m Fro Ed... the Torre del Mar really has become the ‘Malaga’ of Andalucia. 14 years ago, when I first visited this part of Spain on holiday, I was shocked that somewhere in Spain, there was little evidence that English people actually lived here — of course I knew some did, as my parents and many others had already moved here, but it certainly was not evident in the town. I remember one morning walking for about 40 minutes trying to find a menu in English for breakfast, as at that time, I could not speak a word of Spanish apart from ‘Hola’ and ‘Adios’! We eventually gave up and went back to my parents’ house for brunch! 14 years on and Torre del Mar is a completely new town — and for the better I believe. More and more different nationalities are looking to reside in this wonderful town where all amenities now cater for English, French, Germans, Scandinavians etc. Not only are the menus now multilingual, but nearly all the workers can speak a basic level of English too. How times have changed. The town of Torre del Mar is heaving throughout the summer months and with events such as the Air Show, the Weekend Beach Festival and the annual Feria swelling the total number of people in the town to more than 500,000, the Mayor certainly has his job cut out to make sure it all runs smoothly. From what I have witnessed, though, all the officials do their jobs extremely well. The restaurants that once were little dingy, smoky bars are now swish and modern with comfy seating, and are nicely-lit where you feel relaxed and able to enjoy a nice glass of wine in comfort and style — yet still with an acceptable amount on ‘la cuenta’ at the end of it! It seems there is a new modern restaurant popping up every week.

I guess the only downside to Torre del Mar is that there now is not enough parking for the thousands who want to come and enjoy a piece of it. I am one of the lucky ones and

Strange News and can just stroll in — I’m there in under 10 minutes. However, not everyone is that lucky and to be fair, who wants to spend an hour or so of their precious evening driving round and round fighting for a parking space? Hopefully, the Mayor will sort this problem out for the years to come. Maybe they will look at how other busy towns in the area are run — such as Torrox Costa. Here, they have recently introduced ‘Blue Parking Bays’, which gives people a maximum of two hours’ free parking and so allows visitors to the town to do a bit of shopping or have a bite to eat. This means there are always parking spaces readily available and people can’t just dump their car in a space for the whole of the summer period! On that cheery note, have a wonderful August and as ever, enjoy the read x

Stork calling A charity has been left with £2,000 phone bill after a stork flew off with a SIM card. Polish environmental group EcoLogic had fitted a white stork, called Kajtka, with a tracker in an attempt to track his migratory habits. They logged Kajtka’s winter migration route through Africa, and were preparing for his spring return, but after travelling over 3,700 miles to the Blue Nile Valley in eastern Sudan, all contact was lost. EcoLogic told the Super Express that somebody mugged the bird of its tracker, and put the SIM card in their own phone before racking up more than 20 hours of calls. Now the charity has been told that they must pay more than 10,000 polish zloty (£2,064), for the usage. Stork-tagging plays an important role in environmentalists’ research and conservation of migratory birds, and data from GPS trackers can be used to help scientists assess birds’ habits, social behaviour and threats.

Window war A video currently going viral on youtube shows the most ‘passive aggressive’ bus fight you’ll ever witness. It involves a man and a woman in an eternal silent battle over whether or not a window should be open. The wordless argument lasts four minutes in which the window is opened, then closed, a number of times. The man begins the window wrestle by opening the sliding pane as the bus begins to move. But the woman sitting in front of him is clearly not happy about the situation and immediately pushes it closed again. This continues with the pair keeping deadpan faces while refusing to acknowledge the other exists. It was filmed in Nizhy Novgorod, western Russia. But the most upsetting part of the whole story? The footage cuts out before we can find out who actually won.
Summer Opening: Lunch & Dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Sunday Lunch only and closed Monday. Tapas, light bites and a la carte always available Please let us know you are coming as it helps planning!

Strange News (Continued) ‘Psychic’ octopus eaten An octopus who correctly predicted World Cup results was sold for food before the tournament ended. Rabiot, a giant pacific octopus, was right in his predictions that Japan would beat Colombia in their opening match, draw with Senegal and lose to Poland. He showcased his talent by being put into a paddling pool with three baskets that had the Japanese flag, their opponent, and one that said ‘draw’. But sadly, despite his 100% track record, Rabiot, was unable to predict his team’s defeat against Belgium because he had been boiled alive and sold at a fish market to become someone’s dinner. Rabiot is not the first animal prophet to capture the hearts and minds of World Cup fans. Another octopus, Paul, called the right outcome of eight matches during the 2010 tournament from his tank at the Oberhausen Sea Life Aquarium in Germany.
Snow joke Iran thinks Israel has been stealing its clouds to cause a drought. An Iranian general has accused Israel of ‘manipulating weather’ to prevent rain over the Islamic republic – aka, stealing the country’s clouds. Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, head of Iran’s Civil Defence Organisation, alleged during a press conference that his country was facing cloud ‘theft.’ Speaking at the conference, the general said: ‘Foreign interference is suspected to have played a role in climate change’. He later insisted the results from an Iranian scientific study ‘confirmed’ the claim. He cited a survey showing that above 2,200 metres, all mountainous areas between Afghanistan and the Mediterranean are covered in snow — except Iran. Iran’s own meteorological service struck a sceptical note, however. ‘Iran has suffered a prolonged drought, and this is a global trend that does not apply only to Iran,’ a spokesman said. ‘On the basis of meteorological knowledge, it is not possible for a country to steal snow or clouds.’

