m Fro Ed... the Happy New Year to you all… I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and, like me, partied into the early hours of the New Year, welcoming in 2019 with good friends and of course a little bevy or two!

I also hope you didn’t choke on your grapes — eating just 12 grapes in time to the chimes of the clock sounds easy-peasy …. but all of you who have tried it will know it just isn’t that simple! Well you maybe won’t believe it but after 12 moves in 12 years of living in sunny Axarquia, I am well and truly done with packing boxes, unpacking, packing, unpacking, packing... cancelling internet contracts, re-installing them, paying agents’ finders fees, paying a month’s rent in advance — and on some occasions never seeing it again — signing contracts, dealing with landlords from hell, serving a notice period, paying for removal men and generally having my life ruled by other people. Don’t get me wrong: I have said before that I don’t really mind the ‘moving process’ that much but as I am sure many of you reading this will understand, rentals in this area — especially in Torre del Mar — are so hard to find these days, which in turn makes the whole moving process very stressful and on some occasions, a near-impossible task within the limited timescales that are available. I think I could actually write a bestseller about rental experiences ... and on second thoughts, maybe I should!

Well, I can finally put all that renting lark behind me as I have recently been lucky enough to find my very own little pad to buy here in Torre del Mar. Well, it’s not so little actually — it has the most amazing outside space, which can be a criterion sometimes difficult to find. At the same time, it’s still just a

Strange News 10-minute walk into town, if that. The only downside was having to clean it before moving in as whoever was there before me must have had a dog and didn’t know the meaning of the word ‘clean’! I would like to thank a few people throughout the process who helped me to complete; their professionalism was fantastic at every moment throughout the sale. Carmen Silvia Abogado, based in Torre del Mar, was exceptionally professional and meticulous in her attention to detail, keeping me up to date on the whole process and for making it as stress-free as possible. See her advert on page 21. Pia from Country Properties Estate Agents in Torre del Mar was extremely helpful to me on more than one occasion too, so a mega thank you to both of you, see advert on page 22. I also want to thank Angela and Austin from Buy a Home Spain in Torre del Mar for helping me over the past 12 years in finding me the best available rental properties each time I moved, see advert on pages 66 & 67. On that note, I would like to wish all you lovely clients, readers, friends and family a wonderful and prosperous 2019. Let’s hope it’s a good one for us all. Have a great month x

Mega ouch An enormous bladder stone, compared to the size of an ostrich egg, was removed from a man’s stomach in Wuhan, China recently. The 55-year-old patient, known only as Zhou, began experiencing discomfort in June but delayed seeking help for several months. As soon as doctors at the Wuhan Jingdu Hospital realised he was carrying the 13cm (5.1 inch) stone, they decided he needed surgery ‘immediately’. Dr Wang Hui added: ‘The bladder stone was larger than an adult human’s fist, taking up his entire bladder. If not quickly removed, it could have led to renal failure.’ As Zhou suffered from heart problems, surgeons decided against a general anaesthetic – instead numbing his abdominal region before removing the stone using their hands. The retrieved bladder stone is the biggest ever found at the hospital. Dr Wang said it was caused by the patient’s own habits, including not drinking enough water, sitting for extended periods of time and holding in his urine. Santa crawls An inflatable Santa became an internet sensation after causing traffic chaos when it broke free from its moorings in Cambridgeshire. Motorists were unable to drive home for Christmas thanks to the escapee, which had broken free from a garden and drifted onto the B198 Cromwell Road in Wisbech. The stricken Santa blocked both lanes for several hours, meaning motorists struggled to get ho-ho-home. Taxi driver Muhammad Fareed captured the footage of the stricken Santa on camera as he waited in a queue of traffic. ‘I saw it wobble and then come down on to the road – it did raise a smile,’ he said. ‘A car driver put on his hazards lights and two guys came out and tried to puncture it and take it off the road, but it was really, really big and so hard to move — it was massive, bigger than my seven-seater car.’ Eventually Santa was cornered and deflated.

Strange News (Continued) Hot news A gender reveal stunt in Arizona, USA, went disastrously wrong, sparking a 47,000-acre wildfire that caused $8,200,000 damage. Border Patrol agent Dennis Dickey had come up with a hair-brained scheme to tell the world the gender of his unborn child. He planned to fire a gun at a target that would explode with either pink or blue powder. However, the 37-year-old had also packed the target with the legal but explosive compound Tannerite, which has been linked to wildfires. When Dickey fired the rifle, his gunshot ignited the nearby dry grass and mesquite trees. The flames spread rapidly and took 800 firefighters a week to get under control. Known as the Sawmill fire, it raged along Arizona’s Highway 83 and forced hundreds of people from their homes. Dennis made the elaborate stunt to reveal the gender of his and wife Rita’s unborn baby — a boy. Luckily there were no injuries and no buildings were destroyed. Dickey has now pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a fire without a permit. He has
agreed to make an initial £100,000 payment and compensation of $8,188,069. (£6,422,000). The embarrassed new father will also have to star in public service videos warning against copycat attempts. Dogpper anyone? Any dog owner knows the difficulty of eating when a hungry pet is around — the head tilt, the sad eyes and sometimes a downright cheeky attempt to steal your meat. Burger King recently added actual dog food to the menu so man and his best friend could eat together in harmony. The fast food chain announced a new line of products for dogs, known as Dogppers – or ‘flame-grilled, Whopper-flavoured dog biscuits’. Owners who purchased their own Whopper through the delivery service DoorDash received a free treat for their pooch. Dogppers are made of ‘oat flour, brown rice flour, beef, cheddar cheese, eggs and sesame seeds’ – and not for human cosumption. Sadly, the treats were only available Stateside and just until December.

