m Fro Ed... the

Welcome to the September edition of ‘The Little Mag That Fits In Your Bag For Info On The Go', and I hope you have all had a wonderful summer; I know I say this a lot, but I really cannot believe where this year has gone so far! I also marvel at the way in which so many businesses, which have been affected by COVID 19, are still going strong and with smiles on their faces — I admire each and every one of you. We at The Sentinella do our utmost to make sure any business that advertises with us is top of our priority list when we make recommendations to our readers and friends. We will always put your business first, and promote it wherever and whenever we can.

I know this is old news, but the earthquake felt by many between Loja and Granada on 12th August — measuring in at 4.6 on the Richter scale — actually scared the living daylights out of me. This was the first earthquake I have ever felt in the 15 years I have lived here, and in the 40-something years I have been alive for that matter; to be honest, I really don’t want to feel another one anytime soon! I find it incredible that people living directly opposite me in Torre del Mar didn’t feel a single thing, but people in Comares, Torrox, Nerja, Frigiliana, Algarrobo, Velez Malaga, Sayalonga, Vinuela, Caleta de Velez and Alcaucin all reported feeling the quake. Scientists out there … please let me know how this is possible? Maybe they were just too busy snoring to hear it!

For me it felt like I was being invaded by a bad storm; the bed and cupboards were shaking like mad and the noise was something very strange too — apparently many did not hear it. It all happened so quickly that it was hard to take in, but it did leave me shaking in my hallway for a good 10-15 minutes after the event.

Strange News

Goodness only knows what it must be like to experience a much stronger one — such as the one in Haiti on 14th August which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale and affected not only small towns, but seven or eight small surrounding countries and killed more than 2,200 people, injuring almost 10,000 more. This I really wouldn’t want to experience and my thoughts go to all the families who lost loved ones.

However, let’s turn to some good news. September is here and that means two things: being able to park in all the main towns again — so if you haven’t frequented your local bars, restaurants and shops recently, they are still there waiting for you — and secondly, the weather becomes more bearable. So on that note, enjoy the cooler month of September and as always, enjoy the read!

Secret stash A businessman divided opinion when he recently took a stand against ‘bra money’. Bedding salesman Michael Flynn had become fed up with customers paying with cash that has been stashed in their bras as temperatures soared to above 300C in Dublin. He sought to put an end to the ‘unsanitary’ habit by issuing an ‘urgent’ notice on a poster outside his store. The note from ‘Mattress Mick’ read: ‘NO BRA MONEY. Due to increasing temperatures, and for our own personal safety, we will NOT be accepting any bra money. Sorry for any inconvenience.’ Many customers found the new rule hilarious, but some argued the new policy was sexist, suggesting men also carried money in their underwear. One woman wrote: ‘What about men with sweaty b*****ks? No singling the women out’. Milky bars are on her Just two days after giving birth, a woman in Portugal told her doctors that she had mysterious pain in her right armpit. When the doctors examined her, they discovered a round, firm mass which released a white discharge when pressed, according to a new report in the New England Journal of Medicine. The authors of the paper realised that this discharge was breastmilk. The mother was diagnosed with polymastia, a condition in which accessory breast tissue develops along the former embryonic mammary ridge, the doctors explained. Research suggests that between 2% and 6% of women are born with additional breast tissue, which routine screenings for breast cancer need to be aware of for examinations. This tissue grows as a result of embryonic development — often in the armpit region — when the cells that become mammary glands are forming a line from the armpit to the groin. In some cases, the tissue may appear with supernumerary nipples, but even in cases where there is no nipple, then it may be possible to express milk from it.

Strange News (Continued)

Naked housewife A mum had a shock when she found a handwritten note tucked under her car windscreen wiper telling her to shut her blinds when walking naked round her house. Alex Taylor, from Chelmsford, Essex, denied that she ever walked round naked with the view visible, but said she had locked the door and turned her lights off wearing a t-shirt over a pair of French knickers at 10.30pm the night before. She was shocked to find the anonymous note at around 8.30am the next morning. The badly-spelled note read: ‘It would be much appreciated if you could unleast shut your blinds when walking naked around your house… My kids do not and would not want to see your ass out on show. Much appreciated, your neibours.’ Mum-of-two Alex, a car sales manager, said finding the note was ‘bizarre’ but admitted she often walks around wearing even less. ‘They’re lucky they caught me quite covered

up on this occasion,’ she said. ‘I’m very comfortable in my own skin; I have no problem with the way I look. It’s my house, it’s my rules.’ Boffin Barbie Barbie has created a doll of one of the scientists who helped create the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine, in the hope of inspiring girls to get into science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) careers. Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert has been honoured as a 'Barbie Role Model' for her work at the University of Oxford and for her role as project leader in the creation of the COVID-19 vaccine which is now in use in many countries around the world. Professor Gilbert said: ‘I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of girls into STEM careers and hope that children who see my Barbie will realise how vital careers in science are, to help the world around us.’