De Cotta Law TAKING A CHILD OVERSEAS Following separation or divorce of residents in Spain, there is significant potential for conflict when one of the parents wishes to take the child to live with them overseas. This matter must be managed with great care in order to avoid committing a criminal offence. If a parent plans to move to live with the children in another country it is very important to know that this requires the agreement and consent of the other parent. This permission must be obtained unequivocally, and ideally in writing, to avoid conflict should the other party change their mind. In cases where it is not possible to obtain the other parent's consent amicably, then the permission of the court is required. A parent needs the permission of the other parent or a Court Order to take a child to live permanently abroad. To maximise the chances of success with the court granting custody and permission to take the child overseas, the case must be professionally prepared. It is important to establish a system for visits, so that the other parent can have access to the child for a length of time that reflects the geographical distance between them. If the dispute is not legally settled in court, then taking the child overseas without consent and a court order, without establishing regular visitation rights for the other parent, can be considered to be the
criminal offence of child abduction or kidnapping. If the child is taken abroad without consent, the other party can commence legal proceedings, requesting the return of the child under the Hague Convention of October 25, 1989 on Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. The parent making the application will be legally aided, so it is important to come to an agreement and to take legal advice before making decisions which affect children. Interesting Facts... Martinique is the largest of the Windward Islands. Other islands in the group include Grenada, St. Lucia and St. vincent and the Grenadines. The original inhabitants of the island were the Native American Arawaks who were later driven out by the Caribs. visited by the explorer Christopher Columbus and briefly occupied by the Spanish, Martinique was settled by the French in 1635. Other colonial powers vied for control of the sugar-producing island and it came under brief periods of English rule in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Martinique became a Department of France in 1946. Before the island was named Martinique by Christopher Columbus on the 15th June 1502, the island was known as Jouanacaëra-Matinino, a name that comes from the Tainos of Hispaniola to mean 'mythical island'. With its rugged scenery and beautiful beaches Martinique is a popular tourist destination.

Costaboattrips & Power Boat Rental Have you ever thought about just getting up and leaving the desk or workplace for a morning or afternoon and instead heading out on a lovely boat trip with the family or friends? Well, this is exactly what I did, and boy, did we have a fantastic time. I had heard that there was a new speed boat moored in Caleta Marina, Costaboattrips, so I promptly arranged a local trip. Our English-speaking, fully insured and registered Captain did the usual briefing and made sure that there were child life jackets on board should we have needed them. The boat really is lovely — a brand new Italian power boat which can travel with speeds of up to 59 kilometres per hour. It’s fully insured for seven people plus the Captain, and there is a free selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on board. You can also bring your own so you don’t run out! Food can be brought on board too, and to be fair, you can pretty much do as you please on board — within reason! There is a fresh water shower available on board and a long range fuel tank. There’s also a canopy that pulls right over the boat if at anytime shade is needed. You can enjoy snorkelling, swimming, sunbathing, diving, fishing, sightseeing, sunset cruises, relaxing — in fact just about anything you desire! You can book your excursion according to your individual needs, whether it be a couple of hours, a half day, full day or even a week is possible. Whatever you choose, Costaboattrips promise it will be fun and packed full of happy memories. Our journey started off at 10.30am and we headed at speed towards Almayate. The kids were having a whale of a time with the boat crashing along on the little waves. I was relaxed at the rear of the boat, getting some well-needed rays on my somewhat pasty body. After a short but fast arrival, we moored up. We had done from Caleta to as far as just past the nudist beach in only 6 minutes and when I asked how fast we had been travelling, I was told it was only half the speed of which the boat is capable. I knew then that another trip was already on the cards as I needed to experience full speed, but with the kids on board and it being my first time, half speed was fast enough on this occasion.
Once moored, we were looking forward to a nice swim but went right off the idea as we saw hundreds of jellyfish in the sea. So we slowly cruised until we found a nice spot with no jellyfish, had a relaxing swim in the water and then settled down to a well-earned glass of cava and a nibble on some juicy grapes. Once relaxed with glass in hand, looking out at sea, we really did spend a most fabulously calm day. There was hardly a ripple in sight. Two bottles of Cava later, we started to head back, when all of a sudden our two-hour boat trip became a four-hour one and a memory for a lifetime. In the distance, a huge dolphin rose completely out of the water — just like you see in the movies. We headed for them and, well, our Captain went here, there and everywhere following the dolphins, making sure we saw their every move. There was a pod of about 20 we think and they were so close, you could hear the amazing noise they make every time they emerge from the water. As for the children — well, they were in their own little world. The eldest, aged 13, commented, “This is the best boat trip ever.” We have been on a few over the years and seen dolphins before, but never been lucky enough to have had a Captain who was happy to follow them around for two hours! Finally, we all decided enough was enough — although we could happily stayed for longer. However it was time to finish our journey back to Caleta and we were there in two minutes. It really was an amazing trip and we can’t wait to book a longer trip next time to Maro and really experience the power of this lovely boat. To book your own unique adventure, see Costaboattrips main advert opposite for all contact details.

