WHO’S WHO? VICE MAYOR
STEVE
KAY
by Kathie Stamps | photos by Keni Parks There are Kentuckians by birth and those by choice. Vice Mayor Steve Kay chose Lexington, Kentucky, as his home in 1971. “What I love about Lexington is that it is its own place,” he said. “We have this unusual combination of urban and rural.” He is a fan of both the beautiful countryside and the vibrant city core. He lives downtown, a 10-minute walk from City Hall and a 15-minute walk to the YMCA, where he plays racquetball several days a week. Born and raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Kay went to Bowdoin College in Maine to major in philosophy. Thinking he would be a college professor, he got his master’s degree at Yale University in Connecticut. He worked in the admissions office at Yale, where his job was to help them recruit students from all over the south. In the late ‘60s, he traveled to Kentucky and other southward states, and within a couple of years, he packed up and moved to the Bluegrass. “I put everything I owned in my car and just came to Lexington to see how it would be,” he said. Kay pursued his doctoral degree in the College of Education at UK in the 1970s and took a job at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, researching community engagement in education. By 1983 he had formed a business partnership with Rona Roberts called Roberts and Kay, a consultancy for nonprofits and other organizations in the area of community engagement and organizational development. In 1985 they formed a marital partnership as well.

COMMUNITY
Who’s Who
A quick civics lesson about Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government: LFUCG is a city-county merged government with a nonpartisan mayor and council. The mayor is head of the administration. The city council comprises 15 members: 12 representing the 12 council districts plus 3 at-large councilmembers. At election time, the at-large council member with the most votes becomes the vice mayor. The 12 district councilmembers serve two-year terms. The at-large members and the mayor serve for four years. Everyone is limited to serving 12 years at a time in a single position.
Kay ran for an at-large council seat in 2002 and 2006 but wasn’t elected. In 2010 he ran again and won an at-large council position. In 2014 and 2018, he was the top vote-getter, making him the vice mayor. He’s most proud of the work he’s done for the homeless and in affordable housing. In 2012 then-Mayor Jim Gray asked Steve Kay to chair the new Commission on Homelessness. Two years later, the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention was established as part of Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, as was the Office of Affordable Housing. Mayor Linda Gorton served as Lexington’s vice mayor after the 2010 election. “She knows and understands the working of the city,” Kay said. “She’s very experienced and we have a very good working relationship.” Another initiative he worked hard on was establishing a local food coordinator in the mayor’s office. Since the pilot program in 2014 was made permanent, Ashton Wright’s title has since changed to Director of Local Food & Agricultural Development. “That office has been very effective in advancing the local farm economy,” Kay said. He likes to eat out and support the local food economy, especially restaurants that focus on local food. “My wife has a blog called Savoring Kentucky that promotes local farms and local food,” he said. “She was a key reason why I got interested in the
36
local food economy.” Rona Roberts is also the author of the book “Classic Kentucky Meals.” The couple enjoys going to local plays, watching movies at the Kentucky Theater and attending concerts at UK, especially the UK Symphony Orchestra. Kay is a reader and is always in and out of the Central Library downtown. “We have a great library system,” he said. He is also a member of a book club that meets once a month. In 2018 the vice mayor created a task force on neighborhoods in transition. “I think the biggest challenge facing our community is the question of how we continue to be a diverse community as we grow,” he said. “How do we accommodate the growth without negatively impacting the quality of life that so many of us value and enjoy?” It’s quite a complicated situation. “I’ve been very active and an advocate for the purchase of development rights and for maintaining the urban service boundary,” he said, citing the farm community as one of the economic drivers of the community. And he knows that tradeoffs are part of the equation as the city grows. “Part of what helps Lexington continue to prosper is diversification,” he said. Industries, individuals, ideas and interests, variety is the spice of life in Lexington. •

BUILD INCLUSION by Lauren Rogers | photos courtesy of Build Inclusion Disability does not discriminate. It knows no boundaries of affluence, gender, age, ethnicity or race. More than 85% of our worldwide population will either experience disability or care for someone with a disability in their lifetime. While there has been much work done in the past, one organization actively advocating for greater inclusion and visibility of the disability community today is Build Inclusion, Inc., a Lexington non-profit that became a federally registered 501(c)(3) in March 2015. Annette Jett, MBA and the Executive Director of Build Inclusion shares, "When my husband and I had our first child who was born with developmental disabilities in 2005, it opened us up to a whole new world. Her younger brother was born just 20 months later. It took a while, but I realized I knew little about parenting and even less about resources for disability. I was
lucky to be able to pursue a Graduate Certificate at the Human Development Institute at the University of Kentucky while my husband supported our family. It was there that I was catapulted into a group of like-minded people and mentors who guided me to become the advocate that I am today." As one of the only four agencies in Kentucky to have received a state grant to offer customized employment to the people they serve, Build Inclusion staff pursues training and certification in best practices in disability employment through internationallyacclaimed Marc Gold and Associates. Annette says, "We believe it's about human rights: disabled people deserve to live as independent a life as they desire. That's why we say, 'Exclusion isn't always intentional, but inclusion must be.' We look forward to continuing our work in Supported Employment and facilitating relationships between job seekers

