Motorman’s Tips, Tricks, and Techniques –

Moving up to a bigger bike

I often hear from women riders wishing to move up from their present motorcycle, anywhere from a 250cc to a 1200cc ride, to a full-size tourer. Their question is, “can I handle the heavier bike?” This is an impossible question for me to answer since I don’t know their skill level. If you’re a skilled rider, in other words, you know the proper techniques, the extra weight of a touring bike won’t make a bit of difference. For proof, you can watch any of my Ride Like a Pro videos. In those videos, you’ll see several tiny women on the biggest touring bikes, handling them with ease. However, if you’re riding a Sportster now and can’t make a simple U-turn without duck walking the bike around, then you’re certainly not ready for a 900-lb. touring bike. By the way, this goes for men as well as women. If you can’t ride well on the bike you have now, getting a bigger, heavier, bike will make things worse, not better. Keep in mind also that having the ability to ride straight down the road at 50 or 60mph does not make you a skilled rider. Just because you can start off from a stop without stalling and falling over and accelerate to highway speeds means very little. You also need to be able to lean, turn, swerve, and stop quickly. Without those skills, you’re just a crash looking for a place to happen. With that said, assuming you can handle your current ride with skill and comfort and you don’t have to start duck walking your bike around as soon as your speed drops below 20mph, you could be ready for a heavier, more comfortable bike. So, what motorcycle would I recommend for you? Again, it’s difficult to say. But, let’s assume most of your riding consists of 75 to 150-mile day rides with a group of friends and only an occasional 300 to 500-mile ride, you really don’t need a 900-lb. tourer. A good choice would be a Harley Dyna Switchback or any of the Dyna models. I mention the Switchback because it comes standard with hard-bags and a windshield. The other Dyna models would have to have these items added at extra cost. Unfortunately, the Switchback production stopped in 2016. The good news, plenty of dealers have leftover 2016 models that I’m sure they’d like to move. The Harley Dyna models are much lighter than the FLH Harleys and handle low speeds, where most riders have problems, with ease. In other words, the Dyna models are very nimble at low speeds, lower to the ground and offer almost as much highway comfort as the bigger bikes and are available with ABS which is a life saver. Over the past few months I’ve had several riders come to my class on Dyna’s, most of them women. They tend to pick up the proper techniques much faster than riders on the heavier touring bikes. If you’re not stuck on cruiser type motorcycles, there are many other choices available from BMW, Triumph, etc. There are many Japanese cruisers available in the 1300cc range, however, none offer ABS as an option yet. Whereas Harley, BMW, and Triumph do offer that option. Rumor has it that in 2018, all motorcycles must have ABS as standard equipment, but for now, it’s just a rumor. If you’re not aware what ABS is, it’s Anti-Lock-Brakes. With ABS, if the bike is straight up, you can apply maximum braking force on any surface without skidding or locking up the tires. This is a life saver for even highly skilled riders. For the average rider, I consider ABS mandatory equipment. Till next month, get out there and practice! With the market at an all-time high It is critical you understand who is investing your money, why they are investing in certain areas and wondering where it really is? Do you remember 2008 and how long it has taken to recover from that disaster? Probably not! “Because”all of a sudden things are looking great. The majority of people I speak with especially here in Florida also don't understand that there are vehicles that can help you shelter your dollars. I was also astounded at how many people do not have a will, power of attorney and or provisions for their children. I am here to be your voice of reason, you are depending on it. Some people asked me, well how do you know when markets may turn or should I leave it under the mattress or even just as bad the bank earning nothing. With the average rate of inflation over the years running around 3%. Why would you want your money to earn nothing? So what is the answer? If you don’t know or cannot tell someone where your money is invested you need to call me, to sit down with you so I can explain in simple terms what this talk of the markets and political turmoil mean to you and your retirement savings or settlement accounts. Markets move in cycles and almost without fail they have had corrections about every 7 years. We are way overdue and some analyst are saying it looks like pre-market correction numbers. There are no real macro or micro economics to uphold what we are seeing in the Dow and the S and P. It is inflated exuberance meaning everybody feels good and 1 quarter (the last quarter of the year had good earnings) You really need to know more than ever what makes markets move one way or another. It could be a simple statement from a political situation on a certain subject or news about the global situation. Interest rates have been very low for many years and with the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on a quarterly basis.