Halcyon Retreat - Golf & Spa Resort French properties for sale…but not as you know them WYNDHAM HALCYON RETREAT DEAL SUMMARY Apartments available for sale will range from £13,000 to £735,000 and can be purchased through fractional ownership or traditional full ownership methods. • Guaranteed fixed 8% net returns for 10 years • First years returns paid in advance, from day 1 • Buy back option available 3 years from completion • Fully managed stress free • Full or fractional ownership Personal usage options To many, owning a holiday property in France is a lifelong dream. For others, it is more about generating an income from the rental returns. Marrying the two together however can be very complicated – and that’s where owning a property inside a growing resort in central France can help. Halcyon Retreat Golf & Spa Resort in the Limousin, not far from the regional capital Limoges, is a developing high-end resort that will have over 25 facilities on-site once fully complete. Set in 220-acres of countryside, some of the properties for sale here are mainly off-plan, meaning those buying now benefit from ‘early bird’ pricing whilst still taking advantage of strong rental returns even if their property is not fully finished. By buying here, whether you are looking at purely investment, purely a holiday home or a mix of both, there are hassle-free options available to suit all manner of budgets. Within the grounds a range of new build luxury studios, suites and apartments are available in an area called ‘Le Village’. There are even exclusive ‘treehouses’ for sale located in a nearby forest, representing the most luxurious and unusual properties available across the resort. All of the properties for sale are a short walk from facilities such as the château spa centre (more on the facilities shortly) and have vistas across the soon-to-be manicured golf course down to the resort’s sparkling lakes. These
homes are designed to complement the existing original buildings found in ‘Le Village’ and will be finished to an incredible standard. Prices start from £13,000 for a 1/13th fraction of a studio apartment and from £145,000 for full ownership of a studio apartment. In 2016 the world’s largest hotel group, Wyndham, partnered with the resort – great news for owners old and new, as the resort has become part of a loyalty program with over 41m members worldwide. The Wyndham Group has many brands, including Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Ramada, Days Inn, Wyndham Rewards®, the Registry Collection, English Country Cottages, Novasol, Wyndham Vacation Resorts and James Villas. Some of the facilities are already open and once fully complete, the plethora of facilities at the Wyndham Halcyon Retreat will include; a French spa (idyllically situated in a second sixteenth century turreted Château), 18-hole manicured golf course, indoor swimming centre with pools and flumes, children’s adventure zone, laser quest, mountain bike tracks, equestrian centre, two well-stocked fishing lakes, gym, fitness classes, wellness restaurant, boulangerie, delicatessen and boutiques. At Halcyon Developments Group our aim is to make your property purchase as hassle-free, secure, enjoyable and profitable as possible. Which is why when you do business with us you are given the reassurance of lifelong aftersales care, whether you are buying a holiday home or a property abroad to generate a return via a outright ownership property investment. Our service doesn’t stop once we’ve secured your reservation fee, from the moment you decide to buy through us to the time you decide to sell again, we will not only keep you up to date at every stage of your purchase but we’re also here to answer your every query from a faulty light bulb to a last minute change in plans. We are a team of highly qualified, competent and efficient young people, with extensive technical knowledge. We are enthusiastic about offering a wide range of excellent products at very competitive prices. We offer the following activities: KAYAK is a small, narrow watercraft which is propelled by a double-bladed paddle. The conditions of the lake are ideal for this sport because the calm water and pleasanttemperature will mean you have an unforgettable experience. UG A person who is so ugly they dont deserve the second syllable. Unicorn That girl that you can't catch. Everything about her is so perfect (divine, if you will) getting with her is unfathomable. She is truly a blessing from God. Bumping into her on the sidewalk is a good day. Holding a conversation with her... you were probably dreaming. Anything beyond that - good luck. It takes time, effort, and a whole lot of persistency. But never give up; unicorns are said to be "uncatchable," but nothing is impossible. Impossible is nothing. Under no circumstances, never ever, not ever, at no time, should you ever marry a girl who is not your unicorn... Unless you have some super square wheels, then you should look up the word ‘Swamp Donkey’. Everyone has a unicorn; it's just a matter of spotting her and tracking her down. Give it time, it will happen. "For destiny grants us our wishes, but in its own way, in order to give us something beyond our wishes. Applying The Law Of Attraction To Your Thoughts Rhonda Byrnes’ best-selling book, “The Law of Attraction,” brought to light many things about how our thoughts determine what our lives can be. The theory of The Law of Attraction says that what we project into the universe directly comes back to us to affect our lives either positively or negatively. It’s the old adage of, “What goes around comes around.” Creating a better life for yourself means that you need to rid your mind of negative thoughts and way of thinking about things that are occurring or that are imminent happenings in your life. You believe what you think about most. Knowing that, you can see that your thoughts might have a direct force in your life. So – change your way of thinking and you’ll change your life. That’s not as easy as you think. Just as winning a gold medal in the Olympics takes time and practice, so does thinking positive thoughts so that it becomes a habit in your life. Here are some “Law of Attraction” ways to turn your thoughts around and get what you want out of life: 1. Think about what you desire. Do you want a new career? A good relationship? Lose weight? Then, you have to think as if it’s already there rather than the wishing and emptiness you feel of not having those things. How would you act if you were CEO of your own company? What type of clothing would you wear if you were thin? Picture yourself in those scenarios and think
deeply about how it would feel and how others would look at you. Actually feel those feelings. Keep practicing and those feelings will eventually turn into reality if you put action behind the thoughts. 2. Think of emotions such as gratitude, passion and love. These are positive thoughts that will invite positive things and reactions into your life. The trick here is that if something happens that’s negative in your life – even though you’re thinking positive – you have to be the one to take control and not let the negative happenings control your life. 3. Create positive thought patterns. Positive thinking exercises can help you attract more of what you desire. When you think about it consciously, your subconscious mind begins to create situations that can bring people and circumstances that you need in your life. There are many ways to exercise your mind toward positive thinking. Online help is available, as are some very well-written books about the subject. Begin now to use The Law of Attraction to transform your life into the best it can be. And if you haven’t yet read my book, Law of Attraction Shortcut Secrets, keep an eye out as I’m soon going to be releasing a box set with my Law of Attraction book, and Else Byskov’s Art of Attraction! Rental Contracts (Spanish Urban Leasing Law), which covers all rentals in residential areas in Spain, stipulates that any rental contract should have an unwavering period of three years duration for the tenant. In order to avoid the obligatory stipulated rental period of three years people mistakenly think that by stating in the contract that it is for a period of 11 months, or stating that it is a seasonal rental, or that it is not the tenant’s habitual residence, that this means that the three year period does not apply. However, these clauses are invalid because they do not comply with the law. According to the Law, a rental is considered residential unless the rental contract specifically specifies that the apartment or house is not legally considered the habitual residence of the tenant and to ensure the legality of the contract the following points must be included:- Firstly, it must be made clear in the contract that the property subject of the contract is not the tenant's habitual residence, so the contract must clearly specify the address of the habitual residence of the tenant, which obviously cannot be the same one as that which is the subject of the contract. - Secondly, a reason justifying why the contract should be excluded from the housing lease regulation must be determined. That is to say the reason why the tenant needs to rent the property for a shorter period. For example: because the tenant is a student and the property is in the place where he studies;
or an employee or worker who needs temporary housing because of a specific job in that location. - Finally, you would have to state the duration of the contract, which should be specified as non-extendable and should coincide with the previous parameters, i.e. school year, or the period required for completing a job. It is important to emphasise that even if the above requirements are formally fulfilled, but in reality it is the habitual residence of the tenant, in a lawsuit it is more than likely that the Judge would favour the tenant and order the landlord who is responsible for the simulation in the contract to pay the costs. Legally, this type of Rental contract is not called a "Seasonal Contract", but a "Contract for Use Other than Housing". Therefore, it is important to have an expert lawyer to advise you on how to formulate a contract using the correct legal terminology. Marbellasolicitorsgroup has a team of specialized lawyers who can help and assist you with this and any other legal matters. A-Z Of Spain Follow The Sentinella’s journey through the alphabet to discover the joys of Spain. Of course in true Sentinella style we start with the letter A. Andalucia: Apart from the 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, miles of beaches and beautiful mountain ranges, what else attracts us to this culture rich area of Spain? For me it wasn’t the power cuts, water shortages or shellfish con ojos. In fact it was that ‘mañana mañana’ attitude which most of us have grumbled about at some stage, especially when we have waited in for 7 days for the washing machine to arrive. However, this is the very thing that makes Andalucia so fantastic - a place to relax and immerse ourselves in the chilled-out ways of life. Who cares if the washng machine even takes an extra 10 days to arrive? It’s an excuse to go and buy some new clothes and even better if you manage to combine it when the ‘Rebajas’ are on!
flavour-some type, which is ideal for frying and baking with. Olive oil contains more than 90 per cent olives, in addition to Omega 3, which is said to help reduce cholesterol levels.
Ajo (garlic): If you eat a traditional Spanish dish remember to buy some mints. The chances are it contains a reasonable amount of garlic, which is a good thing, as the health benefits it brings are plentiful. Apart from zapping bacteria and warding off nasty coughs and colds, garlic also helps to lower blood pressure and prevents cancer. It is said to keep vampires at bay. Tip: If you are prone to mozzie bites scoff your face with the stuff!
Aceite de Olivia (Or Olive Oil, as we know and love it). Here it amazes me just how many different types of this yellowy green slippery stuff smother the supermarket shelves here. It’s the only cooking oil that comes in a variety of different flavours, from bland to peppery to sweet. & t i Fru Facts age Veg Cabb d Re
The health benefits of the humble red cabbage include prevention of premature ageing and cancer, skin and eye care, weight loss and a boosted immune system. It is also good for increasing bone density, detoxifying the body, preventing diabetes, improving heart health, slowing down the onset of Alzheimer’s and treating ulcers. Red cabbage is a nutritious and delicious vegetable that has become very popular throughout the world. Also known as purple cabbage or red kraut, it is a member of the Brassicaceae family and can be found throughout Northern Europe, America, and parts of China. It is often used as a pH indicator, since it changes colour depending on the pH balance of the soil in which it grows. It also keeps much better than traditional cabbage, meaning that it doesn’t need to be consumed or pickled to last a winter. One of the main reasons why red cabbage is such a popular vegetable addition to meals is the wealth of phytochemicals, antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. These essential components include thiamin, riboflavin, folate, calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, and potassium, as well as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin K, dietary fibre and the B vitamins. Its organic compounds are almost too many to list, but its antioxidants — such as anthocyanins and indoles — are extremely valuable for human health. One of the most important functions of red cabbage is its role in cancer prevention. The high levels of antioxidants make it extremely important as a preventative measure. The indoles in red cabbage have been connected to reducing breast cancer in women in a number of studies. Vitamin A has also been connected with reducing the chances of lung cancer. Red cabbage is very low in calories but high
in dietary fibre. This means that it leaves you feeling full and takes care of your nutritional needs, without encouraging you to eat more food. This can be a great addition to your daily diet if you are trying to lose weight, maintain a diet regimen or simply reduce your intake of calories. There are a number of aspects in red cabbage that makes it ideal for keeping you looking young. Antioxidants keep your skin fresh, tight and flexible, reducing the wrinkles and age spots. Furthermore, the high levels of vitamin A in red cabbage is very beneficial for skin health, regrowth of skin cells, protection from sun damage and the elasticity of the skin. The high levels of vitamin A are also good for your eyes. Vitamin A helps keep the eyesight healthy and prevents macular degeneration and cataract formation. It can also be converted into beta-carotene, which is very important for maintaining eye health as you age. Red cabbage contains a large amount of a specific amino acid called glutamine. This is very good for reducing the inflammation and pain associated with ulcers in the gastrointestinal system. Red cabbage juice is specifically the best treatment for this condition, and has been used as a home remedy for a very long time. Alzheimer’s disease often strikes as we get older. Red cabbage has been found to be very potent in protecting people’s cognitive activity. A certain type of plaque is what causes a great deal of the memory and cognitive loss in Alzheimer’s patients, but the anthocyanins in red cabbage specifically reduce the occurrence of this plaque. A word of caution, though: If you suffer from hypothyroidism, it is recommended that you stay away from red cabbage. Also, most doctors recommend not consuming it while pregnant.

