Expect to Win: 10 Proven Strategies for Thriving in the Workplace
Carla A. Harris
Climbing the corporate ladder, Harris vowed that she would one day share her experience and advice with others. “Carla’s pearls” have become unmissable wisdom for those looking to further their careers and become better leaders – and coworkers.
For many leaders, the issue of wanting to further their knowledge isn’t the issue; it’s time. When you’re already busy running your business or leading a team, working one more item into your schedule can feel impossible, especially if you already struggle with your work-life balance. However, professional development is an important contribution to your team. Furthering your own skills as a leader means you’re improving the efficiency and communication in your workplace. It also means that your staff will ultimately feel more valued and find more meaning in their work. That’s worth investing in!
Identify a Need
If you identify a specific area that needs improvement, you will feel more compelled to work to find a solution. Defining a target means setting goalposts and markers for success, propelling your learning project forward.
Time Block
Set aside a specific chunk of time on your calendar and devote it entirely to leadership learning. Whether it’s two hours to read books or 30 minutes a day to listen to a leadership podcast, ensure you allow yourself the time and space to learn.
Remember that the time needn’t be sequential. If you only have 10-minute breaks available, utilize those to listen to podcast snippets while you stretch or take a short walk.
Go Online
In the 21st century, the digital tools available to you are virtually (pardon the pun) limitless. Embrace digital media. Podcasts, videos, ebooks, blogs, Zoom seminars, social media posts and more mean you can access the best advice from some of the greatest leaders to have ever lived in mere seconds. Harness that magic!
Don’t forget that digital experiences can lead to in-person networking. Connect with other leaders and meet up for coffee “dates.” Find local professional development and networking opportunities and get out there.

Build Your Brand
by Emma Reilly
Good branding isn’t just for the Targets and Amazons of the world. Whether you’re searching for a new job, trying to grow your client base or just hoping to make a good first impression, it is important to develop your personal brand. When someone looks up your name online, what do you want them to see? They’ll likely come across your social media profiles (including LinkedIn), any recent news articles or websites that mention you and any personal websites or portfolios. Personal branding is all about understanding the ways in which people find information about you and taking control of that narrative to maintain a consistent, intentional voice.
If you’re having trouble understanding how you’re perceived online, think about it this way: if you walked into the office in sweatpants and a dirty t-shirt but
entered a meeting to land a million-dollar deal for your company, what would people think? Some may see that choice as a power move, but most people would be confused and have trouble taking you seriously – there’s a mismatch between the image you are putting out into the world and how you are acting. If you want to be seen as professional, your online presence should reflect that while also helping you stand out. If you’re creative and want the world to know it, your personal brand should exhibit your unique style!
What do you want to be known for? In most cases, our online personas are people’s first impressions of us, which means our social media profiles and other online platforms should be used to put your best foot forward. Here’s how to ensure you’re telling the best story of who you are and what you do.
Get Your Profiles in Order
Make sure all of your online profiles are up-to-date and use consistent language. You want to sound like YOU, not a robot or you from 20 years ago. Think about the tone you are trying to convey. Do you want to seem approachable, fun-loving, sophisticated, or excited? You should also update your profile photos across all platforms to remain coherent. There may be several people who share your name, but your profiles should be undeniably you to those who know you and easy to differentiate for those who don’t.
Now is also the time to check for any content that you wouldn’t want a potential employer or client to see. If you want to separate your personal and professional brands, make your personal pages private (but still be sure to clean up your pages from anything you wouldn’t want a boss coming across – a social media post is not worth your job).
Create Your Visual Identity
This doesn’t have to be anything fancy! We’re not all graphic designers. Your profiles should look like you in the same way your posts should sound like you. This is something that some people forget to take into account, which means it can make your personal brand stand out that much more.
Some important principles to consider when creating your visual identity:
Readability: The most important thing is that your viewers can understand your message. This means the fonts and color pairings you choose are easy to read, all text is concise and to the point, there is a clear hierarchy/flow of information and there is not too much content to parse at once.
Consistency/Scalability: Can your visual identity be used across different platforms in all shapes and sizes? Picture the McDonald’s logo and brand – the yellow arches are simple enough to be understood, whether they’re used on a small profile picture or a large billboard. Plus, when you see red and yellow, you probably picture a box of warm golden fries. TL;DR: all visual elements of your brand should be simple enough to make sense from one platform to the next.
Logos: Not everyone needs a logo to represent their personal brand unless it will be used for business, but it can still be a fun addition to add a little extra flair! This design choice should never be random, though – every part of your brand should have a clear purpose. For example, if you are an outgoing consultant looking for new clients, you could incorporate small elements like a megaphone or a pair of interlocked hands to represent your goals of collaboration and sharing your expertise with others. You can utilize tools like Canva or Adobe Express to quickly create your logo from scratch, or talk to a designer about how you would like your logo to be used.
Colors: Much like your brand logo, choosing the colors that represent you may seem overwhelming and complicated, but fear not! There is a handy tool called color theory that explains why we think the way we think when we see certain colors. You should also think about complementary colors to build a color palette for your personal brand. View the diagram on the right for a detailed description.
RED: action, passion, urgency, dominance
ORANGE: optimism, enthusiasm, originality
YELLOW: joy, warmth, positivity, happiness
GREEN: nature, loyalty, safety, health
BLUE: trust, confidence, success, security
PURPLE: imagination, mystery, royalty, justice
PINK: softness, creativity, gratitude, intuition
BLACK: elegance, sophistication, wealth
WHITE: purity, hope, simplicity, cleanliness
Craft Your Elevator Pitch
If you met your idol in an elevator and they asked you about yourself, what would you say? Keep in mind that you only have about 30 seconds to make your mark before the doors open and they leave you behind. You want to be memorable without becoming overwhelming. The formula for the best elevator pitch is not as stressful as it seems with a little preparation:
Introduction: Include your name, job title and/or company name.
Experience: Provide some background and context, like important projects you’ve worked on or your focus.
Goals: State your goal or pain points you hope to address.
Solution: Share your unique perspective or idea to achieve your goal.
Plan: Lay out specific reasons you stand out and will be successful in your goals; end with a call to action.
Plan Some Posts
There’s no reason to have online profiles if you don’t utilize them! Before you just go posting on social media willy-nilly, start a list of some content ideas, some of which can be recurring themes. It’s important to keep a few evergreen content ideas, or posts that would be relevant and useful to post at any given time, on hand.
Here are a few evergreen content ideas to get you started:
Share what you’re learning: An easy way to get started is by talking about something you’re interested in. This shows what you are knowledgeable about and helps you keep up to date with your chosen industry.
Ask questions: Another way to up your engagement is by ending your post with a call to action. “Comment if you agree!” and “let me know what you think!” work wonders.
Advice or how-to content: If there’s something you’re passionate about that could set you apart from others in your field, it’s great to show your stuff.
You should also set a preliminary goal on how consistently you plan to post – if your goal is to grow your engagement online, you should start posting at least once per week. Not all social platforms are created equal, either. You can focus on certain ones, like Instagram and Facebook versus YouTube, depending on your niche. Pencil in a certain time each week to dedicate to social media so you avoid spending unnecessary hours scrolling.
Grow Your Network
The best way to start growing your brand is by sharing it with others. Do your research on others in your field that would be useful to connect with online or in person, and send them a follow request or connect with them on LinkedIn before reaching out to have a conversation with them face-to-face. Be personal in your requests and seek knowledge from those around you – they can give you valuable feedback on your brand, too!
Plus, you should always be reciprocal. If someone reaches out to you and asks for your thoughts on something, take them up on it if you are able. Do your best to amplify content that you find beneficial or engaging. •