"Exclusion isn't always intentional, but inclusion must be." with disabilities and business leaders, which often requires job customization. In addition, we will continue to offer a curriculum that concentrates on communication and other soft-skills, self-advocacy and job exploration to high school students and young adults who are preparing to enter the workforce." Here she expresses how far Build Inclusion, Inc. has come since its inception four years ago and where they are headed next.
TOPS: What are your goals for the coming year? ANNETE JETT: While we started out primarily in community education, our concentration is now in helping young adults find competitive, integrated jobs. Employment gives people so much more than just money; it’s about making friendships, increasing self-esteem, finding purpose and contributing to our communities.
TOPS: What does the organization mean to you? AJ: As a provider, I’ve seen multitudes of lives changed through employment and community engagement. As a mom, it means everything to me to know that my daughter has a lifetime of
opportunity ahead and that Build Inclusion has had a part in paving that way. This was always personal for me however I knew if it could benefit my daughter, it could benefit others and their families too.
TOPS: What has it been like to watch your vision come to fruition in Lexington? AJ: Lexington is my hometown. Both my husband and I moved away for many years, only to return in the early 2000’s to raise our family. In addition to the many local resources and amazing people that support Build Inclusion’s efforts in our city, I am proud of the progressive diversity and inclusion initiatives in Lexington.
TOPS: Do you have a favorite moment that resonates with you and captures your mission? AJ: My favorite moments always lie in watching people get jobs that they love and then watching them grow in confidence, expectations and relationships. The sky’s the limit given the proper accommodations and resources. •
Get Involved: From participating in their Annual Inclusion Palooza to considering hiring one of the skilled job seekers they serve, there are a plethora of ways to get involved with Build Inclusion, Inc. Please contact info@buildinclusion.com or 859.286.9713 or visit buildinclusion.org for more information. If you know a high school student or young adult who has faced barriers to employment, education or community inclusion, please reach out.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to give back to your community! There are so many causes in Lexington that need your help this holiday season. Here are five simple ways you and your family can spread the holiday spirit!
1 3

The most in-need items include small Lego kits, art supplies, card and board games, Play-doh and toddler toys (no stuffed animals). Contact the Child Life Department: KCHChildlife@uky.edu.
2
Help others stay warm by donating to a coat drive. The A Coat To Keep The Cold Away Youth Coat Drive is accepting donations of new coats at the Plantory until December 15. Contact Devine Carama: believinginforever@gmail.com. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Diana Ross Winter Care Coat Drive is accepting donations of new or previously worn coats until December 31 at the following Lexington locations: Republic Bank branches, Chase Dry Cleaners, Bluegrass Cleaners or the Office of the Fayette County Sheriff. 5
Provide a hot meal for Lexington’s homeless and low-income neighbors at Lighthouse Ministries. Individuals (at least 12 years old) or groups can sponsor or cook and serve lunch and/or dinner, Monday – Saturday. Contact Allison Barnett: Allison@lighthouselex.org.
Don’t know what to get the person who has everything? Check out the BGCF’s selection of Giving Cards at bgcfgivingcards.org. Giving Cards are like retail gift cards, except they can be redeemed for the benefit of any public charity in the United States. They have several holiday designs to choose from, or you can create your own! Giving Cards are a wonderful way to introduce kids to the idea of giving back – they make great stocking-stuffers or Hanukkah gifts. Lauren would love to help you customize a holiday Giving Card! Breaking the Bronze Ceiling
Inspirational Women:
MADELINE MCDOWELL
BRECKINRIDGE Suffragist & Reformer story by Randolph Hollingsworth, PhD, of the Kentucky Woman Suffrage Project • kentuckywomansuffrageproject.org
Madeline McDowell Breckinridge (1872-1920) was a national suffrage leader and a reformer in the Bluegrass area. She descended from the venerable politician Henry Clay – a great grandfather – through her mother’s side, a heritage that she often relied on to lend her credibility in her own political agenda. She grew up at the Henry Clay estate outside Lexington and married into one of the oldest Kentucky families when she wed Desha Breckinridge. They became a powerful political duo, using the Lexington Herald as a mouthpiece for their progressive ideologies.
GET INVOLVED: Support Breaking the Bronze Ceiling in erecting a statue in downtown Lexington to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote. Visit breakingthebronzeceiling.com to donate and be a part of this important movement!
Historian Melba Porter Hay described Breckinridge’s careful, moderate and successful climb in her roles in women’s groups and ever-growing presence in the political arena of Kentucky and the nation. Calling out the feebleness of an all-male government, Breckinridge took action in education reform, health issues and the legal status of women. She was president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association (KERA) in 1912, and under her leadership the membership rolls expanded ten-fold. As a vice-president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) from 1913-1915 she led rallies all across the nation. She battled political party machines in Kentucky, using both her pen and oratory for women’s rights. Childless, and wounded by an affair between a friend and her husband, she acclaimed women’s unique experiences as mothers and wives as necessary for the betterment of society. She never broke with any of those who had betrayed her, including Laura Clay who had given up her membership in KERA to pursue votes for women via the Southern States Woman Suffrage Conference and in defiance of the NAWSA’s insistence on focusing on a federal amendment. She took up the presidency of KERA again to lead its final win when the new governor Edwin P. Morrow signed into law Kentucky’s ratification of the “Susan B. Anthony” amendment in 1920. That fall, she voted in the presidential election. Even as Breckinridge worked to create new treatment centers for tuberculosis, she suffered from the terrible disease herself. Soon after a terrible stroke in her home on Linden Walk, she died on November 25, 1920. • Image of Madeline Mcdowell Breckinridge circa 1900 from Wikimedia – originally from the Mary Elliott Flanery Photographic Collection, housed at the University of Kentucky.

new & Josh Hopkins brings his latest movie to Lex Lexingtonian Josh Hopkins is lighting up the silver screen again in a film produced by Alec Baldwin and written and directed by Joe Souza. The movie, Crown Vic, follows two LAPD police officers on a night in the city. A seasoned, cynical veteran officer shows a rookie cop the ropes. Along the way, they keep encountering Hopkins’s character, an Afghanistan combat veteran who is a loose cannon of the police force. With new cases – and new threats – around every turn, this indie drama is thrilling and suspenseful. Hopkins stars alongside Luke Kleintank, David Krumholtz, Bridget Moynahan and Thomas Jane. Released on November 15 nationwide, a special premiere was held at the Kentucky Theatre on November 19th with Hopkins and costar Greg Bello in attendance. The “One Night Only” screening featured a Q&A with the actors. Coach Cal and Rex Chapman tweeted about the event to invite the BBN to come out and support a fellow Kentuckian. Crown Vic can be seen in select theatres across the country.