The History Of Velez Malaga Velez Malaga is situated 35kms east of Malaga and it is soaked in fascinating history. Its most noticeable landmark is the 13th century hill top fortress La Fortaleza, which towers above the Old Town. It has a population of some 78,000 and fishing, agriculture, cultivation of fruit, ceramics and olive oil production are its main industries. There are many legends associated with the town’s origins. Some identify Velez with Sexi, the capital of the ancient region of Sexitania, while others attribute its founding to Velez, the Lybian Hercules. Archaeological excavations confirm Velez was inhabited in prehistoric times, and the walls of a Phoenician town were found near the mouth of the River Velez on Los Toscanos Estate. The highest peak is La Maroma, which is covered in snow during the winter and soars over two thousand metres. It can be reached on foot and those people who make it to the top can marvel at the breathtaking view of the coast. In the 18th century (1704) one of the most important naval battles of the War of Succesion took place at Velez. A Franco-Spanish fleet and the combined forces of the English and Dutch navies engaged in a battle involving 146 ships and almost 50,000 men. Now that’s a big battle. There was no real victor and the Anglo-Dutch side withdrew to the port of Gibraltar, while the French and Spanish headed for Malaga.
Back in that old town, at Arrabal de San Sebastian, there is a picturesque area of narrow streets interspersed by attractive mansions built in the 16th and 17th centuries. One such mansion includes the restored Palacio del Marques de Beniel, Plaza Palacio, which hosts the International summer school of the Axarquia covering all aspects of culture, including flamenco concerts. In addition to monuments there are a vast selection of churches to explore, including the 15th century church of Santa Maria la Mayor. Its beautiful tower still holds the minaret of the mosque that preceded it. Inside you will find an ornate Mudejar ceiling. This church was the first building to be erected by the Christians following their victory over the Moors. The Convento de Las Carmelitas, founded in 1669, houses an array of interesting 18th century paintings. In the centre of Velez Malaga there is a modern theatre, called Teatro del Carmen, which boasts a regular programme of performances. Fact: On Christmas Day, December 25th, in 1884 the village of Velez and its municipal area were hit by a major tremor known as the Andalusian Earthquake. Six people died and there was much material damage.
In the Roman times, under the name of Menoba, the town boasted a walled hill with four exits and its peak was for fortress. In 1487 Ferdinand conquered the town and the Christian flag was raised on the castle’s battlements as the Moors were ridded. There are a number of monuments strewn around the town, including an Arab fortress in the old town dating from the 8th century. However, the main feature is a 13th century well-restored Moorish Castle, which offers good surrounding views of the countryside.

