Hi and welcome to the month of October! This is one of my favorite times of the year because the weather starts getting a bit cooler, the NFL is in full swing, the World Series is played, hockey season starts and one of my favorite holidays of the year happens ... Halloween! One more event can be added to my list of "Why I Like October" and that’s the annual Biketoberfest Rally that happens in Daytona. Once again Full Throttle will be there in force with multiple tents set up around town. I like Biketoberfest better than Bike Week as it is more Florida oriented and the crowds are a bit smaller. Bike Week sometimes gets too crowded and riding from place-toplace becomes a pain in the ass. Make sure you stop by the Boardwalk Bike Show as it will be one of the premier bike shows of Biketoberfest! Of course we will also be at World Famous The Rat’s Hole Show as well! Hopefully you’ve caught our weekly webshow FullThrottleVision. We have been doing the live webcast for about four months and it is getting more and more popular. We started doing the program live from our studios in Oldsmar, but we have been doing them live "on location" for the past two months! Wing House, Benchwarmers, The Yard, Buffalo Wild Wings and AllieGators have all been wonderful hosts and it is fun getting out seeing the people! If you can’t join us live, make sure you go to www.FullThrottleVision.com and watch a replay or catch us live every Thursday evening from 7:00 till 8:00 o’clock! Have a great month! See you in Daytona or at a FTV webcast! I want to wish Dew a happy birthday this month. Party responsibly and make sure you dress up on Halloween!

October starts the beginning of the great riding season here in Florida and also the beginning of the Holiday season! Halloween and Thanksgiving are right around the corner then you know what that means…..CHRISTMAS IS COMING! It’s never too early to start planning for Christmas and all the great Toy Runs that happen all across the bay area. In NOVEMBER you will start seeing the Full Throttle Fire Truck at Quaker Steak and Lube every Wednesday. We are going to try and “FILL THE FIRETRUCK” for the kids at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for our Annual Toy Run from Tampa Harley-Davidson to St. Joseph’s. This will be in conjunction with the Fire & Iron M/C and the Diva Angels and a couple other groups we have talked with. I would like to try and fill the truck so the kids will have toys and games all year! If you would like to help on this great event please feel free to contact me at 727-919-1743 is my cell or e-mail me at tonyc@floridafullthrottle. com October always means COTEE RIVER BIKE FEST in my world! Cotee River Bike fest is a great event where most of the streets are shut down and there are vendors all over the palce! Greg Billings and numerous other bands will be rockin’ the stage and of course Full Throttle is doing the bike shows like we have done the past few years. Saturday October 8th is an ALL HARLEY BIKE SHOW and then on Sunday October 9th will be a RIDE IN BIKE SHOW. The All Harley Show Also has $500 in Harley cards to the winners sponsored by Gulf Coast Harley-Davidson! Silvana, Gary Bang and the crew always step up for this great event! BIKETOBERFEST is the 13th – 16th of October and you know we will be there the whole time like in years past. We will have our normal 10X10 booths at JP Cycles and Ironhorse Saloon handing out magazines and information. We will also be set up at the Boardwalk Bike Show on Friday Oct. 14th and at the Rats Hole Show the next day at the Daytona Lagoon on Saturday October 15th. There will be an after party at our host hotel THE GRAND SEAS after the Boardwalk Bike Show from 8pm till 12midnight on Friday night. We have a whole is of events happening at this years Biketoberfest in our magazine on page 84. One cool think I saw was Blue Oyster Cult is playing at Destination Daytona on Friday night! Should be a lot of fun! See you in Daytona! Have you seen Full ThrottleVision lately? A lot of people are starting to tune in to our LIVE WEBSHOW every Thursday night from 7pm-8pm. We have been going to different places and doing the show live and the turn out has been awesome! If you would like us to come out and do our LIVE show from your location we are asking for $400 and food for the TV crew. We are also selling :30 second commercials for only $200 and :60 second commercials for only $400! That is shot and edited, we will also run them on the show for 1 month (4 weeks) and upload them to youtube for you so you can use it on your website, facebook, twitter or whatever you want! Full ThrottleVision is a lot of fun and has a great following! Check it out every Thursday night on our website from 7pm-8pm at www.fullthrottlevision.com

Classic Bike Ramblings THE REAL DEAL Facebook is an amazing forum along with blogs, tweets and blasts. Lets alot of people try and tell us or show us how cool they are, show us they are the "Real Deal". But my friends I've not seen many in my opinion. In fact the true "Real Deals" are not on Facebook, no month long lead ups of what they are going to do. "Real Deals" toil away doing what they love, what impassions them without much fanfare or back slapping no "look at me" on facebook. Nope "Real Deals" do it the best, they don't have time for the notoriety. Let's take bike builders for our first look. All the stuff on TV, on cable, O.C.C. and the stuff on Discovery Channel all smoke and mirrors and self back slapping. Mostly guys choppin up lil Japanese bikes or people pushin artwork bikes around to show them off most barely rideable. Heard of one builder making a bike around an engine that doesn't fire. No my friends the "Real Deals" are the guys and gals building bikes in their garages or kitchens, tinkering with the engine first, pistons and valves. Engineering on napkins and notebooks testing and refining. No water plasma cutters, no they don't have high tech, no big budgets. Nope they are not building to sell or as a show queen. They are building to ride, built for function first not a lot of glitz or inlaid seats. Nope form follows function and if it functions well and your garage engineering is on I assure you my friends it will be cool and not laughed at like so many. So here's to the Mitch Greens, the Jakes and Skips and all the obscure garage builders out there. You guys are the "Real Deals" but there's always the amazing "Real Deal" and in bike building this guy is it. I give you. Mr. Erik F. Buell raised on a farm in Gibsonia, Penn. who learned to work on and keep machinery running at a very young age. A farm of all places makes you a true "jack of all trades" and my friends teaches you one thing, keep it running or useable with or without the "right parts". In his teen years he found motorcycles his first "ride" would be an Italian made Parilla with 90cc of "wow". Eriks second bike though would be quite different, it would be a basket case 1957 Harley Panhead , red metal flake paint with two piece ape hanger handle bars which had an annoying habit of coming loose at the wrong times. Erik said " I shoved wads of steel wool into the mufflers to quiet them down for the cops, but when I was really hauling, it would shoot these glowing balls of flame out the back, man that's cool stuff when you're a kid ". While in high school he would race Motocross but soon became very interested in road racing in his twenties. As a part time road racer he would ride a Ducati in the AMA superbike