The long-time pair will host “The Lee and Hayley Show” which will air weekdays on WTVQ ABC 36. The show will debut on Monday, February 17. “The Lee and Hayley Show” will reunite Kentucky’s two most popular and wellknown TV personalities who previously hosted “Live with Lee & Hayley” on Lexington’s NBC affiliate. After taking some time off this past summer, Cruse and Harmon decided to create their own production company, Lee & Hayley, LLC, thus giving them creative freedom for this and potential future shows. “Lee and I are thrilled to be staying in the Bluegrass with our new program,” said co-host Harmon. “We’re going to be back on the air doing what we love for the fans we adore.” The show promises to deliver on high caliber viewing satisfaction with celebrity and musical guests, touring comedians, current event features, comic sketches, and human-interest stories. Viewers will be reunited with Lee and Hayley’s high energy delivery, captivating on-screen chemistry and authentic southern charm. Chris Aldridge, general manager at WTVQ, was elated to be able to facilitate a new home for the small screen power-duo. “We’re delighted to welcome Lee and Hayley into the ABC 36 family,” he said. “Bringing their tremendous talent and immense viewer-appeal to our station is going to be a game-changer in this market,” he added. “Hayley and I felt it was imperative to partner with a talented team of professionals we trust and have our best interest at heart,” Cruse said. “Additionally, we are grateful to Chris, his ownership and his team for making this opportunity possible.” In addition to co-hosting “The Lee and Hayley Show,” Cruse will bring his distinctive brand of reporting and storytelling to various ABC36 newscasts and special features. A coffee-themed coffee table book to support a great cause CASA of Lexington volunteer Kyle Eberst created something that supports both a cause he is passionate about and the local coffee house scene. Coffee Shops of Lexington is a vibrant, informative guide to an important piece of our city’s food scene. To create the book, Eberst interviewed the founders and owners of local coffee shops. Photographer Keeler Pansing captured the details that make each location uniquely Lexington. A portion of the proceeds from each book sale go to support CASA of Lexington. CASA’s trained and supervised volunteers advocate through the family court system to ensure all victims of child abuse and neglect are safe and thrive in a permanent home. While a child in those situations may face a great deal of uncertainty, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) aims to provide continual monitoring and advocacy, being a stable and constant person in that child’s life. The 60+ page hardcover book is available for purchase at several local shops.
City passes 100-mile mark on paved bikeways Mayor Linda Gorton and members of the Urban County Council celebrated the completion of the city’s 100th mile of paved bikeway in November with a news conference along West Hickman Trail in Veterans Park. Gorton said, “There are many things I’m thankful for in Lexington, including the people who had the foresight to start investing in bike trails and bike lanes many years ago. As a result, citizens today have opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy some exercise, or to bike to work or school.” The 100 miles includes paved surfaces designated for bike use, such as bike lanes, lanes shared with vehicles, and shared use trails. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but 100 miles is a significant achievement,” Gorton said. “This puts us over one-third of the way to the full buildout of a bicycle network.” The City reached mile 100 along the West Hickman Trail in Veterans Park. The trail is a shared-use, greenway trail that connects Veterans Park and Veterans Park Elementary School to an existing on-street bikeway system. The project consists of a 12-foot wide asphalt trail, which includes a 100foot steel bridge that crosses West Hickman Creek.

Triangle Park turned into a winter wonderland with the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival presented by Immanuel Baptist Church. Downtown Lexington is buzzing with holiday spirit, and this is the perfect place for you to take it all in. What are you waiting for? The ice rink is open every day of the week. There are plenty of parking spots within walking distance of the park. Skates are provided and vendors sell hot chocolate to keep you warm! TIPS:
The city’s first bike lane was installed on Waller Avenue in 1995. In 2000, there were only 6.1 miles of paved bikeways in Fayette County. Today, bike lanes can be found on many roads, including Main Street.
1 - Bundle up and wear gloves 2 - Make dinner reservations nearby
One of the most exciting trails under construction is Town Branch Commons, which will run through downtown and link the City’s two major trails, Town Branch Trail and the Legacy Trail. When Town Branch Commons is complete, Lexington will have 22 miles of uninterrupted bike and pedestrian paths that connect downtown to the rural landscape. story courtesy of Angela Poe, LFUCG

Outfit of the Month LIFESTYLE
1 Blame it on the winter season or perhaps the recent release of Disney’s “Frozen 2”, but this month we are feeling a little chilling glamour. That’s why our newest featured look is all about channeling our inner ice princess. At the center of our ensemble is a dazzling Aliétte pairing that is sure to cast a frosty spell. The shimmering top is made of silk organza featuring a slim silhouette, off the shoulder neckline, corset waist and peplum structure. The matching skirt offers a high waistline and midi length hem, decorated with a hardy helping of sparkly embellishments.
2
For accessories, we gravitated towards metallic finishes that add to our outfit without overpowering it. The ‘Tequila’ 105 sandals from Aquazzura and Jimmy Choo’s ‘Emmie’ glitter clutch serve up a delightful holographic touch. We polished things off in style with a couple of local gems. Shelia Bayes’ shiny White Freshwater Pearl Convertible Earrings and a swipe of Chantecaille’s luminescent highlighter deliver that final splash of ‘frosting’ that we needed. Whether you wear this charming look to a festive Christmas party or reserve it for a New Year’s Eve bash, you are sure to be the iciest belle of any ball.

