Strange News Sword swallower breaks record An Australian performance artist has set a new world record by swallowing 18 swords at the same time. Chayne Hultgren, also known as the Space Cowboy, beat his 2008 record by swallowing the swords, each 28.35” long, at an event in Sydney. The swords were bound together with a steel clasp. He said that while the stunt was not dangerous, he had spent many hours training for it. After setting the new Guinness World Record Mr Hultgren, 31, described it as one of his greatest achievements so far. Cat owners 'cleverer' than dog owners Cat owners are more likely to have university degrees than people who have dogs, according to a new scientific survey of pet ownership. Researchers at the University of Bristol say the superior intelligence of cat owners is unlikely to be caused by their exposure to their pets. Rather, more educated people tend to work longer hours and choose a pet to fit their lifestyles. Unlike dogs, cats require no walking and can manage with little human company. Homes with degree-holders were 1.36 times more likely to have a cat than other households. The same homes were less likely to have a dog than households where no-one went to university. Finders weepers Two Chinese men who found a horde of priceless antiques in an ancient tomb did not realise their value and sold them for pennies. One of the artworks was a pottery figure of a woman worth nearly £100,000 which they sold for the equivalent of 28p. Feng and Zheng of Guying Town, Henan Province found the tomb while hunting hares in a field near their homes. They dug out more than 20 antiques from the tomb and sold them to a collector for just over £1,000 altogether. The pair were shocked to later discover that the tomb they had found dated back to the 1,000-year-old Sui Tang Dynasty.

Random Joke How to call the police when you´re old and don´t move fast anymore. George Hewitson, an elderly man, from Norwich UK, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me. Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."

George said, "Okay." He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them." and he hung up. Within five minutes, Six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Hewitson`s' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" "I thought you said there was nobody available!" replied George. Don't mess with old people!

De Cotta By Myles Jackson, a Barrister-at-Law De Cotta McKenna & Santafé International child abduction' is when a parent takes his under-age child ('Jonny'), from his habitual residence to another country without the other parent's consent or Court's permission. Indeed, failing to return Jonny home after an agreed holiday or period abroad also constitutes international child abduction. Quite often, 'abducting' parents are unaware they have committed a crime. Often the abductor is the primary carer who can no longer abide the other parent's behaviour, can no longer subsist financially or simply misses family support back home. Accordingly, if living in Spain and thinking of heading off with Jonny, you must obtain the other parent's written consent or the court's permission. Likewise, where the other parent decamps with Jonny without your consent, report it to the authorities and apply to court for Jonny's immediate return. The court’s primary interest is Jonny's prompt and safe return to his habitual residence. The court’s singular interest is to determine whether permission to remove existed or not. This rationale is to dissuade parents from resorting to titfor-tat secondary abduction. To avoid 'abducting' Jonny yourself, you should agree terms with the other parent. Such agreement can be sworn before a notary or be ratified by a judge. The agreement will confirm both parents' agreement to Jonny going to live in another country as well as who has primary custody of Jonny, when he is to stay with mum, when he is to stay with dad, where he is to stay at Christmas and Easter and other holidays etc.. Where one parent suspects that the other is about to abduct Jonny, they can take preventative measures such as ensuring his passport is safe, notifying the Passport office not to issue a 'replacement' passport

and informing the police, family doctor and school of their concerns. I also advise you to prepare an 'information pack' ready for presentation to the police when abduction occurs. The pack should contain recent colour digital photos of Jonny and abducting parent, physical descriptions, colour of hair, eyes, height, weight, frame, distinguishing scars etc., as well as your lawyer's full contact details. Virtual Farming Firstly, for those of you who use the Unicaja bank in Benamargosa and have not yet heard, I am very sorry to inform you that Manolo died suddenly of a heart attack last month, aged just 49. He has been a great help to many locals and foreigners alike, so after 26 years he will be sadly missed. As is the Spanish custom, he was buried the following day in Malaga City, where he lived. His wife has given me permission to pass out their address as I am sure there are many of you who would like to send your condolences. It is on the counter in La Vaqueria. She understands English and will be pleased to receive your cards. Having not made a new year’s resolution I resolve monthly. This month’s is to be kinder and more helpful to people with bad backs. And the reason being? My back is killing me! I have to admit to always having considered it as an excuse, an ailment of skivers and shirkers, on a par with man flu, and due about as much sympathy! Not anymore! My lifting days may well be over so actual physical help could be a problem; however I can now empathise with fellow sufferers and promise to be a more thoughtful listener. Such has been the extent of my pain that I’ve had to ditch the previous two drafts for this month’s article as they read like suicide notes! Although I may well be hospitalised at the time of reading La Vaqueria continues as normal. The next Curry Night is on Thurs 11th March with lots of authentically prepared food for just 8,35€. Having grown up in rural Hampshire, in a small farming community, I always knew that I wanted to be a farmer. “Not for girls,” they said. “Girls may only marry into it.” so La Vaqueria is the closest I’ve ever come to realising that dream; until now that is. I have an enormous farm with no flies and no manure. The only problem is, every time I look at a real lemon or orange tree I don’t want to paint it. Instead I have an irresistible urge to click on it! For those who have not yet come across Farmville, don’t worry, it is a daft but fun game on the internet; a bit of good clean fun, rather like playing cards in the old days!) More next month!