30

We are in uncertain times with a new administration and a new house. Markets do not tend to like uncertainty. It is being held up by people thinking they can make a fast buck in the equity markets without looking at the possible risk associated with it. The FMOC is looking to start raising rates again, which has a very definitive effect on the average consumer every time however it can be a positive in the bond arena if you have floating income. If rates do go up and we have a trade war (which has been rumored) it could affect your investments in a negative way. I always believe in being cautious. As your mother told you if it’s too good to be true it usually is so there are ways to protect the hard earned money you have saved. Also if you have money in the banks your rates won’t be affected positively for a very long time as history has proven it takes a long time for bank rates to catch up with rising interest rates. To start making better returns on those monies you need proper allocation. There are even ways to take your money near retirement and lock in those gains and still keep working if you are over 59 ½ and have a 401k with that option. The markets and 2017 is going to be a very VOLITALE year. Make sure that you get the most return for your money and be smart about the investment whether it is retirement, a settlement from an accident, your 40lk that you have left at another company, or your current retirement if you are nearing retirement. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH “QUIET RIOT” LAURIE JO HIGGINS WITH FRANKIE BANALI As I awaited the bands arrival from the airport, watching Kiss America perform…I was nervous. I had to keep reminding myself, this will be no different than any other celebrity, but I had no idea what to expect. All I knew was the music I loved and the screen persona. As the band arrived and began set up / sound check, I introduced myself to Seann Nicols (the newest vocalist/ member of this Iconic band, who had the look I recognized of a hungry musician who just ate pretzels on a flight .I asked if he was hungry, he said he was starving. I then asked Frankie Banali if he wanted to grab a snack before the interview, he said no we all will eat after…I could see the sound check was going to take a bit, so I grabbed a few plates of food from the buffet and hurried them back stage. As Frankie approached me ready to talk( he does all the interviews) I offered him one, he said “ I’m a vegetarian” as he looked at the wings and sloppy joes I brought ,I wished I had googled more. He asked if we could find a quiet spot and pointed to the Full Throttle cargo trailer. I had no idea what I would find in it, there was one folding chair thankfully not broken and an empty milk crate. I quickly told him I knew most of the specifics, I wanted the good stuff…he asked me if I had watched the “Quiot Riot” documentary his wife (then fiancé) Regina Russel had done "Well Now You’re Here, There's No Way Back"…I said half of it, I have teenagers and I am lucky to watch the weather and I want to hear what you have not given others. He said let’s go…so here it is… My first question was what’s the craziest thing that has happened during your years of performing…Frankie laughed and said “Its Quiet Riot, it’s always crazy ,every show!” I said alright, most embarrassing moment. He replied that during his very first headlining act he had a three tier stage set up and was to start playing as Rudy ,Kevin and Carlos were supposed to be elevated up on stage as he opened on drums. As he began to play, he never saw them, looked around and saw only the heads of all three. Turns out someone used three cheap drills to set it up and they were stuck . As mortified as they were, they laughed their ass off after the show. I went on to craziest fan, he said “well he is not crazy but a man named Kevin Boyber has collected every piece of memorabilia made, he

