This month it’s another mothering based editorial, as this is something I feel passionate about and want to share with readers… the topic is breastfeeding! My journey as a new and first-time breastfeeding mother was challenging to say the least. I went through intense pain, soreness, bleeding, milk blisters, blockages, mastisis.. you name it... I've had it!!! And yet, I persevered, encouraged wholeheartedly by my husband (admittedly I felt like I could throttle him at times - lol), giving our baby son all the nutrients and vitamins he needs for the very best start in life. And feeding in public did not come easily for me either. After Ty was about three months old I ventured to a café for the first time with a couple of other breastfeeding mothers and struggled awkwardly behind a clumsy cover. Since then, I've progressed somewhat and now I feed Ty whenever and wherever he needs it - whenever he is hungry or simply needs a little comforting. Living in Ojai makes this easy thankfully, as there are no frowning faces looking on in horror - only kindness, compassion, love, and happiness for what is a natural act of giving and selfless service between mother and baby. However, I’m aware that some mothers aren’t so fortunate and, especially in the UK I’ve heard, they are often met with looks of disgust when they are simply feeding their hungry baby. This is something that enrages me inside and as a friend pointed out: Breastfeeding is frowned upon by some humans because said humans "sexualize" breasts...and that just says a lot about your perspectives. A baby feeding is a baby that is feeding, stop being horrified and making taboos about a blob of fat attached with a nipple that is going straight in a baby's mouth. This made me smile as it’s the Truth and the Truth is often kinda funny!

Strange News Although my breastfeeding journey started out painfully, I am so glad I continued as for me it now represents the unconditional love and joy and bliss and pure heaven that exists between Baby Ty and I. I also do feel that is too much pressure on mum’s to breastfeed when it may not be the best approach for them, however that’s a rant for another editorial! Bottom line, it’s about time society stops stop judging and frowning upon breastfeeding mothers who are only using their breasts in the natural way God intended – to FEED their babies…

Pie alert A pensioner caused a security alert at Manchester Airport recently because of his ‘particularly juicy’ pork pie. Norman Pearson took the moist savoury snack through security after picking it up from Wigan Central the night before he flew to Spain. But he was stopped by airport security because they were alerted to liquid in his luggage. They were surprised to discover that it was because of his pork pie. His brother, Roy, said: ‘Norman and pork pies are regular travelling companions but it’s the first time that it has caused an issue with airport security. ‘It certainly tickled me because he’s so precise. He doesn’t even wear a belt so he can get through security fast. He’s mortified if he gets held up so he’d be very surprised to be held up by a pie. ‘The people in security said they have never seen that before. It must have been a very juicy pie.’ Roy added: ‘Seeing the funny side of it and not being able to extract the juice from the pie and place into a plastic bag, airport security allowed both Norman and his pie to continue on their way and wished him “bon appetit”.’

Lottery luck A man in New Zealand has won $1m on the Lottery after allowing a rude customer to cut into the queue in front of him. The lucky man was queueing at a shop in Tauranga when a customer barged in front of him and bought a Lucky Dip ticket. But instead of complaining, he just waited a bit longer to buy his Lucky Dip. All his numbers came up and he now intends to buy a new house.

Fireworks Most people like fireworks as they are so mesmerizing. Here are some firework facts The earliest documentation of fireworks dates back to 7th century China. They were invented more than 2000 years ago in China. China is the largest manufacturer and exporter of fireworks in the world. 90% of all fireworks originate from here. In 1240 the Arabs acquired knowledge of gunpowder. A Syrian named Hasan al-Rammah wrote of fireworks using terms that suggested he derived his knowledge from Chinese sources. The first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. Dreaming about fireworks means that you like to be the centre of attention and are showing off to others. It also symbolizes enthusiasm and exhilaration.

The fireworks were used to accompany many festivities, scare off evil spirits and promote prosperity. The biggest occasion for fireworks in the UK is Guy Fawkes Night (5th November). It is a celebration of the failing of the Gunpowder Plot on 5 November 1605, an attempt to kill King James I at the Houses of Parliament. The largest firework rocket is 13kg and was produced and launched in Portugal in 2010. Half of all firework injuries are to children under the age of 16.