class and an aging (even at that time) Yamaha TZ 750 two stroke in Formula One Class. Part time motorcycle racer on the weekend, part time motorcycle Mr 500 At Central Station mechanic by day and an engineering student by night at the University of Pittsburgh, Erik would receive his degree in engineering in 1979. He would fly to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Harley Davidson looking for a job, and as he himself put it "I had to literally beat my way in the door". At Harley he would be involved in concept motorcycles, the Porsche designed V four NOVA project, and was the spearhead for rubber mounting the engines of the FXR cruiser and trying to refine the handling and braking of their entire aging line up. While he worked for Harley in the early 1980's he was loyal and stopped his passion of road racing as he did not feel it was right to race a Japanese or Italian motorcycle while employed at Harley Davidson and he felt they had nothing that could compete at those levels or classes. The "Real Deal". But he did miss racing and building race bikes so when he heard of a small engine maker in Great Briton called Barton, well in 1981 my friends he would buy one of their racing bikes.A water cooled, four cylinder two stroke, but the bike was "excuse the pun" a train wreck poorly built and cheap materials. The bike and motor were almost unuseable. Slowly using his engineering background he would reengineer the motor and increase the horse power, fix its unreliability and make it the engine he wanted to race. The frame and chassis on the other hand was a dead end and he would wind up throwing the entire thing away and design his own from the ground up. In the summer of 1982 he would race his bike he called the RW750 the "RW" standing for "Road Warrior". During testing at Talladega it would be clocked at 178 MPH. Barton would shut down and gave Erik Buell the chance to buy the entire stock of engines, spare parts, drawings and all licensing rights, and yes, my pals of history our "Real Deal" would do just this. Buell would ask Harley to come onboard with engineering and financial support, but with the continuing reliability problems with the mostly stock Barton engine they would decline. Buell had decided now to quit Harley, parting on good terms to develop his racing team, his bikes and to build that one "great" bike. He would form the Buell Motor Company producing his RW750 for $15,900 with its closest competitor in the racing field (the Honda) going for $30,000 and the TZ's were no longer

produced and very scarce to find at this point. The RW 750 was heralded as an amazing racing machine by magazines and racers alike, but as they say "timing" is everything. You see, the AMA announced in the spring of 1985 that the Formula One class would be discontinued , leaving the RW 750 no where to race and Buell no one to sell to. But "Real Deals "can't be kept down. Beull would now decide to build his first sportbike for the street. The RR1000 he had purchased a large number of XR1000 racing motors from his former employer Harley Davidson and he knew it was a good solid reliable engine. He then built a stiff very light frame that would use unconventional rubber mounts known as the "Uniplanar" that became a patented engineering trademark of the Buell sportbikes. The wrap around fairing had lower aerodynamic drag than almost any bike bike built then or today. Buell would use the engine as a stressed member of the frame much like Ducati did, he would also use a horizontally mounted suspension located beneath the motor that operated in reverse of the conventional compression- rebound design. There were many firsts in Erik's first american sport bike and between 1987 and 1988, 50 RR1000 bikes were built untill they ran out of engines. Buell then turned to 1203cc Harley Evolution engine and in 1988 the RR1200 was unveiled with a new chassis to accept the evolution engine and 65 were produced for sale.

In 1989 the RS1200 came out, it was a two seat version of the RR1200. 105 of these were built in 89 and 90. The year would be 1991 when Erik would couple the new 5 speed transmission to the 1203 motor and would improve the RS chassis again, stainless brake lines and six piston front brake calipers would be introduced . A single seat version of the improved RS would be built and the press would laud it for its clean lines and good performance through 1993 325 RSS and RS bikes would be produced.