HOLIDAY HAIR story by Jayme Jackson
ave you noticed the 80’s are back? I don’t know about y’all but, I am finally at the age where my old stuff is new again: leather jackets, pointy toe heels, stirrup pants and oversized earrings. I like my earrings so big, I accidentally bought shoes clips one time. And is it just me or were stirrup pants always down at my knees? While all these things make me want to break into a chorus of “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things”, I have left out the most important trend that is back: big hair! Let’s be honest, for me it never left. I am constantly asked how I get such volume in my hair and what products and techniques I use. So here are some commandments for big hair.
1
You must have layers! The layers can be added into the longer lengths of your crown creating texture. Long strands can’t stand up and add volume so without some hidden layers, it will never stay up all day.
2
Don’t be afraid of products! Use a heat protecting spray that also helps with frizz, static and shine while your hair is still damp. Allow your hair to air dry as much as possible before you blow dry it with a large barrel brush. This reduces the amount of heat damage. Once your hair is dry and blown out, I add BB Thickening spray to my crown. It helps add texture.
3
Tease! Use a teasing comb, brush or pick on your crown and work your way around your face fluffing your layers with the pick, ensuring that your hair is teased all around your crown. Without this fluffing process, it will look like you have been smacked up side the head with a cast iron skillet - this still happens to me somedays!
4
Spray some more! Now, save all your hard work by locking in your style with Big Sexy Hair Spray. It’s glue girls - the holy grail of hairspray. Don’t be shy.
5
Find the style, shape and color that suits you the best and never stray far from it. One sure fire way to look like you have aged it to drastically change your hair throughout the decades. So, set aside some “me” time this weekend and play with your hair. You will be amazed how good it will make you feel and remember; if anyone tells you your hair is too big, get rid of them. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

WOW Wedding LIFESTYLE story by lauren rogers The Christmas season is undoubtedly magical. Whether it’s the whisper of snow in the air or the faint twinkling of silver bells in the background, falling in love is exceptional this time of year, but it’s an even more magical time for a wedding. No one can attest to this better than Ashley and Michael Hettinger who are celebrating their oneyear anniversary of marriage on December 8. “Since the wedding was in December, I wanted it to feel romantic with some winter and Christmas touches,” says Ashley. To accomplish this, Michael painted gold numbers on large burgundy colored ornaments and had them hanging from ornament stands on each table at their reception site. The same rich burgundy color popped up in their floral arrangements and their venue had two beautiful Christmas trees decorated in the lobby. Lanterns and floating candles completed the warm, romantic feeling of the room further enhancing the nod to Christmas on their special day. Ashley and Michael, who have known each other since high school, have always shared a love of the Bluegrass State, particularly Louisville where they have spent a great deal of time. “Even though we’re from Indiana, Michael has worked at the Ford Truck Plant for four years now and I worked at Norton Hospital downtown in the ICU after graduating nursing school. We love exploring the city and checking out all the new restaurants.” The Gillespie in Louisville was selected for both their ceremony and reception venue not only for its inherent aesthetic featuring columns, marble floors and chandeliers, but because it was lofty enough to accommodate their extensive guestlist. Ashley explains, “The Gillespie used to be a bank built in 1929 and we loved the architecture The guests went to the mezzanine level after the ceremony to enjoy cocktails and appetizers while the ceremony space was transformed into the reception.” Ashely looked like a Christmas angel walking down the aisle to meet her waiting groom who had calmed her nerves during their special first look, one of the couple’s favorite moments of the day. “I had so many butterflies and I felt like I couldn’t take a deep breath,” Ashley remembers. “After seeing my soon to be husband I felt so relaxed and our day was incredible.” Special sentimental features included a memorial table with pictures of their loved ones who have passed on paired with a single rose and an heirloom pearl necklace from Michael’s family that Ashley had wrapped in her bouquet. Additionally, to mark her father’s presence at their wedding, Ashley left the first chair open for him with a boutonniere laying on the seat complete with a ribbon and flower arrangement hanging on the side saying “father.” When the happy couple reflects on their stunning day, they agree they wouldn’t have changed a thing. Ashley shares, “We stuck together and stayed true to what was best for us and enjoyed every second of the day.”

Don’t skimp on your décor in the foyer! Your front entrance is your guests’ first impression and it is the last room they will see at the end of the night.
small BITES If you are not having a sit-down dinner, stick to foods that can easily be served on small plates so guests can carry it around and mingle though out the party. Set out your dishes in multiple areas, so you don’t interrupt traffic flow. A filling charcuterie board, hearty bruschetta and a sliced steak hors d’oeuvre are easy to eat and won’t leave your guests hungry.

THE PERFECT
charcuterie board There’s nothing I enjoy more than everyone gathered around a big cheese board enjoying the variety of flavors and textures. It’s the absolute best way to start a party and totally removes the stress of hosting so that you can get to what entertaining is truly about slowing down and savoring the moment with family, friends and a good glass of wine!
Select three to four different cheeses. The key is picking out a range of cheeses so that you have something that suits everyone’s palate.
Add in a jam chutney, spread or local honey for sweetness and a moist texture.
Top off your board with olives and nuts. Marcona almonds, pecans or walnuts are my favorites.
4
Add dried fruits (such as apricots, figs or dates), fresh fruit (like grapes) or seasonal fruit (like berries and apples). This adds a pop of color and a sweet flavor to the board.
6
Finally, add a variety of crackers. Offering a baguette is a good option to fill up your guests. Here the baguette is topped with brie and cranberry.

Every design detail of this Patchen Wilkes townhome is deliberate and dazzling. story by donna ison photos by shaun ring
There are two types of people: those who favor a finished masterpiece and those who prefer a blank canvas so they can create the masterpiece themselves. j. stuart hurt, interior designer and owner of house, which along with its popular retail store, offers floral, event and design services, is the latter. He states, “As the designer, the homeowner and I selected this home because it was not finished. It allowed us, along with the great team at Andover Construction, to customize this home as we saw fit. The homeowner and I completely redesigned the floor plan, even reversing the steps to allow for a better flow on the main level, and to add special touches in the second level bedroom area.” Of course, location also played a major role in their choosing this particular “shell” of a three-level townhome. It is located in the exclusive, waterfront community of Patchen Wilkes, which, according to The House Store Realty Group website, “offers a serene, maintenance-free lifestyle with gorgeous landscaping and a walking path along the Patchen Wilkes Lake.” Joey Svec, the principle broker at The House Store Realty Group explains, “The homes here can be bought ‘as studs’, which allows the homeowner to fully customize their floorplan.”