The GARDENING GENT with Jon Carloftis
Is it too late to plant perennials/spring bulbs in March?
It’s never too late to start gardening! Not only does it give so many rewards to the owner, it is a hobby that others can enjoy, as well. This year has been everything a winter is supposed to be and more! Most of January and February has seen lots of snow, ice and frozen soils ... the hardest winter since the late ‘70s. But March is here and now is the time to get planting with trees, shrubs AND perennials. Perennials come back every year, add so much texture to the garden and bloom for several weeks or even months, depending on the plant. If you get them from the nursery and they’ve been in the hothouse, they will need protection because we are still having lots of cold weather the next month or so. If you already have perennials in the garden that are getting too large for the space, now is the time to divide them and spread the love around the garden.
NOTE: Bulbs are generally planted in the fall, lay dormant all winter and then come up to bloom in spring, so we’ve missed that boat until fall; however, summer blooming bulbs such as Oriental or Asiatic Lilies, Gladiolus, Iris and Cannas can be planted now with a layer of mulch for frost protection, and more tender bulbs such as Begonias, Dahlias and Caladiums should wait another month or so until the earth warms up so they don’t rot in the wet spring.
When is the best time to start spring fertilization on my lawn?
NOW! Late February and March are great times to fertilize most lawn grass, as it is waking up from the winter dormancy. Then, it can be done again in early summer before it gets too hot. You won’t believe how a little fertilizer, warmer weather and good rains will transform your lawn into a rich green carpet. Go now – the sooner the better!
Is spring a good time to plant new trees in my yard?
Although technically, fall is probably the best time to plant most trees because they will get all the good rain and have a start on the springtime growing. However, in my opinion, ANY TIME IS A GOOD TIME TO PLANT A TREE! Spring is also a great time to plant, especially early so it will get established and you won’t have to water much later in the season when it gets hot and dry. And guess what? Summer is also a good time to plant a tree, knowing you WILL have to water it regularly. Think of it this way … just like a baby, a puppy or any new living creature/organism, getting it established is the most important part of the whole process. The better start it has, the better chance it has to survive and thrive. Trees are the most important plant on the planet, turning carbon dioxide into oxygen through photosynthesis. PLEASE, go plant a tree!

Grow Your Own Luck
Money Tree
Pachira aquatica
This is probably the lucky plant that you’re most familiar with. Its distinctive braided trunk is very eye-catching and its upright growth makes it a wonderful houseplant, to say nothing of its easy care needs and the fact that it’s pet-friendly. East Asian cultures believe that this plant brings prosperity and good fortune.
Philodendron Heartleaf
Philodendron hederaceum
As you might’ve guessed from its heart-shaped leaves, this plant is said to bring love, balance and partnership. This climbing plant is toxic to pets and humans, however, so be careful where you place it.
Jade Plant
Crassula ovata
The coin-shaped leaves of this succulent are associated with wealth and good fortune; the plant was named after the stone, which is said to promote the same prosperity. According to the principles of Feng Shui, your jade plant should be placed at the entrance or southeast corner of a room.
Lemon Tree
Citrus limon
Citrus of all types are thought to bring good fortune, with their bright gold fruits. The oils of the plants are used in aromatherapy to bring uplifting energy and happiness while the plant itself represents new beginnings and good health. To grow a lemon tree successfully indoors, it will need lots of light, warmth and consistent watering.
HOME
DÉCOR
People have always assigned myth and meaning to plants and flowers. These fabled flora are said to bring fortune, healing, peace, joy, uplifting energy or even romance. We say it couldn’t hurt to add one or two lucky plants to your space; at the very least, all that greenery is guaranteed to bring you some joy! by Amanda Harper
Peace Lily
Spathiphyllum wallisii
With their beautiful white flowers, peace lilies represent harmony, tranquility and balance; they are also said to filter and purify the air. They require very consistent watering and humidity to flourish. In Feng Shui, they are often placed in bedrooms and home offices.
Lavender
Lavendula
Everyone knows that the gentle scent of lavender brings calm and clarity. What you may not know is that in many cultures, lavender is considered an especially lucky color, bringing peace, optimism and balance.
Shamrock Plant
Oxalis regnellii
Who wouldn’t want to have the luck of the Irish with them year-round? Potted shamrocks are members of the wood sorrel family that stay quite short. While they are known as the false shamrock – as they are not clovers at all – these three-leaved plants do sometimes produce a lucky fourth leaf. These plants are toxic when consumed in large quantities, so keep them away from small children and pets.
Ivy Hedera
There are many varieties of ivy which are suited to indoor growing. Each brings its own unique beauty to your space, but all are thought to offer happiness and good fortune. Ivy enjoys bright, indirect light, so it’s great for a variety of indoor spaces.

The broad leaves of this long-living plant are thought to bring happiness, abundance and wealth. You can find lots of varieties of this plant, which is often considered the perfect houseplant for its easy care and classic look.
Snake Plant
Dracaena trifasciata
Also known as Saint George’s Sword, this tall plant is thought to purify the air. In Feng Shui, this plant should be placed near the front door to invite protection, longevity, strength and good health. That’s pretty lucky for a sharp plant that’s also known as the “mother-in-law’s tongue!”
Lucky Bamboo
Dracaena sanderiana
As the name suggests, lucky bamboo is thought to bring good luck and positive energy. Farms often form these plants into attractive shapes that are certainly eyecatching. They’re considered lucky plants for office spaces, and as such, are often given as corporate gifts.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus
Whether you grow your eucalyptus as a houseplant or bring cut stems in, these coin-shaped leaves are thought to bring a fortune your way! While we’re not exactly sure about that, we do know that these aromatic stems can relieve stress and help alleviate congestion.
Pilea peperomioides
The coin-shaped leaves of this interesting little plant are said to symbolize money and luck. Their curious shape is also a big conversation starter!
Polypodiopsida
This large family of plants is widely considered extremely lucky. In many cultures, they are said to represent new life, growth and protection. It’s recommended to place them near your front door for maximum benefit. •
If you’ve spent the winter months hibernating (as you should), it’s probably time for some good oldfashioned spring cleaning! But what really needs a thorough deep clean, and what could do with just a good dusting?
by Samantha Schnelle
Start Your Spring Clean!
Asthe weather warms up and winter gear is tucked away, it’s the perfect time to give your home a much-needed reset. Spring cleaning isn’t just a great opportunity to focus on the tasks so often overlooked, but also to increase the functionality of your home and help prepare your family for busy times.
These tips and checklists will help you determine what needs to be prioritized.
What should be cleaned annually?
• Unclog gutters to help protect your home’s exterior.
Several areas of your home may take a lot of time and effort to clean. However, everything eventually needs a deep clean, so these should be focused on once a year.
• Remove contents from kitchen cabinets, pantries, fridges and freezers to wipe down the interiors.
• Wipe down baseboards to get rid of dust and reduce allergens within your home.
Use these:
• The Pink Stuff Cleaning Paste (Walmart, $6)
• Scrub Mommy Sponges (Amazon, $14 for 3-pack)
What should be cleaned Seasonally?
Seasonal cleanings are the perfect opportunity to freshen up appliances to catch any issues and reduce unpleasant odors in your kitchen.
• Give your dishwasher a thorough sanitization to reduce odor and ensure ideal performance.
• Run a cleaning cycle on your oven and scrape out any food debris to reduce odor when heating.
• Soak shower heads and faucet filters in vinegar and baking soda to reduce hard water buildup.
This is a time to focus on areas of the home that may be neglected throughout the month. Think of the things in your most used spaces that may need more attention.
• Wash bedspreads, pillow covers and any other washable upholstery.
• Dust shelves, organizational bins, and fans to get rid of dander.
• Wipe down exterior doors and trim to prevent the buildup of dirt.
Use this:
• Mr. Clean Magic Erasers (Amazon, $13 for 10-pack) needs
What should be cleaned Weekly?
Weekly cleaning can prevent the buildup of general messes or allergens like dust, dirt and pet hair. These are areas of the home that can’t go a full month without attention.
• Disinfect bathrooms thoroughly, including toilets, bathtubs, showers, sinks and mirrors.
• Sweep, vacuum, mop or dust furniture to remove dirt and pet hair.
• Change bedsheets and wash towels.
• Wipe down kitchen cabinet doors, refrigerator and the inside of most used appliances such as the microwave and oven.
Use these:
• Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Lemon Verb Vinegar Gel Cleaning Spray (Target, $6)
• Method Almond Wood Floor Cleaner (Target, $13)
What should be cleaned Daily?
Think of what you can straighten up in just a matter of minutes, like countertops and laundry. You should especially focus on the kitchen, where food-borne illness can easily be spread from unwanted germs.
• Wipe down most used surfaces like kitchen and bathroom counters.
• Wipe high-touch surfaces like doorknobs and light switches.
• Wash dirty dishes and put away laundry to eliminate unnecessary clutter for the following day.