Eric Buell would be responsible for all design, engineering and racing support at Buell. In 2008 the Buell 1125R would come out, the patented frame design would hold the bikes fuel, the inverted 8 piston front brake with its rotor directly attached to the rim and under the bike exhaust system. The bike would not use Harley power, perhaps this is why he and Harley Davidson would soon part ways. The 1125R used a liquid cooled Austrian rotax V twin putting out 146 HP. And although this would not be Buell's "great bike" it was amazing. I reviewed one from Fletchers for Full Throttle. It was a very unique bike and the "Real Deal" himself sent me a letter complimenting me on how special bikes needed special reviewers.I felt special. Production of the 1125R would stop in Oct. of 2009 and Erik Buell and Harley Davidson would part ways again. In Nov. of 2009 he would launch Erik Buell Racing which produced race only versions of his 1125R. But now my good friends Erik has built that great bike the "Real Deal" Superbike the 1190S built only for racing. Erik Buell is a happy man as he stated, "I've taken a lot of blame over the years for Buell motorcycles, often for decisions that had nothing to do with me" he says, "not this time this is exactly what I wanted to build" and all the magazines and reviews concur, "Real Deals" do it for themselves and need no TV shows or tweets. They're too busy making a mark. Erik Buell made his great american sportbike. Well my readers this is all subjective and just like the local bike builders who toil away in their garages, no flash, no hype, not looking for fame or fortune, although they would not run away from it. But its a passion. The music business is like that too. Some do it for the lifestyle or only for the money. But so many in the music business are to one dimensional, they don't adapt . Some take the easy road. Some bands I see locally are the same as they were 20 years ago, many national bands don't last 2 years. Many won't reinvent themselves, many singers don't adapt. A lot of bands have a lot of hype, great graphics departments and agents, but don't have the passion and dedication and desire to be the "Real Deal". But there's one local band I have followed, with that talent, that passion a band that if a gig cancels they go rehearse, yes they all have busy "other" lives but the core group of them are always trying new venues, new songs and new ideas.

In the 1990's his operation would become the Buell Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson looking to gain market share and look to a younger buyer would take on 51% of the company. They would buy complete control of the company in 2003 and Buell Motorcycles would now be bought and serviced at Harley Davidson Dealerships.

It's a band not too many know called "Comfort Zone" they should be called "Rehearsal Zone" but thats what it takes

to make a band work well. Nope not a flashy name but Cherie, Brad and Jonathan often play at many charity events, play as a trio, a duo or at Gators and Dukes with their 8 piece band they adapt, just to play. Cheries truly amazing , a family, kids, but runs Karaoke 5 nights a week many times playing in the trio only to run back and finish Karaoke, not just for the money, but for the "music" its her passion. Jonathan just released a tribute CD to my idol Frank Sinatra called "before my time" and Brad's always rehearsing to get the sound right and working on the next gig. Often many will take less or no pay just to play but with the following they are getting that will soon change. If you see them out you will know the time and effort thats in their music. You will know they're the local "Real Deal". No big record deals (yet), no corporate backing, just passion, hardwork and a line up that stays together, on a like mindset. And my fellow music lovers the next band my, national "Real Deal" well they have toiled away, reinvented themselves and like my pals at Comfort Zone they show what keeping the right people around can do especially for harmonies. This band is huge to the "right" people and big to others. They didn't sweep the world like the Rolling Stones or Beatles, no flashy stage shows, no "gorgeous" members. But they never sold out their dreams and have pulled off so many different sounds. Yes, I think this next group is truly the "Real Deal" Well, my 86 loyal readers a band that has sold over 40 million albums, has retained its founding members for 42 years and most of its core members for 30 years and reinvented itself and music styles over and over well they surely must be the "Real Deal". Yes my rock and roll pals I'm talking about the Doobie Brothers. In 1969 a power trio had formed in San Jose, Calif., their name was "Pud". The line up would be Jim Hartman, drummer, Tom Johnston, singer, song writer and guitarist and bassist Greg Murphy. They would also be experimenting with horn sections which they would become known for as they grew. The year would be 1970 that they would team up with singer, songwriter and guitarist Patrick Simmons who had an acoustic trio named "Scratch"

along with a bassist Tiran Porter who would become a "Doobie" in 1972. Simmons fingerstyle play was a great compliment to Johnston's R&B licks and lead playing. With this lineup in place and Patrick and Tom really connecting as a team, they decided they would need a name that would improve on "Pud" or "Scratch" and in an interview they said that due to their "fondness" for "Doobies" at the time and a feeling of being "brothers", well "Doobie Brothers" seem to be a perfect choice and reflected the mindset and feeling of the band, little did they know it would be a 42 year journey that would make them "The Real Deal" not a musical footnote. The Doobies would help define what would become known as the "California" sound of the 1970's, famous for its multiple guitars, tight three part vocal harmonies and a blending of folk, rock and rythym and blues into a distinctive sound that appealed to so many music fans. the Eagles, CSNY, 3 dog night to name a few who were also part of this amazing emerging scene. The "Doobies" would perfect this style, playing live all over Northern Calif. but they would become a huge hit of a big California motorcycle club the "Hells Angels" and had a steady gig at one of the bikers favorite bars, the Chateau Liberte in the Santa Cruz mountains. The bands image reflected who were their biggest fans and followers the leather jacket motorcycle crowd. But their amazingly tight three part harmonies, rock driven lead guitars and amazing power drumming but they would not go unnoticed for long my friends, they would get a contract at Warner Brothers Records. Their first album self titled "The Doobie Brothers" amazingly would not reflect this sound that made them such a hit at live shows. This album would have acoustic guitars and a big country influence. But it would only take untill the next year when the band would release "Toulouse Street" which my rock n rollers would contain the epic hits "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus is Just Allright", they would put together a show and set lists that would rivet their live audiences, with legendary manager Bruce Cohn now onboard, bassist Tiran Porter and then Michael Hossack would join up, and with the latters addition the Doobies famous two drummer line up would blossom. The addition of Porters funkier bass line and his deeper baritone vocals with Johnston and Simmons well rehearsed harmonies, well it resulted in the trademark three part vocals that the Beach Boys said were "One of the best in music". This would be the Doobie Brothers sound , at least their "PM" sound pre Michael McDonald that is. This amazing sound a blend of R&B, blues, country, blue grass, hard rock and funk and harmonies that were truly equal to the "headliners" of the times like Chicago, the Beach Boys, the Eagles and CSNY would start to soar. Only a year later (1973) Johnston's brilliance would shine once again with "Long Train Running" and " China Grove" and Patrick Simmons rising star would show bright on "South City Midnight Lady". Keith Knudsen and

