m Fro Ed... the

Welcome to the June edition of ‘the little mag that fits in your bag for info on the go,’ whether you are lucky enough to be in sunny Axarquia because you are a resident here, or perhaps you are just visiting and on holiday. We truly wish you all a great summer!

Inside this magazine you will find many local businesses advertising their wares — everything from bars and restaurants, salons and shops, legal services and estate agents who are available for viewings if you get the urge to make this your permanent home. There is also a local waterpark in Torre del Mar called Aquavelis where you can have a splashing family fun day out, although it’s not advertised in this edition, it re-opens on 26th June, and then there are some great boat trips too. Make the most of your summer holiday and carry this little magazine with you in your bag; flick through it so you don’t miss out on anything, and if — and when! — you do happen to use any of our advertisers’ services, please let them know you saw them in The Sentinella.

Last month I advertised that the new Sentinella website was live, but unfortunately we had a few technical hitches and we had to put the site into maintenance mode for a short period of time. As we go to press, we are hoping that the site will be ready for action again any day soon. Obviously we are really sorry for any inconvenience caused, but we are pleased to say the new site is much more user-friendly. WWW.THESENTINELLA.COM

Strange News

This month will see the long-awaited and delayed Euro 2020 — now 2021 — football tournament. In this competition we have our home nations England and Wales — and at last Scotland, who are in this tournament for the first time since 1998. So yet again, let us believe that one of these can win the trophy — or indeed our adopted country, Spain! Keep track of all the finals by using our great wall chart on pages 42 and 43. Have a fantastic first month of the long-awaited summer — it’s certainly been a while coming this year!

Golden oldies A teenage girl accidentally found she had moved into a retirement village after signing her tenancy agreement before viewing the property. Madison Kohout, 19, was left totally confused when all her neighbours appeared to be over the age of 65 after she moved into a flat in Arkansas. A week later, she stumbled across a sign that explained everything – she is living in a community of pensioners. The nursing assistant, who had moved there from Oklahoma, filmed herself covering her face in embarrassment as she stood next to a ‘Senior Citizens Apartments’ sign. However, while other teens may crave neighbours their own age, Madison is loving her new neighbourhood as she gets ‘to have extra sets of grandparents’. In a video update, she said: ‘How is life at the old folks’ home you might ask? Let me show you. When I get home it’s usually always super-quiet, because most of my neighbours are asleep by the time I get home. “But one major perk is that I can play music whenever I want to, because some of them can’t hear.’ Harry’s new job Prince Harry has a new job as ‘Chief Impact Officer’ at a mental health start-up in California, a position known as a ‘chimpo’ in business circles. It’s getting attention for all the wrong reasons in Japan. That’s because the word is slang for ‘penis’. Japanese news site SoraNews24 reported that people were laughing at the job title, saying things like ‘I bet this news made junior high school boys happy’ and ‘It doesn’t matter what age you are, the word ‘chimpo’ always raises a smile’. The title isn’t just specific to him, as many companies will have a chimpo. After the move was announced, Harry told the Wall Street Journal he wanted to use the role to ‘create impact in people’s lives’.

Strange News (Continued)

Wedding squat Friends and family of Shenita Jones and Courtney Wilson were thrilled when they were invited to their ‘dream home’ to watch them get married. Guests were invited to spend the weekend at the $5.7million (£4million) estate with 7.2 acres, in Southwest Ranches, Florida. The couple even called it the ‘The Wilsons’ Estate’ on invitations, but there was just one tiny snag. The home wasn’t theirs, they hadn’t even hired it, and the real owner knew nothing about their plan until he showed up on the Saturday morning, when they were meant to tie the knot. A stunned Nathan Finkel called 911 and said there were people trespassing at his property. He said they were ‘harassing’ him and telling him it was ‘God’s message’ that they should get married at his home. Two police officers arrived at the scene and told Mr Wilson to leave ‘and not to come back,’ Mr Finkel told the Sun Sentinel. No charges were brought against the couple, and when approached by reporters, Mr Wilson

said: ‘I don’t want to talk about it’. Mr Wilson allegedly posed as a prospective buyer and visited the home multiple times several months before the ceremony.

Duke believed in UFOs Bird-watching, painting, naval history and polo were just some of the Duke of Edinburgh’s eclectic range of interests and hobbies. Prince Philip certainly liked to keep himself busy, but watching out for UFOs might not be the first thing you’d expect him to be into. However it turns out the Duke was fascinated with close encounters and had amassed a sizeable collection of books on the subject. He was a regular subscriber to Flying Saucer Review and had given his former assistant Sir Peter Horsley ‘carte blanche’ to collect stories about UFOs from the RAF. In his autobiography, Sounds from Another Room, Sir Peter, who served as the Duke’s equerry from 1949 to 1956, says he was asked to bring witnesses to Buckingham Palace for private discussions.

What’s New This Month

It’s been a tough year so far and some businesses have waited to commence their advertising with us again. This month we are very happy to welcome them back and wish them lots of success over the coming summer months.

