It’s that spooky time of year again where we all have an excuse to dress up as ugly witches, and spine-curdling wart-infested zombies. Here in the USA they make a bigger deal out of Halloween than they do in many other countries. Unfortunately, for the last two years I have lived in homes where trick and treaters did not visit, as the houses were out of the way or in particularly quiet and boring neighbourhoods. But this year is a different story. This year we are now living in a house in a neighbourhood where there are lots of children, which means trick or treaters will be out in their droves. The lady who lived in this house before us said that last year she had a huge bagful of candy to give out and it was all gone within an hour. And then she had to turn off the lights and hide away to avoid confronting disappointed kiddies for the rest of the night. So my husband and I realise we need to be prepared, and for good measure we are planning on putting baby Ty in a cute little scary costume to get into the spirit of things (excuse the deliberate pun)! Shortly after Halloween the three of us will be winging back to Spain to embark on a six week holiday in Torre del Mar, where Ty will celebrate his first birthday, plus his second Christmas. It will be a chance for his uncles and aunt to meet him for the first time, and also his three cousins who live in Spain. Plus his Nanny and Granddad will be getting lots of time with him (a break for my husband and I!)

That’s pants A burglar’s strong underwear game led to his downfall when his distinctive pants were held up in court. Darren Machon was sporting some powerful Topman boxers with patterns of hot dogs, chips, doughnuts and hamburgers when he broke into a house in South Wales. A woman who lives in the home in Bridgend saw the 39-year-old’s colourful underwear because his trousers were hanging down. A spokesman for South Wales Police said: ‘The pants were unmistakable and were described by a woman who had got within just a few feet of Machon as she caught him red handed, bent over, rummaging through her downstairs cupboards at approximately 6.40am. ‘He growled at her as he ran past her and out of the house but was later positively identified by the woman.’ He has since been jailed.
Rod A Choo Choo Every man should have a hobby – and Rod Stewart’s is building model train sets. In fact, he has a 1:87 scale model of New York’s Grand Central Station, circa 1940, measuring 1,500 square feet. He’s so attached to them, he takes them on tour with him and has posh hotels clear out entire rooms especially for his train set. He previously said of his pastime: ‘All my cases come in and they set up tables and lamps and it becomes my workshop. I do it on the road. Every man should have a hobby. ‘I’ve looked into buying a real one and it’s closer than you think. I’d love to own a steam engine and just sit on one.’ Rod also regularly covers on model train enthusiasts’ magazine Model Railroader, of which he says: ‘Every three years, Model Railroader magazine puts me on their cover, which is better than being a Rolling Stone.’

Computer Paranoia A great many people are daunted by the power and complexity of computers and are deathly afraid of them. Sometimes warnings about viruses or hackers on TV magazine programs scares the living daylights out of people, complicating the issue. Paranoia is an integral part of the role computers play in society today. But some people take it to gross extremes Customer: "Well, I just want to know if I load this disk into my computer, won't other people be able to get into my computer and access everything I have in there?" Tech Support: "No, that's not possible." Customer: "You see it on the TV all the time." Me: "DSL is a lot faster. It--" Friend's Father: "Yeah, but if you have DSL, there are a lot of threats." Me: "Yes, that's true to a degree, but there are firewalls that--" Friend's Father: "No, but they can hack into your computer even when it's off and steal your electricity." Me: "Umm...I'm pretty sure that won't happen."
Friend's Father: "It's all over the news. You mean to tell me they're wrong?" Me: "...I guess so." I work for the computer help desk of a large university. One of our more memorable clients is infamous for what I can only describe as techno-paranoia. The last time she called to tell us we were going to have to do something about the "Internet Communists." She was convinced that they were getting into her PC through her television and putting typographical errors in her word processing files. "They weren't there before," she insisted, "and I don't make those kinds of mistakes!" Once I helped a friend get online for the first time. Me: "Ok, do you have your Internet Explorer open" Him: "What!? Your Internet EXPLODED?" He was hysterical. I explained it all to him, but he was still terrified. Later, when I was done showing him how to surf the web, he asked: Him: "Are you sure the Internet is safe to use?"