De Cotta Law Issues with Local Tax Bills This year, we have been receiving notifications, on behalf of some of our clients, from the Town Hall and ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ regarding unpaid local tax bills (IBI, rubbish and Vehicle Entrance), especially for the Nerja and Torrox areas. There appear to be several reasons for this. One being that the ‘Catastro’ periodically update their records and revalue properties without prior warning. Meaning that they then issue a backdated IBI bill with the amount of IBI owing based on the updated valuation of the property; they are only allowed to issue a backdated bill for up to four years previous. Another reason is that the direct debits are being cancelled because of insufficient funds in the account, or due to a change of title name on the bills, or because the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ does not have the property owner’s NIE number on record (they cannot issue any bill without this information). If the bank rejects a payment, the direct debit will be automatically cancelled and the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ is under no obligation to inform or notify anyone. If a direct debit is arranged before a change of title is actioned, the direct debit will be cancelled once the bill is in the name of the new owner; the title of the bill and the bank account holder cannot differ. Again, the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ is under no obligation to inform or notify anyone of the cancellation, therefore, it is better to arrange the direct debits once the change of title has been actioned. The direct debits cannot be re-arranged until all pending local tax bills are paid. In order to try and avoid this from happening in the future, it is imperative that property owners ensure that there are sufficient funds in their bank account, and that they monitor whether or not the automatic payments are being deducted from the designated bank account.
It is also important to mention that the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ recently experienced some administrative issues, and all IBI bills were issued late this year. There have also been issues with the local tax bills for some areas of Torrox, in that the majority have not been printed correctly. This means that these bills need to be checked and confirmed with the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ before payment. If property owners have any doubts about the payment of the local tax bills (particularly in the Torrox area), or they are not receiving the bills in their name (or any at all), please contact Helen Bacon direct at helenbacon@decottalaw.net or call +34 952 527 014. Insurance Claims Stupid statments to give you a chuckle...
I didn’t think the speed limit applied until after midnight.
I thought my window was down, but I found it was up when I put my head through it.
I had been shopping for plants all day and was on my way home. As I reached an intersection a hedge sprang up, obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car.
As I approached an intersection a sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.
The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.
In an attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.
I was going at about 70 or 80mph when my girlfriend reached over and grabbed my testicles so I lost control.
I saw two kangaroos having it off in the middle of the road. So I hit them, which caused me to ejaculate through the sunroof.
I was on the way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way causing me to have an accident.
I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows.
On approach to the traffic lights the car in front suddenly broke.
The telephone pole was approaching. I was attempting to swerve out of the way when I struck the front end.
The accident was caused by me waving to the man I hit last week.
I pulled into the side of the road because there was smoke coming from under the bonnet. I realised there was a fire in the engine, so I took my dog and smothered it with a blanket.
Windshield broke. Cause unknown. Probably Voodoo.
The claimant had collided with a cow. The questions on the claim form were: (Q) What warning was given to you? (A) A horn. (Q) What warning was given by the other party? (A) A moo.
I had been learning to drive with power steering. I turned the wheel to what I thought was enough and found myself in a different direction going the opposite way.
No witneses would admit having seen the mishap until after it happened.
Noone was blamed for the accident but it would never have happened if the other driver had been alert.
The accident happened when the right front door of a car came round the corner without giving a signal.

Great Inventions Here are some great inventions, together with their genius inventors and a little information about each one The coffee filter was invented by Melissa Bentz, in Germany in 1908. She pierced holes in a tin container, put a circular piece of absorbent paper in the bottom of it and put her creation over a coffee pot. Ferdinand Porsche, who later went on to build sports cars bearing his own name, designed the original 1936 Volkswagen.
The ‘spot’ on 7UP comes from its inventor who had red eyes. He was albino. The man who invented shorthand, John Gregg, was deaf. The American State of Maine was once known as the “Earmuff Capital of The World”. Earmuffs were invented there by Chester Greenwood in 1873.
The first commercial vacuum cleaner was so large it was mounted on a wagon. People threw parties in their homes so guests could watch the new device do its job. The shoestring was invented in England in 1790, prior to this time all shoes were fastened with buckles.

Y Factors The Y Factors are back! Here are some Y Factors, some everyday occurences in life, which are crying out to be questioned! WHY??? ...Do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are flat? ...Do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough? ...Does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet? ...Doesn’t glue stick to the bottle? ...Do they use sterilised needles for death by lethal injection? ...Doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? ...Does the word lisp have an S in it? Just plain cruel!
...Are there still apes if people evolved from ape? ...Does a round pizza come in a square box? ...Do people say they “slept like a baby” when most babies wake up every two hours? ...Do people say “The alarm just went off” when really it just came on? ...Is it called a soap opera when nobody sings? ...Is there never a full English dinner or tea but there is always a full English Breakfast? ...Do the numbers on phones go down while the numbers on a calculator go up? ...Don’t the hairs on your arms get split ends? ...Do your fingers and toes get wrinkly in the bath and nothing else does?