Firstly, Bar Italia, a quaint Italian restaurant on the Thursday market street, Avenida Duque de Ahumada, no. 7. Inside this restaurant it has a special country feel about it, cosy and friendly atmostphere. They provide wonderful service and the pizzas, pastas, salads etc.. are all homemade and extremely tasty. With many Italian restaurants in Torre del Mar this is definitely a less cafe styled layout and is a perfect location for a romantic meal or two or a small family gathering. Open daily, closed Sunday. See main advert on page 113 Next for us to welcome back is Clinica Europa a multidisciplinary medical centre owned by Dr. Carlos, in Torrox Costa. Here they will take care of your health in the broadest concept, as defined by the World

Health Organisation. They have so many services on offer and all under the one roof including; Pyhsiotherapy, cardiology, acupuncture, odontology, geriatrics, blood tests, psychology, urology, pediatrics, general surgery, family medicine and asetetic medicine. They have professionals who speak; English, Spanish, German and French. See main advert on page 40

And finally, in June we welcome back Sail’n’play. It’s summer and we all have to fit in at least one boat trip, it would be a crime not to. With many boats to choose from, ‘Sailnplay’ are based on the Marina del Este in La Herradura. read their article on page 62 and see their boats on pages 23 and 63  If you have a business in the Axarquia region and would like to promote it so it’s in the hands of our readers, contact us on 664 210 468 or email: sales@thesentinella.com We look forward to promoting and distributing your advert throughout Axarquia!

THE rIGHT CAr INSUrANCE

Linea Directa

BACK ON THE rOAD As Spain eases restrictions due to Covid, many drivers are looking to get their car back on the road. But before turning the key we recommend you check your vehicle is good to go. Fluid levels may have dropped. Check your oil, windscreen wash and coolant. Before checking the brake fluid, drive your vehicle for a short period, braking several times to fill the system. Top up with more brake fluid if the level is below the minimum. If the battery is flat you may need to jump start your car. Once running keep it turning over for 20 minutes. Check tyre pressures and any abnormal wear and damage. Take your vehicle for a drive and listen to the engine sound for any grinding, grumbling, whining or knocking. BASIC INSUrANCE Shop around for car insurance and find out what’s included. Does your insurance company have a national network of repairers that can collect your vehicle, undertake repairs and then return the car to you on completion? How does your No Claim discount work? If no claim is made against your policy, your renewal premium will be adjusted accordingly. If a claim is made, then your No Claims discount may be reduced. Línea Directa’s team of customer service experts can guide you through all your queries and provide clear answers.

OpTIONAL EXTrAS Travel Assistance from Línea Directa provides extra protection when you need it most. On-the-spot emergency repairs will be carried out on the vehicle if it is immobilised. If you run out of fuel, then your vehicle will be towed to the nearest petrol station. In the event of loss or theft of the vehicle’s keys, then Línea Directa will do everything in its power to obtain duplicates and dispatch them as quickly as possible to you.

Dementia – one couple's story

The Circle Of Life

In the beginning, in their carefree 20s, John and Jane (not their real names) would finish each other’s sentences. They married, and had two children. After a career in the Forces, they retired to sunny Spain when John was 55.

John wasn’t a ‘party animal’ by any means, but he did have a consistently high alcohol intake which increased as the temperature rose. He seemed to be ‘normal’ but stage ONE dementia was lurking there.

Jane noticed that John was a bit forgetful — but aren’t we all? — and that marked the onset of stage TWO.

Looking back, Jane recognised the THIRD stage. John would constantly misplace his keys or his phone, and miss appointments. She would laugh about him “getting old.” If she had realised at the time, she could have used an appointment calendar and put up a special hook for his keys — organisation and routine are very helpful throughout the dementia journey.

Then, some six or seven months later, John couldn't remember whether or not he had eaten breakfast. Once the financial manager in the home, he now couldn’t pay the bills. A mini mental test with the GP and a brain scan indicated FOURTH stage dementia. The balance of the household changed as Jane took over more of the non-domestic roles. Over the next couple of years, John became angry, frustrated and aggressive at times.

Although John could still dress himself, sometimes, he got it wrong. If only someone had told Jane at the time, she could have put his clothes on a hanger to save him frustration, and also put up a few ‘memory aid notices’. Jane got into the habit of locking the door because John had gone out and wandered off a couple of times. This was the FIFTH stage.

Another 18 months down the line, John’s decline has become more severe. He can no longer wash himself, and he is incontinent at times. This is the SIXTH stage and Jane feels that she has a six-foot toddler, complete with anger issues such as pent-up aggression. At this point, John still remembers family and friends and he can recall past events — however he struggles to remember what he had for lunch.

Many people don’t reach stage SEVEN, when John may not recognise his wife, he will require feeding — finding it difficult to swallow in the later stages — and he will need a modified diet. He may require a hospital bed, and will need 24-hour care.

The keys to survival are ROUTINE, REST and SUPPORT.

Financial benefits can be accessed to pay towards official care — even in Spain. There is a possibility of some funding through the Forces, and there are also Facebook support groups.

How Times Change

Comments made in the year 1955

"I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for €20."

"Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before €2,000 will only buy a used one." "If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. 50c a pack is ridiculous." "Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a 10c just to mail a letter?" "If they raise the minimum wage to €1, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store."

"When I first started driving, who would have thought petrol would someday cost 15 cents a litre. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage."

37

"Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail haircuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls."

"I'm afraid to send my kids to the cinema any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying 'damn' in 'Gone with the Wind,' it seems every new movie has either "hell" or "damn" in it. "I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas."

"Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the president."

"I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now."

Out And About In Torrox

Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

Torrox pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world. Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc.

The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live. Shop Local - Support Your Local Community

True Story

Is it you? Outside Bristol zoo there is a car park for 150 cars and 8 coaches. There also used to be a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars £1 and coaches £5. This parking attendant worked there for all of 25 years, then one day he just didn't turn up for work... "Ho hum" said Bristol zoo management "Better phone up the City Council and get them to send a new parking attendant" "Err no", said the Council, "That car park is your responsibility"... "Err no", said Bristol zoo management, "The attendant was employed by the City Council, wasn't he?"..... "Err NO!" Sitting in his villa in Spain is a bloke, who had been taking daily the car park fees, amounting to an estimated £400 per day at Bristol Zoo for the last 25 years... totalling £3,650,000!!!

