As I sit down to write this monthly editorial I am wondering, where did winter go this year?! I am living in Ojai, California and here at least the weather has been hot and sunny for the last several months already, often in the 80s and sometimes even hitting 90 +. I am pretty sure it has been a similar story there in Spain, or so family and friends have told me. Summer is by far my favourite time of the year – like most other people – so I’m feeling happy that my winter coat hasn’t even made it out of the closet this year! My husband, me, and Baby Ty recently moved house again – this is the third house we have lived in since Ty was born 6.5 months ago, and fortunately we will have this one for at least a year… at least that is the plan! We are finally settling down and I am excited to be releasing my next Light book – The Light: A Book of Knowing this fall which includes the teachings of the Dalai Lama among other luminaries and authors. My first children’s book, Lori and the Love Tree will also be out sometime before the end of 2016. In September and October we are planning a trip back to Spain. Some of my friends and relatives there haven’t even met Ty yet so it will be a nice to see everyone – and for him to meet his uncles, aunts, and cousins. Hopefully the weather will have cooled down a little by then and the tourists will have mostly disappeared, which was always my favourite time of the year to be in Spain. In fact, we are looking for a house or apartment to rent for one month from September 15th to October 15th. If anyone has one available at this time for a reasonable cost then please let me know (info@thesentinella.com) – and if you email, send photos too!

No refuge here! A wealthy village in Switzerland has chosen to pay a fine of £200,000 instead of accepting its country’s imposed quota of ten refugees. Residents in Oberwil-Lieli, one of the wealthiest villages in Europe, voted ‘no’ in a referendum over whether to accept the refugees. The Swiss government had proposed a quota system across its 26 counties in order to meet its promise of taking in 50,000 asylum seekers across the country. But Oberwil-Lieli, which has 300 millionaires in a population of 2,200, rejected the refugees by 52 per cent to 48. One resident told Mail Online: ‘We do not want them here. It is as simple as that. We have worked hard all our lives and have a lovely village that we do not want it spoiled. ‘We are not suited to take in refugees. They would not fit in here.’ Andreas Glarner, the mayor of the village, denied that they were being racist by refusing the refugees. He said: ‘Yes, the refugees from Syria have to be helped but they are better served by being helped in the camps nearer their home. ‘Money could be sent to help them, but if we are housing them here it sends out the wrong message. Others will come and risk their lives crossing the ocean and paying people smugglers to bring them.’ He added that the language barrier would also be an issue. Chorizo surprise A woman took to Facebook after she claimed to have found a condom inside a sausage bought at her local supermarket. Ana Josefina Mender, from San Miguel de Tucuman in northern Argentina, said she bought some chorizo in her local supermarket and cut it open to find a ‘wrinkled condom dyed yellow’. She shared her grim discovery on her Facebook page. ‘I’ve just found the most disgusting thing in a chorizo, a condom,’ she posted. ‘I swear I won’t eat anything anymore! I bought it in Luque supermarket in Corrientes and Munecas area of Barrio Norte.’ What’s more, the fact the condom is stretched has led some users to suggest it may have been used before it found its way into the food. Others joked that it was an offer by the supermarket. ‘You buy a chorizo, you get a cover for it for free,’ one wrote.

Insurance Claims Here are some lines that actually appeared on insurance claim forms. Some are blatent lies, some couldn't be closer to the truth and the rest - I can only gather - were written by school dropouts!
A truck backed through my windshield into my wife's face.
I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.
My car was legally parked as it backed into another vehicle.
To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I struck a pedestrian.
I started to slow down but the traffic was more stationary than I thought.
The pedestrian had no idea which way to run as I ran over him.
The gentleman behind me struck me on the backside. He then went to rest in a bush with just his rear end showing.
The car in front hit the pedestrian but he got up so I hit him again. I saw a slow moving, sad faced old gentleman as he bounced off the roof of my car. A pedestrian hit me and went under my car. I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way.
The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention.
I told the police that I was not injured, but on removing my hat found that I had a fractured skull. I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment.