Life In The 1500s A bit of a history lesson for you, but a fairly interesting one too! In the 1500s, most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled fairly good by June. However, they were starting to pong a bit, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. That is where the custom of carrying a bouquet when getting married originates from. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then as you can imagine the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” In those days they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added various delights to the pot.
They ate mostly vegetables and not much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner and the leftovers would remain in the pot to get cold overnight. The same process would occur the next day. Sometimes stew contained food that had been in the pot for quite a while. That’s where the rhyme came from, “Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old,” There you are.. if that doesn’t help you to get through the January blues then I don’t know what will!

Attention! Holiday Property Owners Holiday property owners - Are you paying too much to run your air conditioning? How much of that is energy wasted by guests leaving air conditioners on in empty rooms? Climateq explains how to easily reduce these costs and increase your profit. Right across the holiday property rental sector, the challenges associated with reducing energy consumption are on the increase. However, when you consider that typical savings of up to 50% can be made by implementing simple, affordable controls, it's not hard to see why it makes good sense to take control of your property's energy use without compromising the comfort of your guest’s. Every year, property owners are faced with huge energy bills because guests regularly leave air conditioners running while they’re out for the day. Adding to the problem is the amount of money that’s being wasted by guests turning the thermostat down to 16°c, easily adding an extra 30% to energy bills. And what about the additional repair costs
incurred because your expensive equipment is being left to run unnecessarily? Over the course of a rental season, these inflated charges add up, significantly reducing your profit margins. That's where we can help. Quite simply, Climateq puts you in control. Our British designed and manufactured controls offer an easy and affordable way to reduce energy waste in your holiday property without affecting the comfort of your guests. The WiREMS-HP is a simple but clever technology designed to turn off air conditioners once a room is unoccupied and limit the adjustable temperature to a sensible level. Our sensors can even detect open windows and doors turning the air conditioner off if either has been left open. This is intelligent control at its best. Contact us today and find out how much you could save. +44 (0)1202 556122 info@climateq.co.uk www.climateq.co.uk

Uses Of The Word Up Who would have thought that one teeny weeny word could have so many meanings...! When we awake in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election... ...and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver. We warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP
the old car. At other times the little word has really special meanings. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. This UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about the word UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary! In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about 30 definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with 100 or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it doesn’t rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so.... Time to shut UP!!

CBD For Your Pets Wellness for you and the ones you love! CBD for Pets. CBD, or Cannabidoil, is a compound found in cannabis. In fact, it is one of over 113 “cannabinoids” found in the cannabis plant, many of which are also being investigated for their potential health benefits. Now, keep this in mind: Just as CBD has helped humans (and still does every day) your dog can reap the same health-boosting and even life-saving benefits. The daily use of CBD as a preventive nutritional supplement has an enormous impact on our pets’ health, quality of life and treatment of different pathologies. For starters, CBD is non-psychoactive, which means that it does not contain the molecule THC responsible for the "high" associated with cannabis so results in relaxation without intoxication.
It is great for pets with separation anxiety or noise phobias — such as terror of New Year fireworks — and for its effects on treating stress in general. It is also a great anti-inflamatory which treats different kinds of pain. CBD is well known for being an effective treatment for epilepsy and a preventative supplement with significant anti-tumoural properties. Some other great benefits of CBD include the prevention of colitis and the restoration of normal gut movility; it has antibiotical properties, reduces autoimmune disease and protects the nervous system which helps with neurodegenerative diseases. With all this information and the love we have for our four-legged babies, we encourage all pet owners to start using CBD regularly in order to provide the wellness they deserve. See advert below

We now sell and hire these things to the general public — not just to film companies. My company has worked in many different places around Europe and the rest of the world — most recently in Morocco on a Channel 4 production called ‘Baghdad Central’. In the past we’ve worked for BBC, ITV, Netflix, AMC and Primetime, as well as many more film and TV companies. I buy some of the props from these productions, and then use them for other projects or sell them. I also have access to sources and suppliers in the different countries, so I can buy lots of interesting things that most people wouldn’t even get to see — I’ve added these to the collection. For eg: I collected antique Berber doors from Morocco and beautiful rugs from the Atlas mountains. As well as the props and furniture collection business, my wife and I restore old Spanish
Leilas
houses using the Al Andalus Arabic style in the restorations — these then become a showcase for some of our most beautiful things. With one house — ‘Maroto 8’ — finished and another project just starting its restoration, it means we can experiment with the style and contents. As well as the Arabic/Spanish style, we’ve collected lots of different things from many eras, from French antiques to mid-20th century upcycled and shabby chic. The props and furniture either come ready to be put straight into your home or can be restored or recovered to your own personal preference. I’m constantly looking for new and exciting places to visit and styles to mix and match to decorate the many beautiful homes and properties in Andalucia, and because of our work in the film and television industry, we never know what’s around the corner on the next production — it could be a stylish period drama or an exciting contemporary thriller. New Year’s Resolutions The tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. when a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar. With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year. Here’s a look at some of the good luck rituals from around the world. They are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity in the coming year. AUSTRIA - The suckling pig is the symbol of good luck for the New Year. It’s served on a table decorated with tiny edible pigs. Dessert often consists of green peppermint ice cream in the shape of a four-leaf clover. WALES - At the first toll of midnight, the back door is opened and then shut to release the old year and lock out all of its bad luck. Then at the twelfth stroke of the clock, the front door is opened and the New Year is welcomed with all of its luck. SICILY - An old Sicilian tradition says good luck will come to those who eat lasagne on New Year’s Day, but woe if you dine on macaroni, or any other noodle will bring bad luck. SPAIN - In Spain, the tradition consists of eating twelve grapes, one grape with each chime up to midnight bringing them 12 months of prosperity. GREECE - A special New Year’s bread is baked with a coin buried in the dough. The first slice is for the Christ child, the second for the father of the household and the third slice is for the house. If the third slice holds the coin, spring will come early that year. JAPAN - The Japanese decorate their homes in tribute to lucky gods. One tradition, kadomatsu, consists of a pine branch symbolising longevity, a bamboo stalk symbolising prosperity, and a plum blossom showing nobility.
CHINA - For the Chinese New Year, every front door is adorned with a fresh coat of red paint, red being a symbol of good luck and happiness. Although the whole family prepares a feast for New Year, all knives are put away for 24 hours to prevent anyone from cutting themselves, which is thought to cut the family’s good luck for the next year. NORWAY - Norwegians make rice pudding at New Year’s and hide one whole almond within. Guaranteed wealth goes to the person whose serving holds the lucky almond. The song “Auld Lang Syne,” is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English speaking country in the world to see in the New Year. In spite of the popularity of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, it has aptly been described as the song that nobody knows. Written by Robert Burns in 1741, it was first published in 1796 after Burns’ death. “Auld Lang Syne” literally means ‘old long ago,’ or simply, ‘the good old days.’

