Letter from the editor

H

ow can you give an entire city a health and wellness check-up, from the streets all the way up to the top floor of its tallest building? First, we must stop and be mindful of the people within our metro area and evaluate their quality of living. Second, we look to the companies supporting our changing local economy and finding all sorts of new ways to give back to the community.

Third, and possibly the most important, we look at the people standing next to us, the ones who we interact with in Photo by Gary Barragan big ways and small, the ones we know well or not at all. When you look at them, it’s essential to realize that they are probably the same as you, with similar dreams, desires, and everyday experiences. We have all different financial situations and come from different backgrounds, but for me, my definition of success is to live each day to the best of my abilities and help even just one person feel like they are important and feel loved. If we can do that every day of our lives, I believe that we will notice big changes in our city. If we’re all pushing forward towards living healthy lifestyles, business growth, embracing a philanthropic heart, and supporting those around us in their professional and personal endeavors, we could all be stronger together. Louisville faces many challenges but we must not see them with a wave of sorrow and despair, believing that we can’t fix the problems we face. Making changes alone is impossible, but if we can reach out one of our hands to help others as we use our other hand to help ourselves and our families, the possibilities are endless.

Fine quality furniture, accessories and gifts for outside – and inside – your home!

As you turn each page of this issue, I hope that you will allow the spirit of Whitney Austin’s story of survival to impact your views on living mindfully, and a reminder to focus on your family. Perhaps even finding strength in the most challenging moments of your life and to advocate for a world without gun violence. The featured healthcare heroes have a wide variety of traditional care and alternative health options to assist you in living a healthier life. The other pages you turn will be full of articles from our writers, focusing on topics that might help you cultivate a serene home environment. It’s so important to find a tranquil haven within the four walls of your home.

We are here to help you find that special look for all occasions!

Last but not least, we shine a spotlight on a few fantastic local businesses, including restaurants and boutiques with a whole lot to offer that need our support to survive in a world increasingly dominated by digital commerce world. As my nephew passed this last month, I was reminded of his beliefs that life is too short to not to try new food, meet new friends, treat fellow Louisvillians kindly, shop locally, and take action to do what is right to make our city and the world the healthiest it can be. Much like the motto seen on the Kentucky flag; “United We Stand. Divided We Fall.” BELLA PORTARO-KUEBER Editor-in-Chief

Shakespeare

COMES ALIVE The Bard’s endlessly iconic plays live and breathe in Louisville every Summer. We might not have the Globe Theatre, but our beautifully lush Central Park might be the next best thing. Rocko Jerome brings the good word on some stellar Summer entertainment.

EATURING ASE WBRYANT COURTESY PHOTOS

henever you hear the name "Shakespeare," you might be thinking back to high school literature classes and impenetrable texts, Cliff Notes summaries, and tests that you found tough to pass. However, your mind might just be changed when you see these plays performed before your eyes, coming alive and in person under the beautiful Louisville Central Park sky at Kentucky Shakespeare. "We are all about making our performances fun and easy to enjoy," says Matt Wallace, Producing Artistic Director. "these plays are meant to be seen and heard, and once you/ve experienced them in a setting like this, you will understand why they have stood the test of time."

TO BENEFIT

The programs are performed every Summer, and attendees have come to expect a wide variety of entertainment. This year, the 59th season, is no different, with the comedic As You Like It, the historically fascinating Henry IV Part 2, and the tragic King Lear as the three main shows. Also, Louisville

TABLES 019

Ballet will be performing Cleopatra: Queen of Kings, Louisville Improvisors will be riffing on the Bard in the spontaneously hilarious Late Night Shakes, and last but not least, the junior troupe known as the Globe Players will be presenting Twelfth Night. Although the season has already begun, attendees will have the opportunity to see every play during July. "We want everyone to have a chance to see everything, so we make sure that there are a lot of opportunities," says Matt. This season's strong slate is in dedication to Bekki Jo Schneider, who was the former Producer of Kentucky Shakespeare and the immediate successor to founder Doug Ramey. The shows are performed by consummate professionals, feature astounding stage production, and are directed by brilliantly talented individuals. They are all free and open to the public, thanks to the largesse of donors including Brown Forman, the Kentucky Arts Council, Jefferson County, the Kentucky Tourism Board, and Fund for the

Arts. There's plenty of parking, activities for kids in the interactive Kids' Globe, and an astounding 28 food trucks offering a dizzying variety of delicious meals and snacks. There's also a bar set up by Brown Forman. Appropriate to the classic feeling of these performances, the beautiful Central Park environment is surrounded by Old Louisville, the nation's largest neighborhood of Victorian Era houses and buildings. "It feels deeply appropriate to have these plays in this surrounding area," Matt observes. Kentucky Shakespeare is just the thing for a Midsummer's Night! 

IF YOU GO

Kentucky Shakespeare will have performances almost every night this month, starting at 8 PM. For more information, please visit kyshakespeare.com. TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019 19

Mister For Ms BY ROCKO JEROME PHOTO BY STEPHANIE CHANEY

F

or those of us that have it, our health is easy to take for granted. Waking up feeling rested, getting out of bed without pain or numbness, going about our daily business without fatigue. No pain, no muscle spasms, no dizziness. For those who have multiple sclerosis, however, a day without these symptoms is all too often too much for which they can expect to hope.