Old Age

The secret to old age A doctor on his morning walk, noticed an older lady sitting on her front step smoking a cigar, so he walked up to her and said, "I couldn't help but notice how happy you look! What is your secret?" "I smoke ten cigars a day," she said. "Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint. Apart from that, I drink a whole bottle of Jack Daniels every week, and eat only junk food. On weekends, I pop pills, get laid, and don't exercise at all." "That is absolutely amazing! How old are you?" “34” she replied!

Halting erosion using Vetiver from VetiverSpain

Vetiver is a non-invasive clumping grass that grows rapidly to about 2 metres tall. Vetiver is used mostly to fight erosion, preserve top soil and clean contaminated water. Vetiver can be cutback a few times a year so the cuttings can be used as a beneficial mulch and a nutritious feed for farm animals. Located in Sayalonga at an elevation of 500 metres we plant all year round but Spring planting gets the best results. Vetiver loves the heat of summer to get established faster. Mad Eh?!

Inner Peace

Have a go at this ?!?!?!?!?!? 3 men go into a hotel. The man behind the desk said the room is €30. So each man paid 10€ and went to the room. A while later the man behind the desk realised the room was only 25€. So he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys’ room with 5€. On the way the bellboy couldn’t figure out how to split 5€ evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a 1€ and kept the other 2€ for himself. This meant that the 3 men each paid 9€ for the room, which is a total of 27€, add the 2€ that the bellboy kept = 29€ Where is the other euro? Answer on page 99  MODERN

I have finally found inner peace by following the simple advice I heard on a Medical TV show.

A Doctor proclaimed the way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started. So I looked around my house to see things I'd started and hadn't finished and, before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a bottle of Merlot, a bottle of shhhardonay, a bodle of Baileys, a butle of vocka, a pockage of Prunglies, thamainder of botProzic and Valumscriptins, the res of the Chesesckean a box a chocolets. Reasons To Advertise

Don’t be the one to miss out on some potential business during these tougher times.

1. Customers Forget. We the customers forget without constant reminders. Each day a customer doesn’t hear about your company is one more day they start hearing about your competitor. 2. Name recognition. When a customer thinks of a product who do you want them to think of? It’s pretty hard for them to immediately think of you if they don’t see your name anywhere.

3. people often take their time when buying. I often use a laptop when I could travel around and the time is coming for a new one. So I’ll be shopping for that. Am I going to buy it tomorrow? Probably not. I’ll start looking out for the ads, studying the available brands and assembling the features I need. I might not make the purchase for several months but when I do I will probably have a dealer in mind and they will get a shot at my business.

4. Customers move. Studies show that 25% of your customers will move each year, this means there is a 25% of potential new customers arriving too.

5. A portion of the market is always shopping. Did you notice the tyre ads in the paper today? If you need tyres you probably did. If not you probably didn’t give them a second glance. Not everyone is your customer every day. But each and every day there is a portion of the population that is looking for your product. And you need to be there when they are ready to start looking for that product. COvID Advertising Companies willing to raise their voices and continue advertising their wares in a depressed economy “will not only consolidate their existing position but will likely achieve a

degree of dominance when the marketplace makes its inevitable recovery.” While consumers may stop buying during this uncertain time, it doesn’t mean they stop listening and reading. But if you keep your cool and maintain your advertising presence, when your competitors withdraw their voices from the market place your voice will be heard all the louder. We will get through this together, those advertisers that continued with us throughout the recession in 2007/2008, 80% are still advertising with us today!

Boat Trips From The Marina Del Este, La Herradura

Top luxury sailing charter operator on the Axarquia/Costa Tropical ‘Sailnplay’ are ready and waiting to welcome you on one of their great boat trips this summer.

Operating since 2008 (last year was their 13th year…….arrrgghhh, you may have guessed something would go wrong!!), the only complaint has been about the drive down to the Marina and the nightmare of parking in the summer months. So, now, new for 2021 they are offering minibus transfers for guests from all over the area. And it also means everyone in your party can enjoy a few drinks onboard without worry! So, treat yourself with a half day out (4 hours) of unlimited drinks and a full sumptuous buffet meal on a luxurious motor yacht, the Charlie Ruggle, ideal for family celebrations. If you prefer a sailing yacht, then the ever-favourite catamaran trips are still going strong since 2008, and the minimum group size for a private charter has been reduced down from 8 to only 6 guests on all the four hour trips so that your group can relax safe in the knowledge that the correct precautions have been taken for your well being and safety post-covid. The catamaran trips are 90€ and the top of the range motor yacht 120€ per person (both half price for children). Spoil yourselves as you enjoy complimentary drinks throughout, and a magnificent buffet meal served by an ever-attentive crew as you glory in the beauty of the stunning coastline on board your very own luxury powerboat or catamaran yacht, at a mere fraction of the cost of actually owning one. Visit unspoilt and otherwise inaccessible coves and bays, see dolphins close up, and really live the dream for you and up to 6-12 guests for your special occasion. Breakfast, lunch, and sunset dinner trips are all available for summer 2021. Visit the website on www.sailnplay.com now for full details (or see the advert opposite).

All precautions following Covid-19 have been taken, and all guests will be asked to report to the office at the entrance to the marina first where you and your party will have your temperatures taken, and where masks and hand gel will be available for those who don’t supply their own. The office also sells essentials such as sun creams, hats, flip-flops, sunglasses and towels. All the boats

have large sundecks where social distancing is not a problem.