Upon stepping into this particular property, stuart knew exactly what he needed to do. “Because of the predetermined exterior, the overall feel of the neighborhood is an updated traditional style living. However, we chose to break all the barriers while designing the interior of this home, making modifications and floor plan changes to suit the owner’s needs and living style,” says stuart, “This is the third home I’ve done for this homeowner, so knowing how they liked to live, my first question, when I walked in, was, ‘Can I move the fireplace?’” December 2019 | TOPSinLex.com

To establish three distinctive areas that offered separate conversation spots, but were still connected, they floated the fireplace in center and made it double-sided so it could be enjoyed equally from the living, dining and kitchen areas. “Positioning it as the only ‘wall’ to divide the space, made the perfect transition point for the entire main floor living,” states stuart. To ensure it was a true focal point, they employed District Faux Artistry to faux finish the piece using a black slate technique. Each area also provides a view of the lake out the back windows. Once the floorplan was finished, stuart set about making the homeowner’s vision a reality. He says, “In each home I do, the homeowner always drives my aesthetic. It could be one piece or one photo they saw, and I jump from there, building layer after layer, until the process results in their home.”

The longtime client brought him a photo of a room that had the overall desired look and feel. “The inspiration for the house was black, gold and bleached wood,” stuart states, “The palette is a neutral washed white-gray walls, with a bleached floor, combining black and gold accents throughout. Pops of color come with art, fabrics and personal belongings that we incorporated into the home.” Specifically, the flooring throughout is a blonde-stained oak from Flooring Gallery. The walls are painted Repose Gray, the doors are done in Tricorn Black, and the trim is Alabaster, all by Sherwin Williams. To further unify the home, an assortment of organic materials such as stone, petrified wood and driftwood, and both shiny and matte metals are accompanied by nods to nature, including live plants and deer wall décor in both silver and gold.

Aside from select pieces from Burke AT HOME Tour of Homes Furniture and a few favorite finds from the owner, nearly all of the furnishings, art and accessories were purchased specifically for the space from house by JSD Designs. Stepping into the foyer, you find yourself standing on a stunning tailor-made floor in a honeycomb pattern with a charming powder room to your right. Just down a hall, which houses a laundry and spacious pantry, is the airy kitchen which opens into the rest of the first floor living. The kitchen, built by Kitchen Concepts, offers ample room for convenient cooking and elegant entertaining, and boasts several extraordinary features. A large island with Mont Blanc quartzite countertops from Su Casa Tile & Granite and a wrap around, dining-height table in a sueded, Absolute Black granite finish provides a place for prep and comfortable seating for six. Open shelving throughout is both stylish and utilitarian. A bar along one wall contains a split fridge and shelving to display a collection of gorgeous glassware. Even the GE Café appliances were customized to match the rose gold hardware that graces the cabinetry. However, the most extraordinary element is the cluster of handblown globes that hang above the island. According to stuart, “The lighting fixtures above the island are pivotal to the kitchen. The owner stumbled across Epiphany Studios, a glass blowing studio, on a business trip, and knew we had to incorporate it. They set the tone and mood and are the talk of any cocktail conversation.” Each globe differs in size, shape and texture, and was meticulously crafted by world-renowned master glass blower, April Wagner.

In the master bedroom, Stuart once again manipulates the space by using the tall upholstered headboard of the bed, also from Burke Furniture, to constitute a wall in the center of the room, thereby dividing it. One half is a sleeping quarters with a seating area. The other is a dressing room with an oversized dresser; a live edge bench that the owner found while traveling; and private laundry. With its cream and gray, heated Carrera marble tile floor, from Carpet One, and large walk-in shower with nude, high-polish porcelain tile contrasted by a black accent wall, the master bath is sophisticated and serene. To compliment the shower, the designer chose a Brunella quartzite countertop in black and added a splash of color with a blue vanity. A well-appointed walk-in closet from Closet Concepts completes the owner’s suite. The second floor also contains a second full bath and spacious guest room.

Tour of Homes A walkout basement gives the owner additional capacity for guests and entertaining. Though not yet finished, the goal is to invent a family-friendly environment with a home cinema that equally accommodates children and adults for games and get togethers. It also houses a third full bath, additional guest room and large exercise room. One of the most special aspects of the townhouse is its options for outdoor living. A large private courtyard in the front of the property offers another opportunity for personalization. Of the courtyard, stuart says, “We knew we wanted impact, but we were just not sure how to flow. After getting in, we ‘used’ the space, did a quick sketch of what we wanted, and Landscape Workshop made our vision come to life.” In addition, there is a waterfront patio off the basement and a first floor veranda with spectacular views of the water and Patchen Wilkes horse farm beyond. For others who long for lakeside living, Patchen Wilkes is perfect, which is why only 5 of the original 54 units, are left for purchase. According to Joey, “There’s only a few waterfront properties in Lexington, and this is one of them. And, it’s very eclectic. We have a really nice mix of folks that have created a great community.”

Interior designer and owner of House, which along with its popular retail store, offers floral, event and design services. Where do you find your inspiration as a designer? My inspiration comes from each space and the client themselves. When I walk into a space, I automatically see a color or a texture. Generally, I keep that to myself until it’s time to unveil the overall design concept.
How would you describe your decorating style/philosophy? Again, my style for clients relies on them. Personally, my style is clean, but has traditional or retro elements combined in. I like my personal home to be a bit unexpected, but very livable.
Who is your style icon? I love Dorothy Draper. She was bold and has great use of pattern and color. And, honestly she did what she wanted...and made the client happy at the same time.
Name three things every room should have. 1. Attitude 2. Art 3. Comfort
Why is color so important and how can a client find their perfect palette? Color sets the tone and plays a key role in how you feel in the space. Whether it be a neutral grey to let other pieces pop off it, or a bold statement with patterned wallpaper, or an accent color, it sets the tone for how you feel during the rest of your journey in the space. Sometimes color stops you in your tracks, other times it’s not noticed until combined with other elements.
What is a common misconception about working with a designer? Expense—yes, designers don’t work for free, but trained and seasoned designers bring a lot to the table. You’re creating your environment...and you’re allowing the designer’s knowledge of space, color, scale and pattern to help pull that together. Designers do as little as choose a great color or simply just tweak that one favorite space in your home…or as much as help you from a new build or remodel.
Why should one opt to use an interior designer? And, when they do, how should they go about choosing the right one for their project? Choose a designer that feels right when talking to him or her. The client and designer have to be able to talk openly, agree and disagree. It’s a relationship that could last for only one paint can, or throughout every room.

