welcome!
The economic crisis has been good for Giving Europe. You might think: ‘That Van der Velde has gone mad’. Certainly not, and neither have you! For maybe you are one of those distributors, who during the crisis, have opted for Giving. Let me explain what I mean. In the difficult years, which – fortunately – are behind us because the economic recovery has started, distributors saw their turnover and margin go down. Due to this they took a close look at their purchasing. A large number of price-conscious distributors took their chance with us and, for many of them, Giving Europe is now a preferred supplier. Therefore, we have been fortunate enough to be able to welcome a great number of new partners, and of course, this makes us very happy. They have experienced that our proposition – good and affordable quality – is based on truth. And that is good for us and for you. Because, why would you pay more than necessary for quality products, focused sales support and quick service?

Suppliers TOGETHER
STRONG FOR CSR
The European branch federation EPPA (European Promotional Products Association) has put self regulation, particularly in the area of CSR, on the agenda. Giving Europe is one of the suppliers, that takes the lead in this process. In the first issue of Expression we have stated that we hoped that branch organisations - and certainly the EPPA with which many national European branch organisations are affiliated - would use our stringent CSR code as an example. The suppliers working together within the EPPA have now agreed to jointly invest in order to arrive at one Code of Conduct in which CSR (from source till waste) is
giving europe news magazine
the central point. After all, everything which concerns CSR supersedes the individual interests of suppliers (and distributors). Working together in the area of self regulation reduces also the chance of governmental intervention.
Hallmark
The suppliers within EPPA´s Steering Committee have also agreed to develop an e-learning model so as to be able to work with the Code of Conduct. Also the development of a hallmark for the European industry is in Its planning stage, as well as the care for accreditation and independent issuance and testing of company processes in the build-up to this hallmark.

For the second consecutive year Giving Europe Italy participated with this striking black stand in the Promotion Trade Exhibition in Milan in January of this year. “We intentionally opted for black and the absence of product samples in order to communicate clarity, simplicity and distinction,” according to Stefano Zaccaria, director of the Italian Giving. During the three days of the fair Giving Italia distributed more than 1,100 catalogues to at least 850 professional visitors.
Win-win situation
Zaccaria: “We were particularly looking for medium-sized distributors with a good market coverage in their area. With them we want to build up a strong bond to allow us to work as partners. We are convinced that in an economy, which is again slowly picking up, we can - through our selective partner policy - create a win-win-situation for both parties in order to benefit from the opportunities which will arise.”

EUROPEAN
PRODUCTS BRANCH
OPTIMISTIC AGAIN
As a result of several investigations we can conclude that the European products branch is climbing out of the economic valley again. Germany seems to be the front runner. The German promotional products industry is considered to be one of the first benefitting from the recovering economy. Promotional product branches in many other European countries will follow this year, according to several surveys. In the year 2010 the German product industry reached a turnover of Euro 3,43 billion, a rise in relation to 2009 when the turnover amounted to Euro 2,97 billion, according to the GWW (‘Gesamtverband der Werbeartikelwirtschaft’ ~’General Association of the Promotion Articles Economy’). Also the Austrians have closed the year 2010 successfully. In total the Austrian products branch quoted a turnover of Euro 520 million, a rise of 8% compared to 2009. The Austrian branch organisation VÖW expects that 2011 will be a good year in view of the economy that is picking up. The branch organisation expects that at the end of the year a great many promotional product companies will, this year (almost) reach the level again of the top year 2008. In 2010 Dutch distributors realized a sales increase of around 3%, after a drop of 10% in turnover 2009. This year, in Holland we count on a growth of 9%.
Improvement of positions
Due to the economical crisis of the past two years a number of - particularly locally operating - distributors have discontinued or reduced their activities. The turnover they used to realize has ended up with their colleagues. Moreover, there is a definite impression that the sales of all sorts of small companies in the periphery of the branch which also thought they could get a piece of the pie of that big market - have gone down strongly. Because of this, the ‘traditional’ specialized and competent distributors have managed to improve their positions. With all figures, one has to consider that not all distributors have neither realised an increase, nor experienced a (severe) relapse. Everywhere there have been noticeable peaks, both downward and upward. They are averages, but they do say something about the position of distributors during the past years and this year, which has been welcomed with optimism by the majority of the distributors in Europe.

