Tired Eyes
“I LOOK TIRED”
is one of the most frequent complaints we hear from patients. Tired, or aged, appearance of the eye occurs due to multiple factors. First, there are changes in the eyelid skin as well as the skin in the area around the eyelids. Secondly, there are changes in the fat compartments within the eye socket and the area around it. Lastly, muscle activity can create or enhance wrinkles.
THE MUSCLE FACTORS AROUND THE EYES ARE THE EASIEST TO ADDRESS. Wrinkles around the eyes, known as “crow’s feet” may be successfully treated non-surgically with a neuromodulator, such as Botox® or Dysport®.
EXCESS EYELID SKIN IS THE HALLMARK OF A TIRED LOOKING EYE. A surgical procedure known as blepharoplasty remains one of the most useful and simple procedures to make you look younger, brighter, and refreshed. The goal of surgery, always, is to look more youthful, but still look like you. For the upper eyelids, blepharoplasty involves removal of extra skin, muscle, and fat. The scar is positioned along the upper eyelid crease. After surgery, patients will frequently comment that the operation “opened my eyes.” The lower eyelids tend to develop wrinkled, extra skin, puffy fat pads, and a tear trough crease (the oblique line which extends downward from the eye). As with the upper eyelid,
the most effective treatment for excess skin is surgery. The incision is usually placed just below the eyelashes.
CHANGES IN THE AMOUNT OF FAT IN THE LOWER EYELID AND UPPER CHEEK ALSO HAVE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE APPEARANCE OF THE LOWER EYELID AREA. Modern blepharoplasty procedures focus on redistribution of fat and maintenance of volume to avoid a hollow, aged look. The area underneath the eyelid may be restored simultaneously with transfer of fat from some other body area (fat grafting) or with a dermal filler such as Restylane®, Juvederm®, Lyft®, Voluma®, or others. The goal of these treatments is to smooth the eyelid and blend the transition from the eyelid to the cheek as seamlessly as possible into a youthful contour. Surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery have the skills needed to address all of these factors of eyelid aging. Dr. David Kirn is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon who is devoted to advanced techniques in Cosmetic Surgery of the Face, Breast, and Body. Dr. Kirn, Carey Sanders, RN, Shirley Ramsey DNP, APRN, and Tara Smith APRN offer a full spectrum of non-surgical treatments such as Botox®, Dysport®, Dermal 859.296.3195 kirnplasticsurgery.com Fillers, & Laser.
Silver anniversary festivities going on throughout the year at all Morning Pointe locations! Morning Pointe Senior Living will mark 25 years of service to seniors throughout the calendar year 2022 as the senior living, personal care and Alzheimer’s memory care company celebrates its founding in 1997 by healthcare entrepreneurs Greg A. Vital and J. Franklin Farrow. What originally began as a healthcare real estate development company quickly transitioned into a mission-centered management company dedicated to changing the lives of aging residents well into their retirement years. Today, Morning Pointe Senior Living serves over 1,700 residents with 1,600 associates providing individualized care for 36 (and growing) campuses across the Southeast—all with Vital and Farrow still in the captains’ chairs, charting a path for the next 25 years and beyond. They remain one of the few entrepreneurs left in the senior living industry who are still involved in the daily operation of the company they founded. “A quarter century ago, Franklin and I cast a vision to bring a better senior living offering to complement skilled care in the Southeast, and as we look back across those years, I believe we have accomplished that vision and more,” stated Greg Vital, president of Morning Pointe. “It has been an honor to provide compassionate care wrapped in hospitality and socialization to thousands of residents throughout these 25 wonderful years.” Morning Pointe Senior Living’s 36 senior campuses in five states across the Southeast focus on two niche services: assisted living or personal care in Kentucky and Alzheimer’s memory care. Innovations like a farm-to-table dining program, in-house physical and occupational therapy partnership programs,
along with a patented Meaningful Day™ memory care program for residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have added value to an already thriving business model. This innovation—combined with improvements in healthcare and technology—has helped Morning Pointe associates continue to efficiently serve a growing population of seniors. The Morning Pointe team is happy to serve seniors in six cities throughout Kentucky. There are locations in Danville, Frankfort, Lexington, Louisville, Richmond and Russell. Three new locations are coming on board in the southeast to further Morning Pointe’s 25-year mission of providing a rewarding senior living experience with easily accessible clinical services to help residents make the most of every day. “It’s been an amazing journey,” said Vital. “Here’s to 25 more years of serving the greatest generation and providing a wonderful career to many healthcare associates.” Morning Pointe invites the greater public into its yearlong anniversary celebration through a special campaign called ‘25,000 Touches.’ Through service to seniors and in the spirit of volunteerism and giving back, Morning Pointe has a goal to “touch” 25,000 community partners and volunteers throughout 2022.

FINDING YOUR IDEAL
Work/Life Balance by Donna Ison
TOPSinLex.com | March 2022

T
hese days, more than ever, the very mention of work/life balance provokes eye rolls, head shakes, or outright laughter. With many of us working where we live, it is becoming exceedingly difficult to keep a clear distinction between career, family, and self. The very term “home office” implies that there is no distinction between our work space and our house. Couple that with 24-hour-access via half a dozen devices and it’s next to impossible to know where the workday ends and leisure time begins. However, finding work/life is crucial for our mental health and physical wellbeing—so I talked to three experts on the topic.
Work/life balance basics Before delving into ways you can achieve work/life balance, there are three questions to ask:
• What is it? • Do I have it? • If not, how do I achieve it? According to Colene Eldridge, CEO of Be More Consulting, “Work/Life balance is the unicorn! 'Balance' implies that it should be equal at all times, and the reality is it can't be, and it shouldn't be... that should not be the goal. What I encourage you to think about is work/life integration.” Eldridge, known as Coach Colene, is also the founder of the EmpowHer Conference women's leadership event and the author of Monday Morning Pep Talks. She explained integration means recognizing that, during certain phases in life, family or self may demand—and deserve—a greater portion of your time and energy. And, at others, the lion’s share will be gobbled up by your career. The key is learning how to handle the imbalance by being fully present in whatever activity requires your attention at the time. One of her favorite mantras is “Be here now.” Jivamukti Yoga Instructor Suzie Wheeler echoed this sentiment. She stated, “I used to tell my students, balance comes and goes. It's unrealistic to expect to have perfect balance in every pose. I feel that way about life/business as well. I only need to balance the task in front of me.” Wheeler, a graduate of The Life Coach School, is a dating and relationship coach who focuses on single mothers and mothers in blended families.
Beating Burnout So, how can you tell if you are handling the natural imbalance or it is handling you? In a word: burnout. Burnout displays as an overall feeling of depletion accompanied by lack of motivation, decreased sense of accomplishment, increased sense of being overwhelmed, and the loss of the ability to find inspiration or joy—even in activities that used to spark you. “A lot of people think burnout are just the physical symptoms of fatigue and exhaustion, but there's so much more to it than that. Burnout can take its toll in all aspects of your life,” Coach Colene said, “The key with burnout is to not just try to push your way through it. That doesn't work—ever! You really have to care your way through it."
Three Top Tips There are three essential components of achieving a more balanced life.
• Realize the importance of routine. • Develop healthy boundaries. • Learn to unplug. Tip 1: Set a schedule for yourself— and stick to it Paige Hankla suggests people focus on routine tempered with flexibility and flow. She stated, “Everyone should set up a basic routine for themselves based on their own personal priorities in life. However, the routine shouldn't be so rigid that you can't move things around and go with the flow based on how you feel, children's schedules, and any other additional priorities that show up.” And as the founder and CEO of PlayThink, which promotes positive lifestyles and mindsets via online and in-person events, she urges people to schedule time for play: “Plan for fun! Write it in your calendar. Set up once a week friend-dates, lunch meetings, hikes, or whatever strikes your fancy.”
"'Balance' implies that it should be equal at all times, and the reality is it can't be, and it shouldn't be... that should not be the goal. What I encourage you to think about is work/life integration." - Coach Colene

According to the Mayo Clinic, you should aim to stand and stretch every 30 minutes or so during your workday. In addition to countering the negative effects of prolonged sitting, this gives you time to practice some of your good work/life balance techniques!
TOPSinLex.com | March 2022
29
Hankla also encouraged incorporating “transition activities” into your schedule to separate the segments of your life. This could as simple as a walk, 10 minutes of meditation, or listening to your favorite song. “Setting up these parameters can help alert the brain that you're moving from one part of your day to the next and soothe the transition,” Hankla explained. Wheeler takes a similar approach. She stated, “I take 20 minutes to transition from work to relaxing. A yoga headstand or a walk around the block is my equivalent of happy hour to unwind after work.”
Tip 2: Bring on the boundaries Perhaps there is no greater challenge than learning how to set limits and simply saying “no,” without guilt, when those limits are challenged. Even as a life coach, Wheeler finds it tricky to set and keep distinct boundaries, especially while working from home. She admitted, “I would find myself working at 9pm at night when I was supposed to be spending time with my son. Now I operate as if I am going to work. I have a start time, I get ready, I am flexible, I take lunch, and I get off at 4pm.”