Planning a party this summer or next year in 2022? Then talk to Mike on 669 118 816 as the yachts are the perfect venue for your hen, stag, wedding, birthday, anniversary, or any other special event. With Bluetooth music connectivity onboard, superb catering and additional watersports on offer, this option is very popular, particularly as Sailnplay will charter in several other yachts for special events giving a whopping capacity of up to 50 guests, all sailing at the same time and anchoring up together for a whale of a time. For sailing times visit www.sailnplay.com and for contact information see the advert opposite. Sailnplay also rent out kayaks and paddleboards for use on the nearby Marina Bay or Hidden Beach, (both only a few minutes away).

And finally, Sailnplay are again offering their full range of RIBS, speedboats and powerboats for hire (some with no boat licence required!) from just €175 for half a day. Check all this out on their website www.sailnplay.com, give Mike a ring on 669 118 816, or pop into the office at the marina entrance.

Looks like there will be something for everybody down at Marina del Este this summer and in spite of the horrible and unusual events of late, Sailnplay promise that your visit to Marina del Este will be the highlight of your holiday.

Cyclists

Love them or hate them

63

A cyclist is a disaster for a country's economy. He does not buy a car and does not take out a car loan. Does not buy car insurance. Does not buy fuel. Does not send his car for servicing and repairs. Does not pay for parking. Does not become obese. Yes - and he stays well, damn it!! Healthy people are not needed for an economy. They do not buy drugs. They do not go to hospitals and doctors. They take too long to die, depriving funeral homes of high coffin charges. They add nothing to a country's GDP. On the contrary, every new McDonald's outlet creates at least 30 jobs: 10 cardiologists, 10 dentists, 10 weight-loss experts apart from the people working in the McDonald's outlet. Walking is even worse.

These people don't even buy a bicycle!!

Los Naranjos Bar Restaurant In Alcaucin

Alcaucín, situated in the foothills of Sierra Tejeda Mountains, is home to the superbly located restaurant, Los Naranjos, which has the most wonderful terrace overlooking the magnificent countryside, making it a location everyone must visit at least once! Owners Hilde and Manolo run the restaurant everyday with help from their staff on their busy ‘live music’ days. They close on Wednesday’s for a well earned rest.

The kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8am until midnight, then from midnight through to 2am for drinks. They have something for everyone including, meats, fish, salads and a pasta/vegetarian dish on offer too. On Saturday’s at noon they serve a very tasty paella plus they have a menu del dia on offer too. Their speciality dishes are goat and lamb, and I have to say the leg of lamb is super delicious and comes with plenty of mint sauce. The dishes in my opinion are large and beautifully presented. The terrace is spectacular with wonderful views and on a clear day also has a view of Lake Vinuela!

Now the nice weather has arrived this really is a fabulous location to sit and relax with a nice glass of vino or two after a hard day at work, or for many of us a busy week at work! Los Naranjos views will be sure to relax you.

Weekends are a busy time at Los Naranjos during the summer, particularly because the location is so nice to spend an afternoon of eating, drinking and listening to their live music. It is essential to reserve a table to avoid being disappointed. Live music coming up in June is; Sunday 6th June and Saturday 19th and in July; Sunday 4th and Sunday 18th. Live music with Miguel Botana. Hilde has recently organised a market to be held on the terrace, market days in June are; Friday 4th and 18th and in July are; Friday

2nd, 16th and 30th. If you would like to book a stall please call 951 041 535. Hilde and Manolo look forward to welcoming you. See main advert on page 20

Mezquitilla, Lagos and El Morche: Casual And Quirky Beach Locations

Mezquitilla, Lagos and El Morche lie 40km from Malaga with an efficient coastal bus route that links the city with these small beach communities. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline which has been attracting more tourism due to its tranquility and unspoilt nature.

Mezquitilla The dark gravel and sand beach is the distinct feature of this stretch of coastline. The beach at Mezquitilla is around 650m long, stretching into Algarrobo Costa and about 20m wide. It is a great place to spend the day with the family. The sea here is calm and the parking free along the coastal highway. It is also a wheelchair accessible beach and offers amenities such as sunbed hire and beach umbrellas. With a restaurant right by the sea, it is definitely a great place to relax. Restaurant La Viuda is an elegant and stylish place offering an excellent choice of fresh fish and locally caught specialties. There is a terrace with unrivalled views of the sea and, in summer, there is often live entertainment that adds to the atmosphere.

El Morche As Mezquitilla is attached to the municipality of Algarrobo, so El Morche connects to Torrox municipality. Its large and has a wide beach with around 1200 metres in length and has a width of 50m. This expanse is mainly composed of fine dark sand and the calm sea makes it a great place for paddling. This, in turn, makes it the ideal place for families to relax. In summer, this is a very popular beach with locals from the nearby towns as well as those from further afield in Andalucia. It has a range of amenities: sunbeds, hammocks and parasol hire, good parking, a range of restaurants and chirunguitos as well as being accessible for visitors with disabilities. There is a hotel, Hotel Costamar, directly positioned by the beach which offers both double rooms as well as small apartments. For a different eating out option, it’s worthwhile visiting the Bio Beach Club, set on the beach and offers an interesting International menu, excellent cocktails as well as live entertainment throughout the year. (see main advert on page 48)

Whilst tourism has replaced the traditional fishing and farming as the main source of Lagos income in these small communities, these Just east of Mezquitilla and attached to it by places retain a traditional charm and the wide beach and the scenic coastal road character. They are well worth the stop for N340, is the even smaller settlement of either their fresh fish, delicious meals or quiet Lagos. Here is another seaside location to beaches. enjoy the beach and the beautiful sunrises over the Mediterranean Sea. De Cotta Law

Divorcing in the English courts – De Cotta Law can provide a professional and confidential service to residents of Spain

We are often asked whether a couple can choose to divorce in England or in Spain, and where they will have the greater economic advantage. Although the UK is now outside the scope of EU legislation in both countries it can still be a question of “first come, first served” which means it is important to get the right advice before proceedings are commenced. A lot has been written in the news about wealthy individuals forum shopping – that is looking for the best country to take the action. Where there is considerable wealth this is often thought to be England though where one spouse has private pensions this can be disadvantageous. We have Family law specialists who can commence or defend divorce proceedings in England and you would not have to travel to England until any hearing takes place.

