hen a family set out to build their Anchorage home for themselves and their three children, they knew they wanted a calm oasis that overlooked gorgeous landscaping. The 6-bedroom, 4-fulland-3-half-bath home, built by Meridian and designed by Dan Grimm, gave the family the space they needed to entertain and enjoy.
The home’s design is described as having a Cape Cod exterior and Northeastern Coastal interior with blues, beiges and grays throughout. The family moved in almost two years ago to the open home on two acres of lush Jefferson County land; they often spot geese, deer, and birds visiting their backyard.

he master bedroom is calming, again with vaulted ceilings and archways and a fireplace while accessorized with grays, beiges and blues. The mantel in the master bedroom is also made of restored beams. “It’s calming … the colors are easy on the eyes,” the family says. The master bath displays clean lines, white surfaces and nickel fixtures. The walk-in shower shows off a blue mosaic-tiled accent wall, mixed with white and gray tile on the adjacent walls. Moving into the office, the room is adorned with pops of emerald green and gold in the Phillip Jeffries wallpaper and furniture. A personal touch of a stained
glass window in the room hangs on the wall and comes from a family member’s home state of Pennsylvania. The second floor is home to game, craft and piano rooms. The finished basement is divided by barn doors for the family’s movie room and game room on either side. The movie room holds a huge sectional for the group to cuddle and a wine closet for the adults to enjoy. A second office, gym and sauna complete the basement. The home is a good change from the family’s previous “dark and divided” property with “a lot of open space and light,” says the family. “It feels very calm and very warm at the same time.”

olford Built Homes was started by Ron Wolford in 1974. Together with his wife, artist Martha Wolford of Wolford Construction and Design (created in 2008), Martha’s reputation for “superior craftsmanship of luxury homes” has continued to grow. “We have won every major building-associated award, are the only local builder to be featured on MTV Cribs, and are a regular Best of Houzz award winner as voted on by over 25 million (monthly Houzz users),” says Martha. She also served as the Marketing Director for Wolford Built Homes. Martha Wolford created Wolford Construction and Design “to address the void in the market of luxury remodeling” and “has taken top honors for her creative floor plans and remodeling expertise.” She received her education at Parsons Paris, University of Florence in Italy, and Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Martha grew up in Anchorage, Kentucky, in “an equine-loving household devoted to showing horses.”
For the last 18 months, Martha has been working with a local homeowner to turn “a traditional, classical home into an 8000 square foot contemporary with breathtaking spaces and soaring ceilings.” For Martha, “It was the project of a lifetime, the most challenging I have ever done, and the most dramatic transformation - bright colors, exotic cabinets, unique tile. Most fun I have ever had!” Martha explains more about her process. “My involvement and attention are paramount. From initial ideas to floor plans to final finishes, I am involved 110% of the way. I think I care about these homes as much as

the client does! As an artist, I bring a fresh perspective to a traditional craft. I also go about a project with a lot of time spent planning, making decisions, and ordering selections. It is our goal to make the building and design process the least invasive it can be with no downtime.” With Martha on the project, the client doesn’t have to worry. “That’s what I do. We have a team that can handle every scenario. We are pros and have experts in every step of the building process.” Hands-free home living is a current trend that Martha sees as a long-term shift in home design. “From faucets to lighting, a focus on germ-free living will continue. Simply wave to turn on and off.” Although the technology is not new, app-operated living with smart devices has taken the trend further to control lighting, heating, and entertainment. Louisville area homeowners are also looking to “redefine current spaces for our shift in living with an emphasis on personal space,” expand exterior spaces to make the most of patios and porches, and update kitchens and baths. “I want to continue to work with specialty remodels, says Martha. “I love creating spaces and want the client to be in love with their home again.” As for new construction, “We have recently joined forces with builder Jon Boone who is known for his incredible craftsmanship and construction techniques.” According to Martha, they both “bring a keen knowledge of design trends and interpersonal relationship skills” and “promise to be a formidable pair in creating Louisville’s architectural icons of tomorrow.”

Imagine the history! “Evolving from firelight to gaslight to electric light,” they are “the largest supplier of decorative lighting in the state of Kentucky.” The Brecher family owned the company for three generations before selling it to the Branhams. William Branham represents the third generation of leadership in his family. “Lighting is so important to the look of a room. For the least amount of dollars invested, it has the power to change a room completely.”

Current trends include antiqued, brushed, and satin brass and gold fixtures - as opposed to shiny or polished. Traditional styles remain popular, but the designs are updated slightly with clean lines. Black fixtures are also among the bestselling. As for future trends on the lighting decor horizons, William predicts long-lasting, energy-efficient LED-integrated fixtures will be all the rage. Although Louisvillians tend to favor more traditional home decor, William says contemporary LED is starting to catch on in the area. Brecher’s Lighting is hopeful that they will carry on with their Annual Tent Sale in September 2021 after its unfortunate cancellation last fall. Myers + Co. Landscape Architecture recently won two awards for their work on a Louisville residence. The company earned the Kentucky Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects Merit Award for General Design – Constructed Residential Work in 2019 and the 2020 Association of Professional Landscape Designers Gold Award in the Small Gardens Category from the APLD International Landscape Design Awards Program. The awards were based on Romeo and Mary Ann Laureano’s St. Matthews front entry and garden renovation. The Laureano family wanted to bring their home to life by creating a beautiful and welcoming front entry with a classic, formal design. Boxwood hedges were layered with Hydrangea, Lilacs and a Bloodgood Japanese Maple. The project included removing and replacing the existing driveway, constructing a new front entry walkway and opening up an existing brick wall. Along the front entry, a hidden garden is revealed to delight guests as they approach the front door. Cobblestone pavers were installed for the driveway surface and a new Pennsylvania Bluestone walkway leads guests to the front door. A custom Bluestone border and circular banding were handcrafted to define the hidden courtyard. Crushed gravel was introduced into the