Coach Colene agrees and encourages people to make a list of what acceptable for you and what is not acceptable to you in each area of your life, including relationships, work, social interactions, health, lifestyle, and even entertainment. “Boundaries improve everything, but we're so scared of hurting other people's feelings that we don't use them. Boundaries are your friend,” Coach Colene said.
On the subject of social media, Hankla has a plan for keeping it positive: “I set myself up for success by only following leaders in my chosen field and unfollowing anything else. I do my best to set up a social media feed that is only inspirational, and I set limits.”
Tip 3: Unplug and unfollow
As working from home is becoming the norm for many, family schedules are returning to round-the-clock, and social media continues to inundate every aspect of our culture, it is up to each of us to take back our time, prioritize play, and determine how we want to expend our precious energy. Even if perfect work/life balance is a myth, we can all take steps to create a more enjoyable existence. •
When it comes to screen time and constantly being tethered to a device, Coach Colene suggests assigning time each week to be completely offline and setting the “Do Not Disturb” function on your phone.

Where would Dorothy be without her iconic ruby slippers or Cinderella without her legendary glass heels? Create your own icon moment this year with a new pair of sky-high platforms, or by bringing back the fabulous kitten heel. To some womens dismay, Y2K styles have been making a comeback in recent years, and sorry to say, 2022 will be no different. We’re wearing Mary Janes, ballet flats, and even clogs. What goes around, comes back around ladies!

As 2000's pop princess Jessica Simpson would say, "these boots are made for walkin’". Well, these shoes will be perfect for showing off on the street, and will make everyone passing by wonder where they can purchase a pair of their own. Men, don’t worry, we included options for you too, even though choices have pretty much stayed the same since the 1970s.

Are you guilty of any of these email missteps?
In our world of fast-paced communication, it seems like the social niceties are ever-changing. What was perfectly appropriate even just five years ago can be considered a no-no in today’s back-and-forths. While the dreaded “reply all” blunder remains the king of all email mishaps, there are some subtler gaffes that you might be committing... by Amanda Harper

93% 35 out of
of people in a Grammarly workplace survey fess up to making email faux pas. HALF have written something that was misunderstood.
say they have been embarrassed by an email they sent at work. Over 20% of people have been told that their email tone is “too harsh or aggressive.”
“Per my last email…”
You know the feeling: someone asked you a question and totally disregarded the fact that it was already answered in a previous communication. In your frustration, you type those four magic words. Unfortunately, everyone knows what it really means: “See below, you idiot.” It’s natural to want to point out that you’ve already clearly communicated the information. However, the reality is that it doesn’t benefit anyone in the exchange – and it can come off as a bit petty. So just go ahead and copy/paste the answer and hit send.
Sarcasm
It’s often very difficult to communicate sarcasm properly through email. If the recipient doesn’t catch your sarcasm, they end up taking you at your word, leading to a miscommunication. If the recipient does catch your meaning, they might find you unpleasant rather than funny, as you probably intended.
Bad Signatures
While this may feel like an outdated practice to many from the younger generation, email signatures can help in many situations. Including your name, title, business, phone number, address and website at the end of your communications allows the recipient to quickly refresh themselves on who you are and some alternative means of contacting you if email isn’t sufficient. Leaving out that information would force them to Google you – which can be a pain.
46
Just as bothersome are email signatures that are unnecessarily long. While compliance disclosure text may be unavoidable for some industries, your email signature really shouldn’t be more than a few lines long. “inspirational” quotes, unnecessary text or photos become noise.
“FYI”
This is an awkward add-on in just about any situation because it does two things: assumes the recipient doesn’t already know the information (they might) and it leaves out the “why.” If you’re forwarding an email that provides some context you think is needed, state that why. An example might be if a coworker’s client is in an important news article, forward it with a line like, “In case you hadn’t seen this.” If you meant that the recipient might need to reference the included information later, state that.
“Just checking in…”
This might feel like a lighthearted, casual way of nudging someone about an email that hasn’t been responded to. But it’s important to consider what message that nudge sends; you’re taking up more of their attention and indirectly asking for your project to jump to the top of their to-do list. While some people may need those reminders – and it may make you feel better to be sure your original email was seen – there are better ways to go about it. Instead, set your expectations: “Hey! I’d love to get a status update on this by [date]. We need to have this project completed [by date, or for what reason].”

Exclamation Points!
The exclamation point is best used sparingly. When used judiciously, it can convey a friendly, playful tone or urgency; when used with abandon, it can accidentally make you seem unprofessional, immature or even angry. While there is no set rule for how many exclamation points are appropriate for email, I’ve heard some HR professionals recommend no more than once per paragraph, and no more than thrice per email. While that may feel a little rigid, it’s probably sound advice. Also note that you should never use more than one exclamation point in a row. “Come see me!!!!” reads very differently than, “Come see me!”
Grammarly asked: How many exclamation points are appropriate in work emails?
56%
of respondents said NONE AT ALL or ONE per email. 23% said “as many as necessary.”
“Please Advise”
This phrase is one that is contentious, but hear us out: you’re essentially saying “please respond to this email.” If you have to say that, there’s a bigger breakdown in communication at play. Instead of leaving what could be interpreted as passive-aggressive prompts, make your emails more concise, and put questions you want answered on separate lines, so anyone skimming the email will catch them right away.
CAPSLOCK
While you may want to emphasize part of your email, ALL CAPS text ain’t the way to go because it’s almost universally considered aggressive, angry and rude. Instead, bold OR highlight important text. If it’s incredibly important, place it on a line by itself so it can’t be missed – no need to change the font size, case or color.
Failing to Reread
The best thing you can do to be a good email communicator is to take a second to re-read your email before hitting send. This gives you time to check your tone, edit the text, check if you’ve forgotten any important points and double-check your attachments. •
More than HALF of respondents said they read their email drafts 2-4 times before hitting “send.”
34 out of
people report being worried about their meaning being misunderstood in workplace emails. HALF are concerned about their emails being too long. (source: grammarly.com)

What is a
Leader
?
What makes someone a true leader is intangible. The qualities that set someone apart – and encourage others to follow where they lead – are hard to define. There is no set template for strong leadership. Yet everyone knows a leader when they encounter one. Understanding leadership is an entire branch of study and thought. Through the ages, countless writers, researchers and experts have attempted to quantify the personality traits and behaviors that make leaders tick. Books, blogs, podcasts and shows explore this topic in-depth, yet many still struggle to get a firm grasp on leadership. It feels elusive, complex and maybe even just a bit magical. We're pondering this question in honor of this month's Leaders of Lexington feature. We’ve collected some of the best resources to help you better hone your own leadership skills and understand what it means to truly lead. by Amanda Harper

CARSON’S FOOD & DRINK leader in :
American Casual Dining
Bringing diners all that the Bluegrass has to offer under one roof, Carson’s Food & Drink has long been a favorite among one of the most discerning culinary centers in the country. “Lexingtonians have very high standards for their hospitality,” explained the Carson’s team. “Either the city embraces you and loves what you do and who you are, or you fail. Our success depends on our connection with our guests and those high standards are a challenge our employees take head on, and tackle every day with heads held high.” Carson’s is well known for tempting starters like its grilled brie, a mouth-watering steak selection and an infamous brunch menu. And its combination of fare, ambiance and style have earned it “best restaurant” accolades from numerous publications. But its team knows that the real secret to its success has been its service. “Carson’s is an employee-driven company,” the team said. “Service is the most important part of the restaurant industry. Anyone can have the best food but people who love what they do, love the food they serve and always strive to give guests the experience they pride themselves on is what makes a successful restaurant. And at Carson’s, we are lucky enough to have a staff of the best people in Lexington.”