How To Have A Sparkling Pool With Jolly Gel

If you own a pool you’ll know how tricky it is to keep it in perfect condition, and how costly it is to maintain

Dirt, dust, insects, leaves and ‘bather pollution’ constantly undo all your hard work and the pool can quickly lose its’ ‘sparkle’, and the water becomes cloudy and dull. But there’s an economic, effortless solution that will produce incredibly transparent pool-water In just 24 hours and greatly reduce the expense of owning a pool.

Jolly Gel is an astonishingly effective water clarifier. It’s non-toxic and leaves no chemical residues. Simple to use, no mess, no fuss, no spills and no chance of overdosing. It’s popular too – 9 million packs sold worldwide in 2020!

It cleans the water so thoroughly that there is nothing left for the filter to catch, so the filter does not ‘fill up’ and need a weekly backwash – back-washing can be reduced to every 4,5 or 6 weeks, saving approx. 40,000 litres of water annually in an 8mX4m pool. Reduced backwashing also saves chemicals, heat and electricity and greatly extends the useful life of the filter, salt-system (and most other pool equipment) by total removal of suspended abrasive particles from the sand-filter. Visit our website https://mypoolguru.com/special-chemicals/jolly-gel-info (follow the QR code) for details on exactly how it works and to watch a 2-minute video. You’ll be so glad you tried it. Money back if not totally delighted!

Pools are complicated things but if you’d like to learn how to look after your own pool visit http://archive.poolsafetyspain.com/ . There are over 200 articles on pools, including detailed information on how to maintain, clean, repair, upgrade, winterise and open (in spring) swimming pools, all written in plain English with no jargon. See main advert on page 22

There are 4 cubes per pack. Just put one in the pump basket, run the pump/filter for 24 hours, backwash and you’re done. After the first 24 hours, revert to your normal filter times.

One cube lasts for 3 weeks in a 60m³ pool; a pack of 4 lasts 3 months. You can use the pool during the first 24 hours.

Interesting Facts... Rwanda’s population is made up mostly of Hutus and Tutsis. Although

Rwandans are working really hard now to leave their differences behind, these two ethnic groups have often been in conflicts historically. The culmination of this conflict was in 1994, when for a period of only about 100 days, almost one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered by the Hutus. It is the fastest and one of the most brutal genocides in history – with weapons such as machetes and clubs used by both military and ordinary people. Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa.

Rwanda is characterised by its hilly and mountainous terrain. The country is 1,000m above sea level on average and never goes down to sea level.

Every last Saturday of every month from 8am to 11am people nationwide participate in community projects. It's known as Umuganda and it’s mandatory. People all over the country take part in cleaning the streets, helping to build schools, cutting grass, etc. The idea behind this practice is not only to keep everything clean and tidy, but also to help unite people after the Genocide.

The Secret To A Long Marriage

It's not difficult to make a woman happy. A man only needs to be:

a friend, a companion, a lover, a brother, a father, a master, a chef, an electrician, a carpenter, a plumber, a mechanic, a decorator, a stylist, a sexologist, a gynecologist, a psychologist, a pest exterminator, a psychiatrist, a healer, a good listener, an organiser, a good father, very clean, sympathetic, athletic, warm, attentive, gallant, intelligent, funny, creative, tender, strong, understanding, tolerant, prudent, ambitious, capable, courageous, determined, true, dependable, passionate, compassionate Without forgetting to: Give her compliments regularly, love shopping, be honest, be very rich, not stress her out, not look at other girls

And also at the same time, you must also: Give her lots of attention but expect little yourself, give her lots of time, especially time for herself, give her lots of space and never worrying about where she goes.

It is very important: Never to forget: Birthdays, anniversaries, arrangements that she makes. And to make a man happy, the woman needs to:

1. Turn up naked 2. Bring him alcohol 3. Give him the remote

Now that seems fair doesn’t it? It’s all about compromise!

For The Boys

The following is a certain man’s journey of life about the opposite sex

I just thought I’d write in to warn younger readers not to make the same mistakes I have made on the woman front…

and never got excited about anything. Life became so dull that I decided I needed a girl with some excitement.

When I was 14 I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend, but there was no passion so I decided I needed a passionate girl with a zest for life.

When I was 28 I found an exciting girl, but I couldn’t keep up with her. She rushed from one thing to another, never settling on anything. She did mad, impetuous things and made me miserable as often as happy. She was great fun initially and very energetic, but directionless. So I decided to find a girl with some real ambition.

When I was 25 I found a very stable girl but she was boring. She was totally predictable

I am now older and wiser and I am looking for a girl with big boobs!!