The Seven Ages of Mum The bringing up of a child... Pregnancy - Nine months of being told horror stories by other mums about giving birth and having the life scared out of you. Having the baby - You thought all those horror stories were exaggerated, and then you go into labour and you find out they were in fact true! Bringing up baby - An endless cycle of attention seeking and grumpy behaviour, followed by bottle and sleep - you should have had plenty of practive with your husband. Bringing up the toddler - You’ve heard of the terrible twos, but they never tell you about the tortuous threes, the flipping fours and the frazzled fives, let alone the sodding sixes and the stinking sevens, do they?! Bringing up the child - You think you are going to hae a quiet life while they are at school, but then it’s preparing lunchboxes, going to sports days, nativity plays, the PTA, meeting with teachers, dropping off, picking up,

school trips - when you are going to get your well-earned rest? Bringing up the teenager - Mood swings, door slamming, furtive behaviour, drunkeness - it’s dad all over again isn’t it?! They fly the coop - Ah, despite everything, you’re missing them already, aren’t you?!

At The Doctors Funny things that happens at the quacks... “Here,” says the nurse, handing the patient a urine specimen container. “The bathroom’s over there.” A few minutes later, the patient comes out of the bathroom. “Thanks,” he says, returning the empty container. “But there was
a toilet in there, so I didn’t need this after all.” As I leaned in to check her eyes, my older patient got a little frisky. “You remind me of my third husband,” she said coyly. “Third husband?” I asked. “How many have you had?” My patient announced she had good news … and bad. “The medicine for my earache worked,” she said. “What’s the bad news?” I asked. “It tasted awful.” Since she was feeling better, I didn’t have the heart to tell her they’re called eardrops for a reason.

Patient: Doctor, I slipped in the grocery store and really hurt myself. Me: Where did you get hurt? Patient: Aisle six. I prescribed an inhaler for a patient’s cat allergy. He came back a week later saying he was none the better. Turns out, he was spraying the inhaler on the cat. Scene: The operating room. I’m
reviewing the surgical checklist with the nurses. Me: We have the surgical equipment, the heart-lung machine, antibiotics, and the replacement heart valve on hand. Patient: You wait until now to figure this stuff out? I gave my patient the results of her sleep study: “It looks like you stopped breathing in your sleep over 65 times per hour.” Her response: “Did I start back?”

Fantastic Obituary Thursday, 7 April 2016, 1:33pm. Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their

unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense suffered further as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, I'm A Victim, and Pay Me For Doing Nothing. Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him, share with someone. If not, join the majority and do nothing!

Props and Vintage Props and Vintage is the appropriate name of a shop recently opened in the village of Los Ventorros close to the picturesque hilltop town of Comares The shop contains a fascinating collection of props and vintage items accumulated by Jim Grindley during his years as props master to the TV and film industry. In his diverse career Jim has worked on many productions of Agatha Christie novels such as Poirot, Miss Marple and the Orient Express. More recently he has managed props for the production of Le Carre’s The Night Manager and the T.V production of the Sound of Music. So you can imagine that the shop is an emporium of interesting artefacts. Items are available for sale or to rent and include an enormous range from vintage hats, shoes, handbags and shawls through to exotic carpets, vintage luggage and furniture. Undoubtedly it is the place to find a uniquely authentic gift costing just a few euros for some items through to the very exotic - such as a Chinese opium bed! Who else is going to have a mirror used by Poirot or a

trunk from the Orient Express? The shop is on the main street in Los Ventorros, a small village inland from Torre del Mar and on the old road from Malaga to Comares. After, a picturesque drive through the mountains Comares and Los Ventorros are well worth visiting for their spectacular views, ancient Moorish history and interesting walks. Ventorros is situated below the hill of Masmullar, a protected site of archaeological interest. ‘Props and Vintage’ is adjacent to El Duende which sells an eclectic mix of items including pottery, lamps and Moroccan items. To complete the trip both Comares and Los Ventorros have an excellent range of bars and restaurants for meals, drinks and Tapas, so why not take a trip to the mountains and go back in time. The shop is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12pm - 5pm. Doctor’s Disasters A few true stories from the medics..... 1. A man comes into the ER and yells, "My wife's going to have her baby in the cab!" I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the he lady's dress, and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs - and I was in the wrong one. Dr. Mark MacDonald, San Antonio, Texas 2. At the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient's anterior chest wall. "Big breaths," I instructed. "Yes, they used to be," replied the patient. Dr. Richard Byrnes, Seattle , Washington 3. One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a "massive internal fart." Dr. Susan Steinberg 4. During a patient's two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed

me, his doctor, that he was having trouble with one of his medications. "Which one?" I asked. "The patch, the nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I'm running out of places to put it!" I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn't see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Now, the instructions include removal of the old patch before applying a new one. Dr. Rebecca St. Clair, Norfolk 5. While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, "How long have you been bedridden?" After a look of complete confusion she answered... "Why, not for about twenty years - when my husband was alive." Dr. Steven Swanson 6. I was caring for a woman and asked, "So how's your breakfast this morning?" "It's very good, except for the Kentucky Jelly. I can't seem to get used to the taste" the patient replied. I then asked to see the jelly and the woman produced a foil packet labeled "KY Jelly." Dr. Leonard Kransdorf, Detroit, Miami