Millions across the planet are struck by the disease, many of those to the point that their lives are completely debilitated. No cure exists, and although there are treatments that are met with varying degrees of success per individual, the diagnosis is grim. This can all change. The National MS Society raises millions per year to fund scientific research towards a cure, something closer and closer to grasp. They also help those living with MS to do so with greater dignity and comfort through a multitude of resources and support, medical and otherwise. It’s all done via donations from people just like you. Misters for MS is a fantastic fundraiser for the cause. The annual event is now entering its third year and is the brainchild of MS Society board member Jessica Tretter. It’s a twist on the old idea of the bachelor auction, in which local gentlemen campaigned during the Spring via social media and whatever means they might have available to them, up to and including real life interaction, all towards raising funds for the cause. The top ten earners were Ryan Patton, Matt Gentry, David Garvey, Seth Steenken, Jason Schmidt,

20 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019

Check out MistersForMS.org for more information Trevor Clines, Caleb Trigo, Ollie Jones, David Dafoe, and yours truly. As such, the ten of us will be your hosts at the upcoming titular Misters for MS event, held on the 20th of this month at the downtown Marriott. We’ll have a jovial atmosphere with a lot of fun to be had, items for attendees to bid on, and a segment in which each of us will have the opportunity to walk a runway to a piece of music of our choice in an appeal for donations. Ollie Jones Sr. is ready to do the thing. “I got into this event to make a difference. I’m glad I have the opportunity to walk with these selected gentlemen,” he says. “I didn’t know a lot about MS, but I have friends and people I’ve encountered that are affected. I’m just happy that I can be of service for this prestigious event.” Caleb Trigo is also amped, saying “I’m slaying the catwalk at Misters to support family and friends that have been affected by MS - cheers to all of the strong individuals that continue the fight. “For David Dafoe, this event is a personal one. “I have not walked a runway yet, but as a person living with MS I am overwhelmingly grateful just to walk,” he says. David Garvey is this year’s only returning Mister. “I participated in this event before and was honored to be invited back,” he says,

“I met some great people the first time and had a blast, so I’m excited to see what this year brings.” Some Misters have a bit of trepidation about doing their thing on the runway. “I was happy to raise money for such a great cause,” says Ryan Patton. “Now I’m a little nervous about being on stage but am excited to embarrass myself in all good fun!” For myself, I’ve never been too much of a shrinking violet when it’s time to show off. I’ll keep the plan for my walk a secret for now, but I’ll drop a clue: my music will be the tune that a certain Nature Boy and Memphis Flash have in common, as well as the soundtrack to a famous film named for a year that was, at that point, a far off future date. All frivolity aside, it’s been a massive and humbling honor to see my friends, colleagues, associates, and even a few folks that I don’t happen to have met yet make so many donations on my behalf. I want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who found it in their hearts and finances to give whatever they could afford. I like to believe that people are fundamentally good and that together, we can make big things happen. Let’s see if we can’t wipe out MS in our lifetime.

ou’ve found the one, set the date and before you know it, your wedding is a couple of short months away! What about your dress?! Don’t worry ladies; there’s a new gown shop in town. Fabulous Frocks, a “ready-to-wed” bridal boutique has come to Louisville and is located in Westport Village. Fabulous Frocks Bridal Boutique brings a fresh, new and innovative concept to the Bridal Industry in Louisville. This boutique offers brides an extensive collection of “ready-to-wed” and made-to-order gowns in a one-on-one setting. Franchise Owner, Amy Grooms, fell in love with the idea of being able to purchase a designer gown, straight off the rack with a short time frame, two months to be exact. Fabulous Frocks now has five locations in different cities- Kansas City, Louisville, Nashville, and Shreveport. Fabulous Frocks Bridal Louisville Owner, Kirsten Rice, shares that they were searching high and low when looking for the perfect location in Louisville. They wanted something big, fabulous, but intimate. “We were looking at a couple of different locations, and this one just fell into our lap” Kirsten shares “We were informed that Tunie’s was moving and it was the perfect big, but an intimate location for us.” The Westport Village location allows them to be more than a bridal boutique. Brides can make it a fun and memorable girl’s day with local shopping, brunch, and a trip to the salon all within walking distance.

Fabulous Frocks is a beautiful addition to the experience and atmosphere of Westport Village. Their collection contains a wide selection of designers such as Pronovias, Hayley Paige, Watters, and Maggie Sottero and will leave you feeling glamorous on your wedding day. he chapel resembles a Viking ship, only upside down and with beautiful stained glass windows, huge arches on both sides, and a beautiful organ around the balcony area.” Megan’s a dentist with an exacting personality as well as a self-acknowledged “type-A drive,” so she wanted to plan out the entire day with each minute executed as carefully as possible.

However, as we all know, nothing goes exactly as we plan, and there were speed bumps throughout the day. Finally, she let go of so she could celebrate with her husband and their families. They held their reception on the Captain’s Quarters Princess yacht. With a trio band to lead the festivities, the couple enjoyed their evening and made memories in Louisville that they will forever cherish. They are now moving to Oregon, where they will embark on all new adventures. 

ohemian greenery decor has made an explosion into the decor and design scene in our homes, stores, and business dwellings. It’s a refreshing component to the overall ambiance of your living space that directly impacts your mind in passive ways. There have been studies that prove plants improve the air quality of your atmosphere, indoors and out. The real test to this is a visual one that you can play on your own. Can you name the last time you went into a home or office where plants didn’t catch your eye or bring you an overall sense of peace? It’s few and far between that people look at plants with disgust. When you notice plant life and really take time to appreciate the grooves of the plant, the textures, the color, the scent, anything and everything sensory can impact you so much. It’s just that struggle of taking the time to notice the little things; i.e., “stopping and smelling the roses” or in this case, stop what you’re doing and appreciated the greenery in your space and recognizing the inner peace you have when you’re near it.

What if you’re so busy living your life that you barely have any time to bring another species into your domain and not feel bad for killing it? I strongly suggest succulents because they’re drought-resistant plants that require minimal maintenance and watering. Sansevieria plants have so many benefits, the coolest one being that it adds Oxygen into your home. You can style a Sansevieria anywhere in your home because they don’t require tons of sunlight and come in various sizes. Have an empty hall that needs some life? Sansevieria can grow up to 4 ft tall, giving you a luscious and modern plant look! 

hoosing colors for your home can be overwhelming. However, if you take into consideration the effect specific colors can have on your mood, it might make your decision process more comfortable. Think of the color wheel and the emotions each color elicits. The color gray is said to be neutral, it is unemotional and evokes the feeling of practicality and quiet, and it is also associated with timelessness. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that gray is such a popular color in many aspects of the home. From wall color to tile, countertops, and furnishings, gray can easily work itself into your home in many mediums. The living room pictured has dark grey walls, showing its formality and its timelessness, all the while remaining neutral and letting the beautiful woodwork and pops of pink shine. The brown tones of that wood speak to confidence and stability, while the pink shows some playfulness as well as a touch of femininity. The bathroom pictured is predominantly white, which often reads as peaceful, clean, and sterile. With black accents that command authority and green accents bringing in nature and balance, this bathroom becomes a cohesive space. Choosing colors for within your home isn’t just about the paint colors and the hard materials, but also the furnishings, textiles, and accessories. Dwellings, located in St. Matthews, is a fantastic resource to help you with all of those aspects. From the ground up, they can help make your home take on the moods that you desire. 