He married consumer activist Lola Van Wagenen in 1958, but they divorced in 1985 after having four children. His firstborn son died of sudden infant death syndrome — a fate which also befell Paul Newman. Redford married his current wife, Sibylle Szaggers, in 2009 after the couple had been together for 13 years.
American actor, director, producer and heart-throb Robert Redford — nicknamed Bob — was born in 1936 in Santa Monica, California. He is of English, Scottish and Irish ancestry.
In 1995 he was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history, and was voted the 30th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly.
Redford courted trouble in his youth, stealing hubcaps in school and losing his college baseball scholarship at the University of Colorado because of drunkenness.
In Germany he shares his dubbing voice with Patrick Stewart and Sir Anthony Hopkins. He was awarded an honorary Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 2002.
After leaving university, he spent some time drifting across America, spending some time working in the California oil fields. Having saved enough he moved to Europe, studying art in Paris and Florence. Back in the States he enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and started acting.
As of 2014, has appeared in four films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar — Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), All the President's Men (1976) and Out of Africa (1985). Of those, The Sting (1973) and Out of Africa (1985) are winners in the category. And in addition, he directed two more films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: Quiz Show (1994) and the winner Ordinary People (1980).
He made his stage debut in 'Tall Story' and in 1962, was signed for the stage production of 'Barefoot in the Park'. This was a smash hit but it wasn't until five years later, when it was filmed, that he became an important star. Television and stage experience coupled with all-American good looks led to numerous movies and television roles. His breakthrough role was as the Sundance Kid in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), when the actor was 32. He remained lifelong friends with co-star Paul Newman. The Way We Were (1973) and The Sting (1973), both in 1973, made Redford the number one box office star for the next three years. Redford used his clout to advance environmental causes and his riches to acquire Utah property, which he transformed into a ranch and the Sundance ski resort. In 1980, he established the Sundance Institute for aspiring filmmakers. Its annual film festival has become one of the world's most influential.
He dislikes watching his own films — he has said the only film in which he was completely satisfied with his own performance was The Sting (1973).
He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award, by President Barack Obama in a live televised ceremony held in the East Room of the White House, on November 22, 2016. He once said in interview “As a director, I wouldn't like me as an actor. As an actor, I wouldn't like me as a director.”
To advertise call 664 210 468 or email sales@thesentinella.com £2.4million payout Jamie and Louise Redknapp gave themselves a massive payout from their advertising agency, JFR, prior to their divorce, according to The Sun. The couple were married for 19 years and announced their split last December. They were divorced in a 25-second hearing later that month. Mrs Redknapp had filed the petition, claiming the marriage had irretrievably broken down because of Mr Redknapp’s 'unreasonable behaviour.' However, it has now emerged that they had already reached an agreement over 'financial arrangements.' The Sun has reported that Jamie, 45, and Louise, 43, paid themselves £2.4million ahead of their divorce — £1.4 million in 2016 and a further £1 million last July. It appears that the pair have no plans to leave the firm, JFR, (Jamie Frank Redknapp) which was set up in 2002. Holiday hit for Clooney George Clooney, 57, is reportedly ‘recovering well’ following a scooter accident in Italy. The American actor and director was seen hobbling off a private plane in Rome, but a spokesman has insisted that Clooney was not seriously injured in the crash, which happened while he was on holiday in Sardinia. A source told MailOnline that Clooney had been on his way to the set of his new Hulu TV series, Catch 22, when his scooter was hit by a car. Clooney, who had been wearing a helmet, reportedly hit his head on the windshield, which shattered on impact. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors treated him for injuries to the pelvis, hip, and knees. 'George was treated and released from hospital. He is recovering at home and will be fine,' a PR rep told PEOPLE. Knitty gritty EastEnders ‘hard man’ actor Danny Dyer has revealed a passion for, of all things, knitting. said he is a huge fan of the craft, and has even been inundated with winter wear requests from his nearest and dearest. Speaking at Elstree Studios, he said: 'Yeah. I'm a bit of a dab hand with the knitting stuff.' He even joked he had found a new talent in knitting, adding: 'I'm getting orders for jumpers and scarves. It's relaxing, too.’ His wife Joanne also revealed that he was knitting more than ever because he missed his daughter Dani, 21, who has been appearing on the TV reality show Love Island.

