Happy month of Halloween to those who celebrate such a scare-mongering day! In Spain October 31st marks a day to celebrate and remember those friends and loved ones who have passed on, and transitioned to ‘the other side’ as they continue their journeys as souls. And while Trick and Treating amongst the children isn’t so common as it is in the USA, it’s beginning to grow in popularity, so if you have kids it’s a nice idea to allow them to indulge in a scary costume as they prepare to collect candy on the evening of the 31st. My husband and I just returned from a last road trip with just the two of us, before the baby arrives. We’re aware that life will be totally different at that point so we made the most of time alone while we still can. We drove all the way from California to Idaho to begin with, stopping at a town called Eureka in Nevada en-route. We found ourselves driving along Highway 50 in the black of night, which was a Halloween-like experience in itself. Unfortunately, we hit two bunny rabbits, and almost a fox, and more bugs splattered against the windshield than I’d ever known before. When we arrived at our hotel the receptionist was wearing a t-shirt which read ‘I survived Highway 50.’ She told us that many cars get totalled after hitting larger animals on the highway, such as elk, deer, and moose. So we were actually lucky to only collide with rabbits. After spending two days back in Ketchum, Idaho where we used to live, we went to Oregon and a really cool place called Cannon Beach, then back on the road to the beautiful

Bouquet VS Baby A young wedding guest has become an internet sensation as in her desperation to catch the bride's bouquet, she was filmed allowing the baby she was holding to fall to the floor. She dived backwards in an attempt to snatch the flowers at the reception in Wellington, New Zealand, but was unsuccessful – they were caught by a taller girl who will now presumably be finding love. She then immediately picked the uninjured baby up off the floor. The video has been posted on YouTube where the uploader wrote: "Note: the baby was not harmed."

Pigged Out A man who rented out his father's house was shocked to discover that the tenants had moved a 50-stone pig into the lounge. Dr Gary Armstrong had made "no animals" a condition of the tenancy of the house in Lea in Lincolnshire but became concerned when a builder reported a large hole had been dug in the garden. Dr Armstrong suspected it was a dog but an inspection discovered the enormous pig. It is understood eviction proceedings are underway.

De Cotta Law Legalisation of properties in Andalusía’s Axarquía Region By Francisco Javier Martín Martín, Lawyer with De Cotta Law In Andalusía, especially in the Axarquia area, there are a number of properties, mainly private homes, on land not zoned for construction. Typically these properties have been built without a licence or without complying with the parameters of a building licence from a local authority, which has possibly ignored the infringement of planning laws. These houses have been in limbo between legality and illegality as most were built some years ago, so the deadline has passed for the local government to take action against the illegal construction and uphold urbanisation laws. Some of these homes currently do not have utilities connected, such as electricity and water; although Andalusía’s regional government has approved the Law (Decree 2/2012) which means that owners can now apply for utilities and register their homes. To achieve this, the property owners must secure a licence for their property, known as an Asimilado a fuera de ordenación – this licence is issued by the local town hall for each relevant property in its municipality that is currently outside the planning laws. Also with this licence, owners can proceed to contract utilities from the relevant companies supplying electricity and water etc. However, to obtain the licence, every homeowner will have to follow a procedure that currently is not entirely clear and will depend on the different criteria for each local authority. This procedure will oblige the owner to pay a series of fees to the authorities; the amount depends on the specifications of each building.

This is why it is imperative to seek legal advice to negotiate the somewhat complex procedure and where possible to obtain a licence. Where the property has been licenced, it is then necessary to register at the Land Registry with the new dimensions and construction. The good news is that the Land Registrars are now dealing the legalisation of many defective applications to ensure that the size of the plot is adequate. As the aim is to protect the environment and prevent overbuilding, this is good news for the future of the area. Fun Facts About Halloween Ghoulish facts.... Teng Chieh or the Lantern Festival is one Halloween festival in China. Lanterns shaped like dragons and other animals are hung around houses and streets to help guide the spirits back to their earthly homes. To honor their deceased loved ones, family members leave food and water by the portraits of their ancestors. Halloween celebrations in Hong Kong are known as Yue Lan or the “Festival of the Hungry Ghosts” during which fires are lit and food and gifts are offered to placate potentially angry ghosts who might be looking for revenge.

