setting, wind and set up times. Their stage crew makes the magic happen too. I cannot wait to see what I heard the were bringing next to the EXPO. Neil told me at age 12 the original band “KISS” was his inspiration to learn guitar. He was the fanatical Kiss fan and didn’t get to paint his walls black either, but he had a Gene Simmons Birthday cake! All the members, George Cross, Neil Davis, Shawn Schuman and Ken
46
Trapp, have played since they were kids. In his off time George Cross (Ace Frehley) works building custom Bikes at “Roaring Toys”, Sarasota and loves to ride. I have to go see that place! They say they the four happiest people at the show are them. It is like going to Disney World as a kid Neil stated. They are all family men, normal when not in costume and do not party like Rock Stars. Being me, I had to ask the funniest story and most embarrassing… You could say you do not want to be in Georgia broken down in a small town dressed in your Kiss costume, the local police will not know what to think. And if you are wearing 10 inch high boots, you better be able to laugh at yourself if you fall on your butt twice in a row on stage. I thought KISS AMERICA did an outstanding job at Thunder by the Bay, battling the wind and was grateful to connect with them, they are gracious to their fans, a class act. I was even more thrilled to find that they are booked for our “Florida Motorcycle Expo and Bike Builder Invitational 2017”,hosted By “Full Throttle” They perform Saturday Feb 18th, before our headliner “Quiet Riot” , and it’s all FREE! Well see ya’ll in Feb, for a long weekend of fun Feb 17th.18th 19th at Quaker Steak and Lube. And one last thing, All of Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte county advertisers and sponsors now have to put up with seeing me stop by monthly. I am here for all your needs, I look forward to meeting all I have not yet, I will be by to introduce myself and make some new friends I am sure. Also it’s a large area, Help wanted !!And Thank you Full Throttle for one year of the most fun job I have ever had!

I was hiking once with my girlfriend. Suddenly a huge brown bear was charging at us, really mad. We must have come close to her cubs. Luckily I had my 9mm pistol with me. One shot to my girlfriend’s kneecap was all it took. I could walk away at a comfortable pace. ************************* Bob was in a lot of trouble. He forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife was really pissed, and started to give him the business. She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE !!” The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box giftwrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Bob has been missing since Friday

Little Johnny comes down to breakfast. Since they live on a farm, his mother asks if he had done his chores. “Not yet,” said Little Johnny. His mother tells him no breakfast until he does his chores. Well, he’s a little pissed off, so he goes to feed the chickens, and he kicks a chicken. He goes to feed the cows, and he kicks a cow. He goes to feed the pigs and he kicks a pig. He goes back in for breakfast and his mother gives him a bowl of dry cereal. “How come I don’t get any eggs and bacon? Why don’t I have any milk in my cereal?” he asks. “Well,” his mother says, “I saw you kick a chicken, so you don’t get any eggs for a week. I saw you kick the pig, so you don’t get any bacon for a week either. I also saw you kick the cow, so for a week you aren’t getting any milk.” Just then, his father comes down for breakfast and kicks the cat halfway across the kitchen. Little Johnny looks up at his mother with a smile, and says: “Are you going to tell him, or should I?”
Barry returned from a doctor’s visit one day and told his wife Carolyn that the doctor said he only had 24 hours to live. Wiping away her tears, he asked her to make love with him. Of course she agreed and they made passionate love. Six hours later, Barry went to her again, and said, “Honey, now I only have 18 hours left to live. Maybe we could make love again?” Carolyn agreed and again they made love. Later, Barry was getting into bed when he realized he now had only eight hours of life left. He touched Carolyn’s shoulder and said, “Honey? Please? Just one more time before I die.” She agreed, then afterward she rolled over and fell asleep. Barry, however, heard the clock ticking in his head, and he tossed and turned until he was down to only four more hours. He tapped his wife on the shoulder to wake her up. “Honey, I only have four hours left! Could we...?” His wife sat up abruptly, turned to him and said, “Listen Barry, I’m not being funny ..but I have to get up in the morning and you don’t!.”