has things I do not even have! We still keep in touch”. The other thing he shared was that two girls in a yellow corvette followed his entire QR3 tour and were at every stop the bus made before they(the band) even knew they were stopping! I asked about the lifestyle of a Rock Star, knowing how tiring it can be…he smiled and said “Even if I am dead tired I still go out and meet the fans. I owe all my good fortune to our fans, there is no grey area at all, it’s all them no grey area.I have been in this business since age 18, it was my dream and all I have known. I managed the band, performed so I have seen it from both sides. I get it and there is absolutely no bitterness in me after 47 years.I don’t take anything for granted. It still matters, they still matter. The set up , sound checks are a crazy time but as soon as I start to play all the noise in my head stops and it is just the music and the fans.” I asked if he planned to retire anytime soon, “I will be tapping my favorite Led Zepplin song in my coffin” he joked, and then said “that’s just something I say, I plan to be cremated. I do not want to pollute this earth any more than it is, I am an organ donor too. ”I liked him even more. Working my way to the biggest questions I asked him his favorite venue. He stated it was Madison Square Gardens, but because it is personal. “I am from NY and as a kid my fondest memories were my Mother taking me to see Ringling Brothers Circus there, and my Father who was in the union was able to get us ringside seats to all the fights, if there was blood on the mats, it was on us too!” I asked him about the end of the Ringling era, he said he was sad, but felt for the animals too, he is a vegetarian for the same reason. I asked him what he loved most about the circus, “The Tigers”. They are such amazing creatures he said as he was recalling his childhood. Then I knew I was ready for the big one. What are your thoughts on God? He got quieter, and said well I was a student in a Roman Catholic school until I was kicked out, those penguins really did slap my knuckles, often! I said you didn’t answer my question…His voice got softer, and he said “well I believe, but I question.” What do you mean I quietly asked. He got the look I know all too well from losing my own parents and said “well I question why my Father had to suffer from cancer and die at age 55,as well as my Mother as his voice started to crack, “I question why Kevin( Dubrow) had to go the way he did too. I know it was an overdose, but I question why God let it happen that way. I believe, but I question.” He told me no one could have been more surprised that Kevin

died than Kevin. You could see the pain in his face so we wrapped up for a little while. I said you must be hungry let’s eat. I asked if he wanted some take out to eat in the tent, then I said apologetically, you probably do not want to eat out of Styrofoam boxes you do that enough. He nodded and said we’ll eat in the restaurant(Quaker Steak ,our venue).I said well let me get you a table first, those girls are so young, I don’t want them to not recognize you all and put you on the wait list, he laughed and I headed out to find him a table. Shortly I returned and said I was right, they are so young they don’t know what you guys look like! As I walked them through the crowd less Seann who ate my sloppy joes, they graciously stopped for a few autographs and our band liaison quickly caught up, I apologized for sneaking them off, when Quiet Riot says they are hungry you just go with it. As I sat there trying to make sure they could eat in peace with Lisa our liaison, they again stopped for pictures, autographs I said enough, the Mom in me wanted them to eat. As we went to leave through the sea of people to head backstage, I could see the crowd approaching, I said hold my arm they are scared of my Biker husband, he is a sweet guy but they won’t come up. The crowd parted and not one autograph request, he looked at me with disbelief. The conversation backstage then turned to me, he was sick of talking about himself, he wanted to know all about my family, my children. That conversation is off the record as I am in teenage hell, he kept giving me the knowing looks saying ,”Been there, Been there.” “She (Ashley his only child) is 22

now.” I said you survived?…We joked about girl scout cookie selling and he asked where my husband was ,I said he had to miss to take my youngest son camping with the Cub Scouts. He told me how grateful he was David my husband had skipped as scouts was so much more important. I could see his shoulders hunched over and asked if he was hurting, he said a little, so like I do with my coworkers I grabbed his shoulders and worked out the knots. He asked more questions, I answered…he really is just like everyone else. A member of the press who had booked an interview approached and asked if he was ready, he said not until she quits. He meant it. I said you need to take care of yourself better, look at the knots, he said I know, I know. I asked him how often he got to see his wife of just over a year, he said as often as I can excitedly, I am going home for three weeks! He is doing 50 shows a year and they are still newlyweds. I said well I guess I had better let you go back to the next person in line… he looked disappointed, I give a mean shoulder rub. During the show he grinned as big as one can, at me as I was working on another coworker, (we all had a long day.) He was gracious until the end signing and taking pictures with the fans until the venue was almost empty of fans. All of the band members were gracious and did so , despite knowing they had a 4am airport run. A class act and by far. I can’t wait to pass along one of my rare Ringling Tiger Trainer pins. Life does come full circle as I always say. Look for their new album ”Road Rage” in April.