PRODUCT CONTROL
GIVING EUROPE LEAVES NOTHING TO CHANCE! At its head office in Tiel (NL), Giving Europe has established a department which solely deals with checking the compliance with the European legal and regulatory framework concerning promotional products. This way, Giving Europe can undertake everything to deliver products which comply with the rules.
8
All products which are traded, are confronted with the European legal and regulatory framework which is becoming more stringent and complex. Textiles, cosmetics, toys, crockery, writing material, packaging: there is no product group escaping RoHS, REACH, WEEE, CE certificate, Ftalates, Cadmium, Toy safety regulations, Consumer
Protection Laws, Fire Safety Regulations, Eco label, and so on. A complicated subject which in our opinion should not end up on your plate. That’s what we are here for.
Certified test authorities
In order to gain insight in the composition and safety of a product, an analysis is needed, which is carried out by a testing authority certified by the government. Giving Europe has its products tested by renowned and recognized bodies such as SGS, Intertek, TÜV, CTS, Veritas and CMA. Which requirements should an article actually fulfil? First of all what you may expect concerning performance. A thermos flask must indeed keep a hot drink hot and a cold one must indeed stay cold, a felt-tip pen must colour without faltering and an inflatable beach ball is not supposed to deflate without reason. But that is only the tip of the iceberg.
Green white beach balls
Take for instance our green white inflatable beach ball, article number 9620-04. Such a beach ball must be supple, so that – in a non-inflated state - it easily fits into a bag. In order to make the material of such a beach ball flexible, the chemical substance ftalate is used. This may only be the permitted ftalate, and then
giving europe news magazine
{ what’s going on }

!
starTs at the source only in a concentration of less than 0.1 mass percent. SGS has established that the colour green contains 0.005% of the approved ftalate DEHP and that is far below the permitted limit of 0.1%. The white material contains 0.019% DEHP ftalate, and that is also well below the legal limit of 0.1%. Therefore, our beach ball complies more than sufficiently with the legal requirements for the usage of ftalates. But there is more than just ftalates. Another aspect is for example the valve. The valve must close properly once the ball has been inflated. However, it may absolutely not loosen easily, because there is the danger of suffocation if a toddler should unexpectadly put it in his/her mouth. Of course, also the valve of our beach ball is perfectly in order. But you see, with just a simple product like a beach ball, it is not a walkover in the area of legislation before it is allowed to go into the market!
Hot issue: compliance
Compliance is a hot issue in the promotional products industry, because Corporate Responsibility as such, and Corporate Social Responsibility for corporations, especially the big ones, is becoming increasingly important. Also in their marketing communication, and with that also in the area of purchasing their premiums
and promotional gifts. Also for Giving Europe CSR is an important issue. Dealing responsibly with people, planet & profit is in our opinion a spearhead for a good and healthy future of the whole branch, and that is where your and our interests lie. For this reason we have also drawn up our own Code of Conduct, which has the chain responsibility in optima forma as starting point (see also www.givingeurope.nl/ giving-europe/mvo). All our manufacturers and suppliers in the Far East must endorse our Code of Conduct. After all, the best control already starts at the source.
Extra security for you
Our new legal department is an extra tool to put our vision on sustainable thinking & doing into practice. Our expert staff follows closely the current legal and regulatory framework. We do not want to leave anything to chance. And that means extra security for you vis-Ă -vis your end customers! Do you have any questions or would you like to have more information? Then please contact your account manager. For more detailed information on the various laws and rules we kindly refer you to our corporate website www.givingeurope.com under the tab legal and regulatory framework.