We lost a Brother in the Wind last month. Rob “Triple Threat”, Cartwright. Robs name is added to the hundreds of bikers that we have lost, 546 in 2015 according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle Department. Every morning I dread opening FB or turning on the news or reading the paper for fear of seeing a face I know, hearing a name that is dear or recognizing the remains of a familiar bike. Motorcycle fatalities are skyrocketing we all know it, we feel it our bones and in our hearts. Freshman House Representative Don Hahnfeldt’s response to decreasing motorcycle fatalities is to introduce and file HB 6009, a bill mandating the use of helmets. Helmets or the lack of helmets don’t kill, the wreckless distracted drivers speeding, failing to yield right away, texting while driving or making illegal U-turns do. HB 6009 will not solve or even attempt to address the problem. I am an advocate of Freedom of Choice. I have issues with a bureaucratic agency, non-bikers telling me what I should or nor not wear while riding my bike. I like to see and hear my surroundings and have found DOT helmets to be restrictive and diminishing to my peripheral vision and hearing but that is my choice. What works for me does not mean it will work for others. I also have issues with the false sense of security that is taken with a DOT standard helmet. Under the DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 218 helmets are not tested by the NHTSA, rather helmets are tested and certified by independent manufactures and labeled DOT signifying compliance with FMVSS 218. FMVSS 218 specifies three tests for compliance Impact Attenuation, Penetration Resistance and Effectiveness. The standard specifies dropping the helmet from 4.5 ft to 6ft to reach speeds of 17-20 mph. Most of the motorcycle fatalities and accidents typically occur at speeds in excess of 20 mph. Three years ago I was hit from behind by another motorcyclist at a 45-50 mph. The DOT helmet I wore did not protect me from sustaining a skull fracture and stroke. Rep Don Hahnfeldt is not a biker. He does not know the call of the open road. He does not 52
know the fear when a cage comes barreling at you. While I applaud the fact that he is concerned about motorcycle fatalities I am curious as to why he did not feel the need to talk to bikers about the problems we encounter on the road. We could have told him we need real solutions not another piece of legislation to appease special interests. We need real solutions such as legislation that will put teeth into the Vulnerable Road User Act, increasing penalties for killing us. Punish the drivers that are hitting us, don’t punish us for expressing our freedom of choice. Why should cagers care about us when obviously Legislators, the State and Judges don’t? Until there are real enforceable consequences instead of slaps on the wrist for violator’s cagers will continue to hit us. All HB 6009 will accomplish is strip bikers of their freedom of choice and deprive the state of millions of potential tourism dollars. HB 6009 was filed just days after Rep. Hahnfeldt was sworn into office. The Bill was referred to the Transportation and Infrastructure Sub-Committee.

Wow! How neat! Do you ever think of “Why didn’t I think of that?” While you say to yourself, duhhhh… This month I had the pleasure of interviewing the ONE and ONLY STEVE “FINZ” FINZELBER of FINZ FINDS RIDES
Facebook: finzfindsscenicmotorcyclerides Facebook: floridasbestmotorcycleevents
Sarasota, FL E-mail: finzfinds@gmail.com
www.finzfinds.com 941-928-1060 Steve (or “Finz”) just wanted to get out of traffic and go for a scenic ride. He started out by just jotting his route down for himself. He had a stack of papers, so he made a notebook. Pretty soon his friends wanted a ride out of traffic. As a matter of fact, several years ago at West Coast Bike Fest in Bradenton, he sold his books right out of his motorcycle! Finz didn’t even have a vendor tent set up. He just put out a small display of books and just talked to people that came by. But back up…I’m getting ahead of myself here. I wanted to know if that was the only thing Steve HAD to do (riding bikes and scouring out scenic rides all over the country... (Where do I sign up?)… Turns out that Finz DOES have a real job. He is a Systems Engineer for a company up north (Eddiez’s Blinds & Drapery and 3 Day Blinds). Steve only does FINZ FINDS RIDES on the weekend. John Campbell (Steve’s partner in FINZ FINDS RIDES) also is an IT Manager for the same company. Steve started FINZ FINDS RIDES in 2009. His main thing was to get out of traffic and find the hidden gems in Florida. FINZ FINDS RIDES will NEVER take you on a highway or busy street. Back roads all the way, baby! FINZ FINDS RIDES will NEVER take you on a gravel road or dirt roads or dead ends, or any congested areas! Finz started out locally doing the back roads of Sarasota on his 250 Scooter. From then on, it just grew and grew. It’s taken Steve three years to put together the FLORIDA BOOK. Florida has many sections, so he had to split it up into several sections. Now Finz is expanding to other states as well. Steve loves it when he comes along a big dealership and can “pick” their brains when it comes to rides for his book! “I’ve gotten a lot of the Southeastern states done which took about 8 months for each state (Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina). Now they’re going