The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum.

Both Salem, Massachusetts, and Anoka, Minnesota, are the self-proclaimed Halloween capitals of the world. Boston, Massachusetts, holds the record for the most Jack O’Lanterns lit at once (30,128). The Village Halloween parade in New York City is the largest Halloween parade in the United States. The parade includes 50,000 participants and draws over 2 million spectators. In many countries, such as France and Australia, Halloween is seen as an unwanted and overly commercial American influence. Children are more than twice as likely to be killed in a pedestrian/car accident on Halloween than on any other night. Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Cútar, pronounced Cootar, forms part of the Axarquía Route of the Raisin. It is known as the Fountain of Paradise, Fuente del Paraiso from the arab word Kautzar, because of the twelve springs within the town. The village is surrounded by vine covered hills and as you drive the 6 kilometres up the winding road from Benamargosa it remains hidden in the folds of the mountains until you round the last bend at km 5 where all you can see is Comares towering up into the sky, then suddenly the white oasis of Cútar appears, a mountainous Atlantis majestically rising from the depths below. This jewel of a town sparkles in the sunlight as you drive down into the entrance to the village where the first sight to behold is the beautifully restored fountain, the Aina Alcaharia which used to be an Arab Chapel before converting to a well and fountain, the only surviving Arab Fountain of its kind in Málaga province.

Cútar is proud of its Moorish roots and goes back in time to the fifteenth century for two days every October, to celebrate the Monfí Festival where you can experience the smells, tastes and music of that era. There are belly dancers, falconry displays and street entertainment. Homes are opened as museums showing many items of the past, traditional methods of weaving, paintings and pictures, old photographs of the village in bygone days. There is a Moorish arch known as the Algorfa with a house above it. At the top, western side of Cútar sits the 16th century Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación dominating the village with its beautiful Baroque side chapel. It was originally known as Our Lady of the Angels and was built over an Arab mosque. If you haven´t yet visited Cútar I can highly recommend it as being one of the few remaining virtually untouched, traditional white villages in the Axarquía and October is the best month to visit with the Monfi Festival this year on 11th & 12th.

Welcoming New Owners At Legends Bar Its all change at Legends Bar, Torre Del Mar The time has come for Austin & Angela to bid farewell to being the Owners of Legends Bar in Torre Del Mar. Since the bar opened in June 2014, it has been popular with both English and Spanish customers alike, showing a wide selection of Sport and offering a great selection of Tapas and light snacks. The new owners are Shaun & Rachel Barnett, along with their youngest son Mattie, who have moved over from Lincoln in the UK. Shaun has a long history of managing bars and nightclubs, whilst Rachel’s background lies with the local authorities. Mattie is a qualified FA referee, so will be on hand to discuss the finer points of the game. Initial plans are to improve on the existing Legends theme, but also to increase the food offering, promising to implement the return of the traditional Sunday roast amongst other things. Until 22! The story of Oana.... 18 months ago, with my dreams in my pockets, I left my parents’ house in Romania for a better life in Spain. I’d been here three years ago, but couldn’t get a job. This time it will be OK, I thought. I'll have a nice job and a good salary. My boyfriend’s mother had suggested we come back to Spain, because this time we would be lucky and both of us would find jobs immediately. So we had decided that we would try again. We arrived in Spain with just 200€, but at least we had a place to stay – my boyfriend’s parents’ house. We thought it would take no more than a couple of weeks to find work – my boyfriend in the campo and me perhaps as a waitress in a bar or restaurant. However, seven months later, although he had found work, I still had no job. I kept asking myself why I had come back. Well, because I wanted a new life for us; we had dreams to fulfill. But I had left a good job –

