On THE COVER
QuAil HOllOW BikER BASH MAY 25TH quiailhollownow.com
I love the month of may and I hate the month of May. I love it because it is really the beginning of some great weather here in Florida and all the great events are happening and my birthday is in May. I hate it because of those damn pesky LOVE BUGS!!!! be careful riding out there and if you are going on the back roads be sure to have a full face helmet or at least a bandana to keep the bugs from smacking you in the face. One of the best jokes I know about love bugs is from Charlie Three Finger.... He always said in May he would get extra ketchup and mustard packets from a drive through and keep them in his pocket when he is riding... he would open them and smear them on his teeth because it made the love bugs taste better.... eeewww... no thanks! I would like to take this time an explain a little of how I think and the direction of Full Throttle Magazine and our MISSION STATEMENT. We are a magazine for motorcycle enthusiasts and our goal is to inform you on upcoming events, products, specials, sales and information for the forward progress of the motorcycle community. I do not always have the room to do recaps and post pictures from events in our magazine. I believe that is where our website and social media pages work best. In fact our Facebook page is getting over to 4,000 new likes a week and the past few months we have grown to over 65,000 likes/fans on our page at press time. We work hard to keep all the great info for the motorcycle community and events posted on our facebook page and we like to post funny and entertaining stuff up there also to keep everyone enjoying our daily page! If you haven't liked our facebook page yet, then please do, search Florida Full Throttle or go to www. facebook.com/FLFTmag. I would like to welcome a few new advertisers to the Full Throttle Family this month. Our cover this month is a company that has emerged in the motorcycle community as a great venue for events and now has Full Throttle Helping them do some promotions, QUAIL HOLLOW. This is a great place and location for poker runs and parties. Please come out to their Biker Bash on May 25th with Full Throttle Magazine. We would also like to welcome BLACK WIDOW HARLEY-DAVIDSON to the magazine as well. Balc widow is a great dealership in Port Charlotte next to the Rays pre season field. We are very excited to have them advertising with us. Also Full Throttle will be hosting a new THURSDAY NIGHT BIKE NIGHT at Winghouse in New Port Richey. This is an awesome location right on US 19 and they are really wanting to do this bike night up right with tons of vendors, free give-a-ways, contests, live music, food and drink specials and much more! The Winghouse Bike Night is in conjunction with SKY POWERSPORTS and Full Throttle and will be on the First Thursday of each Month. Upcoming dates are June 5th & July 3rd. We hope to see you there! There are a lot of great birthdays in the Month of May, I would like to say Happy birthday to Bill Church and his sister Barb, Jeremy Venham, My Aunt Debi (Love ya aunt Doodoo), my sister in law Christine, John Gaston, Diane Pearson and George Talmadge. OH YEA AND MEEEEEE!!!!! :) I would also like to wish Big Al a fast recovery from a surgery and minor stroke he recently had. With a little therapy he will be back to his old grumpy self soon enough and we couldn't be happier! Get well soon Big Al! Be safe and be smart and don't so anything stupid! Don't drink and ride and I'll see you soon!

Welcome back to another addition of the Back Yard. Summer is here and bike events are coming at us fast and furious. But in April I got to host two of my favorite events of the year. We started out the month with the Pediatric Cancer Foundation Poker Run. Weather was a little cool but rides came out to do the run and then the party heated up. We had some great give-a-way, but the top prize was an autographed Stratocaster Guitar signed by the band Vixen along with tons of local musicians and celebrities from the bay area. Congratulation Laura Lynne Butterworth on winning that one of a kind guitar. Then, we all came together for the 5th Annual Special Olympics Pinellas Poker Run at Quaker Steak & Lube. This is my favorite event to host every year. I love these kids that come out and enjoy the day and they love seeing the biker community come out to support them. We had tons of
40
great stuff to give a way including loads of Tampa Bay Rays tickets. This year we had Pro Wrestling Legend Bushwhacker Luke Williams come out and joins the event along with Daredevil Legend The Florida Flyer Bob Gill. The kids loved meeting them and thank you to both Luke Williams and Bob Gill for greeting the Olympians and signing autographs for them. Well, that's about it from the Back Year. Got to get the Ole Harley ready to whoop it up at Leesburg Bikefest and Thunder Beach Spring Rally in the merry month of May. And remember fellas, If your girl don't find you hansom, At least let them find you handy. Ride safe bikers. Charlie