Say What?! Here is a list of common daily sayings and and their meanings: Like a red rag to a bull - This originates from the Spanish bullring where toreadors torment bulls by waving a red flag around. However, it is actually the movement of the flag, not the colour, which infuriates the bull. Mad as a hatter - Yes you and me alike! It was actually a mercury-based chemical used in the manufaturing of felt hats that was believed to be responsible for a bout of madness in those exposed to them for a long time. This, as you can imagine, caused hatters to be sterotyped as crazy cookies. Paying through the nose - Aren’t we all used to that...! Various theories apply to this particular phrase. One links it with early taxation imposed by Danish invaders, who punished dodgers by slitting their conks.. ouch!
Fagged out - This means totally and utterly cream crackered, or exhausted. Fag relates to the end of a length of rope that has become twisted and hence weaker than when in its original state. Falling on your feet - Often said when a potential catastrophe is reversed to one’s advantage. This stems from the fact that cats always land on their feet and as we all know the furry pets are blessed with 9 lives.

Non Residents Taxes WHICH TAXES NEED NON RESIDENTS HOUSE OWNERS IN SPAIN BE AWARE OF?
the Resident Income Tax and if we get the date wrong that could cause delays which result in extra charges.
If you are a non resident - that is, you have been living in Spain for less than 6 months and you own a property in our country you will need to be aware of the taxes you are required to pay, which are: the Non Residents Income Tax (IRNR) and the Property Tax (IBI) (local tax).
On the other hand, the IBI is a local tax which must be paid to the City Councils when we own a property in a town. The IBI is usually paid - although that can vary depending on the town - around September, October and November. For that purpose, the City Council issues every year a receipt for each property where we can find the amount to be paid, the bank account to which we can transfer the money and the deadline to pay it.
So if you have bought a property in Spain, being a non resident will not exempt you from these fiscal liabilities. Not only that, not fulfilling these responsibilities could indeed take the Spanish Tax Office (Agencia Tributaria) to do some research about you, which could also result in penalties and fines. Let’s explain a bit more about each of them: The Non Residents Income Tax (IRNR) is a fee which taxes the income obtained in the Iberian peninsula by non resident people or organisations. When it comes to submit the tax return, we will need to take into account national legislation and any other international agreements between Spain and other countries. Another important point we have to bear in mind is that a property may have one, two or more owners and each of them will be considered as an independent taxpayer, who will have to submit his own tax return. In other words, there will be as many tax returns as individuals and properties. As well, when a non resident owns a real state we can find two different situations: 1.- The purchased home is leased and that will bring revenue. In this case the owner must declare the income on a quarterly basis as well as pay the corresponding Non Resident Income Tax. 2-The purchased home is intended for personal use. Since it is not their main residence, it will be allocated a percentage of the cadastral value and the owner will pay the corresponding Non Resident Income Tax, in this case, annually. Regarding the deadline for submitting taxes, we need to be careful since it is different from
Additionally, we will have to pay the rubbish collection tax. These taxes are also paid to the City Council where our house is located. It is essential to be informed about this issue since owning a property in our country will entail fiscal responsibilities we must be prepared for. For this reason, if this affects to you it is important to be assisted by an experienced lawyer who can advise you. Marbellasolicitors Group counts on a team of knowledgeable lawyers who can help you in this and many other kinds of matters. Please, do not hesitate to contact us and make an appointment in any of our offices without any kind of commitment. See main advert opposite