Color WEDDING BAND g Magnolia Home’s “Wedding Band” is a soothing gray. Joanna Gaines was inspired by her husband’s wedding ring, creating a shade that represents promise and timelessness. She describes Wedding Band as a silver-gray tinted with sky blue.
In classic Fixer Upper style, Joanna used this color to bring a farmhouse feel to this holiday dining room. By using the color only on the paneled wainscoting and trim, the room gains depth and dimension. Simultaneously, it brings the attention down to where the conversation is happening around the dinner table. Wedding Band pairs beautifully with other muted hues. Rainy Days picks up on the blue while Cupola provides a warm contrast. Natural pine boughs will pop against this understated gray, so Regal Leaf is an interesting color for other accessories. The weathered white of Shiplap “marries” the whole look together.

Haley Andes story by lauren rogers photos by keni parks
H
aley Andes has a heart for serving others above all else. As the Associate Director of Build Inclusion, a local non-profit serving high school students and young adults in their preparations for “competitive, integrated employment”, she has made a difference in the lives of many. Annette Jett, colleague, friend and Executive Director of Build Inclusion denotes, “At Build Inclusion, Haley teaches teens and young adults with disabilities Workplace Readiness and Advocacy Skills and works with them to discover their strengths, skills and interests. She then helps them explore jobs in those areas and gain meaningful employment in the community. Haley, a Certified therapeutic recreation specialist, is always willing to go above and beyond and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Business Administration. She also recently became ordained so she can preside over her dear friend’s wedding!” Annette continues, “Although she is young, she is extremely successful and dedicated to serving others. She has a bright future with Build Inclusion and beyond.” Haley accomplishes all of this while being a super single mom to 3-year old Bryan, which is to no one’s surprise, her favorite role of all.

Haley shares, “Bryan inspires me to be the best mom that I can be. We love to play outside in the dirt with trucks, water guns, take walks and play with Legos. We like to go to church, play on playgrounds and participate in both community and Build Inclusion events.” She pauses for a moment and continues with a smile, “We also love to have movie nights, which wouldn’t be complete without popcorn, of course!” Though she admits that balancing everything can be challenging, her planner has been key to ensuring all of her responsibilities on a daily basis are accomplished. She reflects, “Not only am I a mom and an employee, but I am also in school for my MBA so it can be very hard to balance everything!” For Haley, a day in the life of a super mom includes getting up before Bryan and getting herself ready before helping him get ready for school at Grace Early Learning Center in Georgetown and fixing breakfast. After work and school, Haley cherishes their time before bedtime by enjoying dinner with him, playing, bath time and stories. “Once he is down for the night, I do cleanup around the house, work on homework, and try to relax with some popcorn or ice cream (or both) and watch something on TV,” she says. “I think it is important as moms that we give ourselves some grace,” she reflects. “I know it’s easier said than done, but it is super important to take time for self-care in addition to not being so hard on yourself.” Haley also advises other moms to find a mommy tribe that you can do life with and to not fall into the trap of comparison. “We have enough to juggle as it is and at the end of the day, doing the best we can for our children is what matters most.”

Pets
story by jean gibowski, cvpm, brighton animal clinic
Dear Santa letters are being written by children every where, and one of the most asked for gifts is a puppy or kitten. But is a puppy or kitten right for you, especially at this busy time of year? Although there may be nothing cuter then a ball of fluff in a wrapped box under the tree, a new pet is a big commitment. Before adding a pet to your family this Christmas, make sure everyone in the house is on board. Do not give a pet to someone outside your home. Just because someone may be missing a pet doesn’t mean they are ready for a new pet or ready for the pet you picked out. Instead, give a gift certificate for adoption or to their vet clinic so they can pick out the new addition. Do a lot of research about where you are getting your new pet from. Many online breeders are really puppy mills. They will post cute puppy photos making it look like they are in a loving home when in reality the dogs are kept in small, dirty cages and bred continually. A good breeder will want to meet you and will welcome you to their home or facility to meet all their dogs. Rescues and shelters are great places to get purebred and mix breed dogs and puppies. There are breed specific rescues if you want a certain breed and all breed rescues if you are looking for that All American Mutt. They will require some background information so don’t wait until the last minute to apply for one of their dogs or puppies!

Before getting a puppy, really think about your lifestyle. Are you active or couch potatoes? Do you work full time and then attend children’s activities? If so, an adult dog or cat may be a better fit for you. Interview trainers now and do your breed research before falling in love with a cute face. Planning now ensures many great years with the right new furry family member later.