De Cotta Law - Child Abduction Changing your Children’s country of residence – Child Abduction The summer holidays are coming to an end and for some families this means the end of a stay with a parent who lives or works in a different country. Perhaps the children want to remain in the UK after a holiday there, or they may want to move to Spain where they have enjoyed a long holiday visit with the non-custodial parent. Any change made without the agreement of both parents can lead to lengthy and stressful Hague Convention Child Abduction proceedings. Sadly, some parents think that they can apply for custody after they have moved to a new country or returned to their home country. However if you don´t have agreement about moving you must firstly apply to the courts in the country of your “habitual residence” for leave to remove the children. The European definition of residence for children is the country where they have school and friends and become settled. The younger the child the more quickly they will acquire a country of residence. For the parent who wishes to leave the country of habitual residence there is a heavy burden of proof to show that it is in the best interests of the children. In cases already dealt with in courts throughout Spain and the islands, we were able to show that the children would benefit from the move because they were returning to their home country with good opportunities for education, and where the family had a strong supporting network. The financial circumstances also need to be proved showing that the mother or father who has custody of the children can work or be better supported in the other country.
Each case is different but in all cases it is important to propose or agree a proper programme of visits for the parent who does not have custody. This should also include telephone, email or Skype contact to ensure that moving country has a limited effect on the parental relationships with the children. As with many aspects of Family and Inheritance law, prevention is always better than cure and it is definitely best to seek advice before changing your country of residence with your children. Real Life Halloween Crimes A few crimes that happened at Halloween The Hanging Woman, 2005 - A few days before Halloween 2005 in Frederica, Delaware, decorations were abundant. The town was ready for the holiday, with cobs webs, Jack-OLanterns, rubber monsters, and one very grisly hanging body amid the decor. As it turns out, a 42-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree in a very public residential area. The body hung 15 feet high without alarm for hours before residents started to notice that the body was not rubber-made. The Grand Finale, 1963 - On Halloween night, the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum hosted a "Holiday on Ice" skating exhibition. Unbeknownst to the attendees, a propane tank leaked through the entire performance, filling the unventilated room with doom. As the skaters prepared for their pinwheel finale, the gas made its way to an electric popcorn machine, igniting a massive explosion killing 75 people. The scene was considered by the fireman to be the most gruesome event the town had seen.
Disappearance of Stevie Damman, 1955 Mrs. Damman left her two-year-old son Stevie to watch her seven-month-old daughter on the street, while she went shopping. When she emerged from the store, the toddler and the baby were nowhere to be seen. A few blocks away the stroller was found with her little girl unscathed. Stevie however, was nowhere to be found. There were rumours that Mrs. Damman was abusive, though no official reports were filed. To this day, Stevie or his remains have not been found and no new information has been added to the case. Was it a kidnapping? Murder? A runaway? An abuse cover-up? No one knows. The Armed Eggers, 1998 - Karl Jackson and his girlfriend were driving through the Bronx on Halloween night when they were aggressively egged by a group of teenagers. Karl got out of his girlfriend's car to reprimand the teenagers, expecting them to run off. Instead, 17-year-old Curtis Sterling pulled out a gun and shot Karl in the chest. Karl was killed instantly. Because Sterling was a minor, he is serving only a 20 year prison sentence.