But cultivating the best restaurant staff doesn’t happen by accident. It’s thanks to an internal and personalized process that Carson’s has a team it can count on to create the experience that guests remember. “Our training and hiring practices are very unique in our industry,” the team explained. “Like everything we do, our hiring process is totally dependent on our current employees. They help us hire who they work with. And this process has allowed us to build a one-of-a-kind team that works well in any situation and brings to the table a new standard of hospitality.” Although Carson’s has always understood that the secret to its success is an unparalleled team of employees, recent changes to the hospitality industry have only strengthened its conviction. “Post pandemic, what guests are searching for is that sense of being cared for,” the team said. “Knowing that the person serving you your meal cares as much about your experience as the owner does. Restaurants have always been an employee-driven industry, but the future of this industry is the people who take the guest experience to the next level.” 362 East Main Street, Lexington // 859-309-3039 // carsonsfoodanddrink.com

JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE leader in :
Fine Dining Experience In 1981, soon after opening his first restaurant, ‘The Precinct’, Jeff Ruby realized that guests didn’t patronize the place simply because they were hungry. Ruby explains, “They could’ve just gone to their refrigerators if they were hungry. They were coming to my place to celebrate life and I was going to give them a total culinary and entertainment experience unlike any other so they could do just that. Almost four decades later, we strive to do the exact same thing every night.” With the opening of Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in downtown, Lexingtonians are now relishing, “The Jeff Ruby Experience,” which Ruby describes as “a unique combination of elements like ambiance, culinary expertise, decor, music, hospitality, rhythm and flow, sense of arrival, service and so much more.” This experience has drawn national attention. According to their website, Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse has garnered awards such as OpenTable’s Top 100 Steakhouses in America; Travel + Leisure’s Top American Steakhouses; and USA Today’s Best American Steakhouses, among many others. Ruby credits the origin of his success to his high school football coach and mentor, Jeep Bednarik, who took an interest in him after Ruby fled from a troubled home and became selfsufficient at the age of 15. Ruby says, “He taught me the value of striving to become a better person, hard work and more. I wanted to make him proud. As a result of his mentorship, I went from failing grades to straig A’s. From not winning a wrestling match my sophmore year to not losing one my senior year. From riding the bench to All-State football honors and a scholarship to Cornell University. He is one of the single greatest influences I’ve had in my life.” Now, Ruby has moved into the mentor role and is passing his positive influence down through his employees to his guests. According to Ruby, “In the restaurant business, everything is important, but perhaps nothing more so than making our guets feel really important. The only way to make that happen is to make our employees our most important thing. If we offer them extraordinary opportunities, they make an emotional connection with the guests they serve. I would’ve never been successful if my employees didn’t want me to be.” Ruby also gives back through The Jeff Ruby Foundation, which aims to alleviate childhood poverty by first addressing challenges faced by the most vulnerable population in our community - those without parents as well as those in the current foster care system.

2ND CHANCE CLINIC leader in :
Addiction Treatment Addiction does not discriminate, and neither does 2nd Chance Clinic, where the team believes every individual deserves an opportunity to overcome addiction and move on to lead a productive life. According to CEO Tuyen Tran, MD, “All of our physicians and staff will truly support our patients on their journey to recovery. We will treat every patient with dignity and render no judgement. We will walk beside each of our patients on their journey.” Dr. Tran and Dr. Bishop, both board certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, founded the clinic in 2012. Dr. Tran states, “We initially began the clinic to treat patients with opioid addiction - prescription opioids such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, dilaudid, heroin and fentanyl. The opioid epidemic was claiming many Kentuckian lives prematurely and we wanted to participate in the solution.” Since its’ creation, 2nd Chance Clinic has expanded their outpatient services to cover all chemical types of addiction including alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines and marijuana, and opened a second location in Somerset last year. Their approach is comprehensive. Dr. Bishop explains, “2nd Chance is one of the few clinics that provides a full treatment regimen for patients who are affected by addiction in an outpatient setting. We provide the full spectrum of physician-led treatment, counseling and case management. We treat the patient as a whole-person.” Dr. Tran elaborates, “When a patient craves thier drug or is experiencing withdrawals, the priority in thier mind is the drug, how to get it and how to satisfy thier need. Once our physicians manage that craving medically, patients can focus on psychosocial therapy. In combination with intensive psychosocial therapy delivered by our master’s trained counselors, we hope to effect positive behavioral change.” Knowing that patients can never truly engage in recovery until thier fundamental needs are met, 2nd Chance case managers identify the social barriers, such as domestic violence, lack of transportation, food, shelter and legal threats, which may impede successful recovery and provide resources accordingly. Dr. Tran, who has witnessed the devastating effect of addiction in our state first-hand, says, “We started the clinic because we cared.”

Mommy makeover is Dr. Nimtz’ most requested procedure. Typically, women think of a mommy makeover as some type of breast and belly procedure done at the same time to save on cost and recovery time. This is certaintly true. He can, however, tailer the procedures to address what each woman needs, such as a breast lift and liposuction to the thigh. Some women may not need a full tummy tuck procedure but want a tighter abdomen and flank. With Renuvion we are able to perform liposuction and then permanently tighten the skin. In order to use their unwanted fat, a lot of women are opting to transfer far to the breast to fill up lost volume. If you desire something more restorative for mom or for yourself, Commonwealth Plastic Surgery has expanded to include SoL Retreat at Keene Trace in Nicholasville, and SoL Retreat at Hideaway Spa in Georgetown. Book a massage or schedule a facial. “We are continuing to grow, so we will be adding two more retail pharmacies this year – one to support the UK campus, and one to support a new clinic opening in South Lexington this fall. We are also adding durable medical equipment services,” said Grantz. When patients experience problems obtaining their medications, or need especially high-cost and complicated medications, known as “specialty” medications, the UK Specialty Pharmacy steps in to offer personalized, hands-on support. “We work with the patient’s care team to assure that the patient can have access to and afford their medications, then we do everything within our power to help them succeed on that therapy,” said Duckworth. The Specialty team is also recognized for its expertise in working with patients who have very serious illnesses, including rare illnesses known as “orphan disease states” for whom support and resources can be less available.

Body Contouring If you’ve been pondering the idea of having a CoolSculpting® procedure – trust the leading expert in the commonwealth, Amanda Harms, with over thousands of treatments performed over the last five years. The CoolSculpting technology is proven safe and effective in removing fatty tissue. However, in order to achieve the best results, you need to work with a skilled and experienced technician in CoolSculpting. Having an experienced CoolSculpting provider can make the difference between achieving a beautiful, non-surgical result versus seeing only slight changes. Amanda Harms is both co-founder and COO of CoolBluLex. Amanda’s vision was to offer men and women autonomy over their health by allowing them the opportunity to choose between noninvasive and surgical procedures to improve their appearance. She is extremely knowledgeable on educating patients as to what is possible with various treatment methods for self improvement. CoolBluLex uses an individually-tailored approach to help patients develop a positive body image. Each patient receives an in-depth consultation, followed by a customized plan, and then counseling on precisely what level of body transformation to expect. She combines her thorough knowledge of the body’s anatomy, and clinical training from board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen A. Schantz, to achieve exceptional outcomes for her patients. “Amanda’s artful work has secured her reputation as a provider who helps patients create meaningful changes both internally and externally,” says Dr. Schantz. “From the beginning, Amanda set herself apart in the world of noninvasive body contouring with her strong grounding in science and health care. It is her passion to deliver substantial improvements in a person’s body image without the necessity of having surgery. When someone has a consultation or treatment with Amanda, they feel relaxed and trust that she has their best outcomes in mind.” Amanda’s most recent accomplishment is her nomination for a CoolSculpting Faculty position with Allergan Medical Institute (AMI). AMI seeks out only the most knowledgeable CoolSculpting providers to add to their already dynamic Faculty team. The AMI provides world-class medical education, aiming to accelerate scientific knowledge and technical skills in the field of medical aesthetics. Amanda is excited for this additional role because of her dedication to promoting excellence in clinical practice and improving patient outcomes worldwide. CoolBluLex is proud to be the first and one of the few to offer Allergan’s latest technology, CoolSculpting® Elite, which has a number of improvements over CoolSculpting Legacy, including the following: improved applicators, enhanced fat removal, faster results in fewer treatments, and enhanced comfort. One of the biggest benefits of CoolSculpting Elite is that it can be as effective as liposuction without the pain and required downtime of surgery. Now, CoolSculpting Elite can also be combined with CoolTone® muscle enhancement treatments to stimulate muscle tone for a leaner look. As the demand for fat reduction and muscle definition increases so does the necessity for a place like CoolBluLex. Amanda Harms and Dr. Stephen Schantz continue to raise the standard of care for non-invasive fat reduction, challenging other CoolSculpting providers to become better educated on the different components of an ideal candidate and stay up to date on the latest technology to ensure all CoolSculpting patients achieve exceptional results. They invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation.