Hi All. I am here at Bourbon Street in Newport Richey sitting down with Anthony Arnold - the new owner! He is also the owner and publisher of Tampa Bay’s Mayhem Magazine which covers the local music scene. He took over Bourbon Street and has brought new life back to this once famous live music venue which was the premier live entertainment spot in Newport Richey hosting acts from all types of music genres - blues, classic rock, hard drivin', and newer artists as well. Bourbon Street is a great venue to see your favorite musicians. Anthony wants Bourbon Street to once again be the best venue in Pasco County, where musicians look forward to playing and customers have the opportunity to enjoy a live show on one of the Bay Area’s best stages with a 13,850 watt permanent professional sound system with professional lighting. In addition to having famous musicians perform here, Anthony supports the local musicians as well. Bourbon Street isn’t just about live music though. It is also a neighborhood hangout with fantastic food. On Monday’s they have $5.00 Burger & Fries Specials ALL DAY, Tuesday after 7pm it’s 10 Wings & a Pitcher of Beer for $10.00 …$3.00 Fireballs and $5.50 Angry Balls. They also have 12 flat screens TV’s, 2 pool tables, dart boards and other vending games for their customers to enjoy. Bourbon Street is the place to hang out with friends for a few drinks enjoy some lunch or dinner and take in some live music. So, come on by! Till next month Live Life to the fullest and Party you’re a$$ off..Dew

Well Big Al with the magazine had a blockage in the artery behind the ear which formed into a 90% blockage and they had to operate, but it was not a complete success and Big Al Had a stroke. He is now in therapy and recovering. He should be able to come home. See you soon Big Al. I,m not doing well ether. I rode my scooter to the office today and thinking about when I was young myself and a couple of friends has Cushman Scooters. There was a grouchy old man that did not like us riding up and down what he called, His Street. He cussed us out every time he seen us so one night we got 44
some horse poop and put it in a paper bag. Put it on the mans porch and set it on fire. Rang the doorbell and ran like hell. We loved watching him stomp that paper bag. We did that a few more times the next few weeks, He got in his car and chased us so we gat a rope one night and tied it to his car and the back steps of his house. Back then most steps was wooden. Guess you know what happen to the steps. We got a big laugh out of it. But the old man give up on chasing us. What else would you expect of us young boys back in the 1950's. My friend Gary went down on his bike a few weeks ago, Get well soon Gary. See you soon Cindy.
Every now and then you happen across a business that deserves to be bragged about. A place you feel the need to tell someone about. So, with that being said let me tell you about a couple of good people that run Quality Value Auto Repair and Transmissions . The shop is located at 1325 E. Jefferson street, Brooksville Fl. 34601. Phone # 352-544-6340. Murl is the owner and has been a Master Tech for over 40 years. Kit is his better half and his very capable shop assistant. Murl says he's been turning wrenches for 49 years. He says he specializes in transmissions but can fix just about anything with four wheels and a motor. I happen to believe him. The man knows what he's talking about and will treat you right. The next time you need some work done on your car or truck, look up Murl and Kit. It will be worth your drive to Brooksville.

April was a busy month here at Full Throttle Magazine. On the weekend of the 4th I turned another year older than dirt. On Saturday , Florida bikers helping Florida bikers hosted the world record attempt by Black Suns bass player Rusty. Record was accomplished!!! Yea Rusty! On Sunday I attended the Nature Coast Biker Bash at High Octane Saloon in Homosassa. Good people, Good music, good times! On the weekend of the 13th I attended the Showdown in the Snake Pit at Venom 2 in Hudson. While there I met a nice bunch of ladies called Chicks in the Wind. They where having a bunny run poker run for the less fortunate. They had 33 people show up for there run and collected enough goodies for 32 children and 16 women. Great job ladies! Next weekend is Leesburgh Bike Fest. Look for the Full Throttle tent and stop by and say hello! Till next time. Stay safe. Red Ryder

