m Fro Ed... the Hope you’re all having a beautiful summer, no doubt hanging out on the beach or around the pool, living the good life! Hopefully you’re taking advantage of the good weather while it lasts and visitng all the tourist attractions, such as the water parks and theme parks. One of the places I love to go is the butterfly park in Benalmadena, and when the sun is shining the butterflies are far more active than on a cloudy day. Since leaving Spain at the beginning of July my husband and I are now settled in Ojai, California. We’re staying in a delightful little house surrounded by avocado and fruit trees and we have our own garden frequented by all creatures great and small, including multi-coloured butterflies, rabbits, hummingbirds, and lizards. Today we’re going to visit Santa Barbara for the day, a neighbouring town to have a look around and visit the beach, and as LA is only 90 minutes away, we think we’ve found a good spot to live for the time being, surrounded by likeminded people. With only three and a half months to go until the baby is born we’ve been busy meeting midwifes – aiming to have a natural homebirth in a water pool, but of course staying open to anything when it comes to the unpredictability of births. We’ve also been going to lots of shops too, such as Baby’s R Us to stock up on everything we need for when he or she arrives. Somewhat synchronistically, the word Ojai translates as Nest in the language of the Shumash Indians who originally settled here, so we’re confident we’ve found the perfect ‘nest’ for our new baby!

Lowry lout A man has been jailed for 20 weeks for singing 1970s hit 'Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs' day and night. Council tenant Michael Thornton made his neighbours' lives a misery through belting out the tribute to artist LS Lowry by folk group Brian and Michael. The song was at number one for three weeks in 1978. After drinking, the 51-year-old would sing it at the top of his voice along with a selection of Irish rebel songs, reports the Birmingham Mail. Thornton was sentenced at Birmingham Country Court to 20 weeks in prison after breaking an anti-social behaviour injunction - a civil court ASBO - under which he was required to keep the peace. The city council is also seeking his permanent eviction. Lucky leaves An eight-year-old boy from Malpas, Cheshire, is a contender for the title of the luckiest little lad in Britain after discovering a super-rare seven-leaf clover in his garden. Oscar Humphreys and his brother Lucas, 12, had gone to investigate after their dad David Humphreys, 46, said he had spotted four-leaf clovers growing in an area of their garden. After the pair picked out plants with four, five and even six leaves, the younger brother continued to harvest the fertile patch. Lucas said: “After searching for a while, Oscar shouted out ‘seven-leaf clover.’ “At first he wouldn’t even let me touch it – now he’s got it safely tucked away in his bedroom.” Four-leaf clovers are thought to be good-luck charms, so a seven-leaved version could have even greater power. Lucas said neither of the brothers had experienced any ‘major’ luck yet, but Oscar was chosen out of a hat for a ‘Legotastic challenge’. “Only a few could go so I suppose you could call that luck,” he added.

Restaurant FIRMVM The Sentinella recently visited the relatively
new Restaurant FIRMVM on Plaza Damasco in Almuñecar...
Opened towards the end of 2014, Restaurant FIRMVM fast gained the reputation of being one of the finest restaurants on the Costa Tropical, with rave reviews and countless recomendations from very happy diners. We thought we would check it out and see just how good it is. We opted to visit for the special four course lunchtime menu, priced at 30€ per head and including wine. Not the cheapest menu del dia on the Costa Tropical by far and admittedly we were hoping for something a little special for that price, but little did we suspect that it would by far exceed our expectations! Restaurant FIRMVM has options to dine inside or al fresco on their terrace, but with temperatures hitting the mid thirties this lunchtime, there was no option but to take advantage of their air conditioned interior, with its modern and sophisticated feel and possibly the most comfortable seating you will find in any restaurant in the area. With two options for every course we decided to order one of each so that we could sample everything on offer that lunchtime. First up was Marinated Salmon with citrus, garlic mayonnaise with honey and mustard accompanied by tender shoots salad and pickled red onion. Delightful tastes and presentation, but the other option of Cod in Tempura Salad with green asparagus, avocado, cherry tomatoes all drizzled with a chiplote chilli sauce was the tastiest cod I have had the pleasure to eat here on the Costa Tropical. Next dish was either seasonal mushrooms, with low temperature egg, fried foie and slivers of Iberian streaky bacon or braised octapus tentacle with lime juice and an emulsion of Greek yoghurt accompanied with ‘wrinkled’ new potatoes. Both were magnificent creations, immaculately presented, whilst the flavours complimented each other perfectly. Next were main courses of fresh fish from Motril Fish Market or ‘Retinto’ steak served with
baby new potatoes, seasonable vegetables, sesame oil and Japanese barbecue. As expected, both were absolutely delicious, nice sized portions and perfectly presented. Followed by two incredible desserts of ‘The Banana’ or ‘Alhambra Memory’ which includes the legendary FIRMVM mint ice cream - a must try, trust me! Once again the chef had created two masterpieces that would be at home in any of the worlds top restaurants. All in all, Restaurant FIRMVM is the type of restaurant that you must try at least once when here on the Costa Tropical. Serving some of the finest and creative cuisine in a very nicely appointed restaurant with highly professional yet personable service and at prices that although above average are extremely fair for the quality that is offered. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction, and improve whole-body health and performance. CST is an alternative medicine therapy used by osteopaths, massage therapists, naturopaths and chiropractors. Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. Cranial Osteopathy was originated by physician William Sutherland, DO (1873-1954) in 1898-1900. What conditions does Craniosacral Therapy address? CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it´s effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. Craniosacral therapists use the therapy to treat:
- Migraines and headaches - Chronic neck and back pain - Spinal misalignment - Mental stress and tension-related disorders - Fibromyalgia - Scoliosis - Infant and childhood disorders - ADD/ADHD - Orthopaedic problems - Post-traumatic stress disorders - TMJ Syndrome - Lymph oedema (water retention in legs or arms) - And many other conditions... Cómpeta, pronounced by stressing the Com and not the Peta, is a high mountain village situated in the foothills of Sierra Almijara. The road leading to it is long and winding and as you drive onwards and upwards past lorries hurtling past you at breakneck speed you just know that when you get there this village will have everything you need to sustain you as you are not going to want to keep driving up and down 18 kilometres to the coast every day! It is on the route of sun and wine and has a vast population of some 3,600 people from about 35 different nationalities. A kind of United Nations of the mountains! You can drive all the way up to the central square, la plaza Almijara, where there are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops sitting submissively below the Church of la Asuncion with its unique belfry tower, a reference point on the Cómpeta skyline. It seems to rise right up through the clouds as you stand below to admire it. Walking through the arch to the Paseo de las Tradiciones you find a much needed shady terrace with public toilets and the history of the village shown in a series of ceramic murals. You can´t park your car there but you can drop people off so they don´t have