In college I dated a passionate girl but she was too emotional. Everything was an emergency; she was a drama queen, cried all the time and threatened suicide. So I decided I needed a girl with stability.

When I turned 31 I found a smart, ambitious girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground and I married her. She was so ambitious that she divorced me and took everything I owned.

Common Sense

An Obituary printed in the London Times:

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: -Knowing when to come in out of the rain; -Why the early bird gets the worm; -Life isn't always fair; -and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 year old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone.

Out And About In Torrox

Torrox is the name of a collection of locations situated east of Torre Del Mar. This is a popular spot to live and holiday for both Spanish and other European nations with one big factor being it has the best climate in Europe. Each of these places have much to offer in their own right and collectively, they form a lovely area to live, work and relax. Torrox Costa is located just 15km from Torre Del Mar. Torrox Costa has a totally different character and personality to its near neighbour. Like much of this coast, there’s an impressive promenade that sweeps the length of the beaches here. At its eastern end, just past the lighthouse, the beach is dog friendly and is a great spot to let your furry friend run along the shoreline.

Torrox Pueblo is situated at the foothills of the Alpujarra mountains, a couple of miles inland from Torrox Costa. This is traditional white-washed village set in a green valley. There’s a traditional Spanish feel to this small village, despite it being the home to many people from other parts of the world. Located between Torrox Costa and Pueblo, Torrox Park is a large collection of urbanisations that are popular relocation spots with those who decide to make this area of Axarquía their home. There’s property to suit every budget and style: spacious villas, townhouses and apartments along with a large and well equipped mobile home park that allows all year living. Whilst, in itself, Torrox Park, doesn’t offer much for day trippers, many visitors stay here as homes are frequently listed for holiday rental. It does provide all the services required for a smooth stay or relocation: bars, restaurants, supermarkets as well as doctors, chemists, hairdressers etc.

The combination of Torrox Costa, Pueblo and Park is a winning one. Each has their own distinct character but each are connected to form an excellent place to stay, explore and maybe even to live. Shop Local - Support Your Local Community

Dear milkman notes

Milkie

Dear Milkman, I’ve just had a baby, please leave another one.

Please leave an extra pint of paralysed milk.

Cancel one pint after the day after today. Please don’t leave any more milk. All they do is drink it. Milkman, please close the gate behind you because the birds keep pecking the tops off the milk. Milkman, please could I have a loaf but no bread today. Please cancel milk. I have nothing coming into the house but two sons on the dole.

Sorry to have not paid your bill before, but my wife had a baby and I’ve been carrying it around in my pocket for weeks. Sorry about yesterday’s note. I didn’t mean one egg and a dozen pints, but the other way round. When you leave my milk knock on the bedroom window and wake me because I want you to give me a hand to turn the mattress.

Plaza Lounge Bar’N - With New Cornish Chef

The Plaza lounge restaurant in Benamargosa has had a slight change in its appearance and usage! Many of you will remember the beautiful Sunday Carvery’s that Audrey used to make in the Plaza Lounge, now trading as the ‘Plaza lounge Bar’N’. Why the change? Audrey told

The Sentinella she has decided

to take a step back from the kitchen and embrace in something that she has always had an interest in, selling antiques and collectables which are available to view and purchase at the Plaza lounge Bar’N.

The kitchen will continue to be open with her new chef, Jeff from Cornwall.

I decided to visit on an early Friday evening for some Cornish style Fish & Chips. There were two options available, small at 6.95 euros or large for 9.95 euros, optional extras were mushy peas for 0.50c and curry sauce also at 0.50c. I was super hungry that day so chose the large portion with curry sauce to dip my chips. I was not disappointed with the large portion, the chips were really lovely, what I call ‘proper’ chips and the fish

53

was cooked to perfection with that all important chunk of lemon to smother over the fish and some bread and butter.

The construction work that has taken place over the past year or so on the Plaza, which is also The Bar’N’s terrace has now been completed so it was nice to sit out in the fresh air enjoying a small vino whilst waiting on the food.

Jeff will also be serving his ‘Cornish style’ Sunday roasts as from September, you will just have to reserve a table to discover how they are different to an English Sunday Roast. See main advert on page 31

Report Cards

These are real comments made by teachers on their student report cards.

Since my last report, your child has hit rock bottom and has started to dig. I would not allow this student to breed. Your child has delusions of adequacy.

Your child is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot. Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.

The student has a "full six-pack" but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together. This child has been working with glue too much.

When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell.

The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming.

Exercise Classes At The NEW Bodyworks Centre - La Vinuela

In the last few decades the world in general has become increasingly aware of the lack of exercise. The increasing use of cars has reduced the daily exercise we used to get and the medical profession has witnessed a decrease in levels of fitness coupled with an increase in cardiovascular disease and obesity.