again. Craig says that “not everyone can intuitively do this, its hard to rationalize this and i feel like my experience has taught me how to move past this trouble.” The team at Project Road Warrior feels they can leverage this experience to help other people that have fallen on hard times in the military due to injuries or medical reasons succeed at life. Project road warrior feels that they can use these types of journeys and adventures as a critical step in the rehabilitative process. They want to replace some bad memories with some really good ones in an effort to help folks have some new things to focus on. How did this start? It's a long story. Craig learned of an event called the Scooter Cannonball Run that was going to take place in June. This event was going from Hyder Alaska to New Orleans. Craig and Steve decided they were going to do that ride…then realized the opportunity to do it for charity. Eventually taking it a few steps further, they started spit-balling ideas on how to do the cannonball run and bring some fellow wounded vets along for the ride. This all stems from our frustration with the current system where charities are growing to be big business, we are starting out and plan to maintain at a manageable level staffed by all volunteers and never plan to take a salary or spend money on frivolous items. We are committing to ensure that everything we get goes exactly where it’s needed. We strive to keep our spending down and commend the many businesses and individuals that have helped us with donations of bikes, gear and other necessities that will make this possible. With this concept in mind, Project Road Warrior Foundation has paired up with the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Craig and Steve really respect this organization due to their ability to keep overhead low and ensure money goes where it is intended. Project Road Warrior has been working with them and also utilizing them as subject matter experts in how to run a charity and be successful as a non-profit. Along with the idea of responsible spending comes one of the main reasons we are doing this. Craig was an Air Force pilot and was forced to give up the cockpit due to medical reasons. “it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, one day I was in charge of a $350M airplane and the next my wife had to drive me to work.” Craig struggled to make sense of the why and how of what his life now was, the one thing he is trained to do, the best at, he can no longer do. Events such as this gave him the opportunity to get out, forget about the trouble and feel the same sense of independence
50
When Craig is not doing charity, he works at US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) primarily with the Care Coalition, an organization that cares for the wounded ill and injured troops They decided to reach out to the Care Coalition to see if they could get some wounded veterans to ride with them ons the scooter cannonball run. That idea exploded with the Care Coalition. Mid-November, Craig and Steve deciding that they would need to establish a charity if they wanted to see this become a realty-- Project Road Warrior was born. Craig and Steve brought Orlando Acosta onboard and kicked this event into high gear. At this point Project Road Warrior was going to take 6 Care Coalition members on this scooter ride. After looking at the logistics and rules associated with the Cannonball Run, and being asked too many times on why would they stop in New Orleans and not the east coast, Project Road Warrior decided to do their own event. At that point they were going to ride scooters from Seattle to Tampa (with a stop at Jacksonville- touching all three major bodies of water on this ride). Steve took a trip to Florida to visit Craig (Orlando was working in the middle east) and to meet with potential sponsors. A week after that they were told BRP wants to help us accomplish this event on Can-Am Spyders. A lot of credit is due to Barney’s Motorcycle and Marine for lining up the Spyders. Other companies that have proven pivotal in making this a realty are Reeves Import Motorcars, Harrell Home Services and Duct Doctor USA. Reeves is working with Enterprise Rent a Car to provide a support vehicle and Duct Doctor and Harrell Home Services are sponsoring the entire trip for one rider respectively. The lessons learned by Project Road Warrior Foundation have been many and often. There are so many different aspects to planning a cross country ride and 10 events in 10 days. The logistical concept is a bit of a nightmare. Our military experience has well prepared us for these tasks and Craig and Steve’s program management backgrounds are key in ensuring schedule and cost are all managed. With all the very generous individuals and companies that have been more than willing to dip into their personal time and resources to help the Road Warrior Ride become a success, this promises to be the first of many outstanding events for a very deserving group of individuals.
Project Road Warrior was founded by three friends, veterans, citizens and patriots looking to do more for their fellow soldiers in need. Steve, Craig and Orlando identified a gap in the services and support provided to wounded soldiers, sailors and airmen. There are just more veterans in need than resources to support and without people interested in helping, there are many heros that simply fall through the cracks. We do not feel it should be that simple, and vowed to do something about it. Project Road Warrior Foundation plans to utilize the skills and connections earned both in the military and business worlds to raise awareness, funding and support for these deserving individuals.

ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA This month I had the pleasure of interviewing the owner of ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA, JOHN HAVELL. Located at: 2705 – 1ST Street Bradenton, FL 34208 941-745-9521 e-mail: john1@actionkawasakiyamaha. com ray@actionkawasakiyamaha.com www.actionkawasakiyamaha.com I asked John (who’s only 44 yrs. young) these questions: Actually, John bought the business from Jack O’Neill, but Jack still works there. Ray Baker and Jack answered most of the questions because John was a tad bit late (he went jetskiing which he usually does to get his day started off right*). *John Havell is quite the avid UPRIGHT JET SKI enthusiast (PRO). He was sponsored by Jack O’Neill when he first started in 1996. In 1999, he started working for Action Kawasaki Yamaha as a Sales Manager. Then they were only selling watercraft and a few motorcycles and ATV’s. Opened business when? 1995 FACEBOOK? ActionKawasakiYamahaSeaDoo Best way to reach you? Phone 941-745-9521 Have you been in any other magazines? Born to Ride, Road Racing. The dealership has been in multiple magazines both locally and nationally. What made you interested in motorcycles? RAY: I saw my first motorcycle when I was 6 yrs. old and the sound it made…it was the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life! Of course, motorcycles were forbidden in my family, so that made it even more interesting to me! I started working when I was 13, and my parents had a hard time getting me to work. Even though my parents were against motorcycling, my dad surprised me with a little motorcycle when I was 15. From that point on, I am just in love with motorcycling, the people that ride, and the “life”! Have you done any work for “famous” people? RAY: Actually, YES. But I prefer not to drop names because I’m still kinda helping out… What do you offer? RAY: Sales of watercraft, Can-Am Spyder’s, Kawasaki motorcycles, Can-Am Side By Side, ATV’s…we are a full service dealer. We offer dockside service of the watercraft. We have financing available for most of our products. Tell me about your family? RAY: I have been married for 26 yrs. I have 3 boys, but they’re spread out across the country. My oldest boy (Ray, Jr.) is a motorcycle mechanic at Precision Cycle. I am 52. JACK: I have a wife and a 28-year old son. JOHN: I have a son who’s 3, daughter who’s 4, and my wife (Brandy) who is an Office Manager at a Sleep Apnea Clinic. She also helps me around here sometimes! Who inspires you the most? RAY: Hap Poneleit. I used to work for Hap’s Cycle Sales. In fact, I had 18 years in with Hap’s. I’ve worked for Hap’s Cycle Sales ever since the ‘70’s part time when I was a teenager. He taught me a lot about people and motorcycles. Without his help and expertise, I probably would have never been in the motorcycle industry. What makes you different from most shops? RAY: I think it’s the feel of the shop whenever you come in. We are everybody’s friend. We want to spend time with you. We are just looking to make you part of our family versus just the “one time only customer”. We have a low overhead, so we don’t have a lot of additional fees that some dealers have. We can keep the prices very competitive.
52
What made you think of the name? JACK: My original partner had a very successful business in Miami named Action Jet Ski. We carried that name in our store in Venice, then came up here and named it ACTION JET SPORTS. Who are the other employees? 15 people employed here, but I’m not sure they are WORKING…Jack and Ray said laughing… Where are you from? RAY: Pittsburgh, PA (but he’s been here since he was 8 yrs. old). Do you sell aftermarket products? RAY: We do! Kuryakyn and a number of dirt bike accessories, Fox Gear, etc. What are your future plans? RAY: I’d like to stay here until retirement and then go up to the Carolina’s and ride motorcycles! Can you do warranty work? RAY: Yes…we do all warranty work for all the major brands that we sell. Do you have bike nights? RAY: No, we don’t at the moment; however, we have been talking to some of the restaurants, and we would like to start one. Parking is an issue…we don’t have any room… JOHN: Applebee’s (the second Thursday) has been building up. We have done a SPYDER night at Peggy’s Corral, and we might do another. Debbie, owner of Peggy’s Corral, just bought a SPYDER from us (this is her second!). We are going to have a SPYDER-only ride also! Of course, we have sponsored Quaker Steak and Lube just a couple weeks ago. Kawasaki had a big event and gave away a VaQuero! We would like to get some of the northern counties to come down and check us out! You really have a different kind of business here. Explain how it’s different? RAY: Our business is heavily watercraft oriented. We sell Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Sea-Doo watercraft - all of the major brands. We also carry the Can-Am Spyder which is a very unique vehicle. So that makes us quite different right off the bat; combined with the fact that we also carry Kawasaki Motorcycles. Kawasaki motorcycles have a very loyal customer base. The same as Harley-Davidson…they are like those customers. Once a Kawasaki, always a Kawasaki. JOHN: We are a mom and pop shop and not corporate or a franchise shop. So, I think, because of the multi-line (we are very diverse), and everyone who works here is an enthusiast (there is nobody who works here that just has a “job”). That makes us unique. Everybody who works has a motorcycle, watercraft, or both. So they can really relate to your concerns when you stop by ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA! Other shops around the area might have a salesperson who never rode a day in their life. It’s just a “job” to them. ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA is big into racing also – dirt bikes, watercraft, free style stand-up Jet Ski’s… We also help out the community be it Poker Runs, Charity Events, Riding Groups – even if it’s not something we sell, we still get involved. We give out gift cards, helmets, donations… whatever we have to do, we do it! Why is your shop different? RAY: We are not into HIGH pressure sale techniques. We want you to: find what you’re comfortable with, and we’ll take the time to find out exactly what that is. Describe yourself in 3 words? RAY: Does it have to be printable? JACK: Honest, Fair, Successful Three things you love? RAY: Motorcycles, Family, Friends JACK: Motorcycling, My Wife and son, My Life JOHN: My wife, My kids, My toys Three things you dislike? RAY: Rude people, Entitlement – people that feel they deserve everything instead of having to work for it, Front wheel drives JOHN: Unhappy customers, Stormy rainy days, Injuries What is the future of the motorcycle industry? JOHN: I see a little more interest on some of the youth which is good because of all the technology (cell phones, video games, etc.) that they are coming back to motorcycles. Kawasaki has market share right now because of the Ninja 300. It’s right under 70 miles per gallon, and the price is affordable at $5,000 for a good motorcycle! So we are gaining some of the youth back…people under 35 riding motorcycles, saving some money on gas, and ENJOYING RIDIN’! I think (we hope) to see an uptake on motorcycle buying, ATV, Can-AM, Jet Ski’s, all the things we sell! What is your greatest achievement? RAY:
cont. on next page
My family. JACK: My family JOHN: Yet to be determined, but Good Father, Good Husband . In the Powersports world, I was the first to do a no-handed back-flip in the waves on a Stand-Up Jet Ski on tour in 2000 Coronado, CA. John was sponsored by Yamaha (see, I told you he was a PRO! – now, that’s something to brag about!). What are your biggest regrets? JACK: I once had a guy sitting in my office and he offered me a huge amount of money to buy this business. I turned him down… What was your first bike? JACK: Kawasaki 350 RAY: Honda CL 100S JOHN: KDX Dirt Bike (Enduro) What is your overall favorite bike? RAY: I’m going to say something that’s going to surprise a lot of people…I’ve owned in excess over 200 bikes. I just love bikes of all kinds! Overall? KLR650. JACK: Check out www.24hourchallenge.com JOHN: I have a VINTAGE KAWASAKI KZ-750. I’ve owned that for 16 years! He doesn’t ride to work because he makes deliveries or needs his truck for something mostly every day. Almost the rest of the company rides their motorcycles to work! JOHN: ZX10R Street, KX450F Dirt and Kawasaki VaQuero Is it better to start out on a dirt bike or does it matter? RAY: If you can start out on a dirt bike, it will make you much better on a street bike because you deal with a lot of lack of traction and a lot of movement (sand, etc.) on dirt bikes. Do you have any plans to offer Indian Motorcycles or Polaris? JOHN: We have talked to Indian, and they want an exclusive dealership devoted to just selling Indian Motorcycles. Anything else you’d like to say? JOHN: Thanks to FULL THROTTLE (and magazines like yours) for being around to keep us up to date on the events going on, the different shops and what’s happening, and keeping us informed. That helps us and helps our business. We are thankful for that! It’s amazing…people are always talking about the internet, but people keep coming in to get FULL THROTTLE MAGAZINE! There’s nothing like a good motorcycle magazine! Anyone can bring up a picture of an event or motorcycle on their phone or computer, but there’s something to be said for a hard copy where you can see the motorcycles and people and read about articles up close.
Besides that, it’s better for your eyes too! At ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA, you can even sell your bike or trade it in…They are always looking for trade-ins or to purchase bikes. They have pretty much conquered the ATV and watercraft market; Now, their focus is on MOTORCYCLES. ACTION KAWASAKI YAMAHA is NOT BRAND SPECIFIC! They just LOVE TO RIDE! John says laughing, “they ¬PREFER you to ride a KAWASAKI”, but it don’t matter as long as you ride something! Even though John Havell is the OWNER (he snickers and says “he’s the OWER, sometimes JANITOR”…), it’s like a family here. Jack O’Neill has been a great mentor, and they (John, Jack, and Ray plus the 15 employees) work together. You can really see this if you stop by this wonderful shop. It’s sorta easy to find…as Ray likes to say: “Right across the street from Firkins”… (p.s. – you can even schedule an appointment to test-ride a CAN-AM SPYDER)! Which we will do (Eddie and me). I can’t wait!