China keeps the promotional products branch busy. Rising raw material prices, foreign exchange fluctuations and a growing shortage of manual workers in the factories cause substantial price increases. However, higher purchase prices do not necessarily have to be bad for you.
10
HIGHER PURCHASE PRICES ARE NOT NECESSARILY BAD Promotional products are becoming more expensive. From bags to umbrella’s, from wood related articles through to textiles. The prices of raw materials in China have been on the rise for more than a year. The greatest price increases concern cotton and oil, but also the legal and regulatory framework has the effect of soaring prices. The more stringent (environmental) requirements which raw materials have to comply with, also hit the wallet, and the minimum wages established in China, obligatory health insurances and dismissal compensations increase the wage costs. Therefore, there are various causes for the price rises. Market analysts agree that most factors are structural.
Fierce developments
BRANCH MUST RESET TO BENEFIT FROM HIGHER PRICES
giving europe news magazine
Giving knows its way in China and therefore manages to produce, import and generously stock products at, even now, the sharpest possible prices. “With an average price increase for our products of 10%, we still belong to one of the cheaper suppliers,” according to director Stef van der Velde. “But what is happening in China is fierce. Partly the measures are benefitting the Chinese workers, and we simply welcome this within the framework of corporate social responsibility. On the other hand, it has repercussions on the functioning of the products branch. However, we just have to accept it and reset in order to deal with it properly as a branch, in order to benefit from the price increases at the end of the day.”
Generating more sales
Van der Velde: “Think of the years of price and margin drops which are behind us. Since 2001, when we started with Giving, the recommended prices in the branch have gone down by no less than 60%. As a consequence, importers and distributors had to do almost double the volume in order to maintain the turnover and there was a fight for every cent of margin. Now the whole branch – nobody excluded – will have to carry through price increases. If the distributors in their sales efforts will focus more on their margin and the end customer does not lower his budget, and it looks that way, then this may lead to more sales and a higher margin. Distributors generate more sales without having to do extra work for this.” “Keep making your end customers aware of the fact that promotional products are still cheap in comparison with other forms of advertising. The yield per invested Euro is high and effective,” according to Van der Velde.

GERMANY MOVES TO MODERN BUSINESS CENTRE
Mid-March Giving Europe Germany moved to a bigger facility, nearby the centre of Bremen. During recent years this area has been developed into a modern business centre. The partners from these regions can reach the establishment quickly and simply, because the new premises are situated in the immediate vicinity of both the big railway station and the airport. From mid-May you are very welcome to see the new showroom. Please call us beforehand, so that we know that you will be coming and we can set aside plenty of time for you
Growth expectation
Giving Europe Germany started in July 2007 with 6 employees. Meanwhile the establishment has grown within four years to a staff of 11. New employees are Malte Steen, who has the position of assistant account manager Southern Germany and Stefanie Heins, who as assistant account manager is coresponsible for the partners in Mid Germany and Austria. Considering the positive development of the economy particularly in Germany, but also in other European countries - Giving Europe Germany expects to have to recruit even more new staff this year and the following years. Why did you choose Giving Europe as your supplier? We bought a small company which had Giving Europe as supplier and here we felt very welcome as a customer. Even though we are only a small company. What do you think of Giving Europe? From our perspective Giving Europe is the most exciting supplier at this moment. Perhaps because the company is still relatively young and fit. What are the strong points of Giving Europe? A wide assortment, very competitive prices, fast deliveries and let us not forget an outstanding website. In your opinion, what is lacking in Giving Europe´s service? Supply of articles with prints from stock, not only with prints of the “Fast East” orders.

sportgadgets Especially big companies like to work with promotional products at important sports events. After all, with this ‘tangible advertising’ they generate an enormous exposure for their brand or product name Every year each country has its own national sport moments. And the international sports year 2012 is approaching again with the European Championships Football and the Olympic Games, which will take place in London. Which gadgets are most popular? In America they compiled a top 10 list. Without doubt this list also applies to Europe!
1. LANYARDS, KEYCORDS 2. T-SHIRTS 3. CAPS, SHAWLS 4. NOISE MAKERS 5. STADIUM CUSHIONS / FOLD UP CHAIRS 6. STICKERS / TATTOO STICKERS 7. WATER BOTTLES 8. TELEPHONE COVERS 9. MINI FOOTBALLS 10. STRESS BALLS Careful with print Pay attention: the symbols of the Olympic Games and the EC Football of the UEFA (and other intellectual properties of these organisations) cannot be used just like that on promotional products. Their use is reserved for the official sponsors. Those who abuse this, may face hefty fines and/or be forced to destroy or recall the challenged products. Also, be careful with words and expressions which are directly linked to the Olympic Games, also in relation to ‘London 2012’. However, there are still plenty of creative possibilities left to convey the sports events in word and picture. Working in a shoe polish factory
Charles Dickens was born in Kent on the 7th of February 1812 and moved with his family to London when he was 10 years old. As at home poverty ruled, the young Charles often had to skip

