Dynamism of the town is reflected in a great number of manifestations and sports events that take place during the whole year. On the basis of unofficial data Temerin has the longest street in Serbia – today’s Novosadska Street or former Maršala Tita Street. It is 12, 5 kilometers long. When you come from Novi Sad you first enter Bački Jarak, there are 142 house numbers. When you enter Temerin the house numbers start from 2 to 694.
A walk through history Temerin was first mentioned in 1332, in one Pope’s receipt for the payment of Pope’s tenth, which was issued to parish priest Laurenti de Temeri. Temerin probably got the name after him. At that time the place was the part of Hungarian Kingdom and it was mostly inhabited by Roman Catholics. Turkish period began after 1526. The oldest and the first census of the residents of Serbian village Temerin was found among the account books of Szeged territory for 1560/1561 tax year. On the basis of taxes it can be seen that the residents produced corns and vegetables and were engaged in cattle breeding and beekeeping. After liberation from the Turkish reign, during the whole 18th century and furthermore Temerin was a part of Habsburg Monarchy and it belonged to Bodroška District (The biggest part of Bačka was Komorsko estate). The first military map of Temerin dates from 1783. The old Serbian village Temerin was drawn in it. The first primary school was founded in 1742. In their already rich and developed place, the residents of Temerin built Orthodox Church dedicated to St. Assumption of the Lord between 1746 and 1749. Besides the military maps, the church books also testify to the existence of the church. Some of these books are still kept in the village Đurđevo. The church was built of bricks, which is very important because the most of village churches were built of wood. In 1796 Temerin and Bački Jarak were sold to count Šandor Sečen for 80,000 forints. The colonization of Hungarians in the village Temerin started firstly because the count Sečen tried to provide workforce. It was followed by German settling in Bački Jarak, which was a Temerin’s moor until then. Since then Temerin has been a multinational community with the often fluctuation of population. The count Sečen’s attemp to turn Serbian people into serft resulted in removal of the Serbs from Temerin in 1800. They tore down their houses and the church and moved all building material to a new settlement which was named Đurđevo. In the 19th century Temerin was mostly inhabited by Hungarians. Between 1795 and 1804 the count Sečen ordered to build a representative building – a palace or a kastel. In 1799 Temerin was declared as town and got the right to have four livestock market a year. The Catholic Church was built in 1804 and the “old school” was built in 1835. Temerin was completely burnt down during the revolution 1848-49 and its residents fled to the north in Bačka Topola, Mali Iđoš and Čantavir. After two or three years most residents returned to their homes. In 1860 a merchant Antal Fernbah from Apatin bought the Sečen’s property and the kastel. His inheritors were the owners of the estate until the agrarian reform in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The building of the main road started during the reign of Marija Terezija. The residents of Temerin continued to invest in this road in the next decades. At that time there was a custom to put crosses with Jesus instead of stone foundation. One of them can be seen at the exit from Temerin towards Bečej. For a long time the main On 20 July (St. Ilija’s day) in 1853 Temerin was hit by bad weather. Heavy storm and ice destroyed the fields. The Hungarian people swore that they won’t work on that day in the future and proclaimed it as their patron saint’s day. The custom of blessing the new bread followed by street procession was renovated in 1991.
street was the first stop of the post carriages which came from Viena, and went to Temisoara and Brasovan via Petrovaradin. The residents of Staro Đurđevo retold that first houses were built in 1900. The history remembers that in the thirties of the 20th century poor families were put out the plots to lease. In such a way a dilapidated road surrounded by marshes started to look like street, which decades later became the longest and most populated street in former Yugoslavia and today’s Serbia. Railroad Novi Sad – Temerin – Bečej was put into operation in 1899 and it stimulated the industrial development of Temerin. The brickyard and the first steam mills started to work. Temerin became one of the most important commercial centers in the southeastern Bačka. The new period in the history and economics of the settlement started in 1920. Agricultural authorities from Belgrade and Novi Sad directed the Serbian volunteers from the First World War to settle Temerin. The settlers were originally from Bosnia, Herzegovina, Lika and other areas. They colonized the new settlement which they called Staro Đurđevo in remembrance of the old Serbian settlement in Temerin. At the place of today’s Bački Jarak there used to be an old settlement which was mentioned in 1267 under the Slav name Ireg, Irgud, but also Vreg that means ditch. This name comes from the trench existing here since the Roman period. Bački Jarak was founded in 1787 as the last colonized settlement of the emperor Joseph II. The first settlers were from Virtemberg, Hesen-Nasau, Falacka and Alzas. Until the Second World War BačkiJarak was inhabited by Germans of Evangelical confession and it had a population of about 2000 inhabitants. The place was called Jarak till the First World Ward. With forming the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes “Bački” was added in order to distinguish it from the place in Srem with the same name. The residents of Jarak were the count Sečen’s serfs from 1798 to 1848. He was the owner of the village and he ruled it. The first place of worship was the house built by the authorities. The new church was consecrated in 1823. In 1946 a great number of people from Krajina, Bosnia and Herzegovina settled Bački Jarak after the Germans had been forced to leave their homes at the end of the Second World War. Sirig is the smallest and the youngest settlement in the municipality of Temerin. Small settlements Ka mendin and Savez as well as some ranches are an integral part of it. It was mentioned in the 15th century in the historical records. It is supposed that today’s named of the settlement is connected to the name of moor Sirig. Today’s settlement started to developed intensively in 1927 when the families of Serbian volunteers, Salonika warriors from Bođani and Vajska inhabited the area of Sirig. They were displaced due to floods of the Danube in 1924 and 1926. Later 25 families of volunteers from the village Sokolac in Banat moved to Sirig. Sirig reached the significant development after the Second World War.