It may be that jurisdictional rules prevent you from commencing the divorce in England or a petition has already been lodged in England by your spouse. A battle over jurisdiction can become very costly and a better route may be to reach a settlement which can deal with Spanish property. However, it is very important to have the English consent order correctly drafted to ensure any Spanish property transfers are not taxed.

If there is a divorce in Spain the door can remain open in England under specific provisions which allow someone to make a financial application in England after a foreign divorce. You have to prove either residence or domicile in England and that the financial matters have not been properly dealt with. There have to be assets in England such as property, monies or pensions.

69

De Cotta Law can also directly instruct a Barrister in England who would be familiar with the decisions being made in the courts of England & Wales, equally in Scotland or Northern Ireland. This can be more cost effective than instructing a firm of solicitors in the UK where fees are generally higher and can rapidly rise if the matter is contentious. As a firm we are registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority so we can act in the English courts.

A pineapple is neither a pine nor an apple, but a tropical fruit consisting of many berries that have grown together.

The Spanish word for pineapple is ‘piña’.

The scientific name of a pineapple is Ananas comosus.

You may have an itchy tongue or sore lips right after you eat pineapple. This is because bromelain breaks down proteins, it can "eat away" at your flesh. For this reason, it's also an ingredient in meat tenderiser. But as soon as you swallow the fruit, your stomach acids destroy the flesh-eating enzyme.

Pineapples regenerate! You can plant pineapple leaves to grow a new plant or slice off the top of a pineapple and plant it in soil.

Pineapples ripen faster upside down.

It can take more than two years for a pineapple plant to produce a single pineapple fruit.

Pineapples are especially rich in vitamin C and manganese, one cup of fresh pineapple chunks has: Calories: 82 grams, Protein: 0.89 grams, Fat: 0.20 grams, Carbohydrates: 22 grams Fibre: 2.3 grams.

A pineapple plant can stay alive and continue giving fruits for up to 50 years. Only one pineapple is produced by a single plant in a single season. The biggest producer of pineapples in the world is South Asia.

The largest pineapple recorded was in 2011 and grown by Christine McCollum from Bakewell Australia. The pineapple was 32cm long, 66cm wide and weighed 28kg.

Retiring?

About two years ago my wife and I were on a cruise through the Western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone by the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room. I also noticed that all the staff, ships of officers, waiters, busboys etc.., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told that she owned the Line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises, back to back. As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, “I understand you’ve been on this for the last four cruises.” She replied, “Yes, that’s true.” I started, “I don’t understand” and she replied, without a pause, “It’s cheaper than a nursing home.” So, there will be no nursing homes in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is £200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long term discount and senior discount price of £135 per day. That leaves £65 a day for: 1) Gratuities which will only be £10 per day. 2) I will have as many as ten meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed everyday of the week). 3) Princess has as many as three swimming pools, workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night. 4) They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo. 5) They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra £5 of tips will have the entire staff scrambling to help you. 6) I will get to meet new people every 7 or 14 days. 7) TV broken? Light bulb needs changing? Need to have a mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and

71

apologise for your inconvenience. 8) Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don’t even have to ask them. 9) If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on the NHS. If you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go so you don’t look for me in a nursing home, find me on a ship.

PS: If you die they toss your body over the side of the boat.

Dust If You Must

Remember, a layer of dust protects the wood beneath it

A house becomes a home when you can write 'I love you' on the furniture.

I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend making sure things were just perfect 'in case someone came over.' Finally I realised one day that no-one came over; they were all out living life and having fun!

NOW, when people visit, I don't have to explain the 'condition' of my home.

They are more interested in hearing about the things I've been doing while I was away living life and having fun. If you haven't figured this out yet, please heed this advice.

Dust if you must,

But the world's out there with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, a flutter of snow, a shower of rain. This day will not come around, again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind, old age will come and it's not kind...

And when you go - and go you must - you, yourself will make more dust!

Random Joke

A woman comes home and tells her husband, 'Remember those headaches I've been having all these years? Well, they're gone.' No more headaches?' the husband asks, ‘What happened?' His wife replies, 'Margie referred me to a hypnotist and he told me to stand in front of a mirror, stare at myself and repeat, 'I do not have a headache' 'I do not have a headache' 'I do not have a headache' ‘Well, it worked! The headaches are all gone.' ‘Well, that is wonderful' proclaims the husband. His wife then says, 'You know, you haven't been exactly a ball of fire in the bedroom these last few years, why don't you go see the hypnotist and see if he can do anything for that?’ Reluctantly, the husband agrees to try it. Following his appointment, the husband comes home, rips off his clothes, picks up his wife and carries her into the bedroom. He puts her on the bed and says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back.'

77

He goes into the bathroom and comes back a few minutes later and jumps into bed and makes passionate love to his wife like never before. His wife says, 'WOW! - that was wonderful!’ The husband says, 'Don't move! I will be right back.’ He goes back into the bathroom, comes back and round two was even better than the first time. The wife sits up and her head is spinning 'OH MY GOD' she proclaims. Her husband again says, 'Don't move, I'll be right back.' With that, he goes back in the bathroom. This time, his wife quietly follows him and there, in the bathroom, she sees him standing at the mirror and saying. ‘She's not my wife' ‘She's not my wife' ‘She's not my wife' . ‘She's not my wife' His funeral service will be held on Saturday.