I used to work in a Cash and Carry and enjoyed it, surrounded by nice people. One day, a friend called me to say that a restaurant in La Caleta needed a waitress. I immediately took my CV to the restaurant, full of hope and with my best smile. Although the owner said he didn’t need anyone for the moment, he rang me two days later and offered me the job. While I was waiting for the bus on my first day, two ladies tried to ask me in Spanish what time the bus would arrive. I answered in English and that impressed them. They asked if I had a job – I explained that I was starting one that day. They said a friend of theirs had a bar in Torre del Mar and needed a barmaid; I gave them my phone number just in case. I had just arrived at the restaurant when my phone rang – it was the bar owner saying he wanted to see me. I was so pleased; I could choose my job. I decided to go to the bar in Torre del Mar because of the nice English ladies and I also thought the work might be more varied. So I finally had work and it felt so good. I had my own money for the first time in months! It was far from plain sailing, though, and there were problems, but I realised my life wasn’t bad. Recipe Of The Month hardcore coleslaw Coleslaw is such a versatile side dish, perfect for barbecues and works just as well made with winter vegetables and served alongside roast pork in the winter! ingredients 1 bulb fennel ¼ small celeriac, peeled ¼ small red cabbage ¼ small white cabbage 1 beetroot, peeled 1 Spanish onion 2 large carrots, peeled 1 tbsp fennel seeds, toasted 2 tbsp flaky sea salt 1 lemon, zest only 1 tsp chopped fresh dill 1 tbsp chopped chervil 1 tbsp chopped fresh flatleaf parsley For the garlic dressing 5 garlic cloves, grated 2 free-range egg yolks 4 tsp white wine vinegar 35g/1¼oz English mustard 1 lemon, juice only 1 tbsp salted anchovies 2 tsp caster sugar 350ml/12fl oz vegetable oil salt cayenne pepper, to taste Preparation method 1. Finely slice the fennel, celeriac, red cabbage, white cabbage, beetroot, onion and carrots and place into a large mixing bowl. Add the fennel seeds and salt. Mix thoroughly, then leave to stand for 20 minutes so the vegetables wilt and cure in the salt. 2. For the garlic dressing, add the garlic, egg yolks, white wine vinegar, mustard, lemon juice, anchovies and sugar to a food processor and blend until smooth. While the food processor is still running, slowly pour in the vegetable oil in a thin steady stream until the mayonnaise is emulsified. Season with salt and cayenne pepper, to taste. Pass through a fine sieve to make it really smooth. Keep in the fridge until needed.

3. Rinse the vegetables under cold running water for a couple of minutes. Place in a clean tea towel and squeeze out all of the moisture. Put the vegetables in a clean mixing bowl and add the lemon zest and chopped herbs. Check and add seasoning if required. Fold in as much mayonnaise as you like, you may not need it all. Mix together and serve. The coleslaw will keep in the fridge for up to one week.

Halloween Popcorn Treats Tasty dish for Halloween night ingredients Vegetable cooking spray 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1/3 cup popcorn kernels 3 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 6 cups (12-ounces) mini marshmallows 6 fun-size caramel peanut chocolate bars (such as Snickers), cut into 1/4-inch pieces 3 (3-inch) chocolate chip cookies, crumbled 1/3 cup chopped salted almonds, 1/2 cup orange and black chocolate candies (such as M&M’s)

In a medium saucepan, heat the butter over low heat. Add the vanilla extract and marshmallows. Stir constantly until the marshmallows have melted and the mixture is smooth, about 5 minutes. Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the popcorn. Using a spatula, sprayed with cooking spray, stir until the popcorn is coated. Spread the mixture over the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle with the chocolate bar pieces, cookies, almonds and chocolate candies. Using a spatula, gently press the toppings into the popcorn. Allow the mixture to dry for 1 hour. Break into 2-inch pieces and serve!

Directions Spray the inside of a large mixing bowl with vegetable cooking spray, and lightly spray a baking sheet. Set aside. In a 3 quart or larger, heavy-bottomed pan, heat the oil and popcorn over medium-high heat. Cover the pan and shake gently. Cook until all the kernels have popped, about 3 minutes. When held or caught, hagfish use their slime as a way to ward off predators.