amily-owned and operated since 1972, Starview Greenhouses, Nursery, Garden Center, and Gift Shop in La Grange, Kentucky, has grown from a small single greenhouse to a sprawling selection covering over 3.5 acres. Manager Theresa Rahm’s grandparents were the original owners, followed by her three uncles, including her Uncle Ed Ott. Theresa, Uncle Ed, and two other cousins continue in the family business. “It’s a good atmosphere where all employees are treated like family.” Customers appreciate the “bench system” in the main greenhouse behind the Garden Center. After making your first selection, a staff member places it on a bench in the loading area and assigns a number. From then on, they will carry all of your remaining items to the
bench for you. When you’re finished shopping, the staff writes up a ticket. Simply pay in the Garden Center, pull your car around, give a staff member your bench number and receipt, and let them load up for you!

Starview Gift Shop’s unique yard decorations, candles, containers, and windchimes enhance outdoor living spaces. “We try to lean toward Made in the USA whenever possible.” The Garden Center carries garden chemicals, tools, and fertilizers. But “If we don’t have it, we will try to order it.”

common Types of vertical gardens:
Stacked planter boxes. This looks something like a ladder with several planter boxes as the rungs. These usually lean against the side of your home or hang suspended with chains. This type of vertical garden is best for plants that don’t vine or branch out.
f you love the idea of gardening, but find it challenging for a variety of reasons, you’re not alone. Gardening can be physically demanding, which is a struggle for many people. Traditional gardens also require a lot of unused ground space, which many of us don’t have to spare. Vegetable gardens can honestly be somewhat unsightly in an otherwise pristine backyard.
Wall pockets. This is often a sheet of felt or canvas with little pockets that plants tuck into. This would be hung from a wall or divider. This is usually used for non-vining plants.
If you’ve been put off by any of these factors, vertical gardening might be for you!
Trellises, “living walls” or arbors. Naturally vining plants are trained to climb these garden structures.
Vertical gardening is–as the name implies–the practice of growing plants up rather than out. While some plants need encouragement to go vertical, it’s a gardening style that just about anyone can do successfully.
String, stakes or cages. Vegetable gardeners often use supports for plants that naturally climb, like green beans.
The ways to achieve a vertical garden are virtually limitless. You can use everything from old fencing to used palettes to get growing. If you’ve never trained a plant to climb, the process is fairly simple. You need to identify what method the plant uses to climb and provide it with a material it can grab onto. Plants with those curly little tendrils like green beans need something small, like string or wire, to grasp. Plants that are “twiners” like morning glories or clematis use their leaves to grab on; because of that, they can climb thicker structures, like wooden trellis. Some plants are able to cling to just about any surface (Boston ivy), while others (climbing roses) need to be tied. Google is a tremendous resource in helping you understand what will go up!

Works in small spaces. If you don’t have much ground to dedicate to gardening, growing up can allow you to have more in a space that might otherwise be wasted! Less physically demanding. Aching knees and backs rejoice! Vertical gardening requires less stooping, kneeling, bending over and generally contorting your body than traditional growing setups. Even sunshine and watering. This setup allows you to make the most of the resources you have. Can increase yield. By allowing your plants to grow up and out, there is often more potential for crop production. Looks aesthetically appealing! You can create a garden that almost looks like a fixture of your home rather than… well, a garden.

Countertops Most people prefer stone countertops for their outdoor kitchens. Granite and soapstone are popular, durable options. Tile is a less expensive alternative that can allow some creative freedom. If you’re considering other materials, speak to an expert about how much maintenance and what potential problems you’re looking at down the road.
Cabinets Hands-down, the most popular choice for outdoor kitchen appliances, drawers and cabinets is stainless steel. It can stand up to outdoor conditions and it’s fairly easy to clean. It’s also easy to match to upgraded appliances and features you might add on later. But if you want a custom look, stainless steel can offer that too: with powder coat finishes, the cabinets can be any color or mimic a number of natural textures, including wood. Marine-grade polymers are gaining in popularity as an alternative. However, it may not be as long-lasting as stainless steel. And there’s the fact that it’s combustible. If you go this route, talk to your installer about what precautions you need to take. Some people like the look of masonry or stucco outdoor kitchens because it offers them the ability to completely customize their space. The downside to this option is that all that stone can be a real bear to install, and the setup will take up a lot of space in your yard.

It’s All About YOU! The old thinking about outdoor spaces was a focus on entertaining first: amenities were built for the enjoyment of friends and colleagues rather than the family living there! According to a houzz survey, nearly 4 out of 5 homeowners were focusing their home project plans on what would help them enjoy their own home more. And outdoor spaces were no exception. While it’s nice to dream about 4th of July barbeques and graduation parties, that’s really a fraction of the time you’ll be spending in your outdoor space. So instead of thinking how you’ll accommodate your guests, think first about how you and your closest loved ones will be using the space most often. If you’re thinking about your own use first, one thing you might downgrade right away is your grill space. Why sacrifice the space all year long to accommodate a monster grill that would serve maybe two or three parties a year? When the party rolls around, call a friend to bring over a backup grill, or rent one from a local party rental company. Also consider whether you really need a lot of seating space. Put it like this: would you rather have quantity or quality? Many homeowners are opting for more comfortable, luxurious seating over plentiful seating that’s not something they could really relax on when guests aren’t over.