Random Joke :) I went to the pub last night and saw a BIG woman dancing on a table. I said, “Good legs.” The girl giggled and said, “Do you really think so?” I said, “Definitely! Most tables would have collapsed by now.” Cost me 6 stitches, but… When you’re over seventy…………… who cares?

Linea Directa OEM PARTS EXCLUSIVELY USED IN NATIONAL REPAIR NETWORK OEM PARTS OEM parts are Original Equipment Manufactured parts as made by your car’s manufacturer. They are brand new, usually more expensive and sometimes take longer to order. But they are a no brainer. Body shops love them because they fit perfectly and install easy. LÍNEA DIRECTA ONLY USES OEM PARTS Línea Directa is the only insurance company that guarantees the use of OEM parts in their repairer network. Thanks to an exclusive purchasing and distribution agreement with the major manufacturers, when you repair your vehicle through its exclusive network of body shops and repairers, they guarantee the use of OEM parts. After vehicle repairs are complete, they send a list of the OEM parts used for you to keep in your log book. It’s one less thing to worry about. DO ALL INSURANCE COMPANIES USE OEM PARTS? At the time of publishing this article, no other insurance company in Spain guarantees the exclusive use of OEM parts in their repairer network. Some insurance companies rely on after market parts and used parts to keep the repair costs to a minimum, only paying for

OEM parts if no other parts are available. After-market parts are parts made by a company other than your vehicle’s manufacturer. They are new and the spec should be very close to the original specs. However, some minor fitting adjustments maybe required by the body shop. Used parts come from the scrap yard. Cars involved in accidents, engine trouble or age, means that scrapped cars will have some working parts, which can be resold. The used parts are usually OEM parts. NATIONAL NETWORK OF BODY SHOP REPAIRERS Using the Línea Directa network to repair your car means more than just OEM parts. The whole repair service is handled from start to finish. Your vehicle is collected at the agreed time and place. The repairs are carried out swiftly, efficiently and according to original manufacturer specs. You can request a replacement vehicle for the duration of the repair. They will keep you updated on progress and after completion; your vehicle will be delivered at the agreed time and place. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 165 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

Give Me Five! To Support Animal Protection In years gone by, visitors to Spain were dismayed to see abandoned boxes of kittens by rubbish bins, donkeys and horses chained to stakes without shade or water, and dogs wandering around with open wounds These abuses still occur, but thanks to a small army of volunteers from several animal charities, many of the victims are now rescued. Along the coast and throughout the Axarquía, thousands of dogs, cats, horses and other creatures are annually rescued, rehabilitated and in most cases re-homed. Now, a dental practice in Maro has stepped in to help raise the cash which these groups desperately need to continue their work with the launch of ¡Give Me Five! Not only that, DentaDanés is actively working with other businesses so that animal supporters can save money while raising funds. ¡Give Me Five! members get a five per cent discount on all dental treatment at DentaDanés, as well as five per cent discount on all transac-