Greek Mythology - Part 3 This month we look at some more of the creatures of Greek Mythology, starting with that one-eyed beast Cyclopes Cyclopes - The cyclopes were gigantic one-eyed monsters. The most famous is Polyphemus, the Cyclopes blinded by Odysseus. When Cronus came to power he imprisioned the Cyclopes in Tartarus. They were relesased by Zeus and fought with him against the Titans. As a reward for their release the Cyclopes gave Zeus his weapons of lighting and thunder. They continued as his workers at Mount Olympus forging his thunderbolts. Hecatoncheires - The word literally means, “hundred handed”. They were gigantic and had fifty heads and one hundred arms each of great strength. There were three of them, born to Gaea and Uranus. Their mutual
hatred of Uranus caused him to force the Hecatoncheires back into Gaea’s womb. They were able to hurl huge boulders as many as a hundred at a time against their opponents. Giants - These were generated from Uranus blood resulting from his castration by Cronus. They became powerful enough to try to unseat Zeus and the Olympians early in their rule. When the gods won they imprisioned the Giants in Tartarus. Typhoeus - A fire breathing dragon with a hundred heads that never rests. It was birthed by Gaea as a last effort to keep the Olympians from defeating her children the Titans. It came close to succeeding, setting most of the gods to flight and capturing Zeus. A-Z Of Spain Following on from The Sentinella’s journey through the alphabet to discover the joys of Spain. This month we take a look a what makes Spain ‘F’. Flamenco - This is the traditional dance of Spain and it is usually performed by beautiful women in flowing voluptuous frocks. And some men as well (but not in the frocks!). The origins of flamenco actually stem back to the kata khali dancing of India, but it was first brought to Spain by the gypsies. Throughout the years it has evolved greatly in response to growing trends. ‘Flamenco joven’ (young flamenco) is a popular version and it is far more upbeat than traditional flamenco. Flamenco became particularly popular from 1875 to 1900, but during the Franco years it was banned. There are three parts to flamenco - cante (the song), baile (the dance) and guitarra (no prizes for guessing!). The dancer performs with passion, inspiration and improvisation, which is really ‘felt’ by the audience. If the dancing is performed well it creates a totally moving experience.
Fiestas - Fiestas in Andalucia literally mean party time! More than 3,000 fiestas are celebrated every year in Andalucia alone, including fairs, carnivals, degustacions (food samplings), passion plays, pilgrimages and processions. Every town and village, no matter how small, holds at least one fiesta a year. A couple of years ago I made a trip to the New Year fiesta in Nerja and what a fab night it turned out to be. Silly hats, even sillier masks, drink, grapes at midnight, fireworks and a fab band. If you haven’t been before make it a must for this year, you’ve got a bit of a wait though! Fish - Whether you love it or hate it, practically everywhere you go in Spain you will see cafes and restaurants serving up platters of all kinds of fish. Many locals, especially in less developed regions still rely on the fishing trade to make a living and early in the morning fishermen can be seen on the sea trawling their nets to catch the day’s load. It can be rather tasty, prawn pil pil being my favourite, it’s just a shame fish pongs so much.

& t i Fru Facts a Veg apay P
Christopher Columbus, an Italian voyager, once referred to papayas as the fruit of the angels. The fruit — which is extremely rich in vitamin C — has a wide range of health benefits too, making it a great fruit option to include in your diet. Here are some of the top health benefits of papaya. Papaya is rich in fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants which prevent cholesterol build-up in your arteries. Too much cholesterol build-up can lead to several heart diseases including heart attacks and hypertension. Those looking to lose weight must include papaya in their diet as it is very low in calories. The fibre content in papaya leaves you feeling full and also clears your bowel movements, making your weight loss regime easier. Your immunity system acts as a shield against various infections that can make you really ill. A single papaya contains more than 200% of your daily requirement of vitamin C, making it great for your immune system. Papaya is an excellent food option for diabetics as it has a low sugar content, even though it is sweet to taste. Also, people who don’t have diabetes can eat papaya to prevent it from happening. Papaya is also rich in vitamin A, which helps protect your vision from deteriorating. Nobody wants to lose their ability to see due to diseases like age-related macular degeneration, and eating papayas will help to prevent this. Arthritis can be a really debilitating disease and people who have it may find their quality of life reduced significantly. Eating papayas is good for your bones as the fruit has anti-inflammatory properties which help keep various forms of arthritis at bay. In today’s times, it is almost impossible to
avoid eating foods that are bad for your digestive system. Often we find ourselves eating junk food or restaurant food prepared in excessive quantities of oil. Eating a papaya daily can make up for such occasional mistakes, as it has a digestive enzyme known as papain, along with fibre which helps improve your digestive health. Women who are experiencing menstrual pain should help themselves to several servings of papaya, as papain also helps in regulating and easing flow during menstrual periods. All of us would love to stay young forever, but no one in this world has managed to do it. Still, eating a papaya daily will prolong the process and may make you look years younger. Papaya is rich in vitamin C, vitamin E and antioxidants like beta-carotene which all help prevent your skin from free radical damage, keeping wrinkles and other signs of ageing at bay. The antioxidants, phytonutrients and flavonoids in papaya help prevent your cells from undergoing free radical damage, and some studies have also linked the consumption of papaya to a reduced risk of colon and prostate cancer.