Tips For Staying Safe In The Sun It’s probably going to be a very hot summer just like every other year, but remember the sun is extremely hot and whilst you are having fun out in it, remember to be safe and wear plenty of sun screen. Here are some other tips for staying safe in the sun too... 1. Wear protective clothing. If possible, wear light long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and hats. Hats with wide brims not only cover your face, but they also protect other easy-to-forget spots like your ears and your scalp. 2. Make sunglasses your favourite accessory. Sunglasses shield your eyes from UV rays that can cause eye problems, like cataracts. 3. Limit your sun time, especially between 10am and 4pm, that's when the sun's rays are at their strongest. Plan indoor lunch breaks or schedule nap times during those hours. 4. Use sunscreen and use it right. UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. To protect your skin, put sunscreen on every part of your body that will be exposed to the sun at least 15 minutes before going outside. When choosing sunscreen, pick one with at least SPF 15 and that offers protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours. 5. Say no to tanning. There's no such thing as a safe tan, whether you're inside or outside. Get to know your skin. Skin cancer is easier to treat when caught early, so get to know your skin and watch for changes such as new skin markings, like moles, bumps, scaly spots, or places where your skin has changed colour. 6. Drink plenty of water, do not let yourself become dehydrated. 6 - 8 glasses a day is recommended. 7. Give up the vitamin D excuse. Tanning isn't a safe way to get vitamin D. If you're concerned about your vitamin D levels, talk to your doctor about the sources that are best for you.

No Need To Paint Now is the time to have the exterior of your property painted and not repeat the process until 2030. Exterior painting and decorating can be a real chore, many properties on the Costa del Sol due to the unpredictable and severe weather that is experienced at the end of the summer and beginning of spring have to be redecorated every 2 to 3 years. Another annoying problem is the Sahara sand rain which gets deposited at least twice a year. In this modern day and age when there are many long life exterior home improvements such as UPVC windows, doors, and shutters etc, which can last for 20 years or more, why can't the same technology be applied to exterior masonry coatings? Many people are unaware that there is a com-

Meaning For The Word “Up” Who could have thought that one teeny weeny word could have so many meanings...! When we awake in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?
This UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.
We call UP our friends.
It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with 100 or more.
And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

Periana is situated north of the lake at Viñuela and has an excellent source of natural water which has made it attractive to settlers since prehistoric times. The drive towards the village from Puente don Manuel takes you up a mildly curving road where each bend brings new sights to delight even the most jaded of eyes. Gently rolling green hills sit below the sharply contrasting jagged grey mountains which tower above like sleeping giants. This village, like many within the Axarquía has had its fair share of tragedy. In 1884 an earthquake destroyed many homes and took just under 60 lives, the phylloxera plague killed the vines and floods ravaged part of the area. However, the Periana we see today is a bustling village alive and well and blessed with the most fantastic views of La Viñuela reservoir and the distant coast at Torre del Mar. The village is famous for its peaches and its verdial olive oil. The peaches were introduced to Periana about 200 years ago by a local man who had brought some shoots back from his visit to Argentina. Once planted the orchards quickly multiplied thanks to the mild weather and fertile soil. Since around 1970, after growing methods were perfected, over 4 million kilos a year have been harvested and this succulent fruit has made Periana famous. The village is also famous for producing its local verdial olive oil. The Sociedad Cooperativa Olivarera San Isidro is where the olives are pressed to make the strong and fruity, subtly yellow oil that people come from far and

A good time to visit Periana, if you love peaches, is during the Peach festival in June when an annual completion amongst chefs discovers the varied culinary dishes where peaches take pride of place! Or if Olive Oil is your pleasure don´t miss the Verdial Oil Day in April where this golden liquid is celebrated as it was by the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Nasrids. You can taste the oil whilst listening to pandas de verdiales. One cannot leave the village without a visit to the Church of San Isidro which dominates the skyline and can be seen from many rooftops. It was built after the 1884 earthquake and there is a marble plaque telling the story of this horrendous time when at 9pm on Christmas Day 106 villages were destroyed, 1,253 people were seriously injured and 736 people died. All the roads were blocked by snow making help difficult, but King Alfonso XII raised 6,455,097 pesetas to repair and rebuild homes and in the new Periana this parish church emerged in the Plaza Alfonso XII. However, bright, shiny and new then, this church with its Mudejar interior, single nave and two aisles, separated by pointed arches, is now in need of more funds to renovate and keep it in good repair. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the village which also boast a helicopter landing pad! Just down the road are the Vilo thermal baths where the temperature remains a constant 21 degrees all year round, just the place to visit on a cold winters day!