The business follows the care and not the other way around. Cataract and Refractive Surgery Since 1985, Abell Eyes Refractive Solutions has been dedicated to providing vision correction through the best technological options as well as eye care through patient advocacy to countless patients in the Lexington and wider Central Kentucky regions. Since its founding, doctors Thomas G. Abell and Michael S. Tanner have continued to set precedents in the world of eye care — Dr. Abell was one of the first care providers to offer Lasik laser eye surgery in the Lexington area. “First and foremost, we are the patients’ advocate, and must always have their best interests at heart,” the doctors said. “Treating everyone as you would your own family is the only way to provide the right level of care.” Abell Eyes is a relatively small practice, allowing its practitioners to offer individualized care, while still taking advantage of state-of-the-art technology. For instance, the practice offers cataract surgery with upgraded multi-focal lenses in its Lexington and Campbellsville locations, which can reduce or even eliminate dependency on glasses for many. “Looking into the future and staying up with the technology, as well as imagining all of the possibilities in the future of vision correction, are all definitely a part of Abell Eyes,” the team explained. “We are motivated by the life-changing transformations we provide to our patients.” Dr. Tanner considers his father to be his role model, and Dr. Abell cites Charles Casebeer, a refractive surgery innovator and educator. And this combination speaks to the essence of Abell Eyes — a boutique practice that is focused on its neighboring community, while incorporating the evolutions and latest techniques of its industry.

FRANKLIN ROOFING leader in :
Keeping You Warm, Safe and Dry After spending several years in the industrial and transportation industries, James Franklin decided it was time to turn his energies to providing the state with a superior roofing service. His focus became ensuring homes and businesses were protected from the elements, so families and business owners could, in turn, focus on what was important to them. Since, Franklin Roofing has established themselves as “Central Kentucky’s most dedicated residential and commercial roofing company.” According to Franklin, “The most important lesson we have learned in business is to work together, communicate, and strive to give each client the very best experience they can possibly have with our company.” Prior to opening the company, Franklin worked his way up as a salesman in the roofing industry, educating himself about the business, the best products, and how to most effectively serve clients. When the time came to establish his own company, Franklin went through extensive training seminars and numerous certifications, as well as continued on-the-job training so his customers can rest easy, knowing they have a properly installed roofing system that will last for years to come. He and his staff continue to participate in ongoing education with Owens Corning in the latest roofing techniques, installation, product knowledge, and awareness—all to better serve their clientele, who they consider family. Franklin Roofing also has specifically trained team members that specialize in commercial roof maintenance. Franklins states, “When you place a service request with Franklin Roofing Company you are getting a continuously trained, specialized, and uniformed Franklin Roofing employee who knows how to get the job done right.” Franklin Roofing specializes in the repair and replacement of roofing, gutters, and siding as well as emergency services when inclement weather or wild winds take their toll. BISHOP + CHASE BRAND MANAGEMENT leader in :
Economic Development Bishop And Chase Brand Management provides comprehensive marketing, fullservice advertising campaigns, business administration support, consulting services and additional strategic brand management services for private, non-profit and government entities. It’s built on the expertise of president and CEO Adrian D. Wallace, who previously served as a recruiter and an assistant state marketing director for the Kentucky Army National Guard. And, just as in that role, his work with Bishop And Chase has a loftier mission in mind. “The main mission of Bishop And Chase Brand Management is to create a revenue stream to fund the work of the Bishop And Chase Foundation, a non-profit engaged in youth development and juvenile justice,” Wallace explained. “This is a concept and core component of Christian community development philosophy, of which I am a practitioner.” To answer this higher calling, Wallace is determined to continue driving the success of the entity’s brand management arm. To do this, he’s constantly looking toward the future and focused on delivering the highest-possible value to clients. “The pandemic has slowed many businesses and industries, and many firms slash their budgets for branding, typically to their own detriment,” he explained. “I believe that if branding is to last and thrive, we have to do a better job of researching statistical data and return on investment, therefore validating the absolute necessity of the intentional work of building brands.”

How did you get in the industry? I have always worked in Customer Service and have found that I love working with people. I was once told by a former boss, he'd never seen a be er "Networker". I began my career in this industry as a Manager with an Auction Company and was later promoted to Regional Manager. Through that position, I found that so many clients reached out to me to help them handle small details that are essential for making a move. Organizing a move, discovery, packing, coordinating all the logistics, unpacking, decorating and staging, selling, etc. Most of my life I have been self-employed working as a Contractor and Designer so this need and demand seemed like a great fit for me.
What do you like most?
VISIT US AT THE 2022 BLUEGRASS ANTIQUE & GARDEN SHOW
I truly love helping people. Moving is always a "stressful task" for so many people, mainly because it’s hard to know where to sta . I offer a Free Consultation and meet with clients and families at their homes, estates or even storage facilities to assure them we'll make this overwhelming job into a "seamless transition". We pack, discover, oversee the move, unpack, decorate and even help them determine what they will need at their new home. We then take it one step fu her and help our clients decide what items should be donated or are wo h selling. Donations are key to helping others in need. We finish the job by totally emptying the house and coordinating shredding and donations so the home will be completely empty a er move day. I find that we do really well with seniors and families. Seniors make up a qua er of our business and we have moved some families 3 or 4 times, to me, there is no greater compliment.
What services do you offer?
What is “concierge moving” and how is it different from others? Moving concierge is actually the same thing as a Move Manager. Think of it like a concierge at a hotel, whatever you need, we can take care of it. Other moving companies do not pay a ention to the details we do or offer the same types of services. The first time I meet a client, I pay a ention to the chair they sit in, the lamp they turn on, which side of the bed they sleep on and learning the provenance of their favorite items. All small details that make a huge difference transitioning to a new home, whether upsizing, downsizing or moving into a retirement community. For example, family members may not want to take a table and I'll say, “Well Mr. Ted has been eating off that table for 40 years and I'm sure we can find a place to put it!” Also, other mover's may unpack, but they place the dishes on counters or tables, and leave open boxes. While it is indeed unpacking, it’s not nesting. Our goal on Move Day is to have their furniture in place, all beds made, a hung on the walls, and empty boxes and trash removed.
How does this tie into the Estate Sale portion of your business? I once had a sweet client "Mr. Lou" who we moved to Senior Living with his wife from a good sized house FULL of valuable pieces. Through our process he looked at me and said, “What am I going to do with all this "stuff" my wife has purchased?” My brain sta ed spinning, I said “We'll take care of everything.” If we can't sell at our shop, we outsource items and the client doesn't have to worry about anything. When I mention to new clients we can also sell "Items of Value" on my consultations they light up. My goal is to pay for their moving expenses by selling their items that no longer fit, families do not want or do not match their tastes. We move their items to our Estate Sale venue off-site, which is a plus because there are so many neighborhoods that do not allow sales or they are very private and they do not want anyone in their home. No worries, we solve this by moving to Bluegrass Estate Sale where we sell unique collectiables, all types of furniture, antiques, sterling, lamps, a , rugs and much much more. My biggest regret is that I didn’t sta selling SOONER!
Bluegrass Moving Concierge offers free consultations, interior design, floor planning, packing/unpacking, securing a mover (provide a bid), charity packing, oversee move day, se ling in services, donations/shredding, cleaning services, storage and trash removal. Our sister company, Bluegrass Estate Sale, takes care of selling your “items of value” by offering services such as: inventory, discovery, photography, pricing, pickup/delivery, and selling both in-store and marketing online through estatesales.net and selling Ebay. We even have an Ebay Specialist on staff! Of course, Bluegrass Moving Concierge & Estate Sale would not exist without my "incredible" crew of 12 Amazing woman, who treat each Client whether in the shop or onsite with kindness and a ention to every detail involved in making each job/item to sell "Special".
What tips do you have for families getting ready to move? Stay Calm! Sta immediately going through personal possessions, (i.e. documents, family photos, books, children's a work from 35 years ago), trust me NOBODY wants it! Donate, Donate, Donate! When we arrive, we pack items they need and our goal is to only touch items once. I would also advise them to make a schedule and set a goal to do one task a day (i.e. clean hall closet, clean out filing cabinet, so through coffee cups), you'd be surprised at how much be er you will feel accomplishing small tasks every day and then bring in the professionals and trust me, you will not be disappointed!