Blue SUMMER HUES

Styling the surfaces in your home can be tricky. Recently, there has been a considerable movement towards seeking calm and serenity in our daily lives and how we can bring this into our homes. As a designer, I'm incredibly intentional about how the items surrounding you and I, make us feel. Before heading out to your favorite local shops, stop and focus on the top emotions you want in the space you are working on. Living plants tend to immediately reduce stress (the right ones can clean the air in your home), and color can instantly affect your mood. Deep Blue promotes efficiency, while light blue can encourage calmness. Know what your triggers are, and be mindful next time you enter a space. One of the most essential styling tools to affect your daily life is to keep objects near; you can instantly hold and feel a found memory from. I like to mix these objects with newly found pieces from local retailers in my own home. Combining found brain coral from a trip to the BVI's, inspiring books, plants in various textures and colors, and an updated piece on a classic blue and white motif all bring a sense of calm, and the right level of energy. Blue and white are two tones you can bring in to mix with other neutrals to create a serene space. Blue is known to help you sleep as it is a soothing tone. White is an adaptable color with versetal tones per preference on shade to calm your eyes and allow neutrality to surround you.

Beginnings in Butchertown BY BELLA PORTARO-KUEBER PHOTOS BY J.L. JORDAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Those who know the history of Louisville might not have guessed that the Butchertown area of the past would become a popular neighborhood, with coveted homes attracting young professionals. They are attracted by the allure of living closer to their downtown workplaces, easing the transit times in their lives.

F

ormerly on the verge of being a bit dilapidated, the revitalization of the homes and new businesses in the surrounding area have built an appealing package to consider while looking for a new place to call home. A certain local realtor had a spectacular vision on this matter and years ago began working with a developer in NuLu to rebuild this district, revitalizing the historic buildings and bringing in exciting new tenants. Meet Scott Howe of HOWE Real Estate. Scott’s wife, Mo McKnight Howe, is a local business owner herself- she’s the proprietor of Revelry Boutique Gallery in the NuLu neighborhood.

he kitchen is connected with the option to close the original pocket doors. These date back to 1846 when the house was built. The vertical design component is an element that carries through both rooms. “The original crown molding around the windows was covered with a drop ceiling from the previous owners in the 1980’s,” Mo says. “We had one of our friends, Mitchell Kersting, come over to help us figure out what was going on with the frame around the window and he got on a ladder and just punched his hand through the ceiling to reveal that there was another few feet above it so we ripped it out to showcase the beautiful architecture of our shotgun home. Then we moved onto the floors. There were four layers of flooring covering the original flooring. We went through layer after layer until we finally got to the original heart pine wood floors. It was beautiful. We finished them and filled in spaces that had holes but otherwise it’s exactly as they were when the house was built.”

s the couple settled into their home, they saved money to renovate their bathroom, as well as the floor in the hallway. The original bathroom wasn’t spacious enough to fit their needs. While renovating that space, they decided to place a new boho themed floor to lead from the kitchen to the bathroom. The result is fabulously modern. “We really love our home,” Mo says. “We want to do so much more with our upstairs space to give me an art studio. I walk to work, we walk around the neighborhood to spend time with friends, eating out, and appreciating this historical neighborhood. Our friends live around us. It’s as though we have our own little retreat in the city and it’s quite a dream.”

he renaissance of downtown New Albany brought forth a bevy of new eateries, boutiques, bars and businesses and while some have come and gone, The Exchange Pub + Grill remains a solid entry in a crowded field.

(Top left) Steak Frites with teres major, herbed balsamic butter, frites and red pepper aioli: $22. (Right) The Grocery created with cucumber-infused vodka, lemon, simple syrup and a blackberry puree: $8.

Owned by local restaurateur Ian Hall, the Exchange has expanded since it opened in 2012 to include a large pet friendly patio and an open upstairs dining area that’s perfect for company lunches or big groups at dinner. The Exchange was constructed in a building that sat empty for over a decade. Bringing it back to life using repurposed items was part of the environmentally friendly concept. Here, you’ll find local beers, large portions and creatively crafted cocktails all designed to set The Exchange apart from competitors on both sides of the river. The menu changes seasonally both in the kitchen and in the bar, where cleverly crafted cocktails make spirits just as important as the lunch and dinner offerings. The Exchange Pub + Kitchen is located at 118 W. Main in New Albany. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Dinner is served Monday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The bar is open until 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. bar Vetti takes chance on vintage location, pairs Kentucky delicacies with Italian classics. BY MANDY WOLF DETWILER PHOTOS BY JOSH KEOWN

66 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019

ouisville might not be known for it’s pizza scene yet, but bar Vetti operator Ryan Rogers saw a chance and took it when the owners of the landmark Fourth Street 800 building approached him to open a restaurant. Rogers, the braintrust behind the Feast BBQ and Royals Hot Chicken concepts, opened bar Vetti 18 months ago and quickly realized the Italian Kentuckians think they know wasn’t what he had planned to give them. Instead, he worked with chef/ partner Andrew McCabe to pair Kentucky staples with the concepts behind traditional trattorias in Italy. “They really speak to that region that they’re from, so we try a similar idea and say ‘if we’re representing our region, our region is Kentucky’,” Rogers says.