Sečen’s palace Sečen’s Palace in Temerin gives a special touch to local history and culture. The walls over two centuries old remember a lot of significant events. Important people and famous families lived there. Kastel was built in 1795 by Sečen’s family. Its architects are unknown, but according to some telling the church, the reception room and the eastern part of the palace were built on the basis of the plans made by famous canal constructor Jožef Kiš. According to available data, Sečen’s family ruled Temerin for many years and lived in Kastel where they led a very luxurious life. Although it was hard time, full of revolutions and different troubles, the Sečen’s family was appreciated by serfs. In one chronicle Karolj Sečen was called “the father of his serfs” because he sacrificed himself
The Sečen’s palace is the object of clear stylistic characteristics, of the elegant and simple Baroque Classicism. The residential noble object has been preserved in its authentic shape. As a significant cultural property Temerin’s palace was put under the protection in 1949. Nowadays the palace is used as the object of the secondary school “Lukijan Mušicki”.
for them and gave them grain and money. During the conflicts in 1848 the Sečen family left the palace that had sustained a lot of damages. In 1874 the last descendant of the family sold the property and the kastel to a rich merchant Antal Fernbah and that was the beginning of the new period in the life of kastel. Thanks to family Fernbah and Ana Fernbah especially, the palace and the park around it looked like castles in France and England. Since they were very rich the Fernbahs owned the whole Temerin until the agrarian reform of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1920. After the agrarian reform the Fernbahs sold the palace to Matković family and they were the owners of the palace till the end of the Second World War. After the nationalization, the administration of the National Committee was staying there.
The Old Park The Sečen’s palace is surrounded by the Old park that stretches on the area of 20 acres. The wall made of bricks and the walled ditch used to shelter the park from the outside world. The best gardeners made this park at the time of Sečen’s family. When in the 19th the Fernbah family became the owners of the palace, their gardener Vince Sandlek transformed the park into a decorative garden – arboretum. The gardens were full of flowers, decorative plants and fountains. The park was decorated with two gazebos, one in the garden and the other on the hillock by the lake. Since the beginning of the 20th century the garden planted with selected and unusual trees has been adorned with fountain and sculptures. The family and the quests used to spend most of the day in the park behind the palace. On Sundays, the ordinary people would go for a walk in the park, but on the other days of the week only students and intellectuals were allowed to enter the beautiful gardens. Among the gardeners who arranged the park, Mikloš Terteli from Temerin stands out. He was educated gardener who fulfilled his duty for almost 20 years, during the fifties and sixties of the 20th century and he did it with love and care. The park reached the bloom while he was working in it. Nowadays park is maintained by the Public Communal Company Temerin. The appearance of the park is enriched by the lake and there is a new jogging track for recreational activities. The park was put under the protection in 2001 and it was classified as a monument of nature of the third category.
Native House “Tajhaz”
Homeland house in Temerin is the last example of boarded facade in the shape of sunbeams on this territory.
This Panonian lowland type of the house shows the tradition of national architecture of Hungarian residents in Temerin and the objects that were used every day and in special occasions in compliance with traditional and rural way of life. The house was shown in the cadaster map from 1892. The roof structure is angular and it is covered with thatch. The wall of the porch is covered with hand tools that remind of the former importance of hemp processing. The wooden washing machine made and patented by a carpenter Ujvari, represents a special curiosity. There are also saddler’s tools, an anvil for scythe sharpening, hand tool for maize shelling and the wheelwright tools. The fireplace in the kitchen was used for cooking. There are kitchen cupboard and a shelf with cutlery. The front room or the clean room is the nicest room in the house. It shows conditions from the first third of the 20th century. It was used as a guest room or a room for mothers with a new born baby. Everyday life of the family took place in the back room. A big furnace heated the room and the oldest family members had a priority to sit on footstool by it. The women weaved and knitted, the old men chopped tobacco leaves and children played in this room. The most important object in the front yard is the summer furnace. The small gate called kapidžik leads to the stable and the back yard. There are cribs for cattle and horses, different tools necessary for cattle and horse breeding, equipment for brooms making, carts, a tool used for separating hemp fibers. In experts’ opinion this is one of the best ethno houses in the area. The yard and outbuildings are used for art exhibitions, literary evenings and music programs during the year. It was opened on 20th July 2003. “Creative house” is a new object in the yard of the native house. It is a place where the artistic workshops of the associations of artist TAKT from Temerin are carried out. There is also a gallery as part of this object. The attic is aimed for the accommodation of quests and artists.
Ethno park “Brvnara” Ethno Park “Brvnara” in Bački Jarak is a unique open air museum. It is situated by the main transportation line at the entrance to the place from the direction of Novi Sad. Native museum collection of the ethnological and historical characteristic was founded on the initiative of the residents of Bački Jarak, the Serbian colonists from Bosanska Krajina. The idea of its foundation appeared in 1946 as a wish to keep the memories of homeland. The object was erected in 1978. The central object of this complex is “a log cabin” (“brvnara”) where the ethnological part of the permanent exhibition is placed. It was built of logs and it reminds of traditional houses of Dinaric area. It was main residence building, a place where the whole family gathered. It is twopart building divided into one bigger room called “house” and a smaller room with a brick stone. The new permanent exhibition was realized by the Museum of Vojvodina in 2012. It shows original museum items, historical documents and photo material, important for national culture and history of people from Krajina. In the yard of the house there are “vajat”a house for a young married couple; a “dairy” for keeping and preparing milk and dairy products and a barn for keeping and drying maize. All three objects are authentic, brought from the old area and it was made identical in this ethno corner. The mentioned objects fit into the space and together with the main building make an authentic environmental whole of yard from Krajina with residential and facility objects.