Before attempting to remove stubborn stains from a garment, always circle the stain in permanent pen, so that when you remove the garment from the washing machine you can easily locate the area of the stain and check that it has gone.

Random Joke

A little girl asks her mum, “Mum, can I take the dog for a walk around the block?” Her mum replies, “No, because she is on heat.” “What does that mean?” asked the child. “Go and ask your father. I think he is in the garage.” The little girl goes out to the garage and says, “Dad, can I take Lulu for a walk around the block? I asked Mum, but she said the dog was on heat, and to come and ask you.” He took a rag, soaked it in petrol, and scrubbed the dog’s backside with it to disguise the scent, and said, “Ok, you can go now, but keep Lulu on the leash and only go one time around the block.” The little girl left and returned a few minutes later with no dog on the leash.. Surprised, Dad asked, “Where’s Lulu?” The little girl said, “She ran out of petrol about halfway round the block, so another dog is pushing her home!”.

Director: Chloé Zhao, rating: R Stars: Frances McDormand, Gay DeForest, Patricia Grier,Linda May How to watch: Stream it on Hulu. Buy it on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play,

This poignant film deservedly swept the board at the recent Oscars, and it is not hard to see why. Nomadland — which won the “Best Film” award and also gave Chloe Zhao the Best Director Oscar — is a Springsteen song in movie form, a beautifully rendered tale of what it means to be disenfranchised in America. Life on the road has never been so tenderly captured, politically alive and profoundly moving. After losing her job in a gypsum mine in Empire, Nevada, having worked there for many years, widowed Fern (Frances

McDormand) puts her life in a small van and travels the American West, working odd jobs and sharing experiences with fellow nomads on the fringes of conventional society.

Fern works any seasonal job she can, be it on a sorting line of an Amazon fulfilment centre, gathering a beet harvest or cleaning the loos at an RV park. But this is the genius of Fern: she is in no way a victim of economic circumstance, looking and taking work wherever she can get it. When she runs into a teenager she once tutored in a sports store, she rejects the offer of a roof over her head, saying: “I’m not homeless, I’m just houseless. Not the same thing, right? Don’t worry about me.” After an employment supervisor tells her she is not suitable for any of the jobs on her books, Fern joins one of the seminar camps of van-dwelling guru Bob Wells, learning the nomadic basics: stealth parking, “how to look after your own sh*t”, and the phrase, “See you down the road,” a less permanent way of saying goodbye. It is in part a “road movie”, which delivers a wonderfully understated performance as a traveller living life on the margins. Frances thoroughly deserved her “Best Actress” Oscar. I Resign

Below is a letter of resignation from an employee at a computer company, to her boss, who apparently resigned very soon afterwards! It’s no wonder!

have friends randomly call you over the next couple of years to keep you honest, because I know you would be unable to do it on your own.

Asking me, a network administrator, to explain every little nuance of everything I do each time you happen to stroll into my office is not only a waste of time, but also a waste of precious oxygen. I was hired because I know how to network computer systems, and you were apparently hired to provide amusement to myself and other employees, who watch you vainly attempt to understand the concept of "cut and paste" for the hundredth time.

3. When you borrowed the digital camera to ‘take pictures of your Mother's birthday,’ you neglected to mention that you were going to take pictures of yourself in the mirror nude. Then you forgot to erase them like the techno-moron you really are. Suffice it to say I have never seen such odd acts with a sauce bottle, but I assure you that those have been copied and kept in safe places pending the authoring of a glowing letter of recommendation. (Try to use a spell check please; I hate having to correct your mistakes.)

Dear Mr. Smith, As a graduate of an institution of higher education, I have a few very basic expectations. Chief among these is that my direct superiors have an intellect that ranges above the common ground squirrel. After your consistent and annoying harassment of my co-workers and me during the commission of our duties, I can only surmise that you are one of the few true genetic wastes of our time.

You will never understand computers. Something as incredibly simple as binary still gives you too many options. You will also never understand why people hate you, but I am going to try and explain it to you, even though I am sure this will be just as effective as telling you what an IP is. Your shiny new iMac has more personality than you ever will. You walk around the building all day, shiftlessly looking for fault in others. You have a sharp dressed useless look about you that may have worked for your interview, but now that you actually have responsibility, you pawn it off on overworked staff, hoping their talent will cover for your glaring ineptitude. In a world of managerial evolution, you are the blue-green algae that everyone else eats and laughs at. Managers like you are a sad proof of the Dilbert principle. Since this situation is unlikely to change without you getting a full frontal lobotomy reversal, I am forced to tender my resignation, however I have a few parting thoughts. 1. When someone calls you in reference to employment, it is illegal for you to give me a bad recommendation. The most you can say to hurt me is “I prefer not to comment.” I will

2. I have all the passwords to every account on the system, and I know every password you have used for the last five years. If you decide to get cute, I am going to publish your "favourites list", which I conveniently saved when you made me "back up" your useless files. I do believe that terms like "Lolita" are not usually viewed favourably by the administration.

Thank you for your time, and I expect the letter of recommendation on my desk by 8:00am tomorrow. One word of this to anybody, and all of your little twisted repugnant obsessions will be open to the public. Never mess with your systems administrator. Why? Because they know what you do with all that free time! Wishing you a grand and glorious day, Cecelia

Celebrity piers? Ant and Dec have suggested that Piers Morgan could star on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! this year as he’s ‘looking for a job’.