We want to stay true to food in the Italian sense, but pick products from the region we’re in That means you’re likely to find more traditional pizzas –– such as a classic Margherita –– but also dishes with collard greens, homemade ricotta, beets and county ham. As more Americans become food savvy, chefs like McCabe are afforded the opportunity to create entrees beyond the $9.99 pepperoni –– and they’re learning to appreciate that culinary expertise. “We want to stay true to food in the Italian sense, but pick products from the region we’re in,” McCabe says. “That way we are an Italian restaurant, but there’s a sense of place as well. We can replicate things from Italy, but stay true at the same time.” McCabe plans to change the menu seasonally. bar Vetti is located at 800 S. 4th Street. The restaurant is open at 5 p.m., and reservations are accepted at (502) 883-3331 or via the company’s Web site at barvetti.com. A full bar menu with signature cocktails and homemade amari (Italian apertifs) is also available. 

ou might not think of a hot chicken restaurant to have one of the best cold treats in the city, but in fact, Royals Hot Chicken knows how to fire you up and cool you off. Located in the heart of NuLu on East Market St, this fast casual, relaxed hot chicken spot serves up some of the hottest chicken and the best milkshakes. The dessert menu is simple and as relaxed as the atmosphere. Royals Shakes are available in Vanilla or Chocolate. The shakes are made with real, quality ingredients and packed with flavor. For only a dollar, you can blend in a fried apple hand pie. But the perfect companion to the milkshake is the fried hot chicken served on a potato bun with mayo, iceberg lettuce, and pickles with a heat level of X-Hot. The chicken at Royals is brined for a day to ensure the correct flavor and spice level. The Royals heat level scale goes from classic fried to Gonzo hot. Warning! Only try Gonzo level hot chicken if you are prepared to cry a little and have more than one milkshake. Royals have special milkshake flavors of the month, in addition to the standard vanilla and chocolate. Past monthly flavors have included Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake, a Red Velvet Milkshake and a Pumpkin Pie Milkshake. July’s monthly flavor is Orange Dreamsicle. Check out Royals Instagram account, @royalshotchicken for monthly specials and specialty milkshake availability.

he Legendary Waffle Sundaes at Liege & Dairy is what gets you through the door, but it’s the unique twist on small-batch ice cream and vast toppings that keeps you coming back for more. Considered the new kids on the block when it comes to cool treats, Liege & Dairy opened their first location in Holiday Manor Center in April 2018. They have since opened a second location in Middletown and added a food truck. The owner of the business, Andrew Llewellyn, traveled to Belgium where he first had a Liege waffle. He liked it so much that it inspired him to open Liege & Dairy Ice Cream +Waffles. Andrew wanted to capture the taste from Belgium while incorporating local Kentucky flavors. Liege & Dairy uses many products such as coffee, honey, molasses, and fruits from local markets and Kentucky farms. Andrew touts the ice cream is non-GMO made from hormone-free cows. “What’s better than waffles and ice cream?

They’re the two best food groups, period,” says Andrew. ” We take the waffle you have been missing for your whole life, the Liege Waffle, along with some of the most amazing creamy ice creams, then combine them into our Legendary Waffle Sundaes. We make our ice creams, waffles, and most of our toppings from scratch in Louisville daily.” The Legendary Waffle Sundaes includes a Liege waffle, 1 scoop of ice cream, and 3 toppings. You can build your own or pick from a list of signature flavors. A favorite signature waffle sundae is Kenny’s Cookie Jar Waffle Sundae with a Liege waffle, cookies & cream ice cream, Oreo cookie butter, cookie pieces, and warm Nutella drizzle. Liege & Dairy has other menu items, too. Every Tuesday -and only on Tuesdays- you can order a taco shaped cone and fill it with your favorite ice cream and toppings. It’s the perfect cool treat to celebrate #TacoTuesday.

If anyone has the right to be called a survivor, it’s Whitney Austin. She’s a strong woman who went through a terrifying ordeal, and now she uses her experience with others. THE DAY: T

he shooting happened around the same time that we purchased a new home. It was a Thursday morning and I drove up for a day in the office rather than staying the night. I remember leaving the house and kissing my kids goodbye. They wanted a second hug and kiss that day, and I did even though my brain was telling me that I needed to get out of the door. I'm thankful I took the time to do so that day. I like to optimize my time during the drives, so I spent my drive time listening to a podcast about banking and then joined a conference call with a few peers. As I drove into Fountain Square parking garage, I knew that I would lose the signal on my call, so I reminded everyone that I would probably lose connectivity, and I did. I walked up the stairwell into the lobby of the Westin Hotel, then exited through the revolving door to go out onto the street. That’s when I dialed back in for the conference call, and crossed 5th Street on the walkway with my attention split between the call and watching out for cars, as they typically don't slow down in that area.

I

Now, this is where my memory gets

BAD.

have no recollection of whether there were people around me or not; it was probably a ghost town, but my mind was focused on the conference call so I didn't observe my surroundings as others may have. I was walking towards the entrance of the building and at the revolving door, I noticed the glass within the door was shattered but still fully entact. It didn't actually alarm me. Weeks prior my husband's car window was broken with a rock and at that moment I thought this glass is broken because someone threw a rock. Not concerned with the shattered glass, I pushed the revolving door with the right side of my body and that is when everything happened. Multiple bullets hit me, and I collapsed because of the force of the impact.

I NEVER SAW MY SHOOTER OR ANY OF THE VICTIMS. I WAS FOCUSED ON FOUNTAIN SQUARE, TRYING TO FIND S OMEONE TO SAVE ME. As I collapsed outward, I looked toward Fountain Square. That's all that I remember visually, I was protected in a way because I didn't see what was happening in the building. I never saw my shooter or any of the victims. I was focused on Fountain Square, trying to find someone to save me. I knew it was a mass shooting, there was no other rational explanation. I pay enough attention to the news and have been fearful of it happening to my family , so I knew I was in one. Without a doubt. I had to think about what to do. How could I get out? I was coughing up blood and I was in shock. Adrenaline was pumping through me. There wasn’t a lot of pain as I was focused on what was happening around me. At first, it didn't feel like I would survive. I’d

82 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019

seen enough violent movies to know that coughing up that much blood isn't a good thing. However, a few seconds passed and I wasn't dead, so I knew I had to focus and get out of this situation. My first thought was to get out by standing up and escaping, but I tried, and I wasn't strong enough. My second thought was to call someone, call anyone to save me. I realized I still had the conference line running as I could hear my peers but I had placed the call on mute earlier. I remember hearing them say, "Whitney, are you there?" repeatedly, but I couldn’t unmute it because once I moved, it happened again. He came back and shot me. That's when I started to feel hopeless.