Asbestos - Have You Been In Contact?
In this edition, I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask!

I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960’s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago.
Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.
I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. Cooking Lesson I went along to a special cookery masterclass from one of the members of the Colmenar Social Club, Brian, a self taught chef who run various hotel kitchens. It was a good turn out with at least 30 people attending. Brian was to show his take on the classic Prawn Cocktail (60’s stylie) and 2 different ways to have mussels. Prawn Cocktail - First of all, he prepared the prawns, using large ones in their shell and showed us all how to remove the poo tract, the long black line along the prawns back! For the sauce he mixed mayonnaise, tomato puree, Worchester sauce, pepper and a glug of brandy which was a surprise!!. For the crunchy bit he used little gem lettuce (any crispy lettuce will do) chopped cucumber & apple. As you can see it looks delicious and it certainly tasted great!
Mussels - Brian had two variations, live ones in the shell and frozen prepared ones. The live ones are soaked overnight in water and oddly, a little cornflour, to remove the grit. For the sauce, garlic, onions, skinned tomatoes, oil, pepper, (no salt as the mussels are salty enough), brandy, white wine and cream. Mix it all together, bring to the boil and simply add the rinsed mussels and after a couple of minutes hey presto beautiful moules marinara!!! For the prepared mussels, simply mix onions, tomatoes, cream, wine and brandy with the muswarm and sels through. Both variations were very nice indeed! This was just one event that the club put on with many more in the pipeline, including Brian’s take on ‘Can’t cook won’t cook’. Harry & Bess Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri. His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there. When he retired from office in 1952 his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year. After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them. When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale." Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise." As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food. Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale. Recipes Of The Month - Decadent Fudge Brownies This month I have devoted my recipes to all you chocolate lovers out there – these are truely a chocoholics dream come true. You may prefer a dark chocolate traditional brownie or an alternative white chocolate delight known as a blondie. On the other hand you may like the sound of both the blondies and brownies, in that case have a go at the two recipes, they are relatively easy and straight forward...Once you have made either of these, you will be addicted!
2) Melt white chocolate and butter in a basin over a pan of hot water, stir well 3) Remove chocolate from heat and add the sugar, then the eggs, then the flour. 4) A liitle ‘optional’ extra at this stage. In this recipe I added macademia nuts but raspberries also work well. 5) Pour into the baking tin. 6) Bake close to the top of the oven for 30 mins. For a softer gooey centre remove from the oven 5 mins earlier. 7) Remove from oven, place on a cooling rack and allow to cool before cutting into squares. Serving Suggestions: Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds, remove and add ice cream or cream to serve. Good luck and Enjoy... Sue x

For a softer gooey centre remove from the oven 5 mins earlier. 9) Remove from oven, place on a cooling rack and allow to cool before cutting into squares. Helping Axarquia Banks to report on account holders’ tax residency within 90 days. A decree to increase tax control over current accounts and fight against international tax avoidance has been adopted. The new legislation forces banks to identify account holders’ tax residency. They must also report on bank deposits, marketable securities, investment fund shares, insurances or incomes, including data concerning balances and amounts received from incomes or transfers. This information will be communicated to the Tax Authority and will be annually and automatically exchanged with the country where account holders are resident for tax purposes. This Royal Decree will enable Spain to comply with the commitments of the multilateral agreement on the automatic exchange of information concerning financial accounts. This has been signed by 51 countries, including Spain. Accounts will be blocked if account holders do not provide the aforementioned information within 90 days.