Mommy Makeover
Mommy makeover is one of Dr. Nimtz’s most requested procedures, and with good reason. Commonwealth Plastic Surgery offers a variety of belly and breast procedures that can be performed together in their private, stateof-the-art operating facility. Women like to combine belly and breast procedures to save on cost and recovery time. This is certainly a benefit of a mommy makeover and scheduling with Commonwealth Plastic Surgery.
Common breast procedures are breast augmentation, breast lift, or a combination of the two. Commonwealth Plastic Surgery offers various saline and silicone implants for augmentation as well as fat grafting to the breast. As they remove fat from a tummy tuck, they are able to repurpose that fat to other areas, such as the breast, buttock and face to restore lost volume.
Moms not wanting a fully tummy tuck may be candidates for Vaser liposuction with Renuvion. This combination provides permanent fat removal and skin tightening with less downtime or bruising with traditional liposuction. Commonwealth Plastic Surgery is able to remove the fat with a more gentle form of liposuction and shrink the skin fibers surgically, to reveal an improved contour not possible with liposuction alone.
For moms wanting a little rest and relaxation as part of their makeover, Commonwealth Plastic Surgery offers massage and facials at their Lexington location.

Controlling Cortisol
by Erin Oliver
If you’re sick and tired of daily stressors tainting your focus and overall function, join the club! Rather than accepting these anxieties as the norm, try going back to the basics for better mind management.
While the pills and potions have their place (please note, we are NOT doctors), daily stress-relief strategies that are practical and simple seem like a solid first step to peace of mind.
Even though we are far too familiar with this unsettling feeling, let’s take a look at how the docs define stress: Naturopath and hormone experts describe stress as an alarm signal to deal with danger – real or perceived – in order to protect us. Hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are then released. Adrenaline heightens our senses and raises heart rate; cortisol is created by adrenal glands and increases blood sugar levels to prepare us for either fight or flight. After the threat is through, we should find calmness.
Unfortunately, so many of us get stuck in “fight or flight” when everyday stressors feel endless. This can lead to chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, chronic inflammation and even weakened immune systems. Thus, the high importance of regular practices to save our sanity.
Stress Reducing Diet
Studies reveal a consistent, whole foods-based diet with a focus on magnesium, tryptophan (amino acid) and protein-rich foods support balanced cortisol.
• For magnesium, think: greens, dark chocolate, bananas, almonds, edamame, avocado
• For tryptophan: chicken, eggs, oatmeal, tofu, potatoes
• For protein: yogurt, tuna, lentils, tempeh, cottage cheese
Easily incorporate all three stress-relieving superstars – mix yogurt, dark chocolate and nuts together for a relaxing snack. It doesn’t have to be complicated. More recipe ideas:
Ham & Broccoli Fri ata
- 6 large eggs
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- Dash of salt
- 1 - 1 1/4 c. shredded Swiss cheese, divided
- 1 c. cubed fully-cooked ham
- 1 T butter
- 1 c. chopped fresh broccoli
1. Preheat broiler. In a bowl, whisk eggs, pepper and salt. Stir in 1 cup cheese and ham.
2. In a 10-in. ovenproof skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add broccoli; cook and stir until tender. Reduce heat to low; pour in egg mixture. Cook, covered, 4-6 mins. or until nearly set. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
3. Broil 3-4 in. from heat 2-3 minutes or until eggs are completely set. Let stand 5 minutes. Cut into wedges. (adapted from Taste of Home)
Avocado, Pumpkin Seed & Spinach Salad
- 1 T pumpkin seed oil or 2 T sesame oil
- 1 T olive oil
- 1 T cider or white wine vinegar
- 1 firm, ripe avocado, chopped
- 1 punnet alfalfa, radish sprouts or baby cress, snipped with scissors
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 100 g. baby spinach leaves
- 1 tsp. black sesame seeds or nigella seeds
- 1 T pumpkin seeds
1. Whisk the oils and vinegar together in a large bowl and season to taste with sea salt and black pepper.
2. Add the remaining ingredients to the bowl and toss gently to combine. Pile the salad onto a large platter and serve. (adapted from Delicious.)
Gentle Movement
While moving our bodies has always been an encouraged stress reliever, the type of workout you do may be causing additional stress your body doesn’t always need.
Instead of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), OrangeTheory or running when your body is in fight or flight, incorporate lower impact movements. Yoga, pilates or barre can reduce anxiety without evoking extra stress. Even incorporating more walking into your daily routine, a mere 10-15 minutes, can ease your mind.
Decrease Caffeine Intake
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but most of us consume more caffeine than necessary, which can increase anxiety and negatively affect our sleep. Less sleep = more stress.
We’re not suggesting an abolishment of coffee but simply a gradual pullback on daily intake. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises us to consume no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day. Here’s an approximate cheatsheet to give yourself an idea of how much you consume every day:
• Coffee (8 ounces): 100 mg
• Soda (12-ounce can): 30-40 mg
• Celsius Energy Drink (12-ounce can): 200-300 mg
• Cold Brew (16 ounces): 100-200 mg
There are plenty of less aggressive caffeinated beverages that still give us a little kick without the jitters:
• Green Tea (8 ounces): 30 mg
• Yerba Mate (8 ounces): 80-175 mg
• Matcha Latte (8 ounces): 60-90 mg
Consider keeping a “caffeine journal” for a few days and identify how much you actually take in regularly.
Get Creative
Finding ways to express emotions healthily has proven beneficial for mental health, particularly putting thoughts on paper.
Keep a journal and write what weighs you down as well as what you’re grateful for. You may be surprised how much lighter and level-headed you feel afterward.
It’s a Lifestyle
None of the above strategies will put you at peace overnight. Being consistent in your diet, movement and thought management is key to a more stable cortisol. •
Coach Your Curls
BEAUTY
Influencer-grade curly hair is now possible at home, thanks to the internet-certified Curly Girl Method (CGM). If you’re struggling to tame your natural curls and are on the verge of (a) chopping them all off or (b) stifling them with a straightener each morning, you’re in luck.
Before you start, be warned – not all curls are created equal. The Curly Girl Method typically works best for type 3 hair, though people with 2c and 4a hair have seen success with this method, as well (more on hair types below)
In essence, the Curly Girl Method is all about cutting out products that hurt your natural curl pattern (anything drying or harsh) and adding things that heal, hydrate and enhance your hair (moisturizers, gentle cleansers, proteins). Here are some of the things to purge from your routine:
• Heat tools (flat irons, curling irons, most hair dryers; though the occasional diffuser is okay on low heat)
• Sulfates found in traditional drying shampoos
• Silicones (found in 90% of haircare products!) that build up and leave curls dry and flat
• Waxes and mineral oils
• Towel-drying your hair (can rough up your hair follicles and increase frizz and tangles; instead, use a microfiber cloth or cotton t-shirt and plop your hair)
• Alcohols found in most aerosol hair sprays and dry shampoos (substitute for alcohol-free hair spray and dry shampoo)
The Curly Girl Method Step-By-Step:
Step 0: Final “Reset” Wash
Before you fully commit, you need to rid your hair of all the silicone and wax buildup from regular hair products by using a sulfate-based clarifying shampoo. After that, no more sulfates unless you accidentally use a product with silicones and waxes down the line, in which case you’ll need to “reset” your hair again.
Step 1: Co-Wash or Cleanse
Wash your hair with a CGM-approved conditioner (yes, you heard correctly, CONDITIONER) or sulfate-free shampoo. Work it all the way to your scalp and scrub for a full minute. Then, run a wide-tooth comb through your hair before rinsing.
Step 2: Condition
Squish a large handful of CGM-approved conditioner through the bottom half of your hair until fully saturated, then detangle again with your fingers or wide-tooth comb. Now rinse.
Step 3: Style
There are a dozen ways to apply styling products, many involving layering and squishing them into your wet hair. For beginners, use a CGM-approved gel and scrunch a handful into your soaking wet hair from roots to tips.
Step 4: Dry
This is where a lot of people mess up without even realizing it. One method is to “plop” your hair for 5-15 minutes by flipping your wet hair over and pressing it down into a flat cotton t-shirt like an accordion. You could also just scrunch the excess water from your hair using a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt, then air dry or diffuse (on low only!). Once your hair is completely dry, gently scrunch your hair with your hands to remove the crunchy gel coating.
And that's it! Don't panic if you don't see results instantly – it may take up to six weeks to see results due to simple trial-and-error. After you get your routine down, feel free to experiment with different hair drying styles or products (as long as they're Curly Girl Method-approved!).