Millennials and Gen Z are leading the Great Resignation, leaving companies and careers they feel aren’t in society’s best interest or their own. Gen Z workers have a value-driven approach to their career, highly valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion, but also economic security, communication, and transparency. In fact, when it comes to their first job, 54% of Gen Z job seekers claim that pay is their number one priority, and are willing to work nights and weekends to receive a higher pay. Since wages for young workers have stayed somewhat stagnant since the early 2000s, many members of Gen Z say their biggest financial concern is student debt. Another concern that ranks high on the list is mental health. Unlike other generations, Gen Z want, and maybe even expect, PTO to care for their mental health. They also want mental health benefits, like therapy, and want employers to emphasize a better work life balance for employees.

BY ALLYSON MATTINGLY
The invasion of Generation Z into the workplace. Whether you’re ready or not, the day is finally here. Gen Z is defined as people born between 1997 and 2012, meaning the oldest members of this group are at the ripe age of 25. Just because these employees are young, doesn’t mean they are unmotivated, which is a popular opinion among older generations. But hey, who does like the generation immediately under them?
155
Since the start of COVID, people have assumed that young workers want to work remotely. Well, I’m here to tell you: totally untrue! Because of the pandemic, many Gen Zers have yet to step foot in an office, and are craving face-to-face interactions with colleagues. Many, such as myself, graduated during the pandemic and had to take some of their last courses in college online. While a small percentage of the generation would prefer to work remotely, most are excited to transition from full-time student to in-person professional. Although, the daily 9 to 5, 40-hour work week isn’t as appealing to Gen Z workers, who believe that productivity can be achieved without a rigid work schedule. Enabling employees to work from various locations allows not only young workers, but any worker, to grow both personally and professionally. Almost half of Gen Z say flexibility and adaptability are important characteristics when joining a company. It may sound like Gen Z has a lot of expectations for the workplace, but they are willing to put in the work. We don’t want to just work for you, but want to be coached by you, too. Learning and development are a top priority among Gen Z, with over half wanting direct, frequent communications and check-ins with their supervisors. Gen Z as a group are fairly competitive and want to be judged by merit, valuing skill development and self-improvement. No need to be a helicopter boss with this group, as they love working independently and will let you know when they are done with a project. Though independence is a trend with Gen Z, 40% want daily interactions with their boss and feel as if they did something wrong if they don’t get those interactions. Before you judge Gen Z too harshly in the workplace, remember that you too were once a young professional eager to learn and succeed. Success may look slightly different to us than it did to you, but asking for more from employers benefits not only us, but you, too! Embrace the change that Gen Z is bringing to the office, and you may find yourself in an even better work environment.

BEAUTY
WRITTEN BY ALLYSON MATTINGLY
Lash t s u L Achieving long, luxurious lashes is not easy, even when you’re using your favorite mascara. If you were born with lashes that make you say 'I look like I’m dying' when you don’t have any product on, then welcome to the club, doll! No need to worry, though, because there are plenty of ways to enhance what God gave you and create lashes that will make you say, 'Wow, I look good!' when you look in the mirror. Lash serums, falsies, and extensions are all options when trying to take your fringe to the next level. You may be asking yourself if these products actually work, but we’re here to tell you that they do! The women around the TOPS office all have our favorite ways to boost our lashes, and we want to let you in on our secrets.

Serums are great for increasing eyelash growth and thickness, but you’ll have to wait a while for full results. If you’re willing to wait, here are some products we recommend.
Latisse is the only FDA-approved serum, and it’s available with a prescription from your dermatologist. It requires daily applications along the lash line of the upper eyelid, and should be used for at least two months to see full results. If you use it daily, you’re sure to see your eyelashes grow and thicken. Although, once you stop using Latisse, your eyelashes will return to their original appearance. If you use any Rodan + Fields products, you know they may be a little pricey, but oh are they worth it. Lash Boost is a lash conditioning serum that, when applied nightly, will result in longer, stronger, darker lashes. It also helps maintain moisture, enhances lash durability, and protects against breakage. For best results, apply on the upper lash line and use it for eight weeks. It can even be used on your eyebrows! If you’re looking for a vegan option, LashFood is for you. LashFood is the world’s first and only Ecocert natural eyelash enhancer, and 99% of its ingredients come from a natural origin! This product nourishes lashes to look longer, thicker, and stronger with Phyto-Medic Complex. What the heck is that? Well, it delivers nutrients to your lashes directly at the follicle with natural ingredients. With LashFood, you can expect full results after 16 weeks.
Lancer's Lash Serum Intense is formulated with Biotin and Panthenol to help lashes look more lush, even in your early Saturday morning moments when you drank a little too much wine the night before. It also contains Pumpkin Seed Extract and high performance conditioning agents, both rich in essential fatty acids, to improve the look of thin or sparse lashes. If you buy directly from the Lancer website, you even get a twopiece gift with your purchase!

Another option for enhancing your lashes by yourself is at-home extensions. These take a little more time and effort than serums, but are great once you get the hang of applying them.
Lashify is an award-winning patented lash system designed to provide a damage-free experience, relieving your natural lashes from weight and tension. First timers begin with Level 1 to get used to placement and bonding, and once that’s mastered, you’ll move on to Level 2. You can either purchase Lashify’s Gossamer Lash Extensions individually, or you can invest in the Lashify Control Kit. The Control Kit includes multiple tools for perfect application and two pairs of Gossamer Lashes. Just need your lashes on for one night? You can remove them daily or wear them for up to 10 days!
KISS' Falscara Lash Extension Kit is similar to Lashify, give or take a few tools. You apply the Faslcara Wisps underneath your natural lashes, creating a more natural look than regular falsies. The Wisps are gentle, safe, and cause no damage to your lashes, so you can wear them for one day or ten days. You can even build upon them or stack them for a custom look that can be reworn up to three times.
La s h if y Co n tro l K it F a ux La s h e s
Professional eyelash extensions result in less work for you and KISS' Falscara Lash last longer than at-home extensions, about six to eight weeks. E x t en s i o n K i t Extensions are semi-permanent lashes that are hand-glued on top of your natural lashes by a lash pro. Unlike strip lashes, these are glued individually to your natural hairs, so they’re ultra customizable and look like real lashes. Once you have extensions, there’s no need to use mascara. It’s actually recommended to stay away from mascara, as it can cause your extensions to break and clump them together, making them harder to clean. Speaking of cleaning, these require quite a bit every day. Professionals recommend cleaning them with a spoolie brush when you wake up, after you shower, and before you go to sleep on your silk pillowcase. If you’re looking for long lasting, little-work-involved lashes, we recommend you try out professional eyelash extensions. Hourglass Aesthetics & Salon and Gatwick Beauté Collective are just two fantastic options in Lexington for this service. On the other hand, if you’re looking for natural growth and willing to wait, serums are a great choice to extend your lashes. At-home extensions are a nice middle ground as they don’t require daily care, but can be popped on at a moment’s notice.

Florals have always been an important element in planning a perfect wedding day. It seems the flowers are one of the details brides get most excited about. They have a way of being the ideal accessory to turn a miss into the perfect Bride. Plus, they can completely transform a space into a dreamy escape. Looking into 2022, pastels and soft hues are making a comeback in the floral world. While we love a good pop of color and bold palette, there’s just something about a bouquet with more muted and romantic undertones. If this trend is for you, take in some of our inspriation to get started!

