CAB

Council for Aluminium in Building

Firstly, I would like to say how delighted I was to become your President in 2011. I have always been a strong supporter of CAB and what it stands for – being the ‘recognised voice’ of the aluminium in building sector. As market conditions, standards and legal requirements change constantly, CAB membership ensures businesses involved in the aluminium supply chain are kept fully up to date and can therefore gain competitive advantage. This is something that I want our Association to build on and while we must grow, I have put existing members at the heart of my focus during my two years in office. I am keen to see, for example, more face to face contact between the CAB Team and our membership, on a one-to-one basis, in order for us to better understand member needs in economically challenging times. We will also continue to work hard to find ways of increasing the value for membership. We have built some excellent foundations through our diverse activities, from mini-conference / breakfast network events to sustainability initiatives. We have not only provided expert advice on standards and regulations but also increased our technical influence in Europe, which is further borne out by the list of selected achievements listed on page 17. This work in the UK and Internationally has been endorsed by many in the supply chain, including several of our senior main contractor guest speakers, who also encouraged CAB to continue proactively promoting aluminium as a leading and sustainable 21st Century material. We can, however, gain additional mutual benefits from closer relationships with other leading sector bodies with common interests. To this end I am pleased that we are currently developing links with the UK Aluminium Federation, which can only strengthen both organisations. Finally, I would like to thank the hard working CAB Team for all their efforts in the last 12 months and the assistance they have given me, but, most of all, our members for their continued support.

Council for Aluminium in Building

We welcome you to our 6th Annual Report. We continue to see forecasters, such as the Construction Products Association, predicting a contraction in the UK Construction industry by as much as 5.2% this year. However, at the same time there is not only an ever increasing number of fabricators including aluminium within their range, but also a visible high level of investment taking place in both technology and product innovation throughout our sector supply chain. For our part we have lobbied hard for the greater use of aluminium in major rail and infrastructure projects. We will highlight some of our key member events and sustainability initiatives in more detail later, however, it is pleasing to see such high levels of ongoing support for our events over the last 12 months including ‘Breakfast Networks’ that took place for the first time in Coventry, Glasgow, Maidstone and Bolton. For 2012 we are moving the focus of our Regional meetings towards issues surrounding the ‘changing face of specification’ and how our supply chain communicates and interacts with Specifiers. Our communication strategy continues to focus heavily on strong PR and we now present 4 regular monthly feature articles including one for our ezine www.aluminiuminarchitecture. co.uk, which at the end of 2011 had achieved a circulation of over 11,000. The annual Ecobuild exhibition at Excel, Docklands presents us with an outstanding opportunity to present aluminium’s sustainability credentials and to highlight the important initiatives that CAB is involved in both in the UK and Internationally. We continue to seek out any opportunities to promote aluminium and while our RIBA Approved CPD seminars remain very popular with architects, we are also currently working with the Department of Architecture and Built Environment at Nottingham University on a research project to highlight aluminium’s service life.

Chief Executive’s Report Justin Ratcliffe

The above activities require substantial promotion and CAB is investing in a new website that will become live during 2012. This project, together with a diverse range of other activities aimed at maximising our voice and influence will help to expand our membership base, but more crucially, will maximise the added value for our highly supportive existing members.

CAB

Council for Aluminium in Building

Over the last 12 months the CAB Technical Team of Martin Ford and myself has strived to maximise the support to members by keeping them informed and representing both their current and future interests. The CAB Technical newsletter, INSIGHT, has continued to develop as the scale of our involvement in UK and European standards has increased. Recognising the need to improve the immediacy of the information provided, towards the end of 2011 we started to develop a monthly INSIGHT which will now be available within 2 weeks of the end of each month. The segregation of the CAB Technical Committee Steering Group continues to work well and in consultation with the most experienced members of the Technical Committee, we now have the time and expertise to prepare both its future strategy and work content. The interpretation of the Construction Products Regulations (CPR) and its implications has caused much discussion with DCLG, CWCT, CPA, Standards’ Bodies and within the industry itself. To address this, the Technical Committee Working Group on CE marking has produced a guidance document for Fabricators which is now available to all Members. The problems associated with the operation of the Secured by Design (SbD) Schemes and the requirements for accreditation have concentrated our minds and at the end of 2011 discussions were held with SbD who addressed our members’ concerns and gave reassurances as to the future operation of their schemes. The upshot of this has been that our focus for 2012 will be to work with Accreditation Bodies to develop schemes to minimise the costs of testing for Fabricators and discussions are already underway. In October 2011 I was elected as the Technical Secretary of the Federation of European Window & Curtain Walling Manufacturers’ Association (FAECF) and commenced my role on