Other places of interest are the Hadriano Museum in the oldest part of town, which is just a house with a mill inside! The Chapel of San Cayetano which sits behind the museum on San Sebastián street and in turn leads to the quieter end of town, the cemetery! There is also a wine museum that sells different types of local wine, produce and handicrafts as well as serving food and drinks. August 15th is the Noche del Vino, the annual festival where free drinks can be sampled throughout the streets which are alive with Flamenco and other dance and music. In the morning there are demonstrations showing the treading of the grapes followed by lunch of migas and sardines with salad. Traditionally the villagers leave the town on this day to go to their country houses to harvest their grapes, placing them on enormous drying beds, that look like giants graves! and turning them in the harsh sunlight. Once sufficiently baked the grapes are then collected and the stalks snipped off, rendering them ready for consumption. If you listen you can hear the hills are alive with the sound of snipping in late September. The leaving party, as the villagers departed for their finca´s, was made an official fiesta by the local council in 1975. It is worth making a note in your diary as it is one festival you should attend at least once to enjoy the history and tradition of this vast mountain village. The best way to get to Cómpeta is either up from Algarrobo, past Sayalonga and continue on up, or up from Torrox Pueblo. From the A-7 it will take about 30 minutes

Recipe Of The Month Pea, feta & summer herb frittata Serves 4 Use your favourite soft herbs in this thick grilled omelette with peas, cream cheese and courgette- we like dill, mint and parsley ingredients 300g new potatoes (such as Jersey Royals), halved if large 4 eggs and 2 egg whites splash of milk 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp gluten-free wholegrain mustard handful mixed soft herbs, such as dill, mint and parsley, roughly chopped 3 tbsp cream cheese 1 tbsp olive oil 1 courgette, coarsely grated ½ tsp chilli flakes 140g petits pois (defrosted if frozen) 100g feta cheese, crumbled 50g sundried tomatoes, drained and roughly chopped 100g bag salad leaves, to serve Method Put the potatoes in a pan of salted water, bring to the boil, then simmer for 12-15 mins or until tender. Drain, leave to cool, then thinly slice. Whisk the eggs and egg whites with the milk, garlic, mustard and herbs, and season generously. Add the cream cheese and fold through just a little so that some lumps remain. Heat the grill to medium-high. Heat the oil over a medium heat in a 23cm nonstick frying pan. Add the potatoes and fry for about 5 mins, until they start to turn golden. Add the courgette and chilli flakes, and continue to fry for a couple mins more. Stir through the petit pois. Tip the egg mixture into the pan and scatter with the feta and tomatoes. Cook over a gentle heat for 10-12 mins until almost set. Pop the pan under the grill and cook for 3-5 mins until puffed, golden and cooked through. Cut into wedges and serve with a crisp green salad.