The benefits of exercise and dance have been well-documented in recent years. Apart from the obvious physical improvements in muscle and body shape they strengthen bones and assist in preventing osteoporosis; stimulate the flow of oxygen and nutrients through the body which improves skin as well as heart and lung function and improves balance and co-ordination which reduces risk of disability. On top of this both exercise and dance have great benefits for the mind helping to reduce stress and anxiety whilst improving memory and mood.

However dancing also has the added benefit of stimulating the brain and not only staving off dementia but also improving cognitive ability in those who are already experiencing problems. Studies have shown that out of several different forms of exercise (golf, tennis, cycling etc...) dancing is the only one that improves the brain.

When you are making the effort to get out there and exercise you want to get the maximum benefit and make sure you are not risking any long term damage which is why the BODYWORKS studio at La Viñuela is the perfect place to go as it has a range of exercise classes to suit all ages and abilities. Amanda, Tammy and Chantelle are well qualified and experienced professionals who can advise you on the right class for you. So why not contact them on 655 936 590 and treat your body and mind to the benefits of exercise and dance in a fun-filled class in a cool air-conditioned studio. See main advert below

Director: Dominic Cooke Writer: Tom O'Connor Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel Brosnahan,MerabNinidze. Runtime: 1h 51m Rating: PG-13

The Courier is a true-life spy thriller — the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) who was recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK's MI6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (MerabNinidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis. This taut spy drama is set in the early 1960s,

and Wynne is depicted as the deliberately amateurish contact of the top-level defector who supplied extensive and vital information to the West about the Russian nuclear arsenal, including details of the deployment of missiles to Cuba in the summer of 1962. Even though he was arrested by the Soviets on 22 October 1962 and executed the following year, Penkovsky’s information apparently significantly influenced President John F Kennedy’s response to the Cuban missile crisis of October to November that year. Greville Wynne was arrested in Russia in May 1963 and jailed for eight years, serving time in the Lubyanka prison in Moscow until he was released in a spy swap in 1964. This otherwise conventional spy story suddenly morphs into a different kind of movie in its final third, depicting Wynne’s imprisonment, during which he finds in himself unsuspected reserves of courage. Cumberbatch, emaciated and shaven-headed, exposes the slightly alien being he always contains and the film gears up considerably in emotional impact. This is undoubtedly Cumberbatch’s best espionage film since Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Star Rating ****/*****

Colmenar: The Inland Gateway To Axarquia

Colmenar is at the farthest point of the Axarquía region and forms the entrance to this beautiful region. Surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation, it is a great place to start an exploration of the diverse scenery of Axarquía.

Colmenar is easily accessible via the motorway, 35km from Malaga on the A45 or AP46. From Torre Del Mar, the stunning A356 will take you to this small pretty white village. Because of its strategic position as a stopover point from Malaga, there has been a settlement here for many centuries. This is not a hill top village, despite being set 700m above sea level. In fact, Colmenar is in a valley. The name Colmenar means honey, which is handy as this village is a main producer of excellent honey. The Honey Museum is dedicated to the chief product of this municipality. Situated in the former Guild of Farmers’ building, it features several rooms to explore along with classroom-workshop as well as a gift shop.

Along with honey and its by-products, Colmenar is rich with other locally produced food and drink. This is a major agricultural area and it is known as ‘the pantry of Malaga’. Excellent olive oil is produced here along with wine. It will come as no surprise that festivals here have a gastronomic or food theme. The day of the 'Pipa', held in May is allegedly the celebration of sunflower seeds and is the chance to celebrate with a huge picnic. In December, Colmenar hosts the festival and pays homage to two of its most typical products: mosto, unfermented grape juice and chacina, locally cured meats. This festival attracts a large crowd who are entertained with traditional songs or verdiales, flamenco music and, of course, lots of cured meats and drink! With its foodie reputation, it will come as no surprise that local dishes feature many of its home grown produce. This is an inland area so food tends to be more meat based. Stew

made with goat is often served or kid with garlic and bean tortilla and chickpeas cooked with gammon. If you order 'dish of the mountains' you won’t leave the area hungry with the combination of pork loin, chorizo sausage, potatoes, peppers topped with a fried egg. Desserts here go beyond the ubiquitous rice pudding or crème Catalan with borrachuelos or lemon pastries, wine roscos, a traditional type of cake and quince jelly. A great place to try these dishes is the highly recommended Taberna de Flores though there are many contenders in the village. Nature features heavily in reasons to visit Colmenar. It is one of the entrances to Montes de Málaga Natural Park which is a beautiful area of nearly 5,000 hectares where Aleppo pine forests dominate the scenery. This is a perfect place to hike, picnic with a feast formed of local produce and immerse yourself in nature. Another option is to visit the source of the River Guadalmedina, which follows a route that takes you past flowing natural springs and fountains.