Michael Hossack would be in and out of the lead drummer line up for the next 35 years. The band now famous for just breaking songs into 15 minute all out jam sessions was gaining momentum and gaining a huge fan base, no easy task with the bands that they were looking for audience share with, but they had a special sound and they were having a blast. 1974 would bring a song, their very first number one hit, and I'm telling you to this day if a great classics or southern rock cover band doesn't play this epic tune, well my friends they are not on my "A" list. The hit was penned by Patrick Simmons and hit number one on Mar. 15th. 1975, released as the "B" side to another song thats also one of my favorites "Another Park, Another Sunday" from the album " What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" ( the album would also go multi platinum and hit #4 on the charts) the song we are talking about of course is "Black Water". Their next album "Stampede" (1975) would diversify the bands sound even more using country, folk and funk to round out their original sound. The album also featuring Maria Muldar, Ry Cooder and Curtiss Mayfield would reach #4 on the charts and be certified gold. This would be the last album before Micheal McDonald would take over from an ailing Tom Johnston, but it would yield the hit "Take Me In Your Arms (and rock me)". The start of the tour for "Stampede" would see Johnston being hospitalized for an ulcer, the life on the road had caught up to him, Jeff Baxter of Steely Dan had been playing with the Doobie Brothers the past two years and recommended another Steely Dan member singer, song writer and keyboardist , Michael McDonald. The "Doobies" under contract to release an album in 1976 would produce "Takin it to the Streets" gone was the electric based multi guitar sound and would become as may be expected with the new addition a more Steely Dan soul/soft rock sound, but most of all McDonalds voice would become "their" sound. "It Keeps You Running" and Taking it to the Streets" would rocket up the charts. Later in 1976 the "Best Of The Doobies" would be released and in 1996 it would go "Diamond" signifying 10 million sales, our brothers are the "Real Deal" now. 1977 would bring "Livin on the Fault Line", "Echos of Love" and "You Belong to Me" (co-writen by Carly Simon). Although Tom Johnston's role was small in "Streets and Fault Line" he was included but would be physically side lined again and he would leave the band he co-founded. After a decade on the road 7 full albums behind them and the band on a different sound and journey from their origins as a biker bar, rock and R & B group, well my friends their careers would soar when 1978's "Minute by Minute"

came out and it would spend 5 entire weeks at the top of the charts and be played on multiple radio formats for the next two years. "What a Fool Believes" would become the bands second number one hit "Depending on You" and Simmons "Steamer Lane Breakdown" would be other memorable tunes from his epic album. Simmons foot print would be more noticeable, and Tom Johnston and Nicolette Larson would contribute vocals on his album also. But the ground breaking "Minute by Minute" would also mark the beginning of the end of the band. Creative conflict, the long touring schedule, the many diverse styles represented by each player. You see big multi piece , talent loaded bands are like a family with so many egos, ideas and dreams and are almost impossible to keep together long, but amazing when they all have one shared vision, one cohesive thought. And the "Doobies" would start to come undone by all of these factors and with their addition of Michael McDonald, many in and out of the music industry would think of the "Doobies" as just being McDonald's backing band, but in light of Johnston's illness I just think it was another direction for the multi purpose multi talented band to take, and I think a credit to them being the "Real Deal". With this album soaring on the charts part of the line up would push ahead, the year was 1979 and multi talented John McFee would join the line up, they would headline with CSN, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Jackson Brown, Bruce Springsteen and more at New York City's, No Nukes Benefit with 200,000 plus folks in attendance. 1980's album "One Step Closer" (their 9th) would yield a top 10, "Real Love" and they would tour through 1980-1981. But things had been coming apart for awhile and now even Pat Simmons who had been there every hour to this point could see the writing on the wall, Michael McDonald ready to go solo and a sound that went from rock and R & B to one as Simmons and McDonald both put it "couldn't have gotten further away from the Doobies sound if they had tried to". So they decided to put together a 1982 farewell tour. All members were present in what all thought would be their last shows ever, the album "Farewell Tour" would be released in 1983. The band would part ways with many doing solo shows, albums and many still doing projects together. But it would be a 1987 and a concert to benefit Veterans causes would bring the Doobies back on stage and together once more, and that one concert would grow into a 12 city tour and my friends what a show, four lead guitarists, four drummers, fiddlers and steel pedals. The tour would end with the "Peace Concert" in Moscow, USSR. They would then reform, more as the "old sound" Doobies, (before McDonald) and the top ten single "The Doctor" would sound much like the biker rock n roll Doobies of before. This album "Cycles" would prove a strong, successful statement that they were indeed "back" and better than ever. The Doobies did some tinkering and had some ups and downs