Empty Promises With the promise of the clean slate of a new school year looming, Mummy is going to turn over a new leaf and become Mrs Super Organised Perfect Mummy :) This year Mummy is going to get up in time to do her hair and make up before school, and then leave the house in time to walk the children there briskly, perhaps singing a rousing chorus from the Sound of Music on the way. No longer will a mad haired pyjama clad Mummy be seen hustling the cherubs into the car at 8.55am, shouting "JUST HURRY UP AND GET IN THE CAR!" Mummy is going to go through their school bags carefully after school each afternoon, perhaps while the children are eating the delicious home made snack she has lovingly prepared for them, because obviously the children will also be turning over a new leaf and will develop a sudden passion for nutritious food and vitamins etc. Mummy will read the letters in the school bags properly, and not just skim through them muttering darkly at the ones that require money, before chucking them all in a pile in the corner or losing them. Mummy will then make a note on the calendar of any important dates and events mentioned in the letters. Mummy will also read ALL the emails the school sends out about eleventy billion times a day and absorb the helpful information contained within. Not only this, but Mummy will actually check the calendar each evening to see what is coming up in the next week, instead of being confronted by a furious child ten minutes before they are due to leave the house demanding to know where their home made World Book Day/ International Day/ Children In Need costume is. This will probably cost Mummy an absolute fortune too, because she will have to give the children actual money for all the bake sales etc, instead of turning up the end of the day with no cash and scrabbling through her pockets to find a stray 20p encrusted with dog biscuits and instructing the children to haggle for whatever they can get for it, but you can't put a price on love, can you? Mummy will also make some sort of colour coded chart for all the children's extracurricular activites, so she knows exactly who she is tak-
ing where and when, thus avoiding forgetting any children anywhere this year. In addition, Mummy will listen carefully when they relate the endless sagas of how "Tilly said to Milly so Katie took Lucy's and then Milly told Sophie and Sophie said..." or "And then I swapped Toby that Moshi Monster for this Ultra Rare, but he only had a Golden and so then I swapped with Eddie for his Roxy and then..." Mummy will no longer tune out and think about wine whilst occasionally mumbling "Uh huh. Right. Yes, very unfair. What? Of course I'm listening!" Homework will be completed as soon as it is handed out, not the night before it is due in, and however stupid the craft projects that are set as 'homework', Mummy will not make subversive comments to the children such as what exactly are they going to learn about space by making a 'space pack' out of cereal boxes. Instead she will serenely browse Pinterest for inspiration before joining in with the pointless activity.

Recipe Of The Month It is always fun trying out new recipes and ideas for our ever popular cookie / dessert table – apart form the fact I simply love baking! The other day whilst sorting out some of my Mums old recipes cards I found this one that sounded rather tempting - Caramel Apple Squares. I have to say it is rather delicious, so please give it a try Caramel Apple Shortcake: Filling: 175g Plain Flour ½ tspoon salt 75g Margarine / butter 75g Brown Sugar Topping: 2 tablespoons Caramel Fudge Sauce 2 Cooking Apples 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Method: 1.) Prepare a hot oven 195 degrees – Fan 2.) Sift flour & salt into a bowl 3.) Rub in marg/butter until the mixture resembles bread crumbs 4.) Stir in brown sugar 5.) Spread over a shallow square tin (15cm Square) 6.) Peel, core and slice the apples place in a pan with caramel fudge sauce and heat until just warm, remove from the heat and arrange over the mixture in the tin 7.) Sprinkle with cinnamon 8.) Place in the oven and bake for 30 mins This dessert can be eaten hot or cold, it is delicious served warm with a heaped spoonful of vanilla ice cream.

Axarquia Animal Rescue Foster homes desperately needed to cope with deluge of abandoned animals 5 years ago Axarquia Animal Rescue was formed to help the abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats littering the countryside of the region. Since then they have re-homed over 1,500 animals. This year, the charity, run totally by volunteers, has been contacted to help rescue a far higher volume of abandoned animals than average. So much so it is difficult to cope with the constant influx of dogs and cats, especially puppies and kittens found abandoned, they are often dumped in bags or boxes either inside or near rubbish bins, sometimes on the roadside or even in sacks in river beds!

The number of animals needing rescue has been overwhelming, resulting in difficulties in locating volunteer foster homes to take these unfortunate little souls. When puppies or kittens are rescued their situation is life threatening so there is no alternative but to take them on. The pool of foster carers, so desperately needed for these animals, has all but dried up and people are unavailable as they take holidays during the height of summer. The charity does not have its own kennelling facilities and relies totally on the goodwill of fosterers, along with the support of a team of volunteers. Many puppies and kittens need hand rearing which puts pressure on those fosterers that remain.

AAR’s Foster Co-ordinator, Steph Powell, oversees a dedicated Facebook page for fosterers which allows networking across the fostering team. The stonefish is the most venomous fish in the world – its venom can kill within an hour if not treated – but they are kept in aquaria all over the world due to their unusual appearance. There are five species of stonefish that can be found in the coastal regions of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Some species of stonefish live in rivers. Usually, stonefish live close to coral reefs and underwater rocks. They often lie buried in the sand in shallow water. Stonefish are eaten as a delicacy in Asia. The size of a stonefish depends on the
species. It usually reaches 14 to 20 inches in length and up to 5 pounds in weight. The body of a stonefish is covered with encrusted brown or grey skin, with red, orange or yellow patches. Thanks to its specific texture and colour, stonefish easily blend in with their environment – they look like a stone or a part of the coral reef. The dorsal fin of a stonefish is modified into 13 spines, which they raise up whenever they are threatened. Venom is produced in the gland located in the base of each spine. This venom will be released after application of pressure – for example if someone steps on the fish hidden in the sand. The amount of venom released is proportional to the applied pressure – in other words, the greater the pressure, the greater the amount of venom. Empty venom sacs will be refilled in a couple of weeks.