The pair spoke about the upcoming series of the ITV reality show and joked that Piers could finally sign up as he’s ‘not working at the moment’.

Piers left GMB after six years as a co-presenter on the ITV programme earlier this year following a record number of people complained to Ofcom about his remarks regarding Meghan Markle.

Speaking on Lorraine, Ant suggested that now could be the ideal time to sign him up to the series. ‘You’ve always said you’d quite like to have Piers Morgan in there. Is that still the case?’ presenter Lorraine Kelly asked. ‘Well he’s not working at the moment, so he’ll be looking for a job,’ Ant joked.

ITV bosses might have a big job on their hands if they’re to convince Piers to take part, though. Last year a fan asked Piers on Twitter: ‘What would it take for you to go on to I’m A Celeb?’ He replied: ‘£10million.’

Green Coldplay The band Coldplay is to end its ban on touring after hiring eco-experts to get them gigging again. The band refused to take its last album, Everyday Life, on the road over fears of polluting the planet — and said fans wouldn’t see them again until their stadium shows were ‘environmentally beneficial’. Frontman Chris Martin now says they are confident they can be carbon-neutral rockers. ‘We said about 18 months ago that we won’t do a big tour again until we can make it super-clean and super-green,’ the 44-year-old said. ‘After that interview, so many people approached us with ideas so we, our creative director Phil (Harvey) and our manager Dave (Holmes), have been working with people and seeing how we can do it. ‘When we are able to announce a tour, it will be as green as we can possibly make it; always with room to improve.’

Fleur Bounces Back X Factor star Fleur East was left ‘really burnt’ when she was dumped by Simon Cowell’s record label Syco, she has revealed. The Sax singer bounced back to carve out a career as a DJ on Hits Radio and as a TV host — but she has warned hopefuls considering going on The X Factor that fame can be a ‘double-edged sword’. ‘When I left Syco I felt really burnt,’ she said. ‘I had achieved my dreams, got a massive record deal — then was literally put on the shelf,’ she told Guilty Pleasures. ‘I was left questioning my talent, and whether I was worthy of having that opportunity. That was the hardest.’ Luckily, she was hired by ITV to host game show The Void, with Ashley Banjo, and has now clocked up 500 shows as a Hits Radio host.

She said of Cowell’s hit talent show: ‘I went into it knowing it’s huge and could go one way or the other. I had to accept that risk. I knew my career could take off or I might not work again in the industry as there is a stigma attached to it.’

Billie’s confession Billie Piper has described feeling like a ‘charlatan’ during her teenage years as a chart-topping singer.

The Doctor Who star had a number one in 1998 with, ‘Because We Want To’ when she was just 15, making her the youngest female artist to debut at the top of the singles chart. She has since become a successful and acclaimed actor on both stage and screen, but described feeling like a ‘charlatan’ during her early career. ‘I loved singing but I didn’t have the strongest voice, I didn’t write songs and I didn’t play or write music,’ she told Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. ‘Acting was what I wanted to do most.’

Going into her time as the Time Lord’s companion on Doctor Who, Billie credited the show as taking her on when she was perceived as a ‘burnt-out child star’.

‘It was a very exciting and satisfying time because it was hard to get an acting job with my history, first as a pop star then as this sort of burnt-out child star, which is how I think I was painted.’

It’s A Flying Cheek!

We live three hundred metres from the little aerodrome in Trapiche. Apart from a few years ago when the aerodrome had a heavy number of private pilots using the space above our heads to practice noisy and dangerous ‘aerobatics’ continuously – I am pleased to say this is no longer an issue - the aerodrome has not really been a problem – just the odd propeller aircraft passing over from time to time which is no trouble at all and quite a delight.

But in recent months the air traffic has risen, with the opening of two pilot schools, and within the local community a protest group was formed on social media which has become very active, and followed especially by those living in north Velez and Benamocarra. This has now become a big local controversy which we have been following from a distance. However, when the President of the Real Aeroclub de Málaga, which runs the aerodrome, was recently asked for comments on the recent protests from local residents, by Sur newspaper, I was shocked and infuriated to read his answer.

93

Translated, he said “The majority of protesters are foreigners who have bought country houses that are illegal as they are agricultural buildings that they are letting out to tourists”.

As a person with a real estate business in this area for twenty years, I could not believe my eyes, at such an arrogant and prejudice answer. Every ‘foreigner’ I know in this area lives in a legal or legalised residential house, and thanks to the hard work of local lawyers, notaries and some agencies, I know of no case of ‘foreigners’ living in or letting out agricultural buildings to tourists as residences – does anyone know of such a case? I would like all local ‘foreign’ residents in this area to know that I intend to defend them, in a letter to the editor, explaining this and suggesting that if that was the President’s only response to a genuine question, then he clearly has no argument. Wine With Me: England

97

Wine productions, in England, most certainly have several centuries of knowledge and expertise. The 20th century saw increased developments and the wine industry became a more serious business, with English wines gaining much respect and acknowledgement, receiving numerous awards, at prestigious competitions and events. I searched for a company that produces and makes available, an excellent range of wines – something for all tastes and palates.

amongst the Cellarmaster’s Choice range, which is specifically selected by Denbies’ wine makers. A splendid red wine to accompany red meats and casseroles.

Denbies Wine Estate is located in Surrey and was established during 1986. Several grape varieties are grown, for their wine productions, many of which are award-winning.

GrEENFIELDS (12.5% vol) from their Vineyard Select range, is a further example of a superb, bottle-fermented ‘sparkler’. The golden-straw colour complements a most wonderful bouquet. The Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier grapes give the impressive, crisp pleasures for the mouth’s enjoyment, which is extended.