Full Throttle 34

for a few years, but have been touring continusouly since 1993, they reconnected with Michael McDonald several times. In 1996 they released a double album "Rockin Down The Highway". Four former members of the "Doobies" long lineup have passed away and Johnston had a vocal scare in 2007.Their 2010 tour they were paired with Chicago and on Sept. 28th 2010 the Doobies released their new album "World Gone Crazy" . The New York Post suggested that this album should be "album of the year" saying "now there back on track with a smokin mix of road house boogies, classic rock and country". I recently hung out backstage with Pat, Tom and John and they are still as genuine and softspoken as ever with John McFee's wife snapping pictures of us.These guys have been and still are the "Real Deal". Catch them Sun. Nov. 13th in Orlando, I will. Bike builders and bands well what else is great when you find the "Real Deal"? How about bars, plenty in the Keys, some in New Orleans, but there's one little bar locally in Treasure Island and I'm not talking about the part restaurant and gift shop kinda bar, but a good old smoke filled bar that bikers, businessmen, regular folks and tourists can all mix and get along at, a truly cool and eclectic place yes its the "Real Deal". Its name is Central Station, it has Karaoke five nights a week by the very hot and extreremely talented Cherie Okie (from Comfort Zone) whos been in the "KJ" biz for 16 years, with thousands of songs at her fingertips she my friends can make anyone sound like the "Real Deal" shes the "Real Deal" in karaoke. Sunday and Monday its open Jam Night with an eclectic mix of talent (no I'm not getting paid by the bar, or bands or Erik Buell...lol) I've been going there since it was the old "Nick's Seabreeze". Look for the way sexy Lori behind the bar at night, you won't miss her guys ! Josh (who also sings and performs amazing "bar magic"), Patty and Rebecca and LeeAnn are there also, and all pour a "Real Deal" drink. Check your status at the door everyones equal here, it's a bar with a history, full of people who have made history, some only in their own minds or maybe they are just running from history. I don't smoke or sing (yet!) but as Toby Kieth said so well "I love this bar". Go in there on a Friday Night and tell Cherie Okie Mr. 500 sent ya, then duck! It's the "Real Deal" my bar hoppin friends. But the true "Real Deal" bar I came to love over twenty years ago, one that I go to everytime I'm in Daytona (with or without a bike) well I am speaking about a bar we have all been to . If you get over to Daytona and this is the World Famous Iron Horse Saloon .The Iron Horse moved to its present location in 1987 from its old spot on Main Street in Daytona Beach. The owner Bill Stevens chose

to move the historic bar rather than get caught up in the redevelopment craze and lose the bars atmosphere that made it the "Real Deal" there. And as we have all found out the Main Street renovations did little to help the ciity. Opening on US 1 in what is really Ormond Beach in 1987, the Iron Horse had room to grow. What other bar can you ride into what looks like an old west fort, sit on your bike and have a drink while watching David Allen Coe play? I wll tell you no other my friends. This bar is the "Real Deal". Although thought of as a biker bar, it is truly a bar "of the people" and it really does have a "rougher than it is" image . I have been going there (on US 1) for over 20 years and not seen any issues, check your status at the gate. Great bands, good looking bartenders and a great jukebox and when bike week is going off its one of my very first stops. But if you're doing the boardwalk bike show don't park your Iron Horse too close to the mud wrestling pit ! This bar is such the "Real Deal" my pals that the Commander of the Department of Forestry that responded to the massive 18,000 acre fire last March saw the magnatude of the blaze and thought it might interfere with the up coming bike week and he was looking forward to a stop at the Iron Horse to be part of the action, so it was known worldwide as the "Iron Horse Blaze". Ya gotta be the "Real Deal" to have a fire named after you. So my interested readers, there's a lot of posers and wannabees out there but there's also some talented people in the bike business, the music business and some little bars and big ones where everybody gets along. Go ride a Buell, see one man's unwavering desire to build a bike, build one in your garage, don't Hollywood it, tweet it or hype it, do it because you want to and ride it. Go see Comfort Zone they are on the web (Comfortzoneband.com) and see talent without hype or flash see what passion for music looks like. And if the Doobie Brothers are near ya do not miss this show these guys are amazing. I have met Patrick, Tom and John and they are the "Real Deal" no doubt. And ride your bike down to Central and see "Cherie Okie" go sing a song, have a drink, make a few new friends, you will there I know it, I have. And it's also Biketoberfest so go to the Iron Horse Saloon and see David Allen Coe sing, he's the "Real Deal" too. Go see the guys ride the "Wall of Death" sit on your bike in the middle of one cool bar and have a drink, and as you sit there just remember a lot about being the "Real Deal" is to do it "because it makes you feel good" Hey, Janis Joplin there's a "Real Deal" . Robert "Orlando State of Mind" De Moss

Lets start this right. If you look anything like the girl in this article you can call me today, all others can call tomorrow. Maybe you will see her at Spooks and Scoots this month. It is the second weekend of October (7 8 9), come early and get a good camping spot. This is not a free event that makes money. This event exists for the betterment of bikers through ABATE. They do a lot of good – the signs that you see that say Watch out for Bikers and they also send lobbyists to Tallahassee. They do all sorts of good things for the biker community. If you are not a member, you should consider joining. If you have a computer, go on the internet and check it out, www.abate.com. You can go to the Warlocks event inbetween Spooks and Scoots. They are having a third anniversary party at the Porpoise Club in Pinellas County.

Sometimes the fastest way to get there is to stop for the night.

Admission is free unless you want to eat it is a $5 cover. October 8th is the event day, 4PM till closing. If we all try to buy American made products, that will create jobs. So lets all hang in there boys and girls. See you soon Elvira...