tions with other business partners who are associated with the scheme. Each member pays €50 for six months in ¡Give Me Five! with the membership fees distributed to the various animal related charities in our area. Businesses which participate do so at no cost, and simply have to guarantee that they will offer the five per cent discount to any ¡Give Me Five! member who produces a valid membership card. In addition, each business partner gets a free advertisement in the quarterly discount booklet which is distributed to members. So, members save money, businesses get free advertising and, most importantly, all of the membership fees are distributed to those unsung heroes of the local animal rescue groups who all deserve our support for their difficult but inspiring work. Driving In Spain - Don’t Be Caught Out! Driving in most parts of Spain is generally a nice experience. The roads are pretty good, there’s not too much traffic and petrol is cheaper than in other European countries Sometimes it is very easy to forget about what we’re doing when we are driving in this country, especially if we are out with friends having fun. The sun is nearly always shining, but it’s important to stay focused. The driver must always be aware of his actions and remember that he is in charge of not only the safety of himself and his passengers, but also of those on the roads around him. And, the DGT has put together a mountain of rules and regulations to make sure that driving around the roads and motorways in Spain is a safe experience for everyone. Of course, there are rules that everyone already knows not to do, like drive through a red light or drive without wearing a seat belt, but there are also some that are so unbelievable that it is very easy to fall foul of the law and find yourself with a fine without even realising that you’ve done something wrong. Insurance agency Wiquot.com has put together the following list of the strangest things that drivers have been fined for, which all appear in the Reglamento General de Circulación (General Traffic Law). Driving with one hand or arm outside of the vehicle can lead to a fine of 100€. Article 18 of the General Traffic Law states that the driver and passengers should always maintain a sensible position inside the vehicle. Driving without wearing a T-shirt or shirt, barefoot or wearing flip-flops comes with a fine of 200€ for not driving with the correct clothing or footwear, which could diminish the driver’s capacity to control the vehicle. You have to be extremely careful when parking on sand at the beach because if the area is classified as ‘protected’, you could end up with a fine of up to 6,000€.

Making the most of being stationary at a red light to touch up your make-up or eat something could cost you 200€ and two points off your license. Driving with the music blasting out in an area where quiet is required, like a hospital, or during the early hours of the morning will be sanctioned with a fine of 80-100€. You should only use the car horn in cases of emergency, to avoid an accident or if you want to overtake someone and alert them of your action. Any other use could lead to an 80€ fine. Driving in the left-hand lane or in the middle lane if the right-hand lane is free could result in a fine of 200€, according to Articles 28 and 31. Be careful if you’re having an argument whilst driving, as if you’re seen taking your eye off the road on several occasions, you could end up with a fine of 80€. The same amount will be applied if the driver is caught biting his nails, kissing the co-pilot or insulting other drivers using hand signals! Both hands should be kept on the steering wheel whilst driving and the driver’s ears should be visible. Filling up the car with petrol with the radio on comes with a fine of up to 91€!.

Since ancient times, anise has been used as a spice and flavouring agent for food stuffs and beverages. It is also employed to flavour liquors. In India and certain other countries, anise is also used as a mouth freshener and digestive agent. The medicinal properties of this herb were known long ago in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The essential oil of anise is extracted by steam distillation of dried fruits of anise, or Pimpinella Anisum, which yields a thin and clear oil of which Anethol is the prime constituent, consisting of about 90 percent of it. Anti-epileptic & Anti-hysteric: Anise essential oil can calm down epileptic and hysteric attacks by slowing down circulation, respiration and nervous response, if administered in higher dosages. Carminative: Anise essential oil promotes the

removal of gases and as a digestive, it does not let it form, as indigestion is the cause of excess gas. Cordial: Helps counter colds, the deposition of phlegm, and problems such as rheumatism and arthritis. Decongestant: Anise is very effective in clearing congestion in the lungs and the respiratory tracts for conditions like asthma and bronchitis. Insecticide: The essential oil of anise is toxic to insects and smaller animals, therefore its smell keeps insects away. Sedative: Used as a sedative for anxiety, nervous afflictions, depression, anger, and stress as well as for symptoms such as insomnia due to its tranquilising and relaxing effects. A Few Words of Caution: In heavy doses, it has narcotic effects and slows down respiration and circulation. It is poisonous to certain small animals and birds and therefore children should not be given high doses. Furthermore, it may cause irritation to certain skin types. It is best to avoid it during pregnancy. It may also aggravate certain types of cancers caused due to its effect on the estrogen hormone.

World’s Creepiest Village World's creepiest village home to hundreds of eerie statues watching every move visitors make

ture. I felt like I’d accidentally stumbled into some forbidden area. Amazing," says photographer Ken Ohki

Creepy statues lined up and watching visitors unblinkingly might be enough to spook anyone - but a photographer was brave enough to stay and snap some atmospheric shots. Like the eerie angels in Doctor Who's scary Blink episode, the crowd looks like it may just move if you take your eyes off it.

The village's founder, Mutsuo Furukawa, wanted to keep these statues with him for all eternity when he paid a reported 6 billion yen - around £44 million - to a Chinese sculptor in 1989.