Breaking The Ice (Part 2): Strengthening A Frozen Shoulder As your range of motion improves, add rotator cuff–strengthening exercises to the stretching exercises featured in the last Sentinella. Be sure to warm up your shoulder and do your stretching exercises before you perform strengthening exercises 1. Outward rotation Hold a rubber exercise band between your hands with your elbows at a 90-degree angle close to your sides. Rotate the lower part of the affected arm outward two or three inches and hold for five seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times, once a day.
2. Inward Rotation Stand next to a closed door, and hook one end of a rubber exercise band around the doorknob. Hold the other end with the hand of the affected arm, holding your elbow at a 90-degree angle. Pull the band toward your body two or three inches and hold for five seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times, once a day. Once you feel your range of movement and strength is 100% then you may go back to normal exercises and everyday use, however keep in mind if it hurts then stop, rest and listen to your body. Face Packs For All Skin Types Next time your complexion is in desperate need of a pick-up, open the fridge and feed your skin some real beauty. Try this egg-based recipe for dry skin... Take the yolk of one egg. Mix in two spoonfuls of rose water and one spoonful of honey and preserve. Use once a week. For wrinkles... Take the white of an egg, beat it and mix in three spoonfuls of oat powder and one spoonful of honey. Smooth over the face. For very dry skin... Add the yolk of one egg, two spoonfuls of orange juice, half a spoon of lemon juice and a few drops of sweet almond oil. Mix well and apply it. Keep it on for half an hour before rinsing. To cool... Grind fresh green mint and apply the paste on your skin for 20-25 minutes. It absorbs internal heat of your skin. To soften... Peel a cucumber and grind it fine. Add unboiled milk and apply.
For normal skin... Blend equal quantities of strawberries, grapes, pears, apples and oranges in a blender. Apply a thin film of honey on the face and apply. Let it stand for 30 minutes before rinsing. For pigmentation or scarring... Powder orange peels and blend in curds. Apply to scarred or pigmented areas and wash off after 15 minutes with cool water. For combination skin... Grate the skin of a cucumber and a potato and apply evenly on the face and neck. This absorbs the oil and leaves your skin taut. Rub in plenty of moisturiser after washing the mixture off your face. For oily skin... Acidic fruits like oranges and lemons are best for oily skin. Squeeze out the juice and apply evenly. For men... If you’re going to watch, don’t laugh. Instead appreciate what we go through to stay beautiful for you!