School Days The following were answers provided by 6th graders during a History test. Watch the spelling! Some of the best humour is in the misspelling. 1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert. The climate of the Sarah is such that all the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.
2. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada 3. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth

One of the world's most famous and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith, is rightly regarded as a national treasure. In December 1934, she was born Margaret Natalie Smith in Essex. Her Scottish mother, Margaret (Hutton), worked as a secretary, and her English father, Nathaniel Smith, was a teacher at Oxford University. Educated at the High School for Girls in Oxford, she started out in the theatre as a prompt girl and understudy at the Oxford Repertory. She claims she never went on as no one ever fell ill. She made her stage debut with the Oxford University Dramatic Society as Viola in Shakespare's "Twelfth Night." She was spotted by an American theatrical impresario, and the part led to her being cast in her Broadway debut in "New Faces of 1956." She first appeared in films in 1956 as one of the party guests in Child in the House (1956), and has since performed in over 60 films and television series with some of the most prominent actors and actresses in the world. These include: Othello (1965) with Laurence Olivier; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969); California Suite (1978) with Michael Caine and Jane Fonda; A Room with a View (1985); Richard III (1995) with Ian McKellen and Jim Broadbent; Franco Zeffirelli's Tea with Mussolini (1999) with Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Cher and Gosford Park (2001) with Kristin Scott Thomas and Clive Owen. She has been nominated for an Oscar six times and won twice, for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite. More recently, Dame Maggie has appeared in the very successful 'Harry Potter' franchise as the formidable Professor McGonagall, in the
TV series Downton Abbey as the acerbic Dowager Countess of Grantham and in the 2015 film Lady in the Van. She is also a breast cancer survivor, having undergone surgery in 2008. Dame Maggie was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1970 Queen's New Year Honours List and the DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1990, both for her services to drama. She was then awarded the CH (Companion of Honour) in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours List. She was also created an honorary D.Litt of the universities of St Andrews and Cambridge in 1971 and 1995 respectively. Dame Maggie has been married twice: to actor Robert Stephens and to playwright Beverley Cross. Her marriage to Stephens ended in divorce in 1974, but she was married to Cross until his death in 1999. She had two sons with Stephens — Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens who are also actors — and has five grandchildren. She ranked tenth in the 2001 Orange Film Survey of greatest British film actresses. She has also won numerous awards for her stage work, including four Evening Standard ‘best actress’ titles and three Lawrence Oliver award nominations. In 2003, she became the 17th performer to win the Triple Crown of acting. Oscars: Best Actress, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and Best Supporting Actress, California Suite (1978), Tony: Best Actress Play, "Lettice and Lovage" (1990), and Emmy: Best Actress - Miniseries/Movie, My House in Umbria (2003). She was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in recognition of her outstanding contribution to film culture. Her guest appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2015 marked her first appearance on a TV talk show since she guested on Parkinson 42 years earlier.
To advertise call 664 210 468 or email sales@thesentinella.com Amy on tour The late singer Amy Winehouse is to ‘tour the world’ this year — in hologram form. The project will be run by Base Hologram, who have previously toured holograms of Roy Orbison and Maria Callas. The singer’s father, Mitch, has confirmed the virtual reality project, which will feature a live band and backing singers. He said he hopes it will help more people discover her music. He has now confirmed it will start towards the end of this year. Winehouse, known for hits including Rehab, Back To Black, Valerie and Tears Dry On Their Own, died in 2011 aged just 27, after a long-publicised battle with drink and drugs. Speaking at the Amy Winehouse Foundation's annual gala, Mitch said the family now felt ready "to bring Amy's incredible talent back to the spotlight, give her fans a chance to experience her music again and for new generations to continue to discover her". He said: "We experienced first-hand how these hologram shows celebrate great artistes. "This is a wonderful way to bring focus back to her musical legacy, as well as raising funds for the Amy Winehouse Foundation.” The Foundation works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. Other famous holograms to have performed on stage include Tupac and Michael Jackson.
Celebrity changes? Following the largest viewing figures for five years for I’m a Celebrity in December, fans are begging bosses to make huge changes to the show. They maintain one series a year is not enough, and are demanding two. This series marked the first that Holly Willoughby has co-hosted alongside Dec Donnelly, as Ant McPartlin took time off to focus on his sobriety. But that's not the only change that people want to see. Some viewers fancy a taste of the jungle for themselves and have pleaded for ITV bosses to make a “civilian” version of the show.

One-Liners Some classic funny one-liners from the King of Comedy, Mr Tommy Cooper... Two peanuts walk into a rather rough bar, not looking for any trouble. Unfortunately, one was a salted. A jump lead walks into a bar. The barman says, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.” A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says, “Sorry we don’t serve food in here.” A dyslexic man walks into a bra. A man walks into a bar with a roll of tarmac under his arm and says: “Pint please, and one for the road.” Two aerials meet on a roof, fall in love and get married. The ceremony was rubbish but the reception was brilliant.
Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: “Does this taste funny to you?” Man with a strawberry stuck up his bum goes to the doctor. The doctor says, “I’ll give you some cream to put on it.” My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. He was pulled in by a strong currant.