Hi All...I just sat down from the weekend of "Fun" or I really need to say working my a$$ off. Yes, I mean The Full Throttle Motorcycle Expo. The magazine put on the biggest three days of fun for everyone to enjoy. If you missed it, I'm sorry. The bikes, the vendors, the bands the Wall of Death....wow, so much there. Gotta Havit Insurance sponsored the ride in bike show where over 70 bikes made it for that premium parking too!! When I had time, I walked around to check on vendors, say Hi and see how they were doing. One of the vendors is a very special person who supports the biking community with her purple stickers....'Look twice save a life'. Diane Pearson is also known as Mother on a Mission. She had given us a case of the purple stickers at the beginning of the event and her husband came back by Sunday morning because they had run out and needed more!! They gave away over 1,200 bumper stickers!! It’s time for Daytona Bike Week and Anne & I will be at the Ocean Center for the Full Throttle Vendor Showcase for most of they 11 days, BUT, don't forget the Boardwalk Bike Show on Friday, March 17th & the Daytona International Speedway Bike show on Saturday, March 18th. When you are over in Daytona, be sure to stop in and see us. Till next time......Live life to the fullest and party your a$$ off......Dew

Welcome to the back-yard bikers. What an amazing Florida Motorcycle Expo it was. Every band brought it full throttle all weekend. Quiet Riot put on a great show. Thank you everyone who came out to the Expo. Daytona Bike Week is coming up fast. I’ll be EMCEE’ing again at the Legendary Boot Hill Saloon. Come by and see me and check out one of the best music line up on Main Street on the Michelle Osborne Stages. Also, make it over to the Ocean Center for the Full Throttle Vendor Village. Then it’s off to Panama City for Thunder Beach Spring Rally. Again, I will be at Boardwalk Beach Resort so make you reservations to join me there. Check out the Boardwalk add in this month’s Full Throttle for all the details. Ride safe and always remember to keep your stick on the ice. MONGO. 44

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, So I got my doctor’s permission to Join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.. But, by the time I got my tennis shoes on, The class was over.

********************************* Apple announced today that it has developed a breast implant that can store and play music. The iTit will cost from $499 to $699, depending on cup and speaker size. This is considered a major social breakthrough, because women are always complaining about men staring at their breasts and not listening to them. *********************************

A brand new store has just opened in New York City that sells Husbands. When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance: “You may visit this store ONLY ONCE! There are 6 floors and the value of the products increase as you ascend the flights. You may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you CANNOT go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the 1st floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men have jobs. The 2nd floor sign reads: Floor 2 - These men Have Jobs and Love Kids. The 3rd floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids and are extremely good looking. “Wow,” she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the 4th floor and the sign reads: Floor 4 - These men Have Jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Good Looking and Help with Housework. “Oh, mercy me!” she exclaims, “I can hardly stand it!” Still, she goes to the 5th floor and sign reads: Floor 5 - These men have jobs, Love Kids, are Drop-dead Gorgeous, help with Housework and Have A Strong Romantic Streak. She is so tempted to stay, but she goes to the 6th floor and the sign reads: Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.” To avoid gender bias charges, the store’s owner opens a New Wives store just across the street. The 1st first floor has wives that love sex. The 2nd floor has wives that love sex and have money. The 3rd through 6th floors have never been visited!

Three men were discussing aging at the nursing home. “Sixty is the worst age to be,” said the 60-year-old. You always feel like you have to pee. And most of the time, you stand at the toilet and nothing comes out!” “Ah, that’s nothing,” said the 70-year-old. “When you’re seventy, you can’t even crap anymore. You take laxatives, eat bran, you sit on the toilet all day and nothing comes out!” “Actually,” said the 80-yearold, “Eighty is the worst age of all.” “Do you have trouble peeing too?” asked the 60-year-old. “No, not really. I pee every morning at 6:00. I pee like a racehorse on a flat rock no problem at all.” “Do you have trouble crapping?” “No, I crap every morning at 6:30.” With great exasperation, the 60-year-old asked, “Let me get this straight. You pee every morning at 6:00 and crap every morning at 6:30. So what’s so tough about being 80?” “I don’t wake up until 7:00.”