Within the town, there are also places to explore and enjoy the views. The Convent of the Virgin of La Candelabra is the highest point of the village. Also known as the 'Ermita' or hermitage. From its spectacular viewpoints, you can see the Tajo and Doña Ana gorges as well as the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountains. Legend has it that a group of fisherman saved from certain death in a terrible storm just off the coast of Malaga, built and dedicated the 17th century convent as a tribute to their miraculous survival. Colmenar is a great introduction to the Axarquía region as it represents much of what attracts both visitors and those seeking to relocate to this diverse and unique area. There’s the beautiful natural scenery, the lively annual festivals, an abundance of natural produce and the friendliness and warmth that Axarquía and Andalucia are famous for.

NON-LUCRATIVE VISAS TO LIVE IN SPAIN For British nationals who wish to reside in Spain there are two main options: Non-Lucrative visas are for those who can show evidence of income outside of Spain and have private medical care; Golden visas are for those who have more than 500,000€ to invest.

If you wish to apply for the Non-Lucrative visa, the first application can be made online by our specialist lawyer. The application is made to the relevant Spanish Consulate in the UK who will then issue a fixed appointment. You will attend in person with the original documentation, copies of which will have been scanned to them by our lawyer. The Spanish authorities will answer, normally within a month to six weeks, as to whether your application has been successful. If successful, you return to have your passport stamped with the visa (visado). This visa is for those who wish to become permanent residents in Spain. You will then attend the local police station with evidence of rental or ownership of property and your registration with the Town Hall where your residence card will be issued. This residence will be valid for one year and renewable for two consecutive two-year periods thereafter. You will need to be able to prove income of approximately 28,000€ for the main applicant and in the region of an additional 600€ monthly for economic dependants. You will also need private medical insurance and a clean criminal records check. Please bear in mind that if the application is

69

not made correctly the request can be refused and you will not be reimbursed the Spanish Consulate visa fee which is currently 516 GBP for the Non-Lucrative visa. Golden visas are for those who have more than 500,000€ to invest in Spain. For more information contact us. Each individual’s case is different and at De Cotta Law you can speak to Spanish abogados and qualified English Solicitors. Call +34 952 527 014 or email info@decottalaw.net for legal advice, and if your enquiry is about Residency ask to speak to Sam Baker. See main advert below

& t i Fru Factses Veg Grap

Grapes are botanically classed as berries. Grapes appear in many different colours. White, red, black, blue, green, purple and golden.

Grapes develop on the vine which can reach a length of 50 feet. One vine usually produces 40 clusters of grape.

Grapes are a non-climacteric type of fruit.

Frozen grapes used in wine are a great alternative to ice on a sunny day. They will not dilute the wine.

There are 60 species and around 8000 varieties of grapes that can be found throughout the world today. It takes 2.5 pounds of grapes for the production of one bottle of wine.

The two main types of grapes are European and American. They come in seedless and seeded varieties.

Grapes contain 80% of water and high percent of dietary fibres. It is rich source of vitamins C and K and vitamins of the B group. Grapes are also excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. Self Nutrition Data reports that they actually contain more than a quarter of the vitamin C you need in a day.

Some people also use extracts from grape seeds for medicinal purposes.

Grapes are high in a number of powerful antioxidant compounds. In fact, over 1,600 beneficial plant compounds have been identified in this fruit.

In one study in 69 people with high cholesterol, eating three cups (500 grams) of red grapes a day for eight weeks was shown to lower total and “bad” LDL cholesterol. White grapes did not have the same effect.

Residency Applications For British Citizens

The Immigration Office is still accepting applications for British citizens who wish to obtain residency in Spain if they can prove that they were living in Spain for over 6 months during 2020 and up to the present day. This is in addition to the requirements of the 2-stage application system previously established by the government to enable you to apply before Brexit, (e.g., proof of Spanish health Cover and adequate means to show that you do not have to rely on the Spanish Government). The Immigration Office consider the following documents as adequate proof of residency: -Bank/Credit Card statements showing expenditure in Spain throughout 2020 and 2021, for example: supermarkets, bars, restaurants, parking. -Proof of memberships such as golf clubs, tennis clubs etc. - Utility bills (Showing consumption) -Mobile/internet/telephone bills

-Invoices or receipts from Spanish companies - Doctors/hospital appointments in Spain - Resident Tax Declarations

*NOTE All documents must be in Spanish, show the date, your name, and where

possible your Spanish address. You would need to provide as many of the above documents as possible to ensure that your application is accepted.

To date we have not been informed as to how long this concession will be available, so speedy action is advisable. We can assist you with this process, guiding you through each step, completing the necessary forms, arranging appointments etc. Our fee for this service is 200€ per person or 300€ per couple. (Fees include VAT).