Managing Principals Geoffrey Smarte, Siegfried Lauren and Jeremy Vaughn have built their firm around a philosophy that goes beyond investment strategies. “We help our clients create, grow, preserve and convey wealth, but we define wealth as more than just financial success. It’s about time and the ability to pursue one’s passions and purpose,” the Managing Principals said.
Smarte Valoren stands apart in an industry where many advisors operate on commissions or hybrid models. As a fee-only fiduciary, the firm is dedicated to full transparency and placing client interests above all else. The team explained, “This requires unrivaled commitment to putting client interests ahead of our own, which we do proudly.”
With backgrounds in institutional wealth management, the team brings strategies once exclusive to hedge funds and ultra high net worth investors to their clients, ensuring they have access to the same sophisticated opportunities as financial powerhouses.
The financial industry is on the verge of an unprecedented shift, with an estimated $85 trillion in wealth expected to transfer from Baby Boomers to future generations over the next 20 years. Smarte Valoren is prepared to meet the moment, bridging the gap between generations with financial planning that accounts for evolving technology, tax strategies and multigenerational wealth preservation.
For Smarte Valoren, success is rooted in a simple principle: The Golden Rule. “Treat others the way you want to be treated. Honesty, integrity and sincerity drive all of our business decisions,” they affirmed. To deliver the highest caliber specialized services, Smarte Valoren Capital Group oversees and directs the operations of multiple subsidiaries, including Valoren Smarte Wealth Advisers (financial planning and portfolio administration), The Watchtower Group (custom risk and legacy management), Smarte Investments (family office and private equity), and VH CPA (tax and business planning).
They also recognize that financial planning doesn’t have to be all business, all the time, saying, “Capital markets are filled with individuals who know the price of everything but the value of nothing—a little humor helps remind us to focus on the big picture.”
Whether clients are planning for the next generation, navigating tax complexities or seeking financial freedom, Smarte Valoren Capital Group provides the expertise and guidance to turn wealth into a meaningful legacy.

Inthe age of fast fashion and clothing prices that are cheaper than ever, people have started opting for safety – the fashion comfort food known as preppy style. This year especially, in the wake of an election and post-pandemic, finding something solid and familiar to wear equates to confidence and stealth wealth. It’s about finding fashion as an anchor, with clothes that endure the test of time and harken back to traditional uniforms of the past. People are looking to be told what’s accepted and what’s taboo to wear, at least on everyday occasions.
When The Official Preppy Handbook hit the mainstream in 1980, prep looked very different than it does now, and it’s taken many forms since the term was first coined. In the ‘80s, preppy style signified the luxury of privacy and exclusivity. To access these clothes, you either had to order them in the mail or travel to Bermuda or Nantucket –they weren’t just things that everyone could wear (or afford).
That was back in an age when most clothing was made so well it lasted for years and years. Now, that is part of the luxury of prep. A classy cardigan and the oldest pair of corduroys you own are now designations of status. Although some clothing has gotten cheaper, some companies are cutting corners on quality, which means owning thick, worn clothing indicates wealth. Here’s how to “prep” for the new age of quiet luxury. the

NEW Classic NAILS
Classy and corporate-approved nails for Spring 2025
Soap Nails
Picture a bar of Dove soap sitting in your shower. Clean, white, a subtle shine. That’s what soap nails are trying to emulate – short nails, pristine cuticles and a nearly wet-looking gloss. With no frills or added shimmer, soap nails are like your natural nails, only a little bit better. To copy this style, either use only a top coat with no color at all over your bare nails or paint with a color that nearly matches your skin tone. And to really nail the look –consistently keep up your nail and cuticle care regimen. You can’t really achieve soap nails without giving them some TLC.
Simple Geometrics
If you’re looking for more than a solid color but still want to look professional, you can’t go wrong with a simple geometric design. Sticking with neutral shades is generally the “cleanest” option and most trendy, but you can always spice things up with a fun color that will still match your work wardrobe.
Warm Chrome
Using neutral tones on your nails doesn’t have to be boring. Another way to add a little something to your mani is by using chrome. A warm-toned glazed peach look is perfect to catch people’s eyes and still match all your outfits.
Micro French Mani
There’s a new twist on the scene for the classic French tip – the micro French mani. It’s exactly what it sounds like: the same as the original, but with as thin of a line of polish at the tip of the nail as possible. The idea is nothing crazy, but it’s another way to add some intrigue to your everyday French tip. For the full effect, try it with short or square nails, and incorporate colors beyond the basic white.