THE KENTUCKY CASTLE AND CASTLE FARMS
Upscale amenities paired with a farm-to-table restaurant gives both locals and out-of-town guests an experience fit for royalty.
T
he Kentucky Castle is one of those places we’ve all driven by. Most of us have yet to set foot inside the massive walls of one of central Kentucky’s most impressive landmarks. What began as a love story back in 1969 is now a farm-to-table restaurant, boutique hotel and event space located on 55 acres of stunning Kentucky farmland. With just 14 guest rooms in the 17,000 sq. ft. castle, there’s no lack of Southern hospitality to go around. Service is at the very top of the list when it comes to giving guests the experience of a lifetime when they visit. “The castle sat empty for so long that I think it almost became an element of mystery. When our new owners purchased the property in 2017 and opened it to the public shortly after, people began visiting from all over the world, as well as locals just coming to see what it’s all about,” shares Christie Eckerline, the castle’s COO. “We strive to be elegant but not ostentatious and I think we’re doing a great job of that.” Walking through the massive entrance to the Kentucky Castle, you’re promptly greeted by a warm and smiling staff. From the foyer, you can head to the bourbon bar for a cocktail before dinner or roam the grounds where you’ll find a greenhouse, an organic garden, a swimming pool, spa, truffle orchard, apiary, gourmet mushroom garden and more. “In the summer we actually grow 90-100% of our produce on the grounds that we use for our restaurant, so when we say farm-to-table, we really mean it,” says Jason Walls, Executive Chef at Castle Farms Restaurant. “In the winter we use about 20 local farms in central Kentucky–no more than an hour away–to keep things hyperlocal and then we produce over one thousand pounds of sweet potatoes from our garden along with mushrooms.” Walls says his motto is that if he didn’t raise it, he’s shaking the hand of the farmer who did. Chef Jason, who was born and raised in Kentucky and attended culinary school at Sullivan, sharpened his impressive skills by studying under some of the best chefs in Lexington. “I have always been passionate about farm-to-table cuisine. I’ve raised sheep, chicken and vegetables myself for the past two decades so it’s always sort of been my niche,” says Walls. He has been at the Kentucky Castle since they originally opened in 2017. While the restaurant is considered fine dining, he has strived to keep things relaxed and casual. That way, every visitor– whether staying in the guest rooms or just coming by for dinner–can feel entirely at home while having an unbelievable dining experience.
The menu varies with what’s available seasonally. As the holidays approach, you’ll want to get to Castle Farms to take full advantage of all of the cozy dishes and cocktails you’ll find on the carefully curated winter menu. “I highly recommend our Hot Bourbon Ball Cocktail,” suggests Eckerline. “It’s a combination of Boone County Bourbon Cream mixed into hot cocoa and served with a flaming marshmallow on top. It’s decadent and delicious.” When it comes to the dinner menu during the cooler months, Chef Jason focuses a lot on stews and braised meats as well as roasted root veggies. “The Braised Oxtail Medallion is one of our guest favorites, served with foie grois and a truffle demi-glace, garnished with local microgreens from Black Hawk Farms. The Black Hawk Farms filet is the best steak you’ll find in Kentucky. They’re 100% American Waygu beef raised in Paducah. We even get their birth certificates and we can track the lineage. It’s pretty cool,” shares Walls. If you’re in more of a fish mood, you’ll find the seafood dishes always changing due to Walls flying in what’s fresh daily. “All of our seafood comes from a fisherman who sends me a picture of what they’ve caught that day. I’ll say yes and have it here the next day,” says Walls. One of his favorite dishes is their Verlasso Salmon which is from Patagonia. “All of the fish we use are on the list of sustainable options from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I’ll take the whole salmon and break it down and then we make stock from the bones,” comments Walls. “What we serve with the salmon changes seasonally, of course”. To wrap up your meal, you’ll want to take a good look at the dessert menu which also changes daily as everything–even the ice cream–is made in-house. “The pot de crème that we do with bourbon and local sorghum is one that people come in asking for,” says Walls. So whether you want to plan a visit to the Kentucky Castle to take a peek at their immaculate holiday décor, book a little pampering at the spa, plan your next staycation or visit for a cocktail and dinner, you’ll find a staff that’s thrilled to have you and ready to make sure your experience is one fit for royalty.

What made you fall in love with food? I started to love food from growing up on a small farm in Jessamine County. I was always growing veggies, so it led into cooking veggies. Now, my whole life revolves around food. How do you stay inspired? Different farms, different seasons, different vegetables. I’m never doing the same thing. We do prolong the seasons by freezing or making jams but once tomatoes are done, I’m done. It makes it pretty hard to get bored.
Q+A with
Chef Jason Walls
Favorite veggie? The tomato! I love to grow them because they’re very versatile. Kentucky is wonderful for tomatoes. Do you have a morning ritual? If so, what does it look like? Drink a quart of water. No caffeine for me haha! Favorite dish from your childhood? Green beans. We used to grow and can our beans eating them right out of the jar. They were so good. My mom would can 250 jars of green beans in the summer. What do you love most about Lexington? Lexington actually has a really great art scene and it also has a great music scene. I collect vinyls, so I really enjoy that. When you're not working, are you cooking or grabbing carryout? Cooking. I go to my greenhouse and start clipping vegetables. My freezer is full of meat that I raise or buy locally. My two kids love to see what I am cooking. And of course, we all eat the same things. Share a tidbit of advice for someone who dreams of pursuing a career in food. Stay in school. Don’t get discouraged and get plenty of rest. It’s an exhausting business, but so rewarding.

CUPCAKE STATION Celebrate the holidays with a fun new tradition and a twist on cupcakes that makes everyone holly jolly! Local baker and owner of PattyCakes by Vicki shows us how.
Many of our holiday traditions come straight from the kitchen and this year I’m bringing the family to the table for a very merry Christmas Cupcake Station! With cupcakes, icing and some simple toppings, everyone gets to make it their way! I start with Christmas confetti cupcakes by adding sprinkles to vanilla cake batter—my kids love this festive cake! (If you don’t enjoy baking or need to focus on other dishes, just get some fresh “naked” (unfrosted) cupcakes from the bakery at your favorite grocer.) While the cupcakes are baking then cooling, I load an icing bag with simple vanilla buttercream and get the toppings ready! We like marshmallows, caramel drizzle, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermint, paper toppers and more sprinkles of course! We also love to make chocolate bark and use it as a topping; this is a wonderfully easy food art activity to do with kids! Just spread candy melts and sprinkles onto wax paper and you’ll have beautiful hand crafted candy. Once the cupcakes are cooled and the topping station is set up I invite everyone to the table and they’re off! Little or big, every kid will love this decorate-yourown-dessert! Here’s to making sweet memories and hoping you have a very happy holiday!