GREEN CARD/CERTIFICATE HOLDERS Also, something worth considering, although now, it is not obligatory to change green residency cards/certificates for new TIE cards, it is advisable, as it can facilitate crossing borders because the new cards are biometric. For example, many people are experiencing difficulties when crossing the border between Spain and Gibraltar, some banks are now requesting the TIE card too, and certain institutions also ask for the new card. Eventually it will be necessary to exchange your green residency document for a TIE card, although as yet no date has been set for this. If you would like us to assist you with the process, our fees are 150€ per person or 250€ per couple. (Fees include VAT). See main advert opposite

Property Issues: Building Permit Or Building Licenses

Are building licenses required and what is the procedure?

Often clients are under the mistaken idea that a license is not required when reforming their new purchase and modernising the interior of the property. Unfortunately this is not the case, a license should always be sought even for quite minor works. The consequences of not obtaining a suitable license can be expensive and time consuming to resolve. The only exceptions are for water tanks and septic tanks.

Minor works permit (Licencia Menor) - for walls, terraces, and barbecue area and general reforms. These can be obtained at the Town Hall. A licencia de obra menor is required. You will need to provide a summary of the construction you plan to have completed and an estimate of the final costs,

79

so that the Town Hall can calculate the taxes. Usually there is a standard fee payable based as a percentage of the total works. Major works permit (Licencia Major) - for new buildings, demolitions, or remodelling. For this form of permit, you must have technical drawings of the proposed works from an architect who is registered with the Spanish Architectural College. Builders should be involved at the outset and must also approve the plans. An estimate of the costs will need to be submitted. The fees involved with this type of permit can be as much as 6% of the construction costs, payable to the Town Hall, the Architects fees will be paid separately. LT Construction can assist you in this complex and often baffling process.

Dino doldrums Mrs Brown’s Boys star Gary Hollywood has opened up about the hardships and personal struggles he has endured after making the decision to quit the show last year. The 41-year-old Scottish actor was famed for his role as hairdresser Dino Doyle in the divisive Irish sitcom, and played the part from 2004 until 2020. But the star sensationally quit amid reports of a dispute over pay alongside fellow actor Damien McKiernan. The past year has been difficult for Gary, however, as he had to cope with the sudden death of his brother – and also the premature arrival of his baby son.”

Baby blues Chef Jamie Oliver and his wife Jools, who have tragically suffered five miscarriages, are considering using IVF so Jools can give birth once more at age 46. Jools had her fifth miscarriage during lockdown and, asked about having a sixth child, said: “Once you have these miscarriages you are always like, this baby is meant to be here, I have to keep trying. “So I have thought about IVF because having researched it and spoken to some amazing people, it seems like the right option for my age. “It's just imagining the baby in the blanket and it's all the lovely things that I've really cherished over the years. It is made much worse because Poppy is going to university and I think, ‘Oh, there you are, there's a room free’ — I'm sure that's a sign.”

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Gary gave insight into the struggles he has weathered. He said: “Dealing with the fall-out has been extremely exhausting and has really taken its toll on me emotionally. “It’s absolutely been the worst year of my life. I’ve felt depressed – it was one thing after another.” Gary says his wife, Cherylanne, has been his rock. “I don’t know if I could’ve got through it without her, or my amazing family and friends,” he added. “I’m also a patron for a mental health charity in Scotland called Back Onside and they offer counselling, which has helped.”

What fame means Aston Merrygold says fellow X Factor star Liam Payne shouldn't blame being in a boyband for mental health issues, stating losing privacy 'comes with the job.'

Liam has admitted he felt “trapped” in the boyband One Direction (1D) claiming he was locked inside "lonely hotel rooms," but Aston, who also found fame in boyband JLS having been on the X Factor, disputes the singer's claims. Speaking to The Sun he said: “You are your own boss. It’s not that you were not allowed to do something. Liam was in the biggest band on the planet and there were thousands of people outside the hotel. So it was probably a safety thing. “It comes with the job. You sign away your privacy. I think you should expect everything; expect it all and say, ‘This is what I want to work for’. “If you don’t want any of those things then you should not start it because the downside does come and when it does, there are going to be bits that you don’t like.”

Britney’s battle Following a legal ruling, Britney Spears has had her request denied to bring forward the date when her father would no longer have control over her life and finances.

The star's new lawyer, Mathew S Rosengart, had requested an emergency hearing to re-examine the role of Jamie Spears in the singer's affairs.

However, judge Brenda Penny has denied the request, meaning the earliest her father could be suspended from his role is September 29. Jamie oversees his 39-year-old daughter’s finances, however Britney has claimed she has endured hardship under his control, likening her situation to being a victim of sex trafficking. Her life and career have been controlled by the court-ordered conservatorship since 2008 after she suffered a series of mental breakdowns. However, Jamie has always insisted he has his daughter's best interests at heart. "Britney has grown older and hopefully she has matured, but I don’t believe that she can be left to fend for herself,” he said. “She still has serious issues that aren’t just going to disappear."