digital. FINZ FINDS RIDES books can be found on-line with a flash drive. FINZ FINDS RIDES has a phone app too! With that, you can finish one ride, and the phone knows exactly where you are and can guide you to a new place to ride too. E-mail or cell phone is the best way to reach Steve. Steve has been in several other magazines too: Scenic Ride Consultant for BORN TO RIDE, WING WORLD (for Goldwing Magazine), Thunder Press, and Southern Steel. Finz has been interviewed by S&N News, ABC 7 and 11, FYI Sarasota, and Suncoast View (mostly about THUNDER BY THE BAY). Finz lived in Key Largo (for 8 years) and was an underwater photographer! Steve was always on boats and loved the feeling of the breeze, wind in your face, just the feeling of being “free...” When he moved to Sarasota, “I didn’t have a boat, so I figured a motorcycle would give you the same feeling.” Then I would have transportation that would get me really good gas mileage! Bonus! ” My Yamaha V Star is my main form of transportation. I do my grocery shopping on my bike too! I always wear a helmet. It would be crazy NOT to!” Steve has been in several movies (as an underwater photographer)! He worked on TV shows: Sea Quest with Roy Schneider, Swim With Dolphins program in Key Largo (Steve even had an exclusive contract to film the dolphins! How cool is that!). He did a lot of stuff for the news…Connie Chung, Dan Rather, Nightline…”I supplied them with a lot of footage when they did a story about handicapped kids swimming
56
with Dolphins.” I met a lot of famous actors… the whole cast of Cocoon, Wilfred Brimley, Jessica Tandy, Steve Guttenberg, Rod Stewart…a lot of people would come swim with the dolphins, and I would be their photographer. Finz is originally from Chicago where his mom and sisters still live. Growing up, his sisters always were “at it”, so that left Steve to get into a lot of mischief! He left home at 18, moved to FL never to look back! Finz didn’t like the cold weather. He doesn’t like traffic or people that don’t pay attention when driving! He is inspired spiritually by DeePak Chopra…as a way to live your life. Steve graduated from University of Miami. He has two sons Ryan (25) and Cole (22). Ryan is a Lighting Designer for all the big shows in Tampa, St. Pete, and Sarasota. Cole works with me for Eddiez’s Blinds and Drapery. Finz (61) has known Lucy Nicarandi for quite some time now. It was only natural that she asked him to Chair for THUNDER BY THE BAY Cruise for Cash Ride. He helps her out with many other charities also. In 2014, Paul Senior of Orange County Choppers was the honorary guest of Thunder By The Bay. Finz was responsible to guide him from the cemetery into down town and then take him on a scenic ride around Sarasota…just the two of them. WOW! Neato! What does FINZ FINDS RIDES offer? Finz says, “I like to offer riders a way to stay out of traffic and to avoid riding with cars!” It’s a much safer ride, and it’s NO FUN ridin’ your bike with traffic! When you only have a few hours (or less than that) to ride, I want to provide you with maps to take the back roads, get out of traffic, and ENJOY THE RIDE! His most favorite bike events are THUNDER BY THE BAY (of course!) and GIBTOWN Bike Fest. Gold Wing events are really good. It was through my association with the Gold Wing riders that inspired me to go into different states. They ride cross country. What are your future plans? “To keep up digitally and electronically. A lot of my customers like to keep it old school and ride with maps.” That’s good too, because you never know when your GPS or cell phone will mess up. It’s good to have a back-up copy of WHERE YOU ARE GOING! (Nancy’s opinion!). Newer motorcycles are coming out with a huge GPS built right in. I don’t always like that. I’m old school…I put my map on my tank and go turn by turn. There’s a lot of left and right turns in my books. If you miss even just one turn, it will put you on a dirt road or dead end! Describe yourself in three words: Smart, Stupid, and Creative Three things you love? I love riding, music (I play guitar), and I can’t ride without music. My helmet is wired. If I forget my helmet, I’ll go back for it! Three things you dis-like? Distracted Drivers! The laws concerning vehicles and motorcycles. That’s gotta change! It just drives me nuts when a car hits a motorcycle, and just gets a warning or citation! And being bored! What is your greatest achievement? My family! What was your first bike? A 250 Scooter What is your overall favorite bike? Yamaha V Star because they’re dependable! I started with a 650, but now I ride a 950 Yamaha V Star Touring.
chances!
If you were starting over right now, what would you do differently? Probably take more
Anything else you’d like to say? If you’re looking for some back roads to ride on, just look us up either on-line, call me or e-mail me. On Facebook, I always post updates. I’m always looking for new places to go! All of our books have destinations and restaurants, and events. Up in Alachua / Suwanee County (where my new territory will be), Finz even has rides up there! There’s even one that was put together by Mike’s Horse Ranch Tour. Finz tweaked it, took out the dirt roads, and it’s a nice ride indeed. Its 3 hours long! I’m really happy that I got to sit down with Finz to do an interview…he’s an amazing man! ******* Til next issue, Nancy p., Full Throttle rep. Ride Safe, and RIDE WHENEVER YOU CAN!