Max Duffy
story by Larry Vaught / Photo courtesy of uk athletics or Australian Max Duffy, life could not be much better in Lexington than what it has been since he arrived to become the punter for the University of Kentucky football team in 2018.
F
He learned so well that he got an offer from Kentucky and through his agreement with Prokick that mandated he take his first “suitable” offer, he became a Wildcat knowing very little about the program or city.
“It has been an awesome experience,” Duffy said. “It has given me a second chance in life. The experience has already been something I will cherish for a long time. It’s been different and taken me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to live and study in a different country.”
“I had never even seen snow before but Lexington is an awesome city,” Duffy said. “It kind of feels like a small country town back home without a lot of the traffic. There is a lot to do and the city really gets behind the team. I have loved every minute of it.”
His recruiting story is not one that will ever be easy to top. He grew up playing basketball and soccer before switching to Australian Rules Football at age 15. However, he was working as a tree lopper — “I cut down trees with a bunch of friends I played football with” — while playing in the West Australian Football League before being picked in the 2012 Australian Football League draft. However, shoulder and hamstring injuries limited his play in 2013 and 2014 and when he was finally cut from the league, he signed with Prokick Australia, moved across the country from Perth to Melbourne to train, and eventually came to the United States after four months of training as a punter to try out for college teams.
He became somewhat of a fan favorite because of his ability to flip field position and his unusual punting style. Duffy isn’t sure, though, why he’s been noticed so much by fans. “I am just a punter. I don’t really do much,” Duffy said. “I guess maybe I just bring a different element from a different country. People laugh at what I say and the way I talk. But the support of the fans has been great. To acknowledge punting is important and to get a clap walking off the field was pretty cool.” Unlike a lot of college players, Duffy does not fantasize about playing in the NFL. He would be happy for the opportunity to do that, but getting his Master’s degree is his main priority.
He punted at Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee for coaches and scouts. He sat in Alabama coach Nick Saban’s office and said it was “really cool” even though he didn’t get a scholarship offer. “Now I have an even greater appreciation of how neat that was. At the time, I did not really know that much about Alabama football. I was still just getting the hang of punting,” Duffy, 26, said. “It ended up being nine months until I actually got my first offer after I started punting. It felt pretty natural but it took a bit of time to get used to the spiral (of the football) and wearing pads and a helmet that is really heavy. I also had to learn about the rush (from the defense) and what the rules were.”
134
“Playing in the NFL would be a dream but whether that is realistic or not I don’t know,” Duffy said. “Academics is why I am here. If I just got to work out for a team or punt in a preseason game, then my life dream would be completed. It would be awesome if I just could get a tryout. “I am here to finish my Master’s and I know I am probably not good enough to even make the NFL. I want to coach back home or be a sports psychologist working with elite athletes back home. Either one would be ideal and I am just thankful I got to come to Kentucky so I can hopefully make that happen. That's why my education is my first priority.”

Terrence Clarke
story by Larry Vaught / Photo courtesy of Larry Vauight
I
f you like Tyrese Maxey’s infectious smile, then chances are you will certainly like recent Kentucky basketball signee Terrence Clarke.
“Terrence is a very charismatic young man. He has a million dollar smile that just lights up a room,” said Jason Smith, Clarke’s coach at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. “We have had a lot of talented kids here over the years but not any have had the reputation he has while here in high school.”
still remembers the first day coaches could contact players his freshman year and Calipari was the first coach to contact him. That made a lasting impression on Clarke, who also reclassified from the 2021 to the 2020 recruiting class when he picked UK. Smith says only a true “hoops junkie” understands the level of basketball talent at New England prep schools. Current NBA standout Donovan Mitchell, who played at Louisville, didn’t average over 12 points per game in his two years at Brewster.
Smith is also the associate director of admission at the school and noted how families got a questionnaire before visiting the school that asks if there is anyone in particular they would like to meet on the visit.
“We have a talented team and he knows if you are not playing and going hard somebody is waiting behind you to take your spot,” Smith said. “Terrence does possess a tremendous desire to be in the gym, which is different from a lot of his peers the last few years. He is consumed with getting better and has a great work ethic that coach Cal really likes. He’s a typical teenager playing video games and hanging out with friends but he’s mainly consumed with basketball.”
“Usually it would be like an art or history teacher or maybe a soccer coach,” Smith said. “In the last month we’ve had 10 or 15 asking to meet Terrence Clarke. That’s never happened.” If Rivals.com recruiting writer David Sisk is right, that attention will only increase when Clarke gets to Kentucky next year.
Smith wants to see Clarke become a better rebounder and defender — perhaps even a “lockdown” defender — this season. However, like Sisk, he knows Clarke’s offensive skills are extraordinary.
“If a football team has a great receiver, you just throw it up to him and he comes down with it,” Sisk said. “Put Clarke in a one-on-one situation and give him the ball and he is going to score. John Calipari has not had a guard like him since he has been at Kentucky. “John Wall would be the closest thing, but Terrence Clarke is a better shooter. He has all of the tools and God-given ability any player could ever want.” Wall was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2010 NBA draft after one year at UK and is a five-time NBA All-Star. “John Wall was dynamic and a playmaker but with Clarke you can just say go get a basket and he will do it. There’s not many players who can do that,” Sisk said. Give Calipari credit for sensing that early. When Clarke was a freshman, Calipari started recruiting him. The Boston native
“His ability to create separation from a defender is as good as anyone I have ever coached here. It is off the chart,” Smith said. “He needs to be a more consistent 3-point shooter and is putting in the time to do that. But his ability to create space is at the elite level. “He’s going to Kentucky because of coach Cal’s reputation, the school’s tradition, the proven history of putting guys in to the NBA that are successful, and to be around other high level players. If he had not wanted to play with or be around other high level players, he would not have come to Brewster. He’s not afraid to share the spotlight the way Cal likes his guys to do and he’ll listen and do what Cal tells him to do for the team and to get better.”