I decided to play I assumed he shot me again because I moved, so I needed to convince him to leave me alone. Without anyone on Fountain Square to save me, I didn’t see any way out of the situation. But luckily for me, Officer Alphonso (Al) Staples and the Cincinnati Police Department arrived on the scene. As soon as my eyes made contact with Al, I shouted as loud as I could: You need to get over here and save me. You've got to save me. I have a five-year-old and seven-year-old, and they need their mother. Al screamed back at me about a five and seven-year-old being inside and I clarified that they were home and they were fine, but they need their mother, so he had to save me

I

n total, the time I spent within the revolving door was approximately two minutes, but it felt much longer to me. As soon as they took down the shooter, Al saved me. In my memory, I thought he carried me out, but when I watched the video, I realized that he and another female officer helped me walk out. He walked me over to the flagpole bench on Fountain Square. I remember the pain was starting to set in, but I needed to stay focused on my goal of getting home to my family.

After being rescued, first responders took all measures possible to make me comfortable while trying to save my life. The ambulance arrived shortly and thanks to the amazing staff at UC Medical Center, I was stabilized and moved into the NICU. I remember calling my kids that night from the hospital. I was so grateful that my family had gone to such great lengths to keep my children away from the news. My kids were blissfully unaware of the dramatic events of the day and the rollercoaster of emotions that others weren’t as lucky to avoid. By the time they talked to us that evening, they knew something was up because they were at grandma and grandpa's house and mommy and daddy weren't there with them. However, we spoke with them over Facetime, my husband explained to them

DEAD.

to get me home to them. I remember laying there and wondering why he hadn't saved me yet. But that's not how things work. Law enforcement must first eliminate the threat before they can rescue victims. As I waited for Al to save me, I regained my will to survive. I also grew frustrated. I was frustrated that I was caught up in a mass shooting but even more important, I was frustrated that I had done nothing to prevent it. I had taken steps prior to the shooting to volunteer with a local grassroots organization focused on preventing gun violence. I’d received invites yet ignored them. In that moment, I felt guilty that I hadn’t done more.

They asked us a few questions, then asked if they could go back to watching their television show. They weren’t concerned. I didn’t have surgery until the next day. I needed a repair surgery for multiple bones in my right arm. It was hit first as I pushed through the revolving door and my humerus, radial head, and ulna were shattered. Prior to surgery, my right arm wasn’t even recognizable. I was able to go home within five days of the shooting. The thing that I remember most about coming home the first week was how pitiful and dependent I was. On day two, Waller, my husband, and a family friend helped me lean over the bathtub and washed my hair three times just to remove all the blood.

I have learned how amazing the human body is. In the beginning I couldn’t use the restroom on my own, I couldn’t feed myself, I couldn’t put my hair in a ponytail. On top of that, I wasn’t allowed to bathe or shower for weeks because of the incision from my surgery. My amazing hairstylist would do my hair for me so that I could look presentable. To get by that first month my cousin moved in with us and played the role of mommy, caretaker, and business partner. Every day and every week I just got stronger and stronger. I can remember being in my backyard and walking up just four steps, and that made me feel winded. I knew I was so fragile at that time. However, through breathing exercises and therapy, I have been able to rebuild my strength and endurance. I go to physical and occupational therapy multiple times a week

WHITNEY/STRONG’S

A Night For Life and I’ve progressed so much in just nine short months. While there is still much to be done, I can now pick up my kids. I went swimming for the first time this summer realized I can’t do the breaststroke like I used to. Freestyle is hard too.Every time I try to move my right arm up for the rotation it just catches and it’s very uncomfortable. Throwing a football well is also out of the question right now, but I’m very proud of the progress I’ve made after being shot twelve times. Picking up your kids is one of the best feelings, and I get to do that. This is a miracle.

SEPTEMBER 6, 7:00-11:00PM The Muhammad Ali Center

I’m very lucky with my injuries because they could have been much worse. No major arteries were hit by the bullets and I didn’t see the shooting. Without visual images to haunt me I feel quite strong mentally. However, one of the most difficult days for me was the day of my second surgery on my right arm in October 2019. On that day the shooting at the Stony Brook Kroger occurred. That shooting became a huge trigger for me. Cincinnati isn’t my hometown, so it was very easy to dismiss what happened to me and the fear of it happening again. But then it happened here. I know that Kroger. I had worked in the bank within it years ago. My customers and family use that Kroger. I started to ruminate over it for two straight days. I read about the victims, the perpetrator, and all the details. I learned quickly that I couldn’t do that. It doesn’t matter if it’s the shooting at Stony Brook, Tree of Life in Pittsburgh, or any other shooting, big or small. I become extremely distraught about the loss of life and I cannot pour over the details because it sends me into a tailspin that I think many people can only imagine. After three days of ruminating about the Stony Brook shooting, I knew that it wasn’t helping and I needed to stop. What I can do is do the work of my non-profit, Whitney/Strong. I pushed myself out of my head and put myself into action. While I see a therapist regularly and she has provided me with tools to get through these moments, what helps the most is channeling my energy into Whitney/Strong. I feel pulled toward preventing gun violence and couldn’t turn my back on this issue if I tried. 