A Natural Paradise in Comares

Recently, we were invited to the 60th birthday party of a client of ours, a lovely lady, Wendy, with her equally lovely husband Clive, from the UK, who I can only describe as bouncy, cheerful and amazingly optimistic!

They bought their little country house earlier this year with a good sized plot of land with stunning views, in the rugged mountain countryside of Comares and in the short time they have been here they have transformed the land from a simple, rocky landscape to a stunning, exciting garden. None of the wildness or ruggedness of the land has been taken away, in fact, they have celebrated nature here, with not an ounce of concrete anywhere, just lovely little meandering paths leading past mature olive trees and huge ancient carob trees, past a hammock overlooking a view, past a little fountain which cascades in a mini river down a little hill, and much more. As one strolls along the paths, one discovers a little cane bar with seating, and a dip pool for cooling off in the heat of summer. What a wonderful job they have done! Wendy and Clive are hoping to soon be

93

welcoming guests to their future mini-business, offering limited glamping-style accommodation on site, a dip pool, a little outdoor bar, and they are about to begin renovating a little casita for further accommodation.

When we sell a country house like Finca Huerto Hurtado to clients, and you see them dive with unlimited enthusiasm into a project such as this, so sympathetic with nature and so beautifully simple and inspiring, it brings to life what we often find ourselves doing – transforming people’s lives and making their dreams come true! In our little way, we hope we help more people to find new happiness in this, our much-loved little corner of Andalusia. Costa Animal Society ( CAS)

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) shop soldiered on through Covid and the dog days of summer.

With autumn, we hope, on the way, we’ll be restocking the shop with clothing to reflect the season. We continue to offer incredible bargains during a time when we know that every penny counts. Despite rock-bottom prices, we regularly offer snap sales on various categories of merchandise, so stop by if you’re in the neighbourhood, you never know what unexpected treasure you might find. The shop's large inventory is clean and well-presented, updated daily, with a friendly staff of volunteers on hand to help. Donations are always welcome - please help us to restock our shelves. Of course all shop proceeds go directly towards helping our animal friends in need, primarily for vet bills, food and kennelling costs. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) Shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. Our opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 10.00am until 2.00pm.

CAS is always eager to hear from people who are interested in becoming shop volunteers. One four-hour shift once a week makes a big difference. There are always two volunteers per shift making for a safe, relaxed, congenial environment. For more information please stop by the shop or feel free to call our shop manager May Delaney on 653 557 237.

Drinks: Make Mine A Crabbie

Alcoholic beverages, from beers, lagers, ciders, through wines and liqueurs, to spirits and more, have been consumed and enjoyed for many, many centuries. The whisky industry is doing very well, indeed. With the UK and export markets increasing, whisky, most definitely, can be said to have ‘stood the test of time’. As societies become more affluent, then the requirement for whisky grows, being something of a status symbol, clearly giving signs of a higher lifestyle. For example, it is reported that in China, people are enjoying Scotch whisky in western-style

well-balanced mouthfeel continues the delight, with an excellent body that has superb depth and a richness that follows for the palate’s pleasure, having fruity and vanilla overtones.

independent wines/drinks retailers, bars, restaurants and they can be purchased online, too.

John Crabbie & Co have been purveyors of wine and spirits since 1801. John Crabbie and his family owned a lot of property in Leith, north of Edinburgh and exported around the globe. Providing fine, single malt Scotch whiskies was John Crabbie’s objective in life. Several whiskies are within the Crabbie range. Yardhead Single Malt is so named because of the original site in Leith. The Crabbie 12 year old Speyside Single Malt whisky is hugely popular and produced utilising bourbon casks, to great advantage. The bouquet is most enticing and the smooth,

Other Crabbie whiskies include 8 year old and 12 year old productions, plus 15 year old Highland Single Malt. 40 year old Speyside Single Malt (44.5% vol) and 50 year old Islay Single Malt (46.5% vol) are destined for the ‘top table’, most certainly, I suspect. Stockists of Crabbie whiskies include supermarkets,

It is always exciting and very satisfying to find whiskies that are fresh and have interest, with a good nose and flavour. The flavour and finish, on the palate, having great importance – then duly noted and remembered! John Crabbie & Co, Leith, Edinburgh Tel: 44 (0) 151 480 8800