Complete recovery requires an adequate amount of anti-venom. The stonefish is a carnivore (meat-eater). Its diet consists of various types of fish and shrimps. Stonefish hunt their prey using the factor of surprise (an ambush predator). They wait patiently for the prey to appear and then swallow it in a blink of an eye. The whole attack lasts 0.015 seconds. The stonefish is a slow swimmer, except when it chases its prey. Stonefish have several predators, such as big sharks (great white and tiger shark) and rays. Unlike other species of fish, the stonefish is able to survive 24 hours outside the water. Another interesting characteristic of stonefish is that it can spit water.
Stonefish can live as solitary creatures or as a part of a group. Just as in many other marine creatures, fertilisation takes place in the water. The female releases a huge number of eggs that will be sprayed with the male's sperm. These eggs are food for many sea creatures and only a small number of fertilised eggs will survive and reach maturity. Stonefish can survive from 5 to 10 years in the wild.

People Who Come And Go - Alex and Inge As mentioned in my previous article (September 2016) the Dutch and Belgians are buying up properties in Southern Spain as if the stock were going to run out!! Most are early retirement couples looking to let their properties and enjoy them themselves, but we are finally beginning to see the return of the younger generations too! Alex and Inge are a young Dutch couple with 2 year old twin children. They work hard, but are very family orientated. “We are most happy when we can both be with our kids at the same time and love to travel the world. For the future we are making plans that will allow us to spend more time with the kids; to be together,” says Alex. So they started to think about Spain, how to combine their desire to travel with family time and possibly making some money too! And that is when they found a beautiful, very large, renovated cortijo on a large plot in unspoilt countryside, only 20 minutes inland from Malaga city – and they are working hard to raise the money to buy it this Autumn and make it their own! “We want to make this new house into a very special place for families to rent and have
some real quality 'together time'. Relaxed for the kids and the parents as well!! This house will hopefully provide us with some income, but it will also be a really special place to celebrate holidays with our kids ourselves. Who knows what the future will hold for us with this house? There are lots of opportunities we are considering! One thing we hope is that everyone who enters the house will enjoy it and will make special memories there under the Andalucian sun!” Inge runs a specialist massage clinic for pregnant women and children – perhaps one day she will be working in her trade under the sun too! What a great turnout and thank you to all of the new musicians and vocalists who came to support Spencer Maybe. As it was such a success it is now a regular music event along with our 3rd Sunday each month Music Sunday Lunch hosted by Flip which is always very popular and sometimes full up so booking ahead is a good idea! Our Lunches have become even more popular as our reputation for good honest home cooked food spreads. We are also now covering a range of diets so we hope that we can give most people plenty of choice, everyone can now enjoy the experience! Autumn is now taking hold, fruits are being gathered and summer salads are making way for warming soups; with a new menu every week we always have something for everyone. During the week we have welcomed new students to our regular art groups so lots of fun as absolute beginners start to see progress very
quickly in their water colour endeavours. The same with the mosaics... people pick it up very quickly and can make something beautiful with very little tuition really - just a pointer or two and a little guidance in the right direction. My classes here started originally aimed at complete beginners, "having a go" with emphasis on enjoyment rather than producing a masterpiece. Of course, many people have become very adept over the years and produce original and satisfying pieces of work which will hold their own on any wall anywhere. Saturdays we have a stand at the ecological market between Trapiche and Vinuela at the garden centre... this is a lovely little market with a great atmosphere. I am there every week as my eldest daughter is now able to run La Vaqueria without me! La Vaqueria is a unique experience with something for everyone, suitable for all ages and children are most welcome. We are open 7 days a week and you can find us on google maps. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love – each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith – and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.