The incredible sight of hundreds of stone sculptures is actually in a real village near Osawano, Japan. Known as Fureai Sekibutsu no Sato, its name literally means 'the village where you can meet Buddhist statues'. There are more than 800 of the staring effigies - some of Buddhist deities and others of those familiar to the park's founder. “I found this incredible place in Toyama Prefec-

Mr. Ohki said afterwards that he left the area in a hurry, having been a little put off by the unseeing eyes upon him. "I felt like I'd been to another of the world," he wrote. One woman says: "I think it's cool, not creepy." Another adds: "They look realistic... Almost as if someone was turning people into stone."

Helping Axarquia News these properties should be regularised under the new regulations.

NEW LAW REGULARISING HOUSES A new law came into force in July, regularising houses built in the campo (countryside). Most of these houses in the Axarquía area were built on land called SUELO NO URBANIZABLE O RÚSTICO, where building was not permitted. The new law facilitates the regularisation of completed dwellings on ‘parcelaciones urbanisticas’, meaning where there is more than one building on the same plot. The new legislation constitutes neither an amnesty nor a full legalisation of the properties affected, however, but it prevents the building from being demolished. If you have a property built on rustic land and other houses have been built on this plot too, whether there are separate boundaries or not,

The requirements are: 1) The house must be totally finished, including pools, garages, etc, and must be over six years old. 2) The house must not be in a conservation area, or one liable to flooding. 3) The house must not be the subject of administration in the Town Hall or with the Junta, or be linked to any criminal action. This new law permits property owners to access basic services such as electricity and water, register the property in the land registry office and enjoy the benefits of judicial security. In future all such regularised properties will be easier to sell. For more information, please write to info@helpingaxarquia.com The information provided in this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues.

Macaulay Carson Culkin became famous as a child actor for his role as Kevin McCallister in the family comedy Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Culkin, who was born in 1980, is also known for his roles in Uncle Buck (1989), My Girl (1991), The Good Son (1993), The Pagemaster (1994), Richie Rich (1994), Party Monster (2003) and the music video for Michael Jackson's "Black or White". At the height of his fame, Culkin was regarded as the most successful child actor since Shirley Temple. He ranked at number two on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Kid-Stars" and E!'s list of the "50 Greatest Child Stars" Culkin began acting at the age of four. Early roles saw him appearing in a stage production of Bach Babies at the New York Philharmonic. He continued appearing in roles on stage, television, and films throughout the 1980s. Notable parts in this period included an episode of the popular action series The Equalizer, in which he played a kidnapping victim, and in the TV movie The Midnight Hour. After several years of inactivity, Culkin returned to acting in 2000, with a London West End role in the play Madame Melville. Culkin headed back into motion pictures in 2003 with Party Monster, in which he played party promoter Michael Alig, a drug user and murderer. Culkin began doing voice-over work, with appearances in Seth Green's Robot Chicken and in 2009, he appeared in a UK-based commercial for Aviva Insurance (formerly Norwich Union) to help promote their company's rebranding. Culkin stared into the camera stating, "Remember me." Culkin married actress Rachel Miner in 1998 but they separated in 2000 and divorced in 2002. He dated actress Mila Kunis from May 2002 - 2010, and has been dating former All My Children actress Jordan Lane Price since Nov 2013.

His life has not been plain sailing in other areas either – in September 2004, he was arrested in Oklahoma City for the possession of marijuana, two other controlled substances, 16.5 milligrams of Alprazolam and 32 milligrams of Clonazepam. He was jailed briefly and then released on a $4,000 bail. He pleaded not guilty at the trial, then later reversed this plea to guilty. He received three one-year suspended prison sentences and was ordered to pay $540 in fees. As a 10-year-old child, Culkin became close friends with pop singer Michael Jackson. He spoke at Jackson’s trial on sex abuse charges, claiming he had slept in Jackson's bedroom on countless occasions but also stating that this bedroom was arranged over two storeys and that Jackson had never sexually molested him or touched him in improper ways.