To wipe the slime away, the hagfish will tie itself into a knot and work the knot from its head to its tail, scraping off the slime as it goes. If its nostril fills with slime, the hagfish will “sneeze” to clear out the clog. Perhaps even more disgusting, however, is how they feed. They first attach themselves to their prey like a leech, tear off some flesh, then proceed to eat the victim from the inside out. Although they have been observed actively hunting fish, hagfish mostly feed on dead and dying creatures on the sea floor. They perform an important ecological service, cleaning and recycling dead animals from the sea floor. Their slime contains tens of thousands of very thin (100 times smaller than a human hair) protein threads. The threads are extremely strong, and when stretched and dried out they resemble spider silk. There are an estimated 76 species of hagfish, which live in cold waters around the world. They can be found as deep as 5,600 feet, and prefer to stay near the soft sea floor, where they can bury themselves if threatened.

Amazing Marine Life Continued The largest hagfish, Eptatretus goliath, can grow to more than four feet, while the smallest species reach only several inches long. Hagfish are scaleless with soft skin. The skin of the hagfish has been described as covering its body like a loosely fitting sock. Colours vary with the species, and range from pink to bluegrey. They have four hearts: one serves as the main pump, while the other three serve as accessory pumps. They breathe through their nose and skin. Hagfish take in water through their nasopharyngeal duct, which leads to their pharynx and gill pouches. Different species have between 5 and 15 pairs of gills. Hagfish also have a welldeveloped network of capillaries in their skin, which might allow them to “breathe” through their skin when buried in mud. Hagfish can’t see well, but have other sharp senses. They don’t have compound eyes that can resolve images, but instead possess sim-

ple eyespots that can detect light. Hagfish depend on their well-developed senses of smell and touch to navigate and find food. They have several pairs of barbels – sensing tentacles – around their mouths and a single nostril on the top of their heads. Hagfish are the only living animals that have a skull but no spine. Their skeleton is made up entirely of cartilage. Like lampreys, they are jawless; instead, they have a pair of horizontally moving structures with tooth-like projections that they use to grasp and tear off pieces of food.

If you speak to any local estate agent, and ask them if they are busy, their answer will be a resounding YES! We are all rushing around the countryside taking on properties and showing Northern European clients around. And the big question I am frequently asked is about house prices. Have we reached the bottom? Should I be buying now before prices go up? Should I be selling later if the market is recovering?

In a recent survey, 84% of experts agreed that there are signs of a recovery, but none could be certain that we are heading for steady price rises. But all recognised that certain sectors were seeing significant recovery in both sales and prices, namely within the new build sector, and in small, niche sectors, such as in localised areas where the buyers are from abroad. But bargains are fast running out, they agreed. It is clear that the market is different from before the crisis. It is now an extremely fragmented one, with some sectors growing quickly, others not at all. It might be likened to a patient on the mend, but still very delicate.

It is a very difficult question to answer. From first hand experience, yes, the market is moving, and there are plenty of foreign buyers once again turning their gaze towards the sunny climes of nice, safe Southern Spain! But we must not be too over confident! According to the INE, so far this year Spain has had five consecutive quarters of house price rises, up 4% on average in the period April to June 2015, compared to 2007. New build is up (4.9%) with an improvement in the construction industry (22% of new jobs created in the last year across Spain have been in construction). However, the Notaries have reported a fall this year of 7.5% in house prices nation-wide. Per-

Based on a true story, Everest takes place in 1996. Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) helped popularise this form of mountaineering, his company Adventure Consultants taking teams of tourists up Everest throughout the early 1990s. On this fateful trip, his group has to acclimatise to their surroundings and get to know each other. A journey that starts out joyous soon becomes unnecessarily challenging thanks to delays, and the questionable quality of some of the ropes and ladders in use. The mountaineers press on, only to be battered by a blizzard that ruins visibility, and hit by unexpected avalanches that make the climb even more

precarious. We’re told that human beings aren’t designed to function at that height – equivalent to the cruising altitude of a 747 – and we see evidence of that as the struggle becomes deadly serious, and yet those that can continue upwards. As the situation becomes evermore grave, the film ricochets from the climbers on the mountain, to those at base camp trying to get them down, to their families at home desperate for good news. Back up the mountain, life and death decisions are being made, with oxygen becoming a precious commodity. Seeing death up close and witnessing the effect that is has on their families back home makes you question why these individuals felt the need to tackle the mountain in the first place.