REAL WEDDING
story by amanda harper photos by conrhod zonio
When Leslie and Brian met on the school bus 25 years ago, their first meeting wasn’t exactly the stuff love songs are written about. “Brian was a new face on the bus and I made an effort to be friendly to him,” Leslie explained. “He was listening to music on a Discman, and I asked what he was listening to. He replied very rudely, ‘You wouldn’t know it!’” Something clicked with the two Kentucky natives because they became great friends. They went to homecoming together and even skipped school to watch the horse races. While they never dated and went their separate ways for college, they always managed to spend time together when they were in town. When Leslie lost someone close to her and Brian was there for her, she was shocked to realize that the person she’d been looking for had been right in front of her the entire time. The two weathered insurmountable odds – including Brian being hospitalized and in a coma – to find their way to the altar. “I booked the Apiary sight unseen; I had walked by, peeked through the ornate iron gates back when I lived in Lexington, and I was intrigued… but I had never stepped foot inside!” She explained, “I wanted a venue that had a seamless indoor/ outdoor space, very private and, of course, stunning. We wanted incredible food, garden-like ambiance and perfect service. The Apiary delivered on that and more.” To enhance the already incredible space, the team created a lush, green atmosphere using tropical plants and pops of deep magenta. When she and Brian were dating, he gifted her beautiful orange roses, which signify friendship that has blossomed into love. Leslie chose to incorporate peachy-orange roses into their décor. Soft gold elements helped bring in the glamor. Simple black bridesmaids’ dresses, tablecloths and other little details allowed the deep emeralds and stunning pops of color to really shine.

The couple incorporated several personal touches. It was very important to the couple to show appreciation for everyone involved, so they skipped the traditional introductions of the wedding party and instead toasted everything and thanked them for joining in the celebration. While everyone was getting ready, Leslie took time out to prioritize her loved ones. She painted her mom’s toes and helped her dad with his vest and cufflinks. “It’s too special and others want to celebrate with you,” she said. “Don’t allow stress and anger to cloud the day or make them feel they are not important, too.” The bride chose to have a first-look moment with her father. He is something of a goofball, often putting in fake teeth to get a laugh. Leslie decided to use his own prank on him, putting in some horrible fake teeth. When her father came in, he was so overwhelmed with emotion that it took him several seconds to realize what was going on. As huge UK fans, they knew Kentucky basketball would play some role in their special day. The groom had Coach Cal do a Cameo video wishing them a happy marriage and giving Leslie a shoutout. When he announced that there was a special guest that “couldn’t make it” and hit play, Leslie’s squeal rang throughout the venue. “It was truly amazing, and I could have married him eight more times that same evening had I been allowed!” He wasn’t the only one with a sweet surprise; Leslie got the Star Wars fan an R2-D2 groom’s cake with a mustache to match his own. (She also made a declaration to his beautiful mustache in her vows.) “The entire evening was non-stop laughter. We were all so happy to be together,” she said. “I never imagined it would have gone that well. So much love!"

sell o t r e tt e "B an h t t n e p e r and " . t n e s e r d keep an John E. Madden was born in 1856 in Bethlehem, PA. Upon the death of his father, John had to find ways to help his family survive. By about 16, John developed an interest in horses. He was uncannily adept at recognizing the differences in gait and performance among Standardbreds. John began to buy unseasoned animals that he saw as promising at low prices, then selling them once he and his team had developed them to their full potential. “Better to sell and repent than keep and resent,” was his motto. When John moved to Lexington in 1889, he lived at the Phoenix Hotel while delving into the world of Thoroughbreds. He purchased a horse named Hamburg in 1896 for $1,200. He developed the colt into a winner and sold the horse to Marcus Daly for $40,001, which set a record for a two-year-old in training. The proceeds from the sale were used to purchase an initial 235 acres of land which he named Hamburg Place. The area eventually expanded to 2,000 acres and served as the heart of his breeding operations. There, John bred 14 champion racehorses including the first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton. John’s sons, Edward and Joseph, inherited Hamburg
Place upon his death in 1929. Their deaths by suicide left the farm to Edward’s sons, Patrick and Preston. Preston and his wife, Anita Myers, bred the 1987 Kentucky Derby winner Alysheba. Anita’s extravagant Derby Eve galas were the talk of the town for nearly 40 years. PVA records for Meadowcrest Mansion show that it was built between 1929 and 1931. The three-story NeoGeorgian house was designed by architect Robert Meekin for Joseph Madden. The total cost of the home was announced at $400,000 including “five master bedrooms, four servants’ rooms, living room, library, dining room, service rooms, gymnasium, tap room, seven bathrooms and five lavatories.” An eight-car garage was later added to the back of the home. The home had been unoccupied for some time, and was even the set for a horror film in 2017. The home’s last owner filed a demolition permit with the LexingtonFayette Urban County Government. Crews began tearing down the home in January. Cowgill said that the 86-acre plot could have a variety of uses where it sits along I-75 and US-60. Their website reads, “We are working our way through the necessary approvals and expect to break ground within a year.”

Bookcases
today aren’t just about storing our beloved reads; they also provide an intriguing design element to any room. The perfect storage essential for displaying our treasures and collectibles, a well constructed bookcase offers an opportunity to showcase our personality. There’s no shortage of bookcase styling ideas on Instagram and Pinterest—and for good reason. The bookshelf is the ultimate storage piece. Beyond books, you can decorate the shelves with art, sculptures, plants, and other storage vessels, which ultimately turn the shelves into stylish displays and focal points in the room. The eclectic arrangements recommended by designers doesn’t mean sloppy or random, so be sure to keep your bookcase design feeling balanced. A good start is to pick a theme or color palette that will help guide your approach to styling and ensure the results feel cohesive. Choose items of different heights and shapes and stagger them along your shelves.
Here are some key styling elements to keep in mind: -Start with the big things. Begin by adding large, solid objects, such as tall vessels and boxes, to “ground” your shelves.
-Layer in the small touches.
Cortney Bishop Design
Follow up with accessories, like framed art and decorative objects, so that each shelf tells a story and feels like a collection versus a random grouping of items.
-Get creative with books. Line your books up vertically as usual, then stack bigger ones horizontally in piles of twos and threes. This helps balance out the shapes of the other décor.
-Good rule of thumb: Threes! If you’re struggling with what objects to place where, try grouping things in threes (two small objects with one large item). It’s the easiest way to create a curated look. This is perfect for those who love a classic and elegant display that’s curated with all of their favorite books, art and mementos.