The duo had seemed like a happy couple for 12 years. But things started to unravel as they formed different opinions on how to raise their six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. In a recent issue of UsWeekly, it was claimed by a source: 'She would not tolerate him yelling at the kids. There were a few times Angie said she was terrified.' But another source said it was not scary. 'When Brad raises his voice and yells at the kids, it's almost comical. He's not one of those guys with a temper. He's not a drill sergeant.' While Brad, 52, wanted to stay in one place, Angelina, 41, was more interested in having the brood travel the world with them, it was claimed. And the Maleficent star preferred a more relaxed attitude with the kids, it was alleged, while Brad liked more traditional rules. 'Brad wants them to have a normal upbringing and worries that they’ll come out spoiled, elitist

and not grounded,' a source told UsWeekly back in 2009. 'But Angie feels they should be "children of the world." They argue about it all the time: heated, screaming fights.' The weekly also added that they were living in separate wings of his 80,000sq ft Hollywood Hills home. The couple's estate - will be divided with their other properties as they hash out a $400million divorce agreement after signing a prenup - is made up of 5 houses and features a skate park, 3 swimming pools and a secret cave.

& t i u Fr Facts Veg Plums The humble plum – the second most cultivated fruit in the world – has hidden depths as far as our health is concerned Plums are a good source of vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B-6 and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol). The minerals present in plums include potassium, fluoride, phosphorous, magnesium, iron, calcium and zinc. Plums also supply dietary fibre, sorbitol and isatin, and because offer very low calories without any harmful fats, they are great for relieving constipation and digestive problems. A medium-sized fresh plum contains 113 mg of potassium that helps manage high blood pressure and reduce your risk of stroke. Eating plums can protect against cancer and cell damage. They clean up harmful free radicals thanks to anthocyanins, the reddish-blue pigment in some varieties. Dried plums—aka prunes—are a tried-and-true way to help your bowel do its work (each prune has one gram of fibre). Eat them as is, or make a batch of softened prunes to keep in the fridge to have with granola and yoghurt: soak a few handfuls of prunes in freshly boiled water, cool and store in a covered jar in the fridge. Plums can help prevent diabetes. Plums have a low glycaemic index, so eating them can help you control your blood sugar and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, according to the Dietitians of Canada. Plums can help promote bone health – researchers from Florida State and Oklahoma State universities tested two groups of postmenopausal women over the span of 12 months for bone density. One group ate 100 grams of prunes per day (about 10 prunes); the other ate 100 grams of dried apples. Both

groups took calcium and vitamin D supplements. The findings indicated that the prune group had substantially higher bone mineral density in the spine and forearms. The Chinese believe plums symbolise good fortune. Umeboshi (Japanese pickled plums) were thought by the samurai to combat fatigue. More than one hundred varieties of plum stones were found on Henry VIII’s flagship the Mary Rose, which sank in 1545. Plum trees are grown on every continent except Antarctica.

It is also known as the largest species of squid in the world. It can be up to 46 feet in length. This also classifies it as the largest known invertebrate out there as well.

In the colder waters is where you will find the Colossal Squid. There isn’t much at all known about this type of squid. Therefore it is hard to guess what their actual behaviors are. It is believed that they are loners in the water and that they eat large volumes of food daily. Due to their enormous size, the Colossal Squid consumes a big volume of large fish out

there. They are very powerful so they don’t have any trouble capturing and consuming these large fish The only known predator of the Colossal Squid is the Sperm Whale The first Colossal Squid was identified in 1925. It was found in the stomach of a dead Sperm Whale. It wasn’t until 1981 though that one was actually captured alive in a net. The largest one every captured was recorded in 2007. It took place in New Zealand and weighed almost 1,100 pounds.

People Who Come And Go - Jan & Sue, Jayena, Granada This is the life!!! Here is one crazy couple who have found total happiness 1000m up in the mountains in the idyllic countryside near Jayena, in Granada province. Jan and Sue, who met a number of years ago and embarked on a ‘let’s renovate houses in Europe and sail around in a boat’ life together, bought a huge plot of abandoned olive trees at an excellent price and presented the local town hall with a daring plan to build a round, rotating house that would follow the sun. Unfortunately, after the initial shock of the locals, who had never seen anything like it, Andalusian building regs beat them down to a more traditional, square house, with an inner patio, built with a highly insulated, innovative material that makes the house ultra efficient. They built the house entirely by themselves, enlisting the help of a few locals. Living in a shed on the plot for three years, they only completed enough to move in this Summer. The result is stunning, with a huge main living area with massive picture windows over fabulous views, and the rest of the house around the central patio. Grand Designs in the sunshine!