The Whitney/Strong organization is focused on reducing gun violence through majority-supported and evidence-based solutions. Whitney/Strong has three main solutions to execute on for 2019/2020: preventing firearm suicides, enforcing existing laws aimed at preventing prohibited persons from purchasing firearms, and getting extreme risk protection orders for Kentucky and Ohio. To learn more join us on September 6th at the Muhammad Ali Center for Whitney/Strong’s A Night for Life. Along with her carefully selected staff of nurses (whom she refers to warmly as physician extender “partners”), Dr. Samuels offers a personalized, boutique style of service that one would be more apt to expect from a family doctor when it comes to the “handson” personal approach to the care of her patients...yet the practice offers a menu of services you’d expect to find in a much bigger metropolitan plastic surgery practice. Dr. Samuels goes out of her way to form strong bonds of familiarity with her patients, who often continue to utilize her services throughout the phases of their lives. “It’s very humbling to see how lives can be changed through these procedures and to become familiar with the personalities of the people who come to me, and then return to the practice, over and over,” Dr. Samuel says. “It gets to the point where I can almost finish their sentences. I know their families.” Dr. Samuels specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery procedures of the face, breast, and body, but her initial field of study related to trauma and general surgery. After studying at UK, Dr. Samuels went on to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, long recognized as the most well rounded and respected program in the United States. There, she completed a rigorous five year General Surgery residency. She then completed a two year fellowship there in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Not one to rest on her laurels, Dr. Samuels has spent much time partnering with industry to perform important cosmetic clinical research on cosmetic devices in plastic surgery, is the author of many manuscripts and book chapters, and is a sought-after speaker on the national and international level. A woman with a deeply compassionate spirit, Dr. Samuels identifies with her patients and has one goal in mind. “The words that I always love to hear are, “You changed my life,’” she says. “Knowing that I can improve someone’s perception of themselves and make that kind of an impact, that’s so very important to me.”

However, I must say the most rewarding thing for me is at the end of a visit when a previously anxious patient tells me ‘Well, this has actually been a pleasant experience.’ Many patients that walk through our doors have a fear or nervousness about seeing a dentist. Reassuring patients, calming their fears and taking the time to earn their trust is something we focus on at Floss 32. Modern advances in dentistry has really changed the way we practice. No longer is there a need to feel pain or discomfort in a dental chair.” The staff at Floss 32 take the time to get to know our patients. “I not only know the dental aspects, like if they prefer mint toothpaste, but I also make it a point to know their personal lives as well,” shares Dr. Brittany. “I know their kid’s names, the sports they play, the vacations they took, their favorite TV shows. It’s not uncommon to see Floss 32 at one of your child’s sporting events, sponsoring the game and cheering on the local teams. all for faster recovery. The use of this treatment has been commonplace for horses for many years, but studies and anecdotal evidence have proven that it’s equally beneficial for us, as well.

Magna Wave 502-742-7868 • 106 WATTERSON TRAIL MAGNAWAVEPEMF.COM Magna Wave President Alane Paulley has seen the immediate benefits of her company’s services up close and personally. “My first hand experience comes from my husband, who was able to completely avoid medication and surgery for his severe back pain using our PEMF machine, with absolutely zero side effects,” she says. Her father, Pat Ziemer, started the business 18 yrs ago. She took over in 2012. PEMF stands for Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field, and this form of therapy is FDA approved to treat aches and pains by reducing inflammation, restoring joints and muscles, improving blood circulation, increasing blood oxygen content, and strengthening the immune system,

100 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019

Alane believes in the service that her company offers so much, the initial treatment is free. Results can be instantaneous. “I understand that some might find the idea of this to be a bit unorthodox, but the benefits of it are fantastic and it’s very easy,” she says. When one schedules an appointment with Magna Wave, they will come in for a 15-minute consultation, in which they will go over what they hope to achieve by trying the treatment. Then, they will have the bands of the PEMF machine wrapped around their fully clothed bodies -it’s described as looking a bit like a garden hose- and drink a cup of water as their cells are rejuvenated all the way down to the bone marrow by magnetic fields in a simple and painless 30-minute session. “We think that it’s perfect for everyone,” says Alane, “we see it improve our patients’ health every day.”

CaloAesthetics 502-899-9979 • 2341 LIME KILN LANE CALOAESTHETICS.COM Formed by Dr. M. Bradley Calobrace, Caloaesthetics Plastic Surgery Center sits at the vanguard of plastic surgery in the Louisville and Lexington area. “Our emphasis is the highest level of patient safety, providing our patients with the information to make the right choices for their situation, surrounding our patients with an experienced, well-trained staff and offering advanced surgical skill,” says Dr. Calobrace. “Enthusiastic patients tell their friends about us, and physicians around the country refer patients to us, especially in complex situations.” In 2016, the board-certified Dr. Chet Mays joined the Calobrace team, bringing his tremendous experience, natural skill, aptitude, and a remarkable sense of empathetic sensitivity with him. He has an emotional intelligence about him that just can’t be taught. “When someone comes to see us for a consultation, they’re really opening up about something that they aren’t comfortable with about themselves and putting themselves in a vulnerable position,” Dr. Mays says. “This is a decision that I don’t take lightly, and it’s of the utmost importance that everyone feels more than comfortable here.” Dr. Mays comes from a family with particularly skilled hands. His father and three older brothers are also surgeons. In a genuine sense, he is, as well. He considers himself not only a surgeon but an artist. “What we do at Caloaesthetics is essentially sculpting, molding, and shaping, only instead of clay, it’s the human body. What we do is 100% committed to the cosmetic and aesthetic, so in a way, this is our art studio.” CaloAesthetics is a place that reflects the desires of our own self-image, where those problem areas that the gym just doesn’t seem to fix or the signs of aging can be modified or reshaped into something more to our liking. Dr. Mays puts it succinctly; “We’re here to help you love the body you’re in.”

Core Chiropractic 502-896-5669 • 100 ENVOY CIRCLE • MYCORECHIRO.COM Dr. James Harding came to practice the healing and restorative power of chiropractic medicine a little later in life than you might expect. He initially found a great deal of success in business management but moved on from that when he realized that it just wasn’t his passion. “My profit margins were doing great, but I just felt unfulfilled and wanted to do something that felt more purposeful,” he says. “I went back to school when I was 31. Initially I was pursuing dentistry. I can’t say that I always understood what chiropractic was at that time, but once I began to learn about it and all the ways it does improve lives, I was all in!” After a few years hitting the books and working his way through

school, he worked for another doctor for two years, then opened Core Chiropractic in 2014 when he was 38 years old. It has since become a preeminent spot for those seeking to end pain, maintain health, or reach their optimal state. “We treat each of our patients completely as individuals, with specialized, custom care for everyone,” the doctor says. “It’s not just lower back pain; we are here to educate and treat all facets.” Along that line, CORE offers a wide variety of services, including massage therapy, a gym that provides personal training and rehab, and physical therapy, all from a team of dedicated and highly skilled professionals. Throughout Dr. Harding’s journey, he and his supportive wife Jennifer, whom he dated in high school and married in 1995, built a family consisting of seven children. Jennifer serves as the Director of Operations for CORE Chiropractic. “My background and love for natural healing and self-improvement have made for a perfect combination as we go forward and serve others here at Core Chiro,” she says. “We have truly been blessed!”