Technical Consultant’s Report Patrick England 1st January 2012. This enables me to represent our industry in the work of the Council of European Producers of Materials for Construction (CEPMC) which has direct involvement with the European Commission. I am also supported by our Immediate Past President, Adrian Toon, who was elected as FAECF Vice-President. In November 2011 I was nominated as the UK Lead Delegate for CEN TC33 WG1 Windows & Doors, representing the UK industry. Now that the consultation documents have been released for ‘Part L Conservation of Fuel and Power’ including SAP and SBEM National Calculation Methodologies I am involved as the industry representative in consultation with DCLG on the ‘Buildings other than Dwellings’ Regulations ADL2A and ADL2B. So what more for 2012/13? Well, everything from Eurocodes, European Window Energy Labelling, Green Deal, Ecodesign and BIM to the Green Guide and BS EN 15804:2012 Sustainability of Construction Works. Environmental Product Declarations.

Aluminium and Sustainability Projects

Justin Ratcliffe with Rizwan Imtiazi, Crossrail at the 1st Action Programme on Responsible Sourcing (APRES) Conference, Loughborough University, November 2011.

Windows Sustainability Action Plan Annual Report 2012 In 2010 CAB contributed to the Windows Sustainability Action Plan which is owned and overseen by the Windows Sustainability Partnership (WSP), a group made up of representation across the windows supply chain. In the last year CAB was elected Chair of WSP while it prepared its inaugural annual report, an activity coordinated by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The report captured evidence of the impacts on each product type, including aluminium, across their lifecycle and was launched at Ecobuild 2012. It can be freely accessed on the Defra website (www.defra.gov.uk) and is also available from CAB. The International Aluminium Institute (AIA) has established a number of global sustainability objectives on which the Action Plan highlights progress. For example: • Between 1990 and 2010 the aluminium sector achieved its 10% target reduction in smelter electrical energy per tonne of aluminium.

CAB

Council for Aluminium in Building

• Between 2006 and 2020 there was a target reduction in energy use per tonne of alumina of 10%. A 9% reduction was achieved between 2006 and 2010. • To increase the proportion of bauxite mining land rehabilitated annually. Annual rehabilitation area of existing bauxite areas is equal to the average annual area being opened up. In this steady state environment, bauxite mining is ‘land area footprint neutral’ and sustainable.

Other Activities CAB is finalising its generic aluminium environmental profile work with BRE in 2012 and continues to promote aluminium’s long service life. To this end the Association is undertaking research with the Department of Architecture & Built Environment at the University of Nottingham into aluminium and durability, initially through a pilot case study.

Technical Conference

Conference Speakers (from left to right): Giles Willson; Diego Cuevas; Dr Jacqueline Glass; Justin Ratcliffe; Monika Green; Patrick England and Colin Grace

CAB’s 6th Annual Technical Conference in Stratford was entitled “Achieving a Sustainable Business Future”. The event provided guidance on how companies could establish and maintain sustainability, not only in terms of products, materials and services, but also ‘business sustainability’. The five presentations were: • ‘Taking responsibility for sustainability in the construction materials supply chain’, Dr Jacqueline Glass, Senior Lecturer in Architecture & Sustainable Construction - Loughborough University • ‘Development of responsible sourcing schemes for the Construction Industry’, Monika Green, Committee Manager Sustainability BSi • ‘BIPV and Aluminium’, Diego Cuevas, Business Development USA - Onyx Solar Energy • ‘The Green Deal, the UK Government initiative for improving the energy efficiency of existing building stock’, Giles Willson, Director for Technical Affairs – GGF

• ‘Achieving sustainability through refurbishment’, Colin Grace, Director Commercial - Windows & Doors (CWD) The conference focused on the responsible sourcing of aluminium products, the need to design products to last as long as possible, refurbishment where possible for extended life and finally the need to recycle at the highest recovery rates currently in excess of 95%. Delegates were introduced to an incentive scheme currently being developed by the Government in co-operation with businesses known as the ‘Green Deal’. The scheme was designed to provide funding to stimulate business for energy efficient products, such as replacement windows, with a view to improving the energy efficiency of the UK’s existing building stock. A niche market opportunity highlighted at the conference was the exciting development of transparent photovoltaic’s which received a very positive reaction. Recognising that government cut-backs have led to a shift away from new build towards refurbishment, the conference concluded with one of the UK’s refurbishment contractors providing an insight into the current business opportunities in that sector.

Ecobuild 2011 ExCel London March 2011

CAB Aluminium Area at Ecobuild 2011

With an estimated 56,000 visitors and over 1,300 exhibitor stands at the 2011 Ecobuild exhibition, the organisers, IBE, have successfully created a UK construction exhibition which we have not seen for the last couple of decades. Heading up the highly successful Aluminium Area, the Council for Aluminium in Building’s 150 square metre island site included 7 CAB member companies. The ‘dropin’ lounge, hosted by CAB, offered visitors an insight into the latest issues regarding aluminium in construction and technical support was on hand to answer direct questions about standards and sustainability. Some of the latest sustainability information on the various materials used for fenestration has been

published in the form of the ‘Windows Sustainability Action Plan’ published by Defra, which was the subject of one of the many fringe events taking place at the show. A new body, the ‘Windows Sustainability Partnership’ (WSP), has emanated from this project with the support of the Waste and Resources Action Plan (WRAP), will be chaired by some of the material organisations and bodies involved on a rotating basis – CAB being chair for the inaugural year. See page 10 for more details. CAB will be exhibiting at the next Ecobuild in March 2012.