Life in the middle of nowhere suits this couple perfectly. “We can be ourselves without worrying about neighbours and yet we have built up a wide circle of friends in the area and plenty who visit! We enjoy doing the olives, which is not in any way profitable, but very rewarding nonetheless. We run our own electricity, have our own water, but we still have satelite TV and great internet – so we are not at all cut off. Our only plan at the moment is to finish everything before we die and enjoy this fantastic piece of heaven.” I met this amazing couple about 5 years ago, when we scoured the countryside to find the perfect plot and the rest is history! Good luck Jan and Sue and keep partying! By Toni Waterman, Unspoilt Andalusia (see advert below)

Dogs CAN'T Smell Fear It's a well-worn saying that animals can smell and sense our fear - but is there any truth in it? It's a long standing theory that animals can indeed smell our fear - dogs included - but is this the case? Having conducted years of laboratory and field research on canine olfaction (the action of smelling), Quora user Jim Johnston has provided some insight. "It is possible that a fear reaction changes human chemistry in ways that dogs might detect. "If this were true, individual dogs might well learn to detect it without explicit training because it may be to the dog's advantage to do so." "However, I doubt that science has isolated off gassing compounds associated with fear reactions."

But the saying is not completely redundant they do have other ways of detecting fear. "I suspect it is more likely that if some dogs respond to human fear reactions it is on the basis of visual cues associated with human behavior. "When people are afraid, their behaviour often changes in some common ways, regardless of otherwise varying circumstances. "For instance, our muscles usually tense up, our breathing changes, and our movements are likely to become quicker. "Dogs are very sensitive to subtle aspects of human behaviour and are likely to respond to such changes, especially because such circumstances have in the past had a significant impact on the dog's behavior." So although we DO sweat more when afraid, secreting chemicals, 'smelling fear' is more a handy phrase.

Asbestos - Have You Been In Contact?

In this edition, I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask!

breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link.

I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960’s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago.

Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a persons work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the persons estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the

La Vaqueria - Benamargosa There is nothing worse than this horrible habit modern day retailers have of starting Christmas advertising too early...at least let it wait until after the end of October. I read a little internet funny which said, "It should be made legal to murder anyone who mentions Christmas before Halloween and of course you could always use the corpse to jazz up your decorations. Hilarious I thought, but by the time you are reading this those scary parties will have been and gone and we will be headed towards Christmas whether we like it or not. So, in the shop we have an offer on all crafting and card making materials...by one product at full price and all subsequent goodies have a 10% discount. Although we still have 2 months to go I must talk about The La Vaqueria "Christmas Do"..with our Sunday Lunch Buffets having become so popular that we have, on occasion, had to turn people away, we are strongly advising booking well in advance.

This year we are planning a medieval banquet on December the 21st, the ancient mid winter celebration, a feast to beat all feasts when folks gathered together, in the houses of the nobility if they were lucky enough to share good food, warmth and maybe a crust of bread to take home if their lord deemed them to have been a good serf throughout the year! The halls will be decked, we are on the hunt for mummers and we will be offering a free mulled wine to those who dress the part!!! (not obligatory) Meanwhile...check out our list of events for November on our main advert on page 107

Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen), his wife Leslie and their six children live deep in the wilderness of Washington state. Isolated from society, Ben and Leslie devote their existence to raising their kids -- educating them to think critically, training them to be physically fit and athletic, guiding them in the wild without technology and demonstrating the beauty of co-existing with nature. When Leslie dies suddenly, Ben must take his sheltered offspring into the outside world for the first time. There is something wildly pompous and preposterous about Ben, who is against “organised religion” but thinks Buddhism is ethically and intellectually superior to Christianity. This

is a macho story of men’s intellectual development: Ben’s son, Bo (George MacKay) is the academic star; the sisters aren’t important and, in this film, women are either irrelevant, saintly, or dead. Star Rating **/*****

Seeing Is Believing - Eyejusters Seeing is believing – Eyejusters As life evolves and technology moves forward we all look towards a better life. Many new or improved products are to be located at events such as the Gadget Show Live. Also, some can be seen protelevision on grammes, along with new inventions, plus items that have advanced over the years. From home, garden, sound, vision and connectivity, plus transport and many other aspects, numerous new and innovative products can be found, several of which bring a very welcome solution to a problem or situation, in our daily lives. Eyejusters are revolutionary, adjustable focus

reading glasses. One single pair of glasses replaces the need to have more than one pair of reading glasses for different requirements. Simply turn the dials to change the power of each of the lenses. Various tasks require, perhaps, different lenses, for reading glasses, whether computer work, hobbies, reading music or print – even threading a needle. By turning a small, hidden dial (one for each lens), the focus range can be changed – all with just one pair of glasses. It could be that ‘normal’ reading glasses are unsuitable, because a person’s eyes are both different. This is not a problem, as each lens has a hidden adjustment. The lenses can be adjusted independently from +0.00 to +3.00 dioptres or to anything in between. This range covers many people’s needs, daily. Also, eyes age and the need for