Westport Village Gets Its Wings International street artist Kelsey Montague brings #WhatLiftsYou movement to Louisville COURTESY PHOTOS

estport Village has commissioned international street artist, Kelsey Montague, to create her first large-scale interactive mural in Louisville. The wings will be uniquely designed for Louisville, incorporating red roses and race horses, and is expected to be complete on July 10. “We are excited that Westport Village will be home to Kelsey’s first mural in Louisville,” says Kelly Brown, General Manager of Westport Village. “We invite everyone to come down, snap a photo, post online and share what is most important their lives.” Montague started her #WhatLiftsYou movement in Manhattan with large-scale murals of her iconic wings. Celebrities including Taylor Swift and Vanessa Hudgens posed with the street art wings while media outlets like Mashable, MTV, Forbes and Refinery 29have featured her work, making the

artwork an overnight sensation. “I believe that art should not be separated from the human experience,” says Montague. “Instead the human experience should have a hand in creating the art itself.” Westport Village will celebrate its new wings by hosting a Swing N’ Wing Ding event on July 11 from 6:00-800pm. The free event will feature local swing/jazz band, Billy Goat Strut Revue, and Lindy Hop Louisville swing dancers. The Swing N’ Wing Ding is part of the center’s free Summer in the Village concert series. Each month features a different outdoor event, including Radiotronic on June 6th, The Newbees on July 18th, a Village-Wide Tent Sale on July 27th and a School Supply Drive with School of Rock performance on August 8th. Kelsey Montague is a renowned street

artist who has painted large-scale, interactive Street murals in six countries on three continents. Her work has recently been acknowledged by Taylor Swift and has been highlighted by The New York Times, MTV, Buzzfeed, Forbes, Entertainment Weekly and The Wall Street Journal. Kelsey Montague’s wings were an overnight sensation, reaching over 10,000 organic viewers online through social media. 

SNAPPING SHOTS FOR TOPS

candice gentry, dnp, MPH, RN, CIC She's a nurse, a single mom, and when she's not too busy, a freelance TOPS Louisville photographer. Candice Gentry found the time for a quick lunch with Rocko Jerome. Here, he brings you her story.

Here are a few of her avorite covered events

PHOTO (LEFT) BY JAMIE RHODES

P

erhaps you have seen her at any number of events around town, shooting photos for this very magazine. She might have even taken your picture, carefully getting the lighting and setting just right, then getting your name down afterward. What you might not know about Candice Gentry is that her full time job is a big one: she's not just a nurse but has received a doctorate, and is the Director of Care Coordination at Norton Hospital. "Knowing that what I do every day leads to positive outcomes for patients, that's major for me," she says. "I like to see that I help make a difference." Growing up in the small town of Winchester kept Candice grounded, but thinking big. "A place like that is perfect for raising kids because it's such a tight community, but transversely, you can't wait to grow up and get out into the world," Candice recalls. She graduated from the one high school in town, then went on to U of L for a sports medicine degree, followed by UK for a masters degree in public health. She very narrowly got into Spalding's night school program to study nursing, and then while working in that field, she earned her Doctorate of nursing practice last year. "All along, I was lucky enough that things fell into place," Candice humbly observes. Candice has two kids. 13 year old Terral is a burgeoning archery ace, he enjoys family time and accompanying his mom on jogging

I first met Candice early in 2017, just as TOPS Louisville was getting going. She told me that she was interested in becoming a photographer, so I gave her my card and told her to call me if she ever decided to really pursue it. This is no slight against her, but knowing people and how we all tend to be about starting new things, I didn't expect to hear back. It wasn't a week later when she called me and said: "So I bought this really nice camera, and I've been reading up on everything related to photography..." I've never doubted her since.

excursions. 6 year old Gentry carries Candice's maiden name in honor of an uncle she never had the pleasure of meeting. "He died when I was just 15, and I have no other brothers to carry the family name," Candice explains. Gentry is into gymnastics and just had her kindergarten graduation. For Candice, her entire worldview- as a parent, as a professional, as a person- is part of a family tradition. "I have, or I suppose I should say I had, a loving set of parents. They were married for 42 years, and they taught me to respect everyone," she says. "They both passed away way too early in life, but I don't hold any bitterness in my heart. I just carry the memories of the love that they shared, and I am thankful that I can pass that love and respect on to my children and other people in my life." 

Derby Eve Events “One of the best nights in photography. Everyone is happy, looking fabulous, and ready to strike a pose for you! I meet so many people, it’s incredible.” Bowman Field Aviation and Military Heritage Festival "I ended up going up in a helicopter -something that I had no idea I would be doing that day- and actually shooting photos. It was like being a human drone." KFC Premium Club Business Professional Networking Events “These events are so awesome. They feature live talent, great food, and the opportunity to meet professionals in the community. Not to mention, I always get to snap photos and converse with upcoming star JD Shelburne!”

Hot Days,

Cool Escapes

In the summer, having fun boils down to one thing‌ how to stay cool in the heat and enjoy the season. With school out and vacations calling, we're sharing our guide for how to stay cool all summer long, complete with family-friendly fun and over 21 options. Whether you prefer to stay in, go out on the town, or escape from the city, we have ideas that will help you make the most of your summer. BY MARCELLA KRAGEL AND INA MILLER PHOTOS BY ALLISON MYERS

Ina Marcella Events is a full service event planning and creative consulting business co-owned by Ina Miller and Marcella Kragel. With shared backgrounds in the arts and non-profit management, and a mutual passion for community engagement, Ina and Marcella have developed a unique approach to event planning aimed at creating inspired one-of-akind events for their clients. Ina and Marcella have been friends for twenty years and each is married with three kids.