New Year New You... Whether the New Year has you feeling totally inspired or a tad overwhelmed, here is some advice to help you make – and keep – your healthy resolutions for 2019
reflect on what you’re grateful for. “A daily grateful check-in or keeping a grateful journal is a way to shift your focus and minimise the distorting influence of stress.
1. Practice mindful eating
4. Find 30 minutes a day to walk Getting the recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day can be as simple as taking a walk. If you’ve got a busy schedule, take three 10minute walks throughout your day. Make it fun! Grab a partner at work to get you through your lunch routine.
These days, it’s common to chow down with your eyes glued to a screen, but eating when you’re distracted leads to overeating. Take time to slow down and pay attention to your food. 2. Chill out and rest up When it’s time to sleep, it’s time to chill – literally. Darken your room by drawing the curtains or dimming the display on your alarm clock to really get those quality Zs. 3. Adopt an attitude of gratitude Take some time at the beginning or end of the day to
5. Take the stairs Making small, daily changes such as taking the stairs. 6. Commit to a 30-day fitness challenge Pick a fitness activity that’s easy and doesn’t require equipment, and commit to it for 30 days. There are many options to challenge yourself: practicing yoga, taking regular walks or joining a fitness class. As always, talk with your doctor before beginning your journey to a healthier you. Funny New Year Quotes New Year’s is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls and humbug resolutions. New Year’s Resolution: To tolerate fools more gladly, provided this does not encourage them to take up more of my time. My new year resolution? Buy more shoes, drink more wine, and don’t worry about the gym. I can do this. New Year’s Eve is finally here, where we can be drunk in public and no one minds. That’s why this is the best holiday. I can’t believe it’s been a year since I didn’t become a better person. Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of self assessment and repentance that demands personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces
humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle. Don’t set your expectations, resolutions and wishes too high for this year. Did it make a difference last time? Remember when we were young and wanted to stay up for New Year’s? Now we are old and all we want to do is sleep. I wish you can maintain your resolution to quit smoking a few days more this new year! May God inspire you to finally enroll in that anger management course in New Year! Happy New Year from someone comfortable expressing their love and appreciation for you in sms. May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions.

It Has Been A Long Road, And Here We Are!! As a small business Unspoilt Andalusia has been functioning since 2000. My Spanish husband and I started from the UK, flying out with customers to Malaga on individual personalised viewing trips We finally moved here in 2002, moving into an ancient, abandoned rural schoolhouse, now a B&B, Escuela La Crujia, in El Trapiche, that we have run since 2003. And from here we nurtured and developed our baby business to a successful and busy estate agency, run from our base at Escuela La Crujia. We have learned so much in the time we have been here, sometimes the hard way (which is the best way) and for my hubby, Imanol, and me, it feels like we have lived more in our time here than the whole of the rest of our lives (and we have been together since our teens!) I have also buckled down to get myself a Spanish qualification in real estate in Spain and we have built up a list of wonderful and trustworthy contacts, from builders, architects and lawyers, to surveyors,
painters, cleaners, gardeners, and many more. We are now proud to inform all our current friends, vendors and clients that as of around mid January, we will be opening a dedicated estate agency office in Trapiche, on the corner of the entrance to the Trops complex, along with a new employee. The kettle will be on the boil, ready for a cuppa, and maybe there will be the odd bottle of bubbly in the fridge, so you are all most welcome to pop in and see us! Wishing everyone we know, all our friends, clients, fellow agents and colleagues a very very Happy 2019. It has to be a good one for everyone!

I am 17 years old and I have fallen in love with a Spanish guy I met recently in Velez Malaga called Jose. But there are a few problems. Jose is 39 years old and he is married with two children. He says he loves me so much that he is prepared to leave his wife and kids to be with me. I have not dared to tell my mum about Jose as I am sure she will go mad. Now Jose has asked me to move away to Portugal with him. I want to but no one will understand. What should I do? Confused.com Penny says: “This Jose sounds like trouble from the word go. My advice may not be exactly what you want to hear at the moment, but I would say forget about Jose and find yourself a boyfriend of your own age, with whom you share similar interests. If Jose is cheating on his wife, who is to say he won’t do the same to you a few years down the line, when another young female takes his fancy? Get out now before it’s too late.

Champagne: Discovering Hiden Gems Champagne has been very much recognised as THE sparkling wine for celebrations, special occasions and events, for many, many years. Non-vintage champagne is very popular too, with numerous followers and devotees. Non-vintage is equally enjoyable, wonderful and respected.

The I Love Bubbly company is UK based and was created to discover splendid champagnes, that are not widely known. Founded during 1952, the Charles Collin Champagne Company produces a range, including award-wining champagnes, with grapes being selected carefully and harvested by hand, complying with strict guidelines. Champagne Charles Collin Cuvée Charles Brut (80% Chardonnay 20% Pinot Noir) I found superb, with the bouquet of citrus fruits being much appreciated by the nasal senses. The mouthfeel and palate sensations continue through, for this elegant production. Champagne Charles Collin Cuvée Charles Rosé Brut (80% Chardonnay 20% Pinot Noir) is a further excellent champagne from this company. Light fruits of the forest enhance an impressive bouquet and entice, splendidly, to the experience awaiting the mouth and palate. Again, the elegance is outstanding and the production is well-balanced. A particular pleasure also for al fresco dining,