STENGEL HILL Architecture

Serving the healthcare, commercial and higher education markets, Stengel Hill is renowned for its attention to client-focused services with offices in Lexington and Louisville, KY, Nashville, TN and Tampa, FL.
“Our level of client service sets us apart in this industry,” explained the firm’s leaders, including principal and managing partner Paul Edwards, associate principal Bethany Lee, architects Maci Motley and Jared Altobello and senior interior designer Susana Verni.
“We’re keenly aware of our clients’ goals and we shape our processes to ensure our projects meet their measures of success. If our clients are successful, then we’re successful.”
Nowhere is Stengel Hill’s impact more clear than in the healthcare field, where it is ranked as a top-25 national provider by Modern Healthcare.
“Having served the healthcare industry for more than 20 years, I’m motivated to be a leader
for many reasons, which includes investing in others the way I’ve had the great fortune to be invested in during my career,” Edwards said. “These motivators include a sense of responsibility to our long-term clients, the desire to share what I’ve learned with young professionals and a drive to meet personal and professional challenges.”
Edwards has developed a style for his role at Stengel Hill by reading about great leaders from the military, faith, political and private sectors as well as learning firsthand from highly-effective leadership both within and outside of his own organization. Across all of those lessons, his biggest takeaway has been in the importance of serving his team members.
“I take my leadership cues from all of these experiences and do my best to apply various techniques depending on the situation at hand,” he said. “I’ve learned many important lessons over the years, but perhaps none more important than the need to serve those who serve our clients — our amazing professional staff.”
With those lessons handy, Stengel Hill is poised for a bright future, particularly with recent renovations to a Lexington office building that just turned 100 years old.
“Our industry will need to move even faster than we do today, all the while managing more sophisticated building systems, a growing demand for prefabrication and modular construction and overall project complexities in an expanding market,” Edwards said of his vision for the future. “We’ll need to continue to leverage technology and multidisciplined partnerships in a transformative way.”

Bobbi reflected on the incredible families that have been a part of Walnut Hill for generations.

At Walnut Hill, every day is an opportunity to help children discover, grow and dream. “It’s amazing to witness how much a child grows and adjusts to different situations,” Bobbi reflected. “Children have fresh eyes, curiosity and appreciation. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting some of the incredible trailblazers from our city’s history. These remarkable women made lasting impacts from civil rights to voting equality that paved the way for Lexington’s future generations. by Samantha Schnelle
MADELINE McDOWELL BRECKINRIDGE (1872-1920)
Beginnings:
Madeline McDowell Breckinridge was a dedicated women’s rights activist who believed woman suffrage was a crucial way to advance social reform. A Kentucky native, she was the great-granddaughter of Henry Clay and a cousin to renowned Kentucky suffragist Laura Clay. Despite suffering tuberculosis, which eventually caused the amputation of her foot, Madeline remained an unbeatable force in her advocacy for social change.
Contributions:
Her early activism focused on the health and safety of children, including child labor laws, better schools, safer playgrounds and hospitals. Madeline’s commitment to these issues led her to the fight for woman suffrage. She served two terms as president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association (KERA), vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and as legislative chairwoman of the Kentucky Federation.
Madeline became the first woman to address a joint session of the Kentucky legislature, a moment she shared with Laura Clay. She traveled the country fighting for women’s rights, quickly becoming well-known for her incredible public speaking skills. Her tireless efforts were instrumental in securing the ratification of the 19th Amendment by the Kentucky legislature in 1920.
Recognitions::
Following her death on Thanksgiving Day 1920, newspapers named her Kentucky’s “most distinguished woman citizen”, recognizing her remarkable contributions to Lexington, the Commonwealth, and the United States as a whole.
JULIA ETTA LEWIS (1932-1998)
Beginnings:
Julia Etta Lewis was a strong leader in Lexington’s Black Freedom Struggle. After growing up in Lexington, she became a nurse and very gifted speaker who often spent her time standing up for equality and leading peaceful protests for what she believed in.
Contributions:
As a proud member of the Lexington Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), she led several peaceful protests against discriminatory policies, particularly focusing on the Phoenix Hotel’s segregationist practices.
Alongside Audrey Louise Grevious, the president of the local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Julia staged daily sit-ins at the hotel’s restaurant. Their consistent efforts led to the hotel quietly changing its policy and serving the civil rights resisters.
Although their efforts did not receive coverage from the Lexington Herald or the Lexington Leader, Julia and Audrey remained committed to their cause. This successful protest was just one of many victories achieved through the tireless work of local civil rights groups.
Before moving to Ann Arbor, MI, Julia continued to lead non-violent demonstrations and sit-ins, advocating for desegregation in schools, entertainment, shopping, restaurants and public transportation.
Recognitions:
After returning to Lexington, Julia served as an employee with the Housing Authority for 14 years, where she continued to contribute to her community. In recognition of her lifetime of activism, she was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Julietta Market in Lexington was named in her honor in 2020.
ELIZABETH FOUSE (1875-1952)
Beginnings:
Elizabeth Fouse was deeply committed to advancing equality for African American women both locally and nationally. She administered a movement that encouraged self-help, self-sufficiency and dignified behavior.
Contributions:
Elizabeth is best known for her work as the president of Kentucky’s Association of Colored Women (NACW) where she founded a scholarship loan fund that she maintained for over 40 years. In 1920, she founded the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA in Lexington. Additionally, because African American women were excluded from the Christian Women’s Temperance Union, she played a key role in establishing the Kentucky Sojourner Truth Women’s Christian Temperance Union for women of color.
Elizabeth held officer positions for several local organizations, including the Acme Art and Culture Club, the Women’s Improvement Club and Day Nursery, the Women’s auxiliary of the Emancipation League and the Baptist Women’s Educational Convention..
Recognition:
In 1944, Governor Simeon Willis appointed her to serve on the Kentucky Commission for the Study of Negro Affairs. Through her tireless civic activism, Elizabeth Fouse not only created and sustained institutions that empowered the Black community but helped them to navigate racism and demand their political rights. •

MONO CHROME MUSES
Dressing in black and white doesn’t have to be dull. In fact, monochrome fashion can be an effortless display of luxury without being too in-your-face. The absence of color allows the eye to take in your look without stopping, which creates the illusion of strength, added height and general put-togetherness, even in the most casual of outfits.
To get the most out of a monochrome fit, focus on making textures, patterns and silhouettes stand out. Layer on accessories and unique outerwear to keep your look from falling flat. A little bling can go a long way, especially when paired with a neutral backdrop like black or white clothing.
Use these ideas to make the most of your monochrome.