Great Inventions Where would we be if it wasn’t for the likes of Graham Bell or Sir Frank Whittle. A frightening question! Inventions make our world the glorious place it is (cough, cough). Here are a few of the best inventions and the brains behind them. Hovercraft - Christopher Cockerell - 1956 The hovercraft moves across the surface of the water floating on a layer of air. Christopher tested his invention in 1955 using an empty Kitekat tin inside a coffee tin, an industrial air blower and a pair of kitchen scales. Don’t ask how, that’s another story! This led to the first commercially used hovercraft - the SRN1 - to be created. Barbie Doll - Ruth Handler - 1959 The Barbie doll was named after Ruth’s daughter Barbara. The doll, (intended to be a teenage fashion doll) was introduced to the world at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Ken was named after Ruth’s son. Sounds incestuous! Now four-year-olds accross the globe have Barbie written at the
top of their Christmas lists. Barbie first had bendable legs in 1965. Now that’s something you didn’t know - The Sentinella is a haven for important information! Crossword - Arthur Wynn - 1913 The British born journalist, who emigrated to the United States published his first crossword (then called wordcross) in the New York World on December 21, 1913. Wynne based the puzzle on a similar much older game called Magic Squares. Jigsaw Puzzle - John Spilsbury - 1767 Spilsbury was an engraver and map maker. The first jigsaw puzzle he made was of a map of the world. He attached a map to a piece of wood and cut around the shape of each country. Students learnt their geography by putting Spilsbury’s puzzle back together. Did you know... The first soup dates back to 6000BC, with the main ingredient being hippopotamus and other animal bones. Give me a can of Heinz Tomato any day!

People Who Come And Go Property Buying Essentials Summer is a difficult time for an estate agent! Firstly, house hunting in 35 degrees C is not a very enjoyable thing to do, especially when your Northern and Central European clients think 6 or 7pm is a bad time to start viewings – that’s the time to have an evening meal! But even at 6 or 7pm in August, it is too hot to walk the boundaries of a large country estate in the mountains in Andalusia! The other problem is the number of people who are actually principally on holiday, and only vaguely thinking about buying. If you are a serious house hunter, whatever the time of year, I highly recommend not only bearing in mind the time and effort that the agents put in to arranging appointments, driving clients, often all day, across long distances, and afterwards, seeking out and passing on feedback to vendors. It is also important to bear in mind your OWN time and effort. Here are a few things any would-be buyer needs to think about very carefully before requesting viewings: - Think carefully about the areas you like best. Take time on a first trip to visit areas,
check out amenities, distances to towns/coast/airport, whatever is important to you. Once you have decided on one, or two areas, then start thinking: -What sort of property are you looking for? This starts with what you want to use it for: a permanent home often has different requirements (garden, garage, neighbours, or lack of) than a holiday home (convenience, access, rental potential, pool, etc). - Think very carefully about your budget, what you can genuinely afford, plus 10% for costs, and make contact in advance with a recommended lawyer. - Read up about what you can and can’t do here in terms of building, businesses, etc, and seek advice in advance. - If you need a mortgage, work out what actual funds you have to put into the property and take advice on what the bank will realistically offer you on top. Once you have all this clear – contact the agent! Hoping that this information is helpful to someone! By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advertisement below)

The Red Cross / Cruz Roja Espanola Have you ever considered to help out with the Red Cross here in Spain, they are looking for English speaking volunteers. If you can help, please contact them. Here is a list of some of the things that the Red Cross is doing locally and planning to do in 2018:• Collections of food and children's toys for Christmas and the Night of the Kings to help families in need. • Publicity in local English-language papers, magazines and social media to raise awareness and seek volunteers. • Presentations to local groups in El Morche, Colmenar and Nerja with more planned in Competa and La Viñuela/Puente don Manuel. • Cultural activities - walking tour of the 'Cruces de Mayo' (25 people) and a Tourist Train trip around Velez-Malaga (50 people) with an English speaking guide. • Recruitment and training of new English-speaking volunteers - now 10 in total. • Assistance to a number of people including:- Food and clothing for someone who was homeless plus advice on how to obtain meals
via Social Services. - Advice to a homeless person and the offer of support if needed (ongoing). - Advice to a person with various disabilities and the offer of a volunteer to help to attend appointments (ongoing). - Emergency help and advice to a person following a bereavement. • The installation of an emergency call-button alarm system for a number of people linked to a Red Cross call centre with English-speaking operative. With the recruitment of new volunteers, we are planning a number of activities including:• Publicity - to raise awareness of services available such as emergency aid (food, clothes, shoes etc..), the loan of aids such as crutches and wheelchairs, SOS alarms, accompaniment for appointments and activities for older people particularly those with memory loss. • Fundraising. • Weekly activities for older people including informative talks, memory stimulation and cultural events. We hope to offer these in Torrox from September 2018. The Red Cross is essentially a voluntary organisation with over 98% of the people linked to the Vélez-Málaga office being volunteers, and less than 2% employees. As such, the services that we want to offer can only be delivered by recruiting more English-speaking volunteers, and so we hope that more people will come forward to join the team. There is no minimum level of commitment, and it is very rewarding and a great opportunity to make a difference to the lives of people in need.
If you would like to find out more about the services offered or how to become a volunteer please contact Richard Weale by email: 29094social@cruzroja.es