Once called the “gift of the gods” by Homer, author of the Odyssey, pears are packed with nutrients, fibre and antioxidants, making them a delicious but healthy snacking choice. Check out these health benefits of pears for more good reasons to indulge in this sweet fruit. Pears are naturally high in vitamins C and K, as well as nutrients such as copper—all of which act as antioxidants to protect our cells from damage from free radicals. One pear contains up to 11 percent of our daily recommended intake of vitamin C and 9.5 percent of our daily recommended intake of copper. Pears are also said to have more nutrients per calorie than calorie per nutrient.
Consuming pears may also help with weight loss and reduce the risk of developing hypertension and heart disease, in accordance with an overall healthy diet. Along with apples, pears are part of the rose family and, like apples, many of the health benefits of pears can be found in the fruit’s skin— meaning for maximum health benefits, eat pears with the skin left on. The typical pear season runs from August to October, but with so many varieties of pear, you’re likely to find some variety in season where you are. Pears ripen from the inside out, so to tell if your pear is ready to eat or not, check the neck (skinniest part of the pear) by applying gentle pressure.
Pears are an excellent source of dietary fibre, and fibre is good for the heart. Studies have shown that fibre can lower levels of bad cholesterol by binding to bile salts—which are made from cholesterol—and carrying them out of the body. Eating pears can also reduce risk of stroke by up to 50 per cent. Pears can also protect us from varying types of cancer. In addition to binding to cholesterol, the fibre in pears can also bind to – and help remove – cancer-causing chemicals in the colon, thus reducing risk of colon cancer. Studies have also shown that eating fibre-rich fruits such as pears can reduce risk of breast cancer by 34 per cent in post-menopausal women. Although few studies have been done on the subject, doctors generally consider pears to be a hypo-allergenic fruit because they are less likely than other fruits to produce an allergic response when eaten. For this reason, pears are generally considered “safe” and are often one of the first fruits given to infants. Because they are high in fibre and have a low glycaemic index, pears make a smart snack for those with diabetes. The bloodstream slowly absorbs a pear’s carbs (just about 26 grams per pear), preventing a spike in blood sugar and helping to control blood glucose levels. Pears can also satisfy the sweet tooth in a healthier way than other sweets.