Florida: the Best Beaches

AAA Downgrade Wow ... I don’t feel so bad that my credit rating is down. Hell, even the USA was downgraded from an AAA rating by Standard & Poors. This is the first time since 1917 that the United States has not had a AAA rating as they were downgraded to a AA+ ranking. I guess when you owe $14.3-TRILLION in outstanding debt, that kind of stuff can happen!

Nicki Minaj pulls a Janet Singer Nicki Minaj did her impression of Janet Jackson when she had a wardrobe malfunction of her own while appearing on Good Morning America. She was wearing a loose-fitting halter top and one of her breasts popped out! Despite the five-second delay, the slips were seen on east-coast telecasts. Too bad all you people in California, they were edited out for your feed!

Orlando*Calling! Look for one hell of a concert coming to Orlando November 1213. The “Orlando Calling” event will be held at the Citrus Bowl and feature: The Killers, Kid Rock, The Pixies, Blake Shelton, O.A.R., The Doobie Brothers, Dwight Yoakam, Buddy Guy, Chris Isaak, Los Lonely Boys, Blues Traveler and Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band (to name a few)!

New Pepsi Social Vending Pepsi is debuting new vending machines that let you record a video and send drink gifts to friends. You can purchase a drink at a machine and record a short video message that will be sent along with a personalized text message to your friend! That friend will receive your message on their smart phone and get a code that can be entered into the vending machine for a free drink! Damn, I can’t wait for beer vending machines!

The top ten beaches in The United States include six right here in Florida! Trip Advisor asked their 20-million members where the best beaches were and here is the list: 1) Myrtle Beach, SC, 2) Cape May, NJ, 3) Panama City, FL, 4) Miami Beach, FL, 5) Sanibel Island, FL, 6) Clearwater Beach, FL, 7) Honolulu, HA, 8) Captiva Island, FL, 9) Poipu, HA, and 10) Siesta Key, FL. It’s nice seeing half of the best beaches in the country right here in the Sunshine State!

DNKN Offers Stock Soon you will be able to own stock in Dunkin’ Donuts as the corporation will offer 22.2-million shares (which are expected to be priced between $16 to $18 dollars). The company plans to trade on the Nasdaq market under the “DNKN” ticker symbol. The release date for the IPO has not yet been disclosed.

Quiznos takes over! If you go to your local Hess Station for gasoline, beer or cigarettes you will be seeing more and more Quizno stores popping up. The second largest sub-sandwich chain inked a deal to put 53 sub shops in Florida (40 in the Tampa Bay area). Quiznos paid $206-million for the deal and will also offer breakfast items.

bluetooth: Good for the Brain Here’s a story that kinda sucks .... The American Medical Association did a report that says using a cellphone for over an hour a day could alter brain activity. They say that an increase in glucose metabolism occurs and radiation is impossible to stop. The study says that pressing a cell phone hard and close to your ear is not a smart thing to do. The study adds that every millimeter counts so try not to hold the phone next to your ear as the power and intensity of radiation diminishes dramatically with even the slightest of distance. They recommend using a speaker or wireless bluetooth set up if possible.

This bike began as a challenge to myself to design and engineer as many unique parts as I could on this bike. I wanted to create a design that looked like it had either come from the future or from some other place entirely. I knew that this meant that I would have to fabricate almost every component myself to have that level of unique design, but I felt confident that I could muster the necessary effort to make it happen. I started with a one-off frame build for me by Pro-Tube Frameworks with 45 degrees of rake, -2 in the dual downtubes, 5 inches of stretch in the front and 4 more inches of stretch in the rear. The oil bag is incorporated into the chin fairing(s) and holds almost 6 quarts of oil. The sheet metal work was all done in-house as that is my favorite part of fabrication. The front end design was probably the biggest challenge both from a design and functionality standpoint. The fork legs are chrome-moly tubing and boxed in with 16 gauge steel. The front swingarms are solid billet and were CAD designed by me. The steel fork tips, pegs, grips, axle block covers, exhaust system and many of the other unique parts on this bike are also proprietary designs. I spent a great deal of time teaching myself Solidworks in order to create these elements myself and not have to rely on someone else to interpret my ideas. The wheels are one-off 7 piece designs created by Pickard USA that use the design of the tank as the spokes and the shape of the rear fender as the elements in-between the spokes. I used a Baker 6 speed transmission that was designed for Big Dog as well as a modified Baker DSSC open primary drive. I loved the narrow design and by moving the starter back and down it kept the space under the seat open and clean. The engine started out as an Ultima El Bruto 120 CI which has become my powerplant of choice. I then re-designed the heads and cylinders to have a more modern and unique design and to add to the mystique of the bike. The Ness pushrod covers and lifter blocks complemented their design nicely. After the bike was completed and assembled I decided that, as a result of the rear stretch in the frame, my chain was very long (130 links) and not very attractive. I then got on the computer and designed the billet covers for each link and thus turned a negative into another point of interest on the bike. My speedometer is a Garmin GPS which also plays a slideshow of the build when on display. The bike was unveiled at the Full Throttle Bike Builder’s Invitational in Clearwater and took first place on it’s first time out! I love watching the reactions of people to this build as they explore all of the intricacies of the fabrication. I also love their reaction when I explain that this and all of my bikes were built in a 2-car garage behind my home. No fancy shop with thousand of dollars worth of machinery. I recently disassembled the bike completely in order to change the paint job to what I had envisioned from the beginning. It made me crazy to look at the previous paint job as I felt it compromised all of the work I had done. Now she is truly finished and I am proud of every square inch! By Steve Galvin