I was born and grew up in Bloomington, Indiana where I attended Indiana University on the GI Bill after serving in the USAF. My first visit to Florida was in December 1968. I worked the door at the Elbow Room in Ft. Lauderdale in the afternoons for free drinks on Christmas and spring break for ten years. After surviving the "Blizzard of '78", I moved to Florida. Having started my own flooring business in 1969, I quit college after three years and ran that business till 2006 when I was hit by a car on my motorcycle. Realizing it was probably time to retire anyhow, I gave up the flooring business and bought a 2007 Street Glide which I still ride

with about 60,000 miles on it. I have now lived in Fort Myers since 1997. I'm a charter member of American Legion Riders Post 336 and served as Ride Coordinator/Road Captain for 5 years. I started helping my friend with selling magazines for semi- automatic weapons at gunshows on weekends so I'm now Assistant Ride Coordinator. Doing charitable acts for Veterans and active service personnel is very rewarding and I highly recommend joining ALR to any motivated rider looking for something to do in his/ her spare time. Being a four year cancer of the tongue survivor, I have a great appreciation for the VA Health system and recommend to young people they consider enlisting as an answer to rising healthcare costs. I would also recommend from past experience, skydiving (9 jumps) and SCUBA diving ( PADI certified since 1988). One day, a very gentle Texas lady was driving across a high bridge in Austin. As she neared the top of the bridge, she noticed a young man fixing to jump. She stopped her car, rolled down the window and said, “Please don’t jump! Think of your dear mother and father.” He replied, “My mom and dad are both dead; I’m going to jump.” She said, “Well, think of your sweet wife and precious children.” He replied, “I’m not married, and I don’t have any kids.” She said, “Well, then you just remember the Alamo .” He replied, ‘’What’s the Alamo ?’’ She replied, ‘’Well, bless your heart! You just go ahead and jump you little Yankee Democrat Bastard. You’re holding up traffic”.

******************************************** The madam opened the brothel door in Chicago and saw a rather dignified, welldressed, good-looking man named Jake in his late fifties. ‘May I help you sir?’ she asked. ‘I want to see Valerie,’ Jake replied. ‘Sir, Valerie is one of our most expensive ladies. Perhaps you would prefer someone else,’ said the madam. ‘No, I must see Valerie,’ Jake replied. Just then, Valerie appeared and told Jake she charged $5,000 a visit. Without hesitation, Jake pulled out five thousand dollars and gave it to Valerie, and they went upstairs. After an hour, Jake calmly left. The next night, Jake appeared again, once more demanding to see Valerie. Valerie explained that no one had ever come back two nights in a row as she was too expensive. But there were no discounts – the price was still $5,000. Again, Jake pulled out the money, gave it to Valerie, and they went upstairs. After an hour, he left. The following night Jake was there yet again. Everyone was astounded that he had come for a third consecutive night, but he paid Valerie, and they went upstairs. After their session, Valerie said to Jake, ‘No one has ever been with me three nights in a row. Where are you from?’ Jake replied, ‘ New York .’ ‘Really,’ she said. ‘I have family in New York .’ ‘I know.’ said Jake. ‘Your sister died, and I am her attorney. She asked me to give you your $15,000 inheritance.’

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
Motorcyclists make up less than 3 percent of the motoring public, and yet account for 18% of all traffic fatalities in Florida. It’s understood that motorcyclists are more vulnerable to serious injuries when they are involved in a traffic crash, but something needs to be done to reduce fatalities. “Look Twice, Save a Life,” “Watch for Motorcycles” and “Share the Road” messages have been out there for years and we still had 457 motorcyclists die in Florida as a result of traffic crashes in 2012. For the families of those 457 motorcyclists, 2012 was a tragic year. There were parents who lost the chance to be able to talk to their son or daughter at the dinner table again; brothers who are no longer able to tease their sister; wives who can no longer feel secure in the arms of their husband; daughters who will not be able to dance with their father at their wedding; and husbands who will never be able to ride a motorcycle alongside their wife again.
As riders, we have to stop placing the majority of the blame on motorists and take responsibility for our own riding. In 2012, motorcycle riders were at fault in 63.5% of motorcycle crashes in Florida that resulted in severe injury or fatality. Modern motorcycles demand a high level of skill from their riders: “Technological change for the motorcycle rider may demand heightened bodily agility and dexterity to handle the physical forces and consequences of faster accelerating (and stopping) machines, and to manage the risks of collisions with car-driver assemblages increasingly cocooned and anaesthetized from the presence of other road users.” (Pinch & Reimer) As we remind motorists to share the road with motorcycles, we would like to also remind riders to take safety into their own hands by riding S.M.A.R.T.