A married man left work early one Friday, but instead of going home, he spent the weekend playing golf and partying with the guys. When he finally returned home on Sunday night, his wife really got on his case and stayed on it. After a few of hours of swearing and screaming, his wife paused and pointed at him and made him an offer. "How would you like it if you didn't see me for a couple of days?"..... The husband couldn't believe his luck, so he looked up, smiled and said, "That would suit me just fine!!" Monday went by, and the man didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday went by and he still didn't see her. Come Thursday, the swelling went down a bit and he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye. ------------------------------------------------------------Two Irish couples decided to swap partners for the night. The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars.' Buddy and Edna agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word. A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The barman looks at him and says, "Hang on! You're a duck." "I see your eyes are working," replies the duck. "And you can talk!" exclaims the barman. "I see your ears are working, too," says the duck. "Now if you don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?" "Certainly, sorry about that," says the barman as he pulls the duck's pint. "It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub.. What are you doing round this way?" "I'm working on the building site across the road," explains the duck. "I'm a plasterer." The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it. So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens for two weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town. The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him "You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!" "Sounds marvellous," says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. "Get him to give me a call." So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says, "Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money." "I'm always looking for the next job," says the duck. "Where is it?" "At the circus," says the barman.

"The circus?" repeats the duck. "That's right," replies the barman. "The circus?" the duck asks again. "That place with the big tent?" "Yeah," the barman replies. "With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?" says the duck. "Of course," the barman replies. "And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?" persists the duck. "That's right!" says the barman. The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says . . . "What the f...... would they want with a plasterer??!" ------------------------------------------------------Paddy and Mick are walking down a street in London. Paddy happens to look in one of the shop windows and sees a sign that catches his eye. The sign said: "Suits £5.00 each, Shirts £2.00 each, Trousers £2.50 per pair." Paddy says to his pal, "Mick, look! We could buy a whole lot of dose and when we get back to Ireland we could make a fortune. Now when we go into the shop, you be quiet, OK? Just let me do all the talking, cause if they hear our accent, they might not be nice to us. I'll speak in my best English accent." "Roight y'are, Paddy, I'll keep me mouth shut, so I will," replies Mick. They go in and Paddy says, "I'll take 50 suits at £5.00 each, 100 shirts at £2.00 each and 50 pairs of trousers at £2.50 each. I'll back up my van and..." The owner of the shop interrupts. "You're from Ireland, aren't you?" "Well... Yes," says a surprised Paddy. "How der hell d' y' know dat?" The owner replied, "This is a dry cleaners."

ARIES: March 21-April 20 A sociable, happy phase for Arians, bringing opportunities to meet new people and expand networks and relationships, which can be explored alone or in company. Accept invitations! TAURUS: April 21-May 21 A little sensitive during September, you can flourish and gather confidence if you choose warm and calm company, people that will engage with your ideas and listen to your thoughts. Be honest, but kind, when giving others your opinions

GEMINI: May 22-June 21 A month in which you can dare to take on, and enjoy, challenges and new projects. Stay alert but take a step back from family tensions until tranquility returns towards the end of September when they can feature again as a priority more easily tackled

CANCER: June 22-July 22 You can regain self-motivation and happy energy by considering adjustments and making decisions. Any latent bad feeling or atmosphere can finally be dispelled if you are organised, attentive, helpful and perhaps less broody than of late LEO: July 23-August 23 Your happiness and well-being puts you on a high that you want to roar about but wherein you need to watch that ego, or how others perceive it - don’t let it run away with you. Continue to charm those around you with your natural generosity and by helping to fulfill their wishes

VIRGO: August 24-September 22 You may find yourself sensitive and uncertain at the beginning of the month, questioning and doubting yourself and others, and feeling a lack of hold or control on some situations. Leave the doors to opportunity open and allow what will be to happen and others to make them happen!

LIBRA: September 23 - October 22 Love predominates for Librans this September, with romantic relationships given priority and mundane routines refused. Feeling completely in tune with yourself, you can easily charm and seduce those around you

SCORPIO: October 23 - November 21 If home and family life has been stressful recently, now is the time to slow down, appreciate special moments, plan a magic vacation or staycation, and resist the least urgent trivialities. Be flexible

SAGITTARIUS: November 22 December 21 At the beginning of the month a sense of suffocation prevents smooth handling of problems, with you preferring instead to escape certain responsibilities. The second half of the month brings better planetary aspects giving you opportunity to breathe and find solutions CAPRICORN: December 22 January 20 You may be hiding your feelings and, unwittingly, presenting a cold front – instead allow yourself to be carefree, bringing back the joy that punctuated your summer. Be open and realistic, allowing yourself to take time out from the family you have been nurturing – visit your best friend for some much-needed fun and frolics!

AQUARIUS: January 21-February 19 Forget the past few months, September is plain sailing for Aquarians with wise decisions made and projects sucessfully realised. A good time to cement relationships, to plan for the future and to follow your heart PISCES: February 20-March 20 If you are missing someone, instead of unnecessary heartache, look forward to the reunion not far away now. A family project, undertaken now, will be successful and fun, and receive support and encouragement from all parties