BACCHUS (11% vol) is produced only in the best seasons, from 100% Bacchus grapes which are cold-fermented in stainless steel vats, plus a small portion that is barrel-fermented and aged. A wonderful pale-straw colour entices to the nasal appeal. The mouthfeel and palate enjoy the dry and full-bodied effect, perfectly, for this Vineyard Select, white wine production. SUrrEY GOLD (11.5% vol) I found to possess a bouquet of fragrances, then, following on, to have an excellent mouthfeel and palate. This is a white wine, Classic Collection, production.

rOSE HILL (11.5% vol) is in the ‘middle’. Between white and red, this ‘pink’ production certainly does not disappoint. The bouquet of summer fruits extends to a real, bursting mouthfeel. This is a Classic Collection, wine. rEDLANDS (12% vol) is to be found

WHITEDOWNS BrUT (12% vol) – Cellarmaster’s Choice – I consider a very good sparkling wine. This production is made from a blend of grape varieties grown on the Denbies Estate and then bottle-fermented, providing fruits, with fresh flavour and a perlage which entices to a lengthy appeal. A splendid wine to enjoy pre-dining (or whenever!).

For all details and information, including wine tours and tastings, please contact: Denbies Wine Estate Ltd, London Road, Dorking, Surrey, RH5 6AA. Tel: 44 (0) 1306 876 616 and visit: www.denbies.co.uk

An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, 'Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow.' The next day the man reappeared at the Doctor's' office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked what happened and the man explained, 'Well, doc, it's like this, first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. 'Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with her teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. 'We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezing it between her knees, but still nothing.' The doctor was shocked! 'You asked your neighbour?” The old man replied, 'Yep, none of us could get the jar open.’ ------------------------------------------------------------An Australian guy is travelling around the Greek Islands. He walks into a bar and by chance, is served by an Australian barmaid. As she takes his order, a Foster's, she notices his accent. Over the course of the evening they get chatting. At the end of her shift he asks if she wants to come back to his place. Although she is attracted to him she says no. He then offers to pay her €200 to sleep with him. As she is travelling around the world, and is short of funds, she agrees. The next night the guy turns up again. Again he orders Fosters and after showing her plenty of attention, asks if she will sleep with him again for €200. She remembers the night

before and is only too happy to agree. This goes on for 5 nights. On the 6th night the guy comes in again, orders Fosters but goes and sits in the corner. The barmaid thinks that if she pays him more attention then, maybe she can shake some more cash out of him. So she goes over and sits next to him. She asks him where he's from in Australia .. 'Melbourne', he tells her. 'So am I. What suburb?' she enquires. 'Glen Iris' he replies. 'That's amazing,' she says excitedly, 'so am I what street?' 'Cameo Street' he replies. 'This is unbelievable.........' she says, her voice quavering; 'What number?' 'Number 20', he replies. She is totally astonished. 'You are NOT going to believe this,' she screams, 'but I'm from number 22! My parents still live there!' ‘I know...' he says, 'Your Dad gave me $1,000 to give to you' He who drinks Australian, thinks Australian. ------------------------------------------------------------A man was lying in bed with his new girlfriend. After having great sex, she spent the next hour just rubbing his testicles something she just loved to do. As he was enjoying it, he turned and asked her, "Why do you love doing that?" “Because I really miss mine" ------------------------------------------------------------Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, 'Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!' Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, 'Never mind, I found one.'

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the clerk. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack. 'Miss Whack, I'd like to get a 30,000€ loan to take a holiday.' Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager. Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, 'Sure. I have this,' and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says, 'There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow 30,000€, and he wants to use this as collateral.' She holds up the tiny pink elephant. 'I mean, what in the world is this?' The bank manager looks back at her and says... 'It's a knick knack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan, his old man's a Rolling Stone.' ------------------------------------------------------------Sheila and her husband Barry went for counseling after 37 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, Sheila went into a passionate, painful tirade, listing every problem they had ever had in the 37 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking Sheila to stand and unbutton her blouse, he embraced her, put his hands on her breasts, and kissed her passionately as her husband Barry watched with a raised eyebrow.. Her face was deeply flushed and she panted softly. Sheila shut up, buttoned up her blouse,

and quietly sat down in a daze. The therapist turned to Barry and said, 'This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?' Barry thought for a moment and replied; "Well, I can drop her off here Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I play golf.' Can you pick her up?? ------------------------------------------------------------Jurgen Klopp flies to Baghdad to watch a young Iraqi play football. He is suitably impressed and arranges for him to join the squad at Anfield. Two weeks later Liverpool are 4-0 down at Chelsea with only 20 minutes left. The manager gives the young Iraqi striker the nod and on he goes. The lad is a sensation, scores 5 goals and wins the game for Liverpool. The fans are delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the media love the new star. When the player comes off the pitch, he phones his Mum to tell her about his first day in English football. 'Hello Mum, guess what?' he says (in an Iraqi accent).'I played for 20 minutes today. We were 4-0 down but I scored 5 and we won. Everybody loves me, the fans, the media they all love me.’ 'Wonderful,' says his Mum, 'Let me tell you about my day. Your father got shot in the street and robbed, your sister and I were ambushed, gang raped and beaten and your brother has joined a gang of looters, and all while you were having such great time. The young lad is very upset, 'What can I say Mum, but I'm so sorry.' 'Sorry?!!! Sorry?!!!' says his Mum, 'It's your bloody fault we moved to Liverpool in the first place!' ------------------------------------------------------------“Mum! I’m going out!” “You’re not leaving this house until you change that miniskirt!” “Why?” “Because I can see your balls Richard!”