Some beauty trends will never go out of style. Most return in a cyclical fashion, bringing interesting new takes to old classics. It’s time to pull out your old velcro rollers that have been sitting in the attic since the 90s and the old hairstyles you haven’t thought about since the 70s. Here are some of our favorite trends, tips and tricks from decades past that are back in the mainstream for 2025!
Classic Red Nails
While fresh takes on French manicures returned to the fold last year, this year calls for something a little bolder. Neutral nails can make you feel put together, sure, but a pop of red exudes the power and confidence we’re all looking for in 2025.
Semi matte Lipstick
Lip gloss will always have its moments, but some occasions call for something more timeless. We’re not talking about the dry matte lipsticks of the early 2010s, but instead, return to natural-finish lipsticks to mature your look.
Powder Blush
Pond's cream
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention Pond’s Cream when talking about beauty secrets of the past. A favorite of grandmas everywhere for the past 100 years, Pond’s Cream is a staple to leave on the nightstand to use as a moisturizer or even makeup remover!
The biggest change in 2020s-era makeup has been blush – and lots of it. And while some new liquid blushes do the job, powder blush has been a consistently great choice for the best coverage that keeps color on your cheeks all day.
Pond’s Cold Cream (Walmart, $6)
Blowout Haircuts
Though sleek hair and shaggy cuts have been the focus for the past few years, we can expect a return to a classic and lowmaintenance option for this year. Faceframing layers give effortless volume that can be curled for extra height or left alone for a put-together model look reminiscent of a 90s runway.
Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in “Pillow Talk” (Ulta Beauty, $35)

Hair Rollers
Subtle, bouncy curls have returned once again, and the best way to achieve the best volume is still with classic Velcro rollers. It’s time to give them another try!
Brown Mascara
There was a time when women would match their mascara shade to their hair color instead of just choosing the blackest black, which can seem unnecessarily harsh. Brown mascara gives a softer, more natural finish that can appear more flattering to those with lighter hair.
Sleeping on Silk
While many people have recently discovered this trick on TikTok, it’s actually been common knowledge since the 50s. Who knew sleeping could be rough on hair? It’s best to sleep on a silk pillowcase or a silk scarf to prevent breakage and frizziness.
Chanel No. 5
Vaseline
This perfume was one of Marilyn Monroe’s favorites throughout the years (enough said) and it’s been a classic since 1921. Now you can wear it as an original perfume or as body oil, hair mist or lotion to keep the scent all day and all night long.
There’s a reason why Vaseline has been a staple in everyone’s vanities for the last 150+ years – because it’s good for virtually anything. It soothes scrapes and burns, helps heal rashes, softens dry, cracked lips and more.
High Tops Self-Grip Rollers (Sephora, $12)
Glossier Lash Slick Lift and Lengthening Mascara (Sephora, $20)
Blissy Silk Pillowcase (Amazon, $59)
Chanel No. 5 Parfum (Chanel, $305)

Grand Entry
Welcome, y’all! Your entryway does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to greeting your guests… so what first impression is this important space providing?
An ideal entryway should be both functional and expressive, giving guests a smooth transition into your home and hospitality. If your entry isn’t giving off good vibes, these tips can help you upgrade it into something extraordinary! by Amanda Harper
Clever Storage
Your entryway is the spot where you probably drop your stuff before heading on inside – everything from your dog’s leash to stinky gym bags can end up being discarded here. Clutter does not provide a warm welcome!
Rather than letting the mess make a statement, you should make sure your storage works for you. Choose furniture that makes it easy to stash your supplies, be it drawers, cubbies, bins or cabinets. Tables with skirts can be a sneaky way to hide your stuff!
Art Attack
This high-traffic area of your home is the perfect place for a mini gallery of your favorite art. This puts your personality and style on display as soon as your guests step inside. Many homeowners choose to intersperse photos of family with their favorite paintings for a homey touch. Don’t forget about sculptures, textiles and other mixed-media artworks that can add dimension and texture to the space.
Know Your Place
As we mentioned, the entryway is a place of transition from the outside world into your intimate domestic sphere. Utilizing material and elements that mirror the home’s exterior or neighborhood can make your home feel like an extension of the outdoors – and vice versa! For instance, if you have a colonial-style house, some Georgian-style furniture in your foyer can extend some of that classic flair inside. If your street is as pretty as a picture with its many trees, some nature-inspired elements like branches set in a demijohn will make your entryway feel like a part of the scene.
Blume Architecture
Prints Charming
If you’ve ever held a copy of TOPS in your hands, you know what we’re going to say next: wallpaper, wallpaper, wallpaper! Entryways are a wonderful place to utilize wallpaper to set the tone for guests stepping into your home. Each paper brings its own flair to the space. Some prints will draw the eye up while others will give the area a more intimate feel; delicate florals will add a subtle, feminine charm while bold stripes will create movement and zing.
Get Grounded
Rugs can really tie a room together. Runners not only protect the floor in busy hallways, but also visually draw the eye along the space. If your entryway is larger, an area rug may be the right call, grounding the décor in the space. In very small spaces, even a simple indoor mat can give your guests a natural place to pause and appreciate the welcome.
Don’t forget about your stairs! Adding a stair runner will not only help your treads last longer, but it can also give a personal touch that provides so much character.
Table It
It’s natural that when you come inside, you’re going to want a spot to sit your bag, keys or wallet, even if just temporarily. Most entryways center on a table. Larger entries may have a round table situated in the center while the flow of some may dictate that side tables be placed along the walls.
No Entryway? No Problem.
If your home lacks a dedicated space for an entryway, that shouldn’t stop you from making the first impression a good one. As much as you’re able, keep what’s visible from the front door tidy; in fact, that’s the best tip for any entry.
If you’d like to create the feel of an entryway without putting up walls, consider placing a natural focal point for the eye, such as an accent wall or statement piece of furniture. That kind of arresting feature can create the illusion of a more intimate space, even if the room is wide open.
The lack of a traditional entryway area shouldn’t deter you from following any of these tips. Treating a space as an entryway will certainly make it feel like one, even if there’s no clear deliniation in the floorplan. If you have a front door, then you have an entryway! So proceed with total confidence. •

5 Things That Are (Possibly) Making Your Entryway Look Dated
Fuhgeddaboudit
If there’s one thing that will instantly signal to a visitor that your space is feeling its age, it’s neglect. Peeling, chipped door or window frames, floors that haven’t been polished in years, broken tile, sagging curtain rods and other “I’ll get to it later” issues are often most visible in your entryway.
Our suggestions: Make these projects a priority! Whether your entryway is simply in need of a good deepcleaning or you have some serious renovations on the horizon, consider the major impact that these improvements will have – on visitors and your own family!
Trends do come and go. While you can always hope that your space will come back around to what’s trendy, there are some elements that may be giving your guests today the impression that your space is stuck in days gone by. We have some tips if you want ot update. That said, always remember the first rule of interior design: the only person you gotta please is yourself!
Old Standbys
Furniture that is old – but not yet antique – is often a dead giveaway that your space hasn’t been refreshed in a while. While some pieces will prove to be timeless, not everything can fit this bill.
Our suggestions: Take a look at your furniture and evaluate it objectively: is it a classic, or is it something you’ve just grown used to? It goes without saying that anything that is damaged or which you simply do not use is an obvious “toss.” Likewise, inexpensive pieces that now feel a little shoddy and “cheap” compared to the rest of your home? Yeah, it’s probably time to say goodbye. Something special will really reinvigorate your space.
Gray Day
“Greige” was the hottest color for a long while, but gray tones have been replaced by warmer, more inviting hues. While many people have an aversion to true beige – we all have nightmare flashbacks to our first apartments – you can still employ warm tones without stepping into bland territory.
Our suggestions: Take a look at the color palette for your space and search for ways to incorporate warm hues or vibrant color in lieu of gray – or, in some cases, stark white. You’ll be amazed how much cozier the space feels!
Word Art Signs
This once-trendy home décor standby strongly suggests that your space was decorated in the very early 2000s. Everyone is aware that this is a “HOME” and that “IN THIS HOUSE, WE LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE,” so the sign isn’t really necessary, right? But don’t take our word for it; according to houzz, farmhouse interior décor is the design style that’s most quickly falling out of favor.
Our suggestions: Rather than letting your décor speak to your guests quite literally, try a more subtle approach; show your guests your values and interests without having your space scream them. Replace word art with artworks and objects that hint at the sentiments your signs were expressing so explicitly.
It’s Giving… Nothing
To be frank, a bland entryway generally gives the subconscious impression that you moved in two weeks ago and haven’t unpacked all your boxes yet. With nothing else to occupy the eye, the exact age of the space will be very apparent. If you renovated it a year ago, that’s probably great news. But for most folks, that’s very, very bad. If your home is more than 10 years old and you’ve left it just as the builder designed it – more or less completely untouched, devoid of your own personal flair – it’s time to roll up your sleeves.
Our suggestions: Add some character pronto!
This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to completely renovate the space. Survey your paint, flooring, trims and other details to see if anything is showing its age. Find creative ways to update what’s already there if a reno isn’t in your budget.
For most entryways, simply adding decorative touches will really change the impression they give off. Mirrors, personal accessories, family photos and florals are quick ways to give a space a lot of life. Changing the paint color of your walls, door or stairs can really bring the space into 2025 in a flash. •

