Grey Roots Museum Partners With Grey Owen Sound Métis For 2008 Community Picnic

T

he June 21st Grey Owen Sound Métis picnic is fast approaching and we have a new venue this year! The Grey Roots Museum, just southwest of Owen Sound, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The picnic is to celebrate Aboriginal Day. Please note that this year’s picnic is on a Saturday (not Sunday) and does NOT take place at Harrison Park in Owen Sound! Local Métis council and special guests will join together at 1:00 pm for a “grand entrance” to the Grey Roots site.

October Rendezvous Registration Dates & Times Set

T

he upcoming October Rendezvous will be held on October 8, 2008 in Lafontaine, near Midland with a great fish fry and a plethora of crafts and exhibits for all to enjoy. Registration takes place at 12:00 noon at the Lafontaine Community Centre and the fish supper will begin at 6:00 pm.

You can show support by wearing sashes and/or traditional Métis garb. The traditional potluck lunch will take place following the grand entrance. In addition, “buffalo dogs”& beverages will be served to guests. This event is a great opportunity for all Métis cardholders, plus their entourages, to become better acquainted with the beautiful Grey Roots facility. We will be permitted free access to the museum, including all on-site exhibits, throughout the afternoon. Games and other fun activities for the youth are planned, so be sure to bring the whole family. Three music bands have been secured, including Tim & Dave

Dillon of London, Brenda Willis of southern Grey County, and Rudy & Jean Couture of Owen Sound. Prize draws will be made for guests throughout the day. Scott Carpenter, well-known by local Métis, will have his exhibit set up on the Museum grounds that day and will be a prominent part of the entire day’s proceedings. Grey Roots is located on the Owen Sound bypass, just west of the traffic lights at Hwys 6 & 10 at Rockford. Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Report

T

hank you to everyone who supports the AHWS Program with your presence and presents. I was touched by the numbers who lent their voices to the AHWS Renewal Meeting. To those men and women who offer their ongoing service through volunteering with our program, you benefit our community in so many ways and you are so appreciated. Truly you are very special people. From the 7 Sacred Grandfather Teachings, we know: “Zaagidwin -- To know love is to show kindness. To know love is to know peace.” Summer at AHWS Ongoing Look for our display throughout June at the Community Living Day Program site beside City Hall. Low Impact Aerobics Our exercise mornings Tuesdays and Thursdays, will be devoted to the Community Garden and walking. Our walks take us to historic sites and natural indigenous plantations. Join us at 10:00 am to benefit your heart, mind and spirit. Beadwork Circle Many squares completed, we welcome you to join us the second Monday each month, 1:30 pm. for beadwork. We are applying beaded squares on to a symbol of the Hudson's

Bay blanket. Some of the finished squares are simple and some more complex, but each tells a story. Jackie Brown, an artist with beads, has created “The Gathering” which incorporates stories of culture, childhood, and the beaders and visitors to the Centre. It is stunningly beautiful. You do not need experience to join us, we are glad to share knowledge with you and welcome your creative ideas. Community Garden Our garden has 'weathered' the winter and is open again for teaching, learning, planting, and growing. We have hung our new colours and have thanked our Mother Earth for new beginnings. There are three plots available at the time of this writing. United Way Back Pack giveaway is slated to take place again this year. Contact me for details. Upcoming: June 4 11:00 Pot Luck Truth and Reconciliation Action Group June 11 Inclusive Communities Meeting 10:00 am June 20 Family Fun Day downtown Owen Sound.