The Dos and Don'ts of 2022
Business Travel by Peter Chawaga
TOPSinLex.com | March 2022
205
The lifting of U.S. travel restrictions and ongoing need to conduct business in person has already seen travel bookings return to 70% of levels from before the pandemic, according to industry trend data. But even with the return of business travel trending up, many of those who are planning trips to conferences, retreats or meetings will have lingering questions about how to make the most of their engagements. To help, consider the below dos and don’ts before heading out on your next business trip.
experience public transportation. I like to carry those best practices over to ride shares as well. Rather than hailing cabs or renting a car, many of us now rely on ride sharing apps like Lyft and Uber to get to our hotels, dinners and other business trip appointments. These ride shares also typically institute relatively strict sanitary practices, like requiring drivers and riders to wear masks. They also give you the chance to impress prospective clients with black car options.
Do Your Research
Dress the Part No proper business trip advice could skip over attire, and there are some fundamental business travel fashion standards that have survived the pandemic: Dress for the job you want, not the job you have; better to be overdressed at a business engagement than to misjudge the right time to wear cargo shorts; airport shoes should be functional and fashionable. You only get one chance at a first impression and, for better or worse, your appearance will help shape it. But the pandemic has also introduced some new best practices. While rules around mask wearing vary widely depending on state, as of this writing masks are required on all domestic flights. Think of your business travel as the chance to sport something else than the same cloth covering or generic disposable. For instance, the Henry Mask complies with CDC guidelines and offers a unique and understated form with simple color choices or funky design options. You might also consider a leather attaché or overnight bag for your hand sanitizer, mask backups or other sanitizing equipment.
Give Germs Their Termination Notice With the style basics out of the way, many reading this article are probably wondering what germ-avoidance health safety tips are recommended. The CDC offers a range of traveling recommendations for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and, as of this writing, the TSA mandates mask wearing on planes, trains and buses. In this writer’s view, the growing use of hand sanitizers and wipes has been a great evolution in how closely we
Depending on the tempo of your specific business appointment, having some detailed knowledge of the best power lunch spot or karaoke bar in the area might come in handy. You may also be curious to check out your accommodations and their latest policies in advance. If you’re traveling internationally, it’s also important to ensure that you understand the latest tourism or visa requirements of your destination country. Using Google Maps can help you plot out specific routes for your journey and get a preview of the local restaurants and hotels. Pinterest can provide some visual inspiration for the moods and vibes of your destination city, helping persuade you with some climate-appropriate attire.
Pack Like A Pro With your research on the settings and tenors of your upcoming appointments complete, you’ll want to make sure you’ve packed the perfect attire and accessories for any likely scenario. Pro tip: If you’re flying, make sure you take your most important business outfit as a carry on in a sturdy garment bag. There’s nothing worse than an airline losing track of your checked luggage with all of your essentials inside. For those inclined to wear makeup or other products, consider snagging some sample-sized versions of your favorites ahead of time. These can generally be found wherever you purchase your cosmetics and are much easier to travel with.
Cybersecurity Is Essential Threats to cybersecurity are increasing across the business sector, and they come into particular focus when one is traveling.
Business trips account for about 13.6% of total US air travel and they make up nearly 75% of airlines’ profits. 206
March 2022 | TOPS in Lexington
“Many travel managers already recognize the importance of cybersecurity … But they also need to protect their company and travelers from active cyberthreats,” according to Travel Daily. “The first step is to recognize cybersecurity as a daily risk to travel and take responsibility for tackling it. Prevention, or minimizing the impact, will pay dividends over simply responding to cyber incidents after the damage has been done.” The experts at digital security firm Norton recommend that business travelers engage security locks on smartphones, laptops and tablets; remain cautious and skeptical of joining public Wi-Fi networks; disable devices’ “auto-connect” Wi-Fi settings; minimize device location sharing; update their operating systems and passwords; disable Bluetooth connectivity; and be sure to have anti-virus software installed on all critical hardware.
35%
of US businesses make business travel a part of their work regularly.
Keep Track Of Your Spending It’s likely that your company or firm has its own best practices for recording business travel expenses. But there are also numerous tools that can help you more easily track paper and digital receipts as you go, and to organize these charges for yourself before submitting them for reimbursement. Apps like TrabeePocket, Trail Wallet, Concur and Expensify are all designed to document expenses and make it easy to submit them for reimbursement. Spreadsheets and note apps can help keep running logs as well. And rideshare apps offer the option to export all of your trips in a given timeframe at once.
Consider Traveling More Sustainably Your business travel arrangements might be largely dictated by your company’s larger culture or the cost/ benefit analysis done by a supervisor. But as much as you are able, 2022 would be a great time to start thinking about the environmental impact that your business travel has, and not just for the potential benefits to the planet. The ways in which we choose to conduct business travel can affect how clients and customers see us, and traveling sustainably is becoming a real part of one’s professional image. “Now more than ever, the issue of sustainable travel can impact a company’s image,” according to international law firm CMS. “It is essential for the company to distance itself from a status-oriented way of thinking. In order to reduce emissions, companies should reconsider every business trip.” Consider replacing short-haul flights with available rail options, renting a hybrid or electric-powered vehicle for your business trip, staying in accommodations that go to extra lengths to reduce their footprints or otherwise traveling in conscientious ways.•

Meal Planning & Prep "What's for dinner?"
It’s a question that is universally dreaded. For people with busy schedules, it can be the rotten cherry on top of a stressful day. While deciding the menu can be difficult enough on its own, making dinner happen also requires shopping, unpacking, prepping, cooking and cleaning up afterwards. Sometimes, it’s enough to make anyone throw in the towel!
planning, you should start building your first week’s menu. Remember, the goal is to have a plan to eat well without losing your cool. It’s tempting to make grand plans for huge, intricate meals, but you should aim for nutritious and easy. Many families find it helpful to post the menu in a visible area of the home. Some invite vetoes while others adopt a “don’t like it? There’s peanut butter in the cabinet,” rule.
More and more people are turning to weekly meal planning – and even prepping – habits to help them save time and headaches at dinnertime. By setting a menu at the start of the week, they’re finding their groove and learning to love mealtimes again. If you think this might be right for you, get these tips.
Another pro meal planning tip? Don’t hesitate to build in a “lazy” night or two! If you enjoy dining out, you should absolutely plan to do so. If you want to make Fridays a “fend for yourself” night, go for it! Having some flexibility and grace built in will keep you from feeling guilty on nights when you’re totally exhausted.
Do some research
Arranging versus making
The first step on your meal planning journey should be learning from the pros. There are tons of TikTok, Instagram and Facebook accounts dedicated to meal prep and planning, as well as countless blogs. They can offer you invaluable insights into the process, including tips for making it as easy as possible.
Some people get hung on up on making complete, cooked dishes versus having a delicious, nutritious meal. One of the most glorious life hacks you can learn is that there’s nothing wrong with arranging your ingredients on the plate and calling that dinner. Think of it like a fancyschmancy restaurant! Raw vegetables artfully arranged is just a “deconstructed” salad. A side of sliced peaches is a pop of flavor, not a shortcut to getting fruit into your diet. Spread couscous under anything and it’s suddenly gourmet!
For instance, longtime meal planners recommend buying a rotisserie chicken to start the week off. While that definitely guarantees your first meal is handled, plain chicken is the Swiss army knife of meal prep: it can transform into soup, enchiladas, salads and sandwiches in a snap. Utilizing ingredients that can be cooked once and reused in the next meal is a tried-and-true method for success. Also remember that you can always make a double portion of an ingredient like rice and save the leftovers for use on the next night. Many meal planning blogs have sample menus for the week that make use of this method.
Start a binder The best way to keep track of your meal planning adventure is a notebook or three-ring binder. This will allow you to save menus, make notes and keep track of your progress along this journey. If you’re digitally-inclined, a Google Sheets spreadsheet might be a useful tool. This will allow you to add collaborators if you share the meal planning or purchasing responsibilities with someone else.
Make a menu When you’ve got a good foundation of knowledge on meal
Get shopping There’s nothing worse than rolling up your sleeves to make dinner and finding out you’re missing an ingredient at the last second. Since your menu is set, you can proactively shop for ingredients to ensure this doesn’t happen to you! Go through the menu and break down the ingredients you will need. Check your pantry for each item. If you’re not sure if you have it, go ahead and buy extra. If you get home from the grocery store and find you’ve forgotten an important ingredient, either commit to getting to the store before the day in question, or find a workaround. If you have to take the dish off the menu entirely, find a replacement recipe that utilizes the ingredients you do have.
Many hands If you live with family, friends or a partner, enlist their help. Whether you have them prep, put groceries away, do the shopping or even plan the whole menu, many

hands always make for light work. It also gives your crew a sense of ownership and responsibility for meal planning in your household.
Meal prep? If you really want to make weeknight eating easy, meal prepping may be your answer. The concept is to prepare and freeze meals so that dinner only needs reheating. This process requires you to cook large quantities of food in one go – which can be exhausting – but it saves time and energy through the rest of the week. The key with meal prep is choosing dishes which either keep well in the fridge or freeze and reheat well. Again, research will be your best friend here: look to blogs and social media accounts of seasoned meal prep pros. Even if making the whole week’s worth of meals – or month’s worth, for that matter! – all in one go isn’t something you can commit to, we can hardly blame you! However, it’s worth thinking about what you can do to make ingredient prep as simple as possible. If you’ll be using carrots in tonight’s meal as well as tomorrow’s, chop extra and reserve the excess. Every little bit helps!
Tweak At the end of each week, evaluate what went well and what was a struggle. Record your thoughts in your binder. If a recipe was an unexpected home run, save it for future use. If you struggled with a cooking technique in your preferred time frame, make a note of it. As you plan your next week’s menu, think about how you can iron out some of the wrinkles to make dinner a success every night!