White meats, poultry, cured meats, rich fish, shellfish and many other dishes pair perfectly with these well-balanced productions. Axarquia Sports Page TorreTorrox Golf Society played its monthly competition at Baviera Golf Club in December. The December game was the last game of 2018 for TorreTorrox Golf Society so this was the game which would sort out the three league tables which we run!! Baviera Golf is one of the few courses located near Malaga on the East side. It is situated below the Sierra de la Almijara and about three minutes from Torre Del Mar. The course is a flat and wide course with big fast greens which are kept in good condition all year round. The variety of holes and the unsurpassable views both to the Mediterranean sea and the mountains contribute to an enjoyable round of golf. The cost of playing at Baviera is unpredictable, to say the least, so always check the website before booking as quite often the staff are not up-to-date about what deals are on offer. The club house is run as a separate centre so if they have a function on then you will not be served however the small bar next to the driving range is usually open.
The overall winner for the entire 2018 season was Sir David Brooks of Torrox Pueblo, so well done David for taking the year and Division 1 award. Division 2 was won by Nigel Duffy and Division 3 was snatched by Mr Colin Bird. Well done to all of you. The competition venues for 2019 have nearly all been confirmed so please check the Facebook page for details and remember that you can join the society for only â‚Ź20 for the year. The next competition is on the 5th of January at Calanova Golf Club, so if you want to play, look us up on Facebook and make contact to get your name down. FB: TorreTorrox Golf Society

) : a h a Jokes h Thanks to MP for the following jokes... Pulled a gypsy bird last night. She asked me if I wanted to go back to hers for a good time! She wasn’t kidding... I went on the dodgems, waltzers and the ghost train. I even came home with a goldfish! ------------------------------------------------------------Elderly couple in church Wife turns round to husband and says “I’ve just done a silent fart, what should I do?” Husband says “Put new batteries in your hearing aid!” ------------------------------------------------------------What’s the difference between Iron Man and Iron Woman. One is a super hero and the other is a simple instruction. ------------------------------------------------------------A young man called Chris from London wanted to buy a Christmas present for his new girlfriend. They hadn't been seeing each other for very long and she lived in Scotland. Chris consulted with his sister and decided, after careful consideration, that a pair of good quality gloves would strike the right note... not too romantic and not too personal. Off he went with his sister to Harrods and they selected a dainty pair of fur lined quality leather gloves. His sister bought a pair of sexy knickers for herself at the same time. Harrods had a free gift wrap offer but the assistant mixed up the two items, the sister got the gloves and Chris unknowingly got the knickers. Good old Chris sent off his giftwrapped present in a parcel with the following letter. Dear Maggie, I chose these because I've noticed that you are not wearing any when we go out in the evenings. If it had not been for my sister I would have chosen the long ones with
buttons, but she wears shorter ones (which are easier to remove). These are a very delicate shade, but the lady I bought them from showed me the pair she had been wearing for the past three weeks and I hardly noticed any marks. I had her try yours on for me and she looked really smart in them even though they were a little bit tight on her. She also said that they rub against her ring which helps keep it clean. In fact she hasn't needed to wash it since she began wearing them. I wish I was there to put them on for you the first time, as no doubt many other hands will touch them before I have a chance to see you again. When you take them off remember to blow into them a little bit because they will be naturally a little damp from wearing. Just imagine how many times my lips will kiss them during the coming year. I hope you will wear them for me on our next date. All my love, Chris P.S. My mum tells me that the latest style is to wear them folded down with a little bit of fur showing ------------------------------------------------------------Irish animal rights protesters broke into a Turkey farm outside Dublin last night, they escaped with 5,000 Turkeys. A spokesman for the gang said, "We will be releasing the birds back into the wild, just as soon as they have been defrosted." ------------------------------------------------------------The wife said she wants a Philips 42 inch for Christmas. Where the hell am I going to get a screwdriver that big? ------------------------------------------------------------Farted in post office after a beef madras... Jokes h a ha :) After being sacked by Manchester United, Jose Mourinho just wanted to get as far away from the Manchester United training ground as quick as possible. Ironically someone had parked a bus right across the exit. ------------------------------------------------------------One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the road-side eating grass. Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass.." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said. "But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree.." "Bring them along," the lawyer replied. Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us, also." The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!" "Bring them all, as well," the lawyer answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind, thank you for taking all of us with you." The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it.You'll really love my place. The grass is almost a foot high"! ---------------------------------------------------A man is driving down a deserted country highway when he notices a sign out of the corner of his eye......It reads: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution 10kms. He thinks this is a figment of his imagination and drives on without second thought. Soon he sees another sign which reads: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution 5kms.
Suddenly he begins to realise that these signs are for real when driving past a third sign saying: Sisters of St. Francis house of prostitution next right. His curiosity gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive. On the far side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the door reading: Sisters of St. Francis. He climbs the steps and rings the bell. The door is answered by a nun in a long black habit who asks, 'What may we do for you my son?' He answers, 'I saw your signs along the highway and was interested in possibly doing business....' 'Very well my son. Please follow me.' He is led through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented. The nun stops, 'Please knock on this door.' He does so and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup answers the door... This nun instructs, 'Please place 100â‚Ź in the cup then go through the large wooden door at the end of the hallway...' He puts 100â‚Ź in the cup, eagerly trots down the hall and slips through the door which closes behind him. The door locks and he finds himself in the parking lot facing another sign... Go in peace you have just been screwed by the sisters of St. Francis. Serves you right you sinner! ---------------------------------------------------A woman was helping her husband set up his computer. At the appropriate point in the process, she told him that he would now have to enter a password. The husband was in a rather amorous mood and figured he would try for the shock effect to bring this to his wife's attention. So, when the computer asked him to enter his password, He made it plainly obvious to his wife that he was keying in... P............E...........N...........I...........S......... His wife fell off her chair laughing when the computer replied: PASSWORD DENIED NOT LONG ENOUGH.