People Who Come And Go Gary and Dawn, Viñuela Ten years is a long time. You can do a lot of things in ten years!! But Gary and Dawn have spent ten whole years looking for their ideal little house in Spain – and now they have finally found it and as of mid June, became the excited, emotional and proud owners, at last, of a little piece of Andalusia! I asked them why it had taken so long and what made them choose this one, in Cortijo Romero. “ We knew the area, and we finally chose this house because the place was a perfect size for us, the price was excellent and we had the views we wanted. We wanted a pool but not the hassle of its upkeep and this house shares one with the very friendly neighbourhood community, so that was just perfect!” The house is terraced, with a spacious main living/dining kitchen area, two double bedrooms and a bathroom, and a lovely terrace.
After all that time, Gary and Dawn were surprised at the actual buying experience, as signing at a notary office was quite different from anything they were used to! “It is so different from in the UK,” Gary explains, “ as at home you only deal with your solicitor and everything is distant. Here you are in the thick of it! You get to know the vendors, you exchange anecdotes, and you get to all sign together, hand over the cheque and receive the key! It just seemed easier, more straight forward. The language was a big issue for us, but everyone involved made the whole process easy.” With the recent uncertainty of the fluctuating pound, Gary and Dawn took the wise precaution of fixing the exchange rate as soon as they had reached a deal and that helped them achieve a smooth and worry-free purchase. For Gary and Dawn, their new house will one day be their permanent home, but for now they will be having fun repainting, finding furniture, and making their own mark on their new house in the sun! They are most easily identified by their flattened broad heads and the long whisker-like barbels that protrude from the mouth of the catfish. The long barbels of the catfish contain their taste buds – they have over 27,000, compared to humans who only have around 7,000. These tastebuds are often most commonly used for smelling – and therefore sensing – what is around to eat, and also what to hide from in the surrounding waters. Not all catfish species have prominent whisker-like barbels.
There are nearly 3,000 known species of catfish in the world but it is thought that the actual number could be as high as 4,500, as many species are found in areas where there is little or no human contact. Although catfish can generally be found in faster-flowing rivers and streams, some catfish species have adapted to living in shallow saltwater environments while others live their lives in caves underground. They can range in size from just a centimetre in length to more than two metres long. The average catfish is around a metre in length, or slightly less depending on the species. The largest species of catfish is the Mekong catfish, which is found inhabiting parts of the Mekong river that flows through Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Jimmy Beans - American Diner Now being a bit of a big eater, oh all right a bit of a pig, one of my favourite cuisines is American food, so when Jimmy Beans in Venta Baja, Puente don Manuel, opened their door, I just had to visit! So on one Sunday night, I took the missus and kids to sample their delights, I wasn’t to be disappointed! Inside there was a nice bit of US memorabilia including a Wurlitzer juke box, pictures of film stars, old vinyl 45’s, licence plates, etc. you get the drift. There is a little play area outside for the little kiddies and an adjoining Sports bar with pool table and dart boards. We ordered the Potato Boats, potato skins filled with bacon and cheese and the spicy Louisiana Chicken Wings to start, yummy!!
For the mains, the children ordered from the ‘kids menu’ – Leoni, the 8 year old had the Hot Dog and Charli, 11, had the Chicken Fingers. Both meals came with a choice of side, both had coleslaw, fries and a Shake. The Dog must have been at least 9” long, a meal in itself!
The missus ordered the Southern Fried Chicken and I had the Ribs. Both came with Fries and Coleslaw. There were two good sized racks of ribs smothered in sticky bbq sauce and with Chimichanga on the side. They were cooked to perfection and tasted sublime!! The quote of the day came from Charli, when she said as she was tucking into the sticky Chicken Fingers, “This is like a dream come true for you and me Dad isn’t it?” Indeed it was, as she eats well like a chip off the ol’ block, absolutely gorgeous!! They do a few desserts, but you can’t go to an American Diner and not have a Shake can you? I had Vanilla and the kids, Chocolate. Proper shakes as you can see from the picture. Leoni said, “I don’t want mine, cause it’s look too good to eat!”
Jimmy and Katie are the owners and they have been open for just a couple of months. They are a lovely couple and I’m sure, based on the quality of the food we were served, they will be very successful with this venture. As usual, we put it off as long as possible before we turn on our air con in the car. When we do, it doesn’t feel that cold. This was exactly the case with my a/c, it seemed it wasn’t working very well. So I decided to call Mike from AutoCool and a time was arranged and refreshingly he was there on the dot and he got to work straight away! Mike went through what was going to happen step by step. The initial temperature that my car was chucking out was 10.40, quite good I thought until Mike reckoned on it being 5ish, Wow!! After carrying out some visible checks, Mike then cracked on. He connected up his equipment & measured the bar pressure of my system - 45 psi which is quite low, should be about 90 psi. The next stage was to remove the old gas, which is quite dangerous as it could give you a nasty freeze burn and is not very nice for the atmosphere if it escaped, then vacuum the system. This is the most important part of the service. This procedure vacuums the system to minus pressure to remove all remaining moisture, which does the damage. Fresh gas is then introduced and Mike added some compressor oil with some UV dye, to lubricate the seals and to pinpoint any leaks that may occur in the years to come. After some final checks, Mike was finished and we both sat in the car to take the temperature again. Amazingly it was now pumping out just over 5oc, my car was freezing. In all, Mike was here just under an hour and was thoroughly efficient and professional. This service is a must. I have a 10 year old car and