Breakfast Network Meetings

Breakfast Network meeting in Coventry, February 2011

Breakfast Network meeting at Reebok Stadium, Bolton, December 2011

During 2011 CAB held four exclusive Breakfast Network events in Coventry, Glasgow, Maidstone and Bolton which provided valuable market insight to over 200 members in a concise format. The Coventry event saw CAB welcome two senior construction industry professionals Tony Mrowicki, RIBA Client Design Advisor and Director of Design & Build Solutions and Mark Ramessa, BAM Regional Supply Chain Manager. The speakers were keen to encourage early design involvement to ensure projects were both value engineered and sustainable. For the second presentation, the audience was split into teams for a classroom style discussion on issues such as the benefits and risks associated with reducing the number of subcontractors used and tender strategies.

At Bolton’s Reebok Stadium, James Abraham, Economist at Emap Glenigan, offered a forecast for the building industry to 2015. The report showed little or no growth overall for 2012/2013 but highlighted one or two key public sector projects such as Crossrail, which included the upgrading of around 200 stations that could require members’ products and services. Shaun Whitlock, Systech Solicitors then offered delegates an overview of the latest revisions to the Construction Act (1st October 2011). The Act made specific reference to contracts, payment terms and agreements to enable sub-contractors a fair cash flow for work completed. Shaun detailed how it protected sub-contractors, particularly when they were expected to proceed on the basis of a ‘letter of intent’.

Members’ Meeting Merseyside Maritime Museum Liverpool 31 March 2011

Dr. Noble Francis addressing the mini-conference

Over 150 members and their guests travelled to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, Liverpool to enjoy the Council for Aluminium in Building’s (CAB) first Regional Meeting of 2011. The key part of the event, held in one of the converted warehouses at Albert Dock, was a dynamic miniconference entitled ‘Key economic, technological and communication issues for our sector in 2011 and beyond’. There was additional added value for members beforehand with a brief interim report by Robert Palmer of Palmer Market Research on his ‘Glazing Markets in Great Britain – 2011 Edition’. CAB’s Marketing Committee had provided detailed feedback at the design stage of the report which will be inclusive of all the major fenestration materials. For the first time a measure of the market for solar shading (brise soleil) will be included. The conference speakers included Dr. Noble

Francis, Economics Director of the Construction Products Association, who gave a report on the current state of the UK construction market and offered detailed interpretation of the forecast ahead. The second speaker, Craig Duxbury, Group Account Director of IAS b2b Marketing, gave a detailed analysis of how businesses are rapidly moving towards the Internet to undertake detailed marketing of their products using just social media and integrated website design. Craig offered an insight into recent successful campaigns in the construction industry that included the use of Twitter, Linkedin, Flickr and Facebook. Finally, Stephen Warburton, Senior Design Manager (North) of Lend Lease offered an insightful presentation on the changing market sector and the key developments taking place within their business.

Members’ Meeting Sculpture Gallery Woburn Abbey 28 September 2011

Gareth Smith addressing the mini-conference

CAB’s Regional meeting and miniconference in September was held at the prestigious Sculpture Room at Woburn Abbey with the event being well attended by over 100 members and their guests. The mini-conference programme included some top line speakers, Simone Starnini, Head of the Façades Department at Laing O’Rourke, Gareth Smith, Solutions Director, Wincanton (supply chain specialists), and Pritesh Patel, Director at Pauley Creative, a digital marketing company. Simone had worked on some of the UK’s most iconic buildings and gave an overview as to the changing role of the specifier. Many main contractors today, such as Laing O’Rourke, had their own facade departments as the facade is one of the crucial elements of any building structure, both in physical and aesthetic attributes.

Gareth introduced to the delegates a new approach to site deliveries of building products. Rather than deliveries being made by all suppliers on the contract with the associated storage problems, particularly on city sites, materials are delivered to one of their own nearby warehouses. Deliveries of materials are then called off just when they are needed reduced wastage on site as well as construction costs. Pritesh focused on search engine and social media marketing, looking specifically at optimising websites, converting visitors into leads and measuring conversion. One key element was not simply to focus upon visits or searches but to measure outcomes or goals such as ‘confirmation’ pages. He emphasised that social media was useful for everything from raising brand awareness and brand monitoring to reducing PR and advertising costs and customer service.