Memento Mori Remember Thy Death By Night Train

“Memento mori” is a Latin phrase meaning “Be mindful of death” and may be translated as “Remember that you are mortal,” “Remember you will die,” “Remember that you must die,” or “Remember your death”. It names a genre of artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose, which is to remind people of their own mortality. Having said that and on the eve of Halloween (which some rightfully like to call “Reformation Day”), I off er you a very small bird’s view of the origins of the use of skull symbolism inside and outside of the biker world. The wide spread use and imagery of skulls is deeply intriguing. It is vastly predominant in the Harley Davidson brand, thorough the biker world, the fashion industry and permeates our communities in all shapes forms and personifi cations. To many, the skull simply and rightfully reminds them of death. To others, it symbolizes rebellion, anarchy and evil. To some, it is just an insignifi cant fashion item. I asked Bill Davidson, VP of Harley Davidson Museum what the imagery and symbolism of the “skull” meant at least from the Harley Davidson standpoint. Bill had his Marketing and Archives teams work in tandem to provide some answers on this. While they looked things up I did some digging of my own of course. This made me feel like I was travelling in time, playing with holy fi re and waking some of the dead. This is where “Memento mori” comes in. According to Prof. Mimi Whalen, an Art Historian at Ryerson University, during the “Upper Paleolithic Period” (a fancy expression meaning 5000 to 6000 years before Christ) people worshipped many gods. Part of this worship was to keep ‘part’ of your ancestor in a sacred place where you and your family could go for worship. The ‘part’ you ‘kept’ in many instances was

the skull with the other major bones arranged around it. The ‘idea’ was that while your ancestor had gone up to the heavens to be with the god(s), their bones were the ‘part’ that they recognized from way up there. A ‘part’ of the soul of your ancestor was on earth, hanging around those bones and was called to the bones when you prayed to them for help and guidance. Thus most imagery associated with bones in the ancient world could be tied to the worship of ancestors and the hope of reuniting with them in the afterlife (in heaven). After the Paleolithic era, you have the emergence of civilization and the domestication of plants and animals,

Life expectancy was much lower than it is today and thus people accepted ‘death’ as a ‘fact of everyday life’. Images with skulls on them can be related now to more than just worship of an ancestor – they are now “Memento mori” (a reminder of death). The images of skulls go back as far as the last 500 years in the western culture. It is actually Christian in theme and comes from the idea that there are many pleasurable things in life which can be described as ‘vanities’. So when you painted an image which showed these ‘good things’ which are ‘vanities’ you needed to include a reminder of the transience of life. You needed to be reminded that these things you were enjoying here and now should not make you forget God. “Vanitas” by Maria Van Oosterwyck 1668 Again according to Prof. Mimi Whalen, the female Dutch painter (Maria Van Oosterwyck) who created this work in 1668 (the 17th century) did this on spec. Look carefully at the objects in the painting – the fl owers smell sweet and look beautiful but they will rot and decay. The tulips, in particular, were the subjects of a ‘stock market’ craze for rare tulip bulbs in 17th century Holland which had led to some people going changes in climate, and an explosion bankrupt. The corncob seems like nothin human population. Groups are living to us but it was a ‘new luxury food’ ing together in ‘towns’ and ‘cities’ etc. introduced to Holland in the 17th cenCommunal worship of gods with the tury from the ‘New World’ (aka Central ‘infrastructure’ of churches, temples, America). The wine, the musical instrupriests, and organized religion develment, the money pouch, all allude to ops. wealth and leisure. Yet written on one Many have a short life expectancy – of the books is ‘self-struggle’ and ‘reckyou have poor sanitation if you are oning’. There is an hourglass reminding living with hundreds or thousands of you of the passage of time and a globe people in a city with no sewers! You to remind you of the heavens. And have no scientifi c knowledge of how then there is the skull hovering quietly to prevent disease or cure common to remind you of your mortality. Don’t conditions and there is an explosion fall off the path. in ‘preventable’ deaths from even the Among others there was Pieter Bruegel ‘simplest’ causes such as the common the Elder from 1562 Belgium. Pieter cold, fl u, tuberculosis, polio, malaria, Bruegel was a Protestant living in a bone fractures, tooth decay and so on. country that was ‘supposed to be’

Full Throttle 73 Catholic because it was run by Spain. Bruegel, like many of his friends, had

joined a different religious denomination (the Baptist church comes from this period and part of the world) and he knew that a civil war was brewing. The Spanish wanted to bring the Inquisition to Belgium to force people to return to the Catholic faith. So Bruegel uses the imagery of skeletons – associated already with death and ‘doing the right thing’ to show that this skeleton army with their crosses on their shields could also be working for the ‘wrong side’ – the side of the Inquisition. The painting “The Triumph of Death” is also showing how no one is exempt from death – whether you are King Solomon on the far lower left corner of the painting, or a group of decadent game players (the lower right of the painting). Everyone will suffer when the legions of death arrive. Skeletons as ‘employees of Satan’ are the other end of the same conversation – they show you that if you are bad, you will end up like them: dead, but working in Hell. Thus skeletons and skulls (like the lone skull in the center bottom of the painting) can be linked with the effects of making the wrong decisions in life and thus serving the wrong master in the end. The usage of skeletons by Bruegel can also be related to the “Totentanz” (Dance of Death which is still wildly popular even today!). “The Triumph of Death” by Pieter Bruegel