‘stronger’ reading glasses becomes apparent. Eyejusters glasses, having adjustable lenses, adapt to this need. The Eyejusters ranges include stainless steel, acetate, combination and multilayer attractive, high-quality frames, with several choices in each, so there is a style for everyone. Spring Hinges and Anti-Scratch coating, on the thin, lightweight lenses, are additional features. Several years of research and development have gone into the Eyejusters range of glasses. All frames have a high-quality finish and, naturally, comfortable nosepads. A signature print microfibre cleaning cloth and magnetic-close hard case is included. I find the Eyejusters glasses to be very effective, easy to wear, of excellent quality and attractive. Locate at independent retailers and eyecare specialists, also online.

Thoughts About Their Grandparents - All Aged 8! Our daughter who is also aged 8 was asked the same question. Leoni’s answer... They start getting grey hair and they start walking slowly

tie your shoes.

Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no children of their own. They like other people’s.

They have to answer questions like, ‘Why isn’t God married’? and ‘How come dogs chase cats?’

A grandfather is a man and a grandmother is a lady!

When they read to us, they don’t skip. They don’t mind if we ask for the same story time and time again.

They can take their teeth and gums out. Grandparent’s don’t have to be smart.

Grandparents don’t have to do anything except be there when we come to see them... They are so old they shouldn’t play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money.

Everybody should try to have a grandmother, especially if you don’t have television because they are the only grownups who like to spend time with us. They know we should have a snack time before bed time, and they say prayers with us and kiss us even when we’ve acted bad.

When they take us for walks, they slow down past things, like pretty flowers and catterpillars. They show us and talk to us about the colours of the flowers and also why we shouldn’t step on ‘cracks’.

Grandpa is the smartest man on earth! He teaches me good things, but I don’t get to see him enough to get as smart as him!

They don’t say, ‘Hurry up’!

It’s funny when they bend over; you hear gas leaks and they blame their dog.

) : a h a Jokes h Thanks to MP for the following jokes A sweet grandmother Telephoned St. Joseph's Hospital. She timidly asked, "Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?" The operator said, "I'll be glad to help, dear. What's the name and room number of the patient?" The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, Norma Findlay, Room 302." The operator replied, "Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room." After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, "I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her Physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow." The grandmother said, "Thank you. That's wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good News." The operator replied, "You're more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?" The grandmother said, "No, I'm Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me shit." ------------------------------------------------------------I haven't been able to get out much recently so I arranged for a mobile hairdresser to call round. We were chatting and she said, "I don't just do haircuts you know... I do extras too." "Really?" I asked, "Like what?" "Anything within reason," she winked, licking her lips. "Girls got to make a living." I thought about it for a few seconds before deciding, "Go on then, f""K it, I'll have a wet shave too."

I'm thinking of forming a "The Police" tribute band. We'd be called The PCSOs. When we turn up to gigs, we'll ask the audience nicely to stay where they are, and then call The Police to come and play for us ------------------------------------------------------------A surgeon has just been fined ÂŁ250,000 for gross negligence. He removed the kidney of a patient instead of their gallbladder. At his tribunal he said, "I am very sorry for the mistake, and I mean that from the bottom of that red, wobbly, pumpy thing just above my tummy." ------------------------------------------------------------My girlfriend was putting sun cream on. "Do you mind doing my back?" she asked. "Let's pretend I'm your butler" I winked. "My name's Dawes." "Ok!" she giggled, "Would you mind doing my back, Dawes?" And that was all the invitation I needed... ------------------------------------------------------------People said I'd never get over my obsession with Phil Collins. But take a look at me now ------------------------------------------------------------A young lady walks into a supermarket and on her way round she sees the chap who'd had his wicked way with her the previous evening, after they had met in a club. He was stacking washing powder boxes on the shelves. "You lying bastard!" she shouts," last night you told me you were a stunt pilot!" "No," he says, "I told you I was a member of the Ariel display team." ------------------------------------------------------------"Sorry it's just not working out", I said, "it's definitely me and not you, I've given it plenty of time and tried so hard but there's just nothing there!". "Ok", said the doctor, "have you tried Senocot?"