It is a rich bean stew made with large white beans, pork, bacon, black pudding and often saffron. It is a heavy dish and because of that it’s usually eaten for lunch, the main meal of the day. Fajitas de Pollo – These are a Mexican speciality, consisting of grilled meat, onions and bell peppers served on a flour or corn tortilla. They are delicious served

with spicy tomato sauce and guacamole. Fondue - This is a Swiss communal dish shared at the table in a large pot over a small burner. The term is derived from the French verb fondre (to melt). Diners use forks to dip bits of food (most often bread) into the warm semi-liquid sauce (commonly a cheese mix). While cheese fondue is the most widely known, there are other pot and dipping ingredients, such as chocolate and strawberries (my fave!) Filetes – Boneless portions of meat. The Ribhouse One cold and wet Sunday morning... ...I had no food in the house and obviously being in Spain, hardly any shops open, I realised that I had nothing for dinner. “Ah well no loss” I thought, I am going to call the Ribhouse in Torrox Costa to see if they could fit us in. Great, they could and I knew then that I had to skip breakfast, as you certainly get a great fill at the Ribhouse. When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by Thomas, the owner, who showed us to our seats. The dining experience is different here as you eat in what I can only describe as a large conservatory, which was bright and airy even though it was cold and wet outside. For starters there was 'soup of the day', always home made by the lovely Kirsty, Tom's wife. On this occasion, it was Cream of Vegetable and it came out in a large tureen so you could help yourself, it was delicious! For mains there is always a choice of

As always, it's bought out in dishes and you help yourself. Copious amounts of meat, 3 or 4 vegetables, Yorkshire puddings, gravy boats and roast potatoes. Also you are informed that if you require more vegetables just ask. “No chance” I thought, “There is enough here to feed 6”! The meat was superb really tender and juicy and accompanied by all the traditional niceties it was a fantastic feed. Thomas gave us ample time to digest the delicious food, before asking if we wanted dessert. Even though I was full to bursting, when he reeled off 4 tantalising home made desserts I had to have a go. Foundation Angel Love A Child Foundation The Love a Child Foundation (LACF) is a non-profit organisation set up in 2002 to support children who are abandoned, abused, exploited, refugee or orphaned. Originally helping Tibetan refugee children living in Northern India, LACF has now expanded to include children in Burma (Myanmar) and Ecuador. The main aim of the charity is to find ‘sponsor parents’ for its children; providing them with food, clothing, education and care - as well as the comfort in knowing that someone cares. Public donations are welcomed - these are used for infrastructure projects such as the building of school rooms, dormitories, toilets and washing blocks; as well as for providing necessary medical and school equipment. Thanks to a pioneering scheme, the running costs of the organization will soon be funded by private donors (‘Foundation Angels’), allowing 100% of sponsorship and public donations to reach the children. LACF is about to launch a major awareness raising campaign, and is looking for offers of help or assistance. Restaruant Review Oriental food has always been one of my favourites, but apart from tonnes of Chinese restaurants, there has never been much in the way of Oriental cuisine in the axarquia region. so imagine my delight when the Dong Xing wok Buffet opened its doors in El ingenio shopping centre, Velez Malaga…! Along with Chinese, they also serve Japanese, Thai, etc…And what’s even better is the fact that it’s a huge buffet, so you can help yourself as many times as you want! The first time I went my eyes nearly popped out of my head as they kept landing on different morsels. There are a range of starters, including crab claws, spring rolls, Chinese bread, prawn toast, chicken, beef, noodles, rice, etc… The main course is typically a wok. You collect the ingredients you want on a plate, take them to the chefs and state the sauce you would like, then watch as the flames whoosh up and your dinner is cooked in front of you. You can then add a side serving of rice, noodles, or whatever else takes your fancy. Woks are great for the health, and they sure beat the fast food available in so many eateries these days. You can also choose from a range of sushi rolls. There are always at least five or six choices of dessert, including ice cream, yoghurts, fruit, cheesecake, flan and cakes. That’s if you can fit any in after all the yummy starters and mains! Since it opened, I’ve eaten in Dong xing Wok at least five times and I know there are plenty more times to come… The price is a snip at just 10.25€ if you go for lunch, between 12:30-4:30 and 12.25€ if you go for dinner, between 7:30-12:00. Children eat for 3€ if under 4 and 6€ if 4-7 yearsold. See main advert opposite