“Totentaz” (Dance of Death) In summary, the “Dance of Death” always pretty much “personifies” death. Combined with the signification of “Memento mori” we can all see that skull imagery has stayed with all of us regardless of what lies behind the motives to use the imagery. Be it for mere fashion or for spiritual value, should we perhaps reflect about the emblems we embrace? When the Harley Davidson team got back to me it was stated that no conclusive findings came-up. Theories had it that the imagery of skulls was brought back by WWII veterans along with other symbols including crossbones. Personally, what attracts Bill

Davidson to the image of the skull is its’ “mystique”. Harley Davidson I was told looks at it as an “art form”. The intriguing skull image has been in our communities for a very long time. It was perceived negatively years ago but now it is of much broader significance and appeal. “I don’t look at it as a symbol of death. It is rebellious yes but I just like how it looks artistically” – Bill Davidson. Bill sits back in his chair, smiles and proceeds to show me the huge Harley skull belt buckle on his waist. We both smiled. I believe from Harley Davidson’s standpoint, the integration of the skull into the brand was that of a marketing business decision probably to sympathize with WWII heroes and

honor them. I do not believe Harley Davidson is intentionally trying to remind people they will die or to encourage evil one single bit. So when all is said and done what are we to make of this? It seems through the ages the skull has been a symbol of the forces of another realm. Bill Davidson once told me “Life is defined and so we should strive to live it wisely”. I kind of like the skull image. Depending how it is personified, it is fair to say the skull can send a multitude of messages. I like the “Memento mori” message (Remember Thy Death). To me it is like a live landmark constantly reminding me as a mere mortal I will give account for every word, every thoughts, every action or gesture. I just don’t want to and I can’t afford to forget that. That is why instead of a skull and the potential mixed meaning it can have, I got my own custom patch that says “Remember Thy Death” on my vest! Kind of eccentric perhaps but it has kept me out of trouble so far for many years. Besides, dancing with the dead is not my cup of tea. Lots of us and especially me can use that kind of reminder every once in a while. Keep your skull around your brain and on your shoulders with your eyes wide open on Life! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Civic Leader Changes His Plea to “Guilty” Tavares, FL, September 20, 2011 – While riding back home from Biketoberfest on October 17, 2009, Herbert “Steve” Muller was hit and killed by Lake County civic leader Bruce Duncan. Duncan’s Blood Alcohol was twice the legal limit in addition to the ½ empty bottle of vodka FHP found in his truck. In court today, Duncan did not dispute these facts. After many hearings in this case, on September 19 & 20, 2011 Mr. Duncan changed his plea to Guilty of DUI Manslaughter. This case took on a life of its own when Duncan’s defense team began lining up figures such as Florida State Representative H. Marlene O'Toole (R-Lady Lake), two Circuit Court Judges, President of Lake-Sumter Community College Dr. Charles Mojock, Tavares City Administrator John Drury, as well as fifteen other community leaders to be defense witnesses in Duncan’s hearing. Although there were several hours of testimony from family and friends on both sides, not all the defense witnesses had the opportunity to testify. ABATE of Florida, Inc. State President, James “Doc” Reichenbach II, did testify for the prosecution, asking that the Court not depart from the recommended sentencing guidelines, and how drivers killing motorcyclists are getting away with insignificant fines. Asst. State Attorney Sue Purdy recommended that Circuit Judge Michael Takac impose a 12 ½ year prison sentence and a permanent license suspension. The state sentencing guidelines recommend a sentence of 10 years and a few months, but the defense attorneys have asked the Court to depart from these guidelines and sentence Duncan to only 4 years, the absolute minimum sentence allowed by law. The defense also motioned to suppress the testimony of “Doc” Reichenbach, claiming prejudice and that ABATE is not an affiliate. Judge Takac denied this motion, stating that he allowed numerous testimonies from defense witnesses that could very well be deemed prejudice as well. On September 30, 2011 at 8:30 am Judge Takac will sentence Bruce Duncan at the Fifth Judicial Courthouse, Lake County, on 550 W Main St. Tavares, FL. Members from at least six ABATE of Florida chapters attended the Sept. 19th hearing. Motorcyclists are asked to show support for Steve Muller’s family and let the public know that we won’t stand idly by while we’re getting killed on Florida’s roadways. Contact Lake County Chapter President Casey Staley at 407-469-2455 or president@lake.abateflorida.com for additional information on the September 30, 2011 Sentencing Hearing. ----

ABATE of Florida, Inc. is Florida’s largest Motorcyclists’ Rights Organization, and one of the top four largest nationwide. ABATE of Florida members come from all walks of life and include many elected officials. Our missions are to educate the public about motorcycle awareness and continuing to fight in Tallahassee for the rights of every motorcyclist and the public in general. To aid in these ends, we have an exclusive lobbyist and have founded the Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program, both with the intentions to help make the roads safer for everyone. The clerk said, ‘Why, that’s a thermos..... It keeps hot things hot, And cold things cold.’ ‘Wow, said the blonde, ‘that’s amazing.....I’m going to buy it!’ So she bought the thermos and took it to work the next day. Her boss saw it on her desk. ‘What’s that,’ he asked? ‘Why, that’s a thermos..... It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold,’ she replied.. He reflexively reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back. ‘Oh my, I am so sorry,’ the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. ‘Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.’ They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre followed by drinks. They talked, they laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest. After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a very intimate and wonderful time.