school to go and work. At the age of twelve he already worked 10 hours a day in a shoe polish factory. The conditions, under which the workers had to live and work,
were an important subject in his later work. When he turned fifteen, he came to work at a lawyers’ office. He taught himself stenography and after some time he became reporter of parliamentary proceedings for the newspaper the Morning Chronicle. During that time, from his journalistic work his
9
first literary work came about in the form of descriptions of the London life and the life in the country. Later on these were published in one volume under the title Sketches by Boz, the nick name of his younger brother Moses, who always had a cold. Socially inspired He became very well known through The Pickwick Papers. After its success, in quick succession Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge were published. In many cases he exposed social abuses, but it was never done at the expense of a good story structure and strong character description. Also humour makes out an important part of his narrative style. In 1842 he travelled to the

United States, where amongst other things he pleaded for the abolition of slavery. In 1843 his first and most famous of his Christmas stories was published: A Christmas Carol, a story that is still performed in all sorts of dramatizations and is adapted for the screen, particularly during the Christmas season. His most famous novels are no doubt David Copperfield, which to a large extent is autobiographical, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. The book A tale of two cities is number 7 on the list of bestsellers of all times. 200 million copies have been sold! Charles Dickens died at the age of 58 in 1870. Through Queen Victoria’s intercession, but very much against his own will, he was buried in the Poets’ Corner
in the Westminster Abbey in London. (source: Wikipedia. If you would like to know more: just enter Charles Dickens on Google!)
Dickens in the spotlight
From America right through to New Zealand, Charles Dickens will be in the spotlight at the end of 2011 and in 2012 with TV series, theatrical performances, festivals and speeches! Many countries have a Charles Dickens museum. In December 2011 the Strauhof museum in the Swiss Zürich kicks off the jubilee year, and also the BBC, which will start with the broadcasting of documentaries about Dickens in December 2011. All throughout 2012 many Dickens theatrical

PARTY AT THE
PSI Düsseldorf!
PRESENT
FOR YOU FROM US
For our partners we like to do a bit more. That is why you receive from us 4 months free use of European Sourcing, the nr. 1 search engine in Europe for distributors of promotional products and promotional textiles. The theme of our participation in the PSI Düsseldorf 2011 was the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Giving Europe. Now on to the 20th, together with you! 16 “With some 1000 partners we celebrated this, spread over two evenings, in a Dutch way – with very Dutch delicacies such as ‘oil balls’ and herring. After all, Holland is our homeland, where we started in 2001, at that time with a warehouse of 800 square meters. Now our warehouse covers a surface of 20,000 square meters. In the course of those ten years we have worked hard to substantiate the addition ‘Europe’. With success, because we have come to feel also very well at home in Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Russia and Turkey. Meanwhile in these countries we work together very pleasantly with a great number of partners,” according to Stef van der Velde, director
Giving Europe. Compliments At the PSI we presented the unique Giving Partner Program, on which we received many enthusiastic reactions. We introduced the new exclusive brands Route 66 and GETBAG and the new Impression catalogue. Van der Velde: “We
got many compliments on the new catalogue. The newest edition was even labelled the ‘best ever’, more than once!” Particularly the lively coloured fold up plastic stepladder with
anti-slip surface (art.nr. 9556) appears to be a topper in the collection! Satisfied “We have used our presence at the PSI to ask as many partners as possible about their opinion about Giving. And of course there are customers who have critical comments. It may sound odd, but we do appreciate that. Because then we get to work to solve the dissatisfaction. But the majority of our customers indicated to be very satisfied about the service during the past year, the price quality relation, the stock position and the contact with the regular account managers. With all feedback we can build further at an even better Giving Europe in 2011.”