Mike tells me that he also offers a different service to car owners in the Costa del Sol. In his travels repairing car aircon systems he noticed that a large number of car headlights had been badly affected by the UV rays of the sun. A lot of car headlights are now made using polycarbonate or other plastic compounds and as a result of exposure to the sun these headlights are badly affected, making them yellow and opaque. Not only is this dangerous, cutting down their effectiveness by up to 85% but it is now classified as a FAIL POINT in the current ITV test. Help is on hand as Mike has invested in professional equipment that can restore headlights and rear light lenses to virtually as new condition leaving a bright, clear finish with protection against the sun’s UV rays. La Vaqueria Celebrating 10 Years La Vaqueria was the village dairy of Benamargosa, a big old shed with ramshackle lean tos and all the useful old rubbish that farmers (well all of us actually) collect because it may come in useful one day! Love at first sight – what a great space, what an art studio it would make The building had no windows, just some big old metal doors and shutters with only a tiny little corner rendered and whitewashed where Maria used to sit with a milk churn ladeling out the fresh milk to her customers. Many villagers remember being sent here as children to have their little galvanised churns filled. Although the cows had moved the building came with chickens, rabbits, two very large toads, a whole collection of snakes and a host of cockroaches which raced for the campo through the holes in the brickwork as soon as the mangers were demolished. The noise of them scurrying away was incredible, there were that many! At the beginning of a recession, a single Mum with 3 school age children, I opened for business in one room which was rendered and had a tiled floor. Where we have our art lessons now was full of straw, the horse lived where we now have a mosaic workshop, some floors were still dirt, it was still un-rendered and there was no garden. The following year the Arroyo was dug up to put in drainage tubes which took a couple of years to complete; so there we were, new business up a back street with no passing trade and no access!! During the last 10 years with lots of support from friends, neighbours and family I have gradually transformed the place into a welcoming arts and crafts centre and restaurant with a beautiful patio, a cool refreshing garden with an ecological vegetable garden providing some of the ingredients which we serve. The studio is now well equipped with everything I need for myself and classes. I can paint to my hearts’ content, mostly in acrylics doing many commissions on canvas but also decorating and making many of the items we sell in the shop. Any surface is suitable to be covered with canal boat style decoration, handmade cards, homemade jewellery, all sorts of little handmade nick nacks, glass and mosaic garden accessories and my latest passion‌hand painted pebbles! Recently my eldest daughter has started working here too so in celebration of our achievement we will now be OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK starting from Sunday July 3rd when we have our birthday buffet celebration with all of our usual homemade dishes + lots lots more + live music by SOUTHBOUND. It’s A Dog’s Life For AAR Volunteers! A passion for animals, especially dogs and cats, is what drives the volunteer network behind Axarquia Animal Rescue Run entirely by volunteers, the animal rescue charity depends upon more than the love of man’s best friends. A wide range of skills coupled with dedication are needed to drive forward the voluntary organisation to improve the lives of those insentient beings who drew a short straw on life. There is an ongoing battle to attract funding to pay the ever-increasing costs arising from the plethora of abandoned and abused animals that beset the charity on a daily basis. Without volunteers, there would be no foundation to provide help for those animals, or support needed for fundraising efforts. Volunteers draw on their creativity and skills for ideas to raise funds for AAR so that more help can be given to the unfortunate animals. This involves them giving up some of their spare time whether it is baking or making items to sell at a stall on a one-off event, or utilising a range of skills for the ongoing operation of the charity’s market stalls, charity shop or Facebook and web sites.
It is the creativity of volunteers that has resulted in extending the provision aimed at improving animal welfare in the Axarquia region. These include improving the lives of the Periana feral cats, spaying and neutering through a Trap, Neuter and Return programme or plans to introduce an education campaign in schools. The AAR team recently drew upon their creative resources to produce a new website that would not only advertise the animals they have available for adoption, but inform the public on the charity’s work. They also wanted to provide information and advice on a range of subjects involving pet health and welfare. This was a mammoth task for volunteers to take on. However, with the tightest of deadlines the volunteers created and designed the site and information needed for the website drafted, edited and produced. One can only imagine the effort that was put into the content for the site and there must have been a considerable amount of burning the midnight oil to meet deadlines. The website was launched in June and is now available at www.axarquiaanimalrescue.com. Volunteers are always needed by AAR who are grateful for any help offered.