Take Stalk
One of our favorite signs that spring is on its way? Seeing fresh, bright stalks of asparagus popping up at the store.
Technically, asparagus is a perennial flowering plant. Left to grow, it can reach five feet tall – or higher – with wispy stems, yellow flowers and (unfortunately toxic) red berries. In fact, asparagus was once classified in the lily family.
But what we think of as asparagus is really the young shoot. If you’ve never seen asparagus being grown in a garden, they grow right out of the ground looking like they’re ready for your plate – honestly, it’s so comical, it looks like someone is pulling a prank!
Nutritionally speaking, asparagus is a low food energy option that comes with some pretty impressive benefits. It’s a good source of Vitamins C, A, K and E (so you can have your CAKE and eat it, too!) Asparagus also offers a lot of folate per serving and some potassium. It’s also a good source of antioxidants while offering both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Aside from enjoying asparagus stalks raw, steamed, baked, air fried, roasted or grilled, there are tons of ways to use this vegetable in your cooking. It’s lovely as the base of spring soups or served up in pasta dishes. You can shave
it for salads or pickle it for a tangy bite later. Just be aware that overcooking asparagus can result in a limp, mushy texture and dull color that is deeply unappealing; worse, it can be downright bland in flavor. Many recipes instruct you to cook them quickly and plunge them in an ice bath to stop the process. Always keep an eye on cooking asparagus and check it for doneness: tender, but slightly crunchy is generally the ideal texture.
Ready to address the TMI elephant in the room? (Skip this paragraph if you’d rather not discuss the restroom right before perusing recipes.) Asparagus is known for one smelly side effect. The breakdown of asparagusic acid creates harmless sulfur compounds that you pass in your urine. What’s interesting is that this effect doesn’t happen to everyone. Scientists aren’t quite sure why, but one hypothesis suggests that some people lack the ability to metabolize asparagusic acid. It’s also been suggested that some people have a genetic component that prevents them from smelling the stink at all – in fact, one study says that the majority of people actually can’t detect this particular smell. So, next time you have asparagus, you have no reason to be embarrassed. by Amanda Harper

8 oz. asparagus, trimmed
Combine farro and stock in a large pot over high heat; bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook until farro is soft, yet chewy, about 25 minutes. Drain liquid and let cool.
Meanwhile, place feta in a bowl. Top with Top with 1/2 c. olive oil, mint, lemon zest, lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. garlic and 1/4 tsp. black pepper. Mash with a fork. Set aside.
Fill a bowl with ice and water; set aside. Bring a small pot of water and plain salt to a boil over high heat. Add green peas and blanch until just tender but still bright green, 1-2 minutes; transfer to ice bath to stop cooking.
Heat a skillet over high heat; when hot, reduce heat to medium. Add 1 T olive oil and remaining garlic; cook until aromatic, about 10 seconds. Add sugar snap peas, snow peas, 1/2 tsp. sea salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until peas are crisp, yet tender and still bright green, about 3 minutes. Remove to a sheet pan or cutting board and spread into a single layer; let cool.
In the skillet, heat remaining 1 T olive oil; add the asparagus, remaining sea salt and remaining pepper. Cook until tender yet crisp, about 3 minutes. Remove from pan and spread in a single layer to cool about 10 minutes.
Toss farro, peas and asparagus together in a large bowl. Spoon the feta mixture over the salad and toss to combine. If desired, top with additional fresh chopped mint. (adapted from Food & Wine)

MSU prepared me with the knowledge and skills I needed to be successful. But the staff made sure I had internship opportunities to apply everything I learned in the classroom. During my senior year, I had the opportunity to complete an internship with Deloitte, one of the Big 4 accounting firms internationally!
My life was forever changed the day that I became an Eagle, and I will forever be grateful for choosing MSU as my University!

Ina Pickle
The hot trend we never saw coming: pickles. Who doesn’t love these crunchy, green treats? Whether you’re having a spear alongside a delicious deli sandwich or sneaking a whole dill straight from the fridge at 1am, pickles add a burst of salty, sour flavor that satisfies like nothing else. Expect to see pickles everywhere you turn this year. From trending social media videos to cozy at-home potlucks, pickles are sure to stay on your radar in 2025. by Amanda Harper
These days, people are looking to add some pizzazz to their lives wherever they can. So why not make your late-night snack sparkle?
Over the last couple of months, folks on social media began sharing a fabulous – albeit bizarre – trend: adding edible glitter to their pickle jars to create what they call “Pretty Pickles.”
Why? It’s fun, it’s inexpensive and it adds a little flair to an otherwise mundane moment. The pickles come out coated in ultra-fine glitter, making them a dazzling treat. Meanwhile, the brine in the jar almost looks like a swirling magic potion. How fun!
If you think Pretty Pickles are ridiculous, you’re right! Users who jump on the trend are doing so because it’s harmless fun, a silly way to elevate their favorite crunchy snack.
Want to try it for yourself? Get some food-grade edible glitter, which is easily found online or at baking supply stores. Pour a little into your jar of pickles and give it a shake. Users on TikTok say that for most jars of pickles, white or clear glitter works best. Colorful glitters can change the color of the brine and the exterior of the pickle. Be aware that certain colors of glitter may not play well with the natural green-yellow hue of your pickles: pink, for instance, can create a sad brown brine.
Pretty Pickles Fridge Pickles
The process of pickling can take weeks or even months and it involves canning, which can be intimidating for even the most accomplished home cook. Quick pickles are the bright, crunchy alternative that your kitchen needs!
Quick pickling is when you simply soak your sliced cucumbers in a brine you heated on the stove. Once cool, you let them pickle for at least an hour, but ideally overnight. Then, you’ll have a pickle that is bright with lots of cucumber taste, but some of the tang you look for in a traditional pickle. The downside of this quick process is that the pickles don’t last as long; generally, you can keep them refrigerated for up to two weeks in the brine.
Of course, you can pickle more than just cucumbers. Onions, radishes, jalapeños, asparagus, okra, carrots and more can be turned into refrigerator pickles. Tougher veggies will need to stay in the brine longer. The thinner you slice them, the faster they’ll pickle.
How can you use fridge pickles? Put them on burgers, salads, sandwiches and more. The vibrant tartness is a wonderful contrast to the heavy flavors of a charcuterie board or Asian-inspired dish.