Restaurante Cantueso Beating the Winter Blues! It might seem something of a contradiction for a restaurant to offer a crisis menu and then a gastronomic tasting menu of five or seven courses. However that is just what Restaurante Cantueso in Periana has done and it has proved just as popular as the 7€ special. Nicky Scott, the owner, told The Sentinella: “It’s by no means a sign that the economic crisis is behind us, but there are times when people wish to rid themselves of the winter blues and push the boat out for a special occasion. Plus, five courses for just 19€ is extremely good value!” Nicky and her Spanish chef, Carmen Muñoz, are making quite a name for themselves tucked away above Lake Viñuela. As their advert says, it really is "A view to match the food." Quite a claim when you look at the view, but the proof they say is in the eating, and the tasting menu is designed to show off Carmen's culinary skills from starters through to desserts.

This is Nicky's fourth year at Cantueso. “At first it was difficult to convince both locals and expats that it really is a Spanish restaurant,” she said. “However the increasing number of visitors seems to indicate that they have finally got the message. There are no all-day English breakfasts here!” The restaurant puts a great deal of time and effort into its website, updating menus and prices, together with photos and news. There is also a webcam showing live pictures from the terrace, which overlooks the lake. This achieves an amazing number of visits, often exceeding 2,000 hits each week. Mind, Body, Spirit As promised last month, welcome to a new monthly feature in The Sentinella – the Mind Body Spirit section. In the months ahead we will be including articles about psychics, mediums, channelling, astral projecting, personal development, manifesting and similar topics of which many of you are greatly interested in. These themes aren’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but remember that we try to cater for as many tastes as possible in our little mag and not everyone is going to like everything. So let’s start by taking a look at something called Cellular Clearing. I discovered this at the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Marbella last summer, where I met Richard Waterborn, a trained healer. He believes that any illness of the body or mind can be healed via his Cellular Clear-

ing sessions. My curiousness got the better of me, so I booked a few sessions, to see what it was all about. I do not have any scary diseases or illnesses, but I was recently diagnosed with a slightly under active thyroid gland, so that was it all took for me to pick up the phone! Richard described that all disease starts in the cellular memory as a means of ‘disease’ caused by negative thought patterns and traumatic experiences from childhood or beyond, which remain un-integrated. As from 15th Jan the P3 free parking has ceased at the airport - although if you want to take a chance you can park on the road next to the undercover parking (which is now used soley for employees of the airport) and is patrolled by security. Although, you can imagine this will be taking a chance as the amount of parking places has been greatly reduced. If you do decide to take this option be aware that the free airport shuttle bus has now been withdrawn - therefore you will have to walk to and from your car when using departures and arrivals - unless of course on your return journey before picking up your car, you decide to take a cab to retrieve it, it will cost you a minimum fare of 19 euros. In the past I was a HGV/Bus mechanic so have been used to repairing things. Coming to live here in Spain twelve years ago I soon found out that I had to be a jack of all trades. ´No problemo´, I have the tools so get on with it. Plumbing, install and solder new pipes etc. great. Install a sink unit, major problems created by me. I have always, when necessary, used local labour. I called a plumber, he looked, ´no es posible! Vamos a Velez´. I looked in The Sentinella and saw the john Folland´s advert, gave him a bell on the friday and he said he would be out Monday and that the distance was no problem. Not knowing exactly where the house was in Iznate, he arrived 17 minutes late, big deal!. He looked at the problems and after a few trips up and down to his vehicle (the house

is at the top of a flight steps) and never having to visit our ferreteria a few yards away, he had completed a very difficult repair and stopped a leak in the bathroom, (i had tried many times) all with what he carried with him. I thought, what with the distance and continual up and down the steps, I was going to have to take out a mortgage. He told me the price and I could not believe it because he really got me out of trouble and I was happy to give a little more. I can really and truthfully recommend John Folland for any plumbing work, He is a very cheerful and jolly person even when working, not often found these days. Funny Pic :) Paul had just bought a new boat and decided to take her for the maiden voyage. This was his first boat and he wasn't quite sure of the exact Standard Operating Procedures for launching it off a ramp, but figured it couldn't be too hard. He consulted his local boat dealer for advice, but they just said "don't let the trailer get too deep when you are trying to launch the boat". Well, he didn't know what they meant by that as he could barely get the trailer in the water at all!