"WAY DOWN UPON THE SUWANEE RIVER, FAR, FAR AWAY, THAT'S WHERE MY HEART IS TURNIN..." I just luv it up here! There is virtually NO TRAFFIC! I guess it's all relative. Talking to some of the locals, they say the roads are getting congested. The weather is GREAT! It is less humid! With moving and all the stress that goes with it...for those readers who have ever moved, you know what I'm talking about! There is the anxt of trying to sell your home, putting everything in storage, the open houses, trying to keep the house clean as you are moving your stuff out...not knowing if it will sell...AND WHOLA! Thank the GOOD LORD IT IS SOLD! Then you think you're worries are over...NOT! Then comes the little thing of "where are you going to stay until your new house is built?" We had thought we had that all figured out til the place we were GOING to stay was all booked up (yea, go figure...we had reservations too!). Instead, we stayed at THE RAMADA INN, LAKE CITY 386-7526262 3340 West US HWY 90, Lake City, FL 32055. If you need a place to stay, I recommend to stay here. The whole staff makes you feel welcome! But with everything going on, I was still able to meet these wonderful people at: ALACHUA COUNTY GAINESVILLE HARLEY-DAVIDSON ( Emilee , Cory, Brandon) 352-331-6363. 4125 NW 97th Blvd., Gainesville, FL. 32606 COLUMBIA COUNTY HIGH PERFORMANCE CYCLES (Jeff Jerome, owner) 386-755-4453 426 E. Presents West Volusia's Best Destination During Bike Week

Saturday March 11, 2017 Historic Downtown DeLand | 10am - 6pm

Free Bike Parking • Vendors • Shopping • Live Music Ride-In Bike Show • Antique Motorcycle Gathering For More Information Visit: www.delandrally.com 69

Hi, I am Brett Sadler. I am a native Floridian, born and raised in Tampa, FL. While that might not be all that unusual now, I was a rare animal growing up in the Bay Area. My wife and I moved to Flagler Beach 3 weeks before Hurricane Matthew ravaged the East Coast. It was interesting times to say the least. We are always looking for a good ride, a fun place to hang out, and new experiences. The First Coast is turning out to be that for us. If you aren’t familiar with the term, First Coast, let me explain. First Coast refers to the Florida coastline from Flagler County to the Florida/Georgia state line. This seven, county area is referred to as the First Coast in honor of St. Augustine, widely recognized as the oldest city in the U.S. I started working with Florida Full Throttle in January to extend their reach to the First Coast. My challenge is to cover 80+ miles along A1A to bring you the best of Northeast Florida. I have a big task ahead of me but look forward to getting to know the area and sharing my experiences with you along the way. My goal is to connect you with the Northeast Florida Motorcycle community by providing information on great places to go, events to be a part of and local areas of interest to explore. I would also like to help motorcycle enthusiasts in the area connect through events and happenings so they can form bonds that hopefully lead to lifelong friendships. Safe journeys everyone. See you at Bike Week!

Riders with back and leg injuries such as veterans, tall, short, or older riders can have a hard time mounting and dismounting touring bikes with luggage boxes on the back of the bike like Harley Davidson’s Touring Models. The rider is constantly kicking the box or the speakers that wrap around the passenger when mounting and dismounting the bike. Joe the Founder of Bandits Innovation’s noticed the problem with these motorcycles and saw a solution in 2015 while selling motorcycles. There was no product on the market addressing this issue so Joe proceeded to make one. Many of Joe’s friends are veterans, serving overseas and coming back to the states with back and leg injuries making it difficult to mount and dismount their beloved motorcycle. The only way one of Joe’s best friends could get on and off the bike was by taking the Tour Pak off his Ultra Classic. Furthermore while Joe’s daughter was attending a funeral, she observed the passenger assisting the rider’s leg over the seat due to the Tour Pak in the way. Joe’s daughter’s observation solidified Joe’s vision. Fast forward a few years, now Joe’s best friend can mount and dismount his Ultra Classic with his Tour Pak on because of Easy Mount. This product allows 22 more inches of room for the rider’s leg to swing over the seat and rear fender without mounting the bike in a painful or awkward position. Built and Assembled in Michigan, Easy Mount gives the most room for the rider to mount and dismount their motorcycle. Easy Mount raises and lowers the luggage box using a wireless remote controlled actuator and is backed by and industry leading 15 month warranty. Easy Mount uses a Plug-N-Play design that requires no fabrication to your motorcycle. Easy Mount is available for the 2009 through 2017 Harley Davidson Touring Models right now. Soon to be Available for Harley Davidson’s Tri-Glide and Indian’s Roadmaster.