As Kentucky was starting to overpower teams, climbing in the national ranking and being mentioned as a Final Four contender by almost every national college basketball analyst and writer, point guard Sahvir Wheeler was not buying into that thinking. "That is a big picture kind of question. Obviously, we have big picture goals, but I look at how we can get better day to day," said Wheeler. "Take it step by step, and you're going to get better naturally." Kentucky has steadily improved all season since losing at Notre Dame in early December. The Cats have a mixture of star power and depth that mixes together nicely. "What's lost about this Kentucky basketball team is how unselfish this team is and how everyone plays to their strengths. And not only can they defend, they have defensive versatility," ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg said. "They are the real deal. It's hard to find a weakness in this Kentucky team," ESPN analyst Jimmy Dykes said. "They can win in so many ways. All the pieces are there for a deep run. When Cal has five or six guys averaging in double figures … the last time they did that, they cut down the nets [in 2012]. "It's hard to deny that this looks like the most complete Kentucky team since 2015, and probably its most realistic title contender since then as well," Fox Sports radio host Aaron Torres said. Kentucky has had six players score 20 or more points in a game and – for most of the season – has had six players averaging nine or more points per game. Kentucky coach John Calipari always talks about playing for March and peaking at the right time. Kentucky has had to deal with a number of injuries/illnesses that forced players (TyTy Washington, Sahvir Wheeler, Jacob Toppin, Keion Brooks, Davion Mintz) to miss games. The Cats have played most of their high profile games at neutral sites or on the road yet still had significant wins over traditional rivals Kansas (18 points), Florida (21), Tennessee (28) and North Carolina (29).
Calipari also likes that UK has seen so many different looks – defensively and offensively – and also had to play some "roughhouse" games. What the coach likes even more, though, is having Oscar Tshiebwe on his team. He's going to join Anthony Davis and Julius Randle as one of the only players in the Calipari era to average double-figure rebounds per game. "He runs the floor like a tank: a very fast tank. He is incredibly athletic and strong. You can't move him, and wherever he's at, he ain't moving," Mississippi State coach Ben Howland said about Tshiebwe. "Oscar controls the heartbeat of Kentucky, and every Kentucky kid will tell you the same thing," Dykes said. However, the X-factor for UK could be Wheeler, the lightning-fast point guard who leads the SEC in assists but struggles at times to make shots. "They've had really good guards [in the past], but Sahvir is different from a speed standpoint," Self said. "Sahvir is the best 94-foot player in the country, hands down." "Sahvir Wheeler sees the floor as well as any guard in the country," Greenberg said. Kentucky fans were eager to forget last season's 9-16 debacle and have totally embraced this team. Tshiebwe might be the most beloved UK player in 30 or more years, but the fans have loved just about everything about this team. "I can only speak to what I have witnessed, but it seems like the fans have been ecstatic. They are excited about the brand of basketball we play," guard Kellan Grady, a transfer from Davidson, said. "I think they appreciate the character of this team. We have high-level character, and our sole purpose is winning." Kentucky has versatility, balance, character and great chemistry, which could make for the perfect winning formula in March for the Cats for the first time since 2012.

"W
orking together as a mother and daughter team is not without its challenges, but luckily they are few and far between," said Allison May Horseman. She and her mother, Mary May, jointly own and operate Woodstock Lavender Co., a farm and enterprise near Somerset in Pulaski County. "We call ourselves the 'Keepers of the Lavender'," she said. "I am what you might call the 'visionary,' but it's Mom who keeps the entire company balanced." As third and fourth-generation farmers, Allison and her mother grow 14 varieties of lavender on several acres of the family's farm and, as a team, have developed a successful agro-business that now includes a large lavender product line. During the summer months, there are opportunities for farm visitors to enjoy social events such as their popular teas, to take tours, to learn from instructional

demonstrations and classes in such things as wreath making, floral design, lavender wand making, and cooking with lavender, as well as special "you-pick" days when, for a small charge, guests can cut their own bundle of lavender. Allison's grandfather originally started the farm around 1928 with about 100 acres, adding to it as he saved by working during the Great Depression in Detroit, until it became the 300-acre farm it is today. Much of the land is now leased for row crops such as corn and soybeans, but a small portion has been reserved for the lavender fields. "When we started this adventure back in 2013, we had no plan," said Allison. "Mom saw the idea for growing lavender in the Farm Credit Cookbook." Initially they thought they'd grow enough lavender to make a few products that they could take to a farmer's market or even just enjoy for themselves. After doing a little research - Allison readily now

admits not enough – she and her mom decided to start with 50 lavender plants. Little did they realize at the time that Kentucky is not a recommended area for growing lavender. "In fact, it's not ideal at all!" Allison added, "Our soil is too fertile, our rainfall is too much, our humidity is too high, and Kentucky winters can be catastrophic." Over the years, they have learned and amended the way they grow to combat these conditions, but, like everything, these lessons have been learned the hard way. "We've lost plants to disease caused by too much rain, which is our main challenge," said Allison. But fortunately, they've made it through with only minor losses. They share these experiences by participating with three different universities in research programs so that future growers can learn and benefit from their gained knowledge. Allison considers working together as a team with her mom to be the "biggest blessing" and an opportunity that has allowed them to grow closer as well as develop an appreciation for each other beyond the normal mother/daughter relationship and roles. From time to time, the husbands are roped in to help - mostly during the busy season with car parking assignments and doing some "tractor work." Allison's three young children also help out in the summer by serving lavender lemonade and lavender cookies to visitors, and her sister is involved as the company CPA. But otherwise, apart from this sporadic family help, it has been Allison and her mom doing all the work. Although not traditionally considered a career for women, Allison and her mom are proud to be female farmers. "We believe there is and has always been a place for women in agriculture. In the past, women may have had more of a supportive role, but there is no doubt that traditional male farmers couldn't do what they needed to do on the farm without the support of their female counterparts," said Allison.
"We believe there is and has always been a place for women in agriculture."
The lavender growing season is short in Kentucky, so Woodstock Lavender Farm is only open to the public from around Memorial Day weekend to the end of June, and then only a few days a week. They pick and use their own buds in their products and so harvest their crop at peak time, which means all the lavender is usually out of the fields by July. "But using our buds is an integral part of our business and allows us to provide quality products that we are proud to sell to our customers," Allison said. • To see and shop Woodstock Lavender Farm's products, visit: woodstocklavender.com

To
get a glimpse into the mind and mission of Whit Whitaker, you need only read his email signature, which states “in humble service.” It only follows that his favorite quote, from Muhammad Ali, would be, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Whitaker is currently serving as the executive director of The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, where he acts as a steward of the organization and a champion for its cause: “to preserve, promote, present, and celebrate diverse cultures through artistic presentations of the highest quality, educational programming and outreach, film, and opportunities for community inclusion.” Of his position, he said, “It aligns with my deep passion for being a good and earnest servant of people and to my community in order to uplift and create change, which also connects to my undying passion for the arts, activism, and helping to create a healthier lifestyle through fitness.” Aside from his role with the Lyric, Whitaker is known for his theatrical roles in a multitude of productions, such as Othello (Othello), Isaac Murphy (The Isaac Murphy Story), and King Mongkut of Siam (The King and I). He is also recognized for his amazing tenor voice. Whitaker has performed across the globe as well as locally with groups such as the Lexington Singers, American Spiritual Ensemble, Kentucky Opera, and Kentucky Bach Choir. Whitaker holds a BA in Music, Voice, and Opera and an MA Arts Administration, both from the University of Kentucky. To share his enthusiasm for fitness, Whitaker, a cancer survivor, is a fitness instructor and personal trainer with YMCA of Lexington imparting the importance of exercise and a healthy diet. Whitaker also serves as president of the Lexington-Fayette NAACP and as co-chairperson of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington Commission for Racial Reconciliation in addition to volunteering within the community. On the advice he would give to his younger self (and other youth), Whitaker offered: “Be brave, bold, confident, and compassionate. Never be afraid to cry. Learn to embrace humble confidence because it's not vainness. Never allow vanity and the belief that the world revolves around you to infect your consciousness. And never let self-doubt be your herald; regret should never be the ‘scarlet letter’ resulting from never having tried and later wondering, ‘What if?’” •