The new European Union rules – now known as EU 650/2012 – are applicable to successions to all member states (ECS state) as of August 17 this year. The UK, Eire and Denmark have opted out, citing incompatibility between the differing legal procedures. Expats in Spain have the choice to apply either the law of nationality or the law of habitual residence to their succession. The habitual residency choice leaves many inconsistencies as to whether this is in the country of residence, or the country you were most associated with at time of death. In the latter case, the law of succession of that country will apply. The new regulation will be applicable to all assets in the EU, and will apply in Spain. Drafting a will is one of the most important duties that you will undertake. Do not leave this to chance – as well as the very important new clause, there is also the matter of the translation. European Regulation 650/2012 will be applicable to EU citizens who die on or after 17th August this year. Their succession will be governed by the law applying in the country where the deceased had his/her habitual residence at the time of death, unless they expressly choose their own national law when they make their will. Residents in Spain should be careful to include in their wills their choice of inheritance law (either their own national law or the Spanish law). For example, if you are English and living in Spain, and you die on or after 17/08/2015, your succession will be governed by Spanish Inheritance Law, unless you have opted for your national law. In other words in most cases foreign EU residents will have to draft a new Spanish will. People Who Come And Go People who Come and Go – 9 – Hanneke, ‘guardian’ of rustic style! Advertised last month in The Sentinella, ‘Casa Elefante’ has sold remarkably quickly. Owned
for 15 years by Hanneke, from Holland, this delightful country cottage near Los Romanes obviously has what it takes to attract attention! Style is what this lovely house is all about. Rustic features flow gently and beautifully from room to room, with restored beams on sloping ceilings, original flooring and grey-blue painted woodwork and windows. Smooth, polished, painted concrete proves to be an excellent work surface in both kitchens and bathrooms. The cottage, divided into two independent halves, has a connecting door to make the space super versatile – after seeing the first half, it is a delight to pass through the ‘secret’ door to discover the second!
I asked Hanneke how she managed to make the house so perfect. “I love the blend of Mediterranean and Morrocan styles, with their use of natural materials, organic forms and simple, minimalistic aesthetics and I wanted to recreate my own version of that blend. I used natural pigments for painting and smooth,
rounded surfaces. The gardens and land around, with large rock formations and rolling country views, work so well with this style too! I only had to bring everything together. I hope that the result is an atmosphere of love, respect and harmony with nature within the property.”
Now, the new owners are looking forward to taking over ‘guardianship’ of the house from Hanneke - after all, we own our properties on paper, but owners come and go, and really we are just ‘guardians’ while we live in them. Angler fish got their name from their method of earning a living: long before human anglers ever appeared on the planet, angler fish were skilled fishers
Females attain full sexual maturity only after a male of the species finds her and attaches to her body by biting into her skin; it remains there for life The male anglers then fuse with the female – so much so that gradually, all one can see of the male are two globular growths on the female’s skin: its gonads. From this point on, the male’s life literally depends on its female host, as they even share a circulatory system. When the female is ready to mate, the male provides sperm on the spot so that she might impregnate herself.
They have their own – sometimes glowing – “fishing pole" (esca) which is actually an evolutionary adaptation of the first three bony rays of the dorsal fin, which protrude from between their eyes, very close to the upper jaw The fish wiggles this about to lure in other predatory sea creatures that it will ultimately devour. Poetry Corner House Cleaning Blues by Ellen Bailey I have the house cleaning blues I look around and see so much to do I look at the walls, the windows, and the floors I see heaps of dust layered like boards What I need is a good house cleaning crew But where to get one, I haven't a clue I asked for volunteers, but none would relent Their community spirit, it seems, had been spent I could wish for an occasional hurricane For me, that may not be such a bad thing I could raise the windows and open the doors And be done with these house cleaning chores But hurricanes don't occur where I live So its left up to me to clean this crib I have devised a plan to get the job done Since I can no longer depend on anyone My plan is as simple as it can be One that is not very taxing on me My walking shoes I will lace up tight And from this nightmare I will take flight
Reader Writes Dear Editor I am returning home today after ten days staying at Casa Lester Chimenea Hill Nerja. Sadly my holiday was marred by an incident last night when just after putting out rubbish a man exposed himself at the door to the villa. Thankfully the gate was locked. The police were unable to find our complex so did not attend and we discovered there was no emergency number for the management company. As the police did not contact me to take my details I doubt they will be in touch further. It was a very distressing experience and to find there was no help or assistance is worrying. Particularly as it was late at night, it could have been a lot worse and noone would have known. As I return to the uk this morning I'm raising the issue for your readers, should there have been other similar issues, and for the community to be aware. The man was around 5ft 6" white and tanned. Told primarily from the perspective of the feelings inside 11year-old Riley's mind (brought to life by the voices of Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and more), the plot has many moments of peril/tension, including bridges/islands crumbling, a train tumbling over a precipice, and characters falling into a deep, dark pit.
Some of Riley's fears are also on display, including a giant, scary clown. Parents are likely to get hit hardest by the film's heart-tugging moments, but anyone with empathy will feel for Riley as she experiences life's ups and downs. Ultimately, Inside Out has important messages about needing to feel, and express, all of your emotions whether happy or sad. Although most of the content is appropriate for elementary schoolers and up, younger kids may need a bit more explanation about what's going on, since there are references to abstract thought and the subconscious, and it can be a little confusing when other characters' emotions are shown. Jokes h a ha :) Juan comes up to the Mexican border on his bicycle. He's got two large bags over his shoulders. The guard stops him and says, "What's in the bags?" "Sand," answered Juan. The guard says, "We'll just see about that. Get off the bike." The guard detains Juan overnight and has the sand analyzed, only to discover that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags.