Funny Ice Cream Pics :) One of the most lovely things about our part of the world is finding those lovely out of the way places which are just that bit unusual, quirky, unique and well worth the visit. Look no further, La Vaqueria in Benamargosa is exactly that...a beautiful drive out along the Benamargosa river valley; pretty hillsides covered with avocados, mangoes, lemons and pretty almond blossom along the tops in the Spring brings you to something completely different! Not so easy to find but it is on Google maps and there are ample signs once you reach the village, a large blue wall covered in signs with overhanging mature avocado trees and ample parking intrigues most visitors as to what may lay beyond. The pretty stone paved entrance is shaded by vines and bougainvillea leading you through into a delightful shaded garden and cosy patio area... colour in the form of mosaics and recycled artworks grabs your attention in every direction... the longer you sit and gaze the more you see! The relaxed bohemian atmosphere is charming, the welcome genuine and the menu an eclectic mix of flavours and styles, from all day English breakfasts to wok style vegetables, from traditional home made cakes and home made ginger beer to cocktails and vegetarian and vegan tapas. The gift shops boasts a lovely selection of hand made arty crafty ideas and there are regular classes and workshops to sign up for as well as live music and Sunday dinners every week. The musicians and all of the extra events can be found posted on face book, La Vaqueria. You will not be disappointed!

Axarquia Sports Page TorreTorrox Golf Society played its monthly competition at Parador de Malaga Golf Course in July. The Parador is an 18-hole, par-72 and 6,173 metre length course situated between the airport and the sea, with the course having three holes running alongside the nudist beach! The Parador de Malaga golf course's origins date back to the 1920s and are linked to the British royal family. In 1920, construction began on the original 9-hole golf course under the technical supervision of Harry Shapland Colt (builder of Wentworth). Under the direction and design of renowned British architect Tom Simpson (creator of such famous golf courses as Turnberry, Muirfield and Ballybunion), it was expanded in 1925 to 18 holes (6173m, par 72). Years of history have made this golf course—the oldest in Andalusia —both challenging for experienced players and achievable for any golf enthusiast. Sand dunes, palms, mimosas, eucalyptus and pines skirt the golf course. The course record is held by Malaga native Miguel Ángel Jiménez with 63 strokes, set during the 1999 PGA Turespaña Masters,
which he won. The course is in good condition however is not your typical Costa del Sol golf experience and I would recommend it if you are after a more casual game of golf. The winner on the day with a whopping 42 points was Michael Goodwin followed closely by Nick Gordon and third was Steven Collison. The shortest drive competition was one by our Scottish contingent with first prize going to Mr Ben Doon followed by Phil McCracken and third place was taken by Jacque Meoff.....well done gentlemen. The Closest to the Pin was run over all four of the par threes and the champions in this competition where Keith Evans, Rob Goodwin, Michael Goodwin and James Collier. The ‘’Thanks for Turning Up’’ was easily won by our guest Mr. Victor Kane who romped home with 16 points. The next competition is on the first Saturday in August at Alhaurin Golf Club, so if you want to play, look us up on Facebook and make contact to get your name down. FB: TorreTorrox Golf Society

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Burghley House, near Stamford, Lincolnshire, is a most grand property of the Elizabethan period. The gardens, too, are superb. The house was built by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, during the mid to late 16th Century. Queen Victoria visited in 1844, as many other noble visitors have, to this day, enjoying the House and the wonderful gardens.
and Cross Country attract a lot of interest, during the days of the event, with intense competition between those taking part. Olympic mounts of the future are judged at these events. The Stallion Parade makes quite a show and the Concours d’ Elégance is very grand. With the presentation of horses and riders, the display rings and the whole site, a lot of praise must go to the ground crew and all involved, as months of planning go into this event, to make it the success it always is. Different displays and competitions take place on each of the days. It is not necessary to be a complete equine expert to enjoy this event. There is something for everyone and every age, to be found at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials take place, in the grounds of Burghley House, each year. This annual event is one of the six leading events of its kind in the world. Burghley has been holding horse trials here since 1961, when the 6th Marquess of Exeter arranged an event that proved so popular, and grew year on year, to what is now, the very best of international eventing. Thousands of visitors attend the venue, during the days of the horse trials, with much ‘retail therapy’ to be had, too. Clothing, footwear, leather goods, gifts, food and beverages, glassware, sculptures, paintings and beauty products, are just some, from the range of items available. I always allow myself time to visit these very interesting retail exhibitors. Dressage, Show Jumping
If you want to escape the hot weather here in Spain this summer, mayybe this event is right up your street. This year’s event will take place on Thursday 30 August to Sunday 02 September 2018. www.burghley-horse.co.uk www.burghley.co.uk