DIY Pickles
6 c. cucumbers, thinly sliced
2 c. onion, thinly sliced
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. mustard seed
1/2 tsp. celery seed
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1/2 tsp. dried dill/dill seed
Place cucumbers and onions together in a nonreactive bowl. Set aside.
In a saucepan, combine the remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar is fully dissolved. Pour over cucumber mixture. Let cool completely. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. (adapted from Taste of Home)
Notes: If preferred, transfer pickles to a clean mason jar for storage.
If you want more flavorful pickles, experiment with the spices included. Coriander seeds, cloves, bay leaves, ginger and crushed red pepper flakes can all bring a lot to the party.

Pickle Sips
Dua Lipa earned millions of views when she shared a video of herself mixing up a strange sip: Diet Coke, pickle juice and pickled jalapeños. While her concoction may not be a hit with everyone – Gordon Ramsey spit it out on camera – bartenders have known for years that pickles can play well with some of your favorite beverages.
Take the “pickleback,” reportedly invented in 2006 by a Bushwick Country Club bartender. You chase a shot of whiskey with a shot of pickle brine. The idea was that it makes the whiskey more palatable, neutralizing the burn and any unpleasant flavors. Yes, really. But since its invention, it has gained cult status with runners and folks hoping to avoid a hangover; their theory is that it helps replenish lost electrolytes. (There’s some credence to this: pickle juice can help with a hangover, but only once you’re already dehydrated.)
There are plenty of cocktails out there for pickle lovers. Margaritas, martinis, and Bloody Marys can easily incorporate pickle juice.
Pickle-tini
2 1/2 oz. vodka or gin 1/2 oz. dry vermouth 1/2 oz. pickle brine
Add ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled, around 20 seconds. Pour into a glass rimmed with salt. Garnish with a pickle spear or sprig of fresh dill. (adapted from Bon Appetit)
Pickle de Gallo
Pickle dips, spreads and relishes are more popular than ever, adding a zingy crunch wherever they’re placed. Pinterest saw a 65% rise in searches for Pickle de Gallo following the restock of the original Grillo’s condiment, and they predict that interest in this fresh take on pickle relish will ramp up this grilling season. This salsa combines the brightness of fresh pico de gallo with the delicious pickled flavors you love for something totally unexpected.
Make Your Own
1 cucumber, diced
1 c. dill pickles, diced 1/2 c. sweet onion, diced 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
1 tsp. jalapeño, minced
1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 c. pickle brine
Toss cucumber, pickles, onions, bell pepper, jalapeño, garlic and salt together in a large bowl. Drizzle pickle brine over mixture and toss again. Cover tightly and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. (adapted from Foodie With Family)

Senior guard Georgia Amoore has done things in her career that few players have done, but thinking about her legacy is not something she worries about.
She was the only active player – man or woman – in Division I basketball to have at least 2,000 points and 800 assists. She tied the school scoring record with a 43-point outing at Oklahoma. She’s on numerous awards lists and certainly will earn AllAmerican honors again.
The Australian native followed coach Kenny Brooks to Kentucky after playing four years for him at Virginia Tech. Together, the two have helped rejuvenate the Kentucky women’s program to a level no one could have expected so quickly, and Amoore has become a fan favorite, especially with younger fans.
“It happened so quickly here. I could not be more honored to see fans wearing my T-shirts, jersey or number,” the point guard said. “People come up and tell me I am their favorite player, and that goes a long way.”
Amoore makes herself available to fans for pictures and autographs, especially after any UK home game.
“It means so much knowing they idolize or look up to me, and to spend time or give attention that those fans want or need to make them feel good is easy for me to do,” Amoore said. “They support me, and I want to spend genuine time with them whenever I can. That’s something I have always done. I am a pretty unselfish person and know what an honor it is to have people support me like they have. I have always been kind of accessible to people except maybe before a game which is not the best time.
“It’s really cool on away trips when people watch us play and then wait around to see me and have a bunch of stuff for me to sign. At Vanderbilt, someone was wearing an Australian jersey. There were fans in Kentucky gear at Oklahoma. That’s just cool.”
No one respects Amoore more than Brooks. He’s allowed her to sit in on coaches’ meetings this season and calls her his “mini-me” on the court because of her ability to lead the team. They seem almost inseparable, but after this season ends, Amoore will move on to the WNBA and other pursuits, while Brooks will continue to elevate Kentucky women’s basketball.
“We know what we have is special, and we are trying to enjoy the limited time we have left together,” Amoore said.
“He has put me in a position to succeed. He has taught me how to be an individual and how to take on challenges. He’s told me at the next level I have got to learn to speak up for myself. The coolest thing is that he is not just using me for his team. He is doing everything for a reason: to train me for what lies ahead. I know I will always have him as a resource. He will not be my coach, but he will always be my friend.”
While Kentucky has put itself back on the national landscape this season, Amoore believes the “best part” is yet to come for the women’s program.
“The basketball culture here is very appealing. You have the glitz and glamour of the SEC. They have the resources and facilities you need to recruit. They have sponsorships. They have so much to sell to new recruits and transfers,” Amoore said.
“The success we have had in year one is going to be very appealing to people (players). There is still a lot to do, but we have got the program in a good position. The appeal of Kentucky is back.”

St. Patrick’s Day is officially observed on Monday, March 17th. It’s your lucky day – we have your guide to celebrating in Lexington this March!
Lexington St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival
Saturday, March 15 | Festival begins: 10:45 AM Parade begins: 1:00 PM | Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the longest-running civic citywide event in Lexington. The parade is only a small part of the all-day festivities, including the annual “Blessing of the Keg” and a lineup of musicians, singers and dancers from across Kentucky.
The Bluegrass Irish Society was formed in 1980, with the annual parade being its first activity featuring Ed McMahon from the Johnny Carson Show as its first Grand Marshal. Over the years, the parade has honored special guests such as the Irish Army Pipe Band directly from Dublin.

Shamrock Shuffle 3K
Saturday, March 15 | 8:30 AM | Downtown Lexington
Lexington Habitat for Humanity’s 19th annual Shamrock Shuffle is back for another year. Net proceeds from the event benefit Lexington Habitat for Humanity to provide a pathway to affordable home ownership in Lexington. The race is open to runners of all ages and skill levels, and even dogs are invited! It will kick off the spring racing season with awards, prizes (if you’re lucky) and a costume contest.

St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl
Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day weekend with a bar crawl around downtown Lexington! Join a group of friends, find a coordinated group bar crawl or even book a ride on the Big Blue Pedaler to make the most of your time. Many local bars and restaurants offer new St. Patrick’s Day specials closer to the holiday, so take a look at your favorites before going out.
Visit a Local Restaurant
While many local restaurants will have green-themed or St. Patrick’s Day specials, they are usually not announced until the week before the holiday, so while we cannot guarantee what specials they will have yet, try a few of our favorites! The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery is always a solid Celtic-themed meal. Drake’s is known for themed monthly food and drink (and even sushi) specials. Carson’s is great for a sit-down meal inbetween celebrations. Looking for breakfast (or dessert, depending on how you look at it)? North Lime Donuts, DV8 Kitchen and Martine’s Pastries are good for a sweet treat and if you’re lucky, maybe even something green.