Fresh Ways to Entertain at Home Nothing says summer quite like a cookout, but we have some twists that will help keep the temperature down, without turning down the fun. Family Friendly: When entertaining with kids, we suggest a cold sweet treat to cap any gathering. For the best in town, check out Steel City Pops (1021 Bardstown Road and 117 St. Matthews Avenue) who sells conveniently packaged popsicles to go, wrapped to ensure they stay cold until it's time to share. Help the kids work up an appetite with a

120 TOPS LOUISVILLE | July 2019

water feature for entertainment. A Slip-nSlide, well-timed water balloon fight or even a sprinkler will delight children of all ages, and make sure they get a good night's sleep. Speaking of nighttime, keep the kids up a little later than usual, and do some stargazing once the hot sun has set. We suggest a book, map, or even the handy mobile app Night Sky to help you pick out constellations. 21+: When planning your summer parties, think beyond the grill and try a new gazpacho recipe. Cold soups are unbelievably refreshing on a hot day, and the creative possibilities are endless. Turn up the heat on your adult beverages with fruit filled ice cubes. Raspberries,

blueberries, and even herbs will brighten up mixed drinks and add a surprise ingredient as the cubes melt. Keep the cool factor turned up with a mellow summer playlist that will remind your guests to slow down and relax.

Cool Places Out on the Town It's easy to get lazy in the summer heat, so getting out of the house is an excellent way to keep the energy up. These are our favorite places to celebrate throughout the city. Family Friendly: It's noticeably cooler when you are in our city's green spaces, so make sure to check out Louisville's amazing park systems and pay special attention to the

ones with splash zones, some of our favorites are Cherokee, Iroquois, the Parklands at Floyds Fork, and Waterfront Park. After wearing them out, fill them up with ice cream from one of the many unique local establishments. We love the dairy-free options at Louisville Cream (632 East Market Street), or the nostalgia served up at Ehler's Ice Cream (201 East Main Street), who just opened their first brick and mortar location in nearly 15 years. Looking to stay out of the sun, no one says you can't go ice skating in the middle of July. Check out Alpine Ice Arena (1825 Gardiner Lane) or Iceland Sports Complex (1701 Ups Drive) for a twist on summer fun, but bring an extra sweater. 21+: No kids, or have a sitter? We suggest chillin' on the most happening patio in town at Garage Bar (700 East Market Street). Get there early if you want to grab a ping pong table, but the beer and cocktail selection is extensive, not to mention the delicious homemade non-alcoholic sodas. If it's still too hot, get a little higher at 8up Elevated Drinkery & Kitchen. The views and breeze are unbeatable. If you're looking to get out during the day, we think a great family-friendly location to go to the Parklands of Floyds Fork is also a romantic spot to share a kayak for two on Beckley Creek.

Cool Escapes When the road is calling, you don't have to go far to get a great summer get-a-way. We often make summer bucket lists with our families and weekend trips are easy, inexpensive, and energizing when you can't get away for a full vacation. Family Friendly: When the kids are driving you crazy, turn to one of the many area water parks. Hurricane Bay is local, but Holiday World (Santa Claus, IN) and Kings Island (Mason, OH) are just a short drive away. If you're feeling outdoorsy, you can take on a natural adventure by heading south and underground to explore Mammoth Cave National Park (Cave City, KY) where temperatures that stay around 54 degrees throughout the year, make it a weekend and rent a cabin or camp at one of the nearby lake resorts! Nothing says "Kentucky summer" quite like a pontoon boat; you can even rent one with a slide and skip the water park lines. 21+: romantic get-a-ways in the summer are usually of the beach variety, but we have some nearby suggestions that will make you feel miles away from Louisville. For a sophisticated weekend retreat head to French Lick, Indiana and check into West Baden Springs Hotel or French Lick Resort and enjoy world-class cuisine, indulgent spas, and old-world charm. If that isn't your scene, nothing says summer quite like honkytonk hopping in downtown Nashville during a hot summer night. For the more outdoorsy types, take a day and relax in the Awesome Lazy River of Shepherdsville (165 Dawson Drive). You can even rent a float for your cooler! 

After all the fun is over, we hope you give back to our city and help everyone cool off by planting a tree. Louisville is one of the country's fastest growing heat islands. Several city organizations will help you help improve our city's tree canopy. Check out Trees Louisville (treeslouisville.org), Louisville Grows (louisvillegrows.org) or Louisville Nature Center (louisvillenaturecenter.org) for more information. Your act will pay it forward for generations to come.

The woman leading Children’s Hospital Foundation and Norton Healthcare Foundation: LYNNIE MEYER Lynnie Meyer, Ed.D., R.N., CFRE, serves as Senior VP and Chief Development Officer at Norton Healthcare, a position she has held since 2004. In that role, Meyer leads the operations of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Norton Healthcare Foundation. The foundations support the needs of Norton Children’s Hospital and the adult-service hospitals of Norton Healthcare. Under her leadership the foundations have generated more than $280.0 million and documented an additional $54 million in irrevocable estate gifts in support of Norton Healthcare’s mission. “Norton Children’s Hospital serves all 120 counties in Kentucky and 35 in Indiana. It’s an important and vital resource for the health of the community. In order for us to grow to serve everyone we depend upon support and that comes from all levels; from volunteering at an event to making a monetary donation, we appreciate the efforts that are made on our behalf every day as we do the same for so many children.” As part of their commitment to improving the health of our community, they provide funding for many services that benefit the public. This includes charity care and patient family financial assistance. Year over year, their total community benefit contribution is valued at more than $100 million. Norton’s dedicated employees also contribute to community benefit. Each year they donate tens of thousands of hours of community service, a benefit valued at more than $1 million. The hospitals makes it possible to provide access to a variety of networks or providers that are caregivers to the people in this region. They have 250 locations throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana, including five hospitals and 14 Norton Immediate Care Centers.
